Starting point is 00:00:00 It's time to do some stealing Colts fans. Today on Locked On Colts, we steal one player from each of the other three AFC South teams for the 2022 season only in order to get to the Super Bowl. Let's get to it. You are Locked On Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast. Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. All right, Colts fans, thanks so much for tuning in and making us your number one listen of the day. This is your daily podcast covering your Indianapolis Colts, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. I am Jake Arthur, joined as always by my incomparable partner, Zach Hicks. Today, we're going to look at the Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Tennessee Titans. We're going to look them right in the face and steal one player from each of them to help the Colts get to the Super Bowl this season. And a reminder, salary cap is not a factor on this one.
Starting point is 00:01:16 Yeah, you clearly by your list, the salary cap is not a factor. Yeah, yeah, no kidding. We're going to start, we'll just go, I guess, in alphabetical city order, Houston Texans. Zach, who are you pillaging from them to put on the Colts for the 2022 season only? Yeah, I think this was the easiest one for me was the Texans. And it might be because the roster is not great. The roster is not actually, I don't think the roster is like terrible. It's just really young, you know?
Starting point is 00:01:47 So outside of the guy I took, I looked at like, you know, maybe a Derek Stingley. A Derek Stingley would be interesting. And I was really high on his film. And I think he has the potential to be a star corner in the NFL. But I didn't want to go with him for the 2022 season. I'm just not 100% sold yet before seeing him in the NFL. So I had to go with one of the more consistent players in all of football and Brandon Cooks. I think this was a really easy decision for me at the end of the day because Brandon Cooks,
Starting point is 00:02:16 you know, six of the last seven years, despite being traded three times, has had over a thousand yards receiving. It's just he's done it constantly. And I mean, last year they had Davis Mills, a quarterback. They had, I think, Tyrod Taylor for a bit, and he still hit 1,000 yards. And he was the only option in that offense. You know, it was really just him along with Nico Collins was kind of involved down the stretch.
Starting point is 00:02:38 But, you know, Brandon Cooks is the epitome of consistency. And then adding him to this Colts offense alongside Michael Pittman Jr., that would be pretty good. I mean, I would not hate it whatsoever. So if I had to steal anybody from the Texans for just the 2022 season, I think Brandon Cooks is kind of the easy answer for me. Yeah, I think that's definitely a good answer. It's one to circle. You and I were deciding between, we were both deciding between him.
Starting point is 00:03:06 You know, he's still got some wheels. He's a wily veteran by now, but he's still got some wheels. He's productive everywhere he goes. He's kind of famous for being underappreciated in the fantasy football community. He always gets drafted way too low, but outperforms it.
Starting point is 00:03:21 So he's almost famous for being infamously underrated. But no, that's a really good one. I like that you made that pick. Mine is Laramie Tunsil, left tackle. The Colts have some options at left tackle right now. Matt Pryor leading the charge, but that's kind of an unproven thing. We haven't seen that for an extended season, so that's still a prove-it situation. With Laramie Townsend, he's a two-time Pro Bowler. He does have injury issues. He's never played a full season, although he's had 14, 15 game seasons, and he's missed 20 total in his six years, and that includes 12 last year when he had thumb surgery, so that was kind of an IR thing. It wasn't a nagging issue, but he's, you know, that's,
Starting point is 00:04:06 that's not expected to be an issue moving forward, but still he's an above average left tackle, not the world's strongest run blocker. Luckily for the Colts, they've got that taken care of elsewhere, but he's a really good pass protector. And if the Colts hope for Matt Ryan to really flourish and be able to do his thing in the passing game, that's what they're going to need is just a consistent, reliable blindside protector for him. And you know, that fills one of the bigger question marks on the Colts offense for me, Laramie Tunsell. If they can't get Brandon Cooks, I think Tunsell is a nice addition there. Yeah, yeah, no, I don't disagree,
Starting point is 00:04:46 but honestly, I want to fight with you today, so let's go into it here. Let me take the side of the analytics. I insulted your guy, Matt Pryor. Let's take the side of the analytics guys here on Twitter, you know, the Nate Kents, you know, on Twitter and stuff like that, where the O-linemen don't matter and such. At the end of the day, I want an upgrade at left tackle. I mean, I watched Eric Fisher, every snap Eric Fisher played last season. But I want to ask you while we're doing this challenge here and while we have this kind of – at the end of the day, this is kind of a filler episode.
