The Colts' most recent performance has some feeling warm and fuzzy,
and you had questions about the direction things are going.
Let's get to it.

of horseshoehuddle.com. I'm your resident credentialed media member for the site and
Zach is your resident film nerd for the site. And today we thought it was good as we like to do every
couple of weeks and do a Q&A episode,
get the temperature of the room, see what you guys want to hear about.
Went out to our insiders, got their questions.
We got all of theirs in here, YouTube, Twitter.
So kind of put out an all-points bulletin.
You guys responded very well.
So we've got these broken up into kind of like the current situation in season stuff.
We'll also discuss some bigger picture stuff and, you know, future offseason focus. And then you
all guys also send us some non football questions as well that we'll get to there at the end. So
let's start with the here and now. One of our insiders said, I expect the Colts to lose this
week against the Detroit Lions.
You know, I think that's fair.
I don't think that is besmirching them.
But what kinds of numbers, what kind of numbers or looks could Anthony Richardson give the fans to show that last week wasn't a fluke?
Regardless, this is going to be a tough game, they say.
Zach, what do you think?
Yeah, I think, you know, counting numbers are always very big for narratives and for the national media and just for just optically how it looks.
Right. So I know we're all sitting here being like, oh, yeah, counting numbers wise, give us like 200 to 250 yards passing or more.
That'd be awesome if it was more no turnovers, a couple of touchdowns, 60 percent completion percentage.
And then we're good. You know, those are the counting numbers that look good.
But for me, it really just comes down to how he looks out there in terms of the eye test,
in terms of, you know, is he taking care of the ball?
Is he also still pushing the envelope a little bit?
You know, not making reckless decisions down the field
while also being accurate and poised in the pocket.
I think just kind of everything that he showed this past week,
where even if everything wasn't perfect, you could still look at that game and say,
this was the best he's ever looked in the NFL. I just think something similar to that in terms of,
you know, the ball's out on time. The ball is pretty accurate for majority of the day,
and he just doesn't look panicked or out of control at all in this game. I think if we
just see a copy of that
this week, I'm perfectly fine with whatever result comes from his counting numbers or from anything
like that. Like I don't need it to be a 300 yard offense and three touchdowns type of performance
every single week. Like that's kind of crazy to expect of a young quarterback, but I just want to
see building off of that past performance in terms of
just keeping the good things and continuing to work on the, on the things that are issues. And
I think that's a very feasible ask of Anthony Richardson going forward. So yeah, just, just
continue what he showed last week. Again, doesn't need to be as perfect. Doesn't need to be as good,
but let's see that, that continued poise and accuracy that he showed this past week. I think
those were the biggest things,
which led to his career day against New York Jets.
I agree.
Just for it not to look like clear regression, I think last year as a rookie,
I thought you saw him getting better pretty much every week.
This year obviously looked really chaotic.
It just looked like something was wrong.
But against the Jets, he looked very confident,
but under control better than anything.
He didn't look panicked the whole time.
He was freaking out.
We saw a couple of the alien plays.
Again, I've mentioned every time I've talked so far
that the third down completion of Josh Downs,
where he was up in the air and side-armed it to him.
That's the kind of stuff I didn't feel like where he was up in the air and side armed it to him. Like that,
that's the kind of stuff.
And in fact, we were seeing earlier in the year,
but it's what we saw as a rookie when we saw clear progression numbers wise.
I,
I don't want to put much numbers on it just because you don't know what the
game plan is going to be.
Maybe those for 150 yards and the Colts run for 300.
Awesome.
That's fine.
But yeah,
just not clear regression.
Like build off of the confidence builder
that was last week.
This next one,
what is the game plan to defeat the Lions?
I know it's an extreme long shot,
but I got a feeling this could be a trap game for the Lions.
That was another one from our insider program.
I don't think there's a terrific answer to this one
because the Lions are so good in so
many different areas. Luckily, I'm going to be talking to Matt Derry, the host of Locked on
Lions here shortly after this for crossover tomorrow. I find that I learn so much more
than stats really ever tell me when I talk to those guys. But yeah, I think the best scenario for the Colts, if they're
going to win, I think it's going to be a shootout if they're going to win. Is that kind of what
you're thinking? Yeah, I mean, this this Lions offense is a well-oiled machine. It is insanely
difficult to even slow them up. I mean, aside from just copying whatever the heck the Houston
Texans were doing a couple weeks ago, they got five interceptions.
