Jelani Woods and Trey Sermon are the Colts' biggest winners of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Let's get to it.
You are Locked On Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast.
Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
Thank you all for tuning in and making us your first listen of the day.
This is your daily podcast covering your Indianapolis Colts, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
Hello, everyone. My name is Zach Hicks.
You guys can find my film work over at HorseshoeHuddle.com.
I'm your favorite film nerd over there.
And here I am the co-host of the Locked On Colts podcast, which you guys know
and love. My co-host Jake Arthur is still out this week. He is on vacation. We're loving that for him.
So I'm holding down the fort yet again. Today we're going to be continuing our draft talk,
but kind of taking it from a different angle today. We're going to kick off today's show
by talking all about the Colts in-house winners of the 2024 NFL Draft. And then we're going to really discuss this undrafted free agent class in detail, talk about every player of the Colts in-house winners of the 2024 NFL draft.
And then we're going to really discuss this undrafted free agent class in detail,
talk about every player the Colts announced that they had signed.
Only seven players this year, so nothing too crazy.
And then we're going to go to the rookie numbers release.
We're not going to take too much time on that, obviously.
But look, I know some of you guys are really big into the number aesthetics, so we do have to talk a little bit, at least,
about those number aesthetics for your Indianapolis Colts rookies this upcoming season.
But let's kick off today's show by talking about the Colts in-house biggest winners from this past draft class.
You know, there was a lot of talk in the pre-draft cycle about different ways the Colts could have gone in this upcoming draft or this past draft. But they ended up going with a pass rusher in round one,
pass catcher in a wide receiver in round two.
And then they really went after the offensive line depth in the next two rounds there.
So I think one of the biggest winners when you look at just that group of players
they took right there at the beginning of the draft is Jelani Woods
and just the rest of the Colts tight end room.
There was a lot of
things linking the Colts to star tight end prospect Brock Bowers in this cycle. I know a lot of us,
including us here on this show, we're really pounding the table saying, you know what,
go get Brock Bowers. He's the perfect fit for this offense. He would really push this offense
over the top. And unfortunately he didn't fall to the Colts at pick 15. Now we're still happy
with layout to lots of you and AD 15. Now, we're still happy with
Leatu Latu and A.D. Mitchell. We can't complain whatsoever about those picks. But because Brock
Bowers just ended up falling only to 13 instead of 15, and he's not at Indianapolis Colt right now,
it really comes down to Jelani Woods this next season to hold down that top tight end role.
Obviously, there are other players that come into play, like Will Mallory had a great final stretch of last season and really fits that Shane Steichen archetype at the position.
Drew Ogletree had a good season as a run blocker.
Moelle Cox will always forever be on this team, I guess.
Like, he's always just going to be in it.
And Kylan Granson's the team's best separator at the position.
So they have a lot of capable players at tight end, maybe not any star players.
And that's where Jelani Woods really needs to take hold of that position this offseason.
He really needs to continue to build off of what he did as a rookie and really establish himself as that top guy.
He had 312 yards and three touchdowns as a rookie two years ago, missed all of last season due to an injury that he re-aggravated halfway through the season, again, which caused him to miss the entire year so Jelani Woods
I mean it's a big offseason for him it's even bigger now because the Colts didn't select the
tight end in this class heck the one tight end they did sign after the draft their undrafted
free agent tight end they're moving him to running back so it really is just Jelani Woods and the
guys that they went into camp with last year so it really comes down to Jelani Woods building off
of what he did as a
rookie, bouncing back from the injury that caused him to miss all of last season, and establishing
himself as that top tight end. But not having Brock Bowers in that room, or Ben Sinnott even
in day two, really helps him and establishes him as a winner going into this offseason because now
he has that chance to prove himself in the offense. Another offensive player I really want to highlight here is running back Trey Sermon.
So running back Trey Sermon was the Colts' third running back last season,
third or fourth running back, however you really want to see it there.
He only had like 150 yards rushing on the season,
so it really wasn't a ton of production that he got.
