Huddle.com. I'm your resident credentialed media member.
Been there at camp every day.
Hopefully been giving you guys the content you want.
And Zach is our resident film nerd slash expert slash film crusher.
He's been churning out the good stuff as well, especially on position battles.
It's really good to kind of see it from that bird's eye view.
But today we decided to take your guys questions
again, cause it's been a minute and we're over halfway through camp and we want to know what,
we want to know what you guys would like to hear and a lot of common themes here.
So we're going to designate a whole segment towards Justin Simmons today.
We're also going to kind of look at, uh, roster battles and roster cuts and just
essentially roster construction.
You guys had a lot of questions about that and then we'll polish it off with some things
that are more expectation based for the season.
Uh, but first, a lot of you guys asked about Justin Simmons.
Uh, we've got one here from, uh, at Matt underscore Oh four, our boy Kenan, uh, at
go Colts 181205.
A lot of you guys wanted to know about Justin Simmons.
So let's just, this has really heated up just like in the last several days,
especially when Quandre Diggs signed on with the Titans, right?
So after that, everyone was like, great.
One of the two big names we wanted is safety is off the board.
It's all Justin Simmons or nothing.
And then Benjamin Albright, who is a Broncos insider, very plugged in, gives very accurate information.
Had a tweet saying that he thinks Simmons could sign somewhere this week and it could be in the AFC South, Zach.
So to give some context to this, why don't you paint the whole AFC South safety picture
and then why it makes sense or not, or what you think could happen with the Colts and Simmons?
Yeah. So one thing I will say before we dive into all this is you have to obviously take
off season rumors with a grain of salt. We've been burned by that in the past, not just us
on this show, but like just in general,
I see how the craze goes with,
you know,
we had luxurious need earlier this off season.
We had the whole Jonathan Taylor being traded seven different times last
off season.
We've had a quite,
quite a fun time with the off season,
Twitter reports and rumors when it comes to the Indianapolis Colts last
couple of years.
So take it all with a grain of salt.
Obviously nothing is a done deal or even super implied or anything here.
But if we are to believe the Benjamin Albright report, which, you know, again, pretty credible
as it comes when it comes to his reports there on social media and stuff.
Yeah, when you look at the ASC South, I mean, the Titans, they've just signed two veterans
off the market, Quandre Diggs and Jamal Adams.
Now, Jamal Adams doesn't really move the needle too much in terms of like you're not making
any other moves but they have established guys there in that room so you'd assume it's not going
to be them you look at the jacksville jaguars they just made a signing today for adrian amos
they also have andrew wingard who's been dealing with an injury but you know has been a guy there
for a couple years and then andre cisco who's been dealing with an injury, but, you know, has been a guy there for a couple of years.
And then Andre Sisco, who's their starting free safety.
So you're assuming it's not them either.
So then it would come down to the Texans and the Colts.
And the Texans have a pretty good safety room.
Like, it's not perfect. Like, it could certainly use a Justin Simmons.
But they have, I think, what was it, Jimmy Ward starting at one of the safety spots.
They have Jalen Petrie and a couple other veterans back there. It's a pretty solid, you know, safety room. So to me,
I mean, look, logically, we know that it comes down to the Colts in terms of what team in the
NFL needs him the most. It's about whether the Colts actually make that move. Because again,
with the Colts, you look at the safety group we're not even talking
about you know just the starters being being a question mark we're looking at the depth players
being a question mark we have one one and a half depending on what your your comfort level is with
Nick Cross we have one guy we fully trust and then Nick Cross whatever whatever we feel about him and
then we don't have anyone else in this room that we really feel confident enough to throw out there on Sundays as a starting safety.
So yeah, it's not a great room.
And if you sign someone like a Justin Simmons and keep Julian Blackman at
strong safety and have Nick Cross's safety three, that's feeling pretty good.
Now, again, it takes two to tango.
