The Colts just made one of their more polarizing draft picks in recent memory.
Let's get to it.
You are locked on Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast
Network, your team every day.
All right, thanks for tuning in and making us your first listen team every day. All right.
Thanks for tuning in and making us your first listen of the day.
It is after midnight, so I'm confident in saying it this time.
This is your daily podcast covering your Indianapolis Colts, part of the Locked On Podcast Network,
your team every day.
And today's show is brought to you by Monopoly Go.
My competitive side is a big fan of monopoly go which is the

app store or google play what's up friends welcome to the show it is late it is after day one of the
draft and the colts have their newest member of the team on board, and it is someone that has just drawn a line right in the sand of the Colts fan base.
It's UCLA edge defender Laatu.
Pretty unexpected, I think, for the Colts to land him.
Not necessarily unexpected for the Colts to take an edge,
but I think we all thought it would be Dallas Turner if the Colts were going to do that.
But as Chris Ballard said afterward here at the end of the night here at the Colts were going to do that. But as Chris Ballard said afterward here at the
end of the night here at the Colts Complex, that was their top defensive player on the board.
They had about four or five elite grade dumb players in this draft, and Latu was one of them.
So the Colts got their man. They had the pick of the litter. It was 14 consecutive offensive players taken.
The Colts took the first defensive player off the board.
So, Zach, we'll get into in a second why this is polarizing the good and the bad,
but give me your general vibes on this move.
Yeah, I mean, I think this is the most shocking pick that I've seen Chris Ballard make.
I mean, the Josh Downs one was pretty shocking too,
just for him drafting a five foot eight wide receiver was really out of
character for him. But, you know,
for someone like me who goes into Chris Ballard's draft history,
goes into, you know,
his draft roots and who he learned from and stuff and tries to figure out
what type of player he goes for. Yeah.
Latu was not really a guy on my radar.
You know, a guy with a bit shorter arms off the edge, a guy that's not as explosive. He's more bendy than explosive.
That's typically not what Chris Ballard goes for at the edge rusher position. So yeah, I was very
shocked that this was the selection, but I don't think it's like a shock, like I'm a pissed off
shock or an upset shock. You know, I mean, lots who is a very fantastic college player who projects really well to
the NFL game.
I mean, when you're looking at what this guy did in college over the last two years at
UCLA, he averaged nearly one sack per game at UCLA.
It's a power five school.
Like we're not talking, you know, FCS level or anything like that.
This is a guy who averaged nearly a sack per game at a Power 5 school,
and his pass rush win rate at the college level rivals that of Nick and Joey Bosa,
two of the best pass rushing prospects that we've seen in recent memory.
Now, he is a little bit older.
He does have the neck injury, which we'll go into detail the best we can with that.
I mean, again, we're not medical experts,
so it's hard for us to really say too much about that either way. But I think this is a player where even if you're not the biggest
fan of everything that he brings, you can at least understand the process. I mean, he has legit
pass rushing potential and the floor is already sky high because we just saw him dominate at the
college level last two years.
So even for someone like me, who I prefer Dallas Turner there at 15, I preferred maybe a Quinnian
Mitchell at 15, even over Latu. But I understand exactly what the Colts are going for here. So I'm
not going to be upset with this pick because I think he can be a legit pass rusher in the NFL.
Maybe he's not this complete player, this superstar run defender and all these other things too, but I think he can rush the passer at a high level. If the Colts
think that's the missing piece on this defensive line, I totally understand the pick there at 15.
Yeah, without a doubt. So let's kind of go into detail a little bit about
what's got people so up in arms, that side of it. So he will be 24 years old at the end of December.
That's pretty old for your rookie year, but it's not unheard of by any means.
There's always guys this age as playing as rookies.
The biggest thing is, so he was forced to medically retire when he was at the University of Washington in 2020.
He had a neck injury that cost him two seasons.
