I'm your resident credentialed
Starting point is 00:01:01 media member for the site, and I am on site at Grand Park today covering day six of Indianapolis Colts training camp. If you want to get the inside scoop on training camp, you know, hear from the locker room throughout the season, just kind of know what I know. Then sign up to be a locked on Colts insider and chat with us directly and get that inside scoop. Just follow the link in our show notes below. All right. So today let's discuss day six of Indianapolis Colts training camp. It was their second padded practice and only the first one that has been moved indoors due to just absolutely saturated fields today. It's been raining a lot here in central Indiana lately. So they moved indoors today. Again, it was a padded practice. You don't see too many of those indoors.
Starting point is 00:01:46 So it was fast and physical. Really, the main stories from today were Liatu Latu. And then, of course, we always got to talk Anthony Richardson. So before we get into it, let's discuss injuries, of course. Dio Adangbo, who has a calf injury. He missed his fourth straight practice. Amir Speed, we don't know what he has yet. We got to a calf injury. He missed his fourth straight practice, a mere speed. We don't know what he has yet.
Starting point is 00:02:06 We got to ask about that. He missed his third, uh, will Mallory's dealing with a hammy linebacker. Jalen Carlize has a hip. Uh, they have missed two consecutive practices. Now, uh, the only guy who was a new addition to the injury report today was Cameron McGrone. I don't know what he's dealing with yet. Uh, that's another one we'll have to ask about. Obviously, Samson Ebicom was out.
Starting point is 00:02:28 He got injured, I think it was Sunday. Obviously, he's out. He's perhaps going to be out for the year, but the Colts haven't put him on IR yet, so we're just going to really keep discussing it until then. Raekwon Davis, obviously, is on the non-football illness list, and Chris Lamans is on PUP right now with an ankle. Those guys remain out. Very positive news, though, defensive end Titus Leo going into his second year. He got carted off of the field with
Starting point is 00:02:57 a knee injury on Tuesday, and most of us automatically go to ACL or some sort of season-ending injury at that point. He was back on the field today. So that was really good to see. He had kind of a sleeve and a brace on his left leg. So at least he was able to get back. That's someone I would really like to talk to soon. Just the psychology of it all, because he missed all of his rookie year last year with a knee injury. And then that had to be the first thing that came to his mind on Tuesday. So I'm really glad to see that guy is able to get back and hopefully make a complete
Starting point is 00:03:30 camp out of this thing. So that is injuries out of the way. Let's talk Anthony Richardson real quick. He was eight of 12 passing on the day. That's 66.7% completion. It was kind of a bumpy day for him up until the two-minute drill uh he went five of five in the two-minute drill which greatly increased his uh his completion percentage and how the the day looked overall uh but yeah the two-minute drill was was uh when he really got work done he was crisp uh passes were generally pretty accurate. And he moved the ball down the field a bit with the offense, the first-team offense, on their second go-about of it in the two-minute drill, ending on a 36-yard field goal from Matt Gay.
Starting point is 00:04:16 So let's see. Michael Pittman Jr. had three catches. Kylan Granson had three. A.D. Mitchell had one. And Josh Downs had one. And then the biggest blemish for Anthony Richardson today was he had an interception thrown deep downfield to Julian Blackman. I'll get more to that later because it's more about Blackman, so we'll talk about him in the defensive segment. But Anthony even said after practice today, you know, he's being more intentional about getting the ball downfield. They want to be a vertical offense. So we have seen a lot of downfield work coming from them. Big plays by Richardson. He had a touchdown throw during seven on seven. So Michael Putman Jr. in the low red zone. So from about five to 10 yards out.
Starting point is 00:05:03 He also connected with A. mitchell on a 25 yard corner route uh so that was a big play like like i said we've been waiting on ad to make more plays during 11 on 11s uh just a short while later richardson targeted mitchell about 35 yards down the left side and they didn't come down with it but ju Juju Brents was flagged for defensive pass interference. So those spot fouls, those DPIs can be brutal for defenses to deal with. And technically they are as good as if Mitchell would have come down with that 35-yard reception. So some productive things to come out of it, but overall, you know, not the best day we've seen from Anthony during camp. Now, a guy who, as you know, on this show, we're talking about him day in and day out
Starting point is 00:05:49 because he is just relentless and seems to just be terrorizing the offense is rookie Laatu. Had him with another two would-be sacks today. Of course, we say, you know, hypothetical or would-be because you can't hit the quarterback. He's strung together a really strong series in the first team two-minute drill. He pressured Richardson into an intentional grounding penalty, and then right after that got a would-be sack on Richardson that ended that entire session of 11-on-11s for the first team. Again,
Starting point is 00:06:25 they took another whack at it later, but the coaches had had enough of what lots who was forcing the offense into. So really, really big day from him. Again, you're just seeing this consistently his ability to get off the ball with lightning speed,
Starting point is 00:06:42 convert speed to power. His bend is outstanding. He's just an explosive player. And with lightning speed, convert speed to power. His bend is outstanding. He's just an explosive player. And with Samson Ebicom, you know, unfortunately being out perhaps again for the season, this was really big for Latu to show up and have a big performance. Especially don't forget that Dayo Adengbo, like I mentioned at the top of the show, he's been out for four straight practices.
