Starting point is 00:00:01 The Colts appear to finally have their head coach fresh off of the Super Bowl. Who is it? Who's coming to Indy? And what should we expect? Let's get to it. Starting point is 00:01:03 available to people worldwide. And they have a special offer for our listeners. Just get 10% off your first month at BetterHelp.com when you use promo code LOCKEDON. I am Jake Arthur. He is Zach Hicks. You know the two of us from HorseshoeHuddle.com. I think we've finally reached this point. We've been yakking to you guys for weeks now, but who is going to be this next head coach?
Starting point is 00:01:30 Now, nothing has been specifically announced from the Colts because they literally will not do it until the pen is done on the paper anymore, but the cat is out of the bag. It looks like the Colts are zeroing in on Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen as the head coach. We'll go ahead and give a quick round of applause to Zach, because when we started talking about who the next head coach would be, that was Zach's kind of top option, but probably not realistic, because we didn't think Eagles guys would really want to come here because of the Frank Reich thing. So it was kind of a pipe dream of, I would love Shane Steichen,
Starting point is 00:02:06 but it's probably not going to happen. Well, it looks like it might very well be happening. So that is awesome news. And really more than anything, the search is finally done. What do you think? Oh, man. I mean, before we even get into talking about reactions to getting Shane Steichen, I'm so happy this is finally over.
Starting point is 00:02:27 Like, so many good feelings the second I saw that report happen. Now, I really wish it didn't happen on Super Bowl Sunday. You guys are listening to this on Monday, the day after. But for my best understanding of why it happened on Super Bowl Sunday is the Colts were trying to be courteous in telling the other finalist, hey, we're not going with you. We're going with this other guy, Shane Steichen. Just so they wouldn't wake up to the news tomorrow being like, oh, I didn't get the job and they never told me. So they're trying to be courteous. But unfortunately, when you tell these other candidates something, it always gets to Ian Rappaport and Adam Schefter.
Starting point is 00:03:00 They have sources everywhere and they're always going to hear it. So unfortunately, it did come out on Super Bowl Sunday who the Colts are going to be hiring. But again, at the end of the day, we're pretty happy here. We're pretty happy. I know Jake and I were kind of scrambling today because of Super Bowl Sunday, we had our own plans and then we had to be writing a lot. But yeah, no, it's great, man. Shane Steichen. I'm just happy that this search is over and they're getting a real good head coach. And I can go back to thinking that Jim Irsay is a good owner and Chris Ballard is doing a right thing. And Jeff Saturday is just a nice former player that came in and helped us get our next quarterback
Starting point is 00:03:38 and helped us get our next head coach. I don't have to be worried about the constant dread of a Jeff Saturday just just like over my shoulder being like, Hey buddy, I'm always here. I can always be your head coach again. You know, we're, we're moving forward with a really, really good head coaching candidate. No more of this dysfunction and craziness. And Oh, Jim Mercer is just going to do Jim Mercer once. Like we're finally into a better place. Like the place we've been the last four years, obviously not amazing,
Starting point is 00:04:04 but it feels like we're getting back to being a normal franchise with this hiring it was it has really just been a crazy like three or four months since the jeff saturday hire at interim head coach to this whole head coaching search uh but again we're finally moving forward into being a real franchise again so i'm just kind of relieved and it's like a massive weight off my shoulder and i know you feel the same way jake, that, you know, at the end of this, they, they got a good head coach and they're moving forward as a franchise. Yeah, absolutely. It's so Shane Steichen is a forward thinking offensive mind. Again, you're probably listening to this the morning after the Superbowl. So if you watch the Superbow Bowl, the Eagles got off to a hot start. Jalen
Starting point is 00:04:45 Hurts looked great. You know, A.J. Brown, Devontae Smith, those guys were cooking. They had a nice lead going into halftime, ultimately lost, but that offense looked good. Kind of like I predicted, just a little too much Patrick Mahomes in the second half. But man, if Colts fans, if you watch the Super Bowl, you had to be thinking, man, that's not these are some nice play calls, at least. Like, sure, they have the players to go and execute. But I like the play calls. You know, they were gutsy. It's a team that goes for it in certain situations.
