Starting point is 00:00:00 At this point of the offseason, fans like to wonder and talk about who their teams need to add throughout the offseason, but which players on the Colts are already actually building blocks and should stay put. Let's get to it. You are locked on Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. All right. Thanks for tuning in and making us your first listen of the day.
Starting point is 00:00:45 This is your daily podcast covering your Indianapolis Colts. Part of the Locked On Podcast Network. Your team every day. And today's show is brought to you by PrizePix. What is up party people? I am Jake Arthur from horseshoehuddle.com. And today, a little lighter episode. This is actually one I
Starting point is 00:01:13 want a lot of interaction between you guys in the comments with each other, with us. Let's get chatting on this one because I think this will be a nice little fun debate, especially when you have to consider ranking people. But today we're talking about which players on offense and defense are building blocks. Essentially what I mean by that, like, of course, you throw guys in there you don't ever want to replace. But each team, especially the Colts even still, they've got some guys who, when you're going through roster construction throughout the off season, you think about the other players you want to bring in. You're like, oh, they, they would be really good next to X. Like I kind of think of, you know,
Starting point is 00:01:57 someone I'll use in the defensive part, you know, DeForest Buckner, you say a Samson, a Bookham or a Vucama play really nice next to him, for example. So these guys are, A, not players you're looking to upgrade over throughout an offseason. You know, every spot on the depth chart is typically open for interpretation, whether or not you can upgrade it throughout an offseason. But these ones, you're good. You're not really looking to upgrade them. And it may also help the front office and coaching staff be able to pull in these guys, these free agents,
Starting point is 00:02:35 and say, hey, you have an opportunity to play next to player X here. How would you like to do that? Or like I mentioned earlier, bringing in this outside player to play next to the person you already have can just really open up possibilities. So today we're looking at the offensive side, the defensive side, and then in segment three, we'll close it out. There's been a little bit of Colts news this week, nothing earth shattering or anything like that, but some positive things nonetheless in the coaching staff department and a little health update on the owner.
Starting point is 00:03:06 Let's go ahead and start out with the offense. No big surprise here. Let's go ahead and say quarterback Anthony Richardson is one of the Colts three offensive building blocks. Now, obviously, a four game sample size is not enough to say this is the franchise guy. But I think when you – there's a big part of the fan base who I think, oddly enough, is looking for any reason for this rookie quarterback who runs a lot and has had a few injuries to not be the guy. It's weirdo behavior.
Starting point is 00:03:40 I don't really understand it. But we've seen enough positive from Richardson where there is, he is no doubt going to be the starter moving forward until something happens. Otherwise, essentially, uh, this guy, the athleticism was as good as advertised, uh, in the arm strength and arm talent was as good as advertised. We've seen him be very successful as a runner. Uh, he is the most successful rookie running quarterback for the Colts up until the point that he got hurt. So that was going to be no mystery there. His arm talent, all you got to do is look at one of those four games, go look at the Rams game, and you can see him doing things
Starting point is 00:04:18 that not every other quarterback in the NFL can do. But then just his abilities as a passer, he was a lot further along than a lot of us expected us to. I mean, Zach and I were very big proponents of bringing in Richardson this time last year, you know, as the quarterback of the future. But even if he was going to win the starting job outright, it was probably going to take some time for him to develop as a capable passer. He looked capable of carrying a full workload and working throughout the game and doing what he needed to right away. Now he is very, he's got a lot to work on. Yes, but I'm just saying we've seen enough positive to be confident that he is the franchise quarterback or at least gets the chance to prove that he is. And he's not, his presence on the field is not a detriment. They don't have to work around his development, essentially. I think the playbook is pretty open with Richardson
Starting point is 00:05:17 out there. And again, there's just things that he can do that not everybody else can. And then quarterback is obviously the biggest draw when you're going and looking for free agents, whether they're an offensive player or defensive, you know, obviously a receiver or tight end be like, Hey, look at the draw playing next to getting passes from a guy like Anthony Richardson, even on the defensive side of the ball, you think the chiefs don't get quality defensive free agents because they want to play with Patrick Mahomes. And I mean, Mahomes isn't the only other quarterback that's a big draw like that. So certainly having an exciting player like Anthony Richardson with that much potential helps you immensely.
