I go out of town for one day, and it becomes a hectic Colts Newsday, full of roster moves.
Come catch up on everything with me.
Let's get to it.
You are Locked-on Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast, part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
All right, thanks for tuning in and making us your first.
listen of the day. This is your daily podcast covering your Indianapolis Colts, part of the
Locked-on podcast network, your team every day. And today's show is sponsored by prize picks.
Download the Price Picks app today and use code locked on NFL to get $50 in lineups after
you play your first $5 lineup. What's up everybody? This is Jake Arthur of Horseshoehuddle.com,
your resident credentialed media member for the site. And today we are catching up on a hectic,
just week of Colts news.
So obviously on Tuesday, the Colts had their roster cutdowns.
Zach and I talked to you guys about that.
Wednesday, Chris Ballard spoke to the media.
And then, you know, the practice squad starts to form.
We start to get rumors about guys who were working out.
Waiver claims come in.
So there's been a ton of stuff happened over the last 24 hours or so.
I have been out of town, but I feel like I had to cram for a test I was ill-prepared for coming
into today's show. So catch up on everything with me here because we got a lot to talk about.
So we're going to start out here with a successful waiver claim that the Colts had.
So they brought in linebacker Chad Muma from the Jacksonville Jaguars, a little bit of
inner division rivalry there. So Chris Bowler, when he spoke to the media yesterday, he mentioned
that they were really looking to upgrade the linebacker room, which makes a lot of sense,
obviously because, you know, they had Zyre Franklin and they did keep Shea Guilubi,
Joe Batchi, and Cameron McGrone, of course, but they weren't done.
You know, they put Jalen Carlis on IR with a designation to return of it.
They clearly wanted more at a position that we told them all offseason they needed more at.
So look at them finally, listen to us there.
So they brought in Chad Muma, again, from the Jaguars, who got waived there in Jacksonville.
Now, looking at Muma's background, he's kind of a bigger guy.
that seems to kind of be the Lou Anorumo prototype at linebacker,
whereas we're used to seeing these Matt Iber Flus and Gus Bradley linebackers
that are a bit on the smaller side.
Muma is right around that 6263-235 plus.
He's in that area.
Just looking at his history, he's definitely more of a special team's guy.
So what we've seen in the past with Shagu Alubi and, you know,
Grant Stewart and Cam McGrum.
You know, McGrane is probably going to have to take a little more of a leap in the defense department department this year.
But MoMA definitely seems kind of cut from that cloth.
He's got some defensive experience there with the Jaguars over the last few years.
But it's not a lot.
It seems like he's mostly, you know, when you're looking at him in his best, he's mostly a good run defender who's a pretty sure tackler.
He's had some lapses at times, I think two years ago was kind of a rougher season.
for him. But in general, it looks like he's more of a positive run defender at linebacker who's
not going to play a ton, I'm sure, but is more of a kind of a core special teams guy. So with this one
waiver claim, the Colts actually saw several of their players go out the door, you know,
by waiver claims. So Juju Brent's, the cornerback that we discussed was one of the more
significant cuts for them. He got picked up by the Miami Dolphins. Now, of course, the Dolphins
visit the Colts here, you know, the end of next week, week one, they'll be at Lucas Oil Stadium.
So Will Brent's play? We'll see. He was making his way back from a hamstring injury that cost
in the last couple weeks of Colts camp. So we'll see if he's free to play. Isaiah Land,
which Zach and I told you guys, was probably our most disappointing cut. He's someone for me
when I projected the 53-man roster. I had him cut just because I had a strong feeling they were
We're not going to, even though they've been developing in the last couple of years,
they were not going to put him in over Typhon Lewis and Samson, Eviecom.
So he was just kind of a victim to a numbers game.
So the Colts picked him up off of waivers a few years back when the Cowboys waived him.
Now the Cowboys would like him back, and they are bringing him back into the fold.
