Starting point is 00:00:00 The Indianapolis Colts made history on Saturday against the Minnesota Vikings as they are the first team ever to blow a 33-point halftime lead. We're going to talk about all that here and much more on today's episode of Locked On Colts. Let's get to it. You are Locked On Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast. Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. Thank you all for tuning in and making us, you know, one of your listens today. I'm not going to say it's your first listen of the day. You know, it's a little bit later in the day, but we do appreciate you guys tuning in. This is your daily podcast covering your Indianapolis Colts, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. This is Zach Hicks, and today I am joined by Andrew Moore.
Starting point is 00:01:03 Again, Jake was out doing stuff for his daughter's birthday, so he got to miss whatever that circus was, as our friend The Manly here on YouTube says. Boy, that was a circus. Clowns everywhere. Yes, absolutely. 100%. Great call. I completely agree. But today, guys, we are going to talk about the game that you guys just watched that, oh my gosh, I mean, I just kind of want to get into it. So yeah, again, we're going to start off just talking about our takeaways from this, but yeah,
Starting point is 00:01:30 the Colts up 33 to nothing at halftime, 33 to nothing over the Minnesota Vikings, a 10 and three team on the road. They were up. Everything was going great. We were having fun. We were saying screw the draft pick stuff for one more day. We get to just have some fun, enjoy win. But then for all of you guys who love tanking, who want the higher pick, who want that top pick, oh my gosh, 36. I mean, they went up 36 to seven at one point
Starting point is 00:02:00 and then ended up losing it overtime 39 to 36 to the Vikings. Wow. Andrew, what's your takeaway from this game? Because oh my gosh, I did. I mean, wow. Well, you know, Zach, I was I was sitting there watching and I had my postgame analysis piece, which just went live on horseshoe huddle.com. For all the guys that want to go check that out. I was sitting there and I had the title about how the Colts blew out the Minnesota Vikings and pretty much had to change my entire article within that last half of football. It was only the Indianapolis Colts. Only the 2022 Indianapolis Colts could go up 33 to nothing at the end of the first half. Look absolutely unstoppable on defense and special teams,
Starting point is 00:02:47 and then just completely lay an egg in the second half to give up the biggest comeback in NFL history. It's laughable at this point, but dude, would you really expect anything else from the 2022 Colts? I mean, I would love to say that I was, that I'm shocked about this, but I'm really not, I'm really not shocked that this is what happened. And I am again, it's hard to be excited about things like this because at the end of the day,
Starting point is 00:03:18 this is a team that you cover. It's a team that you watch, the team that you root for and they just got embarrassed and everyone was watching, you know, this wasn't like a primetime game, but they just got embarrassed. And everyone was watching. This wasn't like a primetime game, but this was a 1 o'clock Saturday game. It was the only game going on besides some college football games. So everybody was watching this game. Everybody was tuned in. And honestly, a blowout loss is less embarrassing than this. This is NFL history level embarrassing.
Starting point is 00:03:42 And honestly, again, I can't be excited about this, but for anyone out there who wants that higher pick, who also did not want Jeff Saturday or Chris Ballard back next season, I think this game goes a long way towards making that happen because look, Jim Ursae took control of this team halfway through the year. He made the move ahead coach. He changed everything. He told Frank Reich also to bench quarterbacks and yada, yada, yada before all that. So, I mean, this has been Jim Ursae's hand at everything this year. And the only way to get that ownership hand out of there was some really, really embarrassing losses by going about his path. And if you guys did not want Ursae's hand in everything going forward, I do think that this goes a long way towards it happening because he might not listen to the fans.
Starting point is 00:04:27 He won't listen to the writers. He thinks he's smarter than all them. But when you have literally everybody laughing at you for being an embarrassment, that is when it can kind of get through your head. I mean, I have dealt with people who, or I've seen people, I'm not saying Jim Ursae has this ego, but again, he kind of took that control. You know, he, he believed in himself. He was really believing in his ability to turn this around with his guy at coach and, and everything. Sometimes you need that just shot back down to earth, that what you did was an abject disaster. And, and last week or
Starting point is 00:04:59 two weeks ago against the Dallas Cowboys was part of that. And this is even more embarrassing than that Cowboys one. So again, I'm not here to put rose colored glasses on and say like of that and this is even more embarrassing than that Cowboys one so again I'm not here to put rose-colored glasses on and say like oh this is a great thing but it's kind of a good thing I don't know Andrew what do you what are your thoughts on all that that's two weeks in a row on national television where the Colts are the only game on right then and there and And they, they completely, they just embarrassed themselves. They're the laughingstock of the NFL at this point. And,
Starting point is 00:05:31 and you look at that game and how it started and you think, oh, wow, the Colts really, really got right off the bye week. They came out with energy. The, the special teams was huge.