He had a cervical neck fusion surgery on that and uh so the university of washington did not clear him so he decided to return to football
transferred to ucla ucla did clear him and uh he played two years since then and was incredibly
productive in that time so we talked a lot too, right after he got picked,
we obviously asked him about the medical stuff and he was asked why Washington
wouldn't clear him. And he said, basically, you know,
it was during COVID and it was, and I quote a funky time.
And he said, he just doesn't think it was handled well.
He was never really given given proper physical examinations.
It basically just seemed like, you know, a medical professional, a doctor,
saw what the injury was rather than, like, going into detail specifically on Latu's case
and said, eh, I don't really think this is a great idea for you to continue.
But fans who are now upset about the medical thing,
this person just went through the most thorough medical investigation
of his life for the last three, four months,
especially here in Indy, what those guys go through at the Combine.
I'm sure he probably did Combine rechecks.
If teams were worried about it, they would have found out that it was a problem. guys go through at the combine. I'm sure he probably did combine rechecks. Like if teams
were worried about it, they would have found out that it was a problem. And the Colts are,
I know they are very wary about taking guys who have chronic medical issues early in the draft.
They would not have invested the 15th overall pick in a guy who they thought
this neck was going to be a problem at any part of his career.
Yeah, yeah.
And, I mean, again, I can't really add too much to the neck injury because I just don't know.
I don't know much about that kind of thing.
So it just feels wrong for me to talk about that.
All I can talk about is what I see with this guy on film
and what I see with this guy and his ability to play at the next level.
And when the Colts say that,
you know,
this is a guy that they had an elite grade on.
I fully believe that because they had the pick of the litter among defensive
prospects in this draft.
They had the number one pick at defensive player.
They could have gone Turner,
Mitchell,
Arnold,
all those guys on defense.
And they went with,
with law to a guy that they really felt could be an elite defensive player.
And one thing I really wanted to say about Latu before we get to other segments that we want to touch on today's show.
If you are someone who comes to our comment section after every show we do, because I see it all the time, guys.
I see it.
I'm on the YouTube.
I run the YouTube channel.
I see it.
So I know exactly what happens here.
If you guys come there and say,
Chris Ballard has no clue how to draft edge rushers.
He's the worst edge rush drafter in all the football.
He sucks at edge rushers.
So we can't have him ever draft an edge rusher again.
This is the type of player that you want then,
because this is not a Chris Ballard edge rusher.
This is nothing like the other edge rushers that he has taken have been projections. They have been guys who in 41 career games in college had 12 sacks,
you know, guys who, you know, who just did not produce at the college level.
Lots who was nearly a sack per game type of guy the last two years was the best pass rusher in
college football over the last two seasons at the college level.
So if you're looking at the type of guy that Chris Ballard typically drafts and saying like,
oh, this is just another Chris Ballard edge rusher, that's wrong. That's wrong. You can
have issues with the pick. You can have issues with the player and you can have your issues
with Chris Ballard. I'm not trying to defend him here. I'm saying if your typical stance is the Chris Ballard edge rusher does not work,
then this is your kind of guy here.
This is your guy.
This is not the Chris Ballard typical edge rusher.
This is the guy with the high floor who is going to be a productive pass rusher in the NFL,
regardless of what happens.
And he still has that ceiling he can hit as a pass rusher.
This isn't the quitty pay where it's like, okay, we're getting a high floor run defender
who maybe one day can grow into a pass rusher.
This is a guy who has been a dominant pass rusher.
Maybe he doesn't have this 45-inch vertical or anything like that, which I know we all
love here.
But he has what you look for on film.
He has the polish that none of these other guys really had.
So I'm a fan of this pick just for that.
I think this is a guy who can do the things that we just haven't seen from other Chris Ballard edge rushers.
And I think if any position needed Bill DeBallard to fall apart, it was at edge because it was not working at edge.
You know, 25% of his top 100 picks in his
career with the Colts have been on the edge rushers. And what is that? What do we have to
show for it? We have maybe Dio Dangbo, maybe Quidipe, and all the other ones have been failures.
