What up, what up, y'all?
This is Jake Arthur and Zach Hicks from HorseshoeHuddle.com.
And today we are talking free agency.
The franchise tag deadline has passed.
We now know who is going to be on the open market and who has basically been claimed
by their team for a year.
Unless, of course, some multi-year deals get hammered out in the next few days.
The illegal tampering period is March 11th through 13th.
And the party officially gets started at 4 p is March 11th through 13th, and the party officially
gets started at 4 p.m. on the 13th next week. So we are very, very close. So today, Zach and I are
going to bring you specifically some of the biggest buzz among free agency type stuff with the Colts
is the possibility of them trading for Chiefs franchise player, cornerback LeJarius Sneed. So we'll
address that. And then we'll get into some other very notable players around the league that,
you know, in years past, we kind of poo-poo the idea of going for the big name guys because we
just don't think it's going to happen. And we kind of known it's never going to happen because it
often doesn't with the Colts. But the vibes seem different this year. So who are some bigger names we could see the Colts actually going for,
whether through free agency or even other Snead-type trade scenarios?
So Zach, why don't you lead us off, man?
Legereus Snead, yay or nay?
Yeah, I mean, I think this is the type of move that Chris Ballard has shown that he would make.
You know, when we talk about him paying in free agency, you know, he has this quote that
he says every single year where you don't want to give a money to be players, but he's
willing to trade a capital for a players are willing to trade his capital for a players
and pay those a players like we saw with DeForest Buckner years ago, like we've seen with how
aggressive he gets when he was trying to get a quarterback.
Now, those didn't work out, but you know what I mean?
Like he he has shown the willingness to make these trades for players that he feels can
be difference makers.
And a guy like Legereus Sneed is a difference maker.
I know he's never been a pro bowler, an all pro type player, but if you've been watching
the Chiefs at all the last couple of years, that is a guy who is a difference maker at
corner.
Really good, impressed, really aggressive aggressive physical corner, really fast,
too really athletic.
I think he ran the four threes at the Combine a couple years ago.
Just a really, really good, smart, savvy, tough physical player
that the Colts just don't have at corner right now.
They have a lot of young guys, a lot of young guys who are not ready
for that advanced role in the team.
And when you have a guy like Snead who can play inside and out,
who can play man on the backside of your cover three Mabel calls
and take away that backside receiver,
I think it just adds a lot of dimension to your defense.
It kind of brings back what the Colts had in Stephon Gilmore,
but a younger, even better version of what Gilmore was for the Colts in 2022.
So yeah, I think when we're looking at big moves,
the Colts could make this off season outside of, you know, making a move up in the draft or
something like that. I think a trade for a player like LeJarius Sneed makes a ton of sense. So when
the report came out yesterday that the Colts are interested in him, or they have talked to the
chiefs about him, that doesn't shock me whatsoever. Cause it's very much a Chris Ballard type of move if he's going to make that big move. Yeah. And you know, this, I initially saw PFT said that there's apparently
seven teams that have kind of checked in on, on Snead, the Colts being one of them. You know,
you and I, we both know people who would be in the know who have kind of reiterated that there's
some interest there. So, you know, this, this makes sense. For me, we've obviously talked about, you know, the Colts could draft a player,
obviously in the first couple, in the first couple rounds, that makes all the sense in the world.
But if you don't have to have that need, that's real nice. And this is the type of move we've
seen them make, honestly, for years. Snead may not be like a top five corner necessarily,
but we've seen really good Colts defenses with the likes of Avante Davis,
you know, being your top corner.
Xavier Rhodes for that one year.
Stephon Gilmore, like you mentioned last year.
These guys don't have to be necessarily pro bowlers,
but when you're getting above average top cornerback play,
that can be really, really valuable for your defense. And this feels exactly like that.
And because Snead only has that one huge year, again, it didn't get him all pro or pro bowl honors. It may not come at as hefty of a price as one might think initially.
Yeah. And when you look at LeJarrius Snead, like, don't get me wrong, it would probably take him, it would probably take around $20 million a year to lock him up
long-term. It would take close to that. So that is a pretty hefty investment in this guy.