Starting point is 00:05:15 You guys know that listening. We're just having fun with some things before training camp starts. Do you see a bigger need at left tackle? Like say you could guarantee not even the guys that brandon cooks or laramie tonsils you know pedigree say you can guarantee around league average at left tackle this year for the colts or wide receiver two which one do you go with man honestly i think i would say left tackle because left tackle because it can be a big issue if your left tackle is not playing at least an average level. It's not like Matt Ryan's a spring chicken and is a guy that can escape the pocket super easily all the time.
Starting point is 00:05:57 Luckily for the Colts, and a big reason I say this for the Colts is because luckily they have Jonathan Taylor, Naheem Hines they can rely on in the passing game. They have some interesting things at tight end. We know Mo Alleycox can be decent. You know, he's – they'll be fine with him. Kylan Granson should take the next step hopefully. So if wide receiver two isn't, you know, isn't performing all that great, they have other areas they can make up for in the passing game. Yeah, yeah, no, I agree. I think my only pushback would be.
Starting point is 00:06:32 I think I trust Frank Wright to hide a left tackle or just a weaker offensive tackle, because even I mean, the offense, for the most part, for almost all of last season was still a top 10 offense in almost every statistic despite having one of the worst pass protectors in the entire league at left tackle i feel like they can hide that a little better than hiding receivers who can't get open and i'm not saying that's going to be paris campbell that's going to be alec pierce i'm not trying to down like say this bad things about those guys at all um i'm just saying if they for whatever reason you know paris camp Campbell can't stay healthy again, if Alec Pierce just shows that he's a rookie, things might get hard for that passing game. And we've seen it last year,
Starting point is 00:07:14 like in the Patriots game, for instance, when JC Jackson was following around Michael Pittman Jr. And he was, you know, outside of the one missed deep shot to Michael Pittman Jr., JC Jackson was all over Pittman that entire game. It was a tough game for him. Then that's when we saw that passing offense die. Now, I'm with you.
Starting point is 00:07:31 I think Matt Ryan can operate still at a higher level than that. But for me, adding another really quality receiver or having, in real life, having Alec Pierce or Paris Campbell actually play and produce, I think that's so much more important than than Matt Pryor or Bernard Ryman being like you know even like average level starters like I feel like Frank Wright can hide that better we've seen it with Braden Smith in 2018 that kind of hit him a little bit um and we saw a little bit last year they get like Frank Wright could not work his magic 100% last year with it but we've seen it a little bit in the past. So I don't think there's really a wrong
Starting point is 00:08:05 answer here at all. Maybe it's just my partly analytics brain going, you know, keep adding weapons to the passing game. But yeah, no, I think it's a really interesting debate that kind of comes from this, this stealing game is, you know, wide receiver or left tackle. You went with the above average left tackle. I won't be above average receiver on this one. Now, see, the plot twist here is because our guy, Kylan Granson, is going to transform into Travis Kelsey this year. You didn't see that coming. You don't need that wide receiver, too, if you've got the ultra tight end one. Right, right. You know, we had to do it to them, right?
Starting point is 00:08:39 Yeah. You said that as crisply as possible. I was ready. I was, I was preparing for it today. Oh yeah. All right. So if you're looking at either, either side here, the Colts have a new high end left tackle or above average left tackle and an above average wide receiver to, to compliment Michael Pittman Jr. In the comments guys. In the comments,
Starting point is 00:09:05 guys, in the comments, tell me I'm right on this one in particular, but in the comments, or tell Zach he sucks like that one guy on YouTube. I don't know what it is. I just can't like the Zach guy. You know,
Starting point is 00:09:18 my therapist has heard the same thing for years. Oh boy. Self-deprecating humor is what you guys come here for. Is that right? Yeah, but we're having fun today. Let's get into some bets though, Jake. Do you have some bets for us here? Absolutely, I do. So betonline.net is obviously the fastest and easiest way to check in on all your betting needs. Find all your favorite sports events at the number one online source for odds, lines, and games. Find reviews and news of every league, including Major League Baseball, NFL, NBA, NHL, combat sports, esports, and even golf.