The Colts are not really known for making veteran free agent signings,
so I can't guarantee
anything here but logically it makes the most sense it's something that has made the most sense
since day one of free agency when Justin Simmons was what released by the Broncos I believe before
free agency started it makes sense right now it's made sense you know for the last couple weeks too
like this move has always made the most sense for the Colts it's just about will it cross the finish line will it get done it should there's no reason why the Colts shouldn't do this but
we'll see we'll see Jake I don't know like if we're believing the Albright report though if
you're looking at the other teams in the NFC South the Colts are the one that make the most
sense especially with their cap room they have too so we'll just have to see if it actually
happens anytime this week or next week or, or whenever they're. Yeah. And so my understanding is like, I'm not going to say
anything is like eminent or anything like that. My understanding is just that the Colts are
rightfully, you should consider them in the mix, uh, essentially just kind of some background.
Uh, I can't really, I'm not going to get into a whole bunch of stuff. It's not like I know intimate knowledge of the situation. But what I can use with that and then
applying it to the Colts is the Colts are always kind of against themselves when it comes to the
price tag they're willing to go to. Now, Quandre Diggs signing for a base of 3 million and only
up to five with incentives makes me think that a market for Simmons isn't going to be huge.
Like, I don't know, maybe $8 million to $10 million.
I would say $10 million max.
With incentives that can maybe get it up to $14 million or $15 million or something like that.
Yeah, the escalators.
But yeah, I don't think it's going to be some enormous deal.
And there aren't a lot of teams out there with the cap space where it makes sense to spend that much money on someone like Simmons other than the Colts. Again, how stubborn are the Col upfront cash, which, you know, you gotta, you gotta bring the
money to the table. Like there's, there's a lot of stuff that goes into it, but I mean, the Colts do
make arguably the most sense in the league to get a guy like Simmons. And, you know, just yesterday,
Gus Bradley, when asked about, you know, are, are, as anyone separating, he's, he basically said,
they're not close to making a decision on that. Now we're a month
away from the start of the season. The first preseason game is this week. You've had one guy,
Nick Cross, who has been the primary first team. I'm not going to say free safety or strong safety
because they're starting to mix things in now. The primary other safety not named Julian Blackman
since OTAs. You've tried Rodney Thomas back in
there as well. Rodney Harrison has gotten some reps. You don't know who your safety is, so you
don't have one. That's just the truth. The one safety you are comfortable with, Julian Blackman
has been an absolute star in camp, and we've seen where he can be a big difference maker during the season but again he has not played a full season in the nfl and he has dealt with health issues and you
know that which is why you didn't give him a very lucrative contract so what are we doing yeah that
like that's the point i'm getting to is like there there is no downside to this ballard has said before we don't want to do a
thing where we give a big contract to an outside free agent who you have to the rest of the locker
room has to look and see like this guy doesn't even work hard like you gave all this money this
guy never been a concern with justin simmons he's a leader he is like a model player he's a good part
of the locker room the only reason he's not on the broncos like a model player. He's a good part of the locker room. The only reason
he's not on the Broncos anymore is because they couldn't afford him anymore. So like you need the
position. He's the best one out there. He's still only like 30, still very productive. You saw last
year with the Falcons, how a move like Jesse Bates can really like electrify your defense.
Bates had a big game against the Colts. Like there is zero downside to
this. It just feels like a stubborn monetary thing. And I don't, I like, they still might
make this move. Like it could, something could happen like while we're talking right now and
I'll have to eat my words. It's just like, why has it taken this long? Yeah. The last words I'll say
real quick about this. Cause again, we've talked this ad nauseum all season just to death, basically, is I think for Justin Simmons, the Colts make a ton of sense.
Maybe not monetarily this year, because again, we have a state income tax in Indiana compared to some other teams in the AFC South.
And I know that always hinders it.
And the Colts aren't the most, you know, throw money at everybody type thing.
But when we're looking at schematically here, the Colts run more single high defense than just about any other team in
football.
We've seen Rodney Thomas through two years in his NFL career,
get a lot of meatballs thrown up to him at deep safety.
I mean,
of his six interceptions,
what five of them that Ronnie Thomas has come down with have been just
lollipops thrown up in the air that he's been able to easily catch.
