On today's episode, we're going to be previewing the Houston Texans briefly.
Talk one segment talking about the Houston Texans and how they've looked so far this season
and what the Colts can expect for this upcoming game on Sunday.
Then we're going to look at the defense in segment two and really look at, is this thing even salvageable at this point?
Are they just so far behind with talent and scheme and everything that they just can't fix this?
Or is there a way to get the pieces in the right place for the Colts' team?
defense to at least be adequate this season. We'll talk about that in the second segment.
But first, we have the first injury report of the week here going into the week three
matchup with the Houston Texans. Not the worst injury report, all things considered. Now,
the Colts did place two players on the IR recently. They put Alec Pierce on IR this morning,
and Michael Clemens was placed on IR yesterday. So they're not going to be on this practice
report, but they are going to be out for an extended period of time. With Alec Pierce, we talked
about him yesterday on the show, so I don't want to go into too much detail with that one,
because we already spent a good portion of a show yesterday talking on them. But yeah, just a major
loss for the Colts, right? Alec Pierce was paid to be the star number one wide receiver. In
week one, he was easily their best wide receiver. Week two, he gets hurt and the rest is history,
right? And we're going to see what that means for the rest of the year for the Colts. He's planning
to rehab the injury instead of have surgery. So we'll see if we see him again at another point later in
the season. He's going to be.
out at least four weeks and it could be even longer than that. Dary Slayton was signed to fill that
role and I think he'll be out there as early as Sunday and then a much bigger role after that as well.
For the rest of the injury report, though, a pretty clean practice. Ashton Doolin missed practice
with an ankle injury. He missed all of last week with an ankle injury as well. So already missing
this first practice probably doesn't bode well for his chances of playing on Sunday. And then
cornerback Mooney Ward who left on Sunday's game with a groin injury, he did miss this practice
as well. We'll see if he can get back to practice the next two days, but I wouldn't count on him
playing on Sunday. So when it comes to replacements for these two players, I expect Anthony Gould to
probably get the call up yet again for Doolin, unless they feel so much more confident about
Dion Berks, because I know the long-term plan is to get Berks back there on kick return and punt
return eventually this season. But until they feel comfortable putting him back there, it'll probably
be Anthony Gould called up yet again
just to return some punts and
return some kicks on Sunday.
Hopefully he actually chooses to catch the punts
instead of letting them go over his head
for like 60 yards like he did
against the Kansas City Chiefs. But
I expect that we'll see a little bit more
of him on Sunday instead of
Doolin's out. And then when it comes to
Mooney Ward's spot, I think we're going to see
Justin Wally kick outside and play
outside corner and then Cam Taylor
Britt come in and play some of that nickel corner.
This is something that they played with throughout
the offseason here and with Wally's struggles in the slot so far through two games,
this might be a blessing in disguise for the young corner because it is so difficult to play
a slot corner, the two-way goes that you're facing, especially when like week one, the matchup
against Zay Flowers was just a nightmare matchup for a young player.
So maybe getting more to the outside, having the sideline protecting him against those
two-way goes, can get his confidence and his technique back to the level that you want it to be.
I still don't think his play has been as bad as what like next-gen stats say,
because they have a weird charting method where it's like as long as you're the closest defender
to a player who catches the ball, you get charted as being at fault.
I don't think that's simply the case.
But even if that's not the case, he's Hill has given up a couple big plays,
including the touchdown to Travis Kelsey in this past game.
So again, maybe moving him back outside can rebuild some of that confidence.
After that, the cornerback rotation will probably be Gushicken.
There's going to get in there a little bit at Slot Corner, I'm sure,
and we'll see maybe another practice squad call up.
to backfill that position. But yeah, corner is starting to deal with some injuries. I know
Soss Gardner watching the film back was really hampered by that rib injury on a couple
occasions. I know he left the game briefly against the Chiefs and also had another moment where he
stayed down a bit long. He did not pop up on this injury report at all. So that's a pretty good sign for
the goals. We'll see if that's him managing the injury or if he just, again, it was something that
healed pretty quickly. So only two players out of practice, Ashton Dulin and Mooney Ward. There
were a couple players limited in Keenan Allen and Jonathan Taylor, but both of those were listed
as rest days for the veterans. And the Colts typically do do this with a couple of their veterans on
the roster, just manage their workload throughout the season, give them a couple rest days.