Starting point is 00:09:57 Even golf seems like the stretch at the end of those considering there's combat sports and esports, but I digress. But BetOnline, on yesterday's show, we talked all about BetOnline's over-unders for Matt Ryan and Jonathan Taylor, Michael Pittman Jr. If you didn't catch that, go do it now. But yeah, we'll tell you right there what BetOnline's over-unders are for those guys' statistics. Yeah, make sure that you go to BetOnline because it continues to be
Starting point is 00:10:24 the top online resource for all your sports wagering information from live in-game betting scores and podcasts. They have you covered head to bet online today, or use your mobile device to learn more about the action happening. Bet online where the game starts. Which NFL stars move the betting line the most? This week, Locked On gives you the 50 most valuable players in the NFL from the odds makers at who? BetOnline.
Starting point is 00:10:52 The Colts have Matt Ryan and Jonathan Taylor involved in this. Where do they rank? You're going to have to check in and find out. But Zach and I gave our takes on both of them. Are they too high, too low? What do we think? Again, this week on Locked On NFL, wherever you get your podcasts and on YouTube. All right. So after we went through
Starting point is 00:11:13 the Texans, we got a new left tackle and we got a new wide receiver. Zach, who are you taking from the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars? You know, I'm actually surprisingly higher on the Jaguars this year than I think most people. I believe in Doug Peterson. Well, now that they got a new coaching staff and it's not such a fire going on there, anything is better than what was going on. Yep, yep.
Starting point is 00:11:38 So I did look again at receiver because, again, I guess my analytics brain is just flying off right now. I like Marvin Jones. I like LaVisca Chennault. I think they're good players. I think tight end had a lot of good options. Evan Ingram, Dan Arnold, I'm particularly high on, but I had to go back to the defense, you know, cause I took receiver with the first one. I had to go defense and I'm taking Josh Allen. I wish this was the quarterback, Josh Allen, but I'm taking the pass rusher, Josh Allen, who's, who's a good player in his own right.
Starting point is 00:12:05 You know, last year he had eight sacks, nine quarterback hits, 33 hurries, and then he had 35 stops too overall. I mean, I just think he's a really, really solid player. You know, he might never be, you know, a top 10, top 15 pass rusher in the NFL. You know, he might always just be an eight to 10 sack guy or, you know, 8-12 sack guy, but that's fine. Like, that's a really solid player in this league. And, yeah, and he's a really good two-way player, too. You know, if Quiddie Paye gets to this level that Josh Allen's currently at, I feel very, very good about Quiddie Paye. So this is just adding more to that pass rush unit, and I think Josh Allen is a really solid player.
Starting point is 00:12:43 Yeah, that absolutely cannot be a wrong answer because Josh Allen is that's that's a ferocious dude and it's the only guy on that defense really it's like who else but they've got some attractive options here and there you know Tyson Campbell would be a decent option as well Trayvon Walker was interesting I almost went Trayvon Walker because just imagine him next to Buckner on past rushing downs. Like that's freaky. That's yeah, it's really freaky. It's really freaky.
Starting point is 00:13:10 But yeah. So the guy I was considering first was Evan Ingram. You know, do do we give Matt Ryan that, you know, at that athletic, you know, kind of maybe not do it all tied in, but a guy who can be kind of a difference maker when he's healthy. I almost give him a discount for the giant stuff because I mean, he was hurt a lot, but who really has flourished with the giants over the last few years? The Colts almost signed him. The Colts almost signed him. They were about to sign him. Yeah. They were, well,
Starting point is 00:13:43 I'm not going to say they're about to sign him, but they were one of the final teams. But Ingram ultimately decided to go to a team that actually had a quarterback at that time. The Colts just did not have a quarterback at that time. Yeah, so it makes a lot of sense. Yeah. Yeah, plus Jacksonville was just giving out the craziest amount of money
Starting point is 00:14:00 to anyone. So that's hard to compete with. But ultimately who I decided on, we're building up a wall here for Matt Ryan and Jonathan Taylor. I went with right guard Brandon Scherf. Now, shoot, this guy, you know, one all pro, five pro bowls.