Starting point is 00:05:55 Obviously a building block. Next guy we'll get to the Colts pretty much cemented their stance on that with Jonathan Taylor last year when they gave him that three-year $42 million deal. Obviously, it was a rocky road to get there. A lot being said in the media, and then there was the injury thing. It's all kind of been thrown in the rearview mirror and swept under the rug by all parties at this point. But the Colts obviously feel like Jonathan Taylor is a big building block
Starting point is 00:06:23 for them on offense. And from the end of the season to now, any conversation I've had with anyone associated with the Colts or like seeing them speak in the topic of the Anthony Richardson, Jonathan Taylor combo comes up, a smile comes on their face. Because the potential of that duo is just insane. What it could do to defenses. We, we all got robbed of seeing this go beyond the one snap or like two snaps with one, uh, one carry that we got to see in that Titans game. So fingers crossed that this duo could stay healthy next year because they obviously both struggled with, with injuries. Uh, but but yeah we obviously know with Jonathan Taylor had arguably the best season of Colts running back has ever had back in 2021 and the last time we saw him he
Starting point is 00:07:16 was out there running for what like 170 180 yards against the Texans he looked like the old Jonathan Taylor the last time we saw him. So the good news is Anthony Richardson had dang near the whole season and this coming off season to recuperate and get back to himself, get healthy again. It wasn't an injury that happened late in the year. And again, last time we saw Jonathan Taylor, he looked awesome. So there should be plenty of optimism moving forward. You're all set at quarterback and running back. No worries there. The sky is the limit as long as everyone stays healthy.
Starting point is 00:07:49 Next up, because I'm only going to, I'm going to try and focus in on three of these. As you guys know with me, there's always a lot of gray area and I want to throw a little footnotes in there. But Michael Pittman Jr., obviously the biggest free agent for the Colts this offseason. I just can't see a scenario where Pittman isn't with the Colts for at least this year. I think they're going to look to get something multi-year done, you know, long term. But I think the franchise tag is certainly an option for them if they want to extend those talks. So to the Colts benefit, they're not one of those teams that I think uses the franchise tag
Starting point is 00:08:31 to basically kidnap a player for a year. They use it how it's meant to be. And that's to extend the period of time you have to talk to a player to find a multi-year deal. And just the fact that the Colts don't really ever use it is kind of proof. Chris Ballard is not that type of GM either. Pat McAfee was the last one. I think, what was that, like 2011 or something? They used that on McAfee way back in the day, 2013, 2011, around there. So they'll use it, and then they long a long-term deal like shortly after that so if they use that for pitman i expect it to be used how it's supposed to i don't just think
Starting point is 00:09:14 they're kicking the can down the road for you i think they're legitimately going to try and lock him up long term it could be a three four year deal it's probably not going to be like a five year deal i don't really think i don't think a five year deal. I don't really think, I don't think a lot of players like to do that, that aren't quarterbacks. And I don't think a lot of teams are like to that. Chris Ballard doesn't often sign guys beyond three or four years, those long-term deals. But with Pittman, I think like as long as they are not astronomically apart in Pittman's asking price and what the Colts would like to spend, I expect them to find some common ground and get something done. Pittman could hit the open market because when we talked to him when the season ended,
Starting point is 00:09:55 he discussed he wouldn't really be doing his due diligence not to see what was out there. But at the same time, I think he would love to come back to me and grow with Anthony Richardson, you know, grow in his career and be the leader of, you know, not only the Colts receiver room, but, you know, one of the leaders of the offense, you know, become a captain, things like that. So he's a free agent, but I just cannot, he's so important to the team. I mean, I think I, last time I wrote about it, he was like 27% of their past targets last year for one guy. He's an enormous part of the offense, and I just cannot imagine them letting him go because then if that happens, you have to find
Starting point is 00:10:39 a replacement for that, and you don't have one already. Alec Pierce is not ready to be that. Josh Downs, I mean, he had a great rookie season, but we don't know that he's ready to do that yet. You have to bring Pittman back at the bare minimum for this one year on the franchise tag and work on bringing him back on a multi-year deal. And then I don't want to leave out the offensive line either. You could talk about any of these guys.