So if you're Justin Simmons,
you come to Indy for one year,
you get to play a lot of single
high free safety, and you'll catch a couple of really easy interceptions down the field.
And then you'll hit the market again next year at what, 30, 31 years old and have like
a good five, six interception season, whatever it's going to be.
You know, like I think it's a win-win for both sides here.
We just got to ultimately get across that finish line but hopefully this gets done uh we'll see i don't want to go into the season with cross and blackman just
because like i think those two would be fine but if an injury happens to one of those guys then
it's obviously not fine whatsoever in that secondary uh so we will certainly have to see
with what the colts do at least sign some veteran backup or something at this point. Like I'm asking for any kind of signing at safety, but again,
I think we've talked this topic to death, Jake.
I think it's time to move on to more roster stuff and preseason stuff with
the rest of the show.
Yep. So we'll go ahead, you know, roster construction, surprise,
roster cuts, things like that.
We'll go ahead and address that stuff here in a moment.
I love sports, you guys.
I love them so much that I never want them to stop.
But as the playoffs wind down, we get fewer games.
Obviously, you know, you got baseball and we're lucky enough to have the Olympics, you know, once in every four years.
But, you know, basketball is over.
The WNBA had a long break.
Hockey's over.
But FanDuel, it never stops over there.
They keep the sports going whenever I want.
All I got to do is open up the app and dream up any bet when I'm in the mood.

roster decision making, and that's obviously what this offseason is about. So outside of Anthony
Richardson talk, which we know drives most of our shows and stuff here, the other talk really is how
the Colts are going to shape this roster in terms of cutdowns, in terms of position battles, you know,
what kind of decisions are they making at key spots?
And we got a good question here from Chris Jones on Twitter,
Chris Joe 10992287.
A lot of numbers there at the end.
He asked, what are the final position battles that we're really looking at?
So we can say like cornerback two is pretty solidified.
Like Jalen Jones is going to be the other outside starter at corner what are some positions though that you think have not been
solidified yet like which ones are we still watching going into preseason game one and then
maybe even further than that the rest of the offseason yeah so some of them that I think are
going to be kind of final decisions um you look at tight end I think there's some some tough you know there's to be some tough decisions they have to make there.
Of course, Will Mallory is hurt right now with the hamstring,
and then Jelani Woods is still kind of trying to work his way up, get out of his own way a little bit.
I mean, I don't want to talk down on him too much.
He's ascending.
He just has to take advantage of the opportunities.
Blake Freeland versus Matt Gonsalves is definitely one to keep an eye on. Same with Danny Pinter and Tanner Bortolini.
With Wesley French being injured, we don't, you know, we got to wait and see how long that's
going to take, but that kind of opens things up for Bortolini and Pinter. Some of these just kind
of involve, you know, guys needing to come back from injury.
Obviously like Rayquan Davis makes things interesting,
things interesting for like Taven,
Brian and Adetomi.
Like you said,
corner settled,
obviously safety,
which we just talked about quite a bit.
That one,
if they don't add a veteran,
we won't really know what they want to do.
Those are kind of the main ones that I think are probably going to go until the final whistle
yeah no i completely agree i don't really have much to add there i mean rb2 feels pretty
solidified too so if we want to mention that like trey sermon appears to be the next bell cow
evan hole a lot of pass catching work so yeah i think i think a lot of the battles are taking
shape just not completely solidified i think a lot of the battles are taking shape, just not completely solidified. I think a lot of the starting positions are pretty locked in right now.
It's just mostly the depth ones there.
But we got a couple people asking this next question here,
which I think is one of the more intriguing ones.
And who are some of the surprise roster cuts we got at RohanM99?
And then someone in our thing here, DSGGoodbar, also asked that.
What are some surprise roster cuts?
And Jake, you and I actually had the same list of about two or three players. So who are those guys
that we're looking at as surprise roster cuts? Yeah, so at tight end, I would say just, again,
a numbers game and there being a lot of snaps that have to go around. I could see Jelani Woods
or Will Mallory definitely being surprise cuts. I mean see Jelani Woods or Will Mallory definitely being surprise cuts.
