Starting point is 00:00:00 The Indianapolis Colts faced their first major injury test of the season as Alec Pierce is week to week with a heel injury. Let's get to it. You are Locked-on Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Welcome to Locked-on Colts. I'm Zach Hicks. That's Jake Arthur, and today's episode is brought to you by GameTime. Down the GameTime app, create account, and use code Locked-on for $20.
Starting point is 00:00:36 off of your first purchase. On today's show, we are purely talking about the Colts offense because we don't have the mindset to talk about the defense right now. We do have some news and notes, obviously, with the offense, so it is a very topical show. We're going to talk about this wide receiver room and just the past catchers in general going forward with the Alec Pierce injury. So to conclude today's show, we're going to talk about just how we would divvy out the snap share, the target share, how certain guys should be used. We're going to go through all that in the final segment. Segment two, we're going to talk about the Colts newest wide receiver, Darius Sladen, his relationship with Daniel Jones, what he brings to the offense and how he can
Starting point is 00:01:12 kind of be a poor man's Alec Pierce, so to speak. And then we're going to talk about Alex Pierce here to kick off the show. So Alec Pierce re-agravated his heel, ankle injury, however you want to label it, re-agravated that injury against the Kansas City Chiefs in the first quarter. And obviously it had a pretty big impact on the Colts passing game throughout the rest of that game. But for Pierce, they're opting to try to rehab it instead of go to another surgery at this moment. We'll see what that means going forward. But I think injury reserve is certainly on the table. They have them listed as week to week as up right now. So that could mean anywhere from back in two weeks to out for the year. You know, we never know with this Colts team. So we'll
Starting point is 00:01:55 see how the rehab process go. But a very big blow to the Colts wide receiver room, right, Jake? Yeah, this one's really tough. I know. especially when it comes to rehabbing it rather than going for the surgery. It's basically completely dependent on how this thing heals. And I'm not a doctor and I'm not trying to sabotage the season by any means. But I'm kind of of the thought that for this guy's well-being, Pierce probably needs that. If surgery is an option, then that probably is the most appropriate thing to do.
Starting point is 00:02:31 Now, it doesn't sound like that's what they're doing. going to do. But this is a problem that started for him at the end of the 2014 season. Played through it. Played well. I mean, and then he played all the way through 2025 with it. I don't know, man. Like, is this just a can that they're going to continually kick down the road? Like, it's something he had to have surgery on this off season. And now it's a potential option again. Like, it sucks. But like, they just probably need to do whatever. is necessary to take care of this thing because we also don't know that just letting it heal and rehabbing it is going to solve it.
Starting point is 00:03:10 Yeah. But like you mean, or like you said, this could be something where he's out, you know, a few weeks or all the way up to the end of this season. I know initial reports basically say this is something where midseason is like probably the best outcome. So what does that mean? He misses like five four or five games. they haven't put him on IR yet although I think that at the very least you know putting him on IR
Starting point is 00:03:39 designated to return is probably necessary just to free up a roster spot you know to make room for Dary Slayton today they placed Michael Clemens on IR so it doesn't mean they can't do it with Pierce but they might still be very much in that fact-finding mode still but yeah this one's really tough but I know they don't want to already waste the season with not having this guy and he probably really wants to prove himself after the contract and it's like this is all just so complicated and muddy because of what this season means you know if if they had time to have guys injured or they weren't in such dire straits it would be one thing but jobs are on the line, and I think everyone wants to play through whatever they can.
Starting point is 00:04:33 But this just, this doesn't feel good. You know what I mean? This just feels like a problem they're avoiding. Potentially. I mean, I'm not a doctor, and I don't really want to speculate too much on any of that. You know, we'll see ultimately what the best case is going forward. I will say in the NFL, regardless of team situation, every single game and every season is dire for every team. Maybe it hasn't been for the cults for the last decade, and that's part of the problem.
