Don't worry about what's going on in my background, in my ambiance.
Starting point is 00:01:24 I'm at the Colts facility right now. There's really nowhere for me to shoot this. I'm in my car. It's raining, as you can see. So we're rolling with it. We're rolling with it. You sound good, Jake. Like, I honestly, you might have to do this every time.
Starting point is 00:01:37 Like, it sounds your best right now. It's probably the best acoustics I've ever had. I'm usually in some sort of weird room at the press box at the stadium or in my office at home. I don't had. I'm usually in some sort of weird room at the press box at the stadium or in my office at home. I don't know. Anyways, I think you guys know what we're going to talk about. Today is day one of the 2023 NFL draft and the Colts have selected quarterback Anthony Richardson out of Florida. We're going to discuss how things unfolded in front of the Colts in those first few picks to get them where they were, how Richardson fits in Indy, which is perfect because Zach just
Starting point is 00:02:12 released something right after the selection was made, and then what the Colts could still do with the rest of the draft now that the big checkmark of quarterback has been crossed off the list. So first up, Zach, I don't know about you, but I was getting a little nervous in these first few picks because CJ Stroud going to Houston is something we didn't see because we'd heard these last few months that it wasn't going to happen. And lo and behold, they'd turn their card in early and he was the pick. And then you immediately start hearing chatter that three is being traded, and you're like, oh, my God, the nightmare scenarios.
Starting point is 00:02:48 Three quarterbacks are about to go in front of the Colts, and they're going to have to settle for whoever else. And it was the Texans. They came back to save the day. They go back to back. First pick was Bryce Young, obviously, the Texans, and C.J. Stroud traded back up from 12 to get Will Anderson. Colts are on the clock at four to pick between Anthony Richardson
Starting point is 00:03:10 and Will Levis. Richardson, as we've been saying for a long time now, was the pick. Zach, you're over the moon. I know it. I am over the moon, man. This is the guy from day one of the draft process i've had as my qb1 like i again i i don't care if you have somebody else at qb1 i see the case for all four of these guys being your top quarterback in this class but if you're looking to quote chris ballard if you're looking
Starting point is 00:03:39 for what these guys can do what they can do physically that nobody else can do it's anthony richardson anthony richardson's the top end guy when it comes to traits and what they can do you know yes he has a long way to go to become that franchise quarterback but there are just things that this guy can do that nobody else can do whatsoever like he is one of one like he said in one of those interview processes so like I am over the moon about this pick I was sweating it out for sure uh luckily our colleague Destin Adams was telling me that Houston was really trying to come up so I was a little bit prepared for Houston to come up to number three uh but I was sweating it man I I knew I knew throughout these last like
Starting point is 00:04:22 month or two I was going with my gut saying, I know from what I've heard this whole process, Richardson is the Colts guy and Levis is not a top 10 pick. That is what I was hearing. And then all of a sudden April comes along and Levis is getting the steam up to number four, getting the steam up to number two, getting the steam up to number one. And the waters got a little muddied for me there. And I got a little nervous here coming up to the clock. And I was, I was definitely terrified the Colts were going to take Will Levis, but I
Starting point is 00:04:51 just think this is the best fit for not only the Colts, for Anthony Richardson, like Anthony Richardson needed this. He needed Shane Steichen to have his best chance at success. Sorry, guys, I'm a little amped up right now. I can't even talk. He needed Shane Steichen to have his best chance at success. Sorry, guys, I'm a little amped up right now. I can't even talk. But yeah, I think this is just the perfect fit for both player and team. And I firmly believe Anthony Richardson is going to be a superstar in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:05:23 Like, I don't puff smoke up your guys' butts too much, and I try to be really nuanced and balanced with stuff. But I firmly believe he's going to be really nuanced and balanced with stuff but I I firmly believe he's going to be a superstar in Indy I think this is the franchise quarterback that the Colts need and this is the big shot that Chris Ballard needed to take a quarterback I am 100% behind this pick I think it's a phenomenal pick and again my QB won in this class I I really really think this guy has superstar potential and the Colts have the coaching staff to really bring it out of him. Yeah, because he wasn't just going to be successful in just any situation. Really needed to go somewhere stable with a good support staff, somewhere like Carolina or what we expect Indy to be with Shane Steichen and some of the guys that he's put around him. But, you know, we heard from Shane Steichen and Chris Ballard