And before you guys come to the comments and say, that's why the Colts are so soft and that's
why they're a bad team. Teams around the league do do this with veteran players. It's not an uncommon
practice. It's a way to keep the load off of these guys' bodies. I think Grover-Stewart's
rest day is Thursday. Every single week, DeForest Buckner's is typically on Fridays.
And Jonathan Taylor, it looks like it's going to be on Wednesday. And it looks like Keenan Allen,
now for the rest of the year, is going to be on Wednesdays and Sundays, because clearly he is
taking those rest days on Sundays as well. But yeah, like, I think that that's just going to be
the plan to manage the workload for these guys going forward. There were a couple of players
that were on the injury but had full practices like Matt Consolves was on there with a foot
injury, but he had a full practice. Lequan Treadwell with a shoulder injury had a full
practice. So nothing too crazy there, nothing to worry about with those players because, again,
they practiced in full. But again, the real part that we're going to be looking at is the
Ashton Doolin injuries and the Mooney Ward injuries, how that impacts things going forward.
Honestly, the Ashton Doolin injury still kind of looms a little bit big now because of
Alec Pierce being on IR now, right? Because Doolin would have been expected to step up into a bigger
role. He's a player that's been around the program for a couple years and obviously has that
rapport with the quarterback, with the coaching staff and all that.
And now the Colts just have to keep going down the line to more unproven commodities behind
Josh Downs, right?
So Keenan Allen, who has struggled through two weeks and hopefully can ramp up and get back
to being at least what he was last year.
He's going to have to take on a bigger role.
Darius Slayton, who has the chemistry with Daniel Jones, but doesn't really have the
chemistry with the offense as of right now.
We'll probably have to take a bigger role than expected this weekend.
And then guys like Treadwell and Dionne Burke are going to be expected to do at least a
little bit of carrying the load for the offense too. So the dual and injury certainly looms large
as well as the Alec Pierce injury, which is the biggest injury on the roster right now,
and then the Mooney Ward one as well. And since we haven't really talked about it, and I have
a little bit of time at the end of the segment, with Michael Clemens going on IR, I don't want to
cheer on like an injury or anything like that. That's just not the nature of how I want to cover
this team. So I know way am I saying this is a good thing for the Colts. But the Colts do need to
get some of this youth on the roster, like on the field a little bit more.
And Michael Clemens was playing poorly and kind of blocking guys like Caden Curry and George
Gums Jr. guys who I think are at least going to have more effort on the field.
So to spin this in a positive way, I think the injury opens the door for those players to get
out there. And then obviously the biggest implication of all this is going to be Atatomi
and Atabora getting more pass rushing snaps on third down. For some reason, Michael Clemens was
getting a lot of that run out there along.
side to Forrest Buckner and the rest of the past rushing group, that should have always been Tommy.
Again, just one of the many personnel things that just don't make sense with this defensive
coaching staff right now.
But now this should be Tommy out there a little bit more, which is a good thing for the team.
So Michael Clemens going to IR might lead to some positive developments for the defense,
is the best I'll say right now with that injury.
So, yeah, that's your weekly injury report here on Wednesday.
Coming up, though, we're going to get to our main topic of this show and talk about the Colts defense.
I've watched enough of this Colts defensive film through two weeks to say it's bad.
It's really bad right now.
But is this salvageable?
Like, can they actually fix this in any meaningful way going forward?
I'm going to break it all down here in just a moment.
Running a business shouldn't feel like you're trying to connect a bunch of systems that were never designed to work together.
One app for accounting, another for inventory, another for sales, and somehow none of them actually talk to each other.
That's where Odu comes in.
Odo is an all-in-one business management software.
that brings every part of your business together in one powerful platform.
From sales and accounting to inventory and marketing, everything works in one place.
Odo is one platform to manage, grow, and scale your business.
The best organizations know that success isn't just about acquiring talent.
It's about having everyone working towards the same goal.
And that's true in sports, just like it is in business.
Speaking of the Colts defense, right, you can have all the talent in the world in the secondary,
but those guys aren't communicating and they're not knowing where they have to be on every single down.
you will see the disasters that we are seeing on Sunday the last two weeks.