Starting point is 00:11:01 You know, Bernard Ryman as the left tackle of the future future obviously quentin nelson um he returned to looking like himself ryan kelly probably closer to the back half of his career um braden smith as well but you know these guys just absolute standouts on the offensive line ryman being kind of the younger star of the group up and comer of the group so you have to mention them as well. It's very fortunate for the Colts that the offensive line now for a year and a half has gotten back to being a big strength of the team. And the only free agents they have of the entire offensive line group, starters in depth, are Danny Pinter and Jack Anderson, who didn't play this year.
Starting point is 00:11:42 So everyone is intact, and they can focus on bringing in maybe one or two more young pieces through the draft or free agency to really bolster the depth and make sure that they don't fall into any ruts. So coming up here in a second, we'll go ahead and talk about the defensive side of the ball. But first, it's time to pull out your lucky charm jersey and order your favorite apps and snacks on DoorDash because it's Super Bowl time again. That's right, guys. At the end of this week, it is the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:12:10 The Colts aren't in it, but that means you get to watch it without absolutely running through your fingernails and chewing them down to the bone. You don't have to watch nervously or anxiously because your team's not in it. We're used to that. It's fine. We're not talking about that. But why root for your team on an empty stomach? Order on DoorDash and save on football watch party favorites. Order pizza, wings, soda, burgers, or even just the buns on DoorDash
Starting point is 00:12:35 and get it all delivered without missing the game. Or you can order chips, dips, nachos, everything you need to make your own nachos on DoorDash and get it all delivered without missing the game. Because we all have that one friend who is supposed to bring something to the pitch in, or he was, we mentioned the buns, he was supposed to bring ice, buns, whatever. Let's call him Dan. Dan is always forgetting everything.
Starting point is 00:12:58 Sorry to all the Dans out there. Be Dan-proof. I mean, go ahead, order through DoorDash. You can get whatever you need off of there. No matter if you're in the boondocks, they've probably still got ample options for you. So be sure to not miss out on anything for the Super Bowl by getting DoorDash. And you can get 50% off up to a $10 value when you spend $15 or more on your first order when you download the DoorDash app and enter code LOCKED23. Subject to change, terms apply.
Starting point is 00:13:27 Don't forget to use code LOCKED23 for 50% off up to a $10 value on your first order when you download the DoorDash app and spend $15 or more. Subject to change, terms apply. Also, we're talking about the Super Bowl. The big game is right around the corner. Prize picks is the easiest and most exciting way to turn every game-changing moment into 100 times your money with as little as four correct picks. You can turn $10 into $1,000.
Starting point is 00:13:57 And this offer expires after the big game, so make sure you latch onto that now. If Patrick Mahomes throws for more than one yard in the big game, you win on price picks. That seems pretty likely, unless Bane, of course, shows up as the pregame show or to sing the national anthem, and then the Dark Knight Rises happens. Other than that, I really like your chances for Patrick Mahomes to get a yard. It's also demon time on prize picks, guys. You can now win up to 100 times your money with as little as four correct picks.
Starting point is 00:14:29 Again, you can turn $10 into 1,000. Demons and goblins are the newest and most exciting way to play at prize picks. Squares marked with red demons or green goblins get you different payouts. You can now win up to 100 times your money with as little as four correct picks, and there's really no better time to bet on all that stuff in the Superbowl. Does all that seem like a lot? Yes, but I mean, exercise those demons and we'll find out how it goes. Price picks
Starting point is 00:14:56 is really simple to play. I can make my picks and submit my entry in less than 60 seconds and quick withdrawals and easy gameplay and an enormous selection of players and stat types are what makes PrizePix the number one daily fantasy sports app. And don't forget, if Patrick Mahomes throws for more than one yard in the big game, you went on PrizePix. Again, that is unless Bane shows up and problems ensue. Go to prizepix.com slash locked on NFL and use code locked on NFL for a first deposit match up to $100. Again, that's prizepix.com slash locked on NFL and use code locked on NFL for a first deposit match up to $100.
