Hello, everyone. I'm Zach Hicks of HorseshoeHuddle.com, your resident film nerd over there at the site.
My usual co-host is Jake Arthur. He is our boots on the ground, our daily beat guy over at HorseshoeHuddle.com as well.
And, yeah, he's a little busy right now with the Shaquille Leonard stuff, and, that's the topic of our show. So let's just jump right into it, guys. We're going to talk all about
our instant reaction to former star linebacker Shaquille Leonard, former all pro linebacker
Shaquille Leonard, being waived by the Colts here in in what late November of the season,
he has officially been waived by the Colts. And then we're going to talk about why this move
kind of happened right now. And if it kind of makes sense by the Colts. And then we're going to talk about why this move kind of happened right now
and if it kind of makes sense for the Colts going forward.
And then at the very end of the show, we're going to talk about what's next for Indy,
what kind of money they saved with this move,
and where that money could go maybe in free agency or with some of their in-house guys.
But just kicking this show off, talking about the instant reaction.
I mean, I don't know if you guys are with me,
but when I first saw the news drop where I saw Shaquille Leonard's post on Twitter saying goodbye to Indy, I think it was around like two o'clock today, 2 p.m. Eastern time or 1 p.m. Eastern time, whatever it was, I thought he retired.
Like, I did not think in a million years that the Colts would release him midseason.
I thought for sure after the year a departure was most likely going to happen.
It just made sense. I mean, look, we'll talk about it obviously throughout the show, but
it seemed like that breakup was coming after the season with the amount of money he's owed,
with how much money the Colts could save and where that money needs to go for the Colts going forward
and his lack of playing time on this defense. It made sense that the departure from the team
was going to happen at some point.
But the Colts seemed to get ahead of it before the offseason. They waived Shaquille Leonard today,
the former All-Pro linebacker. Just looking back on his career in Indy, he was a four-time All-Pro, three-time first-team All-Pro, which is just insane. I mean, what, three of those came in his
first three years in the NFL? I think one of those was a second-team All- came in his first three years in the NFL, or I think one of those was a second team All-Pro in his first couple years, but in three of his first four years in the NFL, he was
a first team All-Pro defensive rookie of the year in 2018, a three-time Pro Bowler. He was just off
to probably the greatest career start that we've ever seen from a linebacker, especially statistically.
I mean, statistically, his start to his career is unmatched when it comes to just linebackers in the history of football in terms of tackles, interceptions, forced fumbles, sacks.
He was kind of doing it all for the Indianapolis Colts.
And then it started to derail after he got that big contract.
Now, I'm not saying that it's because he got the big contract that he all of a sudden fell off a cliff.
It's just right when he got his gigantic extension is when the injury
started to pile up for Shaquille Leonard. You know, last year in particular, he had two back
surgeries, one that was to fix an issue that happened in the first surgery. He also suffered
a broken nose in one of the games he played along with a concussion, suffered a concussion this
off season as well. So just multiple injuries, all really piling up a lot of concussions, a lot of
back surgeries, a lot of nerve issues in his back. And, and, you know, you kind of see it on the field this year
that he just was not moving the same way that he used to. And, you know, when we talk about what
Shaquille Leonard is or what Shaquille Leonard was for this Colts team too, it's just, he was just a
playmaker. He was a guy who would use speed, use his athleticism, use his just natural
tenacity and his instincts on the field to make plays. You know, if it came down to the end of a
game and the Colts needed a play to be made, Shaquille Leonard was making that play, whether
he was punching the ball out from a running back, whether he was getting a big sack, whether he was
getting an interception in the clutch, Shaquille Leonard was making those big plays. He was truly
an electric player for the Indianapolis Colts in those first four seasons.
And it's just unfortunate that it's ending the way it is.
You know, I don't think there's any ill feelings on either side here.
I mean, obviously, again, Shaquille Leonard was upset about his playing time.
And there were some issues, obviously, regarding that with the coaching staff and with Leonard.