Great organizations win because operations matter, and that's why you should get O-D-O-D-O-D-O-Matter.
And that's why you should get O-D-O-D-O-M-A-M-M-A-M-M-A-L-U-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-L-Lock-on.
And that means Sundays are about to get a whole lot more interesting.
Every week brings new matchups, breakout players, big performances, and plenty of storylines to follow.
And if you like getting even more engaged with the players and stats that you're watching,
there's a new way to make game day even more exciting.
Prize Picks is bringing out the best offer yet for kickoff.
New users who sign up and get $150 in lineups if they win their first $5 lineup.
And prize picks is now available nationwide.
With prize picks, you're building daily fantasy lineups by choosing two to six players
and selecting more or less on their projected stats like passing yards, rushing yards,
or fantasy score.
I love this feature because if I just want to watch one game,
I can pick a bunch of players in one game,
or if I want to go back and forth between two or three,
I can make sure my players are within the games,
then I'm going to be watching and paying attention to on Sundays.
So download the app today and use code Locked on NFL
to get $150 instantly in lineups if you win your first $5 lineup prize picks.
Run your game.
All righty, Locked on Colts Everdaers, we are back.
We're going to talk about this defense.
But before we do, don't forget to check out the Everdair Club for ad-free episodes
and access to a group chat with other listeners of this show,
me and Jake, tap the link in the show notes, or go to lockdown colts.supercast.com.
So where do we start when it comes to talking about this Colts defense?
Honestly, the thing is, it's not even just one thing, right?
I've talked about this a lot since the beginning of the year.
If it were just communication, if it were just talent, if it were just scheme issues,
those could be overcome by the other two factors.
But because it's all three, you are getting the mess that is the Colts defense right now,
giving up a near historic amount of yards through two weeks.
averaging, what, 37 points per game against them the last two weeks,
almost 11 yards per pass attempt against play action,
or off of play action through two games.
Like every metric you look at,
they're like the worst rush defense, one of the worst past defenses.
There is nothing good with this Colts defense right now.
They have zero turnovers forced through two weeks.
I mean, it has just been a mess.
And again, it starts with those three pillars of communication, scheme, and talent.
All three of them have been bad.
The communication, uh,
from week one and week two did improve,
but there were still issues,
like in the red zone on the touchdown to Xavier Worthy,
the motion across into the bunch.
Nobody picked up Xavier Worthy because nobody knew who to play on that one.
On the deep pass to Taekwon Thornt in the second half,
that should have been a Tampa two,
and the deep safety didn't roll over the back
and get in front of that crosser,
which led to a 53-yard completion down to the one-yard line.
Things like that are still happening with this defense,
and it's really killing them on Sundays as of right now.
scheme is also a big issue right now where luana rumo i think ben boris on you know at colts film
room on social is explained it best where it's like it's like someone watched a lot of brian flores
and got excited about it and then try to run it with their jv high school team like the guys
are just not operating well within this system that is trying to be diverse or trying to run
invert cover two on one play cover one man on another play uh bailing into certain coverages
and getting into these zone drops that guys are just not fully comprehending.
And as a result, guys are not playing fast.
They're second-guessing themselves, and they're getting gassed out there on Sunday.
So this scheme is almost over-complicated for the guys that they're throwing on the field,
and they almost need to simplify it to make things better.
And then just the talent, I mean, going into the season, not just us on Locked-on Colts.
Everybody talked about this, right?
From national media to local media to you at home talking to your parents or talking to your best friends about the Colts,
Man, I like this team, but this front seven's talent is not good enough to get the job done this year.
The whole reason I picked them to win eight or nine games this season is because I didn't have belief in that front seven,
even though I had a lot of belief in the secondary, which has not really been, you know, coming to fruition this year,
but I had a lot of belief in the offense as well, which has been fine.
The front seven's talent going into the year was poor, and it has shown through two weeks.
I mean, their base defense is starting guys like Jerry Tilleri, is starting guys like Arden Key,
Jalen Carlize and Akeen Davis Gaither at the moment.
That was never going to be good enough.
And we are seeing that on the games.
So again, these three pillars are all coming together to make just dreadful, dreadful play for the Colts right now.
