I'm your boots on the ground credentialed media member of the site. And Zach is the most hard-nosed film nerd in the biz today. And today we are answering more of your questions because it's been about a week or so. There's been a lot of
Starting point is 00:01:16 developments in camp and the preseason. So we got to hear from you guys and we love answering these questions from you. So let's just go ahead and dive right in so we're gonna go kind of rapid fire because there are a lot of them today zach don't make me raise my voice with you i'm gonna go quick today okay okay let's do it all right so as we started off at the top of the show this one uh on all these for are from twitter uh At WorkmanSTE, bunch of numbers. Do you think that Liatu Latu is the defensive rookie of the year? And then at CopaceticYR said, what is the over-under for Latu's sacks? I'm kind of compiling those together.
Starting point is 00:01:57 I'll let you have the floor first. Yeah, so first off, do you think he is the defensive rookie of the year? Technically, he's not that yet, so we have to say no to that will be will be semantics. Yes, I know. But will be I think there's a good chance. I mean, I don't think this is purely homerisms or getting too crazy in the hyperbole. I mean, he was the top defender taken in this past draft. You know, the Colts took him as the highest defender in the class and that happened to be at 15th overall, but still getting him at 15th overall is kind of a blessing to this team. But from everything we've seen in training camp, what we saw from him in college in terms of his productivity, what we know, like what goes into the position when it comes to voting for rookie of the year. I mean, defense rookie of the year is almost exclusively a pass rusher or cornerback thing. Like it really only goes to, you know, cornerback or pass rusher. So I think he's got the advantage there. So as long as he puts up a pretty good stat line, again, he's the top defensive rookie taken in this past draft. So I think if it push comes to shove and he's close
Starting point is 00:03:00 with some other guys, he's going to win that tiebreaker because of that draft pedigree. So yeah, I think there's a good chance, man. And look, maybe if Samson Nebukom is healthy this year and Laotulatu doesn't get as many snaps, it's more of a question mark if he's going to get enough snaps to really be that guy this year. But I think there's a decent chance. I mean, probably the best chance we've had from a Colts rookie in the Chris Ballard era, you know, to win a rookie of the year. I mean, Shaquille Leonard came out of nowhere. Yeah, Shaquille Leonard came out of nowhere. That wasn't expected. Yeah, yeah. I more so just mean in terms of that first year play, maybe like a Malik hooker,
Starting point is 00:03:37 those couple moments we got from him in his rookie year. But I do think Laotu Laotu has a good chance this year. And if he just shows what he's been showing so far, I think it can certainly happen. Yeah. And I think the only reason this is like kind of a big question mark is because in Colts country, we're kind of used to being the bridesmaid or like not even invited to the wedding.
Starting point is 00:03:57 Right. You got a front runner here, guys over at FanDuel. Laatu is the betting favorite for defensive rookie of the year with plus 400 odds. And then as for the other question in terms of sacks, you know, what's his over-under? So historically, let's just say he has like, well, let's say he leads the Colts in sacks. That may be the expectation at least. So there have been 36 rookies in nfl history to post 10 plus sacks uh the record was javon
Starting point is 00:04:27 curse with 14 and a half in 1999 in order for him to get the defensive rookie of the year you gotta think he's gonna have to be number 37 he's got he's gonna have to get the double digit sacks i'm gonna say he can do it um all reports out of camp, everything I've seen, everything anyone nationally, anyone on his team, coaches, everything is super positive. Like Quiddy Paye just said he moves like water last night, if that tells you anything. So I'm going to say so because, like, I'm not more confident in Dallas Turner or Quinion Mitchell
Starting point is 00:05:03 or anyone like that. Some of those, you know, like a Quinnian Mitchell or Cooper to Jean or someone may have some huge splash plays. But I'm going to say just the consistency and totality of lot to season is going to lead to him getting the defensive rookie of the year. Yeah. I think, you know, you probably put his over under on sacks at like eight this year, which is a great number for a rookie.