But even then, the Houston Texans lost that game.
So it is a difficult team to beat.
I mean, they're one of the best teams I think we've seen in the regular season in the last 10, 12, 15 years in the NFL.
This is a very, very good Detroit Lions football team that starts with coaching and goes to the players
and goes to just that culture that
they have there in Detroit. And it's kind of the goal that every team wants to be right now.
In terms of how to beat them, I think on offense, it's just kind of continue doing what they did a
little bit this past week, except the first step is actually having a run game. They have to have
something going on the ground in this one. It can't be two yards per carry and run the ball 40 times.
A Lee McNeil and DJ Reader next to each other.
Right, right.
You know, maybe get some outside runs going
and maybe, you know, kind of just get Quentin Nelson
and Braden Smith on the move a little bit
and don't continually run up the middle into that brick wall
that's coming up against the Detroit Lions.
When it comes to the passing game,
I think attack their linebackers as much as possible.
You know, Brian Branch and Kirby Joseph are fantastic safeties back there.
They use quite a bit.
So I think you want to attack the linebackers as much as possible.
And then if you get those safeties cheating inside, then you can take your isolated shots
to an A.D. Mitchell or to an Alec Pierce on the outside.
And then just don't turn the ball over offense too.
If you give the Detroit Lions a short field, you're cooked.
If you give them a long field, you might be cooked,
but if you give them a short field, you might be cooked there for sure.
And then when it comes to defense,
I really think it's just take away the explosive plays,
buckle up against the run and hopefully you can hold them to three,
you know, on drives.
Like if you can hold them to three on a drive,
that that's a big win for your defense. the colts have been pretty good at that until this
past week against new york jets they had some miscommunications in the red zone that prevented
them from holding the jets to three and i think it's a very different game if they could have
because i mean the jets got in down in scoring position like three times this past game
unfortunately they converted all of those for touchdowns but that's kind of where the colts
essentially lost the game or not lost the game, but where the defense had their worst performance in weeks was because of that.
So I really think it just comes down to limiting those explosive plays on defense.
And then at the end of the day, you need the Lions to have a bad day because you could do all those other things and they still might have the talent to beat you.
I think you need them to also have a bad day and a sloppy day.
And you got to pull out all the tricks.
It's a good team, man.
It's a really good football team.
So we'll see what the Colts have in store.
I just want to see them exchange punches with one of the best teams in the
league.
They've done it with the Buffalo bills to a degree.
They've done it with, you know, the Minnesota Vikings to a degree,
but this is kind of next level,
even for those two tests
the Colts already had this year.
Yeah, for my money, the Lions,
I've been thinking they're the best team in the league the entire season,
so we'll see how it goes.
Just one real quick one, and then I'll open the floor to you on the next one.
This person asked, will any of the injured veteran offensive linemen,
I think this was from YouTube,
will any of the injured veteran offensive linemen be ready for Sunday's game? So the Colts are going to walk through today
rather than a practice. Bernard Ryman is going to be listed as a DNP today. That's according
to Shane Steichen. He said basically we'll just see how the week goes. Ryan Kelly obviously on IR
cannot come back yet. So Ryman, we'll see. Not a great start to the week. Kelly, obviously still out.
Zach, let's go back to you.
This next one from the insiders.
There seems to be some significant modifications of the defense
and Gus Bradley's system.
Everyone was calling for his head the first eight weeks,
and now those mouths seem to be silenced.
Now, what's he changed?
Yeah, I'll be quick at this because we're running out of time in the first segment, but he's been a lot more aggressive. The blitz rate has jumped up. I
mean, he's been in the 30-ish percentile since the Jacksonville disaster, so he's been blitzing
quite a bit. They've shifted to more cover two, so they're getting out of, you know, they still
run a lot of cover three on early downs to bring Nick Cross into the box for run support help,
but when they get to passing downs, they're doing a lot of, you know, cover two and cover two like fire zone blitzes and stuff and and mixing in a little bit of man for their corners out there.