But I do think there are some avenues to make things better.
There are some avenues where they can at least alleviate some of these issues.
And I do think it starts with the youth movement on defense.
Look, I understand having veterans out there because veterans had been there, done that.
And for this complicated scheme, maybe you want guys who just know terminology a little bit better and know the speed of the NFL a little bit better.
But here's the thing.
The communication's already been awful with these veterans out there.
At least if you get some of these young players on the field, I know that they're going to play with their hair on fire.
I know that they're going to be all over the place.
They're going to make the same mistakes.
But they're going to be making them at 100 miles per hour instead of like Tillerie and Davis Gait,
making them at two miles per hour.
So I do think that getting some of these younger players out there,
so guys like, again, Tilleri, Clemens, Davis Gather, Carlyce,
get them out of the lineup or at least rotate them out more
and get more of Bryce Betcher, more of Tim Smith,
George Gumbs Jr., Caden Curry, and the big one, C.J. Allen,
get C.J. Allen on the field.
I don't know why he's not playing on the field.
I mean, they've explained why he's not playing,
but again, it can't be worse.
In six snaps on Sunday, he was the best linebacker that the Colts had.
It wasn't much.
He didn't really do much of anything.
in those snaps, but again, he wasn't a negative.
So he was the best linebacker they had in that game.
Get these younger players on the field.
I know this has been a constant complaint with Luana Rumo.
His entire time as a defensive coordinator,
it is time for him to turn a corner or he's going to be without a job here soon.
So they do need to get these younger players involved a little bit more
because, again, these older players are playing poorly.
The effort's not there.
The speed is not there.
At least get the effort in speed out there.
If they're going to play poorly, they're going to play poorly fast.
at least, and I will take that at this point with the defense.
Another big one, I think, to make this defense a little bit more salvageable, though,
is they have to simplify the scheme.
They really do.
I understand what Anarumo is trying to do.
He's trying to be like a Brian Flores type,
but still keeping some of his basic principles from the Cincinnati Bengals,
and it's just not working.
These guys are not communicating well.
Every motion is just leading to an open wide receiver.
Every under center play action is getting free wide receivers running.
They are just trying to.
do too much with this defense right now with a lot of their sim pressure looks with a lot of how they are
maneuvering pre-impose snap they need to simplify this they need to find staples that work i'm not saying
go to gus bradley and say let's just go all cover three all the time even though that probably would
result a little bit better for this colts team with them what's happening right now because you wouldn't be
blowing coverages but they do need to find more staples whether that is living in quarters a little
bit more, whether that's living in cover two a little bit more, whether that is, you know, whatever.
Like, it has to be something else besides just, oh, we like to run cover one man, which that is
kind of their only staple right now. They need to find other stables. Heck, one of your stables could just
be zero blitzes, right? Zero blitzes and say, we're going to live and die by the blitz.
We're going to blitz at like a 60% rate and who cares what happens. Whatever the staple is,
you have to find another staple. And that's just, they really need to simplify this scheme a little bit more.
It's too much of just this cutesy stuff that is not working.
They need to be a little bit more succinct with what they want to accomplish.
And this week's going to be a big test in general, right?
It's one thing to get just destroyed by Pat Mahomes and Lamar Jackson, right?
Lamar Jackson, Wednesday flowers for a good chunk of that game.
Pat Mahomes with this superstar running back.
I guess Lamar Jackson, too, with Derek Henry.
I should also put that in there.
So it is one thing to get destroyed by those teams, right?
Those are going to be Hall of Fame quarterbacks, a Hall of Fame running back,
and Derek Henry, Kenneth Walker's on a great trajectory at this point too.
So, yeah, it's one thing to get beat by them.
The Houston Texans are not those teams, though.
The Houston Texans, potentially without Nico Collins, with C.J. Stroud, who's been
up and down his entire career at this point, with our run game that has been putrid through
two weeks, it is one thing, again, to lose to those Hall of Fame quarterbacks.
But to C.J. Stroud and the Texans, if they drop 30 on you, if they drop 500 yards on
you, I don't know if we can really bounce back from that.
So this is going to be a major, major test for this defense this week.
Can they show any sign of life in this game?
That'll be the ultimate test.
But I do think there are ways to salvage this, get younger, and simplify the scheme.