But I think this is something where both sides, the Colts and Leonard,
both knew after the season that this beautiful marriage that they once had
was coming to an end after the year.
And it mutually benefits both sides to kind of get it done now.
Just rip that Band-Aid off as soon as possible.
Let him get a shot at picking up somewhere else,
which we'll talk about in segment two a little bit more but you know it's just unfortunate the way it all came
down you know we've talked about Shaquille Leonard quite a bit on this show who get a lot of questions
in post-game shows and stuff like that being like why is Leonard not playing more why is he not out
there on on third downs and I tried to be as respectful and thorough in my analysis of Shaquille
Leonard up to this point throughout the season.
And the simple fact of the matter is he's just not what he once was.
And the thing is, with the way that he played in the past, like we have to if we're really looking back at Shaquille Leonard, he was not an assignment sound football player. He was a bit of a freelancer that would just overwhelm teams with that speed,
athleticism, and his beautiful instincts in that spot drop zone in Matt Eberfluss' scheme.
Now you're getting him into a scheme where you need to be assignment sound football. You need
to be in that spot that the defense needs you. You need to be able to match routes that are
coming your way and take those routes away. And that doesn't always lead to a ton of turnovers and a lot of, you know, big things happening
for you.
So you have a very different defense that doesn't really fit what he does.
And you have the nerve damage really taking away some of his athleticism and his fluidity.
I mean, he's a very stiff football player right now.
He's not very explosive and he can't take on blocks and shed blocks either.
I mean, he never really could do that, but he really can't do that now.
So when you take all that and you put him in a scheme
that doesn't really fit what he can do,
you just have a very replaceable player on your defense.
I mean, we had so many questions being like,
you know, why is Shaquille Leonard not playing more?
It's like, because the truth of the matter is,
I mean, he's at best the third best linebacker on this team.
You know, EJ Speed and Zyra Franklin are clearly ahead of him.
And then you can even make the argument, I think, that Saguna Luby was ahead of him when Saguna Luby played that one game.
Like, I saw more from a Luby in that one game, especially in coverage, than what we saw from Shaquille Leonard throughout the season.
And it's just the unfortunate truth of it.
I mean, look, if he played last year under Gus Bradley, he would have been starting where Zyra Franklin
is starting right now, but he missed pretty much all of last year. Zyra Franklin became that guy
and Zyra Franklin's not giving up that role. He's one of the best linebackers in the AFC.
Then you go into this year, EJ Speed is just so much more explosive and fluid, there's no reason to give that job to Shaquille Leonard.
So the hard truth of the matter with what Shaquille Leonard is right now is he's a freelancing,
plotting linebacker that struggles to take on blocks and is not very assignment sound
and pass coverage.
I mean, unless the ball's being thrown right at him, I just don't know what you're really
getting from Shaquille Leonard. So if we're going to be as stone cold to the truth as possible
right now when it comes to Leonard, I think there's a place where he could fit somewhere in
the NFL. And we'll talk about that in segment two. It's just that place is not here in Indy.
And it's really unfortunate. It's really unfortunate because again, early in his career, Shaquille Leonard, such an electric player, such an electric
game-changing player that would take the ball away from offenses in a league that is so built
around offenses being on schedule and being explosive. He was that on defense. He was
someone who could just disrupt all of that. No matter what he's doing out there, he could
disrupt it, but he's not that guy anymore. or at least he wasn't that guy here in India.
I really, really hope he can go somewhere else and get back to being the maniac.
I really hope he can.
But injuries suck, man.
And he's just not that guy here in India.
So it sucks that it happened.
It really sucks.
Again, the fall from grace from what he was to what he is now, at least in my opinion,
is pretty, pretty crazy.
But it happens, man.
It happens with injuries.
It happens in this league.
And I at least applaud the Colts for waiving him now and giving him a chance to pick up somewhere else before the season's over.