They're being really creative on defense.
If you look at what Gus Bradley has done in the past, especially with this Indianapolis Colts team, I think this Colts defense is also deserving of a lot of credit, especially the players on there, where, again,
we can talk about Gus being creative and Gus switching to more cover too,
but for those things to work, you need to stand tall in the red zone,
be good in your communication, and you need to force turnovers.
And aside from this past game against New York Jets,
they've been really good at those three areas since the Jacksonville disaster.
So hopefully they can get back to that this week or the week after and get back to forcing turnovers and standing tall
in the red zone. But I think it kind of just goes for coaching and then players getting adjusted to
this kind of new system that Gus Bradley's done where, again, the cover three stuff and like the
kind of generic-ish cover three from the Jacksonville disaster just wasn't working.
So Gus really has changed it up and credit to him for making that change.
Again,
everyone always says he runs a stale defense that doesn't change anything up.
He never brings pressure.
He's been bringing pressure.
Like if anything,
a big reason why the jets were able to move the ball is because he was
bringing a little bit too much pressure at times this past week,
because that was really where Aaron Rogers was able to get the ball out of his hands
quick and get it to his hot reads. So you kind of live and die with the goods and the bads when it
comes to things like that, like bringing pressure, being creative. But overall, I do like what Gus
Bradley has done, changed a lot of things up, and he's trying to find solutions for this defense.
And while it's not perfect because they're not getting, you know,
pristine play at linebacker, they have young guys at corner,
and the safety play is not perfect or anything like that,
I think he's doing enough to put this team in position to win
with the guys he has available on defense.
So Gus Bradley, I think he's coaching himself back into the job again
for next season, which I know some people might hate,
but I think he's done a pretty good job as of late.
Like the last like five,
six weeks,
he's been a pretty good defensive court defensive coach for this Colts
team.
Yeah,
no,
the,
the things that people were kind of crucifying him for,
he has,
I feel like he's growing into that.
Like you mentioned more pressure and changing up his,
his coverages a little bit.
That's what people always complain about the most.
He's been making those changes, so so far so good.
Coming up, we're going to look at the offseason.
You guys had some questions about that and kind of some bigger picture things.

All right, guys, pre-alcohol probiotic drink by Zbiotics is the world's first genetically
engineered probiotic. It was invented by PhD scientists to tackle rough mornings after
drinking. And here's how it works. When you drink, alcohol gets converted into a toxic byproduct in the gut.
It's this byproduct, not dehydration, that's actually to blame for your rough next day.
Pre-alcohol produces an enzyme to break this byproduct down. Just remember to make Z-Biotics
your first drink of the night. Drink responsibly and you'll feel your best tomorrow. We've all
been there. Hungover, you have your old wives' tale remedies. You know, you got this tonic, this elixir, you know, whatever your trick is.
Sometimes it's a placebo effect or they just flat out don't work.
But that is not what Z-Biotics does.
Again, step one, drink your pre-alcohol.
For the best results, make pre-alcohol your first drink of the night.
Step two, drink responsibly.
All right.

All right, Zach, a lot of talking. So I'm going to turn this over to you in a minute.
This was another insider question said, did Anthony Richardson show enough potential in that
last start against the Jets for the team to still be all in on him regardless of the outcome of the
rest of the season? Basically, was that one game enough for them to really hang their hat on the
whole offseason?
Also, if Richardson plays very well the rest of the season, do you foresee them going all in the next offseason like Houston did last year as a result of C.J. Stroud's success?
So attacking the first part of the question.
Yeah, I did a Jake there.
Attacking the first part of that, though, I think there's degrees to this. Like, obviously, if he looks like he did early in the season in every game post this New York Jets game,
then I don't think that you are completely sold on him as the guy for the future still.
Like, that one game is awesome to have, but you can't be completely sold on the guy where his whole second year,
if he had, you know, a dozen starts or a little over a dozen starts, he had one strong game. And then maybe the Houston game to start
the year was, was solid. But besides that, you're like, you need more positive than that.