Starting point is 00:05:39 The Colts started forcing turnovers like they did last season. Something we haven't really seen all year. And, and the Colts offense wasn turnovers like they did last season, something we haven't really seen all year. And the Colts' offense wasn't turning over the ball. And then it's just like a switch flipped, and the 2022 Colts were back as soon as the second half kickoff happened. And it was a defense that couldn't stop anybody, an offense that was abysmal, couldn't move the ball. There were drops all over the place.
Starting point is 00:06:02 Protection was breaking down. And then a costly turnover by Deion Jackson. and moved the ball. There were drops all over the place. Protection was breaking down and then the costly turnover by Dion Jackson. And it was just a complete tale of two halves. And you're right. If for the people that, that are, are looking for a better draft pick, looking for Jeff Saturday and Chris Ballard to be out of here at the end of the year, looking for Jim Irsay to get his hand out of the cookie jar and take a step back, stop being so impulsive and making these moves with this team. This was absolutely right. And, and you see Jim Irsay for years has been talking about the Colts don't have enough primetime games. Um, the Colts aren't, aren't, aren't respected nationally. Well now
Starting point is 00:06:40 back-to-back primetime games, you've been absolutely embarrassed leaving the stadium with the tail tucked between your legs. It might be Roger Goodell, given Jim Irsay, like, okay, you have your primetime games. This is why you don't have your primetime games. So, I mean, it's just another embarrassing day for the Indianapolis Colts from the top down, from Jim Irsay on down. I think everybody should be embarrassed about that performance whether whether you're a fan watching at home who doesn't really have stake
Starting point is 00:07:10 in it I mean you can I think we can all agree that that was just uh an implosion an absolutely catastrophic implosion that we just witnessed right and yeah again I'm not gonna say that being embarrassed is a good thing but again when you have an owner who is, again, like you said, getting a hand in the cookie jar a little too much and kind of taking over full control, it. They kind of needed these embarrassing losses. You needed some embarrassment just to get him to take that step back. Because look, Jim Irsay, again, I think he's a fine owner. I've covered worse owners than him, obviously, in my life. But he got a little too greedy, man. He trusted himself a little too much.
Starting point is 00:08:02 And it's not a bad thing to have trust in yourself or have faith in yourself. But I hope this was just a wake up call to him that Jeff Saturday is not the answer. Chris Ballard's team is not ready to take that step. The build that Chris Ballard did with this team is a failed build. It's a bill that needs to be blown up. I'm not saying it needs, you know, 100% revamp everybody out the door, but it needs some very, very, very big changes. Oh, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:08:29 Yeah. I just think that I hope, or at least I hope this is a big wake up call that everybody in that like front office or everyone, you know, in the owner's box, whatever needed to say, look, we need to move on from this. We need a fresh start. But we're going to talk about that, obviously, in more episodes later this week because, oh, my gosh. But we're going to talk about the Colts offense a little bit in depth here coming up. But first, this episode is sponsored by Tommy John.

Starting point is 00:10:00 See the site for details. All right, guys. So sorry my voice was cracking a little bit during all that there I'm losing my voice a little bit today because oh my gosh but let's talk about this Colts offense and honestly when you look at this Colts offense it was a disaster from from start to finish with this offense like yes they had some decent little moments and drives there but the passing game was a train wreck the running game didn't really get much going. Basically all their points in production came on special teams plays, came on defensive turnovers and stuff like that.
Starting point is 00:10:32 It really wasn't anything the offense was doing, and that carried into the second half, and eventually the Colts' defense legs gave out, and that was it. But I think the biggest storyline with this Colts' offense is Parks Frazier was given the most impossible task you're talking about what 29 30 year old assistant QB coach is the highest he's ever been assistant QB coach and you're giving him the reins on the worst offense in football and you're throwing him out there and you're saying all right yeah try to be productive try to fix this and again I can't hold it too much against him because there was just no
Starting point is 00:11:09 chance for success with him in that role but it has been terrible like yes the quarterback issue is a major issue the receivers did not have a good game the running back struggled the o-line was kind of actually fine like I don't really have too many issues the o-line but i think the play calling was the most glaring thing to me it's just run run pass or run run run uh wide receiver screen on like four third downs in this game like again i i really want to put it out here again parks frazier had no chance of succeeding as play caller there was absolutely no chance whatsoever that he was going to succeed. He just was not ready for it. And I can't put much blame on him, but it has been every bit as bad as one would expect from an assistant QB coach taking over as play caller halfway through the season.