Starting point is 00:06:07 right after the pick. They came in and spoke with us. And Ballard kind of confirmed a lot of things that we had suspected or heard all along. Now, he was kind of blowing some smoke the other day, like he said he was. He was dancing. You know, he intimated that they weren't necessarily targeting anyone that they were open to whoever but he essentially said that they'd they were getting
Starting point is 00:06:31 a little nervous there in the top three they'd been targeting richardson and especially at three when it looked like that that pick was going to get moved they were getting kind of antsy um so they're really excited to get him uh steichen you know he he's a little more stoic than chris is um but no they're they're really excited that they could he's got to earn it uh obviously and they're they're not going to rush his timetable at all but now they can also take the next step in installing this offense now that they know the kind of quarterback that they're going to be building it for long term uh so that is really good but yeah this all all around you know it's it's a good day for Colts fans good day for locked on Colts um great day for us man we were we I mean look you guys can go back on a lot of our old videos I mean I did a couple solo
Starting point is 00:07:23 ones where it was just me talking Anthony Richardson, like just talking Anthony Richardson on here. We tried to be balanced. We tried to have really candid conversations about each of these top four guys. But you guys could tell from our channel here, we were all in on Anthony Richardson. We were pretty all in. I was definitely leading the charge on that, but here at Locked on Colts, here at HorseshoeHuddle.com, we were very, very much in on Anthony Richardson. And this isn't us just being excited because the Colts took him, and we're going to be excited about whoever the Colts took.
Starting point is 00:07:57 This is who at least I really, really wanted from day one this is who I wanted and I am 100% ready to get behind Anthony Richardson and everything that's gonna come forward here with him as the Colts uh franchise quarterback yeah I admittedly you know CJ Stroud was gonna be my choice if if all choices were on the board uh he went number two I started to sweat a little bit then because yeah again you hear number three might be moving. And you're like, is someone going to come up for Richardson right now? And then the Colts are just stuck with whatever they get. And, of course, you know, they had a target.
Starting point is 00:08:32 And most importantly, they didn't have to move to go get him. So they still have that pick at 35. They still have that third-round pick. They get their guy, and they didn't have to give up anything to do it. So that, to me me is a slam dunk. Next, we're going to look into how Richardson specifically fits with head coach Shane Steichen and the Colts offense. But first, a word from our friends over at Ultimate Football GM. Today's episode is brought to you by Ultimate Football GM.
Starting point is 00:09:05 You've heard us talk about this mobile game for quite a while going back into the season. Ultimate Football GM, start your dynasty today. And every dayers, join Kyle Krabs, Joe Marino, and other Locked On NFL experts on the locked on NFL
Starting point is 00:10:05 scouting YouTube page for live NFL draft coverage presented by ultimate football GM. They're actually live right now. If you guys are checking us out right now, once we get off, go over to that, uh, that that channel right there and definitely check them out. Kyle and Joe will be live during all of the rounds one, two, and three. And then on Saturday, they'll get you caught up after each and every round. All right, Jake. in three and then on Saturday they'll get you caught up after each and every round all right Jake so obviously I talked about a little bit there in that first segment but I I think this is the perfect fit for Shane Steichen you guys can check one of our other videos on here I think I
Starting point is 00:10:36 just I think we post on our channel the the Peter interview audio and YouTube there yeah so you guys can check that on there but I really think this is the perfect fit for shane steichen's offense because when you look at what shane steichen wants to accomplish what his offensive philosophy is it is attack the ball down the field it is to get that ball down the field attack vertically as much as possible and there's two ways that anthony is perfect with this. One, he's a great downfield thrower. He was last year, a phenomenal downfield thrower on passes past 10 yards last year. He had 13 touchdowns, four interceptions, nearly 2,000 yards passing, adjusting a policing percentage around 60%, which if you're counting 20 yard passes down the field,
Starting point is 00:11:20 that's pretty darn good. He was a guy who attacked down the field a lot last year had a lot of success but also when you're looking at a guy with his athleticism he's going to get defenses into single high looks all the time like they're going to be in single high looks all the time because you're going to have to bring that safety down to account for him you're going to have to have some defender in the box accounting for his scramble drill i mean anthony richardson last year i think he had three scrambles over 40 yards two or 40 plus yard touchdown runs one against utah and one against lsu the lsu one was like an 80 yard touchdown run uh he's gonna dictate coverage because of his rushing ability and when you have to dictate coverage because of that