Starting point is 00:15:26 Again, that's prizepix.com slash locked on NFL and use code locked on NFL for a first deposit match up to $100. Prize picks. Pick more, pick less. It's just that easy. All right, so when we're talking defense this side, it's not as nice and clean as I would say with the offense. On the offense, you know you have a three-headed monster. You know you have a really good offensive line, and you've got some up-and-coming young weapons. But on the defense, there are some really good players there, obviously, but I think it's more about the roles you have to fill on defense,
Starting point is 00:16:04 and it's not the players themselves. I'll show you what I mean. So right now you have DeForest Buckner as your best, most consistent pass rusher, and he's coming from the interior. The guy's going to get you seven, eight, nine sacks, whatever, every year basically. Very dependable no matter what's going on around him. If he's got absolutely no
Starting point is 00:16:26 edge rushers around him, if Grover Stewart is suspended for six games, the guy's consistent, you can rely on him. And even though the Colts broke the Indianapolis-era franchise sack record this season, I still think you're looking for that dominant single edge rusher, like the guy who you hang your hat on to win in these matchups. The Colts luckily had two of them at one point in Dwight Franey and Robert Mathis. I'm not saying they have to be like a Hall of Famer. They don't have to be Nick Bosa, but I feel like you need that one reliable winner off of the edge to get you that. And unfortunately for the Colts, I mean, they're picking at 15 right now, which usually isn't a great spot if you're trying to look for a top edge rusher.
Starting point is 00:17:13 Like those guys, you want to get them in the top five, top ten, whatever. But they're in kind of a unique spot in this draft. I think there's going to be a lot of offensive players pushed up the board. You're looking at, you know, the quarterbacks there, Caleb Williams, May, Jaden Daniels. There's going to be two or three offensive tackles, maybe three wide receivers. There's a lot of offensive talent being shoved up the early part of the board, which leaves the Colts at 15 in a pretty good spot for what could come down the pike. You know, there's a couple guys from Alabama they could look at.
Starting point is 00:17:52 Liatu Latu from UCLA. They're, you know, the kid from Florida State, Jared Verse. There's several options they're going to have if they want to get that one-on-one winning edge rusher. That's a possibility for them. So Quidipe, I mean, could still develop into the type of guy like that. He's only going into year number four, same with Dayo Adango. We've seen solid progression from each of those guys throughout their young career.
Starting point is 00:18:21 Samson Ebicom had the best season of his career. But I don't think any of those guys yet are at the status where they cannot be upgraded over. So I think, again, even though the Colts broke their Indy era franchise sack record, there's just something missing from the pass rush. And I think it's consistency really more than anything, because what I said two weeks ago to you guys, Nick, it was,
Starting point is 00:18:50 there was four games this year where they had one or fewer sacks. So one or zero and the Colts lost three of those four. The one they won was against the Titans team. That was just not great. And then in those three losses, the opposing quarterback had a passer rating of like 111 on average. So there's a direct correlation between the Colts not getting to the quarterback and losing and the opposing quarterback kind of going off. So there's just, they're missing a little something from that
Starting point is 00:19:20 pass rush and they could find it this off season. We'll see the linebacker core. This is, this is a really interesting area. I think Zaire Franklin obviously is a guy who I think he's pretty much knocking on that door. Like DeForest Buckner of you're not going to replace him. Like you, you've got a guy who is so,
Starting point is 00:19:43 so productive and so, so smart and has a high football cue great instincts that you're not going to replace him so i think what you're looking at around him is you i think he's going to keep getting better let me say that first he's going to go into his third full season of being a starting linebacker so just because he's a little older and the starting portion of his career got started later than a lot of guys, he is still developing as a starting linebacker. So I think he's going to get better, but I still think you need to give him help in coverage at linebacker. Now there are some pretty solid guys in the draft coming up. There might be some in free agency as
Starting point is 00:20:19 well. I think EJ speed speed is not at Zyre's level yet, but he'll get there. I think he is a young, up-and-coming, explosive player. He just needs consistency as well, and he's obviously a much better run defender than he is pass defender. So, so far, you've got DeForest Buckner and Zyre Franklin as a couple solid building blocks who you know factor into your future, at least for the next couple years. But I do think you need to add some things around them that will honestly help them get even better or be more productive. And then you're looking in the back end. I don't have anyone in the back end yet that is a building block. Juju Brents looks really good, and you'd like to think he's going to be the guy, but we haven't seen enough from him yet to say that.
