What is up, friends?
This is Jake Arthur of HorseshoeHuddle.com.
Coming to you live down in Mobile, Alabama for the 76th Senior Bowl.
And this is a big week.
You know, for the Colts, not super competitive, not doing a whole lot in the end of the season as it relates to the playoffs.
So for a lot of you, you've been checked out and you've been in draft season for a while now.
So this is your time.
This is kind of officially the kickoff of draft season.
For the Colts, they love the Senior Bowl.
Every year they draft at least a couple guys from there.
Last year it was Laatu.
Laatu was the best player down here last year.
I was here.
I can vouch for that.
Tanner Bordellini was down here.
They drafted him.
Jalen Simpson, they drafted him.
He's not still with them, but that's a few guys they've drafted. Every year, it's at least a couple guys. So
there's a group down here that there's going to be at least a pair of them or so that are
going to become Colts here at the end of April. So very important week.
The Colts are very heavily represented as far as the coaching staff goes.
So their senior assistant defensive line coach, Matt Raich, he is the American team defensive coordinator.
So he's got a lot of guys he's going to have his eyes on this week.
Colts defensive quality control coach Brent Jackson is going to be Raich's DB coach.
So cornerbacks and safeties, Jackson is going to be able to have a good eye on them. Uh, the Colts Dungy defensive coaching fellow, Kalen Humphreys,
uh, he is coaching the American edge defenders. Uh, and then the Colts also have one guy on the
national side, uh, their assistant line coach, Chris Watt. He's going to be coaching the national
tight ends. Uh, he was actually the, I think the American offensive line coach last year.
So he's, they must like him down here, kind of cross pollinating a little bit.
So the Colts are going to be able to have their eyes on a lot of guys and all 32 teams
have the same information for the most part when it comes to an outside look at the senior
interviews and everything, but not everybody is represented on the coaching staff and the colts have a few guys at least here
so they're going to be able to get an even better look than most at primarily the american team
so practices will be on tuesday wednesday and thursday and then the game will come on saturday
i'll be down here reporting for you guys for the
practices. The game is kind of a formality. There could be some standout players, and it matters.
Last year, if you think about it, Evan Williams was a standout player, I think. It was either
Chris Abrams-Drain or Chow Smith-Wade. Both had some big plays. There are some guys who stand out in the game, and it really matters.
But teams are primarily looking at the practices.
And you'll see a lot of guys who are projected to be high picks.
If they stand out in the practices, they won't play in the game.
Last year, Liatu Liatu and Quinian Mitchell were probably the two best players.
Lad McConkie, the receivers as well, Malachi Corley.
There's these guys, if they perform well during the week,
they don't have anything else to prove when it comes to the actual game.
So these practices are super important.
Executive Director Jim Nagy gave a press conference Monday afternoon,
always does kind of kick off the week and give us a little more information.
So a few takeaways from what Nagy said.
He said this draft does not seem to be particularly strong up at the top.
It's got good depth, like you could find good players throughout each of the seven rounds.
But it's not like last year where there's a bunch of really strong players. He said he's talked to several teams who only have like eight, nine or 10 first round grades on players.
So you might see a lot of teams trying to get back.
Of course, with the Colts in the top 15.
They might fall into that.
They could get lucky to have one of their like blue chip guys follow them like lots who did last year.
But in general, this is nowhere near the top lots who did last year. But in general,
this is nowhere near the top heavy draft that last year was Nagy,
especially mentioned the quarterbacks as well.
He said none of the guys,
the quarterbacks that are down there probably would have even been in the top six of last year's quarterbacks.
So you look at cam war should do her Sanders,
Jalen Milrow,
those guys all near the top.
You know, none of them necessarily would have scratched the surface and been among that top group of quarterbacks last year.
He did say that's not really to disparage the quarterbacks this year, but he thinks last year was like a historic quarterback class and could go down as one of the best of all time in the NFL. So, yeah, the Colts, as always, pretty good candidate to perhaps trade down unless one
of their absolute favorite guys falls to them there at 14.
Nagy said this draft is really strong at running back and defensive line.
That's reflective in the senior bowl rosters as well
um someone asked him during the press conference that they had heard something
a team said there could be as many as like 30 running backs with draftable grades which is
wild considering uh running backs have been kind of devalued in recent years right and he agreed
he said you know roughly 30 draftable running backs
is about the number they probably had as well.
He shot, along with the defensive linemen and running backs,
Nagy really pointed out Ollie Gordon, Trevor Etienne, and Damian Martinez.