And I know a lot of people are looking at it from that perspective, looking at what the compensation
would be for the team trading for him. From what I've heard from a couple of my buddies who are in
the KC market, they're expecting like either a third and an early
day three pick or a straight up second round pick, they'd be really happy to get for Snead,
which I know some people are looking at this being like, Oh my gosh, a really good corner,
only going for like a second or maybe a third and some change. You got to keep in mind with
Snead, again, 27 year old player has had a lot of knee issues in his career as well. It hasn't
caused him to miss a ton of games, but he have that knee issue so teams are a little wary of that so yeah I do think you know if you have to give up
you know a good 20 million dollars a year for him or you know close to that to lock him up long term
uh yeah I think a third and some change and or just a straight up second is is probably good
compensation and the Chiefs are probably just looking to get younger anyway at cornerback when
they already have an all-pro in Trent McDuffie on the other side so for anyone who's worried about compensation
that's what I've heard again either a straight up second or a third and some change for him
I'm not saying the Colts are 100% doing this move but I do know again the Colts have talked to the
Chiefs I don't think that the conversations have gotten super far as of right now I know one of my
Chiefs guys kind of told me it was like yeah I heard Pittman Jr.'s name was brought up in there.
And I'm like, well, that means it wasn't serious right now because, you know, it kind of, that's the early part of trade talks.
You always throw these crazy, I'm sure the Chiefs also threw a first round pick at the Colts.
I'm sure the Colts threw like a fourth round pick at them.
That's really just how these trade talks go early on.
So they're probably in that phase right now
where they're just puffing their chest and throwing random names and numbers at each other but we'll
see how far it gets but again i think this this is more than just smoke we've seen agents in the
past use the colts with every top free agent saying oh yeah this guy could go to the colts
because the colts have 80 million in cap space this guy could go here because the colts have
this amount of cap space every available quarterback is linked to the Colts
because the Colts didn't have a quarterback.
Not anymore, baby.
Not anymore.
Not anymore.
We off the carousel.
Right, right.
But we've seen this for years.
But this one, I really do think
there is interest from the Colts.
Again, I don't know how far Ballard's going to go.
I don't know where the Chiefs are going to go with this.
But I do believe in this interest here.
And I do believe this is a type of move that the Colts could make as long as that knee for Snead
checks out. As long as that knee checks out, I really do think this is a place where the Colts
could go at cornerback, and again, it would be a major upgrade to their room. Yeah, and financially
they could do it, but it would probably be the only big ticket item they do this offseason. After
the Pittman tag, they've got about 49.3 million in space.
According to over the cap Sneed's marker for just for reference for,
for the franchise tag is 19.8 million in 2024.
Like Zach said, it's for a multi-year deal.
It's still going to come out to an average of about 20.
So they could do it, but you know,
that might mean they have to take a haircut somewhere else. You know,
it probably means certain in-house guy,
like maybe you don't have money for Kenny Moore at that point or Grover,
like they're,
they're not going to bring in Snead and be able to bring everybody else back.
So that's going to, it's going to come with some, yeah,
but it's a little bit there, but coming up,
we're going to look at the offensive
side of the ball and some uh some guys around the league that make a lot of sense for the colts
get buckets with your first bet on fan duel america's number one sports book because right

And something else we want to do guys with the with the offseason coming, or it's here,
but with the free agency about to start in earnest, and the pulse of the league and the
Colts about to just be insane for the next few months. If you guys have any questions you want
us to answer, if we get a bunch of them, we might lump them into entire episodes. But what we really
want to do is, you know, we can't do any of this without you guys.
And we want to talk about what you want to talk about.
So throw us your questions and we will at the very minimum lump some of them together
and just do, you know, little few minute episodes or just depending on the volume,
we'll get them answered one way or the other.
So just on Twitter, X, whatever Elon is,
is having it called these days at locked on Colts and put them there.
If you send them to Zachary specifically,
we'll catch them if we can,
but otherwise please send them to at locked on Colts.
And again,
we'll lump those together and put out some bonus content for you guys.
Cause we do really like answering your questions.
Unlike professional athletes being told about how much you bet on them,
we do want to answer your questions.
So we're going to parlay this into our next topic.
Zach, again, I talked about this at the top.
For those of us that cover the team,
we know the Colts have never really been in the big game
hunting market. So we just immediately that topic, but this year feels like, you know, there,
there might be one or two pieces that really make a lot of sense. Um, I'm looking at wide
receiver specifically here, you know, you maybe want to add some competition to that Z spot.