Starting point is 00:05:24 Fantastic number for a rookie. If he hits eight this year and he is a great number for a rookie. Fantastic number for a rookie. If he hits eight this year and he's a consistent pressure monster, I don't care if it's, you know, eight to 10, whatever it's going to be. I don't even care if it's five, but he's getting a ton of pressures and QB hits.
Starting point is 00:05:34 Like it can be whatever, like I value just getting pressure on the quarterback and disrupting the offensive play. So it doesn't need to be 10 for this to be a fantastic rookie season, but I do think that the expectation shouldn't be super low because of where he was taken and his age and his development. Like the expectation should be higher for him than maybe any other Colts pass rusher that's been drafted under Ballard because he comes in with this pedigree.
Starting point is 00:05:59 These other guys didn't. Yeah, I'm saying he's going to do it. All right, moving along to our boy Nick Spaghetti 33. Which game of the season are you most excited for matchup wise? And perfect health is assumed for all players. I just just you got to do it. So perfect health. Oh, the Colts are the picture of health. So for me, just really quick, I have two on here at Houston and week eight and at the New York Jets in week 11. To me, those are both barometer games. They're on the road. All spotlights will be on those matchups as long as the Colts are doing their part and assuming Houston and the Jets will again, because we said health is assumed. So knocking off CJ Stroud on the road
Starting point is 00:06:45 or knocking off Aaron Rodgers and the Jets on the road, it's Monday or Sunday night football. It's a primetime game. Those will be huge. I do get annoyed a little bit with the lack of notoriety the Colts get. It's mostly for their players. Some of their players aren't as highly regarded
Starting point is 00:07:03 as I think they should be, but they have to win these type of games in order to start getting attention. Yeah, the one I've had circled since the schedule got announced was obviously week one versus Houston Texans. Get them at home exactly where their season ended last year. You get it to start the next season and try to get that revenge game and the grand reopening of Anthony Richardson out of the way in week one. So I think that's always been the one I've had circled, but also the Miami Dolphins game at home. You know, you get two fast explosive offenses in that turf dome right there. I think that's going to be a really fun game to watch. So those have been the two that I've had circled,
Starting point is 00:07:39 but especially that Texans game in week one. I think that's the most important game of the season, at least for me right now. Yeah, that seemed like a layup. I just don't feel good about that one right now. So next one, this one I was really interested in for you, and you could try and condense it as much as possible. From E-ChessNet, what's it going to take for Gus Bradley to change his defensive scheme on third downs?
Starting point is 00:08:03 I'm guessing that means just maybe more blitzing and more like press coverage, like making life a little more difficult for offenses on third down. Probably a loaded answer, but go ahead and give it a shot. I was going to say, we're going to talk all about his defensive scheme and changing the entire intricacies of it. I think maybe a gun to his head might change a lot of it. But besides that, you know, it's a difficult thing to answer because he does throw some variety of things in there. I know that he leads the NFL in cover three usage and single high usage by a wide margin every single year. But it's not like on third down, it's always cover three. He does mix in some too high stuff.
Starting point is 00:08:41 He does mix in some blitzes. I mean, we saw against the Baltimore Ravens last year. They blitzed at like a 40% to 50% rate in the fourth quarter and overtime periods in that one, and that's a big reason why they got that win. So there are some changes that he does mix in every now and then, but for the most part, look, Gus Bradley is going to be Gus Bradley. That's why he's here. He does some good things with the defensive line.
Starting point is 00:09:03 He mixes in some sim pressures and mixes in some, some blitzes every now and then. But I think when you're asking a question like this, you're more so being like, what can we do to get him to run more press man and more blitzes? I don't think there's anything you can really do with Gus to get there. Again, there will be some times where they will throw that stuff in there,
Starting point is 00:09:22 but if you're asking to get that up to like a Mike McDonald type of rate where it's like, you know, almost every third down, it's probably not going to happen. It's just not like you're probably going to want a different defensive coordinator, which I'm sure you probably want if you're asking this question here. So yeah, long, long answer shortened. I don't think you're really going to get Gus Bradley to change too much. He kind of is who he is at this point. And for better or worse, he's our defensive coordinator this season. That and you kind of got to work with the personnel you've got.