So Land goes to where he began his career going back to the Cowboys.
The Colts had waved tied in Jolani Woods, and he is now with the Jets.
So I think the Jets tight-in room is definitely one that some Colts fans will be interested in from afar, just peripherally,
because they obviously drafted Mason Taylor in the second round of the draft, and now they have Woods.
Mason Taylor was a guy where if the Colts were going to miss out on Colston Loveland or Tyler Warren,
who they obviously ultimately got in the draft, then Mason Taylor was like the target to have.
So I think some Colts fans will be pretty interested to see what comes of the Jets.
that's tied in room this year with Woods and with Mason Taylor.
Quarterback Samuel Womack landed with the Titans on waivers.
Now, he obviously was someone who kind of helped save the Colts secondary last year.
He himself was a waiver claim by the Colts last summer when Juju Brins got hurt.
And then, you know, it was just basically Jalen Jones out there.
Dallas Flowers was someone they were kind of having to rely on.
So Womack came in, started a handful of games, but played.
throughout the season and for the most part did really well until the wheels kind of started
to fall off there at the end. But that was a positive move for the Colts. And he also just
kind of became victim to a numbers game. The Colts had a really, really competitive summer
when it came to the cornerback position. And Womack just became expendable. So he goes to a division
rival in the Titans. So that's a couple times here they'll be facing off with Womack. And then
the Colts waived Tim Smith as well, defensive tackle Tim Smith, who initially made the 53-man
roster, but they waived him to make room for Chad Mumma. So he's got to be on waivers for the 24
hours. I think as long as he clears waivers, he'll be back on the Colts practice squad.
Obviously, plenty of reason for them to want him back because they got Eric Johnson on the active
roster. Josh Tupo's there on the practice squad. So bringing Tim Smith back to the practice
squad if they elect to do so allows them to just kind of get a longer look at what they want to do
at nose tackle behind grover stewart that was that was a battle this summer that no one really
ever separated themselves truly so they could just keep this thing rolling and on a week by week
basis whoever they need to call up to the game day roster they can do so and then one of the
most interesting things for me is who the colts continued to work out so we already knew about
Mike Hilton. We talked about that on the show the other day. That was Louana Rumo's long-time
nickel corner from the Bengals. Those two worked very well together, had a good relationship.
And in their time together, Hilton was one of the most frequently blitzed nickel corners
in the NFL, which led us all to assume, you know, Kenny Moore is going to be back on his old
ways when he blitzed quite a bit earlier in his career. So the Colts haven't signed him yet or
anything, but the Colts did work out Mike Hilton. They also worked out a couple veteran linebackers.
Anthony Walker, who you guys will all remember, the Colts drafted him in the middle rounds back in
2017. It was a starter for them for a few years. Spent the first four years of his career with the
Colts. But then Bobby O'Caricay kind of rendered him expendable. He moved on to the Browns
for a few years where all three of his years with the Browns, he signed one-year deals each year
and actually ended up on IR at some point all three years.
He then went to the Dolphins last year and spent this offseason with the Buccaneers.
So he's bounced around a little bit in the years since he's left the Colts.
I'm interested in that one.
I probably wouldn't play him much just physically.
Number one, he's been really banged up.
And number two, I wouldn't play him and Zire Franklin.
But probably the best thing about Anthony Walker from the moment they drafted him,
He's a coach's son, and he's a strong leader, very high IQ player.
If for nothing else, what they could do is if they suffer some injuries at linebacker during the season, they could bring Walker in.
He's probably a guy that could pick up the defense pretty quickly and honestly kind of help some of the younger guys along get acclimated as well.
And the Colts have also worked out Kaiser White, former Cardinals linebacker.
Now, if you guys recall, I've complained about linebacker the entire off season.
And the first guy I always mentioned when I talked about bringing in an outside guy was Kaiser White.
Now, he's not like a spectacular player.
