It is guest day today on the Locked On Colts podcast, so we are rolling out the red carpet.
Training camp, preseason action, and more on today's show. Let's get to it.
You are Locked On Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast.
Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. All right, Colts fans, thanks so much for tuning in and making us your number one listen
of the day.
This is your daily podcast covering your Indianapolis Colts,
part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
I'm Jake Arthur, and today I'm joined by none other than Andrew Moore,
my compadre from HorseshoeHuddle.com.
I'm sure hopefully you guys caught his episode with us a couple days ago.
He is filling in for Zach Hicks today.
Zach had a family obligation,
but he wanted me to give you all plenty of hugs and kisses, so don't worry about that.
Aside from Horseshoe Huddle, you guys also know Andrew from A Colts Podcast,
so go over and subscribe to them after you're done with us here if you aren't already.
If you're new to the show, again, I'm Jake Arthur. I'm a credentialed member of the Colts Media
and part of the PFWA.
I've been over at Grand Park for Colts Training Camp throughout the last few weeks, so I've been sharing my thoughts with you guys.
And every day, I release my practice notes over again at horseshoehuddle.com.
So if you ever need to know what happened on a particular day, I got you covered.
Andrew is also, he's also been there
several days as well. So he knows what's going on in Westfield. And he too has been throwing all
of his info that he's got out there, out there on Horseshoe Huddle. So today we're going to get you
up to speed on the Colts most recent practice from Thursday. We're going to look a little bit
into the Colts preseason opener that they have this Saturday in Buffalo against the Bills. And I'll play for you guys my conversation
that I had with Colts beat writer George Bremer of the Herald Bulletin. All right, Andrew. So
today wasn't the most action-packed practice. The Colts have a game to get ready for, of course,
in a couple of days. So, you know, not the most physical up-tempo type of thing.
They were out of the pads, and they were back in the shells and shorts that we've seen.
And there also weren't any one-on-ones that we've come to love so much.
It was essentially all 7-on-7s, 11-on-11s, positional stuff, and special teams.
Basically everything they need to tie up to get ready
for a game. Guys who were out on Thursday, cornerback Anthony Chesley, wide receiver
to Michael Harris, offensive lineman Dennis Kelly, linebacker Forrest Ryan, and defensive tackle
Chris Williams. On Wednesday's practice, cornerback Dallas Flowers, he had his right lower leg looked at by trainers, but luckily he was back in action on Thursday.
So starting from the top, kind of a ho-hum day for quarterback Matt Ryan.
Not great, not bad.
He was 10-17 passing during the 11-on-11s, no touchdowns or interceptions.
Michael Pittman Jr. led the way with three catches, no surprise there.
Paris Campbell and Naheem H. led the way with three catches. No surprise there.
Paris Campbell and Naheem Hines both had a pair of catches. So you've seen Matt Ryan plenty so far this summer. What have you thought? You know, it kind of started out hot and the passing game
has kind of petered off a little bit the last few days. Yeah, it seemed like when the pads got put
on, the defense really stepped it up a notch and and we
saw this young wide receiver group kind of struggle a little bit and i i wouldn't say i am i wouldn't
say i'm concerned at this point but it's it's definitely going to be a learning curve for these
guys once once they're out of just just shells and shorts so i think this colts defense has done a
good job of kind
of welcoming them to the nfl being real physical with them and the line of scrimmage not letting
them get free release and contesting every catch i think this guys like alec pierce uh paris campbell
those guys need that as as they get ready for the regular season so matt ryan i think that he's had
some sometimes where he's been off. I think a lot of,
a lot of his incompletions can be attributed to drops because the Colts have had quite a few
drops, especially this week in practice. So I thought just from being down there in Westfield,
seeing Matt Ryan up close, it's just such a different feel than it was last year when,
when we're talking about well number one
is carson went's even going to be ready and then looking at jacob eason and sam ellinger different
feel he's a complete command consistently talking with the wide receivers the tight ends the running
backs on where he wants them to run routes where they need to be when the ball comes out it's he's
going in depth in the small details with this group which i think is much needed
for such an inexperienced uh offense that the colts have yeah and if you guys haven't checked
out i'm sure it's on their website too but the colts on their twitter put out a thing
it's kind of a mic'd up with matt ryan the other day it's it gives a pretty good look behind the
scenes of just how he is as a leader and how he holds guys
accountable. So that's, that's really cool to see. So the passing game has honestly been at the ire
of most people who've been watching practice this week, but today, now, now that seemingly they were
out of pads, uh, there were, there were some big plays in the passing game again today. Some of the guys kind of showed up and showed out.