Starting point is 00:07:06 Taekwon Lewis is probably someone who they would like to keep in a minimal role so they can pack that powerful punch in just a small sample size like we saw Taekwon do last year. So at this point, with Ebukom injured and Dayo Adangbo still sitting out, if Latu is still terrorizing the offense at a certain point, he's going to have to become the primary player on the other edge. So if this guy can keep stringing that stuff together, that'll be really, really big for him. So coming up next, we will talk about the offensive side of the ball and then wrap it up talking about the Colts defense.

Are you guys watching the big time talking head shows and you just have to turn it down because what they're saying is just outrageous or it's just playing too loud? We'll go ahead and make the switch over to Locked On Sports today. It's a free 24-7 sports streaming channel that's programmed for you every day to bring you the
Starting point is 00:08:57 biggest stories without all the screaming. Again, it's streaming 24-7 on YouTube or the free Amazon Fire TV channels app. It's part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. All right, so let's chit-chat offense. Primarily, they were working on high and low red zone stuff today, continuing their in-game situations, first, second, third downs, moving the ball in a normal capacity, and then the two-minute drill at the end. So again, A.D. Mitchell had a pretty decent day.
Starting point is 00:09:27 I mentioned he had a couple big plays with Richardson, one of them successful, one of them drew a penalty. So he had a nice day. Again, in one-on-ones and seven-on-sevens, it's one thing to have success there, but when you're doing it in 11-on-11s, that's when it's truly an indicator that you're coming along and really getting the hang of it and can make a difference
Starting point is 00:09:51 if thrown into a game during the regular season. He did have another nice play. This one was with Joe Flacco. During red zone work, Flacco found him from about 5 to 10 yards out in the end zone for a touchdown, so that was good. The rookie is stacking some days. Of course, I don't know how close the competition is with Alec Pierce, but I will say that Mitchell is getting more and more of the first team reps lately. I'm sure that's intentional just to get him used to playing with the rest of the guys. I don't know if it's just so deliberately that they're making Mitchell the
Starting point is 00:10:27 starter now, but I just think they want to get Mitchell as involved with the first team as they can. So when his time comes during the regular season, when he's out there, he is used to being around all those guys. So again, I do think Pierce probably still has this,
Starting point is 00:10:42 this slight edge. He's not going away anytime soon. And he's at his own solid training camp. Like Pierce hasn't had a bad performance by any means. I think Pierce probably still has this slight edge. He's not going away anytime soon. And he's at his own solid training camp. Like, Pierce hasn't had a bad performance by any means. You heard our friend over there. He's going to start becoming a celebrity throughout camp. If he doesn't shut up, apologies.
Starting point is 00:10:59 But, yeah, the rooster is back in town. Moving on to another receiver that Joe Flacco seems seems to be connecting with and that is ashton dylan uh they had a couple big connections today um flacco really threaded a needle and hit dylan in the end zone in traffic uh again from about five to ten yards out and uh dylan has really been turning it on the past few practices i know he is kind of a Colt following fan favorite. You know, one of the guys a little lower down the depth chart that, you know, has a strong following, including us here at Lockdown Colts. They also connected later in the two minute drill. That was good to see Doolin help continue to move the chains. He makes difficult catches routinely, and that's big for him. Another
Starting point is 00:11:46 couple guys that stood out, the Colts are getting this developmental period going during their 11 on 11s, where it's basically all the guys at the bottom of the depth chart who don't normally see reps during 11 on 11s with the first, second, and third teams, or they see really minimal reps, they get out there. That's when we see quarterbacks Keaton Slovis and Jason Bean, really. It's been kind of slow moving for that group in the last week, but today they started to make a couple more plays. Slovis rolled out and found Juwan Winfrey for a nice gain of about 15 yards along the left side. And then one guy that is sneaky, and I don't know how long it's going to be sneaky because I have a feeling when the preseason comes, this guy is probably going
Starting point is 00:12:29 to be making plays. That's running back Trent Penix. He is someone who is routinely making plays during these developmental periods. He broke another long run today, seemed legitimate. Again, with pads on, the way that the offensive lineman, his blockers, and the rest of his teammates reacted to that play. It seemed like it would have been a legit play. So really good stuff. That's if you're looking for a dark horse on the Colts, I'm starting to really dig into Trent Penix. I think he's got a little something. And then this is not necessarily tied to gameplay, but just kind of stuff you don't necessarily see reported everywhere.