I just figured for what they need, which would be like a veteran to come and compete, which is what Joe Bachi has done, essentially.
Kaiser White would be a good one.
So I think he's got like three 100 plus tackle seasons in his career, very productive play.
He's coming off a real rocky season with the Cardinals, but he's been relatively solid,
both as a run defender and in past coverage throughout his career.
He could basically give you stylistically what you've been getting with Zeyer Franklin,
like a last year version of Zaire Franklin, where Franklin started to get a little bit better
in past coverage and did a lot in the box, you know, is going to be prone to being out of
position every now and then.
But for what the Colts need, you're not going to go out there and find like an elite linebacker at this stage of the game.
You just need veterans out there who understand what the assignment is, what they're doing, and can get you through if you need to get them started.
So Anthony Walker for me is a guy who, you know, keep his number for later if you need him during the season.
Mike Hilton is kind of the same way for me.
But Kaiser White, I'd be fine with them bringing him in right now.
so that's that's it from an acquisition standpoint so far and we haven't even talked about the
practice squad yet which you know what that still counts as the roster as well because they can
bring any of these guys up throughout the season at any point so we're going to need to get
familiar with that practice squad as well so we will discuss that in just a moment all right
this episode is presented by price picks the daily fantasy platform that lets you turn
your fantasy predictions into real rewards.
Preseason is already heating up, and the college football isn't far behind.
Whether you've got your eye on big-name quarterbacks or breakout running backs,
price picks makes it easier to get in the game.
There's an upcoming weekly flyer that I noticed, that Prescott's max discount for Thursday,
September 4th, the opener versus the Eagles.
So you're going to go more or less than a half of a passing yard?
Go ahead and pick that one, and I think you can make some coin on that.
Price picks is simple to play.
I just pick more or less on two to six player stat projections.
If you get your picks right, you can cash in and win up to 2,000 times your money.
I've used Price Picks personally for a few seasons now, and I love how simple it is.
They've been a longtime partner of ours, and I just think it's probably the most fun to play
when you get that itch to play some sort of daily fantasy, you know, the games are on
and you just want to make something of it.
Price Picks is a good way to play.
I could get a lineup in before my coffee even finishes brewing in the morning.

in our show notes as well so be sure to get in on that action all right so let's talk colts
practice squad the ever-changing practice squad that could be
even doing things right now as we speak so right now as of like an hour or two before the show
started we're at 16 they have one more spot tied in maximilian mang is an international player
pathway participant how many p words can we say right there so he is an exemption and gives
them a 17th spot whereas all the other teams who aren't participating in the program get 16
so let's go ahead and roll through what we're looking at with the practice squad currently
No quarterbacks, no Jason Bean, we, Zach and I were a little skeptical leading in,
whether they've kind of frozen him out enough to even get back to the practice squad.
The writing was on the wall there a little bit at the end of training camp where his reps
just diminished greatly in favor of Riley Leonard.
And so we began to get a little curious if he was going to be brought back.
And if they did bring him back, were they going to lean in to the receiver portion of it
that they initially thought they might when they signed him as a rookie undrafted last year.
So no quarterbacks currently, but again, there is one spot available.
So we'll keep an eye on that.
At running back, you got Khalil Herbert and Ulysses Bentley.
Those were to be expected.
You know, Tyler Goodson with that elbow injury, he's still not practicing yet.
So his status for week one is obviously up in the air.
So you got Jonathan Taylor, you got DJ Giddens, also on the actual.
roster. So week one, you got to imagine they're going to call either of Kalil Herbert or Ulysses
Bentley up. My guess would be Herbert as long as his hamstring injury is cleared up a little
bit because he's banged up as well. So if it's not, it could be Ulysses Bentley, the rookie
undrafted three agent out of Ole Miss. All right, receiver, really no mystery here as well.
LeQuan Treadwell is the most recent one that I mentioned as of a couple hours ago.