Starting point is 00:21:11 Julian Blackman, you want to see them re-sign him, but he's been really solid, is a great communicator, and I think he's an above-average safety. But again, free agent and hasn't really been able to stay healthy throughout his career. Had a career year this year, though, being about the healthiest he's been up until week 16 when he had the shoulder injury that ended his season. But I think you either need to add, obviously, if you add both of these, it's a slam dunk, but it's not realistic to think you're going to check all these boxes in one offseason. They either need to add a really good cover corner,
Starting point is 00:21:48 someone maybe a little more athletic or with a little more range and fluidity than Julius Brents, someone who's able to take the ball away, kind of an island cornerback. Put them on that side of the field, and you just don't have to worry about it. Again, you're not looking at Darrell Revis or anything, but look when the Colts had Bonte Davis and he was playing really good football. You could put him out there and not have to worry about anything. Davis was a really, really solid player. And then and or a playmaking instinctual safety. Now these guys, the safe, the safety market still in free agency and the draft
Starting point is 00:22:28 is just not super rich. I think the league doesn't really value them yet. I mean, as a whole, you get your guys like Derwin James, Jamal Adams, these type of Kyle Hamilton that get drafted high because they are crazy athletes. They're elite this and that, but in general, the top safety off the board and just like an average draft, I feel like they don't come off the board until late first, early second. And that could be the case again this year.
Starting point is 00:22:57 But I look at a guy like Cameron Kitchens from Miami, for example, a very smart guy who has played in a several, you know, a couple of different spots. Rangey, he's got ball skills. Very good communicator, very smart player. Does things well behind the scenes.
Starting point is 00:23:16 To me, one of my favorite safeties to study in the last few recent years coming into the league, it was Chauncey Gardner Johnson coming out of Florida for all those reasons you could see him play and see that he understood everything that was happening on the field and it wasn't that he was the best athlete on the field or fastest or biggest or this and that it was like he was the smartest or most most instinctual player on the field and so so I think those guys are super, super important. And again, there's not always a high premium put on them in the draft. So if you're looking for someone like that,
Starting point is 00:23:53 you know, Cameron Kinchin's in the second round, maybe you have to trade up a little bit for him. But someone like that can erase a lot of mistakes. Think of how many mistakes the Colts have had in the secondary this year. Breakdowns in communication causing big plays and or touchdowns. It's been a lot. And Julian Blackman alone can't wipe all that out. And again, free agent, we don't know if he's going to be back. So if you could get a really good cover corner somehow, draft, free agency, whatever, and then you get an an X, an instinctual smart playmaking
Starting point is 00:24:27 safety. Either of those would be great. Both obviously an a plus. Uh, but I think those are things that really need to be brought into this defense to get to the next level. And then I don't want to leave these guys behind. I'm running way long on the, on the second segment. Uh, but again, I mentioned EJ speed. I think he's up and coming. I think he's going to start having an even bigger impact. But again, I would like to see the Colts add a linebacker in coverage who's a little more capable. You don't want to rely on the development of certain guys you've got out there.
Starting point is 00:24:57 You need kind of quick solutions at times. And if you could find someone who could maybe be a solid dime linebacker, you could just throw out there an obvious passing downs. I think that'd be a plus for them. And then Grover Stewart, another free agent, but a guy I'm not really worried about not returning to the Colts. I think he is a high priority. Again, the six games without him was more than enough reason why the Colts need to bring him back. They don't have ample coverage behind him, number one. And number two, he is a difference maker. He is one of the best run defending defensive tackles in the league. Doesn't matter if it's three tech or nose, one tech, whatever.