Starting point is 00:11:57 Yeah, I would agree. It's, it's just become so predictable. And we talk about this. It seems like every week now, how predictable this Colts offense is. You mean the first two third downs in the red zone there, inside the 10, everybody in the stadium knows that the ball is going to go to Zach Moss. There wasn't even a threat of play action. I mean, you saw Harrison Smith just fly around the corner there, heading straight for Zach Moss. And the Colts just didn't adapt to it at all. It was the same thing over and over again.
Starting point is 00:12:30 There was a point in the game when a third down came up, and I'm like, it was third and I think third and eight. I'm like, they're probably going to throw a wide receiver screen over to Michael Pittman Jr. Sure enough, it's a wide receiver screen to Michael Pittman Jr. on third and eight. And if me just sitting at home knows that's going to happen, the Vikings defensive coaching staff for sure knows that that is going to happen.
Starting point is 00:12:53 So again, I would agree. Parks Frazier comes into this situation where he doesn't have the experience. He's really a last option considering Scott Milanovich turned down the play calling role, which I mean, he probably picked cheap looking back on it. Probably the right decision by Scott Milanovich. Smartest man alive. I mean, just hats off. What a genius, man.
Starting point is 00:13:16 Like he smoked so smart. Yeah. So it's hard to put this on Parks Frazier, but at the same time, Parks Frazier, this is your opportunity to to show the rest of the nfl like what you're made of and right now yes we know you're young but you're also looking like a very vanilla play caller at this point yeah and uh i see a lot of comments here i'm sorry i'm just reading all these while you're talking here a lot of people saying this is frank reich's offense this is frank reich's disciple
Starting point is 00:13:43 look guys frank reich was not great this season i am not going to come on here and say frank reich lot of people saying this is Frank Reich's offense. This is Frank Reich's disciple. Look, guys, Frank Reich was not great this season. I am not going to come on here and say Frank Reich should not have been fired. He should have been fired at the end of the season. I 100% agree. It was time to move on from Frank Reich because the team was going nowhere under him. But if you can't see the difference between this offense and even Frank Reich's, and again, Frank Reich's offense got shut out by the Jaguars they scored what three points against the Patriots they were not good but if you can't even see the play calling differences I mean under Frank Reich the team's offensive the offensive line was just getting destroyed like they were getting run over every week and the offense couldn't do anything with Parks Frazier the O-line has been fine like the O-line really
Starting point is 00:14:21 these last couple weeks I would say is like an average offensive line but the play calling is so predictable and matt ryan again i'm not going to give matt ryan excuse he has really fallen off a cliff recently uh those are the two things that have led to this offense being just as bad as under frank reich and yes the points per game might look a little better but the colts defense has gotten some more turnovers and they had the special team stuff i mean the colts offense was a major, major disaster from start, or from beginning to end outside of, they just didn't turn the ball over a lot. So I guess we could be kind of happy about that.
Starting point is 00:14:51 But yeah, I do think Frank Reich had to go, but Parks Frazier, man, like it's just not ready. It's not ready. And one more thing. Yeah, we'll talk about the Matt Ryan thing. Cause you guys are talking a lot about Matt Ryan here. Like, whew, whew, man, Matt Ryan, thing yeah we'll talk about the matt ryan thing because you guys are talking a lot about matt ryan here like whoo whoo man matt ryan these last two games he has looked like really cooked like like you could see it early in the season that the arm was falling off and that there were a lot of
Starting point is 00:15:20 turnovers that shouldn't have been turnovers and and i was like oh man but these last two games like if you take the fourth quarter of of the cowboys game and then almost the entirety of this game like he looks like peyton manning at the end of his career he looks like ben roethlisberger at the end of his career like oh man it's hard to see a fringe hall of fame quarterback just kind of go through this and that was my one thing i was watching in this game was can matt ryan bounce back and he kind of he just looked cook again cooked again man i don't know it really yeah it's it's tough because like like we talked about yesterday i mean matt ryan has been a solid pro through everything that's happened this season with the colts and and he's a great person i truly believe that but there's no doubt that that he's he's just done he's a great person. I truly believe that, but there's no doubt that, that he's, he's just done. He's washed. I want everyone watching this to pray for me as I go through the film later this week,
Starting point is 00:16:13 doing my Ryan review, it's going to be, it's going to be brutal. It's going to be brutal, but this, I think a big thing with this is we, the Colts have had quarter, a quarterback in Phillip rivers that didn't have the strongest arm like Matt Ryan, but a big difference differences. Number one, the offensive line played a hell of a lot better under Phillip Rivers than they have under Matt Ryan. That's number one, but number two, and I think a lot of people don't really see this maybe, but it's Phillip Rivers was elite, absolutely elite with his anticipation skills. He was able to throw the ball out and get it to a spot where the wide receiver was going to be
Starting point is 00:16:52 a lot of times before the wide receiver even made their break. That's not what Matt Ryan has been doing this season. When you look at the film, Matt Ryan is late on throws. It looks like the game is just too fast for him. And when you combine that with an arm that it just does not have the velocity that it used to have, you're not going to be able to make very many plays in the passing game, let alone take some deep shots down the field to guys like Alec Pierce, Paris Campbell, Michael Pittman, all of which we've seen win down the field in various ways. So when you have all that combined with the regression of the offensive line, it's just a recipe for disaster.