And I think that they can at least achieve better results on Sundays going forward.
But coming up, we're going to talk about those Houston Texans and how this was a matchup that was very scary prior to the season.
Maybe it's not as scary now, even though the Texans still pose a pretty big threat to this Colts team.
on Sunday. We're going to get to that in just a moment. A quiz on your phone and a box at your door
isn't a clinic. When it comes to men's health, things like energy, sleep, drive, and how you feel
day to day deserve more than just a questionnaire. Game Day men's health is a real in-person
men's health clinic with more than 430 locations across the U.S. and Canada. Men can meet face-to-face
with a licensed clinician, get labs drawn in office, and receive initial results in as little as 15 minutes.
Game Day look to the full picture, your symptoms and your lab results before developing a treatment plan.
And because they continue testing and evaluating, care can be adjusted over time based on your data.
And look, guys, men's health is one of the most important things out there for us.
We neglect it.
We don't really take enough care of it.
And this is something that makes it convenient, easy, and something that you can stay on top of as you get older here.
So convenience matters.
But so does having a place that's built around men's health.

How rewarding are we talking?
More rewarding than a touchdown with time expiring, more rewarding with an 18-point comeback,
and maybe even more rewarding than an offensive lineman catching a touchdown.
This season, Fandul is making the excitement go beyond.
what happens on the field with all new Fandul Rewards Club featuring exclusive offers,
surprises, and much more.
Every week, check the Fandul app and see what's waiting for you.
The Texans are favored by two and a half at Lucas Oil Stadium this weekend.
If you were thinking that's a bit crazy for these two O and two teams, go bet on the Colts now.
A touchdown with time expiring is tough to beat.
An 18-point comeback, even better.
And if an offensive lineman catches a touchdown, I mean, that's pretty much the ultimate
football reward. Make this your most rewarding season ever with Fandul. Visit Fandul.com to get started.
Alrighty, Locked on Colts everydayers, we are back for a final time, giving an early, early look
at the Houston Texans. Jake will have you covered tomorrow with the crossover show with Locked
on Texans to give you the full rundown. But I want to give my quick thoughts on this Texans team
through two weeks. And I want to kind of paint this picture that I think is really funny because
these are two 0-2 teams and one team is getting completely buried.
Their season's over.
We know for a fact they're not making the playoffs, while the other team is still one of the
premier contenders and the ASC.
But I think through two weeks, you could really describe these two teams fairly similar,
right?
I mean, I'm just going to say this generally without saying which team I'm talking about,
but there's been a blowout loss for both these teams to an ASC North contender,
right?
Blowout loss.
And then there was a very close, hard-fought loss to one of the
better teams in the AFC for both them as well. I think you could describe both their
defenses as really struggling through two weeks, albeit against some great quarterbacks,
probably arguably the best quarterbacks in the AFC. And also, their offenses have had
really bipolar weeks, right, where one week they looked great, another week where it was less
than great for their offense. Again, this is both these teams we're talking about here. I'm not really
picking out the Colts or the Texans. So I think it's been much of the same story for both of these
two teams so far to start the year.
Two really tough matchups.
The Texans had the Bengals with Joe Burrow and everything they're doing there and the in the
Bills.
The Colts have had the chiefs and the in the Ravens.
So now it's a big test to see which one of these teams can overcome the the first two
weeks, right?
Because odds are when you start 0 and 2, only like one team in the NFL each year at best will
make the playoffs from 0 and 2.
So really, whoever lose this game, it doesn't mean you're officially out of it, but it's
pretty close to it. So this is going to be a do-or-die situation for both teams that are in a very,
very similar spot. But when I look at the Texans, you know, their defense struggling has been
one of the bigger stories. 20 points allowed to the Bengals last week and Joe Burrow was able to connect
with Jamar Chase for two touchdowns. And then obviously in week one, Josh Allen was just shredding
their defense and left and right to put up a very high point total against a very good defense.
I think the loss of Caden McDonnell has loomed large. They're one of their early picks from
this past draft.
And I do think it has changed the way they've approached some things on defense.
And then on top of that, their big free agent signing, Reid Blankenship, has given up a
couple touchdowns and coverage as well.
So that could be an area to exploit for their defense.