Starting point is 00:05:15 It always seems to be four down territory for the Eagles. Man, it's it's nice to not have to question everything all the time now. And at least for now and until September, when games start, we get to feel nice and rosy about these things. Yeah, yeah. And, you know, just talking Shane Steichen, obviously coming up, we're going to talk about his fit and some potential like staffing things and all that here. And that's what this whole week is going to be, just the week of Shane Steichen on this podcast. So don't worry, guys, we're going to jump on out of that. But just my initial reaction is like, this is the way the NFL is going it's all about the young
Starting point is 00:05:50 quarterback and about that young play caller to go with your young quarterback you know we're seeing it with the Cincinnati Bengals with Zach Taylor we're seeing it in San Fran obviously they don't have their young quarterback you know maybe with Trey Lance but they have Kyle Shanahan we're seeing it in Green Bay with Michael LaFleur we We're seeing it, Sean McVay, obviously with the Rams. Like it's getting that young play calling head coach, that innovative play calling head coach, pairing it with a quarterback that is capable and seeing where that goes. And in a lot of cases, it's led to championship game appearances and Super Bowl wins and Super Bowl appearances. So the Colts are definitely following the right trend here. And Shane Steichen, I mean, when you look at his background, his work with
Starting point is 00:06:28 Phillip Rivers, his work with Justin Herbert during that rookie season, and then his work this past season with Jalen Hurts, you're looking at a guy who can be a chameleon, who can call a variety of different offenses that best fit his quarterback, and a guy who's going to get the best out of whatever passer is back there. So the Colts are on the right side of history, I think, the right side of recent history with this type of hire. And, you know, Jim Irsay and Chris Ballard have kind of said that it's all about the next quarterback. Everything going forward is about the young quarterback they're going to take.
Starting point is 00:06:57 They haven't directly said it, but they've hinted at it a lot. You know, everything is about this quarterback that they're going to take high. You need to have the play caller to go with it. And I think with Shane Steichen, they have that guy. Yeah, for sure. So this is obviously a great offseason to have the fourth overall pick and have a really good quarterback draft. And also they're getting the head coach who we've said is going to be the most adaptable and dynamic to whatever quarterback they choose. So we'll dive into more of that here in a moment, you know, talk about the quarterback and what things might look like specifically in Indy with Steichen. But first, the show is
Starting point is 00:07:38 sponsored by BetterHelp. I typically feel like my best self when I'm getting things done, feeling productive, and I'm just checking off those things on my to-do list. When you're at your best, you can do great things, but sometimes life gets you bogged down and you may feel overwhelmed or like you're not showing up in the way that you want to. Working with a therapist can help you get closer to the best version of you because when you feel empowered, you're more prepared to take on everything that life throws at you. I've not personally been to therapy, but I've always been in support of it. You know, people rarely seem to have bad things to say about it. And I've seen the great benefits that it's had for people in my life who have been to therapy. So it's very
Starting point is 00:08:19 beneficial for pretty much everyone. If you're thinking of giving therapy a try, BetterHelp is a great start. It's convenient, flexible, affordable, and entirely online, which if you don't like to go places, that's primo. If you want to live a more empowered life, therapy can get you there.

That's betterhelp.com slash locked on. All right. So just a kind of a small tidbit I want to address before we move specifically into Steichen is he may be looking for a new offensive line coach. Chris Strasser has been with the Colts since 2018, 2019, I think. 2019, yep. 2019. He's gotten the best performance out of the Colts line.
Starting point is 00:09:08 They did obviously regress a bit with some new faces in there. But even with their pillars, like it just didn't look the same for a while. They started to get better. But according to Aaron Wilson down there in Houston, the Houston Texans with new head coach D'Amico Ryans, they have shown offensive line coach Greg Warhop the door and the leading candidate to replace him is Colts offensive line coach Chris Strasser. So I know a lot of Colts fans are going to be are going to welcome that
Starting point is 00:09:38 change probably. But it's interesting because the guy the Colts are apparently denying Jeff Saturday, a lot of people have said maybe not head coach, but maybe offensive line coach. Which it's interesting because the guy, the Colts are apparently denying Jeff Saturday. A lot of people have said maybe not head coach, but maybe offensive line coach. And if there was one area of the team that really improved. Oh, man, I was hoping. Get out of here. No. I was hoping I'd get that out of you.
