hello everyone my name is that kakesha resident phil nerd of horseshoe huddle dot com jake arthur is not
joining us today but don't worry have a fun show plan for you guys today we're going to get me just
gushing about some players who were fantastic on
Sunday for this Colts team. Two new addition players, one Tyler Warren, the other Cameron
Bynum, and then we're going to close out this show with me being the Debbie Downer that I
always am. We're going to talk about a couple negatives and things that I want to see the Colts
really clean up going into week two against a really good Denver Broncos team that boast one of the
best defenses in football. But first, let's stick with the positives because this is all about
positivity this week. The Colts won in dominating fashion on Sunday, 33 to 8 over the Miami
Dolphins, broke the, what, 11-year streak of not winning an opening day, won the Jim
Ursae Tribute Day. It was a fantastic showing for everyone involved. But honestly, I think my
first star of the week, my first star of the game, was rookie tight end Tyler Warren. Tyler
Warren finished the game with seven receptions on nine targets for 76 yards, which is 10.6
yards per catch along with one carry for three yards.
So he finished with, again, 79 total yards on eight touches.
This was a great showing for a young player.
He didn't get in the end zone, got really close.
Should have been a pass interference in the end zone.
But we'll let that slide for now.
On his receptions, his nine targets were a game high across either team.
And of his receptions, five first downs were made by Warren.
And then one thing I really want to throw out there is his usage was really interesting.
as well. He had 32 snaps as an inline tight end, 13 snaps out in the slot, six snaps out
wide. So like, again, like a boundary wide receiver. And then two snaps in the back field as
like a fullback. One was one of those goal line runs for Jonathan Taylor. And the other,
of course, was his carry up the middle on fourth and one. So Tyler Warren, we're really
involved in this Colts offense. And there's so many positive things we can talk about.
Let's start it off with just how he was used as a pass catcher. We see.
saw the Colts have this very concerted effort to get him the ball in space and let him create
after the catch. And he was a player that they relied on to get those big yards. I mean, I think
one of the most important messages this team sent early in the game was our first play is going
to Tyler Warren. They did that little play action bootleg, threw it to Tyler Warren in the
flat. He was able to get up the field. And instead of ducking out of bounds, he laid a big hit
on the defensive back to kind of set the tone for the game. And again, from there,
the Colts were able to be the bullies in this outing.
So they got him the ball early and often.
He was their go-to guy off of play action.
And he was also the guy that Daniel Jones liked to go to against the Blitz
with their little spot concepts and their little hitches over the middle.
Warren was able to get to his own beating spot, sit down, get those catches in space,
and then create after the catch for a couple extra yards.
So him and Daniel Jones built a really great rapport.
One of his biggest catches of the day came on that.
drive as well where he had a little out and up of the left sideline went up and got the ball in
space a good ball by daniel jones but even better catch from tyler warren so we kind of saw a little
bit of everything from being the scheme touch guy in in the flats to being the blitzbeater over the
middle and then we got that vertical shot down the left sideline as well so as a past catcher
tyler warren was everything as advertised you know he wasn't going to be this this burner in man
coverage that's just going to cook every single player that he goes against you know like a
Travis Kelsey type of tight end.
But if you need him to be a guy who can create after the catch, to be a guy that is smart
enough to beat zone, and then who can slip unnoticed down the field, that's exactly
what Tyler Warren brings to a passing game in the NFL.
So I thought he lived up to all those expectations as a pass catcher from day one.
But the one area that he really exceeded expectations, especially for me, is as a run blocker.
You know, there were a lot of people that kind of came out throughout the draft.
process as being, you know, low on Tyler Warren's run-blocking ability.
All throughout the college season, he was billed as this two-way tight end who can block
and pass catch at a high level.
And then once we got into draft season, we got into the just over-evaluation of everything,
Tyler Warren's run-blocking kept coming down across the board for a lot of evaluators.
But for me personally, I was always very high on Warren as a run-blocker.
And I think we saw why on Sunday, you know, he wasn't really asked to do the Moelly Cox like dirty work of like, you know, you're going to have to seal the edge here.
You're going to have to drive a defensive end off the line.
But what we saw is the Colts like to get him out in space or trying to get him to that second level with linebackers and safeties.
And then occasionally pulling him around out in front on like screenplays like Ashton Doolin sweet play.
He was out in front on that play.
And when he was able to get in space and be used against.
against, again, those safeties and linebackers as a run blocker,
I thought he was the best run blocker in the game for the Colts.
You know, it was just such a big asset in this area of the game.