Starting point is 00:09:51 I'm sure, you know, if you got him at a bar, he might want a couple of other players from the outside. But I don't, I'm just, I'm just saying that's me. I think everybody would say the same thing. But yeah, I mean, a coordinator's got to work with the players that he's got. So coming you're Zach and me, you come home after being around too many people, too many noises, and you just scream into a pillow. That really helps me quite a bit. Outside of that, when your schedule is packed with kids' activities, big work projects, and more, it's easy to let your priorities slip. Even when we know
Starting point is 00:10:44 what makes us happy, it's hard to make time for slip. Even when we know what makes us happy, it's hard to make time for it and prioritize it. But when you feel like you have no time for yourself, non-negotiables like therapy are more important than ever. Again, I tend to deal with my feelings by maybe yelling in my car, yelling at a pillow, self-destructive habits. We don't know. I should maybe check into therapy. Starting point is 00:11:48 Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. All right, guys, we're jumping into more of your questions, talking more about individual expectations or just kind of individual players here with this next segment. And our first one here I think is my favorite one we got in this segment. It's all about Adetomi Adabore, our guy on the interior defensive line. Where does Tomi stand after the preseason? He seems to be doing good in pass rush, but how is his run defense?
Starting point is 00:12:13 And that's from at JustinDraper50. Now, I do want to direct you guys to HorseshoeHuddle.com because I did write an article on Tomi and Isaiah Land as well. I kind of lumped those two guys together and talked about how those rotational pass rusher guys could be a big key to the Colts defensive line this year. But I think Tomey was awesome as a pass rusher in that first game.
Starting point is 00:12:35 I think that, you know, obviously Latu and Taequann Lewis were phenomenal in their very, very limited snaps they had to start the game. But the best overall pass rusher for the Colts in that game was Adetomi. I think he was disruptive. He was very, very strong at the point of attack. Did a really good job of just disengaging some blocks, which we didn't really see him do that too much last year.
Starting point is 00:12:58 Last year was good at getting guys into the backfield and then having a guy run into him. And that was the sack that he got. It wasn't more so disengaging. I thought he did a great job disengaging. Now, when it comes to his run defense, he's still about a 280 pound defensive tackle. You really don't want him out there for run defense, especially because other teams kind of target him with the duo runs and the inside runs where they're going to, you know, get
Starting point is 00:13:24 two hats on a guy and really drive him off the ball. So, you know, the run defense left some, some error, some room for error there, obviously, and some, some room to improve. But I think as a pass rusher, he was great. And look, you don't have to get him out there for run defense as long as Raekwon Davis is healthy. So get Raekwon Davis on the field and we're good. But yeah, I think Tommy did a great job in that first game. I'm very excited about him. And I think the jump he's made from year one to year two is really showing so far in what I've seen. What have you seen, Jake? I know you've seen him every day out there in training camp. Yeah, he's turned heads a couple times. You know, his the first time we watched one on ones, his strength and ability to drive guys back just immediately kind of jumped
Starting point is 00:14:03 off the page. But no, I mean, reports are positive for him, especially the last week or so. Grover Stewart has complimented him. Cody Paye talked about him last night. Gus Bradley. So he's, I think he's improving. You're hearing positive vibes about him the way you would have hoped you were hearing him about Eric Johnson last year. So they have a depth defensive tackle who is making strides.
Starting point is 00:14:31 That's definitely good news. Up next is from our guy at Old Colts Fan. Do you see undrafted free agent guard Dalton Tucker making the 53-man roster? I think he had a good game against Denver on Sunday. Is he showing well in practice as well i'm gonna wrap that into another one from uh someone who were a family show so i'm not gonna say their uh their twitter handle but they asked if there were any standout undrafted free agents that might make the roster do you see the notes now yes i see the name in there now. Yeah, so Dalton Tucker is my answer for that one.