But 4.6 yards per carry as that third back who filled in for Zach Moss at times,
for Jonathan Taylor at times, looked good running the ball, but didn't really get that chance to
shine as a number two option in this offense. Now he's going into this offseason as the de facto
RB2 for this team. Now Evan Hull could push him, Tyler Goodson could push him, and some of these
undrafted guys that we like could push him a little bit, but the Colts not taking a running back in this draft kind of established,
you know, kind of set the runway for Trey Sermon to take that position and run with it this year.
I mean, the Colts RB2 position in the last couple of seasons has not been a small role in this
offense. It's been a pretty major point for this team. And you look at last year, Zach Moss had
nearly a thousand yards last year.
He had over 800 yards rushing, really established himself as a guy
because the starter went down.
And that RB2 role ended up being really vital.
I mean, you go back to the days of Naeem Hines and Jordan Wilkins.
Those guys got a lot of run as the RB2 or RB3 even in this Colts offense,
even if they're behind a player who's rushing for 1,000 yards
like Jonathan Taylor or Marlon Mack. So the Colts RB2 job is a pretty important one. It always has been
an important one, at least in my time covering the Colts since 2018. So Trey Sermon really has
a chance this offseason to establish himself as that guy. And look, if he can do what Zach
Moss did last year, even maybe take a little bit of a lesser degree, he can earn himself a nice little payday going into the next offseason.
So huge, huge winner was Trey Sermon.
He gets that chance to show that he can win an RB2 job and really solidify himself behind Jonathan Taylor with a key role in this offense.
So I think I think Trey Sermon has to be happy with the fact that the Colts didn't go after like a Tyrone Tracy or those type of guys on day three. And he gets to roll into camp as the veteran guy who has more experience
with Shane Steichen, who had a little bit of production last year too. Again, 4.6 yards per
carry last year. So Trey Sermon has really solidified himself, at least going into camp
as the Colts RB2 because they didn't spend a draft pick on a younger guy in this past class.
Going to the defense side of the ball though, I think the biggest winners on that side
have to be all the players in the secondary. All the returning players in the secondary,
from corner to safety, those players that are on the roster currently were massive winners from
this draft class because we all highlighted the Colts need to get another corner in here.
They need another safety in here. There's guys in the top 50 or the top 100 they could really target to really push the guys that are currently on the roster and maybe supplant them as starters.
When we look at the results, though, of this past draft for the Colts, the only defensive backs they took were one in late round five and one early round six.
And Mika Abraham in round six and Jalen Simpson there in round five.
And it looks like both those guys are going to be corners and, and, you know,
they could be nickel corners. It could be outside corners. We don't really know exactly what the
plan is for those guys. But I think when you're, when you're looking at players like Jalen Jones
and Daryl Baker, Jr. And Daniel Scott, obviously coming back off his injury from last year,
Rodney Thomas, I think it's a big one. These guys were massive winners from this draft class because they're not really getting a serious push. Don't get me wrong,
Mika Abraham and Jalen Simpson are good players. I'm excited for them. It's going to be fun to see
them in camp. And I think they can really push these guys a little bit, but it's not the same
push as a Quinion Mitchell would have been, or the same push as a veteran in free agency,
which is still an option. The Colts could still go that route, but it's not as much of a push as those options would
have been. So those players, as of right now, have a chance to really solidify themselves in camp,
maybe which, you know, a chance they wouldn't have had if a Quinion Mitchell type would have
been taken early in the draft. So Daryl Baker Jr. has a better chance now than what we would
have thought going into the draft. Jalen Jones looks Baker Jr. has a better chance now than what we would have thought going into the
draft. Jalen Jones looks like the de facto outside starter alongside Julius Brents. That's a huge
thing for him because again, going into the draft, maybe we didn't expect that. So Jalen Jones
really has a chance to solidify himself as the second outside starter. And then you got guys
like Daniel Scott and Ronnie Thomas, who maybe would have been on the roster bubble if the Colts added another safety in this draft class.