Coleman Owen, those two were studs in the preseason and in training camp, made a lot of
plays on a pretty regular basis. Tyler Scott is a new player, though. Now, he has got ties to
Alec Pierce and Brian Mason. They were all together from 2020 to 2021 there in the University of
Cincinnati. So Scott has played a little bit with the Bears in his first two years in the league.
you know he he's started a few games he's played in a good bit of them he's got some got a little bit of
teams um utility as well he's returned kickoffs uh he's i think it was punt return punt coverage
and kickoff coverage i think uh he he's got a little bit of experience there so he's worked
with um ryan mason before obviously so that could be where they go with that if they ever need
to use him and call them up to the active roster.
But at the same time, the Colts are already six strong at receiver.
So that one could be a tough one to crack without an injury happening.
Tight-in, they've got Sean McEwen and Maximilian Meng.
Those are two blocking tight-ins.
So that, I think, is just strictly for, if anything happens to Moe Alley Cox or Drew Ogletree during the season.
Offensive line, they've got a few guys they like.
So Josh Sills is someone who could play tackle or guard.
he is someone they could plug in like right away like they've had to use him before
a very brief stents but marcellus johnson the tackle and mose vivio those are two rookies
um they are more developmental guys that i think they could hope to see some long-term dividends on
like maybe by next year they're making the roster as the eighth ninth guy uh vivio is very
interesting for me at fresno state he played all along the interior left guard right
Guard Center. Pretty interested in him. And then Johnson actually came to the Colts from the
Giants through the Waver Wire earlier this summer. So he's a guy they're interested in as well.
Defensive line, you got Dorel and Chami and Josh Tupo. Those are also two guys kind of just on
different wavelengths of why they're there on the practice squad. And Chami essentially is your
new Isaiah Land. I would say he was a good developmental guy to have good password.
pressure to have stood out well in training camp in the preseason and was just a layup for them
to get him on the practice squad. So he's there. I don't really see him getting to the active
roster quite yet like Isaiah Land did early in his career, but we'll see. And then Josh
Tupo, I think, is just insurance for them behind Grover Stewart and behind Eric Johnson. Tupo
played for Lou Anirumo in Cincinnati, so that's just a guy they have in their back pocket
if they need to bring up to the active roster at any point during the season.
Tupo could certainly fill a role.
He knows what to do under Aniromo in his system.
Linebacker, which is sure to not, you know, it's sure to grow even further than this.
But Austin to Jockey is their lone linebacker on the practice squad, more of a special
team's guy, but they've been able to use him at Mike and Will throughout training camp.
I've been with the team a couple years now.
Chris Lamont's at cornerback.
that is a guy, I think, is going to wind up seeing some time on the active roster.
So he is, should be kind of considered their primary backup nickel, unless that's what they're going to do with newcomer Mackay Blackman.
Lamonts has been with the Colts a couple years.
They didn't re-sign him to a futures deal after his contract expired following last year.
So he hit free agency, didn't wind up coming back to them until August.
But when he did, he hit the ground running and he did really, really well,
made some plays in the preseason.
Ultimately, they did cut him.
But as Zach has been mentioning recently,
that's a guy they could just call up to the game day roster from the practice squad a few times
until they kind of exhaust their uses with him.
And they have to either bring him up permanently or cut him loose.
So Lamont's definitely a guy I think we're going to see in the regular season.
And then it's safety, Trey Washington.
undrafted rookie at Ole Miss, really started to come on later in training camp,
obviously had the kind of dark moment where he injured Salvin Ahmed on the hip drop tackle.
You know, that could have been the end of the line for him.
The Colts easily could have just let him go at that point,
but, you know, they see something in him.
They think he's got a lot of upside, and so they keep him around,
bring him back to the practice squad.
And then someone else they brought in just today is Ben Nicol, kind of a bigger guy,
second year practice squad guy out of Iowa State.
He was with the commanders last year.
