Starting point is 00:00:00 Sunday afternoon is a formality between two teams in the Colts and Jaguars who just need to be put out of their misery and get to the real work of the offseason. But there is a game to talk about nonetheless. Let's get to it. You are locked on NFL crossover part of the Locked On Podcast Network. Your team every day. All right. Thank you for tuning in and making us your first listen of the day. This is a collaboration between your daily podcasts covering the Indianapolis Colts and the Jacksonville Jaguars. And as always, this crossover Thursday is presented by PrizePix.
Starting point is 00:00:46 Download the app and use code LOCKEDONNFL to win $50 instantly when you play just $5. What is up and good morning, everybody. This is Jake Arthur of Locked On Colts, joined by my good buddy, Tony Wiggins of Locked On Jaguars. And we are about to take you through the final ride of this regular season for the Colts and the Jaguars. We're going to talk about the three biggest keys to victory for each team, what's going on with the Colts.
Starting point is 00:01:16 But first, what's going on with the Jaguars? And, Tony, it's week 18. This thing is almost over. What is the Mac Jones experience like for the Jaguars right now? Oh, man, it's what it is. And it just lets you know how much they miss Trevor Lawrence. And Mac has shown to be competent. And I think he's going to have a 10-year career as a backup
Starting point is 00:01:41 and maybe a spot starter in his future. But as far as him being a starter, I don't think he's going to, you know, garner much attention to be a starter in this league anymore. Gosh, yeah, that's kind of all you can hope for at this point is just a guy who can kind of carry the ship while the main character's out. We are obviously very used to that here in Indy. But, you know, these teams are not, they're not vying for the postseason this time around you know we're out at the Colts facility today just kind of asking around a little bit like you know you're obviously not playing for the postseason so you know what are you hoping to see in this one I'll ask you the same question you know from the Jaguars perspective what are
Starting point is 00:02:24 you just hoping to see in this one more more good tape from some of the good young players that uh have shown themselves to be uh capable of doing the things that you need to do in order to win long term and um that's the main thing Brian Thomas Jr. is a superstar and oh you know yeah yeah there's no doubt about that I think he's already a top-ten wide receiver. When you watch him play, he plays with such confidence, and he's so fluid with everything that he does. He's measured. He knows when to change speeds, and he hits a different gear.
Starting point is 00:02:58 He's a very, very good football player, and he's the type that over the last couple of weeks, they really, well, they probably should have known this anyway. I get on them about that, but they really have a guy that you can come out every single week when you do get healthy, when you do get Trevor Lawrence back, you can come out every single week and you can really force feed him. You can do to him or with him what teams like Cincinnati does with Jamar Chase and what Minnesota does with Justin Jefferson, and that is, I don't care if he's covered or not, figure it out. Get him the ball.
Starting point is 00:03:36 Run everything through him early to get the defense moving that way to really ease up things for somebody else. That's how good I think he is, good of a player he is, is that even when teams try to stop him, there's still a way for you to be able to manufacture touches for him or use him as a decoy to the point where you can really, really get a lot of stuff done. Yeah, I think he's been a really pleasant surprise.
Starting point is 00:04:00 He was, for the Colts over here, he was probably one of the top two or three targets that, you know, from our show, we really had an eye on. But we, I don't even think we expected what he's doing now. I think we kind of expected, like, what Alec Pierce is doing. You know, specializing downfield, being that big play guy. But I think Thomas has shown a lot more of a complete game. And with a loaded rookie class of receivers thomas is still right there near the top and i mean the season's pretty much written like he has officially had a bona fide star season
Starting point is 00:04:31 yeah well the thing for me i was big on him and uh during the draft process when we did our uh preseason shows and when we did our preseason mock draft i I actually took Adonai Mitchell for the Jaguars because Brian Thomas Jr. was gone. You want to switch? Right. So I picked him because BTJ was gone. Somebody picked him earlier, and I think it might have been a pick right before me,
Starting point is 00:04:58 and I was like really, really hot about that too, man, because I was like, I wanted Brian Thomas Jr. But he didn't surprise me, man. I was big i wanted brian thomas jr but um he didn't surprise me man i was big on him the whole time and i said that there wasn't that much difference between him and the guys going in the top 10 i got a lot of pushback from a lot of people and the thing that i warned folks about with brian i said y'all y'all are really looking at him and you're trying to just make him one thing right you're not really looking at him the right way because you're doing the same thing to him that people did to Justin Jefferson when he played with Jamar Chase at LSU.