Starting point is 00:17:29 And we talked about it. Going up against the 32nd-ranked pass defense in the Minnesota Vikings, this was the perfect opportunity for Matt Ryan to rebound and bring some life into this Colts offense. Didn't do it. Didn't show up. Yeah, and Jerry has a great question here so why is he on the field if you guys are listening to the audio I just shrugged I have no clue I
Starting point is 00:17:54 don't know I and I've said it multiple times too if he takes one bad hit in these last three games the Colts are on the hook for 35 million dollars next season. If he doesn't play and they cut him, they can save, I think, $18 million. So, Jerry, that's a great question. Please go into the press conference thing with Jeff Saturday and please ask him that question there. I really think we deserve that. But, guys, we're going to talk about this Colts defense coming up and why it's a tough game to evaluate for them.
Starting point is 00:18:24 But we'll talk about that here in a second. Before we move on, though, I want to tell you about one of our sponsors, Total Wine & More. Starting point is 00:18:51 pickup and delivery available in most areas visit totalwine.com to learn more drink responsibly and be 21 be 21 guys that's the biggest thing all right get into this last segment we're going to talk about the colts defense and they're going to get a lot of hate for how they played because they struggled in that second half but very very big but they were the whole reason why the colts took that giant lead they were smothering the vikings in that first, like absolutely smothering foot on the neck and then just stomping and stomping and stomping. This Colts defense was just abusing them in the first half. And then as that second half came out, kept going where the Colts were three and out, three and out, three and out, three and out consistently on offense, the Colts defense started to fall
Starting point is 00:19:42 apart. So yes, there's a lot of issues with the Colts defense and I do think that we are starting to see them give way but a lot of it is man they've been carrying this entire team on their back all season we saw it even in the first half of this game they were caught they were carrying this offense on their back and eventually the legs give out and when the legs give out it was bad like they I mean, the Dalvin Cook long touchdown at the end of regulation is something that just can't happen. Like it's embarrassing. That should not happen whatsoever. And a lot of these touchdowns, again, were just far too easy for the Vikings.
Starting point is 00:20:15 But I have a hard time pointing this loss at the defense when, again, this Colts offense, it was just three and out, three and out, three and out constantly. Going against an offense where Kirk Cousins is a fine quarterback Justin Jefferson is an unstoppable being at receiver and Dalvin Cook is one of the best running backs in football like it's just it's tough to kind of just keep giving that offense chances no matter how good your defense is you're eventually going to break if you're just out there for so much of the game and it was just yeah it was it was tough to see the defense go down like that but I personally would put this more on the offense even though I do think the defense deserves a fair fair amount of blame for this you know
Starting point is 00:20:54 I would agree I feel like it's it's on both sides but but in regards to the offense I mean you think about in the first half how many times that the Colts special teams or the Colts defense turned the ball over and got the ball back to the offense with fantastic field position, literally in Vikings territory around the 30 yard line. How many of those drives ended with a Chase McLaughlin field goal rather than a touchdown? I mean, that's the, that's literally the difference in the game. You could talk about the Vikings come back all you want in the second half, but if the Colts just turn one or two of those possessions from field goals into touchdowns,
Starting point is 00:21:33 we're probably talking about a Colts victory right now instead of an absolute implosion by this Colts team. If I would have told you yesterday that this Colts team would have sacked Kirk Cousins seven times and picked him off twice, you're probably thinking, wow, Colts defense played a great game. But again, it was just like a switch flipped. They went from looking like the 85 Bears in the first half to looking like they shouldn't have even been on an NFL field in the second. There were some good things.