I mean, Jelani is pretty consistently
getting reps behind the rest of the group.
Will Mallory has not been able to prove
that he can stay healthy.
So that's one.
Rodney Thomas is one because he's kind of,
you know, free safety is his gig.
But they talk a lot about how Nick Cross
can play free, strong, or nickel.
We know Julian Blackman can do everything.
I mean, Trevor Denbo is like a special teams ace,
and he's perhaps their top personal protector on the punt team.
So when it comes to safety numbers, like it's more about what all can you do.
Those are a few guys that I,
it wouldn't be super surprising. You look at Raekwon Davis as well, not as a cut, but as a guy
who he's out with a high blood pressure right now on the non-football illness list, again, not a cut,
but he could go into the season remaining on the inactive non-football illness list, which will
cost him however many games at the beginning, like six, I think. So those are a few I would take a look at. Yeah. Raekwon Davis
was one of the first guys that popped out to me just because we've seen the Colts do this in the
past where, look, we know that they don't sign many players, but then we get excited about the
one or two signings they do make. And then like, if the guy doesn't practice all off season, it's
hard to make the roster. I think who was notre dame defensive tackle they signed years ago that we all got
excited about and then he barely practiced the offseason and got cut and he had like a two-year
deal as well i think it was sheldon sheldon day sheldon day yep yeah he's also another uh warren
central guy the colts love warren central guys and notre dame guys yeah yeah so we've seen this
in the past i'm not saying rayquan davis is not going to make the roster, but we haven't seen him play. And we know that the Colts, for whatever
reason, love Taven Bryan. I don't, but I know that they love Taven Bryan. So it's going to be hard
for Raekwon Davis to beat out Taven Bryan for that backup one tech spot if he's not on the field so please come back on the field
raekwon davis that's all i ask right there please please uh we have another question here uh have
any dark horse candidates emerged in camp that you have that you give a legit chance of making
the team preferably a player not mentioned before now this is from uh old colts fan on twitter it's
gonna be hard to find someone that we haven't mentioned before.
So it's okay if we have mentioned them before, Jake.
I know you have a couple that you've maybe mentioned in passing.
But who do you think are some dark horse guys where, you know,
they could be like the Ashton Doolin types,
where when Doolin was an undrafted free agent,
he wasn't really super well-known.
Like I know some of the Dynasty football guys knew him,
but he made the roster stuck for most of the year
and became a guy that's like a mainstay on the roster.
Do you think we have any of those bottom of the roster guys this year?
Yeah, so obviously dark horse meaning unlikely but still possible
and to me unsurprising.
I would put DJ Montgomery in that conversation at the bottom of the roster.
Now it's always going to be tough to beat out a guy like Ashton Doolin
but I mean Montgomery is very very involved um so that's any place special teams as well
um that is someone I would include in there um man maybe with Samson Ebicom going down you look
at a Jannard Avery or Isaiah Land uh that's a couple guys liam anderson at linebacker
of course liam and liam anderson but i need him to get back on the field he's been out right
right and then the last one i'll probably mention is amir speed at corner he has some catching up
to do as well uh because he missed like three practices too i think but uh he's a big-bodied
guy who saw snaps for them at the end of the season also.
So those are some guys who it's probably not super likely,
but if I saw their name on the final roster heading into week one,
I would get it.
Yeah, and Trevor Dembele you could throw in there.
I know that he's not like a super dark horse because we've seen
them both the last couple years.
Yeah, I don't want to say he's a lock,
but like if i'm projecting the
roster today he's on it like i expect him to be on the roster yeah yeah like he's not a dark horse
but he's the guy where when people are doing like trying to keep all the flashy names you don't
think of a denbo but it's like oh yeah like denbo makes the team because it's a special team so
yeah i think i think that one makes a lot of sense uh but guys that's's all we have for the roster cuts. We didn't get to every question,
but we do appreciate you guys throwing some in. But coming up, we're going to discuss a little
bit about the, just the overall season expectations for this team and some schematic stuff. You guys
always throw schematic stuff at me too. So we're going to talk about that here coming up in just a
second. This show is sponsored by BetterHelp.