Starting point is 00:05:32 Yeah. Jefferson was a year ahead. You know, Chase, he opted out of his last year. He didn't play. And then Justin Jefferson went late in the first round. The Jaguars had two first-round picks, and they took Caleb on Chase on with the second one, and they didn't take Justin Jefferson.
Starting point is 00:05:46 And Philly took some little wide receiver that I don't even know his name anymore. And that backfired. I said, y'all doing the same thing. You're doing the same thing. Neighbors who was built just like Jamar Chase and is undeniably good, you're looking at the other guy on the other side saying,
Starting point is 00:06:01 ah, he just benefited from the other dude. It makes you wonder what Les Miles is doing with those two receivers and Jaden Daniels. You know what I'm saying? It's like, why y'all ain't win the whole championship? But, you know, he is really, really good, and people sort of gave him the, oh, he's the other guy. They kind of gave him the Reggie Wayne treatment.
Starting point is 00:06:22 You know what I'm saying? He's the other guy. And it turns out, no, he's his own man, and he's very, very good. And I'll tell you right now, it'd be a toss-up between him and Malik neighbors if somebody would say, okay, which one of those guys do you take now? I guarantee you
Starting point is 00:06:35 half the GMs would take Brian Thomas Jr. No, Thomas is probably top 10 if you redraft. If you redraft last year's today, he's probably top 10. He'd go before Rome, and he might go before. I think he'd probably go before Marvin Harrison Jr. Yeah, I think for the Colts who tried to get into the top 10 and were interested in Malik Nabors and Brock Bowers,
Starting point is 00:06:57 I think they were interested in Thomas too. But knowing now, if they knew then what they know now, I think Thomas is easily the pick for them. But what about the defensive side of the ball? You know, it looks like still kind of the most common cast of characters, Josh Heinz Allen, still whooping, Tron Walker doing this thing. So what are you hoping to see from the defensive side of the ball in this last one?
Starting point is 00:07:20 Those guys you mentioned, I don't have, I don't really want, they don't even have to play the ones you already mentioned. There's some other guys though, some young players, Jarrion Jones, who is playing in a slot for them, a rookie out of Florida State, third round pick, Mason Smith, their second round pick, who until recently had been a healthy scratch for most of the season. I want to see them.
Starting point is 00:07:43 I want to see Devin Lloyd continue to show that he's somebody they can count on moving forward also. They got to make a decision on his fifth-year option come next year. And so far, if you ask me if I think they're going to do it, no. But you just never know. I just want them to play hard and show that – show whoever's going to be the new head coach or the GM. If they do make a change, they need to go out and put some good stuff on tape for people.
Starting point is 00:08:11 Some other guys in the secondary, Monteric Brown. I really want to see the young guys. Trayvon and Josh are going to be who they are. They're not only really, really good players. They're solid people. They're the kind of people you want on your team, in your building, on and off the field with a lot of class. I don't worry about them very much. I just want the young players, the young guys that really, really have to show whoever's going to be running this team next year that they don't have to go out and find a replacement for them. Yeah, that's kind of the big mystery going into the final game of the season with teams like the Colts and Jaguars who aren't playing anything, do they pack it in or do they want to give it one last hurrah?
Starting point is 00:08:48 And like you said, there's going to be changes this offseason, probably among the decision makers. You're kind of putting an audition on tape for if you're going to be kept around as well. So, yeah, interesting one for the Jaguars. I feel better about them in this Week 18 matchup than I did even earlier in the year when they handled the Colts pretty well. But coming up here in a moment, we're going to talk about what's going on with the Colts. As always, week to week, there is just a bunch of stuff to always talk about.