Gordon from Oklahoma State, Etienne from Georgia, and Martinez from Miami.
And as far as the edge defenders go, Mikeienne from Georgia, Martinez from Miami. And as far as the edge defenders go,
Mike Green from Marshall, undersized guy with a lot to prove, but he led the nation in sacks.
Donovan Ezeruka, I'm going to have to work on that name throughout the cycle,
from Boston College. Kyle Kennard from South Carolina and Josiah Stewart from Michigan.
So yeah, this, I don't know about you guys,
but I find myself this being one of the first years in a while for the Colts
where as far as what position to really prioritize in the draft,
I'm open to anything.
It's best player available now.
Obviously, we want them to get, you know, tied in.
Tyler Warren would be great.
You know, a corner or a safety like a Malachi Starks or Xavier Watts early would be great.
But really, I don't care.
At this point, you just want really good players.
Maybe at positions of value, you know, don't go out and get a running back.
Or, you know, at 14, it's probably okay to go ahead and you could get an interior offensive lineman.
Like looking back at it, revisionist history, you know,
number six back in 2018, Quentin Nelson's going to be a Hall of Famer,
but, you know, how valuable is that position?
There are a couple things where sure, maybe you don't reach
and get a guy who is going to be more impactful in the long term
in terms of the value they bring
to that position, what that position brings to the team. But overall, it was interesting.
We're going to get a much closer look at these guys here coming up in just a few hours, actually.
So that's kind of the table setting for you guys a little bit. Coming up, I'm going to talk about
some offensive players you guys need to be paying paying attention to keeping your ears out for,
as well as some defensive guys.
I already mentioned a few of them.
If you read my piece on horseshoehuddle.com yesterday,
but I'll I'm going to expand on that.
I'll be able to explain a little more than add some players to it.

All right, let's look into some of these offensive players
that we really want to keep our ears out for.
I'm going to go through each position group so that we're not just focusing on
a couple positions because if uh last year taught me anything it's that I shouldn't discount anyone
as to if the Colts will draft them like I I talked a lot to down here last year and but I never considered that the Colts would be drafting him. So I know better now.
I will not count anyone out as to if the Colts will draft them or not.
So let's look at some quarterbacks.
Jalen Milrow, Jackson Dart, and Taylor Elgersma.
So Milrow is kind of comparable to Anthony Richardson coming out in that super athletic player,
zero questions about that, but all the questions in the world as a passer when it comes to,
you know, accuracy, timing, reading the defense, all those things.
Now, Milrow is much more, is much further along than Richardson was, you know, been
a couple years starter, at least he's got more than the 13 starts under his belt. But people do have all the questions in the world about Milrow developing
into a passer. Now, Milrow did speak to the media yesterday. And I will say, as far as work ethic
and stuff goes, I'm sold on that kid. He really seems to embrace the work and I, I, I hate to compare guys, but where there
were questions about Richardson, you know, kind of doing all the little things that it
required to be the quarterback, like not that Richardson wasn't getting work done, but you
know, it's a lot different.
The work a quarterback has to do versus a defensive tackle
in preparation throughout the week. Um, it really seems like Melrose kind of lives and breathes
football. And, and he mentioned several times, you know, the work in the dark, you know, when no
one's looking, um, just the preparation throughout the week that goes into game time and not even
just that, but the off season as well. Uh seems like Milrow really, really embraces working on himself, working on
his game, getting better, collaborating with his coaches. It sounds like he was really close with
Tommy Reese when he was there at Alabama, now with the Cleveland Browns. So Milrow is very
interesting. By no means a guy you draft and start right away, but I think he's worth a day two pick for the Colts or really any team to develop and let them work on their craft. And if he's as hard of a worker as he says he is, then you could probably get something out of them down the line. Jackson Dart is probably the quarterback you guys have asked Zach and I about
the most whenever we've talked draft.
Ole Miss guy, he kind of falls into that classic thing recently of a quarterback
with a lot of arm talent with a big arm who can make special plays happen you know keep things
alive but there's questions about accuracy timing and reading defenses like all the physical gifts
to be like a freak but the routine things just you know being able to make the layups and
you know it doesn't necessarily have all the attributes of that,
like a pocket passer would have.
So dark kind of falls into that.
Him and Milrow.
I think this is going to be an interesting week and I think it's going to be
important for people to have little patience because quarterbacks down here,
the first day or so there's three practices.
Mind you the first day or so the quarterbacks never look good.
