What is up, friends?
This is Jake Arthur and Zach Hicks of HorseshoeHuddle.com.
And we are here today just kind of catching up.
I'm off the pro day circuit. We
are back together doing this thing, both of us again. So it's time to catch up a little bit on
the goings on of the Colts and some bigger moves that have been going on around outside of them.
And I think, you know, every offseason, we kind of get to the point where the fans get fed up with the Colts in action.
And it feels like this year it's like kind of extra spicy.
So, of course, the Colts have signed essentially all of their free agents back except for Julian Blackman, which is great because as we've covered before, Michael Pittman would have been the top receiver on the market.
Kenny Moore would have been the top nickel.
Grover Stewart would have been 1A or 1B with DJ Reader as the top nose.
You know, so the Colts have made some big moves.
It's just not sexy that they've been bringing back their own guys.
So that's great that they have brought back some of their own cornerstone pieces.
But one move in particular, I think has sent some over the edge. And that is Legereus
Sneed, the cornerback from the Chiefs that we've talked about ad nauseum here over the past couple
months, it seems. He was traded to the Tennessee Titans, the AFC South rival Tennessee Titans
last week. Four-year deal worth $76.4 million up to, including $55 million in guaranteed money and a $20 million signing bonus.
So pretty fat cash.
The $19 million is probably a little lower than what people thought was going in.
But Zach and I were just discussing this offer.
The guarantees is what really sweetens the pot.
Did you say, Zach, that it's the most among all NFL corners?
Yeah, the $55 million guaranteed is, I believe,
it's the most among cornerback contracts out there. So it's a pretty big commitment that the Tennessee Titans
are committing to LeJarius Knee.
They're going all in with him.
And look, we talked about him ad nauseum on this podcast,
like you mentioned, Jake, and how while we really wanted him in indie there
were some concerns with the knee there were some concerns uh with you know giving up capital and
a gigantic historic contract to a guy who's never been a pro bowler never been an all pro despite
you know he's a good player like don't get me wrong i'm not saying anything bad about legeria's
need i think it was a great move for the tennessee tit Titans, but that's a lot of money to commit to a
guy with some questions. Now, would I have committed that money if I were in the Colts
situation and the Colts spending? Yeah, probably. I probably would have. Eventually, you got to take
the risk, and the Colts are just not taking that risk with him, and the Tennessee Titans are,
and we'll see what happens in the future with that, but I really do think LeJarrius need was
the risk that the Colts could have afforded to take.
And even if it blew up in their face, like, look, you still went for it.
You know, you still went for that lockdown number one corner.
That could have been a fantastic player on the outside for you.
And now we're at this situation where we're looking at the cornerback room.
We're looking at the safety room with not many options still out there.
And we're kind of just begging for the draft to save us again.
So I do think, you know, again, it wasn't much to trade for the Jerry's.
And it was a twenty twenty five third and a twenty twenty four seventh round pick.
Yes, the contract was a little bit heavy, but I think this was a move the Colts should have made.
I think it's a move they could have made.
But ultimately, you know, when we started getting the reports that, you know,
Jim Irsay's already spent $200 million this offseason in contracts,
that's when we should have all known that it was kind of over at that point,
that the Colts weren't going to be big players going forward
and LeJarrius Sneed wasn't coming into Indy.
So, yeah, it's a bummer.
I really think this was the move the Colts could have made and should have made.
But now we have to see him twice a year.
We have to see LeJarrius State twice a year,
and we'll see how that deal ages for the Tennessee Titans.
Yeah, and then so we're going to kind of morph this
into also talking about, you know, if they stand pat
or don't make any moves that really help them before the draft,
what are the repercussions of that?
You know, this is really going to land on Anthony Richardson's shoulders to bounce
back and be a huge part of the offense and really push them over the edge. They're getting a lot by
Richardson and other guys being healthy, but it's also going to put a lot on the draft class to
perform. And you're just not doing yourself any favors if you don't do anything else.
So they've got roughly 18 million in cap space right now.
I believe that is up to date.
I looked at, we looked at the most current contracts and they appear to be on there.
That's for over the cap.
About 4 million, I think, Zach, you said needs to be allocated towards the draft class.
A tiny bit more, kind of a minuscule amount more to undrafted guys.
But you have a little bit
of wiggle room plus there are some contracts you can move around converting to guaranteed
bonuses and things like that to create a little bit of cap space so they don't have to be done
they are likely not going to make any big moves um i'm not gonna say that it's a like they
absolutely could have done this neat thing.
It would have been a smart move for them to do so.
The risk.
Absolutely.
I'm not going to feel like it's the end of the world that they didn't.