Starting point is 00:10:01 No, but let me let me segue this into a into a Shane Steichen thing. George Warhop overlapped with Shane Steichen with the Cleveland Browns back in 2013 George Warhop has been an offensive line coach in the NFL since 1996 every single year since 1996 he has been an offensive line coach for someone in the NFL so if Steichen wants to bring a an experienced offensive line coach on board I mean George Warhop is probably a guy that he would be interested in but yeah let, let's get to Shane Steigener. No, no Jeff Saturday. I do not want Jeff Saturday here, no matter what. I'm tired of the name. And honestly, I'm happy just to think of Jeff Saturday as the interim coach who got us our next quarterback and the former player that we all love. No more Jeff Saturday, Jake. Get him out of here. Saturday now returns to his humble abode as a
Starting point is 00:10:44 Ring of Honor member where, where he rightfully belongs. You know, it gets me thinking where's Harry. He stand also, by the way, I'm going to have to do a little research. I've got to find out what he's doing now.
Starting point is 00:10:54 Cause that obviously would be welcome from a Quentin Nelson. But no. So with Shane Steichen, obviously, you know, he doesn't have AJ Brown or Devante Smith, Dallas Goddard, he doesn't have A.J. Brown or Devontae Smith, Dallas Goddard. That offensive line there is nuts. So very different groups of players.
Starting point is 00:11:12 But how do you see this offense in Indy with Steichen pulling the strings? Obviously, there's a whole offseason of moves to be made as well. But what are you picturing right now? Yeah, I mean, I think we can look at Philadelphia and obviously take a lot of the good things he's done there with Jalen Hurts, but it really comes down to whatever quarterback they go with. You know, I think it's impossible to say right now exactly what this offense is going to look like
Starting point is 00:11:38 because we've seen so many different versions of Shane Steichen. You know, when it was Phillip Rivers there and he was the QB coach for Phillip Rivers, you know, they had that Ken Wisenhunt, Frank Reich, you know, quick hitting offense, spread them out wide and just kind of get that ball out quick and get it to the playmakers and let them run after the catch. That was, that was a Ken Wisenhunt thing that he learned when he was the QB coach or Phillip Rivers. And then you get to Justin Herbert in 2020, and this is a freak show quarterback. This is a quarterback who can like just throw the ball on a dime down the field, like 60 yards on the move. I mean, we're talking about the prototypical NFL quarterback. So when Shane Steichen was
Starting point is 00:12:14 offensive coordinator and, you know, Pep Hamilton was the QB coach, we saw a lot of vertical shots. We saw a lot of getting the ball out down the field, a lot of, you know, that Bruce Arian style of, of calling plays. And, you know, that's not at all what would have worked with Phillip Rivers. That's not all what would have worked with Jalen Hurts, but it worked with Justin Herbert. And then you get to Jalen Hurts, you know, Jalen Hurts offense is very collegey, you know, for lack of a better term, very collegey, a lot of read option a lot of rpo a lot of uh qb runs qb powers and stuff like that a lot of in breaking routes to aj brown and then you you dial up a couple shot plays here and there uh to your really start really really good wide receivers
Starting point is 00:12:57 and that's not an offense that would have worked at all with philip rivers obviously and it certainly wouldn't have worked with justin herbert either so we're seeing a guy who can just again be that chameleon to a lot of different types of quarterbacks so when you look at this Colts offense and how it could evolve and how it could change under Shane Steichen it really matters what quarterback they go with if they go CJ Stroud you could see that Philip Rivers type of offense coming back if they go Will Levis you could see that vertical passing type of offense that you had with Justin Herbert. If you go Bryce Young or Anthony Richardson, you could see a lot of the Jalen Hurts style of offense and that RPO get the ball out quick and maybe using your quarterback on some designed
Starting point is 00:13:34 runs. So ultimately, I think we can look at some of these pieces and say how Shane Steichen can utilize them and how he can get them in space and be like, oh, look, Jelani Woods is going to have a big season because Steichen knows how to use tight ends. But it's impossible to say anything right now until we have that quarterback in place, which again, leads to a lot of speculation this offseason. We're going to be going crazy with all that speculation there, of course. But yeah, again, this is the beauty of Shane Steichen. You can look at all these different things that he's called and worked with in the NFL and say, look, he can adapt to any one of these quarterbacks that the Colts could take at number