Starting point is 00:13:13 One player who I found is really displaying some leadership, and it's a guy that's at the bottom of the depth chart really, but wide receiver Tyree Cleveland. That may even be the first time you're hearing his name. I have noticed him this week really like pulling some guys aside and showing some of the younger guys the ropes and giving them some tips and tricks and just really showing some leadership. That's to be at the bottom of the depth chart and trying to impart knowledge that you know on other guys. I think that takes a, it just takes a strong leader really because you're leaving your pride aside and trying to make the team better.
Starting point is 00:13:49 One guy he was helping a lot today was Clay Fields, one of the corners. Fields is someone I've also noticed who he's trying to soak up everything. I've seen him ask for pointers and stuff from a lot of guys. He talked to Cleveland today. I saw him talking with Jalen Jones and Dallas Flowers. Dallas Flowers helped him quite a bit. So keep an eye on stuff like that. These are guys that probably aren't going to make the roster, but you like to see them doing the right things and maybe it'll help them during the preseason. They can make some nice plays here or there that if it doesn't get them on the Colts roster come week one,
Starting point is 00:14:24 it's something else for another team and maybe it gets them a shot at the practice squad somewhere else. So I like to see stuff like that. You know, watching gameplay on the field over and over and over is great. And I never get tired of it, but I do like those little details, kind of the human element of training camp. So, and the rooster element of training camp, he hasn't stopped. And I'm sure you guys can hear that on here. So yeah, we're going to wrap this up in a minute. We'll talk about the defensive side of. I love sports guys. I love them so much that I never want them to stop. But as the playoffs wind down, we get fewer games in our leagues and the sports just aren't sporting like we want them to.
Starting point is 00:15:06 But FanDuel lets us keep the sports going whenever we want. All we got to do is open the app and dream up bets anytime that we're in the mood. Of course, the Olympics are on right now. That's got the sporting world in a stranglehold. Baseball is still going on. So there are things to bet on. Preseason action. We had the Hall of Fame game last night.
Starting point is 00:15:23 You could bet on preseason games. So this summer, FanDuel is hooking up all customers with a boost or a bonus daily that's right there's something for everyone every day all summer long so head over to fanduel.com and start making the most out of your summer fanduel official sports betting partner of major league baseball let's talk defense so guy truly, his name comes up every day along with Liatu Latu. This guy comes up every day. It's Julian Blackman. He had another interception today. So I mentioned Anthony Richardson through that interception. So Richardson went probably like 40 yards downfield, threw it into double coverage to Michael Pittman Jr., and Blackman just kind of jumped up, got in front of Pittman,
Starting point is 00:16:08 and came down with it. Just in the last week, that is Blackman's second interception, and he's got at least like four pass breakups involved as well. So he is really making a difference. Now, it is impossible to ignore the fact that, like, all the plays that Blackman is making are downfield. Why that is of note is because he's the strong safety who's often going to play closer to the line of scrimmage. So some of these plays he's making are recognizing that he is allowed to abandon what's in front of him in the box
Starting point is 00:16:42 and follow the ball because he knows where it's going and he knows that he's not abandoning an option that's going to get burnt underneath. So part of it is high instincts. Part of it, media asked after practice today to Shane Steichen, is Blackman part of the free safety mix as well? Because to this point, we still don't really know what the safety group is. And second confirmed, yes, Blackman is playing some free safety as well. So with that said, this is kind of a new wrinkle in the free safety battle. So what it has been for the vast majority of camp is Blackman at strong safety. And then you have Nick Cross, Ronnie Harrison, and Rodney Thomas battling it out at free safety. So now if Blackman is factoring into this at free safety as well,
Starting point is 00:17:34 you do have Nick Cross and Ronnie Harrison who are more natural strong safeties. Perhaps one of them winds up being the strong safety. We now really need to talk to Gus Bradley and Ron Miles again because this could just be cross-training. I don't know. It could be what they're trying to figure out about their safety group. So do they have to move Julian Blackman again away from strong safety back to free safety and then decide to go with Harrison
Starting point is 00:18:02 or cross at strong safety? We're going to have to see. um, practice. There's no practice tomorrow. Uh, they get back to it on Sunday. Uh, but I, I do think we're going to need to get with Gus Bradley and Ron Miles again, uh, and ask them about this. You know, how deliberate is this? Is it just cross training or does Julian factor into free safety now as well, which of course opens up strong safety. So the free safety battle is now getting even more interesting. I don't know if a free agent factors into it or not. I think this is one we're just going to have to keep talking about until they sign a free agent or we see week one what the plan actually is
Starting point is 00:18:45 do the colts even know officially what the plan is or are they still figuring this thing out um i don't know it's not the best look because it's obviously the biggest position that everyone has been screaming about them needing help at all off season and it doesn't seem like we have an answer yet as to what they're gonna to do. So stay tuned for that. That's obviously something we're going to talk a whole lot about coming up. But that wraps it up for us today. Again, no practice Saturday, everyone. You can have a day off.
Starting point is 00:19:16 I'll take the day off. Go to the Indiana State Fair. That's what I'm going to do. And then we'll be back at this thing on Sunday.