So he can get a little bit of an audition and not just sit on the inactive list the rest of the year and go into free agency with a stock super low. Like they're at least giving him a chance to get out there and maybe start for a contender down the stretch and maybe let him put his best foot forward before free agency or before
he gets cut after the season by some other teams. So hopefully it all works out for him. Hopefully
it all works out for the Colts, but that's my instant reaction to this cut. I mean,
the timing of it surprised me. The overall move itself didn't.
It seemed like it was heading this way regardless. But yeah, Shaquille Leonard no longer with the
Indianapolis Colts. I'm as shocked as you guys are that it happened now, but it was bound to
happen at some point going forward. And I respect the Colts for just getting that bandaid ripped
off as soon as possible. But coming up, we're going to talk about, again, why this move happened right now,
what kind of led to this move happening, and again, why it kind of makes sense
just to get it over with at this point in the season.
But first, guys, you shouldn't have to worry when you are buying your tickets to your next big event.
I mean, look, I have gone to so many sites trying to find tickets for my favorite concerts,
for my favorite sporting events.
I mean, besides football,
I love going to my Washington Capitals games.
I just love the Washington Capitals.
And so many of these sites where I'm trying to find tickets
just don't give me that peace of mind
that I'm really looking for.
But Game Time is just perfect for me.
It's the fast and easy way to buy tickets
for all sports, music, comedy, and theater
events near you with killer last minute deals, all in prices, views of your seat, and their
best price guarantee.
GameTime takes the guesswork out of buying tickets.
GameTime is the only ticketing app that gives you the complete peace of mind with your purchase.
Again, I get so anxious when it comes to buying tickets, but one of the best things that GameTime
does is I get to see the view from my seat before I buy. So if you're someone like me who can't afford
the tickets right up next to the field or right up next to the ice rink, again, when I'm going
to my Caps games, you guys got to go on game time because you can see exactly where your view is
going to be. You don't want to be stuck behind some kind of stanchion out there, right up there
in the stadium. So game time does a great job with that. And another great thing with GameTime is you can just buy these tickets
within two taps.
It's so quick.
And they're just obsessed with finding you a way to save money on your tickets.
GameTime guarantee means you can always get the best price.
If you find tickets in the same section or row for less on some other site,
GameTime will credit you 110% of the difference.

Guys, I work in retail.
I've worked in retail for the last six, seven years of my life.
I know how fourth quarter can be for people shopping and for people like me, again, working
in retail.
So it's very natural to feel a lot of sadness or anxiety about this time of year.
I know it's a happy time of year, but again, it's very stressful and it could be a really
tough time for anybody.
But adding something new and positive to your life can counteract some of those feelings.
I've always used therapy as my, you know, my go-to crutch, my go-to like leg to stand

All right, guys, so we're continuing this conversation about Shaquille Leonard.
Shaquille Leonard, again, released by the Indianapolis Colts,
former All-Pro linebacker, is now on waiver,
subject to the whole waiver wire process.
Some team could claim him and grab that $6.19 million cap charge
for the rest of the season.
I don't think it's going to happen.
I think he'll just hit free agency,
and then he'll be able to pick his spot after that.
But we'll see what happens with that movement here in the next couple days.
But let's talk about the whole decision, I guess, that led to,
or I guess all the process that led to this decision
of Shaquille Leonard being waived by the Indianapolis Colts.
Now, from what we've kind of been able to hear from behind the scenes,
you know, Shaquille Leonard did say that defensive coordinator Gus Bradley
informed him that he would be inactive going
forward for the rest of the season. Now this comes after the bye week. So I'm assuming again,
now this part is me assuming this is my speculation here. So I don't want this to be
like a report or anything, but my speculation is that Gus Bradley and defensive staff looked
closely at the film over the bye week, especially at that Patriots game film and at some
of the games before that. And they looked at it and they said, you know what, we need to get our
best players on the football field. And that's not going to be Shaquille Leonard. We just are not,
we're not happy with his progress at this point in the season. So they did inform him on Monday
that he would be inactive going forward for the rest of the season. Now, we already know
that Shaquille Leonard has been pretty vocal the past couple weeks about his lack of playing time.