They're adjusting to new pass catchers. They don't really have chemistry yet with these guys,
and the accuracy and timing just isn't necessarily there. So we're going to need a little bit of
patience. Quarterbacks are ones you're really going to want to see what they look like on
day three of practice, and the game kind of does matter for them a little bit because you want to see what they look like on day three of practice. And the game kind of does matter for
them a little bit because you want to see if their chemistry with some of these pass catchers has
grown. But overall, it's going to be interesting for them. I would love to avoid them being
punching bags immediately. I mean, we're going to report on them accurately, but give these guys a
little bit of patience and don't just assume that they're going to report on them accurately, but give these guys a little bit of patience
and don't just assume that they're going to fall into all of the issues people already know they have.
Again, because quarterbacks early in the senior bowl, every year they do not really look good.
They don't necessarily hit the ground running.
This other guy I mentioned, Taylor Elgrisma, is from Canada.
He is a guy they've had their eyes on for a little bit. It seems like the draft community that already has like a huge board
put together knows about this guy and thinks that he's pretty talented. So I'm pretty excited to get
my eyes on him, see what he's all about. Running back, like Nagy mentioned, very, very deep this year.
Ollie Gordon, Trevor Etienne, Damian Martinez, Brashard Smith, Marcus Yarns, and Donovan Edwards.
If you guys, that could be like really, really cool third down backs, as Nagy put it.
So Gordon Etienne and Martinez, those are, you know, three down guys. Gordon and Martinez are
both much bigger guys. He said Gordon measured in at 230. Martinez
was like 240-something, but really mentioned Brashad Smith, Marcus Yards, and Edwards as guys
who could really, really contribute in the passing game as well. So that's what the Colts really need.
I think especially with how deep this running back class is this year,
the Colts are going to upgrade at running back. It's going to be Jonathan Taylor and like Taylor may still dominate the backfield touches as he should,
but they need to get a capable third down running back in there. As good as Jonathan Taylor is,
and I've advocated for his entire career, the Colts can upgrade on their passing downs when it comes to running back.
I do love Jonathan Taylor, but he's not the best blocker in the world, and he is not the
best pass catcher in the world.
If the Colts can grab someone who, like, that's been their bread and butter throughout their
career, I think that would be incredibly valuable for their offense.
Looking to wide receiver, not a super rich group this year. A couple guys must
have backed out. There's the kid from Stanford and Ole Miss that are no longer on the roster,
but look at Jack Beck is a good player. I was listening to a podcast in the last couple of
weeks previewing the Senior Bowl, and someone said, you know, if there's going
to be a Puka Nakua this year, Jack Beck is probably the candidate. Nakua is going to be the latest guy
for a few years now of people wanting to find the next and basically the diamond in the rough, the
wide receiver you can find on day three, who just automatically becomes like a dominant receiver.
That doesn't just happen every year. but jack back apparently is this year's candidate
uh jaylen royals from out west uh and ted johnson those are both kind of smaller faster deep ball
guys um wide receiver is one of the only positions this year where if i'm the colts i don't care if
they don't draft it i think think they're fine in their receiver.
I mean, we know they're three strong,
and you've got to assume A.D. Mitchell is going to take some sort of step forward.
This was a very humbling experience for him as a rookie.
So they're three strong at receiver already, three guys.
I have no questions about being starters.
And then, again, if A.D. Mitchell can give you literally anything, that's great. And they could have four capable players. If he, if Mitchell
could just play to a wide receiver four level, then they're cool. Plus we got to imagine they're
going to give a facelift to the tight end group. So I don't care if they add a receiver or not.
I really don't think they need it tight end
though yes hell yes they do um harold fannin jr is probably the the top tight end down here from
bowling green uh big receiving not big but a receiving tight end about 6 3 230 ish he there's
no questions about him as like a pass catcher and a move tight end, like the classic guy who's been in vogue for the last 15, 20 years.
But how can he hold up as a blocker?
Because no matter how good you are as a, you know, those Joker tight ends,
if you can't play in line at all and you get just ragdolled all the time,
that is going to put a cap on how much you can be used.