You guys, what are your self-care non-negotiables?
Maybe you never skip leg day or therapy day.
I know Zach mentioned the other day, he makes sure he makes time for his hobbies each day.
I mean, our schedules get packed with kids' activities, work projects.
It's really easy to kind of put yourself on the back
burner or whatever you like to do back there. But even when we know what makes us happy, it's hard
to make time for it. But when you feel like you have no time for yourself, non-negotiables like
therapy, especially are more important than ever. Honestly, this is one of my biggest areas for improvement because I like work is constantly my thing.
Like that's what I feel each vacant moment with.
You know, sometimes I decide maybe I should go to sleep at night.
But yeah, I don't make a lot of time for things that aren't work or family related.

Okie doke. So let's talk about Colts and expectations. That's really the theme you
guys threw at us on this segment. So I think, you know, externally, nationally,
the Colts are kind of flying under the radar um you know their
players aren't very highly heralded you know the the team itself isn't being talked about as much
as like houston obviously i've heard people talk about jacksonville a lot um so we're going to talk
about expectations and like what we think of certain areas and really the team in general going into the 24 season uh so this first one comes from at rocket 4457 talk me into the defense counting on
deforest buckner to remain ageless feels like our best shot at being average um so if i'm talking
you into the defense i'll look at each level so So the defensive line, this has got to be, even without Samson
Ebucom, it's probably the deepest it's been in the Chris Ballard era still. It's a group that's
coming off of an Indy era 51 sack record. If you look at the linebackers, the last two years,
they've had to kind of figure out this Shaq Leonard conundrum. How much do we play him?
Is he here?
Is he healthy?
What can we do?
When is he going to look like himself?
They don't have that this year.
They know it's EJ speed who they absolutely love and they know it's Zaire
Franklin.
So they don't have to figure that out.
And then at corner,
they went young,
which means these guys should still be getting better.
At safety, you
have an absolute stud in Julian Blackman. And maybe if Nick Cross makes it, he gets better and
he gets more comfortable. And the communication is all there with the rest of the secondary.
Or they sign a Justin Simmons, and then you can feel a lot better about it. What about you, Zach?
Yeah, my simple sell for the Colts defense this year is I think the run defense can be pretty good.
It just really comes down to who's going to stay healthy, obviously, up front. But if everyone stays healthy, I think the run defense is going to be mostly pretty solid this year.
And if they can hold teams to limited production on the ground on the early downs,
they can force more of those third and longs and third and, you know,
third and nine, third and tens and that.
And then they have this deepest pass rush that they've had in a long time.
Maybe it's not as deep as what it could have been because I become is out for
the year now, but I do think this is going to be a good pass rush for the Colts.
And if they can get into more third and nines, third and tens,
and just be consistent with their tackling, obviously on the short throws that they do force, I think they can get off
the field on third down much more effectively than they did last year.
So, you know, I think it's right to have an expectation of this defense being better than
they were last year.
I don't know how much better, but I think I can sell you on them being like an average
defense simply because their run defense is going to be good and their pass rush should be effective enough to force shorter throws and get a couple more
sacks and pressures on pivotal third downs so yeah i think they're going to be a fine team in
terms of forcing those third downs it's just getting off the field with your coverage and
how effective that coverage can be will be the the difference between being a fringe top 10 defense
a average defense or a bad defense.
That's really what it's going to come down to.
But I think you have a good base with having a solid run defense
like they're going to have and having a pretty good defensive line
that can rush the passer with three or four guys.
Yeah, I think at minimum you can lean into that run defense.
And if you think about it, they're going to be facing a lot of young quarterbacks.
And so those teams are probably going to want to lean on the run game.
So, you know, silver lining there.
This next one's right up your alley and it's from our boy Felipe.
So, you know, he's going right at you.