But they still have Will Anderson.
They still have Danielle Hunter, Al Schaer at linebacker, Derek Stingley, Lasseter
at corner.
Like, they still have a lot of talent on defense.
So I'm not going to sit here and say, this is some awful defense.
They had a rough two weeks stretch against two of the best quarterbacks in the league.
So I think that they're going to be fine on defense.
The bigger question for the Texans always is their offense, though.
They had a really, really weird week last week against the Bengals.
Down Nico Collins, down, obviously, you know,
they had big wide receiver injury prior to the season as well.
So they were very limited at the wide receiver room,
but they ran a lot of 11 personnel against the Bengals,
and it really backfired for them.
Their running game was just putrid,
and that's back-to-back weeks for their running game.
It's just not been good at a lot of.
all and you just are seeing this very inconsistent approach from that side of the side of the ball for the
Texans like I think they wanted to come into the season being this like power running football team like
look at all the guys they brought in right keelan rutledge this massive massive player they're putting at center
uh braiden smith they brought in Trent brown is back in their irsery at the other tackle position
like Wyatt teller they brought in as well like this is a bruising offensive line that you think they
want to come out here and run a lot of power and just really get behind their pads and and and get
downhill, but the running game has just not been great for them through two weeks, especially
this past week in Stexter Lawrence and the Cincinnati Bengals. And as a result, their passing
attack has just been, again, like really good in week one against the bills. And then week two,
where they didn't have any kind of running attack and they were in these third and long situations.
They were really struggling to get points on the board, finishing the day with only six against
the Bengals. So I think CJ Stroud is still kind of C.J. Stroud back there where you're going
to see a lot of really good moments from him, some high-level throws.
but the down-to-down consistency is still kind of lacking.
Overall, the pressure response isn't great,
and he's more comfortable attacking the middle of the field
than he is anywhere else.
So it's going to be a big test for this Gold's defense
just because they have always kind of been up and down against Stroud.
They usually limit the points against him a bit,
but he still has, like, huge numbers against them,
so we'll see if much of the same continues this weekend.
But, yeah, I think this is going to be a tough matchup.
Like maybe the Texans aren't on the same level of the Ravens or the Chiefs, right?
I do think those two teams are probably better than the Texans at this point in the season,
especially if Nico Collins is not going to play.
But they do still pose a pretty tough task with that defense having the two edge rushers.
It's going to be the first time that Jaylon Travis has really tested for the Colts this season.
He's been fine through two weeks, but he's going to be really tested in this game.
And then I think without having Alec Pierce, that Texans defense,
is really going to tee off and get after the Colts.
On the other side of the ball, I think Stroud is the type of quarterback who has success
against the defense that has the linebacker play that the Colts have.
You know, like they're going to pepper those in-breaking routes over the middle of the field,
and it's just going to be on this Colts defense to, one, limit the run game and force the Texans
into third and long situations, and then two, making sure they can squeeze those middle
of the field routes and force CJ Stroud to throw it more outside the numbers.
He's still an accurate quarterback, like he'll still make a lot of
a lot of those throws, but just forcing him off platform and throwing it outside the numbers,
rather than letting him get into his three-and-five-step drops, hitting that back foot
and ripping one over the middle. That is where he is at his best, and he's always been at his
best in that regard. So, yeah, the Texans still a tough task. They have struggled so far
through two games, but they are a team that certainly shows up to play against the Colts. I think
Shane Seichen is 1 in 5 in his time against the Texans, and his games against the Texans as the Colts
head coach, and I think his only win was the first game he played against the Texans, which was in
2023, where Richardson got hurt early on, and Gardner-Minschew had to come in and close that
game out for the win. Since then, it has been all Texans in this matchup, and the Colts have
not really been able to respond in any meaningful way. So if the Colts want to get their season
back on track, it starts on Sunday. They have to win this game, and then they'll only be, what,
one game back in the division or tied for the division lead, potentially. A lot can change with the
win on Sunday.
So big week for the Colts against the Texans team that, again, I think it's a step back from the last two teams the Colts have played, but not a huge step back.
I think there's still a pretty solid football team that the Colts are going to have to be ready for.
But let me know in the comment section what you think about this upcoming matchup, where you lean as of right now.