You look at like Jimmy Graham, like Jimmy Graham was a special player who couldn't
block his way out of a paper bag. And I mean, he got to play a lot because he offered a special
skill and he had that basketball background. You have to be a special receiving tight end
in order to overcome being able to not block basically so Fannin is one to
watch Colts offensive line assistant offensive line coach Chris Watt will be his direct position
coach as the national team tight end coach so they'll be able to get plenty of intel there
Mason Taylor from LSU that is Jason Taylor's son, who's got a good NFL lineage there. And then Terrence Ferguson
from Oregon. Those are a couple other tight ends to watch. I like this group better than I did last
year's group of tight ends for sure. Even discounting Brock Bowers, like take Bowers
and Jatavian Sanders out of it. I thought tight end kind of fell off a cliff after that last year. I think
it's definitely got more depth this year. When you look at offensive linemen, several guys that
you look at, I'm okay if they get an offensive tackle. I'm okay if they draft an interior guy.
Again, I do not mind. I think they kind of need a little bit of everything. Some guys I'm looking at, offensive tackles, you got Jonah Savana, Armand Membo, and Ariante Ursaring.
Interior guys, Clay Webb, Emery Jones, Marcus Bowe from Purdue, and Willie Lampkin.
So there's some guys here who I think could really move the needle.
Obviously, at right guard, that's their big question mark.
Do you bring back Will Fries?
I think you definitely do um but braden smith do you cut bait there because you could free up over 15 million dollars
because smith is due to make about 20 million dollars this year and i think that is unrealistic
uh given the current state of things so the colts might have one or two needs on the offensive line
as it stands going into free agency.
So going out and getting a young stud offensive lineman certainly couldn't hurt.
That's the cheaper route to go to get a good player on a rookie contract.
So we'll see what they do there. Coming up next, we're going to talk defense.
The Colts got them a new defensive coordinator, and we know they need a lot of work.

All right, so just how we did the offense, we're going to go through each position group
of the defense here and point out a few guys that make a lot of sense especially for the colts for the edge group mike green again
kind of an undersized guy but super productive uh 17 sacks now he's from marshall so people are
wondering about his size his play strength but also the level of competition. Is he going to be able to do that to guys from the Power Five, basically?
Is he going to be able to do that against guys from the big schools?
There's going to be some good competition.
The offensive tackle group isn't as good as it was last year,
but there were some really, really, really good tackles last year.
But it's still pretty decent, enough to where if Green shows out this week,
I think he'll look pretty legit in the eyes of a lot of NFL teams. Kyle Kennard from South
Carolina, Josiah Stewart from Michigan, and Donovan Azaruka from Boston College. Those are
some guys to keep an eye on. There's also some guys who are not here down in mobile
or they backed out that would be big time players for the Colts but Edge isn't the biggest need
again you think Lotsu is probably going to take a step forward he will probably be the starter next
year Quidipe is there but he's only got one more year left on his deal it's that fifth year option
Dio Adango is a free agent.
Samson Edgucon, we mentioned that it makes a lot of sense for him to be a salary cut candidate.
Tyquan Lewis is a bit of an older player and his contract is dwindling down as well. So
they may not have like super immediate needs, but they're going to need edge help in the next year. So get ahead of the
problem. Get someone, you know, like a Mike Green, for example, you get him in like round two
and you do still have questions about like his play strength and stuff. Let him be a rotational
player that kind of gets acclimated to the NFL before you truly need him next year.
The Colts always kind of have that balancing act of, you know,
the coaches want players who could play right now,
but the front office wants guys with kind of a long-term vision.
So it's always kind of a push and pull between that.
The defensive tackle group, though,
this is a group of guys that could play right away.
Two of them that have really caught my eye, Walter Nolan from Ole Miss and Deion Walker from UNC. Nolan is going to wind up being one of my
dudes in this draft, I'm pretty sure. I don't see many people usurping him as one of my favorite
defensive tackles. One of my new things I told myself I was going to prioritize this year was play strength.
Because a big lesson I learned, and I don't want to let just one miss determine this for me,
but I really didn't like Jared Burse last year.
I knew he was athletic.
I knew he was strong.
But when I watched his tape, I was like, he's fine.
Like, where is the consistent production? I just
didn't love him. I think I had him fourth, you know, Latu was my top at Chop Robinson and their
Dallas Turner. So Jared Bruce, I thought it was fine that he was drafted in the first round, but
I was not going to want the Colts to get him. And obviously he balled out for the Rams this year. And you look at him like play strength translates pretty much no matter what,
like if you're strong, you're strong,
but he also had the athleticism to go with it.
And he's put it together more in the NFL than he had yet at Florida state.
And just looks like a prime defensive rookie of the year candidate.
So I missed on Jared Burse. And one of the reasons was I didn't really care as much about his play
strength, mixing with the athleticism to equal really explosive player and to actually put it
all together in the NFL. So with Walter Nolan, not going to make that mistake. Dude is strong as an ox, very athletic, very quick
and fast. Probably needs to work out a bit more of a pass rush plan, but he's an interior guy.