Paris Campbell is just, God, I almost don't want to talk about it
because it seems like I'm going to jinx him.
You know, you got to knock on wood.
But he's so good.
Like, outside of Michael Pittman Jr.,
you're just kind of waiting for someone else to step up.
And a lot of people, I think,
are afraid to acknowledge that paris campbell has been
that because they're just kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop but no lie like if paris
campbell stays healthy i have zero concerns about the colts having a wide receiver too because he's
it oh yeah he in a period where everyone seems to be dropping stuff over this week he's one of the
more sure-handed ones i would say outside of pman, he has the best hands of the group.
He rarely drops things, and he makes difficult catches too.
He tries to attack the ball, things like that.
Drew Ogletree looked really good again today.
Opened things up in seven-on-sevens with a catch of about 15 or 20 yards.
And then when Nick Foles came in, Ogletree was still in there.
He had a one-handed catch in traffic.
He's just really been – if you take away the label rookie from his name,
it's really hard not to say that he hasn't been the Colts' best tight end.
I think the only thing keeping people from saying that is, yeah,
but he's a rookie.
But if you're looking at everything on the yeah but he's a rookie but if you're
looking at everything on the field he's been their most consistent one out there i've been very
impressed with with drew ogletree and when i first got down to westfield first couple practices it
wasn't ogletree that impressed me it was jelani woods his his size his speed he was making plays
over the middle but the lap but in weeks two and three of camp here
it's been the drew ogletree show and it isn't that that the colts are are staying away from
woods they're giving woods every opportunity to impress drew ogletree is making plays every single
day it's not just here and there he's consistently stacking good days and and that's fantastic to see
especially from a guy that played four years of
wide receiver in college. And this is really only his second year as a tight end. So I think when
we're talking about Drew Ogletree and kind of moving forward, he's been phenomenal in camp.
Now that next step is showing it in preseason games. Can he take that success that he's shown
in practice in a controlled situation
and translate it to on the field, going up against another team, a team that while they're not doing
a full game plan for you, they're also not, they're also out there trying to win and trying
to impress coaches and everybody else around the league. So that's going to be the next step for
Drew Ogletree. And he's definitely one of the guys I'm going to be keeping an eye on come Saturday when they take on the Buffalo bills. Yeah. To that point of
performing in a preseason game. One thing I try to separate in my mind is, you know, we've,
we've kind of got caught up with these training camp superstars before mostly receiver. And,
you know, sometimes it's in one-on-ones that they're really showing out. So it's like,
how are they doing in the actual competitive environment,
seven-on-sevens and 11s?
That's when Ogletree's been making most of these plays,
is in traffic with guys around him, things like that.
So preseason should be a legitimate good barometer for him.
A couple other guys that had decent days,
JoJo Doman came up with an interception today.
Him and Jelani Woods kind of met at the ball.
It bobbled around a little bit, and Doman came away with it before he came down.
Sterling Weatherford, another undrafted linebacker.
He's been heating up a little bit lately, too.
He was someone we talked about a lot on the show coming into camp.
He had a pass breakup that saved a touchdown today against, again, Jelani Woods.
So, yeah, those two young linebackers are probably another pair of guys
that we're going to want to take a look at on Saturday.
I think both have a chance to make the 53-man roster.
I really do, especially JoJo Doman.
And I think you and I talked about this when we were down there together in Westfield.