Starting point is 00:15:06 I think Dalton Tucker's had a really strong camp. He's been a fixture with the second team line at both left and right guard. And again, he had a good performance in the preseason game. So I'm good with saying Dalton Tucker is the UDFA I probably feel best about making the roster. Oh, there we go. Sorry. I cut out there for a second. I think that was on me. But I'm assuming you were going on about Dalton Tucker while I cut out. But yeah, Dalton Tucker, I think, was the most impressive undrafted free agent this past weekend when I watched the games. I clipped up a couple of his snaps against Denver.
Starting point is 00:15:42 If you want to check me out on Twitter, at Zach Hicks 2 is where I put some of those clips but yeah I think he has a decent chance man like he's the backup right guard right now and the Colts typically keep between nine to ten offensive linemen and to me for my money I would have him over Josh Sills I thought he looked better than Josh Sills in that one you get him on the undrafted free agent contract which is a little i mean we're talking very very little difference here in contract but still a little bit you know a little bit savings right there and he's a younger player worth developing uh so yeah i think dalton tucker is my guy that i like is the undrafted free agent to make the team this year i was really impressed by what he did and you know maybe you could throw craig young in there too from kansas the linebacker but he's got just a tougher like uphill battle he's linebacker like
Starting point is 00:16:29 fourth unit guys right now we're talking Dalton Tucker with the second team offensive line and and as you've been saying on the show a couple times like he's been up there for most of training camp with the second team offensive line yeah I think the biggest thing for him is there's now kind of a clear path with Wesley French's injury. Yeah, his injury was or injury French was not only a center, but he also played all along the interior. Whereas like a Danny Pinter is really just a center. Tanner Bordellini gets some center and guard reps. So someone like Tucker who plays guard and is not, he hasn't been getting center reps, but someone who offers a little more versatility than a Pinter does. I think that
Starting point is 00:17:11 gives him a leg up to really go and replace what you lost with Wesley French. Yeah. Yeah. So Dalton Tucker, I'm in, I think he's the undrafted free agent to watch. I was not really on my radar coming into camp, but so far, man, all signs are good for him. So I'm feeling pretty good about him. Yeah, for sure. Next up from at the gentlemen's between Keaton Slovis and Jason Bean has the time come for one of them
Starting point is 00:17:36 to take over the development QB three role from Ellinger. So this one's interesting for me because I only think the Colts are going to roll with two quarterbacks on the active roster. If it were me, I would just go with Anthony and Joe Flacco. It's just a numbers game. And I just don't know that you can afford to keep that third quarterback. You could try and get Sam back on the practice squad. And then that just kind of resolves your issues for the most part.
Starting point is 00:18:05 But I think, you know, Jason being does some nice things. He's, you can be creative with them, but for what they're looking for, I would imagine Slovis is the bigger threat to Sam Ellinger. Neither Slovis or being really get reps in the 11 on 11 periods, other than the developmental periods. But those two are going to play a hell of a lot these next two weeks yeah yeah i don't see for me personally i think ellinger is pretty safe i think he's going to make the roster i would say so too yeah yeah i i think you and i are on the
Starting point is 00:18:37 same wavelength where if we were running things we'd probably cut ellinger just because look if you're down to your qb3 it's over already at this point but but uh I do think the Colts ultimately keep him there on the roster and I don't think Slovis or Bean has really pushed him too much like you said if they were getting some of the reps in 11 on 11s then it'd be a different story but they're not really getting that but I really do love at least one of them as a practice squad guy if they keep Sam on on the active roster. So, you know, you can have Bean down there to be your more mobile guy that can maybe come up in a pinch if some injuries were to happen. Or Slovis, you want to develop more of a pure passer.
Starting point is 00:19:16 But I like the idea of either one of them as practice squad quarterbacks. I think they could be decent backups in the NFL. Yeah, this last one real quick because i especially want to answer this one because i've heard it a couple times um from at charles dickens is anthony ghoul stock up or down with the signing of greg ward unchanged these don't have anything to do with one another so greg ward helps fill bottom of the roster depth and just add some reps with what Josh Downs is missing, basically. Yeah. Gould and A.D. Mitchell are mostly taking on Downs' offensive role, but Ward is a slot receiver that can work with the Ellingers and Beans and Slovises of the world.