But because they didn't add that other safety, these two guys are probably feeling a little bit better than what they would have been going into that draft.
So Daniel Scott has a chance to come back from this injury and really solidify a role in this team.
And Ronnie Thomas, who kind of fell out of favor late in the season last year, has a chance to really re-earn that trust back of this defensive staff.
So we'll see what this entails for all these players going into the offseason.
Obviously, the Colts could still make more moves.
They could still grab a veteran running back on the market.
They could add another blocking tight end to the team.
They could certainly grab another safety or corner that's on the market.
Those markets are still looking pretty solid.
But as of right now, Trey Sermon, Jelani Woods, and the entire defensive backfield are the Colts' biggest
winners in-house from the NFL draft that just happened. But continuing our talk about this
Colts draft class, we're going to move past the draft and talk about the undrafted free agents.
The Colts, a few short years ago, had this massive long streak of undrafted free agents
making the roster,
making the opening day roster. Now they haven't really kept up with that as much in recent years,
but there are still some intriguing players in this undrafted free agency class that we have to
discuss. But first, when it comes to your financial future, you think you've done it all. You've

All right. Locked on Colts every day
as we are back with another
draft topic here. Now we're moving past the players that were selected in the Colts draft class and talking
about this undrafted free agency class.
We have discussed some of these players in kind of passing conversations on this show,
but we haven't really dove into like all these players individually.
So the Colts did sign seven undrafted free agents after the draft.
Only six of them matter because one of them's a kicker.
We don't talk about kickers on the show.
We are anti-kicker on this show.
But the other six guys that they did end up signing,
I am really impressed or really intrigued at least
by the versatility that these guys bring.
If you look at each one of these players,
I think only Dalton Tucker.
Yeah, only Dalton Tucker. Or Dalton Tucker and Keaton Slovis. Sorry only Dalton Tucker, yeah, only Dalton Tucker,
or Dalton Tucker and Keaton Slovis, sorry, Dalton Tucker and Keaton Slovis, the quarterback and
interior offensive lineman, are the only guys who played one position in college or are only listed
as one position going to the NFL. So getting into this list here, Jason Bean from Kansas,
he's a quarterback who was also listed as wide receiver for the Colts on their official undrafted free agency listing. He finished his college career with nearly 6,000 yards passing,
55 touchdowns and 26 interceptions. And that's combined at North Texas and Kansas,
1,342 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns as well on the ground. An absolute burner as a runner.
Really, really fun player in that Kansas offensive system
that just let him get to the exterior and run the ball a little bit.
He has a decent arm too.
Like it's not like he has an awful arm.
I do think he's a big time project
because he just never really put together at the college level.
I mean, he was switching time between Jalen Daniels
quite a bit these last couple of years.
But Jason being a very linear
player, but a very, very fast player in that straight line. I'm actually really intrigued
to see what the plan is with him because they do have, again, listed at quarterback slash wide
receiver. I'm really excited for Jason Bean. I've been a big fan of Jason Bean at the college level
the last couple of years. So when I saw the Colts signed him, I was pretty excited. That's just a
fun player. And I'm really intrigued to see what the Colts plan is for him.
Another undrafted free agent quarterback, this time listed as just a quarterback.
So again, we can't have so much fun with all these players.
But Keaton Slovis, quarterback from BYU this past year.
He also spent time at Pittsburgh and at USC.
He was actually the quarterback for Michael Pittman Jr.
for a time at USC. Slovis finished his college career with 11,689 yards passing and 80 touchdowns
with 39 interceptions. Now those numbers are pretty impressive for, I mean, again, he started
five years at college, so he started quite a few times, but those numbers are pretty impressive
until you kind of consider that 30 of those 80 passing touchdowns came in his monstrous breakout freshman campaign at USC.
I mean, he looked like he was going to be the next big thing in college football.
And then he was a steady decline at USC, a pretty, pretty forgetful season at Pittsburgh.