JoJo Doman is out there with the second team calling the plays, making sure everybody on
the defense in that second unit is lined up correctly.
And he's not the only rookie.
He's the only rookie that's seemingly been out there all the time with the twos.
The other linebacker with the twos is EJ Speed.
And Speed's been with the Colts organization.
This will be his fourth year.
So for Gus Bradley and this defensive staff to trust Doman with that responsibility of calling out the plays and getting every lined up, I think that speaks volumes to the amount of trust that
Gus Bradley has in Doman and just kind of speaks to how smart of a player he is. So yeah, I think
Doman with how smart he is, plus how he's been showing it on the field, Weatherford as well. Both of those guys, I think
have a solid chance to make the 53 man roster. Yeah. If I'm making a roster today, Doman's on it
and actually I made one last Friday and I had him on it. It's a lot easier to make a case for him
than against him right now. And another, the last group we'll talk about here,
it's one we can't really talk about with Zach around,
but the Colts have a kicking competition right now.
Rodrigo Blankenship is the incumbent and, you know, he's kind of,
he's kind of become polarizing, you know, he's money from within 40 yards.
But if once you start to creep back,
it's very hard to rely on his leg strength.
Jake Verity, on the other hand, his leg isn't a great deal stronger,
but he probably does have a little more pop that comes off of it.
So coming into today, they'd only kicked a few times, a few practices. I think Verity had one more make than Blankenship did.
That got evened out today.
Rodrigo went five of five, hitting kicks from 28, 32, 47, and 56 yards,
which is surprising for him, but it's not like a legit field goal block
situation.
Verity made all those except for the 56-yarder.
It was, it was wide, right?
So we don't, we don't ever get a kicker kicker takes from anyone besides me on here. What do
you think about this kicking competition? I think in order for Blankenship to,
to not win this competition, Verity isn't, cannot only beat him by a couple kicks. I think Verity isn't, cannot only be him by a couple of kicks. I think Verity needs to outperform
outperform Blankenship by quite a bit because Blankenship is the incumbent. He's been here for,
for two years now going on his third. And I think while the Colts still want to push Blankenship,
obviously to, cause his, his position is not set in stone here on this Colts team, they know what they're getting with Blankenship.
And he is money within between zero and 45 yards.
And Frank Reich even spoke to it the other day
that they want a guy that can hit from 50 yards,
but it's not necessarily a deal breaker
because a lot of times when they're in that range
for longer 50-yard field goals, a lot of times when they're in that range for longer 50 yard
field goals a lot of times the colts offense is going to be going for it at those times too so
again you definitely want to have somebody that end of game you're confident they can go out there
and make that long kick but at the same time they also want somebody to be accurate within those the
those 10 to 40 yard range, 45 yard
range. And Plankenship does provide that. Yeah, he sure does. I think Frank today said they're
each going to get a half. I think in the past, you know, we we've even seen, you know, one guy
get a game, the other one, they may just go half by half through these three games, but we know it can be tough to bet on kickers,

So guys, before we get into what we're looking for in this preseason opener against the Bills,
let's catch up with our friend George Bremer from the Herald Bulletin.
All right, everybody, I've got George Bremer here. He is the cold speed rider for the Herald
Bulletin up in Anderson. How are we doing today, brother?
Doing good.
Good to be on the record instead of just on the sideline with you.
Yeah, exactly.
You're one of my PICs on the sideline there.
So we are, what is this, number 10, practice number 10.
We're in week number three.
The preseason is coming up in a couple days.
What makes you feel good about this team so far?
I mean, everyone knows it, but the defense has just been outstanding, particularly the defensive secondary. I mean, I think the coverage in this camp we have
not seen before from this football team. A lot of times there's easy receptions in training camp.