Starting point is 00:04:59 But in the NFL, your career just doesn't last long if you're missing time. So I don't think it's just because of the Colts season that Pierce is feeling the pressure to get back out there. I just think this is how these guys are wired in a lot of ways. Now, sometimes the team- He's been doing this since 2024. Right, right. And we look at like Michael Pippin Jr., right, all the stuff he fought through the last couple years of the Colts. And he's already missing time with the Steelers.
Starting point is 00:05:20 He missed almost all of training camp and he already missed game two for them. So it's just kind of the nature of playing the sport at this point. But yeah, we'll see. I think obviously the Colts for the time being should put him on injured reserve and then reevaluate him after the four weeks. So I don't know what the hesitation is to put him on IR. I think that should just be the next move they make. But again, we'll see within the next couple of days if they do make that move.
Starting point is 00:05:46 I think more so the more interesting aspect of this right now is just how this impacts the Colts offense. Because we saw on Sunday, now I don't think the Chiefs were going to give up much anyway over the top because they were bringing so much pressure and getting up and challenging these wide receivers at the line of scrimmage. But when you have Alec Pierce, there is that extra added threat to it, right? Like Pierce is one of the best receivers in football the last couple years at beating press man coverage, at beating single high coverage. Like, he makes it so you have to sit back a little bit and respect that deep ball.
Starting point is 00:06:17 The second he left that game, the Chiefs were getting in wide receivers faces all game long. And if it weren't for Josh Downs, just being the always open guy. that he is, the Colts would not have moved the football through the air because Lequan Treadwell, Keenan Allen, Tyler Warren, those guys were not winning in man coverage at all. So I'm curious to see how teams approach the Colts going forward because if you go man coverage, the Colts clearly have one guy who will make you pay. But if they start bracketing that one player, Keenan Allen and Laquan Treadwell and Tyler Warren are not winning in man coverage at this point. It's just not happening. So I do think that this is a pretty big impact on the Colts going forward.
Starting point is 00:06:59 There are ways around it, which we'll certainly talk about. But as of right now, like the loss of Alec Pierce, I would put him as one of the five most integral players to success this season for the Colts, higher than most, like skill players even on all, like higher than Tyler Warren, higher than Josh Downs, honestly, just because of what he does to defenses. So I do think Pierce was one of the most integral players to the team this year and not having him for an extended period, it's going to have an impact on the offense for sure. Yeah, and I mean, we could put our money where our mouth is on that. When we did rank him very, very high up on the list, when we did our most crucial
Starting point is 00:07:36 Colts in the offseason, he was right near the top of the list. I think this absence really kind of shines a light on the fact that Pierce may be a bit underrated. I don't want to call him an elite receiver, but I certainly think he is one of the the better receivers in the NFL. You set it yourself there. The ability to beat press man, I think only the best receivers are able to do that consistently.
Starting point is 00:08:04 I mean, his highlights are riddled with wins against Derek Stingley and Patrick Sertan in like the best corners, Sauce Gardner before he was a Colt. And very sure-handed, the ability to stretch defenses vertically, that is almost unmatched. I mean, two years in a row leading the league in yards per catch, contested catches. Like the only thing that's not a well-documented part of his game really
Starting point is 00:08:34 is like the shorter underneath stuff. But everything else very much is. So I think he's going to be a missed part of the offense. He's got a lot of gravity. You know, he always requires attention over the top, not just the corner, but the safety. He forces defensive passes. interference and it just it requires defenses to respect what the Colts are doing and then when he's
Starting point is 00:08:59 not out there they're like all right well it's Jonathan Taylor that we need to focus on these other guys we could just kind of mug at the line a little bit and just they're not getting pressure how no matter how well they do or separation no matter how well they do so it's certainly just I just think of the word gravity when I think of Alec Pierce because this this has a lot of trickle down to it not being out there. So I certainly think this is something they're going to have to replace him in the aggregate. Never more than now are they going to have to do this. We see our receiver for as a basketball team type thing because they just lost their
Starting point is 00:09:36 their top guy. They're Jalen Brunson. They're they're Donovan Mitchell. You know what I mean? So they're going to have to figure something out now where, you know, there's some, a couple vertical threats on this team, but they are nowhere near the total. package type of player that Pierce is. Yeah, and speaking of those potential vertical threats on the team,
Starting point is 00:09:58 Darius Slayton was signed to the roster, a free agent who was just recently released by the New York Giants and more of a cap-saving move than anything else because they need to get cap-compliant before the season starts. So we're going to talk about that addition to the Colts and how he can potentially be a poor man's version of Alec Pierce in this basketball team offense that we're talking about. David Harrison here at the Lockdown Commanders podcast.