So I think Latu is the perfect change up to throw in here and say, look, let's get a high floor guy
who could also have that high ceiling of a really top level
pass rusher. So I think Lottie's a strong pick for the Colts. I've really come around on it,
obviously watching more film and diving into what his game looks like. And I think this fit's
going to be really good. I think him alongside DeForest Buckner will give the Colts their best
pressure rate and their pressure percentage and all those things that they've had in the Chris Ballard era.
Yeah. And one thing that translates really well normally from college pass rushers to the pros
is that production, which like you said, that's not something that the normal Ballard edge has.
They're raw guys with tons of room to grow, but they were never finishers in college. They didn't have the numbers.
Latu had 23 and a half sacks and 34 tackles for loss just in the last two years.
Like, that is bananas numbers.
And when you watch his film, you just have been watching it all night.
The guy moves at a different pace than everybody else.
He can beat you outside.
He can go inside on stunts.
When you turn on the tape and you don't even know who you're watching,
that's the first guy you notice.
And, you know, Chris Ballard was asked tonight,
what's a good game to watch of his?
He said USC against Caleb Williams, the number one pick.
So this guy is, like, legit.
Like, don't be scared of the guy who just wasn't on the radar for the Colts to pick because we didn't expect it.
Because, like you said, it's just not of the guy who just wasn't on the radar for the Colts to pick because we didn't expect it because like you said it's just not of the normal mold but we're going to go into this further here
in a minute we'll talk about what Latu's role might be with the Colts initially and then obviously
long term and then we'll polish this thing off with some guys to watch on day two

All right, Zach.
So when we think about how does this move affect the team
and what is Latu's role in the short and long term,
the first thing I think of is the Colts have to decide
whether or not to pick up Quidipe's fifth-year option by May 2nd,
which feels like probably not. You know, I think they've probably expected Quitty to be not,
not further along in his development,
but maybe more of a better edge rusher to this point,
better pass rusher, very, very good run defender has some,
has some catching up to do as a pass rusher.
So I think this directly threatens that spot.
But, you know, Pei's coming up on free agency
if they don't pick up that fifth-year option.
Dio's a free agent next year.
Samson Ebicom in two years.
Tyquan Lewis in two years.
So over these next couple off seasons,
they will have a pretty big gaping hole on the edge.
And now they've got a guy who they hope
is around for the next decade. Yeah, you know, I think we talked about a couple times on the edge. And now they've got a guy who they hope is around for the next decade.
Yeah. You know, I think we talked about a couple of times on the show. We've done so many shows
this draft season. I can't remember which one it is at this point, but the one position I felt
most comfortable saying the Colts are going to take in the top 100 was going to be edge rusher,
you know, because I could see so many different moving parts at wide receiver and corner
and them neglecting one of those positions.
But Ed Rusher always felt like they were going to get somebody else in here because of, like
you said, the Quidipe could be a free agent next year.
Dayo Dangbo could be a free agent.
And then Ebukom and Taekwon Lewis, you know, they're coming up on free agency as well.
They need another young player in the building just to get ready for the future.
But yeah, with Quidipe, you know, it's not like he's a bad player.
He's really not a bad player at all.
He's a really, really good run defender, like one of the best run defending edges in football.
And he's a solid pass rusher.
Like it's not a bad pass rusher by any means.
But what Latu does, he gives you more upside at the pass rush position.
Because when you're thinking of Pei at this point, this point, we're going into year four of his career.
It's not like he can't take that next step as a pass rusher,
but usually by year four, you have a good feel for what the player is.
And clearly by taking Latu this high,
it's not directly saying like Quidipe can't take that next step,
but it's them saying, okay, we need to get another body in here,
another very capable edge rusher in here. And yeah, it does impact that fifth year option decision.