I was somewhat indifferent on it.
Like, I'm cool if they draft a cornerback.
They didn't have to go sign a corner and it be something costly like this neat thing.
They can just go get someone who's capable of starting, which there are a couple names still out there.
But what my concern is, is now we're almost in April.
We're essentially a month out from the draft.
I think we're like 31 days away.
And the only outside players that have been brought in are backups. You have your backup
quarterback now in Joe Flacco, and you have a backup nose tackle in Raekwon Davis. You have
clear and obvious deficiencies in the secondary. And those kind of came with the same problems last
year, came back to bite you during the season. Like we saw that was a problem. And Chris Ballard is a guy that overcorrects problems a lot of the time,
the next off season.
So this tells me they're probably,
they could be going heavy in the draft,
but they're making it.
So they have to,
which I think it was an episode last week where you and I talked about now
you you're making it.
So you have to do these things in the draft.
You don't really have the wiggle room.
You have to do it. Like you have to take a corner in the first couple rounds now if
you don't do anything else a safety that market is what it is because it's not a great draft class so
the free agent market for safeties there's still some options there um but my my issue is just that
you're forcing yourself to draft for some needs or they're just going to go
on um you're just not going to address them essentially or you're going to have to
wait it out and get guys that are afterthoughts on the market and i just like i just don't think
that's the best way to go about it yeah like don't get me wrong i i understand the philosophy we know
what the philosophy is i mean we're in what year eight of this philosophy of team building here with Chris Ballard, where we'll take measured shots at free agency. But at the end of the day, it's all about developing the homegrown talent. It's about developing and extending the homegrown talent in making this team a team built from the draft, not built from free agency. And that's fine. Like as long as you're hitting on your draft picks,
which he has been hitting on his draft picks.
Like if you look at this Colts roster, it's not a great roster.
It's not a roster that you look at on paper and you say that's super winning
roster, but it's not bad.
Like it's not a bad roster anywhere.
Even looking at corner and safety, not being very good.
You have playmakers at running back wide receiver.
You have a really good offensive line.
You have a solid pass rushing group. You have linebackers that are capable.
It's a fine roster, but it feels like the Colts could have taken some sort of step this offseason to take this roster from fine to maybe more than fine. And instead it was kind of, you know,
my buddy Ben Solak said it really well on the ringer podcast the other day.
It's just a boring offseason.
They're just so boring in the offseason, which sometimes that's fine.
Sometimes that's good.
And if you hit on your draft picks, boring is perfectly fine.
Staying the course, hitting on draft picks, having draft picks,
coming and becoming superstars is great.
But at some point, you got to take that risk.
And when you have your quarterback on that rookie contract,
I do think it is time to take that risk. And when you have your quarterback on the rookie contract, I do think it is time to
take that risk.
Maybe they want to wait another year.
But, you know, again, we've seen eight years of the Chris Ballard method.
I don't know if that risk is ever going to come in free.
So you like Anthony Richardson could come out this next season, like the league on fire,
have 5000 total yards and 40 touchdowns.
And I still don't think the Colts would do much in free like outside free agency next year. I just don't think that's who Chris Ballard is. And I don't
think that's who Jim Irsay is anymore. I don't think that's who they are. So, you know, maybe
this was the one last time for some people to maybe get their hopes up. But I just, I think
this is just the way it is. The Colts are going to be boring in the off season and it really comes
down to development and the draft.
And that's kind of just what it is now.
They're always kind of what it's always been since I've been in India,
at least.
Right.
Right.
And so you mentioned Anthony Richardson and like what he might do the next
season.
We're actually going to go ahead and talk about here in a minute,
why this approach puts a lot of pressure on his shoulders.
But first buying tickets to your favorite events
should not be stressful, not like this offseason at least. Game time is the fast and easy way to
buy tickets for all of the sports, music, comedy, theater, entertainment in general near you. With
killer deals on last minute tickets and their best price guarantee, you can stop stressing over the
tickets and start getting jazzed for the fun that you're actually
going to have. Personally, I love game time because again, I'm not always a huge planner.
So if it's last minute and I feel like just throwing something together, a nice little date
night, whatever, go right to the game time app, see what's going on around Indy. And they're
going to have probably the best prices either way. And that's, you know, they're the best price for last minute ticket deals.
They've got this guarantee where if you find a better price in the same section or row
for less, they'll credit you 110% of the difference.
And that right there is a guarantee because they're giving you more than your original

All right, Zach.
So we kind of glossed over this a little bit early.