Starting point is 00:10:21 talk about butcher box. I'm someone who's always trying to make sure I'm getting enough protein. For me, that gets a whole lot easier when I've got a freezer full of the good stuff, and I'm not stuck trying to figure out what to do for dinner. And I like having that quality protein ready to go, whether it's for the whole family or it's just for myself so I can avoid that dreaded takeout order. And butcher box delivers 100% grass-fed beef, organic chicken, wild-caught seafood, and more, all source to standards they can actually tell you about they've already done the work.

We talked about the loss of Alec Pierce in the first segment, Jake. Now let's talk about Darius Slayden, a player who, similarly to Alec Pierce, has operated on the vertical plane for most of his NFL. NFL career. Even last year, majority of his routes that he ran were post routes and go routes.
Starting point is 00:12:57 I think he ranked in the top 25 and go routes run among all wide receivers last year. And in the top 12 in post routes, number 11 last year in post routes was Alec Pierce. So Darius Slayton, very similar route distribution, much less success in recent seasons, though. Now, part of that can be quarterback play, right? The Giants had had more of a revolving door at quarterback even than the Colts, which is weird to say because the Giants dealt with some injuries last year at quarterback position. Heck, their quarterback for this year is already out for the season. So they've had a bad run of quarterback luck. And I think Slayton's numbers did, you know, they could
Starting point is 00:13:32 kind of fall off as a result of that. But I do think where Pierce excels, Slayton is a little bit lesser in those regards. Like Pierce is so good at just going up and winning those 50-50 balls. Like getting his hands on him and winning those hands catches and then coming down with the football, Sladen has the speed and he has the ability to test defenses over the top, but once it gets a little bit congested out there, once it gets a little bit contested, it's a little bit more of a struggle for him to bring that football down. So I think that's where you see the big drop off. But I do think he can be in a sense like it would be like having like you have like a Kyle Corver type of three point shooter on your basketball team, right? A guy who is just knocked down every time the ball gets out to him, right? And it's a huge part of your offense.
Starting point is 00:14:15 it's like going from that to like a Max Struz type play. I don't know. Like what's a better example would be, but it's like, yeah, like a guy who can hit him when he's hot, but it's not going to always be as consistent. Like he can do the things that Pierce was asked to do in recent seasons, but it's just not going to be at the same level or consistency of Pierce. But in terms of options you could have got to replace this role in your offense in week two of the regular season, it's about as good as it gets.
Starting point is 00:14:42 Like, again, I'm not saying that he is some hidden genie. like, oh my gosh, the Colts have their next starter for the next five years. He's not that. Like, he's a fringe, like, wide receiver three in this league at this point. But honestly, to find a player who's a fringe wide receiver three on the open market who's not even 30 yet, like I know he's 29, but 29 years old who has a connection and rapport with your quarterback, I mean, it's as good as you can possibly hope for at this point, right? Yeah, there wasn't much else out there.
Starting point is 00:15:11 I literally think we mentioned Darius Layton as an option on the point. post-game show on Sunday night. So this is certainly the type of player where if you're going to have to go get somebody, this is probably it. Now he's going to be a little bit frustrating. He is pretty much every year of his career, for the most part, had a drop rate above 10%. Not a contested catch guy, like you said.
Starting point is 00:15:35 Those numbers are pretty low as well. But he can win deep. Like he can get open deep. And, you know, he has, you know, from 29, to midway through 2024 when Daniel Jones was released by the Giants, those guys played together. They were drafted in the same draft class. So they've got like four or five years of experience together.