But I do think if to a degree, this becomes, I don't want to say the floor, the new regular,
but if this becomes like, this could be the high level game. And if the rest of the games are more
mid-level compared to like early in the season, which
was more low level games.
Then I think you can certainly be all in on him and use that New York Jets game as like
the high point that you were selling yourself on, if that makes sense.
He doesn't need to have another game as strong as this Jets game for the Colts to be sold
on him.
It just can't be six straight duds now after that Jets game. Because then we come into some issues where you're really only relying on one game that
he had against the Jets.
And that's problematic, obviously.
You can't just rely on one game out of 17 to base your positive outlook on your quarterback.
But I think it will be a little bit better, obviously, than what it looked like early
in the season.
If he can just bring up, you know, if he can just do a little bit of what he did this
past week, we're pretty good going into next season with him as a starting quarterback.
As for the all-in thing, you know, again, all chips in, like we always say with this
Colts team, jokingly, I don't think Chris Bowd will ever be someone who makes those
type of moves in free agency.
Certainly there could be a trade that he could work out in the future. Like he's
never been completely opposed to trades. He's made several trades for veteran players in his time as
the Colts GM, but he will never be someone who goes out there and signs 20 free agents at, you
know, high level or mid-level deals. That's just not who he is. He is build up the team through
the draft, extend your drafted players. And if you
have to supplement this team with, with other players, you will do that. And regardless of
what the Colts say, like they did try to make some moves this past off season, Xavier McKinney,
they were talking with him late in his process before the Packers offered a big deal.
Legereus need, they were involved in Legereus need conversations for however many times they
want to deny that they were involved in Legereed conversations and then Daniil Hunter they were talking with him at some point in the
offseason too I'm not saying just because they tried that shows that they're gonna be aggressive
in the future but I do think there is a willingness to go for these type of deals and maybe that
willingness pushes up a little bit if you know what you have in your young quarterback and Anthony
Richardson so we'll see again I don't think it would ever be anything like even like the Houston Texans did
this past season this past offseason where it was multiple big trades multiple big signings I don't
think it would be something like that but I could foresee say Richardson finishes for strong and
there's a big free agent out there at linebacker or corner or something.
I could see them making like one big splash move in free agency to supplement the roster a little bit.
So I can't say the all chips in thing like Houston is what Indy would do, but I could totally see them grabbing a bigger piece to help fill out the roster a little bit, if that makes sense.
Yeah, I don't think it would ever be it would have to be someone where
they feel like this is the missing piece kind of like they did with deforest buckner uh they don't
get lavish like that just with a baron covered they have to feel like this is the missing piece
to do it so if they like their offense enough and they think we need the marquee tight end to do it
like then i would think chris ballard
would try and inquire that some way whether it's through the draft or agency whatever but yeah
i don't think he's just going to start blowing a bunch of money even if anthony looks like the guy
yeah next since the playoffs are just a hope at this point what can the colts do for the rest of
the season to solidify the team uh and then building off of that, how do we make this place one where players want to come?
So I think, I don't know, it's tough to say because you're not out of it in the playoffs.
Like there are obviously some like young guys you might want to see get more playing time,
like an A.D. Mitchell, for example, someone who is like clearly part of your future.
You want to see him get some more playing time it's tough because it's like who's playing time do you eat
into at that point they're they're kind of already playing a lot of their young guys a lot of their
young building blocks other than Mitchell for the most part like Mitchell's playing but he's just in
a loaded group and then what it takes to get players to come there
a lot of times it's the quarterback Anthony has to prove to there he has to look the rest of the
season like he is a guy to to build around like he has to look like the guy but the passing also
has to be there because like pass catchers won't want to come and play with a guy
who maybe he's really talented but is so scattershot as a passer um yeah culture like what are their
buddies on the team say like is it a toxic environment is it a place you want to come and be
money is another thing like upfront money is probably guaranteed money i don't know if the
colts will you know that that's never been their biggest advantage when it comes to free agency stuff.
But there's a lot that goes into it, basically.
Yeah, I mean, I'll be, again, pretty quick at this
so we get to our final segment.
But, yeah, playoffs are not really just a hope for the Colts right now.