I can't remember too many. I could probably count on one hand the number of times any quarterback,
one through four, you felt like it was an easy play. Everything's contested. If a ball's not
intercepted, it's getting batted. It's a contested catch. The defensive secondary is competing at a
really, really high level. It was a struggle last year for the quarterbacks, but that was a whole
different book for different reasons. But no, I mean, this is a good, accurate quarterback. I mean,
Matt Ryan in at Foles, and it seems like every defensive back is playing the ball. They're
aggressive.
It's good to see.
So on the flip side of that, what worries you most about this team right now?
The thing that we were worried about coming in, the depth of this wide receiver court.
Michael Pittman looks like Michael Pittman.
I think he's going to have 100 catches this year.
He looks incredible out there.
Paris Campbell, you just have to stay healthy.
You know that.
It's the same story for him year in, year out.
I think Alec Pierce, there's things he needs to do still to get where you want him to be.
But you see that size.
You see the speed.
You see the athleticism every day and one-on-one.
So I feel confident he's going to hit his numbers.
He's going to hit his ceiling at some point.
But the rest of these guys, you know, Ashton Blum has had flashes.
I think he's coming out really good with Nick Foles.
But the depth here, it feels like, you know, there's not five.
I don't know if there's a fifth or sixth receiver right now in camp
that you feel really strongly about.
Yeah, it seems like everyone's kind of down on the Colts receiver core.
They have a bunch of average guys.
To prove them wrong, everyone's at least got to do their job
and not drop or run the wrong route, what have you.
Matt Ryan's the kind of quarterback that can make all that work if you're just doing what you're supposed to so that's where you're supposed to be yeah hopefully that's
something they can kind of correct here soon um but one thing you and i love to do is play the
hypothetical games throughout practice uh so one on offense one on defense give me a player who
you think could get a surprise roster spot come week one.
Defense one's easy.
JoJo Doman, he's been everywhere.
I think he's going to be the new Jordan Glasgow.
I mean, granted, preseason games, they haven't taken the final exams yet.
We've got a big chunk of this grade still out there.
But so far through 10 camp practices, he's flying around, he's making plays,
he seems like the kind of guy who's going to be, at worst,
a solid core special teamer for you.
Those guys make rosters, and they stay there for a long time.
I feel like he's a football player.
I hate when people say that, but he just has whatever it is, he's got it.
Offensively, it's not a surprise roster spot necessarily but i think drew ovaltree
is going to have a much bigger role than maybe we expected knew he'd probably be on the 53 man
but as a sixth round pick he he might be the number two tight end right now i mean granton's
had a good camp molly cox is molly cox ovaltree's right there with both of those guys and some days
he's ahead of him i think he's gonna see to see, if he continues, again, he's another guy that's got to take this to the game.
Great to do it out here. Got to take this to Saturday. He continues on the direction he's
on right now. He can see quite a few snaps. And it's funny how we came into camp, Ogletree,
I think a lot of us thought, you know, okay, tight end four might be a little bit of a red
shirt year for him. Don't know how much of a role he you know, okay, tight end four might be a little bit of a redshirt year for him.
Don't know how much of a role he's going to have.
Shoot, he might have been the best tight end out here so far through the ten practices.
You could make that argument.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And then, okay, so, again, one offense, one defense.
Who are guys who you think are surprise stars when the actual season gets here?
You and I kind of talked about one earlier.
Yeah, I think Julian Blackman is, you know, defensively i we talked about it out there i think he's got an
all-pro ceiling you know does that mean he's gonna be an all-pro this year i don't know but in this
scheme and his talent level you know we'll see he's coming off an achilles and he's just two
years away from an acl so you know we'll see where he's at physically he looks fine out here he's
moving like you would want him to move.
It's been really kind of amazing.
I just think in this scheme, he has a chance to put up some big numbers.
I mean, you could really see him turn out and be a huge player for this team.
I think, you know, the obvious answer is Paris on offense if he's healthy.
But I think that's not a surprise.
The guy I think who's looked maybe the best versus expectations is Matt Pryor.
He's doing his job.
He's getting better every day out there.
He gets beat.
It's going to happen.