Starting point is 00:25:36 He is one of the best run stoppers in the league. So he is a very vital part to the Colts defense. So coming up next, we'll finish up with the news and notes that the Colts have been making lately. This next segment is brought to us by our sponsor, BetterHelp. Sometimes we all need the opportunity to get something off of our chest, big or small. Certain things can really start to get to you. It's important to let that out, especially to someone who is unbiased in your life, like a counselor. For me, you know, I am very impatient and I don't love being out amongst the
Starting point is 00:26:11 crowds. So something insignificant to me, a tiny little things build up and, you know, can make me feel overwhelmed or, you know, just want to get it off my chest. It's not always big stuff. You know, third world problems, as they say, can be very real. You know, you're dealing with people at the grocery store who don't want to pick their items within five minutes and you're behind them waiting forever. You know, people in the parking lot, you know, making questionable decisions, your internet going out, stuff going on with your car. Again, stuff you feel bad about complaining about to people who have bigger problems, but to you, it affects you and makes you anxious or, you know, just puts you in a funk. Therapy can be different for everyone. Again, some people have traumas and big things to work
Starting point is 00:27:01 through. Some people just need to get all the crap off of their chest. Again, most of us have bigger problems than our favorite sports teams and how they're doing, whatever. But it's important to get those things off your chest every once in a while. So if you're thinking of starting therapy, give BetterHelp a try. It's entirely online, designed to be flexible and suited to your schedule. Because that's another big thing. Schedule flexibility. It, you know, it's not all during banking hours. You know, we all, a lot of us have jobs and we have stuff going on during the day.
Starting point is 00:27:32 So they have flexible hours and that's really helpful as well. Visit betterhelp.com slash locked on to get 10% off of your first month. That's betterhelp.com slash locked on. All right. So let's end up with some news and notes here. Most importantly, we got a positive update from Colts owner, Jim Ursae, who tweeted out on Tuesday on the mend, grateful for all the messages of love and support. So just kind of catching everyone up on this timeline here. So he tweeted that on Tuesday, which was the first tweet we've seen from his account since January 8th. So essentially a month on December 8th, emergency crews responded to his home. It was, I only want
Starting point is 00:28:23 to speak in facts or what we know or what's, you know, what's at least been solidly reported. One point, uh, I, I guess it was suspected to be an overdose, you know, by first responders. Uh, they, they gave him Narcan, which, uh, he got, they got a response from him out of, um, the 911 call has been released as well. Pete Ward, who placed the 911 call, mentioned it could be congestive heart failure. Whatever it is, it's a serious health matter. And, you know, it caused Ursae to have to go to the hospital. We're not really sure what the details are. Like, if he's still under treatment in the hospital, if he's home what what have you um the silence has kind of probably spurred him to send out that tweet honestly just to send some positive news out because you know if you've been following steven uh steven holder on twitter uh he mentioned you know at one point news didn't sound great but
Starting point is 00:29:21 lately it's been sounding a lot better conversations I've had and things I've heard as well. Things sounded a little glum as well. So this is definitely a positive step in the right direction. Um, so yeah, that's, that's definitely good news. I mean, all we could go off of is what we have heard. Uh, so it seems like things are getting better for Ursa, which is great. Not even really worried about what operations are when he can get back to doing his thing. You just hope for the guy's health that he can make a full recovery from whatever was going on with him recently. Now to some football matters now that the serious stuff is off the table.
Starting point is 00:30:01 The Colts have added a couple guys to their coaching staff. I'm not going to dive into these guys heavily now because I definitely want to do this with Zach. I know that Zach will be itching to get all the information he can about these guys to you. So we'll do more of a full episode on these guys. But the Colts added former Eagles quarterback coach Alex Tanning to their coaching staff. He is now reportedly the new passing game coordinator. That's not a position the Colts have had on staff since back in 2020. Former wide receivers coach Kevin Petullo was also the passing game coordinator. Another guy followed Nick Sirianni to Philadelphia. Also, former Titans defensive quality control coach Justin Hamilton
Starting point is 00:30:44 is now an assistant defensive backs coach with the colts uh fills that slot that was vacated by mike mitchell when the colts elected not to uh extend his contract so interesting moves there i don't know if we'll get to talk to those guys or shane steichen before the combine to get a little more information about them. But at the very least, we'll ask Shane about those guys at the combine. You know, maybe what led to, you know, Nate Ollie not being back, Mike Mitchell not being back, but then also get a little more information about these guys as well. Obviously, Zach just did a whole episode on their new defensive line coach as well.
Starting point is 00:31:24 So it looks like the Colts are making some pretty positive additions to their coaching staff. Everything that we know was vacated has been filled now. So this may be the last. These may be the last moves they make. It seems like they've got a full squad now. So that is it for us today. We'll be back with you guys tomorrow.