Starting point is 00:14:08 four. And that's really where the offense is going to go from there. And I think that's what he's going to, you know, he's going to interview these quarterbacks. He's going to really get into the thick of it and pick the guy that he wants. And then he's going to develop an offense that fits that quarterback and fits the playmakers around him. So yeah, I know it's, it's kind of a non-answer from here, from me here. Like we don't really know how it's going to change, but the beauty of it is it can change in so many different ways, you know, and that's why Shane Steichen is such a good hire for the Colts or such a good potential hire, you know, obviously the Josh McDaniels think it happened again, but no, I really, really like this fit and I really like it with, you know, again, the Colts can kind of just sit at four and take whichever guy falls i know obviously
Starting point is 00:14:49 that's not preferred you know go up and get the guy that you think is the guy but like they could take any of these four guys and make it work as sheen steigen is such a chameleon that could that could kind of work with all these guys yeah i i think one of the things I love the most about this official, unofficial hire is that he's not stubborn. I love a guy that can build an offense around the players he has and doesn't try to fit it the other way. I think that's just so invaluable. But you mentioned the quarterbacks, obviously. Now that we, again, unofficially know it's going to be Steichen, do you now lean more Bryce Young and Bryce Young-Stroud-Richardson rather than Stroud-Levis is what it seemed for the last few weeks at least? Does Bryce Young kind of enter that equation a little more now?
Starting point is 00:15:41 Well, Jake, I'll ask you which which of these offenses that Shane Steichen has orchestrated or been a part of you know Phillip Rivers from 2017 to 2019 uh Justin Herbert in 2020 Jalen Hurts the last two years which one of them do you think is the most I guess effective for long-term success I don't think there's a right or wrong answer here but which one which one do you want to go with there jake that that's really what it comes down to golly you know so the the philip rivers one honestly is probably the most sustainable if i had to guess you know right you get stroud in there stroud is obviously more athletic than philip rivers right you you've got a guy like michael pitman who can feast on that that quick the quick stuff obviously you know uh know, Zach Moss, Dion Jackson, Jonathan Taylor, they can catch balls.
Starting point is 00:16:27 And then you have Alec Pierce kind of taking things vertically. So I think that one's probably the most sustained, most sustainable, but again, depending on who that quarterback is, Steichen is willing to open things up a little more, you know, get more movement out of the pocket, do this and that, make it a little extra spicy. um that's a that's a really good question i would like to see them add another playmaking receiver although i think jelani woods is going to hear his number called more often which honestly that's that's such a
Starting point is 00:16:58 huge x factor we've we've seen what offenses how offenses can change when a guy like Kelsey Goddard Kittle, now I'm not saying he is those guys, but like, you gotta, you gotta see if he has that potential. You recently said he could be a top five receiving tight end in the league. So, um, no, obviously I'm just as much as the quarterback. I'd love to see what it means for Pearson woods, really. Yeah. And for me to actually provide some sort of answer for the first time on this episode, because I've been doing a lot of just talking in circles and saying the possibilities are endless. I think it's impossible to not watch this game that we just saw in the Super Bowl and seeing exactly how that Eagles
Starting point is 00:17:41 offense was run and how dynamic it was and just how life was easy for a quarterback like Jalen Hurts even though he was the focal point of the whole offense it was still easy to make a lot of these open reads because he drew so much attention as an ability as a runner and then you obviously had the QB sneaks where that kind of quarterback comes in handy you saw the him bailing from pockets and creating plays you saw QB power creating opportunities on that two point conversion and on other short yardage stuff. I think it's impossible to watch this game and not look at Anthony Richardson and say, Shane Steichen can turn him into what he can be, you know?