Now, it hasn't really been super combative. It's been fairly introspective and very,
I'm not really sure the right word for it, but it's been very, you know, Shaquille Leonard saying,
hey, I think I'm back. I think I deserve more playing time. I don't know what more this coaching staff needs me to do to
show that I need to be out there more. It wasn't really, it wasn't like, you know, Oh, this coaching
staff is stupid or all this coaching staff is wrong. It was more so what more can I do to get
on the football field? And just kind of asking the media that question rather than keeping it
behind closed doors. Again, I'm not saying it was a horrible decision by him or anything, or I'm not calling him out for it. I'm just saying that
that's what happened. So you combine those two factors where Gus Bradley did inform Shaquille
Leonard that he would be inactive the rest of the season going forward. Shaquille Leonard's already
had this recent history of wanting to play more and wanting to get on the field. And this comes
to my other speculation here that Chris
Ballard probably looked at the whole situation and probably thought to himself, look, we're going to
move on from Shaq after the season. He's not going to be back because it's not worth that capital.
We have an out in his contract. It's time to take that out. And I think Chris Ballard trying to do
right by a player that's been really good for the Colts for years, just wanted to get ahead of that offseason move
and give Shaquille Leonard a chance to latch on with a different team.
I really think that's what it is.
I think it was instead of just keeping Leonard on the inactive list
the rest of the season and having him, quote-unquote,
I don't want to say quote-unquote, but I just want to say
rotting away on the inactive list.
You don't want him just rotting away there on the inactive list the rest of the season
because then he's not putting his best foot forward
going into free agency.
The last time we would see Shaquille Leonard
going into free agency
would be that terrible Patriots game he just played.
You know, that Patriots game
where he really, really struggled.
I think this is a way for Chris Fowler
to put Shaquille Leonard out there to other teams.
Another team could claim him.
Another team could sign him another team could
sign him after he passes through waivers and just give him a shot to get some more playing time with
maybe a contender maybe with a tanking team like whatever like it doesn't matter who the team is
that way he can put a better foot forward going into free agency I think this is ultimately Chris
Ballard trying to do right by his star player, even though, you know, you get the temporary embarrassment of being released by the team that gave you that gigantic contract.
You know, it's unfortunate.
It looks bad.
It sucks probably for the player to see your name on, you know, being waived and stuff
like that.
But I think Leonard is a smart enough guy to where he can look at this as a business
decision and say, look, the Colts are doing right by me here. They're letting me get out. I mean, not doing
right, I guess, in the grand scheme of things, but doing right by letting me get out there
and get on with another team. So, you know, it sucks. And if the whole situation sucks,
I can't really say much more outside of that. But I do like that they're giving him that chance
to get out there with another team because his future is not in Indianapolis, but he still could have a future with another team.
So if we're looking at this from Shaquille Leonard's perspective, you know, he really needs to go to a team that is still doing a lot of spot drop type stuff, I guess, which isn't a lot of teams.
Like maybe he could pick back up with Matt Eberflus in Chicago. I know they already have a couple linebackers that they have highly paid there right now, but if he could get back with like a Matt Eberflus style of
defense to where he can play more of that creeper type role, more of a, you know, just a flat
defender or short zone defender on third downs and do a lot of blitzing. And then on, on rundowns,
be the guy who's going to be kept clean and not have to take on double teams or take on
blockers in the hole, then I could see a role that works for him for another defense. It's just
he really can't go to another defense that's similar to what the Colts are doing or similar to
what teams like the Niners, the Jets are doing or something where they're just asking so much
out of their linebackers in terms of assignment sound football. That's just not what Shaquille
Leonard can do. He needs to be untethered basically as a linebacker. Now, does he have the athleticism
to still do that? Probably not. But again, I'm not going to rule him out. This is a guy who's
overcome a lot of adversity in his life, who's worked through a lot of things. So I'm not going
to completely rule out Shaquille Leonard.'s just if he's gonna find his way back
to being the maniac that he once was he needs to find the right defense for him hopefully he goes
out there with that in mind if he does hit actual free agency after waivers hopefully he looks for
the right defense that lets him just be that kind of lurker that creeper that freelancer that he
once was with Matt Eberflus and he can maybe find some of that early magic again.