Like, obviously, this Detroit game is more than likely going to be a loss
because Detroit's that good of a team.
But outside
of that, I mean, they have five winnable games that they have to win to make the playoffs. I
think it's very possible. I'm not saying it's likely, but I think they're one of two teams
for that final spot in this playoff race. And they get to play one of the other team that they're
competing with for that final spot here coming up in a couple of weeks with the Denver Broncos. So
that'll essentially be a playoff game for the Colts.
When it comes to what they can do the rest of the season to solidify the team,
look, at this point, the team is what it is.
When you're this late in the season, the team is what it is.
You're not going to change too much.
It's just about the guys going out there and producing.
And then for how do you make this a place where players want to come to?
Money.
Money.
That's it.
It really is it. It comes down to money. Like
sure. You know, when, when players sign somewhere, they say like, Oh, I was sold on the environment,
the culture, the coaching, the quarterback, Anthony Richardson made me excited. Look at the
end of the day, it's the money. It's the money. It depends on where they are at that stage in
their career though, too. Right. But again again if the money is is is there that's where
they're gonna go you know like you could be a 40 year old player if someone offers you four million
and someone else offers you three million you're probably gonna take the four million it's it's
nicer money you know like that's that's usually how it goes so um yeah it's about the money so
if you want players to come to you in free agency you gotta you gotta pay up and we'll see see if Chris Ballard is ever willing to do that for an outside free agent. I mean, again,
he lost out to Xavier McKinney because he wasn't willing to go up to that near $20 million per year
price tag that he got. That's, it's all about money. It really is. But I do think that's the
biggest aspect there, but yeah, I mean, playoffs are not out of the question for this Colts team.
They just, I mean,
regardless of what happens this weekend, they have to beat the Denver
Broncos in a couple weeks after the
bye. That's the most important game. And then take care
of business in the other four.
Yeah, at least with the Lions game, it's an NFC game.
It's not a team they're going to be losing
playoff position to, but that
Broncos game is hugely
important at this point.
Alright guys, coming up next,
we're going to take some non-football questions that you had for us.
All right, so this one was from Twitter.
Going to my first Colts game this weekend,
any suggestions of what to do in the city before or after the game?
Anything special to look for in the stadium?
So I don't really get, like, the in-stadium experience much.
Like, I just,
I just go right in up to the world's longest elevators and up to the press
box.
So I don't get to,
I don't get to meander around much.
I know it is an incredibly nice stadium though.
I think they have some sports book stuff in there now,
if you're into,
if you're into betting,
don't hold me to that.
Cause again,
I haven't been right there,
but I know the Colts in the last couple years have done a lot to, like,
improve the fan experience at the stadium.
Before, there are some decent bars, like, right there.
Slippery Noodle is, like, arguably the most, like, legendary bar in the city,
and it's like a two-, three-minute walk from the stadium.
Afterwards, obviously everyone's interests are different, bar in the city and it's it's like a two three minute walk from the stadium afterwards um
obviously everyone's interests are different but like my wife and i love to go to the garage food
hall downtown uh on mass ave it's it's these are kind of popping up in cities all over the country
um but they're you know they're just almost like big they look like warehouses almost with just a bunch of different,
like a food court in a mall almost, but it's all really cool, modern. They've got a lot of
good food options there. Mass Ave in general has a good nightlife and shopping and all that stuff.
So I would definitely suggest Mass Ave and my go-to would be the garage food hall.
Zach, I know that's not quite a question.
That's not quite a question for you, but you know,
I've been to a couple of the places around the stadium.
It's just, I didn't take my pre-alcohol beforehand.
So I don't remember many of the places around the stadium, but no,
Indianapolis is such a fun place. Anytime I'm able to go out there,
I haven't been able to get out to a game yet. I've been out there for training camp and for the combine, but
very, very fun environment in general, even if you're not going to a game. So there's plenty
of places around the stadium though that are really fun to go to. Yeah, yeah, for sure. I
would also trust if you just Google like best bars, best restaurants in Indy. I've done that
before when I feel like going somewhere I haven't gone yet.
And those are usually pretty on point.