Starting point is 00:22:05 I definitely want to credit the pass rush because you had guys like Dio Odengbo who got two sacks on the day. And I think it was seven sacks altogether by six different players, Buckner, Stewart, Ngakwe, Pei, Odengbo. All of those guys created havoc back there. But it was getting all different levels of the defense playing at that level at the same time, whether it was the linebackers missing, missing on a slant or missing in coverage, whether it was allowing somebody like a Justin Jefferson, who is probably
Starting point is 00:22:35 the best wide receiver in the NFL, but letting him get free like that as Keenan comes in the biggest dial fan I know, but, but yeah, I, I mean, you can't talk about saying that this defense is the sole reason the Colts lost this game when they were the biggest reason that the Colts were up 33-0 at the end of the first half. Oh, and special teams. Shout out to Bubba Ventura. I know we don't have a special team segment
Starting point is 00:23:00 because we don't have four segments here, but Bubba Ventura with that special teams. Got the block punt return for a touchdown Dallas Flowers had multiple big time returns I mean Dallas Flowers is so much fun I wanted the Vikings to keep scoring so we could get more Dallas Flowers returns so that's that's where my opinion is right now and then Chase McLaughlin man you got to give him an extension the second the offseason starts because I know I'm not one to to compliment kickers i hate kickers kickers suck but a kicker that's not a liability is a good friend of mine
Starting point is 00:23:30 and chase mclaughlin has not been a liability this season so uh yeah special teams huge shout out and they didn't fall off whatsoever they continued playing really well all game long but yeah the defense again they're just so worn out. They're so run down right now. And again, to give a big shout out to the plays that this defense made in the first half, Julian Blackman had a pick six. Ronnie Thomas had a pick in the second half. Zyra Franklin had a punch out fumble in the first half. And then again, the seven sacks.
Starting point is 00:24:00 I mean, I know one of them was where Kirk had like the hilarious just fall. I needed more means of that because that was absolutely hilarious. It was just falling backwards when the center stepped on his foot or something. But anyway, yeah, this Colts defense, man, I think they made enough plays early to this shouldn't have been even a conversation. But yes, they fell apart later in the game. And I think that's more just indicative of the whole season as it is. Like they're, they're just so run down right now.
Starting point is 00:24:29 And it's hard to really put anything on them again. They've been doing far too much this season in a, in an NFL that's run by offense. This Colts defense has been just kind of carrying the Colts offense all years. So it's just a struggle for me. It's a struggle. I do acknowledge guys that they did have a bad second half. Like I'm not trying to take all the blame off them, but yeah, it was tough. It's just tough to see them go down like that. It was. And, and because I think we've gotten used to this unit, really keeping the team in
Starting point is 00:25:01 games all season that you don't really want to put the blame on the defense because of, of how much more they've had to work to just keep this team competitive in many of the contests. But when you go out there and again, we'll both of us, we'll probably have to watch the film to see where the specific breakdowns on defense were, but just, just too many chances. And those chances come when the offense goes three and out three and out three and out, and just gives the ball right back to the Vikings. And by the fourth quarter, this defense is just gassed. Like they have been all year long because the offense can't sustain drives and get them some much needed rest over there on the sideline,
Starting point is 00:25:45 especially in today's NFL when the defense is already at a disadvantage. So yeah, again, it's a complete team effort for this loss. We both agree on that. But when you look at why the defense was so gassed and the whole reason the Colts had a 33 point lead, it's because of that defense. Yeah, and I think somebody put it out there earlier, but the last seven offensive drives for the Indianapolis Colts I think netted like 50-something yards. Honestly, it was at the point where when the Vikings went for that 4th and 15 there in the fourth quarter, I was like, why aren't they just punting it?
Starting point is 00:26:22 Because they're going to get the ball back. The Colts' offense is just going to punt it right back to you within three plays. So, yeah, it's – I don't know, man. I don't really have too much more to say about this. It is hilarious that this Colts team, this 2022 Colts team, is going to be in the records book forever. Who knows if this will ever be broken because 33 points is insane. Like, a 33-point loss like that, points is insane. Like 33 point loss like that.
Starting point is 00:26:47 I don't know how you come back from that. So hopefully this is just the eyeopening thing that leads to major, major, major changes for the Colts going forward. But I don't know, Andrew, you got anything else to say before we kind of wrap it up here and let these fine people forget about the Colts and start their,
Starting point is 00:27:03 start their drinking on Saturday. I'll end with this.