And it's kind of not getting talked about enough because he was so productive as a pass
catcher, but his run blocking was arguably better than his past catching in this game.
And I'm so intrigued on what this means for him going forward because I think the Colts
could utilize him more as a fullback going forward.
because again, if you're the fullback, you're going to get out in space.
You're going to be that lead blocker against linebackers, against safeties.
Now, you don't want to do that too much with him because you don't want to expose him to those big hits when linebackers are feeling hard.
But I'm just so intrigued by what he could be as a run blocker now because I was high on him coming into this.
But when I saw the way that he was finishing blocks, when I saw the way he was driving these guys off the ball,
it really was some special stuff in the run game from Tyler Warren.
And it reminded me a lot of George Kittle.
You know, it looked a lot like George Kittle in this game.
Again, just from that ability to get out in space, get his hands on defenders, lock them up,
and just keep those feet driving and move them down the field.
So, you know, Tyler Warren's pass catching was outstanding in this game.
And I think, you know, he has a high floor in this offense because a lot of what he did
is easy to be replicated.
But the run blocking truly was a difference maker for the Colts in this game.
And I kind of think he's going, like I kind of said in the.
preseason that he can be like their Jack Doyle in the run game. And I think he really did show it in
this one. So Tyler Warren, man, I mean, this is probably the best debut we've seen from a Colts rookie
since Quentin Nelson back in 2018. Quentin Nelson was obviously a top six pick. Warren was the
14th overall pick in this draft. So a little bit more down the line there for Warren. But
I can't remember being as excited about a Colts rookie as I am right now with Tyler Warren. He just
what out there looked like a pro.
from the first minute of the game was a focal point of the passing game,
was a dominant force in the run game.
And again, the Colts utilized him in a variety of ways from 32 inline snaps,
13 slot snaps, six snaps out wide, and two snaps in the backfield.
I think we could see a little bit more diversity coming forward.
You know what?
I'll even throw this prediction out here right now because the Denver Broncos is coming up.
I think he hits at least five snaps in the backfield this upcoming game against the Broncos.
If you actually look at what the Colts biggest run from that Broncos game last year,
which I know is a heartbreaking run to look at because a certain running back dropped the ball at the goal line.
But if you look at what the Colts did on that run,
they had Drew Ogletree in the backfield as a fullback leading the way on that play that Taylor broke free and got to nearly scoring a touchdown.
And we saw them roll out a couple fullback looks against the Broncos that were really effective in the running game.
So I think we can get Warren in the backfield a good five, six, seven times against the Broncos.
And it might really help open up that run game.
And then again, I still want to see the Wildcat quarterback a little bit with Warren.
But overall, this was just such a great showing from Tyler Warren.
You know, anyone who had their doubts and had skepticism about him, I still think there are reasons to maybe be a little skeptic of how high he can be in this offense.
But the overall floor of what he's going to bring as a pass catcher, as a.
a run blocker and as this weapon that can be the focal point of the team, I think Tyler
Warren's future is so bright in Indianapolis. As long as he stays healthy, which is going to be
a concern, which is how physical he plays the position. Again, I keep bringing up George Kittle.
We look at what happened with Kittle with the 49ers. He's been banged up a lot because of his
bruising style. So we'll have to see if Warren can stay healthy with his style of play. But I mean,
heck, as of right now, it's working for the Colt. It's working for him.
I'm loving the way he plays football.
He is a throwback player at tight end, and he is really fun to watch.
And I think the Colts got a good one in Tyler Warren.
But speaking of Colts getting a good one, they didn't only make moves in the draft this year.
They did get some free agent signings.
And the second biggest one, excuse me, was Cameron Bynum at free safety.
And he made a huge impact in his first game.
So coming up, I'm just going to go on a beautiful rant about how awesome Cameron Bynum was in his debut
with the Colts.

one of their top players in this past draft.
But one of their top players in free agency this past off season was Viking safety Cameron
Bynum.
And this was a player that I was really high on the Colts getting, mainly because, like again,
if you were not going to get the Jesse Bates level free safety that you were looking for
for the system, the next best thing you can get is a player like Bynum who has the past history
of playing outside corner, of playing slot corner, can play strong safety, can fit against
the run, can play over top.
He is just a really cerebral, smart playmaking player at that free safety position.
So again, if you're not going to get that guy, he's just going to sit over the top and be a ranging monster,
the next best thing you can get is a player that makes your defense just as, again, diverse as you are going for.
So I think Cameron Biden was such a great fit for this team.
And we saw in week one how good he could be in this system.