Starting point is 00:12:00 ability you're gonna have more vertical shots down the field we saw with jalen hurts last year in philly we're going to see it with anthony richard here in indy so i really think again shane steichen i bet from day one was saying this is my quarterback because i know how to work with this and one thing i put out there not too long ago and jake i'll let you talk after i say this when shane steichen shane's got a taste of what he wants in the NFL. He wants a guy who can dictate coverage and get those explosive passes and get the ball down the field. He got a taste of his perfect offense with Jalen Hurts last year. There was no way that he was going to go away from that and go to a pocket passer or go to someone who can't run.
Starting point is 00:12:39 So getting Anthony Richardson with him, man, I really think – I mean, Akai said it best on Twitter, like this is the perfect combination in this draft. I could listen to you explain his fit with the Colts all day. You know, I checked out that clip with you and Peter before this. And then again, like I mentioned at the top of the show, guys, Zach put out something right after the selection about, specifically about how
Starting point is 00:13:06 richardson fits in with shane steichen so go over to horse after this finish talking to us first but after this go over to horseshoeauto.com and check that out um no i i think it's awesome i it also makes me think of the current colts personnel not not just the coaches. So I just, I imagine the RPO game with Richardson and Jonathan Taylor just going bonkers. Like, yeah. Yeah. It's not even the RPO game. It's the read option game too. Like, yeah, it's just, oh man.
Starting point is 00:13:40 Just the, the, the multiplicity of things they could do in this run game essentially now, as long as he stays healthy, I see Jonathan Taylor. Just the multiplicity of things they could do in this run game essentially now. As long as he stays healthy, I see Jonathan Taylor. I don't think he's not necessarily going to go 1,800 yards and 20 touchdowns again, but I see him looking dominant again with a quarterback that can threaten like he has now. I mean, we don't know when Richardson is going to be ready to play, but I think that's going to be ready to play, but I think that's going to be great.
Starting point is 00:14:11 You talked about how coverages have to shrivel up to fill up the box. Guess who is an awesome contested catch receiver downfield? Alec Pierce. Guess who else? Jelani Woods. Michael Pittman, even. He's not the burner, but we saw with Carson Wentz how he can win downfield so yeah the Colts still have some things to do in the draft which we'll get to in the next segment but the guys they already have here pumped to see them playing with Richardson oh man yeah it is just a perfect
Starting point is 00:14:37 fit and like you mentioned with Jonathan Taylor there uh Philadelphia running backs uh the last two years with Jalen Hurts and Shane Steichen, I believe they average 0.3 to 0.4 more yards per carry than any other, like than the average in the NFL, basically. So if the average in the NFL was 4.4 yards per carry, they were averaging 4.8, 4.9 yards per carry the last two seasons. Like running backs have so much more space to operate when you have a player like Anthony Richardson, because every handoff doesn't become a handoff. It becomes a read option. Even if it is just a generic handoff, everything is a read option because you always have to account for that quarterback. You'll have linebackers
Starting point is 00:15:16 keeping their eyes on him. You'll have defensive ends keeping their eyes on you. You'll have safeties and their run fills having to fill the backside on every single run attempt. Jonathan Taylor is going to have the most space he's ever had to work with in his entire career, not just his NFL career, in his college career as well. This run game is really going to take off because of the threat of Anthony Richardson. That's honestly, again, so much of this fit is the threat
Starting point is 00:15:39 of Anthony Richardson. It's really not even who he is right now. Because, again, he's an inconsistent passer, needs to work on his mechanics, needs to work on his ability to get through his reads and stuff like that but he's a guy from day one that is such a threat to defenses you are talking about a 244 pound quarterback who runs a 4-4 who can also throw the ball over the top you are terrified of him from one yard past the line of scrimmage to 50 yards past the line of scrimmage. And you have to account,
Starting point is 00:16:08 you have to somehow account for that with 11 guys. So yeah, I, I think that the running game in India is going to go crazy. And I think Anthony Richardson's gonna be a big part of that. I do love that. You mentioned my article though. I did want to put it out there for all of you guys.