Starting point is 00:09:16 So we'll get to that in just a moment. I love going to live events, whether it's sports, music, theater, or comedies. Some of my favorite memories of 2024 were going to a handful of shows and concerts. The energy and the excitement were just unforgettable. You're out there creating core memories. Now, Game Time has made it even easier to get tickets for your favorite events with their new feature, Game Time Picks. This feature filters out all the fluff to show you only the incredible deals on great seats
Starting point is 00:09:45 so you don't have to waste time searching through thousands of tickets. Recently, I was on there browsing the GameTime app for a couple things coming up in the spring around Indy using that GameTime app, but with GameTime picks, I found amazing deals and I could even see the view from my seat before buying, which is incredibly important, especially with like newer venues. If you guys haven't been out to like the Fisher's Event Center, you want to see what the seats, what the seat looks like before you actually get out there. The Super Deal was particularly impressive. It offered great seats at unbeatable prices. Plus the apps all in pricing shows the total cost up front with no surprise fees at checkout. Cause that is one of the worst parts about buying tickets online is all the surprise, you know,
Starting point is 00:10:28 itemized list of crap that they send you there at the end, but not with game time, take the guesswork out of buying tickets with game time, download the game time app, create an account and use code locked on NFL for $20 off of your first purchase terms apply again, create an account and redeem code L O C K E D O N NFL for $20 off download your first purchase. Terms apply. Again, create an account and redeem code L-O-C-K-E-D-O-N-N-F-L for $20 off. Download GameTime today.
Starting point is 00:10:50 What time is it? GameTime. All right, so let's get to talking about these Colts, if you don't mind, Tony. All right, I'm going to just cut right to it. I'm just going to get right to it, Jake. What the hell y'all think about getting beat by the Giants when y'all still have something to play for, man? What happened to you? You learn a lot about guys when this comes up.
Starting point is 00:11:12 And that was kind of the icing on the cake. The real deciding factor on who's got to go, who's got to stay. It was just it was the latest in what has become kind of a disturbing trend. Going back to 2021, really, the Colts having games that you win and you're in, or you need to win to survive for the possibility to get into the postseason. I know. I'm very aware. Oh, yeah. It starts with the Jaguars, and they just don't show up. So 2021, Carson Wentz, they lose that game at home against the Raiders.
Starting point is 00:11:46 If they would have won, they would have got in. The very next week, they're in Jacksonville, a place they're cursed to play in. They cannot win there. Terrible Jaguar team, too. Yeah, the fans were in the stadium with clown masks. They were saying, get all these guys out of here, and they trounced the Colts.
Starting point is 00:12:04 And since then, the Colts have really finished no better than one and one in the final two games of the season. So the Giants, which I think everyone would have agreed were the worst team in the NFL going into this. This time last week, I was talking to our friend Patricia Trena. I asked her, what can the Giants do to win? And she said nothing. The only thing they're good at is losing. And I was like, what can the Giants do to win? And she said, nothing. The only thing they're good at is losing. And I was like, okay. I was like, the Colts will probably win this one.
Starting point is 00:12:30 It may not be handily, but they should win. And they go out and have one of the worst defensive performance I've ever seen from them. So heads are going to roll when the offseason gets here. Gus Bradley kind of hinted at some potential personnel changes just in this last game of the year. He said maybe nothing drastic, but if there was going to be anything drastic, they probably wouldn't tell us in that setting.
Starting point is 00:12:55 But I do think they intend on making at least a couple tweaks here. But that's kind of what I'm looking at here is do they pack it in? Do they have one last hurrah in them? The only thing I really know about this team is that you, you can't, you cannot count on them to do what you expect week in and week out. They have not played complimentary football in one game this season, either the defense does well or the offense does well or neither, but both sides of the ball have not played as a cohesive unit at any point this season. Either the defense does well or the offense does well or neither,
Starting point is 00:13:29 but both sides of the ball have not played as a cohesive unit at any point this year. The defense will play awesome teams like the Bills, Detroit, Minnesota, and they'll do really well. And then they'll go against the Giants and Drew Lockwood, the best game of his career. The Jaguars will have their best performance of the season and break theirwood the best game of his career the jaguars will have their best performance of the season and break their own fourth streak to start the year you don't know what to expect with this team so um there has been chatter of like you know what's going on the building there's there's been questions about the culture and everything i don't know if it's a culture problem as much as it is. I think guys are just complacent.
Starting point is 00:14:08 The teams I mentioned going back to 2021, it's mostly the same starting lineup from top to bottom. Like 2022 was a disaster for the Colts. They're 4-12-1 the Jeff Saturday year. They have 16 of the 22 of the same starters now from a team that did that poorly. So I think this is just about surviving one more game and getting to the offseason and making the necessary changes that you got to do.