Starting point is 00:18:15 And I know it's going to be impossible for Chris Ballard to make that decision because realistically, Chris Ballard is going to be on the hot seat this year. You know, you can't come out and win three games next season and expect to come back yet again. So it's hard to take a quarterback like Anthony Richardson, who has some lengths to go. But I think if you're looking long term and you're looking what Shane Slaking can do with mobile quarterbacks,
Starting point is 00:18:37 it's going to be so tempting to take Anthony Richardson. Like, you have to bet on alien traits. I think when it comes to the NFL, that's how you compete with aliens. You get an alien to compete with an alien. Josh Allen is an alien. Pat Mahomes is an alien. Don't talk too much about aliens right now. There's a lot going on in the alien world right now. Okay. Sorry. Sorry. Josh Allen is a freak. Pat Mahomes is a freak. These are unreal quarterbacks. You need to have a quarterback with that type of talent to compete with them. Anthony Richardson is the only guy in this class that could potentially be that. I'm not saying it's likely.
Starting point is 00:19:18 It's more likely than not that he busts and turns into nothing. But when you have a guy like Shingen Steichen who's shown the ability to work with mobile quarterbacks and work with a quarterback who has his deficiencies and can build on them and create a really good game plan around that, I'm tempted, man. I'm tempted to take, I was tempted to take the risk regardless.
Starting point is 00:19:37 But like when you have someone like Steichen, man, I want Anthony Richardson with him. Like I know it's probably not realistic because of the situation with chris ballard and stuff but like if we're viewing long term i want to take that chance i want to take that chance and i think it's impossible to not watch that super bowl here and think of what anthony richardson could look like in shane steichen's offense yeah again like you said that's the one of the perfect marriages of head coach and quarterback in this whole thing is because Anthony Richardson is so enticing, but he has to have the right head coach and right structure around him. And that's Shane Steichen, at least on paper.
Starting point is 00:20:17 And something you wrote today after this news started to leak out is the potential staff that Shane Steichen could assemble. If you want to tell our friends more about that. Oh yeah. Hey guys, go to horseshoehuddle.com and you can read more about that. But obviously I think we're going to have a whole episode on potential staff and we might want to do that tomorrow, Jake. I think, I think tomorrow is probably a good, because we want to, we want to do potential staffing before he starts announcing that he had some. That's true. We're going to probably jump on that tomorrow. We want to speculate wildly first. Right, exactly.
Starting point is 00:20:50 But make sure you guys go to horseshoehuddle.com and read all about it, potential staffing combinations for Shane Steichen. And we're going to close out the show here in a second, guys. But first, you know, the football season might be over, but we're at the midway point of the NBA season. And now is the perfect time to download FanDuel, America's number one sportsbook. Because new customers get no sweat first bet up to $1,000. That's bonus bets back on your first bet if it doesn't win. Just download the FanDuel sportsbook app. It's safe and secure and super easy to use.
Starting point is 00:21:17 Then you can bet on everything from the money line to point scores to threes drained. Colts fans, I'm sure many of you are also Pacers fans. Unfortunately, I know it's been a rough last month here if you're a Pacers fan, but make sure you guys are locking in some NBA bets. Maybe bet against the Pacers, but maybe you should listen to Tony over at Locked on Pacers first because I know I learned so much more from Tony. I'm kind of a novice basketball fan. I grew up playing basketball, but the NBA game is so different. Tony just makes me so much smarter there at Locked On Pacers. He can help you with some bets here for FanDuel.
Starting point is 00:21:49 Plus, FanDuel lets you combine your bets for a chance at a bigger payout with same game parlay. So don't miss the chance to get your no-sweat first bet up to $1,000 in bonus bets when you go to FanDuel.com That's FanDuel.com slash locked on. That's Fanduel.com slash locked on to learn more.
Starting point is 00:22:07 Make every moment more with Fanduel, an official sports betting partner of the NBA. All right, Jake, I don't really have too much to say here before we wrap it up, but man, again, I just, this head coaching search, I just want to talk a little bit more about it because we have a few minutes here. Like, it was draining. I don't know. Like, i don't know if i'm speaking just for you guys here
Starting point is 00:22:29 i'm just speaking for other analysts and content creators and and people associated with the colts but like just hearing the national reporters being like jeff saturday's the save the favorite he could be the guy jim ursae is going to pick him regardless the constant jokes from other like national not like reporters but like national analysts and stuff like je Irsay, is going to pick him regardless. The constant jokes from other national, not like reporters, but like national analysts and stuff, like Jeff Saturday is going to will the Colts into Stetson Bennett and Levis and stuff, and all this craziness, and not knowing who was making the decisions behind the scenes.