But again, I like that the Colts let him go now
just so he could test the waters
and get a good foot going forward into free agency next year.
But we'll see what happens with Shaquille Leonard.
Hopefully it's a good thing for him.
But, you know, again, it stinks.
This whole situation sucks.
A player that was once beloved and once so great here in
Indy is now a free agent or now on waivers halfway through the season or a little over
halfway through the season. So yeah, that's all I really have to say on that. Coming up, guys,
we're going to talk about what's next for this Indianapolis Colts team, talk more about
this Colts defense without Shaquille Leonard, and talk about which players need to step up
in Shaquille Leonard's absence going forward. But first, guys, score early this NFL season with FanDuel, America's
number one sportsbook. Right now, new customers get $150 back in bonus bets with any winning a
$5 Moneyline bet. That's 150 bucks. If your team wins,
if you've been thinking about joining FanDuel,
there's no better time to get in on the action.
The app is so easy to use.
There's a wide range of betting options,
including spreads,
player props,
over unders and more.
And guys never take my advice on over unders.
I,
I cannot predict these Colts games right now.
You know,
we go into that Cleveland game and I'm saying,
Oh yeah,
bet the under,
it's going to be just a slug fest. It's going to be a low-scoring game. Absolutely not. It was not an under-type
game. It was a super high-scoring game. And then for this Patriots game, I was like, okay, yeah,
maybe bet the over. Both these teams are not very good. They're going to sling the ball around a
little bit, have some goofy fun over there in Germany, and we get a 10-6 game over there in
Germany. So trust yourselves more than me when it comes to the over-unders.

All righty, Locked on Colts every day.
Again, we are continuing our conversation about the big news that Shaquille Leonard was waived by the Indianapolis Colts today.
Again, just a crazy turn of events from where
Shaquille Leonard was a couple of years ago. But to kind of kick off this final segment,
we're going to talk about some of the money that the Colts saved with this deal. Now,
by releasing Shaquille Leonard, the Colts saved $55 million over the next three seasons,
with only $12 million in dead cap hit. I think it's an $8 million dead cap charge for next year and then a $4 million
dead cap charge for 2025. Again, this was a move that was going to happen in the offseason because
that's just so much money to save for a player that's just not a starting player for your team
and not even a productive backup for your team either. So it's a move that was going to be made
in the offseason anyway. They get ahead of the curve and just do it now.
The money saved can go to a bunch of pending free agents
in Grover Stewart, Kenny Moore II, Michael Pittman Jr.,
Gardner Minshew is about to hit free agency as well.
And honestly, I think one move that people aren't talking about enough
is linebacker Zyra Franklin just got his extension two years ago,
but that was with him being a reserve player.
Now he's the face of your defense.
Zyra Franklin is your starting middle linebacker. He's your guy who's going to break
the franchise record and tackles in the season who might be a pro bowler this year.