Made his impact early in this game with an interception on the first drive against Tua.
and we saw the wonderful celebration afterwards.
I think if anyone can correct me here, if I'm wrong,
but I think that was the Greg Jennings celebration.
He was grabbing at his leg,
which is a throwback to that old Madden glitch with Greg Jennings.
And then the little dance he did in the end zone
was also like a Madden glitch where a player fell down.
It just was slamming his elbows against the ground.
Really funny stuff there.
If you got the reference,
I know it's not like the most universal reference,
but to me I thought it was pretty great.
So we saw just everything that he brings,
again, from the playmaking to the fun atmosphere.
And then, like he said in his post-game presser,
where once one guy gets a turnover,
everybody wants to get the turnover,
especially when they're seeing what he's doing in the end zone once he got his.
So you see Kenny Moore come back the next series with the force film.
We see Liotto, Latsu, come away with an interception later.
His energy was just infectious for this defense.
So just talking away from the film for a second,
just having a guy like that, again,
who brings such a fun style that everyone wants to,
emulate at such a great boost to your defense. And that's why I love the signing in the off
season. But looking at what he was able to do on film, I think this was a very, very complete game
for Cam Bynum. We got to see him in the passing game making multiple plays in the ball. He had
two pass breakups in this game. Arguably his first pass breakup was his best play of the game,
even more so than the reception, where he jumped the end-breaking route to Alec Ingold over the
middle of the field came like this close to getting a second interception in the first half of the
game. And, you know, he certainly saw it. He was he was kicking himself for that one. Could have
had two celebrations in one game. But yeah, he made a great play on that one coming down and robbing
over the middle of the field. And then we saw a lot of great run fits from him as well, which is going
to be so vital this year with, again, the Colts are going to be in a lot of nickel defense.
They're going to need the safeties. They're going to need corners being aggressive and physical.
fitting against the run.
So seeing a player like Bynum coming flying downhill and just reading and
diagnosing the opposing offense quickly is so vital.
So, yeah, this was just a really complete game from Bynum.
And just having a guy like him, again, just makes everyone so much more comfortable and
confident in what they're doing because you can rely on him on the back end.
Like he's not going to be this super rangy guy, but a player who just knows where he needs
to be, you feel comfortable where like, hey, if the scheme says,
that I have helped to the interior, and that interior is Cameron Bynum, I feel comfortable
running him into that player because Bynum's going to rob that spot. Same thing with the deep,
with the deep routes or the deep post or anything like that. You can feel comfortable playing
your outside leverage when Bynum is there over the top because he can trust him. He's coming
from such a difficult scheme in Minnesota where he had to be on his P's and Cues every single
play. He had to know exactly where he needed to be or was going to be a long touchdown for the
opposing offense.
So he really needed to, like, be on top of everything there in Minnesota.
Now you're bringing that to the Colts where, look, this defense is very difficult as well
to understand, but he's seen it all in Minnesota.
Brian Flores throws everything at his safeties.
So getting such a smart player, like buying him over here, again, these guys know what to expect
from him day in and day out.
And when he's the guy over the top, it makes life really comfortable.
the corner. So you have Chavarious Ward attacking downhill with with a lot more quickness and
purpose because he doesn't have to worry about what's behind him. You have Zaire Franklin playing
a little bit better in coverage as well. You have Kenny Moore playing a lot more comfortable.
Like I thought we saw the best of this Coles defense and a lot of that had to do with Cam Bynum.
His usage wasn't as diverse as what I would like. But again, just having him on the back end is
great. He had 32 snaps at free safety, three in the slot.
two on the defensive line and one lined up in the box.
And again, I think we're going to see that stuff change quite a bit going forward
where you're going to want to be more diverse with this defense.
We're going to show a lot more stuff where he's going to be in the box.
He's going to be in the slot.
And we're going to rotate pre and post snap to really just muddy those reads.
I'm so excited for what Luana Rua can do with him in the future
because there was one play in the second half where they were showing two high safeties.
and it looked like it was going to be, again, like a typical cover two, cover four,
and they rotated right at the snap to Kenny Moore dropping back to safety.
And I think it was Bynum that came up and played more as like a linebacker post-snap.
And you were getting this really just chaotic look where your strong safety in your nickel corner
where the overtop safeties and your free safety was over the middle, robbing the middle.
And you can do that because you have a player like Bynum,
because you trust him with his physicality, his eyes,
and his ability to read a defense being there over the middle.
You're not going to do that with most free safeties
because sometimes you're so strict in free safety goes deep,
strong safety comes over the middle.
We can't interchange them because we don't trust those guys in other respective roles.