And then he bounced back a little bit this past year at BYU, but it still wasn't really what you expect.
But the Colts are taking a shot here on a guy who was a highly recruited player out of high school,
had a fantastic freshman year at 18.
And obviously there's something there with him.
There is something there.
It's about, like, is it salvageable at this point?
But the Colts are going to take a look at him here in training camp. I do think, you know, of all these undrafted free agents, he has the best chance at pushing Sam Ellinger and making himself a roster spot this offseason. So we'll see
what Slovis can do. If he can just put it together a little bit, he has the talent. So we'll see
exactly what he can do here. Another really fun player up next, Trent Penix from NC State. He was
a running back going into college, transitioned to tight end late in his college career,
and the Colts are moving him back to running back.
So like a 235-pound player who ran a 4.6, maybe does some fullback stuff for the Colts,
maybe just plays like legit traditional running back.
Finishes college career with 712 yards receiving and 11 touchdowns,
along with 41 carries for 240 yards and one touchdown on the ground.
Again, just a fun player, man.
Running back slash tight end.
Like, that's cool to me.
That's cool.
Reminds me of like Daryl Young a little bit,
that fullback for Washington years ago,
where he was listed as a fullback,
but he was more of a playmaker at the fullback position.
Like he wasn't like a lead blocker for Washington.
He was, again, more of a goal lineback
who would catch passes out of the backfield and do these really fun things. So really excited for him. He was, again, more of a goal linebacker who would catch passes out of the
backfield and do these really fun things. So really excited for him. He seems just fun. Again,
running back, tight end, really cool hybrid position player there. And the Colts moving
him back to running back again, maybe in some fullback type hybrid. That just is really
intriguing to me. It's really fun to me right there. Dalton Tucker, interior offensive lineman
from Marshall. The Colts had him in for a pre-draft visit. Clearly had a lot of interest in him, and he's going to
push guys like Gonsalves and Bortolini in camp. And who knows? Maybe he can earn himself that
ninth or 10th offensive line spot too in camp. Xavier White, running back slash wide receiver
from Texas Tech. Now the Colts listed him at wide receiver, but White began his college career
at the running back position.
He ran the ball 136 times for 754 yards and five touchdowns,
moved over to wide receiver for his final two seasons,
had over a thousand yards receiving total
in those final two seasons, along with six touchdowns.
Again, the versatility, the versatility is a blast,
a running back and wide receiver.
Love it, absolutely love it. Just really cool. Love seeing the versatility, the versatility is a blast, a running back and wide receiver. Love it.
Absolutely love it.
Just really cool.
Love seeing the versatility in undrafted free agents because they can just wear a lot of hats for your team.
And then our final one here, Craig Young, linebacker slash safety, linebacker slash
safety, began his college career at Ohio State as a linebacker, moved to more of a safety
like overhang type position there at Kansas his final season or his final two seasons, finished his college career with 124 tackles,
six sacks and three interceptions. But I think we know the theme of this undrafted class where,
look, it's not quantity. It's not a ton of guys coming in, but the couple of guys they do have
bringing in really cool projects that have a lot of experience doing different
things at the college level. Now, what are the Colts going to do with each of these guys? It's
just going to be fascinating to me. Like, are they going to keep them at their positions? They have
them listed at currently, are they going to move them and stick them at a different position? Do
they have, you know, plans for them in the, on the practice squad or something that they can just do
a lot of things for the scout team. I'm really intrigued by this undrafted free agent class. I don't think any of them make the 53-man
roster this year. Again, Slovis, I think, has the best chance, but I wouldn't say any of these guys
have a great chance of making the roster, but really, really cool, fun class. I just love seeing
multiple positions listed for each player and the experience that these guys all have at all these different spots. I mean, the Colts really went all in on players, again, that can
wear multiple hats for your team. And when you have a changing special teams unit coming this
next year with the new kickoff rules, when you have the need for players to do multiple things
for your team, it makes a lot of sense to take shots on these types of guys. Maybe they're not
the greatest testers. Maybe they're not all like, you know, super elite athletes, but again,
guys who can wear multiple hats for your team and can do a lot of things on
the scout team with practice squad.