Like I haven't seen any of those lists and be like, I don't know about that.
So trust Google when it comes to that as well.
This next one is from our boy Felipe.
And Zach, I'll have you answer this one as well after me.
Because you've kind of got a different perspective as well.
So we said, Jake, I'm assuming what led to pursue uh the beat was the love for the game so is it ever a struggle
to keep that love when it's also a job uh it's demanding and surely it has a tough time it's like
any job um does it just become a job or is it always more than just that? So this is unique. I think like the fandom part of it wears off when it's not a novelty anymore.
Like in 2010 or something, if you would have told me, I would like be right around the Peyton Manning's, Andrew Locke's, like major football players who I grew up like idolizing.
I've been like, that's crazy.
Like at this point,
that kind of stuff,
they,
they it's normalized to you.
And they just are people at that point.
Cause at the end of the day,
most of these guys do just act like normal people.
But as far as like the job of it goes,
like sometimes there are inconveniences that come up.
If you have deadlines or like stuff that has to get done at a certain point and you're trying to do this or that at home like that part of it's annoying.
But there is definite love for the job.
Like I would not be doing it if I wasn't absolutely in love with this job.
It's what I've always wanted to do.
And in this last year, I've finally gotten to the point where this is the main thing I do. I've been
covering the team since like 2013. But I've always had to have a day job up to that. And I still do.
It's more supplemental income at this point. But now like full time cold stuff is really what I do.
And I've worked a long time to get to that point. And it's, it's definitely nothing I would take
for granted. Yeah. And look, it's definitely nothing i would take for granted yeah and and
look it's a crazy thing trying to balance the fandom and non-fandom of even me you guys see
my twitter on sundays how i get very emotional and fan tweety and because like even if you're
not like this diehard fan of it if you're around something like this around a sport and around
players that you support on the team you can't help but be emotionally excited and and have fun with it and stuff i mean i'm not i jumped up and was screaming
at my tv words that i can't repeat on this family-friendly show like happy words though
about anthony richardson's comeback win uh this past sunday i mean my wife walked in as i was
jumping up around and i don't get that way about pretty much any sport anymore, except for hockey is my,
my one go-to sport,
but I get that way about the Colts sometimes.
So yeah,
I didn't grow up a Colts fan and this very much is kind of like work for
me,
but it's like fun work for me.
Like I enjoy talking with you guys.
I enjoy watching the games as long as they're competitive in those games,
even going through the film stuff afterwards.
I mean, unless I'm watching Nick Foles is corpse trying to throw a football.
I'm usually I'm usually having fun.
So, yeah, it's a job, but it's also like a very fun job.
And you can have fandom and have fun with it, too.
Like, it's a cool balance to have.
It's a really fun job to have for sure.
And we love doing this show for you guys, too.
Like, it's it's a blast seeing the comments, even, even when our boy Sean here in the comment
section is laughing at people like it's a fun time. It's a fun time for everyone.
Yeah. I'll be honest. Like just, just to be brutally honest, like this is not the first
podcast Zach and I have done together. And when we were approached to do this show i wasn't sure yet um you know our
our first time you know we didn't necessarily it didn't go the way we thought and i wasn't
a million percent sold but like now i i love this like i absolutely we love doing this show
we've this is what our third year or something doing it so we have a
blast doing this show like the interaction with you guys is awesome uh it's it's definitely the
thing that keeps us coming back like it's something we can see growth with the show all the time
uh people are into it so you guys definitely make it worth it like this has gone so much better than
some of the previous things we've done um And yeah, I wouldn't trade this.
Yeah, for sure. We do appreciate you guys.
And we wanted to have a little bit of fun with this final segment and talk
about kind of take that step back. We did an extra show this week.
So kind of just some fun stuff to have conversations with you guys,
but the big picture stuff that we're really talking about Colts lions,
Colts are playing upset bid this weekend.
Will they get it done?
Hopefully we don't.
Hopefully it doesn't.
Luckily it doesn't matter for their playoff hopes.
They know what they need to do with the play to get to the playoffs after
this game.
So let's go out there and let's just throw a bunch of trick plays at these
lions and see what we can do out there.