I do expect them to decline it as well, but I'm not going to say 100% on that because there is
still value in having a guy like Pei alongside a player like Latu. I mean, Latu, one of his bigger
issues on film, at least is in the run game. He's not a fantastic run defender right now.
UCLA did take him off the field quite a bit in the run game.
And Quidi Pei right now is, again, a top-tier run defending edge rusher in football.
So there is value in having both those guys where you can kind of have a nice little rotation going with them
and then see what happens going forward.
But, yeah, I do think this directly obviously impacts Quidi Pei.
It might impact Dayo Adengbo.
I mean, look, we're all implying that this means Quidi Pei won't be back with the team,
but it could be a Dayo Adengbo thing.
I mean, if you look at Latu's film, he rushes a lot from the interior.
He rushes a ton from the inside, a lot of three-tech work.
That's where Dayo Adengbo rushes on past rushdowns as well. So, you know, it lot of three tech work. That's where Dio Dango rushes on pass rush downs as well.
So, you know, it could be multiple things here.
It could be that they, you know, cut Sam Senebukom after the year instead too
to keep all the young guys in here.
There's a lot of different ways the Colts could go with it.
There's a lot of flexibility up front.
But I think the one thing we can say for 2024 is the rotation in the trenches
at pass rush is going to be pretty nice. It's going to be pretty nice.
It's going to be pretty nice.
I mean,
whatever,
however way you cut it and look at it,
you know,
you're going to have one of Taekwon Lewis,
Samson,
Ebukam,
Daiwa,
Dangbo,
Quidi Pei,
and Liatu Latu off the field,
or we're going to have two of those guys off the field on pass rush downs to,
you know,
alongside DeForest Buckner.
So I think they have a lot of flexibility at pass rushers.
They have waves of pass rushers coming in.
And at least for 2024, I think that's very optimistic
for what we could see this group produce.
Yeah, I think so too.
I'm very curious what his role is going to be as a rookie.
I'm definitely not comfortable saying he's a starter yet
because I think Samson, Evucom, and Quidipe
are both pretty established starters.
I think he's going to be a rotational guy as a rookie.
Now, what does that look like?
Like you mentioned, I think it's going to be more based
on particular packages,
like with your obvious pass rushing situations.
I think it makes a lot of sense to have Evucom
and Latu on the outside
with Buck and Dio on the inside. I think that makes the most sense. So I think there's going
to be, you know, just special ways they get him involved. What do you think? Probably like
25 snaps a game. Does that seem too low for a first round pick?
I think it depends, obviously.
It depends on how the rotations look.
It depends on how healthy the defensive line is, obviously.
But I think his early role, for the most part,
will be more of a rotation with Ebukam on rundowns
and then on pass downs, probably subbing in for Quidipe
and getting a lot more of those pass down looks than Pei does
if they end up keeping all these guys. that's that's the big thing here uh but yeah i think lotto is going to have a
pretty pretty big impact in year one i mean i think more than 25 probably i probably say like 35 to 4
like say there's a 60 snaps on defense in the game i would say like a good 35 to 40 probably
makes a lot of sense for him in here in year one yeah that that sounds good
because i mean like i said he's probably not going to be a starter but i'm trying to pay like
probably more than what taekwon lewis was seeing probably i guess more of the dio at dangbo roll
but you don't want to take dio off so that's I guess, part of the good problem of having so many
edge guys right now is you kind of just have to let the cream rise to the, to the top. So I don't
know. He's, he's only a rookie not to put the cart before the horse, but at least in year one,
he's going to be a rotational guy. There's just a lot of mouths to feed and a lot of snaps, but
at least we know the guys who are out there are, are going to be the best ones for it. Like they're, you're going to have to
fight for snaps on this defense. Yeah. Yeah, for sure. One more thing I wanted to say about
his fit with this team and, and overall, before we transitioned to our final segment and talking
about, you know, day two guys that we like for the Colts. But one thing I wanted to mention is
Charlie Partridge has worked with a lot of
bigger edge rushers in his career.