Starting point is 00:20:03 And he can also be in on that rotation for kickoff return and punt return. So it doesn't affect Anthony Gould at all. Yeah, Greg Ward, if he affects anybody, he affects DJ Montgomery or Laquan Treadwell's spot on the practice squad after cutdowns. I think that's really the only place he really factors into all this. Good preseason player to have, good preseason body to have out there, but Anthony Gould's fine. Anthony Gould's going to have a role this year. He's going to be a good player for the Colts this year. Yeah, without a doubt.
Starting point is 00:20:32 Coming up next, we're getting into miscellaneous and maybe some holes on the roster because those are the burning questions. I love sports. I love them so much that I never want them to stop. But as the playoffs wind down, the Olympics are done, we get fewer games, and the sports stop sporting like we want them to. But FanDuel lets us keep the sports going whenever we want. All we got to do is open the app and dream up bets
Starting point is 00:21:01 anytime that we are in the mood. And this summer, FanDuel is hooking up everybody with a booster bonus daily. That's right. There's something for everyone, every day, all summer long. Look, I told you guys earlier, we are sickos at Locked on Colts. It's the preseason. The betting lines are open, so we're going to do it. Colts are three and a half point favorites on FanDuel at home on Sunday against the Cardinals. A combined over-under of 36 and a half. I told you guys earlier, murder that over. You saw what Colts Denver was last week. Do it again. Head over to FanDuel.com and start making the most out of your summer. FanDuel, official sports betting partner of Major League Baseball. All right, we're starting out spicy here, Zach. From at Chef Shogunate or Shogunate, I'm not sure.
Starting point is 00:21:52 You know, it's hard to tell context over Twitter. What does Chris Ballard seriously expect to happen with the secondary? This is like the Jets offensive line last year or when the Colts had Julian Davenport playing tackle. I'm not going to disagree with you. You know, I can already, I can picture the end of season press conference already. And Chris is either going to roast us in the media room for questioning him all off season about the secondary and it works out or he's going to own up to it.
Starting point is 00:22:26 I think it's going to be bad if he has to own up to it because every fan and everybody in the national and local media says, hey, look, here's the problem. This is what you got to do. And they haven't fixed it. So I'm with you. I think he has optimism. I don't know if he is just not wanting to dole out guaranteed money or little bit much, but I don't think he's necessarily
Starting point is 00:23:05 wrong with this comment here. Look, at the end of the day, I can justify obviously three of the starters in my head, Julian Blackman, Kenny Moore, and Juju Brents. Those were guys that definitely deserve to be starters and almost needed to be starters with how much you've invested in each one of those guys over the years. But yeah, the Jalen Jones with not really any competition starting is a little bit much. And Nick Cross, obviously, with no competition whatsoever starting is a bit much as well. And then you throw in a scheme that doesn't really do too much exotic stuff pre-snap, doesn't really disguise a ton. You're really leaving these guys susceptible to getting burnt
Starting point is 00:23:45 out there so what what do we think Chris Ballard's expecting from this group probably more than what we're expecting hopefully he ends up being right because that would be great for all of us uh but yeah I think that my one comment about all this and look I love Jalen Jones I I really do love Jalen Jones I think he's a solid nfl corner and i think he's perfectly fine but it is really funny that jaylen jones went from being a seventh round pick that ballard has been very very open about like not really being all all in on him as a prospect being like it took a scout convincing me just to take a shot on this guy to one year later being a guy where it's like we're not bringing in outside competition jaylen jones is the guy where it's like we're not bringing in outside competition jalen jones is the guy and it's like and his main competition was an undrafted free agent from two years ago
Starting point is 00:24:30 who just tore his achilles yeah so it's not like that was the plan all along you know what i mean like and if it was then do you right so we'll see we'll see guys i mean at this point i don't think there's gonna be much outside help, maybe some waiver claims. But yeah, how much can you really expect a waiver claim to come in and do a ton for your team? So we'll see. We'll see, guys. We've talked about it quite a bit this offseason. I'm glad you mentioned waiver claims, Zach, because that's the next question. How many claims or I'm going to kind of frame it as what position groups do you think they should put waiver claims in for around the cut down time? This is from Daryl Ingram 31. He said he personally
Starting point is 00:25:12 sees them looking at a free safety backup linebacker outside corner and nose tackle depth. I don't think they'll do nose tackle if Raekwon Davis can get back because that kind of solves a lot of issues there. But secondary, I don't think this team has much faith in Rodney Thomas anymore. Like I think they have three safeties they like realistically. I think it's cross to a degree Harrison to a degree in black men to a very high degree that they really do like it. Safety. I don't think Thomas really factors in too much. I think they're trying to give him some more chances,
Starting point is 00:26:04 but I just, to me, just my vibes of it. I don't think really factors in too much. I think they're trying to give him some more chances, but I just, to me, just my vibes of it. I don't think he factors in too much. So I think they're going to try to claim a free safety, maybe a corner. But again, they like Simpson. They like Baker. They like Flowers. So I don't know about corner.