But especially in one-on-ones, he's really starting to figure out Yannick Ngakwe,
who's a very tough player to block.
Is he a pro bowler?
No.
But do I feel right now more solid with him at left tackle than Eric Fisher last year?
Night and day.
You know, absolutely I do.
So I would say Matt Pryor maybe versus expectations might be the offensive guy right now.
I like that pick.
That's a good one because if you don't have to worry about left tackle, you're fine.
And last year that was not the case at all.
Last one for you.
What's one of the biggest things you're looking for this weekend? Whether it's something you want to see from a certain player, position, group, outcome, what have you.
What are you looking for this weekend?
I want to see the first team offense move the ball at some point.
Whether that's that opening drive or something they're going to get to.
Not necessarily have to get a touchdown, but I want to see them move the ball and look fluid.
We've seen it at times, but it's hard to tell right now how much of it's Stephon Gilmore,
how much of it's the secondary, and how much do the receivers need work.
And I think we're going to get a good look at that.
Along with that, the drops need to go down significantly.
And that's across the board.
That's not just the first team.
Everybody in that receiving group needs to catch the football,
and I think that will be important to watch.
Defensively, I want to see the secondary looks as good as it has out here.
I mean, if they're flying around like that, and that, you know,
because you've been here every day.
It's not just Gilmore.
It's not just Kenny Moore.
It's the whole crew.
Everyone is attacking the ball, making a tough arm, yeah.
I want to see, does that continue when it matters?
Yeah, and we talked about earlier, offensively, yes, there's been struggles,
but the run game is not –
it's just not really a thing out here.
So you're wiping out 60% of the offensive game plan.
So with an actual run game in here, probably Phillip Lindsay is who we'll see the most,
Tyson Williams, does the offense look better
and does it have more rhythm to it with an actual run game going with it?
That's a really good point.
And they're not going to game plan, obviously, for this one,
so you're still not going to see everything you would see.
But out here, the run game is play acting.
I mean, it's not real.
And so, you know, however big a part of this offense you think Jonathan Taylor
is going to be, and I think everyone thinks it's going to be a pretty big part,
subtract that from what we're seeing right now, and that's the difference out there.
Yeah, exactly. Well, thanks again for joining me here, bud. On Twitter, it's
George Bremer again. That's at GM Bremer. He is the
Colts Beat Writer for the Harold Bolton, and thanks again for joining us, man. Anytime, Jacob.
Thanks again to George for his time. Again, guys,
go please follow him on Twitter if you're not already,
at GMBremmer.
All right, Andrew.
There is a preseason game this Saturday.
It is Colts at Bills, 4 p.m.
The Colts starters are going to play about a quarter,
just kind of depending on how the flow of the game goes,
maybe a couple drives.
That includes quarterback Matt Ryan.
And we probably won't see the ones again until week three.
Frank said they're, you know,
they're probably not going to play the starters next week because they will
have the lions in for joint practices on Wednesday and Thursday.
So probably not again for another couple of weeks,
skip a week and then it's
week one of the regular season. So a little bit of a rehearsal here. We talked about it on
yesterday's show. It's very, it's pretty risky to play guys, especially that long. What are you
thinking about this? It's it's, I think for me, it depends on the position. I think playing Matt
Ryan for a quarter,
the type of quarterback that Matt Ryan is, he's not a Carson Wentz.
He's not going out there seeking contact.
He's not going to put himself in harm's way.
If guys do get rushing on him, he's probably just going to throw it in the dirt or he's going to do the old Peyton Manning,
just fall in the fetal position on the ground, take the sack and move on.
The guys that I'd be worried about are, are the Jonathan
Taylor's, which I don't think Jonathan Taylor is going to see the field the entire preseason.
I'd be worried about maybe someone like Stefan Gilmore or DeForest Buckner, guys like that,
that are in a more vulnerable position to get hurt. So I think the Colts are going to take it
easy on theirs. Their starters are going
to play, but they are, they're going to be smart about it. And I honestly don't have a problem
with them playing as long as they aren't being put in harm's way. There's always a chance of
injury, whether you're playing in the preseason or even in practice, there's always that chance.