Starting point is 00:15:55 That's at least good. That will help Slate and acclimate sooner, I think. So he's not going to be as involved as Pierce was, obviously. Like I think he'll, they're very much just going to have hogs in the machine now. Because really Josh Downs is the only constant. that's going to be left. You know, Ashton Doolin is still working his way back. Keenan Allen is a role player, as we know,
Starting point is 00:16:24 but that's going to have to grow a little bit, unfortunately. We didn't really want to see him have a huge role, but now what are they going to do? They haven't called Nick Westbrook Akina up yet. They probably are going to want to do that. They may have to do Anthony Gould again, not just for returnability, but like if you're going to involve Josh down so much you don't really have a backup planet slot so I don't know what they're going to do there
Starting point is 00:16:51 Dionne Berks baby get ready we'd rather you be in there I'm with it we'll talk more about him in segment three but yeah I I'm with it when it comes to Dionne Berks for sure but Darius Slayton and in general just kind of getting back to the task at hand here this was a a good move it's it's a necessary one they had to make and he was probably best case scenario You just need to have someone present who still can put the thought in the secondary that, hey, this guy can stretch us. This guy can be a threat if we let him get behind us. A big play is going to come. They just have to have that because the half court offense is not going to work. We just keep making so many basketball references, but the half court offense is not going to work long term.
Starting point is 00:17:41 it's just not they're going to key in on jonathan taylor you don't have elite separators outside of josh downs to make that work so you just are going to have to have some of these guys i think slayton is now going to be your lead vertical threat until pierce gets back luckily dueling can do a bit of it as well whenever he gets back um but yeah slayton is going to have to play a rather large role probably one bigger than they would want just because they have to have that guy out there. And it can't be a thing where it's like, okay, if he's out there, they know it's going deep because they have to leave a little bit of mystery out there as well.
Starting point is 00:18:22 You know, they can't just be so super predictable. Yeah. But yeah, this move in general, I do like it. I'm just kind of curious how quickly they can get him up to speed. Yeah, I'm hoping it's as early as this week because they need a guy who can log some steps in and really hit that vertical ball. And again, just test the Texans over the top a little bit. and make them have to turn their heads, you know, because the reason why Laquan Treadwell got so open in overtime is because I think Daniel Jones was the only one who had faith that he was going to, you know, be there.
Starting point is 00:18:51 And credit to Daniel Jones for throwing such a great ball down the field to him, but you're not going to get many opportunities like that with Treadwell. I respect what he's been doing, right? He's been working hard in each of these games, but there are limitations there. And then with Keenan Allen, there's limitations and there's not working hard. So we'll talk about that in the next segment too. So they needed a guy who, again, can come in here, can run in the four-three. like low four fours, whatever it is, has a history of catching the ball deep. And again, like, it's not going to bring as much gravity as Alec Pierce, but there's going to be
Starting point is 00:19:19 some gravity with him. And there really wasn't going to be that with a treadwell or an Allen or, I mean, even with Dionne Burks, like, the Colts don't even trust him to run real receiver routes right now. So they're not going to get him in there to bring any kind of gravity. So, again, in terms of what they were looking for, this is the best possible option. does this is this some season saving move like is this even like on the level of dontrell in men back in 2018 no like it's it's not going to be that level of capability and consistency uh but it is a move that helps you know like hopefully we don't have to have as much half court offense is what
Starting point is 00:19:57 they had against the chiefs like there are ways to make that work for you and we'll talk about that here in just a moment but overall you have to have some semblance of a deep shot of the three-pointer right and so that's what darius slayton going to bring to this team. So Slayton is in the mix. Hopefully he can get out there and play. I mean, even if it's not like a starting role on Sunday, like I want to see his snap chair be up around like mid-40s at least, even the 50s. Like he went through a whole off season and training camp as well. So this isn't even like a Keenan Allen thing where he needs to ramp up. Like he should be good to go. He's only had two weeks off or three weeks off, whatever it's been.