Starting point is 00:14:17 He is just the model of consistency. He's been a top five right guard every year of his career and a top 10 guard overall most seasons, according to PFF. When you look at his annual grades, it's just all green, dark green. Like this dude is always good. He's, you know, it's hard to find a better right guard in the NFL. And he's been someone the Colts have been rumored about.
Starting point is 00:14:43 He's been tagged by Washington a time or two, I think. He finally went somewhere else. Fans wanted him then. Here, I give him to the Colts, so they've added Laramie Tunsil at left tackle, Brandon Scherff at right guard. That already includes Quentin Nelson, Ryan Kelly, Braden Smith. That's a pretty nice line for Matt Ryan to pass behind and for Taylor to run behind as well.
Starting point is 00:15:05 Our analytics buddies on Twitter are going to come after your throat after this episode. Nate is fuming right now. I mean, they are seeing all the offensive line. Yeah, they're seeing all the offensive linemen. They're going, Jake, no. It's all about the weapons on offense and defense. But Brandon Sheriff's the guy who— Anyone's a weapon with this protection now, right?
Starting point is 00:15:23 Yeah, that's true. Brandon Sheriff's the guy who I covered for a bit in Washington back when I did Locked On Washington. And growing up, I remember when he was drafted as a Washington fan back then. And yeah, he's a really, really good player. He's had some injury issues the last couple seasons. And that's why, ultimately, I'm not as high on this signing for the Jaguars when they made it because I mean it was a big deal to give to someone who's kind of been on and off with some injuries last couple years but when he plays he's an outstanding player great power a good pass protector mauler in the run game so I mean adding him with Quentin Nelson and Ryan Kelly's easy
Starting point is 00:16:00 and and I feel you know I'm kind of more concerned about right guard with the Colts anyway than left tackle. So, and I'm high on Danny Pinter. I think Danny Pinter is going to be a fine player, but I'm a little more concerned there than I am at left tackle. So adding a guy like Sheriff makes a ton of sense in this scenario. I still value the pass rusher a little bit more just because last year might've mentally scarred me from seeing the Colts not get to anybody in the pass rusher a little bit more just because last year might have mentally scarred me from seeing the Colts not get to anybody in the pass rushing game. Yeah, that's not fun at all. So I don't blame you for your pick whatsoever. You could even throw Tyson Campbell in there, but he's maybe not quite far along yet. Because guys, remember, this is just for 2022. Yeah, so with my approach, I don't think i went into this
Starting point is 00:16:45 planning to add two offensive linemen but just looking at all the rosters i was like you know i like how this shakes out a little bit why not yeah i mean when you have when you have two teams your division that are going to be fighting for probably another top 10 pick i mean again i think the jaguars might surprise some people and have a decent year but on paper they're probably both bottom 10 teams. There's not going to be that much talent on there outside of, oh, Derek Stingley, who just went third overall, and Trayvon Walker, who just went first overall. I think these two teams could win more games this year than last year,
Starting point is 00:17:20 but ultimately, I mean, just looking through the rosters today to do this, they're kind of weaker rosters. You know, they need big jumps from their sophomore quarterbacks to to be competing for a playoff spot or competing for a winning season this year and i'll also answer the yeah buts that we're going to certainly get on this and that's for trevor lawrence so first remember this isn't a career for the rest of their career thing it's just for 2022 and yes for 2022 i would rather I would rather have Matt Ryan than Trevor Lawrence. How the Colts approach this offseason, they're clearly trying to make a run at the Super Bowl or deep playoff run.