Starting point is 00:16:21 I wrote that article at noon today. That's been, that's been sitting in our publisher all day, guys. We knew this was coming. Again, I know you guys were following me on Twitter. I was nervous. I had that lump in my throat. I was terrified that they were going to take Levis or even take Stroud. Again, I like both those guys.
Starting point is 00:16:40 I felt more confident about Anthony Richardson. But yeah, I wrote it up on Richardson I was gonna write one on Stroud and write one on Levis but maybe it's laziness but I just felt more confident about Anthony Richardson and I didn't want to post the clips onto my burner account because then I knew people would have kind of got the sense of where I was going so I posted the second the pick was in through the article up. And yeah, I'm glad you guys were liking that there. But yeah, I'm just over the moon about this pick. And I really, really think, again, I think this is superstar potential.
Starting point is 00:17:12 Like I really, really think this is superstar potential in Indy. Yeah, Sky's certainly the limit. And one more thing I wanted to touch on about his fit with Indy. So let's say that they don't want to start him right away. Week one, Gardner Minshew is, is the starter. I do imagine they'll still have a package of plays ready for him, whether it's short yardage and goal line stuff, wildcat, I don't know, whatever. They'll probably find a way to get Richardson on the field, even if he's not the starter. So I don't think it's going to, and they'll probably get him practice reps too. Like So I don't think it's going to – and they'll probably get him practice reps too.
Starting point is 00:17:45 I don't think it's going to be a thing where he's just completely shut out and the starter gets all the reps in the game and in practice and everything. They'll have a plan because their long-term plan is not Gardner Minshew. They're going to do everything they can to get Richardson ready even after the season has started if he's not the starter. Yep, yep, 100% agree. And hey, Gardner-Rinchu and Anthony Richardson already have that past relationship
Starting point is 00:18:09 working with the same quarterback trainer. So that's always a good thing to have right there. Coming up, guys, we're going to talk about some other needs that the Colts need to address in the draft and kind of where they go with the rest of their picks. But first, let's hear from our sponsor, Built. Looking for a delicious snack but don't
Starting point is 00:18:25 want all the sugar and calories? Then you need the best tasting protein bar ever. It's Built. You've got to try this. If you're like me and you want to make healthier snack choices but you don't want to compromise on taste, I've got just the thing for you. It's Built Bars and Built Puffs. Built Bars are healthy and taste amazing. Seriously, they taste so amazing, you won't even think they're good for you. Again, you've really got to try this here. And now you don't even really need to wait to get that box. For years, we've been talking about how ordering Built Bars at Built.com,
Starting point is 00:18:53 but now you can get them at your local Walmart or Sam's Club while still getting your specialty flavors at Built.com. That's right. Head to your nearest Walmart today, walk into the pharmacy section, and grab yourself a box of built bars. You can pick up a four box of cookies and cream bar, double chocolate bar, or coconut puff. If you're close to a Sam's Club, run in and get a 13 bar box with our hit flavors, brownie, batter, puff, and churro puff. You guys can thank me later. All right, Jake. So talking about what
Starting point is 00:19:22 the Colts need, I'm going to just kick it to you because look, the Colts need um I'm gonna just kick it to you because look the Colts got an A-plus draft regardless I don't care who they take they could take me in the second round and I'd be fine with it you know like they could take Stetson Bennett here in the round two I don't care I don't care they got my guy I don't care but uh Jake what needs you think the Colts need to go after here with the rest of their picks yes I mean quarterback was never much of a question as to if that was going to be the first pick. Right. But so what I'd like to see them do, they got to obviously do something like they need
Starting point is 00:19:55 to add at least another offensive lineman, whether it's someone whose sole purpose is just to be, you know, this swing tackle or swing tackle, or if they sign or if they draft someone to compete, to start at right guard, whatever. I want to see them do that at some point. Uh, but we had also talked about that, that money down slot receiver, right? I think that's something they could still do for sure. Uh, cause their current group i i like the outside starters but i think you need more than isaiah mckenzie as your full season that's this that's the slot you're relying on and then also at corner um now there's i don't know what has happened since we've started recording but like christian gonzalez went a little later than we thought so maybe the