But I think for the Colts, their priority is to getting off to a fast start because not
not only is it because of losing eight years in a row for week one not only is it because
jacksonville's week two and they want to win in jacksonville but this franchise and jim ursa in
particular is just sick of getting off to slow starts and having to dig themselves out of a hole
so they want to get off to the fast start the schedule i think plays a role in it especially when three of your
first four games are against divisional opponents the colts want to be able to compete and and really
grab a stranglehold on the division early in this season so i think all of those that plays a role
into it as why frank reich and this colts team is switching up how
they approach the preseason and i think time will tell whether this is the right strategy or not
yeah and of course like you were getting at this is all kind of about avoiding these
oh and one starts like they've just continued to do year after year there's a lot on the line and
sure it may seem like one game,
but if one game turns into two games, which we've seen years, you just don't want to put yourself
in that position. Right. And so of course, you know, they, they've also done things like moving
practice back a couple hours to try and simulate an actual game day and you know, what a real week
would be like for them. them so we've seen them make
those type of adjustments so they're trying guys they're they're trying to get off the off the slow
start schneid so is there anyone you really want to see play extensively in this game
i think for me it's going to be the wide receivers and the tight ends not all the wide receivers i
don't really need to see michael pitman out there but I do want to see Paris Campbell get some run. I want to see Alec Pierce
get some run. And then all the, the second and second year, which Kylan Granson and the rookie
tight ends, it drew Ogletree and Jelani Woods. We've been talking about how Ogletree has performed
in practice. And then, like I said, bring it to a game, K Kylan Granson a guy that the Colts really need to step
up this year I want to see how he does against other competition that's all that's on the
offensive side of the ball and then on the defensive side of the ball some of the guys
in the secondary I want to see Brandon Faison and Isaiah Rogers two guys that are still battling for
that starting outside corner role opposite of Stephonmore. Maybe see a little Julian Blackman.
We've seen him up close in person in practice and looks like there's no lingering effects
from that Achilles injury, but you still want to get him some game run before week one comes
around.
And then you talk about the fringe guys on the roster, Jojo Doman, Sterling Weatherford,
guys like that that could have an impact on this team and make this roster, Jojo Doman, Sterling Weatherford, guys like that, that could have an impact on this
team and make this roster, but aren't necessarily household names yet. So there's definitely a lot
of guys that you can keep an eye on, even though the final score of the game doesn't really matter.
A lot of these battles are going to be won within these preseason games. And that's the exciting
part about it. That's right where I'm at too. I don't really want to see the established starters that we,
you know, the seven pro bowlers, guys like that. Don't, I'm not worried about it.
It's mainly young guys who just haven't had the developmental snaps yet, who could be playing
significant roles on this team. If just the guy in front of them gets hurt. Bernard Ryman, I want to see him play a ton.
Dayo Adangbo, EJ Speed, guys like that,
I really want to see them play a lot
because they need those developmental snaps
because they're probably not going to get them
during the regular season,
but their number might get called at any point
during the regular season, and they need to be ready.
So those are the kind of guys, the kind of fringe starters. Um, so yeah. Any more thoughts on, uh, on this
preseason game? It's going to be interesting to see because I mean, the Colts are ready to,
to go up against different competition. I feel like they've been going up against the same guys
for three weeks straight. Now this will give us a first chance on the road
and not when while the bills might not be playing their top guys there's still a very well-rounded
roster so i think it's a good barometer to see how this colts team is doing we get to see matt
ryan in his first action so i there there is a lot to watch for in this game but it's going to
be specifically those position battles that are going to make
this game worth it.
Yeah.
So we'll see Matt Ryan, no Josh Allen for the bills though.
Sean McDermott already came out and said, Josh Allen will not be playing.
So it'll be Case Keenum and Matt Barkley.
Are there other quarterbacks?
I believe.
So that's it for us today, guys.