Starting point is 00:17:54 They're not just trying to get better for this year. They're going for the gold. And I think most of the moves they've made are indicative of that. And you know much more what you're getting in Matt Ryan than you do Trevor Lawrence and I think everyone would take Trevor Lawrence for the rest of his career but from what you saw last year all you saw were glimpses you didn't see you didn't see like the Andrew Luck prospect that a lot of people thought they were going to see yeah so if you guaranteed me Trevor Lawrence playing against the Colts
Starting point is 00:18:27 in Jacksonville for a whole season, I'd probably take him over Matt Ryan, but that's probably it. That's probably the only Trevor Lawrence I would take over. Yeah, and that's the last Trevor Lawrence we've seen, of course, is him carving up the Colts. So, of course, that looks like a no-brainer, but I think both Zach and I are more comfortable with Matt Ryan just for this year.
Starting point is 00:18:46 All right, last are the little brothers that finally figured out how to beat us in basketball, and that is the Tennessee Titans. Zach, who are you stealing from them to ruin their day? This was tough because, I mean, I know people want to bash on the Titans and say that the Colts are definitely the favorites in this division going into next year. And and I know we always got to talk our smack with Titans fans, but their roster is really, really good. It has a lot of all pros and pro bowl type guys, you know, left tackle Taylor Juan. They have Kevin Bayard at safety. Christian Fulton, I think, was is an underrated selection. He was kind of their rockest in last year on that defense. Very, very productive corner. And then, you know,
Starting point is 00:19:30 partly, partly, it crossed my mind for like a second. I was like, could I just grab Derek Henry and we just have like the most fun running game ever? Like, you know, best one-two punch. How does that work? Just high formation all game? Yes, yes. But then Robert Woods formation all game yes yes uh but then Robert Woods was also another interesting one because a very very productive good receiver it would be awesome to have Brandon Cooks and Robert Woods with Michael Pittman Jr. but the guy I had to go with was is arguably you know a top two defensive tackle in football I would say more like top five uh but Jeffrey Simmons I mean he is just awesome just a great football player uh last
Starting point is 00:20:07 year i had the numbers right here uh including playoffs because he had three sacks in the playoff game so his numbers did jump up a little bit because of it but he had 14 sacks last year five quarterback hits 47 hurries and 34 stops now his 14 sacks were second in the entire nfl behind aaron donald among defensive tackles his uh 47 hurries were fourth among defensive tackles and his 34 stops were sixth among defensive tackles so he's i mean he's firmly in that top five uh for defensive tackles league wide i think the guys that you could argue are you know cam hayward uh deforest buckner jonathan allen and then obviously aaron obviously Aaron Donald is the top guy.
Starting point is 00:20:50 But no, I mean, he's an outstanding player, a young player, too, who's gotten better every single year. And as they've added more pass rushers around him, you've seen those numbers go up. So I know the hope with the Colts this next year is with Yannick Ngakwe, with Quiddie Paye, we see DeForest Buckner's numbers get better because he has more talent around him, like we've seen with Simmons with Tennessee. But yeah, Simmons next to Buckner. I mean, I don't even need players from the,
Starting point is 00:21:09 I don't need players from the Texans or Jaguars. I would just take Simmons in a heartbeat, you know, but I do again, want to put it out there. Christian Fulton was a guy I went back and forth because I really think people are underrating how good he was last year. And I think he could be,
Starting point is 00:21:27 you know, if he wasn't last season, I think he could be like a breakout star in the NFL this next year, because I don't think many people talk about just how, like every time I looked up a Rocky Sin number, because again, Rocky Sin was locked down for last half of last season. You would always see right behind it, Christian Fulton, like the same type of numbers, but he was getting interceptions. Rocky Sin was not getting, he was getting interceptions roccason was not getting you know interceptions so right uh fulton i think is like a year away from being like a star corner but uh jeffrey simmons is already you know a superstar pass rusher
Starting point is 00:21:54 yeah he absolutely is and to your point caleb farley's another young corner they have that is intriguing but we just haven't seen enough from him yet. Wow. Sorry for that big, that was distracting. Yeah. So the Titans do have plenty of talent. And of course I'm just ribbing Titans fans. Cause if they, if they weren't so touchy on Twitter,
Starting point is 00:22:17 I wouldn't, I wouldn't care, but I already have my left tackle. So Taylor, the one that's kind of off the board because we don't want to, we don't just want to pour it on. But put him in center. But Ryan Kelly is your sixth offensive lineman or something.