Starting point is 00:20:43 cornerback group isn't going to be as, you know, heavily picked through as we once thought by 35. So maybe there will be some quality players there to pick from. Corner might be the next position I would take, especially if there's some widely regarded first round picks still there at 35. Yeah, I would again say, again, I don't know who just went cause I'm also on airplane mode right now. So Jake, I was kind of,
Starting point is 00:21:08 I was kind of hoping that you were keeping an eye on this, but you guys, you guys can throw it. Yeah. You guys can throw it. You say words and I will check. Okay. You guys can throw it in the comments.
Starting point is 00:21:20 If I say someone that's already been taken, but I would keep a close eye on Cody Malk and also Keely Ringo there on day two I think those are two guys the Colts are very high on and also I think they'd just be great fits here in Indy wide receiver man I think the flowers is gone oh your boy your boy who do you go right the Ravens so they get Lamar Jackson Odell Beckham Zay Flowers oh I love Zay Flowers. That's a great pick. That's a nice move, yeah. So, okay, I won't say Zay Flowers then.
Starting point is 00:21:50 I won't say Zay Flowers. But I do think there are other guys that could target there early in round two. Deontay Banks is someone that you guys are throwing at me here in the chat. And I do think he would be a phenomenal fit as well. Zach, sorry, I have to interrupt you real quick. Did you see in any universe that Emmanuel Forbes was going to go before Christian Gonzalez? Because that happened.
Starting point is 00:22:13 It's kind of like when Washington took Dotson over a couple other wide receivers last year too. It's kind of what they do. They have that conviction. Hey, Dotson ended up being a stud for them last year. So I wouldn't doubt Ford's being, if Forbes can get up to like one 80, I could see it being really,
Starting point is 00:22:29 there's a, there's a receiver run going right now. Smith and jig, but went 20 to Seahawks right after that chargers, Quentin Johnston, right after that Ravens, a flowers. I think,
Starting point is 00:22:41 yeah, that's it. Addison's going to go here probably in the 20s as well I would actually like to see the Colts trade up for Addison but if the Vikings are on the clock right now yeah if not you know whatever I don't think they'll trade up but anyway early round two I think corner obviously right guard obviously Osiris Torrance if he's still on the clock still available that's a really good option to give Anthony Richardson some more familiarity there on the offensive line but again Cody Mao Keelyingo, I think those are two guys that we could really see the Colts
Starting point is 00:23:08 target there at 35. Especially again, if Ringo's there, I really feel like that's the guy. That's, you know, no source info there. I just really feel like he's the type of guy that Gus Bradley would really like. And again, this cornerback room is not great. So they probably need some more bodies out there. I think Keely Ringo could be a guy that could start on day one. Yeah, I absolutely agree. And, you know, we've heard some buzz about Juju Brents as well. But you kind of identified Ringo as a perfect fit a while back. And I really haven't found any reason to not agree with that like I think it
Starting point is 00:23:46 makes a lot a lot of sense size athleticism toughness ball skills like there's you know they need the position and he seems perfect for the scheme I will say this if we're doing if this is gonna if 2023 is the year of the Morocco Brown draft because he got his guy at four yeah like Morocco Brown was the champion of anthony richardson in that colts room like don't get me wrong i bet uh shane steichen and chris ballard and jim ursae were all really really high on him but it was morocco brown morocco brown was head over heels he was feeling like he was feeling about dio as he does about as he does about uh anthony If this is all the Morocco Brown
Starting point is 00:24:26 draft, I 100% believe it's going to be Keeley Ringo at 35 because he was there at that Georgia Pro Day. He met with Keeley Ringo after the Georgia Pro Day. If you guys look at pictures from that day, he's right around Keeley Ringo all day. You really won't miss him there so again if this is the Morocco Brown draft if this is his test run at GM like I think Keeley Ringo could be the pick there at 35. Only thing left to do is see. Yeah yeah I think again I think there's going to be a lot of good options for the Colts at 35 and then obviously again past 35 going to 79. When I say this, I want to say this real quick. Best player available does not exist. There's no such thing as best player available.