And maybe they haven't reached their potential at their new position that
they're changing to.
So we'll see what these guys can do here for the Colts.
I'm excited for all these players.
I mean, again, they,
they seem like fun intriguing players to keep an eye on and they,
and they go well with, you know, like know, like Xavier Scott from last year as well, who was a wide receiver
slash running back in college at Maine. Just seeing those types of archetypes coming to your
team is just always an enjoyable thing. So really cool undrafted free agent class. I think Slovis
and Bean are the ones to really keep an eye on. And then Penix, maybe if the Colts want to go with
like a fullback or a bigger running back at the bottom of their roster he maybe has a chance but those
are probably your big three that have a chance of making it the other guys maybe practice squad
guys but really cool intriguing names to keep an eye on here going into colts training camp and
colts rookie mini camp which comes up next week but going into our final segment guys we're going
to talk about the rookie numbers release i know, some of you guys love the number aesthetics.
We have to talk about it at least a little bit here on today's show.
This next segment is brought to us by our sponsor, BetterHelp.
Sometimes we all need the opportunity to get something off of our chest, big or small.
Certain things can really start to get to you.
It's important to let that out, especially to someone who's unbiased in your life. So today I want to say how I really
feel about something. You might even be thinking about the same thing this week. I don't know if
you guys are like me, but I peruse Colts Reddit quite a bit. I know that's, you know, an issue
of mine that I peruse Colts Reddit. I know some of you guys are listening to this that are active
in Colts Reddit and I love you guys, but I constantly see, you know, these questions
posed in Colts Reddit about Will Fries being cut or Will Fries being on the roster bubble,
or, oh, Mackensalves or Tanner Bortolini has a chance to start over Will Fries.
No, no, no. Will Fries is not on the roster bubble. He's not going to be cut going into
the season. Like, this could be his final season with the Colts.
Don't get me wrong.
He's in line to have a nice little payday when he hits free agency next year.
So we'll see what happens there.
But no, Will Fries was a good player for this Colts team last year.
A young starting right guard who started over 20 straight games for the Colts.
He's doing really good things.
And he's really proved himself as a former seventh round pick.
He's not really good things, and he's really proved himself as a former seventh round pick. He's not getting cut. The Colts are not cutting a valuable offensive lineman to save $3 million. No, Will Fries has played some great football, and he's going to be a Colts player this
next season. He might be one long term as well. So let's cut that out, Colts Reddit. Cut it out.
I'm tired of seeing the post. I'm really tired of seeing it. All right, cool. I got that off my chest. So now we can talk about how therapy can be different

All righty, my numbers, aesthetics, locked on Colts every day as we are talking Colts rookie numbers they just released
today before I jumped on today's recording I wanted to make sure I had that just in my back
pocket before we recorded today yeah we got some cool numbers here one thing we do want to make a
note of though before we dive into the rookie numbers is veteran cornerback Dallas Flowers
is changing his number from 33 to 21. So that means Dallas
Flowers is on pace for the Hall of Fame now. Like, I don't know if you guys realize that because 21
is just the best number. If we're really going into this number aesthetic thing, 21 is by far
and away the best defensive number you can have. I mean, Bob Sanders made it look great here in
Indy. Growing up, I was a Washington fan. I got to see Sean Taylor rocking that number. Perfect number for a defender. So Dallas Flowers is now my favorite player on the
Colts. But I digress a little bit. We're going into the rookie numbers here. Layatu Latu, which
was leaked earlier in the week, he's going to be wearing the number 97 for the Colts. Now the last
player to wear number 97 for the Colts was the great Al-Kadim Muhammad. Hopefully, Latu can live up to that
expectation that the 97 brings to this Colts team, but we do love that he did get a number in the
90s. He's going to have a defensive line number. I know some people are fickle about defensive
linemen wearing the ones and the twos and all those things, but no, he's going to be wearing
that number 97 this next season, and I expect that one there to stick. So I think 97 is going to stick for him.