So by basically running it back with the same roster you did last year,
which again was fine, it was knocking on the doorsteps of the playoffs,
you're kind of saying, all right, well, the missing link
that was going to send us over is Anthony Richardson,
a guy who didn't really get a full rookie season,
and now you're kind of putting this pressure on him that, all right, ma'am,
you are the missing link. You are the guy that's going to put us over.
Sure. The, the off season, again, it's not over. There's the draft.
There's seven rounds of the draft.
And we've seen the Colts make impactful free agent signings in April.
You know, like this isn't all done. It just doesn't look great yet. It doesn't look great right now.
So what do you think about this? If I'm doing devil's advocate, I think I've done a whole show
on this. The Colts are getting a lot back by not lifting a finger and just simply getting guys back
who were hurt. Anthony Richardson, Jonathan Taylor, Evan Hull, you don't even know what
he's going to contribute. Jelani Woods, the offensive line started, what was it, four or
five games together all year and we're still good. So you're getting a lot of contribution,
positive contribution back just from guys getting healthy. That's great. But I love what you said basically about your treading water status quo but let's
get this roster from decent to pretty good like in the end you're trying to win games you're trying
to get in the playoffs and you're trying to compete to get to the Super Bowl like that's
not every team's goal every year but what's to say you can't try? Yeah. So I have a couple thoughts running
through my head about this. And the first one being, um, I believe Stephen Holder put it out
there the other day that the Colts believe, you know, the thing that puts them over the edge
compared to last year is Anthony Richardson at quarterback rather than Gardner Minshew.
Now he didn't say that verbatim. He just kind of implied that with what he put out there.
And I don't think that's wrong. and I don't think that's wrong I really
don't think that's wrong as someone who watched every single snap that the Colts played last year
multiple times on film I firmly believe they make the playoffs with Anthony Richardson at quarterback
rather than Gardner Minshew heck I think they might even win a playoff game with Anthony
Richardson that might be a little too far but I really do think they make the playoffs with
Anthony Richardson at quarterback so I don't think that's a wrong thought process here, but the lack of making risky investments
for a chance at upgrading this all season, I don't think it necessarily says, Anthony, you have to be
the guy who puts over the top. I think it says one of two things, and it just depends on what you want
to believe or how you believe the Colts view it. They could view it the way that Stephen Holder put it out there,
that, hey, Anthony Richardson, we believe he's that big of an impact,
and just him on the field makes us better by default,
so we don't need to make these bigger splashes and stuff like that.
But the other one, the other one that this could be
is that they're not sold yet.
They're not sold on him yet because he played, what, four and a half games.
Not even four and a half games only not even four and
a half games like four games last year in total I think it was 11 quarters that he played last
season maybe they're just not sold on him being the guy so why are you going to throw everything
all in when you don't know who he is you don't know if he's going to be the guy now my counter
argument to that if you pick that side is nobody in that building is going to draft another
quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts so who cares if you don't think he's the guy yet you go all in
regardless kind of like the Tennessee Titans are doing like they're not picking well they might
pick another quarterback besides Will Levis but you know what I mean like they're going all in
just to give him no excuses where the Colts it's like all right see if you can outperform what
Gardner Minshew did last year with the same roster um I don't think that's necessarily wrong it's
just I don't know I think it could be one of roster. And I don't think that's necessarily wrong. It's just, I don't know.
I think it could be one of the other way.
I don't think it necessarily means like, hey, we're expecting you to be this playoff quarterback
in year one, or it's, hey, let's treat this like his rookie season.
We're not going all in.
We're not going all out and rebuilding.
We're going to give you a capable roster, do what you can, and then we'll go from there
after the season.
And I know that's like, that feels so slow for Colts fans who are watching year eight of Chris Ballard thinking like why
are we playing this so slow but if you think about this in terms of like the way a normal
team operates it's year two of the head coach it's year two of the quarterback you're not even
year two of the quarterback because he didn't play last year it's okay to take things slow
like I think we'd all be fine with this approach if Chris Ballard wasn't the one who picked Shane
Steichen. If this were a different GM that picked Shane Steichen, and this was year two of that GM,
I think all of us would be perfectly fine with what the Colts have done this offseason. But
because it's year eight of Chris Ballard, we're all sitting here being like, oh my gosh, another
offseason of just, you know,
half measures and bringing guys back and not trying to upgrade the roster. Whereas it's like,
we can't think of it as Shane Steichen and Anthony Richardson year eight, you know,
they're in year one or year two, respectively. So it's like, you know, I don't know if it's really them thinking Richardson makes them this, this playoff Superbowl contender in year one.
I think honestly, it's probably closer to let's see what this kid's got first with the cable
roster.
And then maybe we can go all in down the,
down the line.