Starting point is 00:26:21 Even speed, they like as a special teamer. I could certainly see a linebacker, like maybe as like a fifth or sixth linebacker if they find like a grant steward type like just another guy can go out there and just dominate on on kick coverage uh but outside of that maybe it maybe an offensive lineman again like a guard or something like tucker just gets pushed to the practice squad and they take another guard off of waivers but i think my the good money would be on a free safety and maybe a pass rusher to replace land if they're not seeing enough out of land, but I like land.
Starting point is 00:26:52 So it's hard for me to really say that, but I don't know. We'll, we'll have to see. I would certainly claim a nose tackle for sure. A 350 pound nose tackle just to sit there in the middle, but we know how the Colts are with that. Taven,
Starting point is 00:27:04 Brian's going to be a starter at some point this year. So I just a sneaky position. I feel like they add a, I feel like they add a new running back at the beginning of the season every year too. That's true. We'll see what trade.
Starting point is 00:27:20 Yeah. Trey Sermon's hammy. We'll see what that they, they may have really liked Dimitrik Felton and targeted him already if he was going to be a cut. So maybe that wipes that off the board. But historically, they do add running backs pretty early in the season. The last one, we didn't get to this one at the top of the show from at JLMW52.
Starting point is 00:27:43 Can you explain in detail what is involved in a walkthrough practice? This is good. We like the education of it all. So in the most simplest terms, a walkthrough is essentially like a dress rehearsal for your practice. It's, you know, you're kind of installing things or, you know, working up your plan for the day, but not at full speed. It's literally just a walkthrough. They're directing guys where to go. And, you know, it's, it's very much a slow paced learning experience. A dress rehearsal is really the best way I can put it. It's a practice for your practice. Yeah. If anyone makes a mistake, you have to do the speed walk around the, around the field.
Starting point is 00:28:27 You know, they tell you to do laps, but you're not allowed to run. So it's speed walking like that Olympic event that I did not know was an Olympic event this year. But yeah, no walkthroughs are just making sure that you have the, just the proper knowledge.
Starting point is 00:28:40 Like, you know, you, you do all the simulating of what you would do in a game. Like you have Richardson do a huddle calls a play in detail, does his checks at the line, snap the ball. And it's kind of just walking through your route, like where you're supposed to be on your route and stuff like that. It's, it's not too egregious. No, hopefully no one ever gets hurt in walkthroughs. I mean, I know some people do, but it's really just to keep you fresh
Starting point is 00:29:02 physically while still testing your mind a little bit with the game of football. Yeah, I may be wrong, but you can pretty much have unlimited walkthroughs if I remember correctly. Yeah. But yeah, they want everybody to hit the ground running during practice so that they're prepared and know what they're about to do at practice and don't have to stop and explain everything. So shoot, I think that is it. It's almost practice time.
Starting point is 00:29:25 Almost practice time. Guys, you've already got two shows from Locked On Colts today.