But when you have players like Cross and Bynum,
you can certainly trust that.
You can trust their instincts,
trust their ability to read from different positioning.
So all this to say, I know Charverius Ward was the big signing.
This offseason, Charverius Ward was very good on Sunday as well.
But Cameron Bynum, I think, is going to be the X factor this season.
That's why I picked him as the X factor going into the year.
And I'm staying by that after week one.
He is going to be the most important part of this close defense aside from pass rushers
because he is the engine that charges this pass coverage.
He makes everyone else more comfortable.
He takes away the middle of the field.
He plays over the top of the defense.
He allows them to disguise what they want to do.
He is going to be such a big part of this team.
going forward and I'm just pumped about not only the rest of this year with Bynum but for the future
with Bynum as well in Indy so a great great start for him and I just love seeing what he was able to do
in this past game but coming up guys I can't be all sunshine and rainbows you know I'm an eternal
pessimist when it comes to the Colts and football in general so I have to talk all about the couple
things I didn't love with this Colts team and where they really need to shore some things up
coming up against a playoff potential team in the Denver Broncos.

Just to correct myself there, you go to game time and get tickets to the game and then you can play on
fan duel to really just extenduate that that experience there that that's why i got mixed up
there you can really add it all in one uh but guys every day as we're back talking all about the colts
and dolphins and what the colts need to clean up going into this next week it's really not a ton
to clean up uh because we saw a lot of good from this colts team uh i would say of the 46 players
that dressed i would say like 43 44 them had great games the other two probably just had good
games and it's really hard to kind of nitpick and and talk about like what went wrong with this
team if i really really wanted to get down into it and say like some concerns i had going forward
i think the special team's kick coverage could have been a little cleaner earlier in the game
i think they kind of right of the ship later in the game but in that like first half those first
couple kick returns uh that were there for the miami dolphins the kick coverage was a little bit
loose. You don't want opposing teams starting at the 45, you know, at the 40 yard line.
You want to, the goal now is to tackle them before the 35, which is where the touchback would
be. So as long as you can get them down before that 35 yard line, I would consider it a win.
There were just a couple that got past that 35 that concerned me a little bit.
And you certainly want to just keep that in contain a little bit, especially don't want to
give up any scores on kick returns this year because that, again, those are how you swing games
right there. So that's certainly one. I think the run defense, I'm not really in the boat where
I'm concerned yet, but I need to see what it looks like against a different team like the
Denver Broncos this upcoming week. You know, the Miami Dolphins are very explosive in the ground
game. And Devon A. Chan, for my money, like, if you were to give every running back in the NFL
20 carries and guarantee they're not going to get hurt on those 20 carries, A Chan's arguably a top
three to five rusher in football so it's hard for me to really gauge like how much to be concerned
about this run defense after going against him in week one especially when they were so dominant
against the pass it's easier to let up a couple of of plays on the run so i want to see what it looks
like against the denver broncos with jk dobbins r j harvey they're fine players but they're not
at the same level as a divan a chance so i'm more so just monitoring the run defense right now
certainly some concerning signs in terms of defensive tackles getting driven off the ball when Grover Stewart's out of the game.
One of our biggest concerns coming into the year was that.
So I really want to see how that looks against a different team.
But more so just need to see how that looks in the next couple of weeks before I really called a concern.
One thing I would say, not really to correct with Daniel Jones, but just to point out with Daniel Jones,
I do think there were a couple of moments where he could have been a bit more aggressive, either over the middle of the field,
or pushing the ball to the boundary or, you know, just certain moments where I think he really
could have pushed the ball a little bit more.
And we saw him take like the way checkdown option of, you know, running back in the back,
just out of the back field or a pass catcher three yards down the field.
I think against better teams, you're going to have to push the ball a little bit more.
You're going to have to layer some throws and get throws over defenders.
So we'll see if that was just a, hey, we're killing this Miami Dolphins team.
I don't really need to force anything.
Let me get to the checkdown.
or if that's the sign of things to come and he's a little bit concerned layering the ball over
defenders.
Again, this is such a wait and see thing because we're in week one.
You know, it's hard to really say exactly what this team is going to be following just one
game and one data point to start the year.
But it's something I'm certainly looking forward to going forward with him.
The Colts running attack on offense technically didn't have the greatest showing in terms of
yards per carry.
They had 40 carries, but only 3.9 yards per carry.
There were quite a few run stuffs.
I was on a radio show this morning talking about that actually,
and I wasn't too concerned off the film with that one.
When it came to the running game,
I thought the processes were typically good.