Starting point is 00:20:33 So hopefully they can get him out there on Sunday for some sort of a role. But speaking of roles, let's talk about just the overall rotation going forward, what the snap share should look like, what the target share should look like, because this wide receiver room is going to have a major facelift without Alec Pierce down the stretch. Welcome to your most rewarding NFL season ever, only on Fanduel. How rewarding are we talking? We're talking more rewarding than a touchdown with time expiring. More rewarding than an 18-point comeback. Maybe even more rewarding than an O-Liaming catching a touchdown. I know, it's crazy. But this season, Fand-Wing is making the excitement go beyond what happens on the field with the all-new Fanduel Rewards Club,

For example, this week, the Colts earning no respect, which probably do. The Texans at Lucas Oil Stadium are two and a half point favorites, despite themselves being 0.2, with a point over under a 43.5, which seems astute because I don't. think this is going to be some sort of offensive explosion. A touchdown with time expiring is tough to beat. An 18 point comeback, even better. And if an offensive lemming catches a touchdown, well, I mean, that's pretty much football Nirvana right there. So just to keep in mind, two players that are currently injured, Alec Pierce, and Ashton Doolan are both week to week. So that could mean, again, anywhere as early as next week,
Starting point is 00:23:26 and as late as never, right, when it comes to it. That is the most broad thing that you can say about a certain player on your team. So week to week, we have to just assume they're out for an indefinite amount of time as of right now. So that leaves the healthy receivers on the Colts roster as Josh Downs, Keenan Allen, LaQuan Treadwell, Darius Sladen, and Dionne Burks. No real superstar in that bunch, no real star in that bunch. But there is a clear guy who should be getting a majority of the targets, and that is obviously Josh Downs. Josh Downs, who was coming off a game where he had seven receptions for 72 yards against the
Starting point is 00:24:00 Kansas City Chiefs. The Colts passing offense aside from throwing it to Josh Downs was not nearly as effective outside of the one big shot to Laquan Treadwell. So downs did make up a majority of the wide receiver past catching production. And I think that's going to have to be the case going forward. Like if I'm the Colts and I know that we have seen an uptick this season because of the injuries and because of no Michael Pittman Jr. But I think you have to have downs as Snapshare be a well above 90% going forward.
Starting point is 00:24:29 Like the only time I wouldn't have on the field is like some of your 13 personnel stuff where you need to have a blocking receiver out there with the three tight ends just to have all capable. bodies out there blocking. So maybe he's off on those things, but any other personnel grouping, he should not be off the field. He is just too good to have off the field. He's your guy that you rely on against man coverage. He's your guy you rely on third down in general, right? He's the guy you're scheming up and drawing up plays four. Like, Josh Down should not have targets below 10 the rest of the way, in my opinion, unless you're like are just killing a team and you're running at the clock late. But his target share should be above 30% the rest of the way. He needs to be
Starting point is 00:25:08 treated like the best weapon on this team. And the thing is with a player like Josh Downs, it's not like Alec Pierce, right? Where force-feeding him the ball will lead to some contest to catch stuff. Josh Downs is always open. That is always the thing with him. So sometimes there are going to be plays where like, look, just stare him down the whole time. He'll be open. Don't worry.
Starting point is 00:25:25 It might not be the biggest gain, but he is the guy that you should be targeting. So I think that's the first thing you've got to throw out there. And then the rest of these guys just kind of make up his wingmen, you know, like Dary Slayton being the guy who can run vertical. Keenan Allen, once he gets into football shape, working on the intermediate and middle, in like low range of the outcomes here. Lequan Treadwell, some blocking and some, you know,
Starting point is 00:25:49 some effort stuff that we like from the Quine Treadwell. Dionne Burke, some of the gadgety stuff we saw. Like, the rest of these guys can fit into some other roles. But in my opinion, when it comes to the wide receiver room, Josh Downs needs to be the guy. Like there shouldn't be any more like playing around with it. Study how other teams use Pooka Nakuwa Amundrae St. Brown, like, I mean, I know those are like thicker wide receivers,
Starting point is 00:26:11 but they're not like contested catch like outside the numbers wide receivers, right? They're guys who operate and do a lot of their damage in between the numbers. Study exactly how those guys are used and use Josh Downs in a similar way because he is the best weapon they have going forward. Yeah, without a doubt, I think he needs to see the vast majority of not only the targets, but just the snaps in general. I think the next guy that we're going to see, see the most action is probably tread well. until Doolin comes back.