You know, you have Pittman in the X spot, uh, pretty much nailed down. I'm looking at, you know, you maybe want to add some competition to that Z spot. You know, you have Pittman in the X spot pretty much nailed down.
I'm looking at, you know, Calvin Ridley and Marquise Brown are a couple of guys that can stretch the field.
They've got speed and quickness.
Of course, Ridley is very polarizing.
He's still a very good player, still went over a thousand yards this year.
But, you know, pretty inconsistent.
But I still think a player like Calvin Ridley gives you more than what the Colts have been getting as of late.
And I don't think you have to have a specific type of quarterback play to make it work.
Yeah. And to a degree, I do agree with you where, you know, sometimes we balance out,
hey, this position, we want to go attack in the draft.
This position, we want to attack through free agency,
you have to balance out what you're looking for this upcoming season.
Because if you take a player in year one, or as a rookie,
you're expecting them to be out there on year one,
but you're not expecting maybe as much production
as you would be a free agent that you're bringing in,
where that free agent needs to produce right away.
They need to be gelled perfectly.
They need to act like they're a veteran free agent.
So if you're looking at this wide receiver core and you're saying, you know what?
We just need guaranteed production.
We need a guy who can come in from day one and fill that Z or deep threat type role.
And Calvin Ridley and Marquise Brown are just more developed at this point than a Brian
Thomas or an Xavier Worthy would be in the draft.
I personally think with this draft class at wide receiver,
I wouldn't make a big pay like a big,
I wouldn't go out all out for a receiver and free agency with this draft
class coming up.
We have so many good receivers coming into the league.
And if you can be cost effective with bringing in another receiver,
like a Brian Thomas or Xavier Worthy,
I think even having to go through those lumps with those guys is more valuable
than, you know, giving Marquise Brown like a one year,
like $12 million deal or Calvin Ridley, like a three year,
$45 million deal, whatever that would be to get those guys to Indy.
So I get where you're going with big game hunting in free agency.
And I do think there are ways to improve this roster,
especially on offense and defense.
But I think especially when are ways to improve this roster, especially on offense and defense. But I think,
especially when it comes to wide receiver,
I just don't know if I would go big game hunting.
Like there's a couple of depth guys I'd be interested in.
I'm looking at the names right here.
I mean,
you got Kendrick born from new England,
you know,
a pretty savvy route runner who can get open.
You got Curtis Samuel who won't cost as much.
You can do some underneath stuff for you.
You got Noah Brown who had a't cost as much. He can do some underneath stuff for you.
You've got Noah Brown, who had a big season last year.
I mean, more of a special teams type guy,
but he can do a little bit of that underneath stuff and some yards after catch.
So I think if I were to go wide receiver,
I know that's not the point of this segment here, Jake,
because I know you want to talk big names,
but I just don't see the point in paying
free agent wide receivers, big money anymore,
because we're seeing all these draft classes just littered with talent at
wide receiver.
And you can get talent on the cheap.
You don't need to pay 12 to $15 million a year to get talent at wide
receiver anymore.
I kind of wonder if that oversaturation of talent winds up,
you know,
kind of affecting the position and free agency down the line where
not necessarily like running back where guys like saquon barkley and josh jacobs can't even really
get fair you know fair value but because i mean we've seen guys like t higgins michael pitman
jr those guys are going to get their money like the the top guys those free agents will get their
money but like will there just be a million receivers out there on the market and they're just not going to get paid because the supply you know is way
over demand that's kind of interesting to think of down the road uh but another position i was
looking at uh you know tight end i'm interested to see what they want to do this year do they want
to get someone who's established what do they want because that that is just such a huge
mystery that tight end room right now uh because how much how many eggs you put in the Jelani Woods
basket because the guy was not able to play last year Drew Ogletree the charges against him were
just dropped so perhaps he will factor into that room this year that's not for me to decide um you
know Mo Alley Cox Will mallory like they've got guys
but we know if like a brock bowers fell in their lap they would do that so free agency may not be
the way to go that's probably not a huge priority but i look at like a hunter henry a three down
tight end someone you don't have to have so many special packages for anything like a guy who you
can have out there through a two minute drill three four minute drive whatever and he's going
to be able to stay out there throughout the entire thing I think that's pretty valuable
curious to see what you think on that or really even what the Colts would be willing to do in
terms of free agency for tight ends yeah I, I do think going the route of veteran
tight end, at least in some capacity, makes a lot of sense for the Colts this year. Like it
maybe doesn't have to be a guy like Hunter Henry, even though I do think that'd be a good fit. Now,
Hunter Henry did play for Shane Steichen years ago as well with the Chargers. And obviously,
Henry was one of the focal points of that passing game. He got a lot of catches in Steichen's
offense. So I do think
that's a good fit from that standpoint. But, you know, again, when I look at tight end, it's kind
of tough because you can't count on Brock Bowers being there at 15. You really can't. So you can't
just say, oh, we'll improve our tight end room because Brock Bowers will be there at 15 when
you can't even say it's going to be likely that he'll be there. But also this is not a good tight
end free agent class. But also you don't want to go into next year saying it's going to be likely that he'll be there. But also this is not a good tight end free agent class,
but also you don't want to go into next year saying we're going to run it
back with all these same tight ends because it just wasn't as effective as
you need it to be last year.