How do you expect the play calling to change or evolve with what Anthony Richardson showed last year
and what we're seeing in camp just as heavy on the pistol calls and RPOs
or maybe an increase in play action and drop backs? I don't think we'll see like a crazy
increase in like play actions, but I do think we're going to see, you know, a good amount of
RPOs, good amount of what we saw a little bit early in last season in terms of just tailoring
that offense to fit more Richardson's needs. You know, we even saw in those first couple games, you know,
using more of the quarterback run game,
using more of just the threat of his legs to, you know,
get the defense into certain looks to open up more passes.
And I think one thing that we can really look at that we're going to see a big
improvement on this year is the explosive passing game.
Richardson didn't really get to use
his big arm too much last season because they were trying to ease him into the system.
And then obviously we saw when Gardner Minshew came in, there wasn't much of an explosive passing
game. They weren't this high octane, throw the ball down the field type offense. But now we're
seeing in training camp this year, Richardson is ripping the ball down the field every day in
practice, maybe taking a little bit too long to stay on those deep routes,
but we want to be explosive football in Indianapolis this year.
So yes, we're going to have the RPOs.
We're going to have the QB runs.
We're going to have the threat of the QB runs
to dictate what the defense is doing,
but I think we're going to have more explosive passing attempts this year
and hopefully more explosive passing conversions as well.
So look, that Rams game, that second half,
we saw four verts spammed in the entire second half.
That could be more of a constant this year.
Obviously you have to face more cover four
and cover two type defenses to do that stuff.
But look, we could see more four verts type style stuff
here from Shane Steichen,
because I do think a big emphasis on the Colts
this off season has been,
we want to throw the ball down the football field.
We want to get the ball vertical.
They wanted to trade up for a Mal neighbors or a Roma dunes in the draft
they got an A.D. Mitchell they got an Anthony Gould they want to throw the football deep this
year they were tired of what they saw with Minshew last year not throwing the ball deep
they want to get the ball vertically down the field they even signed a backup quarterback
who no matter what will only throw the ball deep if he ever has to play so yeah I think we're going
to see a much more explosive passing game from the Colts this year.
It might not be the most efficient, but I think we're going to see a fairly explosive attempt from this Colts offense this year.
I do too, both in like deliberately trying to be more explosive, but also the off script stuff.
Just the things that Anthony can do, like he, of course, can run the ball just about as well as any other quarterback in the league, we think.
We only have that small sample size.
But just watching him in practice, he will keep his eyes down.
If he's running to the outside and stretching the pocket and everything,
he's keeping his eyes on the passing lanes for as long as possible until he has to take off or go out of bounds.
And, you know,
him going out of bounds that can suck up some of the attention from the
secondary, leaving an Alec Pierce wide open or something like a lot of the
off script stuff that maybe wasn't intended to be deep shots.
I think there will be more organic explosives involved in the offense this
year, but also of course, like they're trying to get more explosive too.
So just all around, the ingredients are there for them to be a more vertical offense.
And it doesn't have to be a bunch of 30, 40 yard bombs, but like the 18 yard stuff over
the middle, like just even those simple things, I think that will become more routine.
Yeah, yeah, for sure.
One more question I did want to hit on before we get out of here, because I know we're running
short on time.
But Steven asked us at Steven's zp2 asked us which tight end
do you think will lead the team at snaps this year i want to be pretty firm in saying i think it's
going to be drew ogletree this year i think from everything you've told me about training camp from
the the steps he made as a blocker last year and just how important it is to have a tight end that can play consistently with his blocking ability.
I think Drew Ogletree is going to be the tight end that gets the most snaps.
Now, I don't think it's going to be by a wide margin.
Like, I don't think it's going to be like a 600 or 700 snap season from him.
But, you know, like a 500, 550-ish type season from him.
I do think Ogletree leads the team in snaps from tight end fairly comfortably by the end of this season. I would tend to agree, but I'll just make the
quick argument for Kyle and Granson being like the only tight end they've been able to rely on
consistently to do a little bit of everything the last couple of years. Granson stays pretty
healthy and he can do a lot of things. So I wouldn't be surprised if he winds up leading them in snaps again,
but if they have it their way, I think probably Ogletree.
Yeah. Yeah. I see it for sure. All right, guys, that's all we have for today.