Starting point is 00:14:36 There's got to be a lot of hurt feelings this offseason, but you got one more game to get through first. How much is it, and I've seen this myself, when we had Gardner Minshew here, the stats said one thing, one more game to get through first. How much is it, and I've seen this myself, when we had Gardner Minshew here, the stats said one thing, but the actual play, like when you watch them play, it says something else. How much of this do you attribute to those players knowing,
Starting point is 00:15:01 like they could like Anthony Richardson as a person and as an athlete, but they may not be as really, really confident about his ability to be a full-time quarterback in this league and especially when the taps out and tap the stuff out substitute it out because he's tired so man you need a break how uh how much is that how much of that do you think affects those other players on the team so i think it's the offense at large that you know the the defense may be questions at times the odd thing is for for all of his faults i think the team rallies around anthony richardson far more than they do joe flacco okay uh anthony never lost the locker room during that whole saga at the beginning of the year when he was not performing well and it came out that he just didn't really have a quarterback's mentality yet and then when he got benched and when he was not performing well and it came out that he just didn't really have a
Starting point is 00:15:45 quarterback's mentality yet and then when he got benched and when he came back he never lost the locker room those guys really rallied around him and it's very evident they almost don't have a chance to win unless he's the quarterback i mean he's got a lot of he's got a lot of flaws but he's also got the ability to make magical things happen. He's kind of that type of player. And he's also really clutch. We have seen him come through in the clutch a handful of times so far this season, whereas Joe Flacco has turned the ball over at the end of games. So they really don't have much of a chance if it's not Anthony out there.
Starting point is 00:16:24 But with that said said the injury thing is is becoming quite a problem uh you have to be able to count on your quarterback if anybody being out there week in and week out now that's when you have a quarterback who also is running you know a third or half the time you're gonna he's gonna get bumps and bruises and everything but the fact of the matter is he hasn't been able to stay on the field obviously only played in four games last year he's dealing with back spasms right now that cost him last week said he was crawling around his house last tuesday so the guy's back is not good turns out it could be a chronic issue so now the the spotlight is
Starting point is 00:17:03 on the off season of hey the guy you're hoping is your franchise quarterback may have a long-term back issue because he told us just today from his own mouth he's been dealing with this since eighth grade that's a bad injury too man but yeah right but that it it was never as bad as it is now and an mri revealed like a disc issue recently yeah so it's not great. So that's one thing is, is he going to play? My guess would be probably not.
Starting point is 00:17:30 They didn't sound super optimistic about it. Right. And if he was crawling around his house as of last week, that doesn't sound promising as if he's going to play. And we've seen Joe Flacco lose to the Jaguars already once this year. Yep. You're right. So yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:44 And then, so I mean, what do they need? already once this year. Yep, you're right. So, yeah. So, I mean, what do they need? When I look at the Colts, I like their receivers. Of course, I like Jonathan Taylor, the running back. We've all bragged about their center and their guard for a lot of years, and maybe it's warranted still. I don't really know. I like some of their parts on defense. Their linebacker core is pretty good.
Starting point is 00:18:08 What do you really need to get over the hump, man? Because it seems like you always – people used to talk about Chris Ballard. They talk about him as he was one of these two or three best GMs in the league. You don't quite hear him saying that. And then the assistant GM was always on everybody. Ed Dodge was always on everybody's list, you know, getting the GM job. Has the luster worn off on those guys? And what does this team actually miss?
Starting point is 00:18:35 Yeah, so with Ballard, this is probably the hottest his seat's ever been. And that's after 2022 when they fired Frank Reich during the season. Right. We did a whole show on Tuesday where we've been looking at kind of the biggest pieces on the franchise and whether they should stay or go. And we really had no good reasons as to why Chris Ballard should stay. Other than financially, his contract is through 2026. And maybe Jim Irsay doesn't want to buy it now or,
Starting point is 00:19:05 you know, be paying someone that is going to be firing. That's really it. But if, you know, just to simplify the answer on their roster, what they need, just,
Starting point is 00:19:15 let's just say right now, everything, everything provided they're really missing a tight end that can make a difference. Their tight end room has been pretty nonexistent all season. And they know that. They tried to get up, and they were interested in Malik Neighbors and Brock Bowers, and Brock Bowers got sniped right in front of them,
Starting point is 00:19:34 which I think was probably a gut punch for them because look what he's done this year. And then on the defensive side of the ball, the middle of the field is more open than 7-11. I mean, you guys – and they have tackling issues tackling issues have plagued them throughout the year they've had some really good performances but in their worst performances it's been tackling issues one of them notably was the tank bigsby game earlier in the season you guys saw firsthand and i see tank bigsby on on the docket for this week, and I'm like, wow, look what you guys did last week.