So there's a lot of like,
you know,
when it comes to tight end room and again,
you don't want to rely too much on Jelani Woods being the savior that fixes
it all.
So I think it's a really interesting thing.
I think when it comes to tight end whatever they do there I think will be the right or wrong
I don't know like I don't know which way to play with this so I said it's a mystery I legit don't
know what I think about that right whatever right like you added just a blocking tight end do you
add just a veteran who knows how to get open but that would kind of eat up Will Mallory snaps who
look like he was coming on late last season uh do you hope on jelani woods do you wait for brock bowers and
if bowers is gone you take jatavian sanders around too like there are a lot of ways to go about it
so i wouldn't rule out like a hunter henry type signing or a gerald everett type signing or
or like those types because i could see any really any real direction you go with tight end, I could kind of understand it.
It doesn't have to be some massive signing,
but it also doesn't need to be like anything.
And you just hope and pray that these other tight ends can work out.
And if they don't, then you made another mistake.
It's a really interesting position.
I do agree with you.
It's hard to give proper analysis on it,
because I don't know if there's a complete right direction here.
We might have to leave this to our comment section, Jake. Obviously, our comment section here,
they know more than we do. So you guys jump in there and tell us all you know about tight end.
Do you think the Colts need to go out and get one of these mediocre free agents? They need to move
all the way up for Brock Bowers. What do you think the Colts need to do to fix tight end? Because
I don't see an easy solution out there for it. No, no. And there's some interesting
things for offensive line as well, but nothing that really makes me tempted to disrupt the
cohesion they have with the top five right now. Was there anything else offensively on your radar?
No, I mean, backup quarterback, you know, someone like Tyrod Taylor, I think makes a lot of sense for the, I think we're all in on that.
Like, I think everyone, like,
there's still probably a caboose of the Gardner train, but I think,
I think the Tyrod train is really, really heavy right now.
Look, I'm a VT guy. I love me some Virginia tech football.
Tyrod Taylor was my savior as a kid. So yeah, Tyrod Taylor, man,
I'd love him here in India.
I would race out of training camp this year if Tyrod Taylor gets signed. But yeah, no, I think Tyrod makes a lot
of sense. Gardner, I think still makes some sense too to bring back. But outside of that, I don't
think the Colts are going to be super aggressive in free agency on offense. I think a lot of their
signings will come on defense, which we're going to talk about here in a second. We're going to
look at some defensive players the Colts could target in free agency next week.
Passion, drive, and patience.

exclusions apply ebay guaranteed fit only available to us customers all right jake we're diving into
big defensive free agents that we think the colts could go after now if you guys listened to
yesterday's show i talked about the the colts pursuant of a safety offseason, how they're going to go after a safety in some capacity.
I don't know if it's going to be the big name guys we're going to list here, but I do think they're going to bring in some outside veteran strong safety to pair it with Nick Cross next season.
So you guys can go listen to yesterday's show.
But Jake, you have some other big free agents here.
I think one here is really interesting that you put Christian Wilkins on here from the Dolphins, who wasn't franchise tagged by the Dolphins.
Big defensive tackle, fantastic player.
I think I saw some other people listing the Colts as a good potential fit for Wilkins
as well.