It was just one guy not getting a good enough block
on pretty much every run stuff,
or Jonathan Taylor just not driving his feet hard enough,
or the handoff being a little slow.
Like it was all these little things that contributed to making the run game
not look as good as what it probably should have been.
So I'm not terribly concerned about that one.
Honestly, the biggest concern probably going forward is just the health of the cornerback
room, which has been our biggest concern all off season with Justin Wally down.
You know, he's already out for the year.
Juju Brent's no longer with the Colts.
Jalen Jones, I'm assuming, is going to go on IR at some point this week.
And now Traverius Ward is in the concussion protocol.
It seems unlikely like he's going to play this week, but we'll have to monitor that
throughout the week.
So the Colt cornerback room on Sunday could be down to Xavier Howard, Mackay Blackman,
Jonathan Edwards, and then a practice squad call-up.
That's not the greatest sign in the world when you're going against a potential
playoff team in the Denver Broncos.
So that's going to be a big concern, I think, going into that game.
But, yeah, it's kind of hard to really nickpick.
Yeah, Ben, Ben's good point here in the comment section.
Penalties in the red zone.
Penalties just in general.
You want to keep those down.
there were a couple of moments where they got a little bit hold happy and it pushed the offense off track
and they got lucky getting penalties that bounce them back.
Honestly, I think the bigger thing that really talk about in the low red zone is just converting those red zone trips into touchdowns.
You know, getting threes against the Miami Dolphins is one thing because the way that Dolphins offense was playing,
they were never going to hit 20 points.
So the second you got to 20 points, just keep adding on more points and like through threes and you don't have to worry about going for it.
on fourth or being aggressive there.
But I think against a team like the Denver Broncos, you're going to need to convert those
opportunities because if you're going to get like a 14, 15, 16, 17 play drive like we saw
in week one, those opportunities need to be converted into touchdowns because getting just three
out of that is kind of demoralizing for your offense, you know, where we controlled the ball,
we had it for 11 straight minutes, but all we got was three, like they can get that back
at a second. If you can get seven, though, that just makes it such a demoralizing thing for the
opposing team. So I think finishing in the red zone is going to be a big thing. I want to see a
little bit more creativity in the red zone from the Colts offense. I think they missed an opportunity
to use the QB run game a little bit more, more so than I'm not talking just QB sneaks. I mean more
so like read option type stuff or RPR type stuff. Maybe Tyler Warren at quarterback would
have been fun. Tyler Warren as Wildcat quarterback. I'm going to keep bringing that up.
because I want to see it a little bit.
I want to see a little bit more diversity in the red zone.
Maybe just isolating Josh Downs.
Isling Josh Downs would be a huge thing that you can do in the red zone
because he is your best separator.
So again, it's not something that I want to say is a big concern right now
because I wasn't terribly concerned about it coming into the year.
But I want to see a little bit more diversity and creativity in the red zone,
especially outside that five-yard line.
They look good once they got inside the five-yard line
because they were able just to power the,
way into the end zone, but what can you do between the five and the 15? Because that's going to be
the key for this team. You can't just get three every time you get to the red zone. This is a league
where you need to get more, you need to get points and bunches, especially if you're going to be a
ball controlled offense where you're going to hold the ball for most of the game like they want
to be. If you get seven on those drives, you're really just killing the energy and effort that the
other team is showing. So I really think that you're going to want to convert. I mean, it's not like a
coach here. You want to convert those opportunities as much as possible, but I want to see more
creativity to get them to convert those opportunities. So yeah, overall, I think this whole
segment really wasn't about like me being a Debbie Downer or pessimistic. It was more so like,
there's a couple things I had my eye on going forward to see if they're going to be concerns.
But when you win 33 to 8 in week one where your rookie tight end shows out and your star safety
shows out and other players show out your offensive line looks the way the offensive line did
what can I really complain about in this showing you know did Daniel Jones not have 20 yards
per attempt you only had 10 or whatever like there's not too much I can complain about in this
game here from the Colts and hopefully it's that way the rest of the year hopefully the
Colts are just doing this every single weekend so we really don't have to ever really complain
but I know that's an unrealistic thing we're going to be in for a dog fight this week
weekend to Denver Broncos. And we're going to have you covered here on Lockdown Colts for the
rest of the week talking all about Colts and Broncos. This is going to be a playoff atmosphere
for this Colts team, especially again, if you have hopes of making the playoffs, beat this Broncos
team that you're likely competing with for one of those spots. That would go a long way
into adding more optimism and excitement to this Colts season. But I want to thank you guys for