Starting point is 00:26:39 Because I think Doolin when he is back, which we're going to need some more clarification on that. Hopefully when we talk to Shane on Wednesday. But whenever Doolin comes back, it'll probably be downs and Doolin. But until then, I got to imagine it's Treadwell, which he does have this like just sneaky vertical ability. I don't know where it comes from. It's never been really his best part of his game.
Starting point is 00:27:01 But it's apparently his calling card with the Colts. because all the slants and everything with him and Keenan Allen. I'm not really into it. He's running those routes better than Keenan Allen right now. So, I mean, I would be running those routes better than Keenan at the moment. But, you know, it's, I can't wait for Keenan to hopefully come around. You know, he's 34.
Starting point is 00:27:23 So hopefully there is a coming around for him. But yeah, I wouldn't broaden his role much more. I think you just basically, instead of it being Pierce, it's Treadwell for the time being. You know, I don't think you have to beef up Keenan Allen's usage a whole lot more. Well, and Slaten too, right? And Darius Slate and he gets more active. Absolutely. Until they get him really rolling.
Starting point is 00:27:50 But Dionne Burks is someone I like, now Treadwell is going to have a role. Slate and they're going to, you know, keep him ascending. But I wouldn't just keep Burks on the back burner. Like I like the fact they got him a little more involved in week two. Keep that up. See what that really results in because, you know, he's playing some special teams right now. So he's going to stay active because of that. But get him involved as a receiver a little bit more.
Starting point is 00:28:19 Don't just do like bubble screens and gadgety stuff with him. Like, see what he can do for you as a real receiver. Because it's this kind of just bonus points right here. You know, you've got a seventh round rookie who, you know, his ability, his physical ability is higher than that. Like, if the dude pans out to be pretty good, then, like, this could help solve a very big issue for your offense right here. And then I also, if it calls for it,
Starting point is 00:28:47 I really would like to see Nick Westbrook Aquina involved, at least for this week, a guy that's been in the system all offseason. Anthony Gould, after the latest punt return thing, I'm super cool if they just let him chill on the practice squad. But yeah, with Nick Westbrook, Keena, I do want to see him at some point this year. There's probably no better time than now until Dary Slayton is really caught up. But yeah, this is going to be very interesting to see how they do things.
Starting point is 00:29:16 I do have a sneaking suspicion that because it's Shane and because he has a strong relationship with Keenan Allen, that Keenan probably will get a significant role. I do think his numbers probably will tick up here. his usage, I just don't think it should. Yeah. You know, he didn't magically become younger or in better shape or better able to create separation. His role needs to remain what it was going to be until Slayton is acclimated. You can just have Treadwell do that, which I don't love that idea either.
Starting point is 00:29:54 But it is what it is right now. It's not supposed to be fun to lose out of fierce. Yeah. I mean, dare I say after what we just saw. from Keenan Allen a week two. Honestly, keeping his role the way it was in this past game is probably a little bit too much. But we'll see if Keenan, aka Xavier Howard Allen, can really pop, can really come back in the next couple weeks.
Starting point is 00:30:15 But yeah, it's going to be a big test for him. Hopefully, this Dary Slaten thing can lead to him being on the roster when Alick Hears comes back in Keene Allen in a retirement home. But we'll see. We'll see. I don't want to say I'm completely turned on Keen and Allen, but, God, week two is rough, really rough watching him out there. one another way to be on Locked On Colts