I would be really intrigued by that because I think Wilkins is great.
But spending like 40 something million dollars a year on defensive tackles kind of scares
me a little bit.
It does.
And for me, it comes with the caveat of you decide to move on from Grover
and get a couple years younger.
You don't get Wilkins and Grover.
It's an either or.
Grover's 30.
Wilkins is 28.
He's got a little more juice.
But as we know, big Grover fans here.
So this is a hypothetical.
But yeah, that's a lot of money.
But at the same time, a lot of these teams that get deep in the postseason or even win
the Super Bowl, their defensive lines are bonkers.
And I think that would create a bonkers situation.
Because again, that's a team that had 51 sacks last year and you're adding a really really good you know a really really good interior player in his prime
but overall this defensive free agent class is nice like you look at edge you got daniel hunter
who for the love of god just give him a multi-year deal because the guy answers the bell all the time
he's an elite pass rusher still rolling strong jonathan grenard who i think both of us were for the love of God, just give him a multi-year deal because the guy answers the bell all the time.
He's an elite pass rusher, still rolling strong.
Jonathan Grenard, who I think both of us were big fans of his coming into the league,
was the absolute heartbeat of the Texans defensive line last year, like 12 and a half sacks.
Bryce Huff, who I'm going to take huge credit for being in love with him
coming into the draft that year.
I was big Bryce Huff and O'Shane Zeminis guy.
Just Bryce Huff.
You don't mention O'Shane now.
Well, no, see, you don't just mention your victories.
You got to mention the guys who got a raw deal as well.
Big O'Shane guy.
And then Chase Young, very interesting.
Only 25 was a top pick, but all that keeps playing in my head is that clip of him totally loafing on a play,
I think an NFC championship game or something where there was a time it was bad.
But again, when he was with the commanders, he was playing with his hair on fire.
Like he looked totally back from his injuries.
You look in the secondary as well.
Kendall Fuller has probably been one of the most popular names that we've been throwing out.
Chauncey Gardner Johnson, probably my second ever favorite safety to scout coming out.
Xavier McKinney and Cam Curl.
So there's a lot of really good names out there defensively for the Colts.
And this is where I could really see them going shopping.
Yeah, I think it's interesting, though.
You put a lot of edge players on here, and I think maybe I'm in the minority
when it comes to the Colts need to acquire an edge rusher
because I look at their edge rush last year,
and look, I'm not going to say it was the greatest pass rush I've ever seen
or anything like that.
I'm not going to say they were top five in the league last year,
maybe even top ten, but I thought what we saw out of the edge rushers
was really good football last season. If Quiddy Paye is your worst of your like prime rotation guys and he's
an eight sack guy who is your base end who's doing a lot of contain rushes I'm feeling pretty good
at edge I'm more concerned about the secondary the secondary is terrifying to me and I think
that's really where the Colts need to sure some things up so when I look at guys like Daniil
Hunter Jonathan Grenard I'm just not sure what you would do.
Like, obviously, you would start those type of guys.
But what would you do with all these mouths to feed?
And also, you have good players on your roster already.
I think the only edge rusher I'd really look at, and I want to get your thoughts on this because it's probably a guy that you really liked as well coming out.
And we're just going back to old Jake draft takes here.
But Josh Uche is going to hit for the Patriots.
Yeah.
Very, very good speed rusher.
You can maybe play him a little bit of Sam in the early downs.
I know he didn't really do too much of that in the NFL,
but if you just want to get him on the field,
but if you're going to give him like, you know,
a couple million a year to come in and be your third down package guy
alongside, you know, Dio, Quitty, Abukam, and DeForest,
or however you want to do it.
You can just be really creative with it.
I think that makes sense because what the Colts don't have right now is a bendy speed
rusher.
They have a lot of power guys, a lot of, you know, finesse guys who kind of use finesse
off their power, but they don't have that pure bendy speed guy.
So like, if you want to add anything to this room,
grab a pure pass rusher and Uche who never has to play on rundowns can come out there for 20 snaps a game and just bend around the corner and force
quarterbacks to step up.
I think that's the edge rusher I'd look at.
I don't think I'd look at these other guys that are going to be commanding,
you know,
20 million a year.