Now I don't know what all in looks like with Chris Ballard,
because there's no indication that all in with Chris Ballard is signing a
bunch of free agents like the Texans and the Titans had done this off season.
But maybe if they see a full season of Richardson where he looks pretty good,
that changes next year. I, again, I don't know if it will, but I do think it's not all, you know,
I don't think they're like appealing to the authority of Richardson being this second coming
this season, uh, rather than it being just cautious about him and not going all in with
risky investments until they've really seen him out there. I, I, I'm not saying I would do the
same thing. I'm just saying I would do the same thing.
I'm just saying that could be what they're going about this offseason.
That's certainly possible.
I think the problem for me is just, again, the Snead thing was kind of the breaking point
for a lot of people this offseason who did have some patience.
It's not even that LeJarrius Snead went to another team.
Shoot, go to the bears or
like the chargers some i don't care it's just that it's another impactful move by the division
yet again you're seeing three other teams trying to get better and moving past you while you're
just kind of chilling and you're just saying all right well our quarterback coming back is going
to be the difference or for your for your devil's advocate argument it's
another review year you know yeah uh so either way that's tough to sell to fans uh it's it is
it's tougher because the gm is in year eight though it's not it's not tough to sell if it's
like in year two new gm year two and richardson year one and a half or whatever it is it's tough to sell
when chris ballard's in year eight and and i totally get fans who are frustrated with that
even if like when i take a step back and if you view chris ballard as being in year two
along with those guys it's honestly not that big a deal but because it's chris ballard in year eight
i totally get the frustration because it's like, come on, man. Eventually you have to take a risk to like put your job on the line with
something.
I know he's done that with Anthony Richardson essentially because of
Richardson doesn't, doesn't work out. He's not going to be an indie,
but like take some other risk. What's the biggest risk he's taken?
You know, as the Colts GM, the Carson Wentz trade never blew up in his face.
The Matt Ryan trade never blew up in his face.
Like those weren't really a risk for him.
They are a risk for the guy that's no longer here.
So like, where's his big risk to make the roster better
that could potentially blow up in his face?
We've never really seen that.
And I don't know if we'll ever see that from him.
He just kind of, he kind of does his thing, you know?
That's kind of what he does.
I just had a random thought.
Isn't it funny at the beginning of last season, they refused to re-sign one of their,
arguably their best player yet because they were in a new head coach.
And now that that head coach has played a whole season,
they are bringing everybody back.
If your contract's up, you are back.
Even our worst free agents, they said.
You know what?
You know what, though?
I saw enough of Shane Steichen to be excited about that too. i totally get it i'm all on board with like pretty much 90 of the dudes
they brought back bring them back like i'm totally in on that yeah yeah but coming up guys we're
going to talk about how big this upcoming draft class is for the colts like look maybe they make
one more move here this offseason like safety or corner but at the end of the day, the way the Colts are going to improve next year
is Anthony Richardson and this next draft class.
So we're going to talk about that here coming up.
But first, say goodbye to busted brackets
because FanDuel lets you bet on every game of the tourney,
whether you're betting on a big upset, which just have not happened this year.
There's been no upsets apparently this year,
or a one seed, which is the way to go apparently.
It's time to go dancing on America's number one sports book.
Right now, new customers get $200 in bonus bets
if your first $5 bet wins.
That's 200 bucks that you can use on point spreads,
money lines, and you can even pick
who's gonna win it all.
And look guys, brackets are fun.
Brackets are very fun. But if you're like me and my family, every one of my family pick UConn to win it all. And look, guys, brackets are fun. Brackets are very fun. But if you're like me
and my family, everyone in my family pick UConn to win it this year in the men's bracket.
How are you going to decide who wins? That's not even fun right there. So go to FanDuel.
It's much more fun to go on there. Visit FanDuel.com slash locked on and bet on college
hoops until they cut down the nets. All right, Jake Jake we're talking about this upcoming 2024 draft class
for the Colts and look we don't know who the selections are going to be but we know whoever
the Colts end up picking they're going to have to be big time contributors in year one you know it
could be a receiver in the first round corner in the first round edge rusher whatever the heck they
go it's they're going to have to be a big time player. A round two guy probably has to be a big time player for the team.
Round three guy, you know, depending on where they go with that,
those guys are going to have to produce right away.
And, you know, I think if you're looking at the state of the roster right now
and looking at the state of the team,
it's pretty obvious what position they're going to go round one.