Starting point is 00:22:59 It was scary there for a minute. I don't know about you, Jake. I was scared for a minute there. But it looks like, again, the Colts are kind of getting out of that dysfunction and out of what was these last three months. And it looks, I mean, the future looks so much brighter right now than it did back in November. Yeah, it really does. Because, you know, we, at the start of this whole thing, before they announced who they were even interviewing initially, we were kind of skeptical how it would look.
Starting point is 00:23:30 You know, maybe some old school guys and just, you know, the football guys who aren't necessarily the freshest faces and offensive mind cutting edge, you know, basically not with the rest of the program that is the nfl right and that's just not the case i mean there were plenty of defensive minds but there was a lot of energetic youth that that was involved in uh in the process they had a perfect blend of every football background it seemed and um so i mean i do applaud them for the job they did in in this interview process.
Starting point is 00:24:06 You know, I don't hate that they brought in Versace and Wink Martindale and things like that. I think it's good to get that perspective on guys who've been in the league a zillion years. You know, Brian Callahan, Shane Steichen, it's obviously great that they interviewed guys like that, too. So it maybe went on a little bit, but like if Shane Syken is the guy, it didn't matter that they waited until the Super Bowl. So yeah, it ran on a little bit, but I really have no gripes about the process. Yeah, and at the end of the day,
Starting point is 00:24:38 we've been really hard on Jim Irsay and Chris Ballard for since like September, especially Chris Ballard since September, Jim Irsay obviously since like November, we've been pretty hard on them on this podcast. But you know, I'm man enough to come out here and say like, they got it right, man. Like, again, obviously, it's a crapshoot. And this could be the worst hire in history. And Shane can go on to win one game over the next 10 years. Like what? We don't know, obviously. But I really appreciate that they they interviewed a ton of guys they looked at it they looked at all the info they had available from special teams
Starting point is 00:25:10 coordinators defensive coaches uh offensive coaches you know super experienced inexperienced guys they looked at all of it and they said we need to think about our young quarterback that is the number one thing that matters to us is what is going to lead to success for our young quarterback we're going to bring in here. And they went with the guy who's going to lead to the most success for that young quarterback in Shane Steichen. And I applaud them for it. I mean, Jim Irsay and Chris Ballard, again, we've been super hard on them, but I really think they got this right. I think this is just a phenomenal hire. They navigated through all of this mess pretty well. Obviously, they drove the bus into this mess, but they got us out pretty well. And I'm excited for the future now with the Colts. I'm more excited for the
Starting point is 00:25:54 future now than I have been in the last three months with the Colts. And I think things are on the right path. And honestly, again, you could talk me into any of these quarterbacks at number four. As long as I take a quarterback in the top four, I'm going to be pretty confident going into next season that we're at least going to see some good, fun football. And we're going to be on an upward trajectory going forward. So, yeah, I mean, hats off to Jim Irsay, hats off to Chris Ballard, hats off to Carly and Kaylin and all of them who were involved in this process. It was a tough one for us. Obviously, we're impatient. We were moody. We were angsty. We were snarky, but at the end of the day,
Starting point is 00:26:34 I think they got this right. And I'm very, very happy that the Colts didn't keep spiraling downward and kind of get into embarrassing franchise territory, like, like Washington or something, you know, that they just, they kind of revamped it and they went back to where they were. So I'm, I'm very excited for the future of the Colts. So I want to say, and I'm really happy that we saw this turnaround happen. Yeah. At the end of the day, no one can say they weren't taking this thing seriously.
Starting point is 00:26:53 You know, they conducted the biggest search we've seen in the longest time. They interviewed a bunch of guys. They brought those guys back. They had very lengthy meetings with them. So round of applause, round of applause. That is it for this episode. But like Zach said, it's going to be the week of Steichen, especially if
Starting point is 00:27:10 a McDaniels thing comes up. I swear. We can't even think about that. I was here. I was here. I had to live through it. No, it's, yeah. So obviously, like we said, we're going to talk about Colts and psych and what things are going to look like ahead of time. But if there's something about, if you guys want to tell us what you want to hear about with this, go ahead and tweet us at LockedOnColts, and we'll see if we can fit that in.