Uche,
if you can get them for like six,
seven,
eight or whatever it's going to be,
I think that one's more cost effective and just better for your defense overall
yeah and I do want to say I I'm really not dissatisfied with the current edge group I
think coverage will help them a lot but these guys are available and offer an upgrade in some
scenarios and you probably don't wind up with that many mouths to feed because if you add one
of these guys you're probably trading someone but, it's interesting to think about. I think our
comment section is going to be awesome because the people who are pro-bargain Ben Ballard are
going to be on your side. And then we always have a contingent that is arguing, pleading with Ballard
to spend money. So that'll be really fun. But no, I think these guys are really interesting.
Secondary-wise, though, like I mentioned,
Kendall Fuller and Chauncey Gardner-Johnson,
veterans that can play in multiple spots.
And shockingly, Gardner-Johnson's still only 26.
I don't know about that.
I don't know about that.
Isn't that surprising?
I don't know about that. There i don't know about that there's
no he's i think there's a reason he's on a new team every year though you know what i mean like
his there's like he always has like a strong support system of people that absolutely love
him but like no one seems to want to give the guy big deals uh yeah but even looking at you know i
know you talked about some safeties yesterday as well,
but Xavier McKinney and Cam Curl, both of them are only 25.
Yeah, I think those would be massive moves to acquire either of those guys in free agency. And
if they don't do the steed type deal, spending your money on one of those guys would be a massive
upgrade to your defense. But one thing I want to ask you before we got out of here, Jake,
is, you know, I know a lot of people like to do the cost effective analysis of potential moves. So a guy like Snead, you would get for maybe a third and a fifth,
let's say a third and a fifth, you get him, but you're paying him like 20 million a year,
where Kendall Fuller, you don't have to give up anything and you can get him for like 14 million
a year. I don't think anyone is, is denying that Snead is a better corner than Kendall Fuller. I
mean, he's coming from one of the top defenses in football.
Fuller is coming from by far and away the worst defense in football.
So where would your head be with that?
Would you make the bigger move for Snead and pay him more
and take the bigger risk with him?
Or would you just say, okay, let's just give like a one or two year deal
to Kendall Fuller and keep our picks.
And, you know, we like our draft picks like old Ballard,
like he always likes to say.
I would go with Fuller. And, you know, we like our draft picks like like old Ballard, like we like he always likes to say.
I would go with Fuller.
I would be more for the modest move because, number one, I'm like Ballard.
I want them picks, especially I want picks like in the first four rounds.
Yeah.
But I also I'm also very pro.
Develop the younger guys, and I also want there to be an avenue for the Colts to take a Cooper to Jean Terry and Arnold Quinnian Mitchell. I want that possibility to still be there in the
first round. Um, just cause I think that's better for them long-term. And I think the Colts would
be a little more hesitant to do that if they just spent a second or a third and a conditional fourth or something on a starting
outside corner i want one of those guys to be a high likelihood for the colts in the first round
because i mean we we do want you know the the we want the explosive receiver as well but i think
we're both very much in the camp of explosive offensive player or really good corner or db in general uh so i definitely would be more
on on the fuller train there because again he's 29 you're not giving him any more than a two-year
deal he could play inside or out if kenny more gets hurt you have immediately his replacement
right there someone who is capable of doing it at just the same level, that's definitely where I would go. And I'm sure probably the same for you.
Actually, I don't know.
I think I, look, if it's a third and a fifth for Snead,
I think I'd go with Snead.
That's a great deal.
It is.
Like I would be okay with either of those scenarios,
but just me personally, I would say.
All right.
All right.
We're going to set this one up.
We're going to set up a lot of questions
for you guys in the comments.
Tell us what you think there.
Kendall Fuller at like 15 million, 14, 15 million a year for like one or two years or
a third and some change and $20 million a year for luxurious need in the comments.
Let us know there.
I want the bigger playmaker because I think this defense needs it, but I like Kendall
Fuller is a VT guy.
I have to say I love VT guys, so I'm all for it.
But let us know in the
comment section what you think before we get out of here today though guys i know we didn't talk
much about prospects but the indie draft guides pre-orders are now open for 8.99 with code

And you guys, when the draft guide drops in early April,
you can tell me all about how many times I called Chris Ballard crazy
in some of these things.
I think I called him crazy multiple times in some of my write-ups.
So you guys can joke around with me and let me know how many times
I called him that.