Starting point is 00:25:10 It's best player available within our needs and within what makes sense. Because then you would just be taking running backs or whatever every single round if you're taking best player available. But I will say at 79, the Colts can go in so many different directions. You know, they could draft whatever they don't take out of guard and center or guard and cornerback at 35, you know, take the other one at 79. They could go wide receiver. They could go linebacker. I think linebacker is definitely in play there at number 79. They could go tight end.
Starting point is 00:25:39 You know, Chris Ballard has been professing his love for this tight end class recently and how strong it is. And, you know, again, it's really Kylan Granson, Jelani Woods, and then you have some question marks behind them there. So I could see them going tight end. I could see them going tackle. You could see them really going anywhere with that pick. Safety, I think, is an underrated need as well.
Starting point is 00:25:59 Maybe defensive tackle again just to get, you know, more bodies in there. Like 79 is going to be wide open. And the really cool thing is they have Anthony Richardson, and they still have 35 and 79. And all those picks on day three, those multiple fifth rounders and stuff like that, I'm feeling good, man. I'm feeling good. I don't know about you guys.
Starting point is 00:26:23 You guys know me. I will give my honest analysis after everything the Colts do, whether that's good or bad. And even like last year when they got Alec Pierce, I was happy about it, but I wasn't this happy. Like they got him, man.
Starting point is 00:26:37 They got Anthony Richardson. I'm pumped. And again, I'm excited to see what they do the rest of the draft. I'm excited to see that the Colts are not all in just on 2023 and saying 2023 or bust. They are all about building this roster up and building around Anthony Richardson. And I'm just so excited about it. No, this is a great time.
Starting point is 00:26:58 Like from someone who is just been around Colts fans physically and online, of course, you know, since Andrew Luck retired. So let's let's just start it with 2019. It's been a lot of somber vibes for the last four or so years, with the exception of the second half of 2020 when Philip Rivers kicked it on. But even then, you knew that was just for a year, maybe two. This has got to be the most hope that's been felt for this franchise in a while, since Andrew Luck started getting hurt, really. Since it started to look like Andrew was on the downturn of his career, this is probably the most optimistic things I've looked. You've got a brand new quarterback who fits what the NFL is going towards, but you're getting like the Ferrari model of it, essentially, or potential Ferrari
Starting point is 00:27:54 model. You probably got to fine tune some things, but no, no one has looked, no, no, no cars looked this pretty going into it. We'll put it that way. No, this is really good. And the Colts know what they need to do now. The quarterback, that decision being made is huge now. Like, that's off their chest. They can focus on other things. And that's going to be huge because now they can support that quarterback. They can build infrastructure for the rest of
Starting point is 00:28:25 the team, make sure that defense continues to do its part. Cause last year, you know, the, the offense continually failed the defense. So they need to make sure that the defense can keep up its end of the bargain. So they've, they've done what they needed to do so far. Yep. And, and again, this is going to be a process for the Colts. I don't expect them to be division winners next year. I don't even expect them to be in the playoffs next year. I think this is going to be a slow build up, but they have their guy. They have their guy.
Starting point is 00:28:56 Their young, explosive playmaker at quarterback that they can build around. And I'm just beyond excited for all of you Colts fans that have followed us and will continue to follow us.