His role, if any, if he ever gets called up, is almost exclusively going to be special teams,
just looking at his career so far.
So the practice squad taken shape.
They have one more spot open, which I assume is going to be Tim Smith once he clears waivers.
But if not, you know, they, as we saw, they are bringing in a lot of guys working out some veterans.
They don't necessarily have to go right to the active roster.
They can work those guys out and bring them to the practice squad.
So we're going to see more stuff happen in the coming day.
So keep an eye on that.
And then guys coming up, there's some other stuff to talk about, you know, the Colts named captains today.
Some interesting guys who are not on the list.
And then there's luckily some positive injury news to talk about as well.

All right, guys. So the Colts announced team captains today. So it was DeForest Buckner,
Kenny Moore the second, Zire Franklin, Quentin Nelson, and new quarterback Daniel Jones.
So everybody else has been multi-time captains for this team. Daniel Jones, obviously,
a first timer for them um so Shane Steichen explained that uh they were going to cap it at five captains
last year they had seven which seemed like a lot um especially for a team where you know leadership
became something people were questioning holding people accountable seems like a lot of cooks in the
kitchen if you're asking me so they capped it at five this year again it was a player vote
uh Shane explained that back in 2023
he had Peyton Manning come in and just present something on why being a captain is so important
and, you know, just what it means to be a captain.
He had Reggie Wayne do that in 2024.
And then this year, Shane just said he basically laid out explicitly what it should mean to be a captain on this team and wanted them to vote based on the people they best felt exemplified what a captain should.
be for the team. So I think that's a pretty good list of five guys. Like that's other than Jones
being a newcomer, that's five guys or four other guys. I would absolutely identify as leaders on the
team. Now, with it being capped at five, that obviously does mean some guys from last year no longer
captains. Anthony Richardson, not a captain, was a captain last year as the quarterback, but now that
is Daniel Jones, which kind of brings it, it's kind of sobering, you know what I mean? Like, obviously
your backup quarterback's probably not going to be a captain.
But it's one of those things where it's like once you see it, it hits a little different.
And then Jonathan Taylor and Michael Pittman Jr. are no longer captains that they were last year.
Again, if you're cutting guys off, someone has to hit the cutting room floor, obviously.
But Michael Pittman Jr., that one's interesting because like the guy played through a mess back for them last year.
And, you know, it is what it is.
that doesn't make him not a leader, but, you know, that's certainly a guy who still does
have strong leadership qualities on that team. So that's that team captains for the year are
announced outside of that. The Colts have gotten back to the practice field this week.
Now that the preseason and training camp is done, they're gearing up for week one against the
Dolphins. Actually just got the media schedule for next week, and they are fully into regular
season mode now. So some positive news, Josh Down.
is back on the practice field as of yesterday from his hamstring injury.
That is obviously someone you do not want to miss on the field,
especially with Daniel Jones.
A guy like Josh Downs should absolutely eat in this offense.
And then at safety, Nick Cross, he is back as of today.
He'd been out for several weeks with a hip flexor injury, I think about three weeks or so.
So really good, especially as a starter to see him out there.
If we're going to see this defense at its best,
you're going to need to see Cam Bynum and Nick Cross out there.
So those two guys are practicing again.
Still no Tyler Goodson, though, dislocated elbow, which should not require surgery, just some rest.
They hope to have him back early in the season at some point, but it looks like if he's still not out there at this point,
he may not be ready to go by week one, but we'll see.
You know, they have Kalil Herbert and Ulysses Bentley there on the practice squad that we mentioned.
So that should certainly help.
Well, that is all I've got for you guys today.
Certainly there's going to be more information to come.
Zach and I have a lot more to discuss about this roster where we think the high points are,
what could still use some work.
So we'll put a bow on this thing for you guys tomorrow before we officially enter regular season mode next week as well.
So we'll have some nice structure to our weekly schedule and we'll get into that coming next week, obviously.