Would be the perfect situation for the Colts actually, because they have DeForest Buckner
and Grover Stewart here already. You can rotate this guy in. Is he going to be less productive than what you've had the
last few years with Raekwon Davis, Adetami Adebware, Eric Johnson, Taven Bryan? It can't
get much less productive than what you've got. You can at least get a super high ceiling rookie
in here to rotate between two stud players and learn from those stud players.
Nolan's guy is probably going to go day one,
and I would be perfectly fine with the Colts getting him there in the middle of the first round.
Linebacker is a pretty decent group this year.
Demetrius Knight Jr. from South Carolina,
Jack Kaiser from Notre Dame, and Shamar James from Florida are a few down here in Mobile to keep an eye on. Now, I am pretty interested to see if Lou Anarumo is going to have a different eye for linebackers.
With Chris Ballard, it's been smaller guys with a big wingspan who are athletic, basically. Just really rangy, fast, but smaller and lengthier linebackers.
The two perfect linebackers that ever came through for Chris Ballard were Darius Leonard,
Darius Shaq Leonard, and Bobby Okereke.
They never quite replicated what they had with those guys but that was like
the perfect Chris Fowler built in a lab linebacker now and Aruma has had some success with these are
still kind of explosive guys but they're bigger you know they're more around 240 pounds uh closer
to that than the guys who are at 220 230 pounds pounds. So Demetrius Knight to me is a slightly
bigger version of Zaire Franklin, uh, but more explosive and with much better instincts and
coverage. Uh, so that could equal out to be a very, very good player. Uh, I'd be willing to,
to roll the dice on that. You, you know, you make desire your Mike linebacker. You keep him there. You bring in Demetrius Knight to be your Will linebacker.
At some point in the next couple years, you feel you need a new
Mike linebacker, then there's your guy waiting for you right there.
Ballard has done a really good job of having the foresight to get
linebackers into Indianapolis to develop and then eventually
start. I think this one's staring them right in the face if they want to make that move.
Cornerback, Azariah Thomas from Florida State.
This is a guy who basically, if they want to roll the dice and get, you know,
repentance for Juju Brents, they want that still thin kind of player,
but hopefully without all the injury issues.
I think Thomas is their guy.
He's a big, lengthy guy, willing to be a tackler,
which Brents and Kenny Moore are their best tackling cornerbacks,
but Brents is never on the field.
Thomas is willing to mix it up and be physical.
He's aggressive when it comes to
attacking the ball when it's in the air uh but he's got a lot of the same questions about like
brent says when it comes to mobility and like maybe the fluidity of changing direction and
everything like makeup speed and all that but those those big long physical corners the whole
point is that they don't let guys get by them they out physical the
receiver and kind of absorb them and shut them down a little bit and when juju brits is on the
field i think he does a great job of doing that like when brits is on the field you don't worry
about how he's performing because he plays really well and so i think azariah thomas is another
shot for them to have a cornerback like that.
But again, hopefully without all the injury concerns.
Maxwell Harrison, another guy to look for from Kentucky.
Brandon Adams, Trey Amos.
The safety group is not as strong down here as it would have been.
It certainly, I don't think, has necessarily the guys that they did last year.
Billy Bowman Jr. is one guy to watch.
You know, Xavier Watts was going to be here, but with Notre Dame season running so late and getting
to the national championship, he's not going to be here. But Billy Bowman Jr. is one guy. I am
excited to learn more about these safeties, though. I got a huge dose of reality when it came to
safeties last year because I kind of thought the same thing. I was like, yeah, there's just kind of some guys.
Cam Kitchens was always my top guy, though, and he looked really good.
Wound up being a good player down here.
Evan Williams wound up being a good player for the Packers.
So I'm excited to get my heart broken again and fall in love with some of these safeties
that the Colts ultimately may not draft.
Because that's kind of always how it works when it comes to the DVs.
I think safety is the position that I'm most comfortable evaluating.
And I think it's got my best hit rate.
But I don't know that Chris Ballard and I see eye to eye when it comes to safety.
So they don't often take the safeties that I like.
But I'll definitely be thrilled to share with you guys who I am kind of draft crushing on down here. So that is it. I'm going to have
practice notes from you guys on Horseshoe Huddle every day. I'll hop on the pod and let you guys
know every day what I thought about everything that went on. Again, practice is Tuesday, Wednesday,
and Thursday.
The game is coming on Saturday.