Zyra Franklin's probably going to need an increase in pay after the season as well. So
this is a lot of money being saved over the next three seasons that can go towards keeping those
players and go towards, you know, extending those players and, and keeping them away from free agency. So again, this move
sucks in, in just the whole, whole engrossing thing that is Indianapolis Colts over the last
couple of seasons. But it's a move that was just going to have to be made anyway, just to keep
these other players that are more more more important towards victories here in
Indianapolis uh keeping Grover Stewart, Kenny Moore II, Michael Pittman Jr. and obviously Zyra
Franklin it's just more important for this Colts team than keeping Shaquille Leonard when he's not
even really playing out there on Sunday so uh yeah I think this move was going to be made after the
season regardless getting ahead of it now just gets that money you know getting ready to get off the books uh going into the offseason now what this
move means for the Colts the rest of this season is EJ Speed pretty much becomes a 100% snap guy
going forward uh EJ Speed snaps have been kind of kind of dropping throughout the season this year
like it started off really high with Shaquille Leonard still working back from the injury
and then slowly the Colts tried to work Shaquille Leonard more
into the fold. And as a result, he was eating into EJ Speed's snaps overall. And when that
started happening, the defense started struggling a little bit more. Again, I'm not saying it's all
Shaquille Leonard's fault, but obviously the better player was coming off the field for
the player they were hoping that Shaquille Leonard could be again. Now with Shaquille Leonard no longer factoring into the equation, EJ Speed becomes
the full-time starting other linebacker alongside Zyre Franklin, the more explosive player,
obviously the better run defender, just a better overall player. I think this is going to really
help the Colts defense down the stretch, just having a better linebacker out there than Shaquille
Leonard. Now another player that's going to get some more playing time is probably Saguna Luby.
You know, Saguna Luby, who started one game this year, came in for Zyra Franklin. Zyra Franklin
was banged up. He started, I think he played every single snap in that game, had an interception,
had a couple tackles, a couple run stops, looked really solid in that game outside of a couple
missed tackles there in space.
So Saguna Luby probably will get more base down looks.
I'm assuming Grant Stewart would also get some more base down looks.
So yeah, I think this opens up more playing time for more explosive players, for more productive players on this defense.
Because again, I think if you're really breaking down the performances of Colts linebackers
this year, I would have speed Zyra Franklin and even a Luby over Shaquille Leonard from what we saw on the
field. So I do think that this is a good move for the Colts defense. I think it's going to be
just a more productive move for everything going forward with this Colts defense. And when you're
talking about the style of coverage that the Colts play, every defender is kind of on a string.
That's really what they call it. It's a string defense. You're keeping every
defender on a string and you just can't have someone freelancing and breaking off that string.
Now, when you have a guy like Speed coming in or even a Luby who just knows their assignment's
going to play some good assignment sound football with more athleticism and more explosiveness,
that's just going to be better overall for your pass coverage and obviously for your run defense as well. So I like this move in terms of just making the Colts defense better.
They need their defense to be playing at a really high level down the stretch because
if you look at these next couple of weeks for the Colts, they play some really solid defenses
where the Colts offense might struggle. They play against the Buccaneers, they play against the
Titans, they play against the Falcons, the Steelers, the Bengals.
Those are some really solid defenses.
And then the Colts defense on the other side,
that was playing against some really poor offenses,
you know, like those teams I just mentioned.
Their Colts defense needs to carry this team
down the stretch if the Colts want to make the playoffs.
So having your better players on the field, like EJ Speed,
like even a Saguna Luby, than a Shaquille Leonard,
just helps everything going forward and helps the Colts' chances of making the playoffs. So
again, it's kind of addition by subtraction, unfortunately, for this Colts' defense, but
it's a move that had to be made. You know, you guys can tell from the overall mood of this
podcast, this episode here, it sucks. It really sucks that it had to come down to this.
I really wish it could have worked out. I really wish Shaquille Leonard could have gotten back to
being Shaquille Leonard. And I still hope he does somewhere else. It's just, it's the nature of the
business, man. It is business. The Colts had to make this move in order to be at their best going
forward and to, you know, to kind of get ahead of the curve, what's going to happen this off season.
So yeah, it sucks to have a whole episode talking the curve, what's going to happen this off season. So yeah,
it sucks to have a whole episode talking about this,
but what are you going to do?
What are you going to do?
So yeah,
if you guys missed it,
if you guys missed what the whole topic of the show was,
the Indianapolis Colts released a linebacker,
Shaquille Leonard,
former all pro linebacker,
Shaquille Leonard.
He is subject to waivers and he passes through waivers and he will become a
free agent eligible to sign with anybody in the next couple of days.