Starting point is 00:20:05 You couldn't tackle a soul. So they're on the heels of another terrible performance with Tank Bigsby and Travis Etienne coming in again, and I don't feel great about it. So, I mean, are these guys going to play with a little bit of pride, or are they going to have one of these random awesome games where they look like one of the better defenses in the league? You just don't know week to week. Good stuff.
Starting point is 00:20:29 Good stuff. I guess we'll get to it in the third segment and talk about keys to victory if the Jaguars want to win the game. You know what I mean? That's right. I mean, the Giants didn't have any reason to do it last week, but they did. So, yeah, we'll talk about what can each of these teams do to win on Sunday. No doubt. All right, guys, the NFL playoffs are almost here,
Starting point is 00:20:49 but it's not too late to get in on the regular season action with Vandal. Go to prizepix.com slash locked on NFL and use code all over case locked on NFL to
Starting point is 00:21:54 win 50 bucks instantly when you play just five. All right, Tony. So I can think of about 16 reasons the Jaguars could win this one, but why don't you give me a top three that could lead them to victory? Believe it or not, what they've been through this year, they still play with a lot of pride. They still, you know, they lost more close games by one score. I think they have eight games they lost by one score, and they lead the league in that. So they've always been fiercely competitive when they play.
Starting point is 00:22:24 So I do believe the thing that they have going is they had a lot of young guys that are really, really trying to put good stuff on tape, whether they're going to be here or somewhere else. They really have not given up or quit. They ain't sitting there thinking about no draft pick, man. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:22:40 I don't know how you tank anyway in a contact sport. Whether you tank or not, you're going to get punched in the mouth. So you might as well fight back. You know what I mean? And you'll get hurt by trying to actually tank and give the game away. These guys just don't do that, man. They actually go out and give it 100% each and every time.
Starting point is 00:22:57 And they do have a certain amount of football character. And you got to chalk that up to them. And they're just not very good. That's just it. It's not a very good team. And sometimes it comes down to that. Teams have heart. They try hard.
Starting point is 00:23:10 It's just a talent discrepancy. They don't have enough, whether it's depth or injuries. For the Colts, I mean, I got to keep it simple because, again, like I said, you never know what they're going to do. So I think in order to win this game against the Jaguars, they've got to limit the turnovers. Because last week against the Giants, the offense actually did largely show up. It was the defense that couldn't stop a dang thing.
Starting point is 00:23:36 DeForest Buckner said they couldn't stop a nosebleed. But, you know, Flacco throws a pick on the first drive. And then in their final two drives, still within one score, interception and a fumble so they were in it they if the turnovers just kind of really made it worse than it needed to be so limit the turnovers looking at you flacco if it's going to be him out there they've done a great job running the ball jonathan taylor has been on a tear he's got a few hundred yard games in the last month like they're running the ball really well Taylor has been on a tear. He's got a few hundred yard games in the last month. Like they're running the ball really well right now. And then defensively simply wrap
Starting point is 00:24:09 up and tackle. If there's ever been a week where it's probably been stressed and hammered into their head endlessly by the media, by the fans, by the coaches, it's this week. If they can't do it this week, they just can't do it uh so i think if they do those three simple things protect the football keep up the good work in the run game and then just simply wrap up and tackle like there's been a few games where you look at their opponents uh rushing yards after first contact or yards after catch and it's two three 300 yards, like a whole game's worth of yards just based on after first contact. It's insane. Just take care of the simple things and don't beat yourself, I think. And the Colts, it's probably not going to be a comfortable win, but all their wins are pretty
Starting point is 00:24:58 much one score games as well, like you were mentioning. That's all. You just need to win by one point. That's it. You just got to win, man point that's it you just gotta win man you know you know there's no column for uh how good you win it just says win loss and tie uh they haven't done a whole bunch of that last thing is uh shane steichen is that is they on a bit of a hot seat it's looking that way there's some murmurs lately that it might be more so Chris Ballard being on the hot seat, but it depends how you look at it. You could look at Chris Ballard and Shane Steichen as kind of a package
Starting point is 00:25:33 deal. And if you get rid of one, you get rid of both. You know, you know, Shane, he's definitely got his faults. I'm not totally ready to pull the plug on him yet.