Starting point is 00:22:34 Exactly. You're big tight end. And then of course, Zach picks Jeffrey Simmons. That's another guy. The Colts had interest in during the draft. Ultimately I'm landing with Kevin Bayard. Consistently one of the best safeties in the NFL year after year.
Starting point is 00:22:50 Two Pro Bowls, two All-Pros to go with it. He didn't, I think he played about half the time as a rookie back in 2016. But he's had a PFF grade of at least 87 in three of his six seasons. And, you know, he's just one of the best ball hawking safeties in the NFL. And it's a position where I feel like it's starting to lack. It's mostly starting to lean more towards corners again. But he's got 23 picks, including four seasons with at least four interceptions. It's a lot of consistency. He started to add forced fumbles to his resume. If you're a Colts fan, you know what he can do to your team in overtime with bad throws. I think he just fits the Colts really well.
Starting point is 00:23:34 He's just another really opportunistic player like a Kenny Moore, Darius Leonard. I think we'll see with Yannick Ngakwe even. But I just kind of picture him roaming up top in that new Gus Bradley defense. And there's not a lot not about that. I know he's not afraid to come down and hit either, pairing him with Julian Blackman and Nick Cross. Cross obviously becomes the third guy. But that seems really appealing. Yeah, yeah, no. And, you know, just to transition off that to kill some time on this last filler episode of the year, guys, because really, again, this our last like fun one before it becomes training camp, you know, it's, it's officially training camp. And we're just, you know, it's going to be nonstop the rest of the year. But lately, I seen a lot of Jesse Bates trade rulers, you know, you see the Jesse Bates stuff, I think uh was it bovada or it might have been bet online i'm not too sure had the colts as like the sixth most likely team to trade for for jesse up there yeah now i i think you and i are going to be in the same boat but say
Starting point is 00:24:36 the bangles want your first round pick for jesse bates what are you thinking no yeah that's cool i mean let's not act like jesse bates wouldn't add a big boost to the colts but that they don't need a safety near enough to give up i don't know that i would give up a first round pick for pretty much any safety not to mention probably that's probably the position that the colts worked on the most this offseason? If you guaranteed me completely healthy Derwin James, I might do that. Okay. And that's unfortunately been – he hasn't been able to do that. But, yeah, someone like Derwin James, that's worth it.
Starting point is 00:25:16 Yeah. But – so part of me is like with this cover three, you know, middle of the field close type scheme with Gus Bradley, having one of the best ball hawks in all of football at free safety would be game changer for the Colts. And I'm not saying that I'm all for it. Cause again, I wouldn't do it, but I think he would be a game changer for this defense with the stars they
Starting point is 00:25:38 already have. But I want to still see Julian Blackman get another shot. I mean, I know that the injury, the injury is brutal and we don't know how he's going to come back, but I would rather see him go out there and fail or succeed. You know, I'd rather see what happens with Julian Blackman before giving up on him because the potential is there.
Starting point is 00:25:57 And I think he could be great in this new scheme. It's just Jesse Bates would be great though, too. I mean, Jesse Bates would be outstanding, but to get up with another first round pick, I'm not for for it but i know i've seen that trending and stuff on twitter i think the top couple teams were like it was like philadelphia like washington was up there dallas was up there and then obviously the colts up there because they have cap space and
Starting point is 00:26:18 and honestly safety is kind of a question for the colts with julian blackman coming back from the injury so i get it uh but again i'd rather see see Julian Blackman get his, I'm not going to say it's his final shot, but like another shot after this injury to see what he can do. Yeah. Not to mention a first round pick hypothetically, like you mentioned, that'd be pretty rich for a team that probably is looking for their long-term quarterback. And this is supposed to be a pretty good quarterback class in the next draft. So you got to hold onto that first rounder, but you know, who else I was thinking might fit well as that, that, that third safety would be Mully Cooker.
Starting point is 00:26:54 If you're looking at someone who could be opportunistic, of course, that's he's not Jesse Bates level, but right, right, right.