You know, I'm not saying that they're 100% going to go that position,
but it feels like cornerback has to be the play, you know I'm not saying that they're 100% going to go that position but it feels like
cornerback has to be the play you know at pick 15 you know I would actually say safety is currently
going to be the play but there's just no safety worth taking at 15 so if you look at this you
know they're kind of doing the thing that we were terrified of a couple weeks ago or two weeks ago
whatever going in a free agency where it's like, at least get a veteran corner in here, get a veteran safety in here so you don't feel pigeonholed.
And with this draft class coming up, we didn't want them to be pigeonholed at a position that
had to start right away. But now it's looking like whatever corner they take, whatever safety
they take in this class, those guys are probably going to have to start from day one. And we kind
of see how it goes when you start a young player at those positions, there's going to be a lot of struggles. And as a result, your team's
not going to be, you know, you're going to have the 30th ranked defense like the Colts had last
year. So we'll see how it is. But yeah, from from just the looks of it, no, regardless of who they
take, you know, if they take, you know, Brian Thomas at 15, Quinnian Mitchell at 15, if they
take a safety in on round two, round two, Tyler Newben, whoever
the heck it is, those guys are going to have to come in from day one and be producers.
And there's really no room for error.
Like if they struggle, who else is going to supplant them?
Is it going to be a Jalen Jones?
Is it going to be Alec Pierce again?
Is it going to be Ronnie Thomas, who the Colts didn't even play over Ronnie Harrison in the
final game last year.
You know, I don't really know what the backup plan is if they bring in these 21, 22 year olds that struggle from day one.
So I don't know. I hate relying so much on the draft class to do everything so early in their careers.
But it's kind of the way the Colts are going with it. And it's kind of the way that Chris Ballard has operated in the past.
And the problem off of that is they love the Tracy players who a lot of times are raw and need development.
And there's not time for that really.
So you get an Uber athlete who's been pretty raw in college,
a receiver say like you basically take like another Alec Pierce or we were
expecting him to kind of be a star in year one.
Like that's doesn't seem very likely. So I know they're always going to say they like the guys they have.
They just aren't going to say that. But it's like you really are putting a lot.
You're putting a lot of weight on this draft class. Like,
are you really cool with with, you know, Jalen Jones again, all year and risking Juju Brent's health as well,
because we know he's not been able to stay healthy and, you know,
going with a, without a rookie corner, like you have to do it.
So it's just really tough. Like, like you mentioned,
you would love to have the luxury of getting these positions,
not having to do it.
Like free agency is for making sure that the draft,
that you can be patient with these players
and that they're not all luxury picks,
but that it's not a dire need all of a sudden.
Because again, we've seen how rough it can be
with injuries and lack of depth at certain spots
that haven't been addressed yet.
With that, they're going to make us all shut up because they're going to go grab a starting corner for $6 million or something
and then a decent corner who will play for safety who will play for $3 million.
They'll get their Rodney McLeod or Mike Adams.
They'll get their very playable veteran and then we'll all have to shut up after that.
But I mean, as of now, March is almost over
and we just still have a whole lot of questions.
Yeah, like as the roster stands right now,
they have to go corner and safety early.
Like they have to go those positions early in this draft
and it's not a good safety class.
No.
For me personally, it's not a great corner class outside of the top couple guys.
Like, I like some day three guys.
And I like a lot of the nickel corners.
But I don't like many of the outside corners on day two.
That's what I was going to say.
Like, you need an outside guy.
But there's a lot of really good nickels.
Like, after, once you get, like, through the top 40 or so picks, it's a lot of nickel guys.
Yeah.
Yeah. So, it's just, it's a lot of nickel guys. Yeah.
Yeah.
So it's just,
it's a weird,
cause he,
you know, it's funny.
Chris Bauer typically pigeonholes himself at positions of strength and
draft classes,
but I don't really see corn.
Like if you were doing that this year,
you would pigeonhole yourself at wide receiver because it's such a loaded
wide receiver class or maybe offensive line.
But they didn't have any free
agents at those spots or any key free into those spots so those spots are fine on the roster where
it's corner and safety that are lacking and it's just brutal safety class and it's just not a great
corner class either so I don't know we'll see what happens here the Colts could obviously shake it up
and and still go wide receiver early but they're gonna need a corner somewhere they're gonna need
a safety somewhere they definitely need a safety you know maybe they don't go corner but they're going to need a corner somewhere. They're going to need a safety somewhere. They definitely need a safety.
You know, maybe they don't go corner, but they definitely need a safety in here.
It can't just be Nick Cross and Daniel Scott.
I almost said Daniel Thomas.
Daniel Scott back there, because I just don't think that's a viable option for this defense. So again, we'll see what the Colts do.
But as it stands right now, you know, this 2024 draft class is going to have to do a lot for the team,