A lot of guys who are more in that 260 to 270 type mold that Latu falls into.
And one player that really sticks out to me is Trey Hendrickson over at Florida Atlantic.
Obviously, when when Partridge was there, I think a very good
comp to what Latu can bring to this Colts is Trey Hendrickson, that bigger body guy who's also very nimble and quick for his size, who can get around the edge, who can use some power as well.
I think that Partridge's past experience with a guy like Hendrickson will bode very, very well in getting Latu up to speed quick and ready here for this next level of play.
So I'm excited, man. I do think that, again, it's going to be more like a 60 to 70% snap count here in year one,
but that's good.
That's good.
We don't want to see what we saw from the edge rushers these past couple of years and
what we saw at defensive tackle, obviously, where these guys are playing like 80 to 90%
of the snaps.
You want to see waves of pass rushers and getting a guy like Latu in here kind of prevents
it from being like a two-man show
or a three-man show or something like that. So overall, very exciting things here for Latu in
year one, obviously for this Colts pass rush. But coming up, guys, we have more needs, obviously,
on the board and day two is coming up tomorrow or actually today. Sorry, we're recording after
midnight here. So we're going to talk about some day two guys that have caught our eye that we
want the Colts to hear to target on this Friday. But first, when you're hiring for your small

All right, Jake, we're looking at day two of the NFL draft. This is where
Chris Ballard either swings and misses or swings and gets an all pro. There's nothing in between.
It's either all pro or a complete miss here on day two. There's quite a few interesting names
here. I think the ones that really catch my eye though are Cooper Dijon, Edgerin Cooper,
the linebacker from Texas A&M, Kool-Aid McKinstry, and then obviously a couple of wide receivers and AD Mitchell,
Keon Coleman, who's really catching your eye here on day two though, Jake.
Yeah. So you're obviously looking at, you would love to get a DB in this right away or a wide
receiver. The main positions we've been forecasting in the first
round all along. A.D. Mitchell, if you're getting A.D. Mitchell or Keon Coleman, if you're getting
these guys at 46, I'm all for it. I think that would be really, really good value. Obviously,
you and I were a bit uncomfortable with Mitchell at 15. He would have been a trade down candidate.
But if you're getting them in the middle of the second round,
that's totally cool with me.
Cooper DeGene is obviously the bell of the ball right now.
I don't expect him to even come close to 46 with the Colts.
He may even be a guy that a team tries to trade up for.
I would be totally cool with Kool-Aid McKinstry.
That would have been another trade-down in the first round candidate for me.
I think the let's get weird candidate in the first round candidate for me.
I think the let's get weird candidate of the day is Edron Cooper. I think pairing him with the top edge rusher in the class, or at least the Colts top edge rusher in the
class. Cooper's my top linebacker. Like if you're already going in on the on the defense like go heavy with it you
know what I mean like it's gonna suck not having a receiver in those first couple picks but if your
first two picks are lot to an Edrin Cooper like that's pretty nasty for your front seven yeah I
I will say I feel very comfortable saying that Gus Bradley's top linebacker in this class is
going to be Edrin Cooper I mean if you look at's top linebacker in this class is going to be Edrin Cooper.
I mean, if you look at all the linebackers in this draft, which one's the most Gus Bradley, the long arm guy who's just an attacker from the position, that's going to be Edrin Cooper.
So I don't think it's actually that weird.
I think if they get to pick 46 and Cooper's on the board, I think they would go that route. I don't think he's going to be there because I think Houston's in front of them
and Houston needs a run-defending linebacker because we have Jonathan Taylor
and Anthony Richardson here in Indy, so they kind of need a run defender
to counter that.
But yeah, Edron Cooper I think would be a fun pick at 46.
I know a lot of you guys in the comments, though, are really looking at wide receiver.