Starting point is 00:25:47 But when you look at Ballard, I just – I don't know what the redeeming qualities are or what you have to hang your hat on, you know. And you're looking at Shane Steichen came out of his first year as the Colts head coach, gave them a plus five win from the year before. So they did really well, and that's with Gardner Minshew carrying the five win from the year before. So they did really well. And that's what Gardner Minshew carrying the load pretty much the whole year.
Starting point is 00:26:08 Drop pass, the drop pass could have, you know, gotten them into the playoffs. Yeah. And then Chris Ballard, that off season, the only two outside free agency brought in Joe Flacco,
Starting point is 00:26:19 who you hope to never see. Cause it's your backup quarterback. Right. And Ray Kwan Davis, their third defensive tackle. That's the only free agent moves they made from the outside. Now they re-signed a bunch of their own guys. But like I told you, all those guys were on some of the worst teams they've had.
Starting point is 00:26:34 They sound like the Jaguars a couple of years ago when the Jaguars went 9-8 and then they just kept the whole band together and they went 9-8 again. And then this past season they tried to call themselves a draft and develop team and then they go out and get extra people and they have the worst season that you could have so obviously they're not a draft and develop team man all right i say that that works if there's patience involved but right you're not supposed to regress to that level and you know know, kind of not, not really addressing things. And free agency makes it so your draft picks have to hit. They have to contribute right away and be studs.
Starting point is 00:27:12 And the Colts, they hit more so on like day three players than they do early round guys. And that that's just what their roster is full of. Basically. I'm not going to give a score prediction, but I do. I don't think the Jaguars are going to win this game. I think the Colts are going to figure out a way to beat them. They're going to get swept by Jacksonville.
Starting point is 00:27:29 Jacksonville does win. They'll be four and two in the division. And when you look at that just by itself, you think, wow, four and two in the division. They might be a wild card team. Right now, man, they ain't won before games already this year. So that's just how bad they've been. But I anticipate that the Colts are going to win this game.
Starting point is 00:27:46 I really don't want to pick the Colts, but it's the final game of the season and I look at a couple of these guys who, like you look at a Ryan Kelly, who's like the longest tenured guy. He's been here even before Chris Ballard, and I
Starting point is 00:28:02 think he knows this is probably his final game in Indy. They drafted his replace. Yeah, he's a free agent and they drafted Tanner Bortolini in the offseason who has looked pretty good when he's in for Kelly. And it's just kind of the writings on the wall. Kelly, he's very prepared for this to be his last game. He knows it's possible, but he's been talking all about like what he's going to miss most is, you know, playing next to Quentin Nelson and playing next to Mark Lewinsky and those guys. And Ryan Kelly is a guy that's going to go out there and give every last
Starting point is 00:28:35 drop of sweat he has on Sunday. And I think there's going to be a still good when he's healthy. He's been, you know, he had a stint on IR this year. He's been adequate. He's, you know, he's healthy, he's been, you know, he had a stint on IR this year. He's been adequate. He's, you know, he's doing well, well in the run game. And, you know, that's what their offense needs to be right now anyways. But there, there are some guys out there. Like I, I can't imagine Kenny Moore is going to have two stinger games in a row. That's been one guy you could hang your hat on for like the longest time. So DeForest Buckner, obviously I mentioned Jonathan Taylor's been awesome. I do think the important players are going to have big enough performances to
Starting point is 00:29:12 get them across. It might be a one or two point win, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say at home, because if it was an Everbank, I couldn't do it, but they're at Lucas oil stadium. I say they get it done by a very small margin of victory in this one. Fair enough, man. It's been fun. Thank you for having me, Jake, again.
Starting point is 00:29:31 Of course. I always look forward to Jaguars week. No doubt, man. We always do this. We do it twice a year. And then, of course, we get together in offseason and talk smack with each other, man. But it's always fun.