I don't think it's one that's going to change after cutdowns or anything like that.
97 will be his number for the near and distant future here with the Colts.
A.D. Mitchell, I know that there was a lot of talk about him maybe wearing the zero or
wearing like a single digit number, but he opted to go with the number 10, which I think is a good
number for a wide receiver. Now I know obviously we're going to see him this like taller, lankier
wide receiver wearing number 10. We're all going to think Darius Fountain, but no, I think there's
a lot of cool things behind this one. I love the reasoning that came out behind him wearing number
10. Stephen Holder of ESPN did say that that was the number of wide receivers that was
taken before him in this draft. So again, you just love that added motivation that comes behind a
number. So number 10 for AD Mitchell, I would give it like an eight out of 10. And then when you hear
the reasoning behind it, it bumps up to a 10 out of 10. So lucky number 10 right there with AD
Mitchell. Offensive lineman Matt Gonsalves, number 71. Very good number for an
offensive lineman. Anything in the 70s is really solid for an offensive lineman. Can't complain
whatsoever there. Center Tanner Bortolini is me wearing number 60. Solid number. Again,
can't complain whatsoever. 60 is a good one there for center. Again, I'm not the hugest on number
aesthetics, but I do like those offensive lineman ones there. Wide receiver Anthony Gold, the player who I thought could have best embodied the number zero,
unfortunately chose number six.
Six is solid, but I'm a big fan of the agent zero number.
I grew up a Washington Wizards fan.
I got to see Gilbert Arenas a ton in basketball, and I just love that number zero aesthetic.
I'm very sad that the Colts still don't have someone wearing that zero.
But Anthony Gould, he's going to be wearing number six to really just embody the taking
over Isaiah McKenzie's role in this offense.
So Anthony Gould, he's going to be wearing number six.
Again, solid number.
I wanted the zero selfishly, but six is cool.
Linebacker Jalen Carley is wearing number 57.
Good linebacker number uh can't complain there
Jalen Simpson wearing number 30 the one that was made famous by George Odom as a special teamer
if he can live up to the intensity and the play style of George Odom when he was on the field
30 is going to rock it for Jalen Simpson there so fun one there Mika Abraham he's taking Dallas
Flowers old number at 33 one of the few remaining numbers
available there for, you know, defensive backs, so 33 is good. At least it's not in the 40s,
like Jalen Jones' number, number 40. We're at least getting a little bit lower with these
defensive back numbers, so 33 there for Micah Abraham. And then Jonah Luwalu is wearing the
Anthony Costanzo number of 74 on the Colts defensive
line.
Now, part of this was because the Colts just simply did not have any numbers in the 90s
still available.
74 might have been their highest number available here for him.
So that's what he kind of got stuck with.
But outside of Jonah Luoluo's number of 74, I think all these are good numbers for the
players in positions that they play. Again, 74 is kind of atrocious for a defensive tackle.
But because you have 98 is pseudo-retired, 93 is pseudo-retired,
and I think a couple other numbers in there are kind of retired as well.
74 really might have been the highest number available for him
just to play defensive line.
I guess he could have gone with the zero there.
But 74 for Jonah Luwalu, probably the only train wreck there. But you he could have gone with the zero there, but 74 for Jonah
Lualu, probably the only train wreck there. But you guys let me know in the comments section what
you think of these rookie numbers. Again, I personally love the AD Mitchell change to 10
when you put the reasoning behind it of 10 wide receivers taken before him in this past draft
class. I love that extra motivation. And some of these other numbers are really cool as well. So
let me know in the comments section what you think about these Colts rookie numbers,
and if you'll be buying any of these Colts rookie numbers from the NFL shop and just
rocking your, you know, your Mack and Salvez number 71 or rocking your Anthony Gould number
six jersey this next season for the Colts.
But I think that's all we have for today on today's Friday show, guys.