And luckily, again, Chris Ballard has talked about it quite a few times throughout this draft draft
process. He's talking, he's talked about the depth at wide receiver, not how it's not only
just around one position this year, but there's a lot of guys to watch. So I do think again,
Coleman and AD Mitchell obviously make a lot of sense. Troy Franklin, if you're looking for that
explosive guy over the top.
Jalen McMillan from Washington, I think, is a guy that they like as well.
Jalen Polk is as well from Washington, another really good Washington player.
You could even go with Javon Baker, Jacob Cowing, Malik Washington. I mean, there are so many wide receivers in this class where, look, the Colts don't necessarily need a starter.
It's not like Pierce was this horrendous player.
If they can just get another player that can get out there and play a little bit,
I think that'll be a win.
So again, a guy like McMillan there in round three or round four would be effective.
And then if you want to go a little bit higher, again,
like Aladdin McConkie or Troy Franklin or those types.
I know McConkie got flagged for a knee injury,
so I did want to put that out there for this question right here.
Ladd McConkie did get flagged for a bad knee injury,
so we'll see what happens there.
But I do think the Colts still have plenty of options at wide receiver
for everybody freaking out on how they didn't get up there.
I mean, they tried to trade up for, I think, Roma Dunze.
I'm pretty sure it was Roma Dunze.
It's just, look, when everyone's kind of yeah yeah yeah when when
everyone's taking quarterbacks that high they don't want to trade back because they can't miss
out on their 30 year old quarterback that they need to take in the top 10 so you know like it's
hard to get up there for a Dunzay especially because like then you're calling the Bears and
saying hey Bears we want to come up for you know a player and the Bears like we want to stay here
for a Dunzay so. So it's difficult there.
But they got their defensive player.
There's still a lot of wide receivers on the board.
There's still an Edger and Cooper on the board.
I think the Colts will be fine here on day two.
Yeah, most certainly.
And then Zach is going to have a day two, guys,
to watch coming out on horseshoehuddle.com in the morning.
But, no, I'm thrilled with the guys who are still on the board.
Again, some of these guys aren't going to get to the Colts,
but that just pushes other guys down the board.
Like, again, DeGene and McKinstry, even to some extent Mitchell,
we didn't expect them to be there in the second round.
Jackson Powers Johnson is an interesting one.'s it how do you feel about that one I I like it I mean he was my top center in the class
I had him as a top 20 grade in the class I know that some teams are not a fan of the personality
with him and and also with the uh because look he's 20 years old he's young young and and
part of him is being young you know and uh he has some i think he has an injury concern as well so
teams did flag a couple of those things but and he's a former defensive tackle that plays center
like a defensive tackle he's going to kill you on every single play i believe the colts have other
centers in mind that they're a fan of on late day
two, early day three. But I do think if Powers Johnson gets to you at 46 and you're looking to
the future where Ryan Kelly's likely not back in 2025, then yeah, sure, go get Powers Johnson.
I think that one makes a lot of sense too. Zach Frazier from West Virginia as well, if you want
to keep going into your offensive line. There's a lot of options at that position as well and we haven't mentioned safety yet either because
safety I think we all assume they're going to sign a safety after the draft but
when the Colts draft safeties they'd like to draft them young so Jaden Hicks I think makes
a ton of sense Cole Bishop makes a lot of sense Kalen Bullock makes a lot of sense
those are guys that I would also keep an eye on here on day two for the Colts. Yeah, Javon Bullard's my guy,
especially if, I mean, he's not the same as Cooper DeGene, obviously. He's not quite as athletic,
but I just love a really smart, instinctive, versatile safety. I just think he would fit
really well. Obviously a little bit below the
size thresholds, but I really love Bullard's game. And I think he'd fit in really well with
the Colts. They love those versatile guys, Kenny Moore, Julian Blackman, what they think Nick
Cross is. So I think he'd be a pretty decent fit as well, but I don't know, man, I'm just excited
for Friday. I'm excited. Well, it's Friday now. I'm just excited for friday i'm excited well it's friday now i'm
