Give Mike Ernest a call at 317-285-9691. And today we're going to go through our pro football focus grades. Again, the updated one. Some of the guys have moved up. Some of the guys have kind of stayed, kind of stood pat. And we're also, I'm also going to give you guys a little bit of a background on this matchup that we're getting ready to face here this Sunday in Lucas Oil Stadium against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Colts with Luck at quarterback are 3-0 versus the Chiefs since 2012. Luck's had some pretty good games. They did play that epic game in the 2013 playoffs where Luck started out the game with, I think,
Starting point is 00:02:12 three picks in the first half, or at least two, and the third one came on the first pass in the second half. It was brutal. But he did end up with 29-45 for 443, four touchdowns and three picks. But overall, in the three games that Luck has played against the Chiefs, and the reason I bring these up is because the Chiefs have kind of been a very similar team over these years.
Starting point is 00:02:39 Now, Alex Smith's only played in two of those games the 2013 season. But the basis of this Kansas City team, despite the different parts that may come or go each year, are typically run very similar to that of the previous years. So it's the Andy Reid-style offense. Their defense has been largely the same over the past several years. So Luck is going to be facing something that's similar. I mean, he's going to see some different looks, no doubt. He's seeing guys that he's seen in the past few years. They haven't played since the 2013 playoff game,
Starting point is 00:03:20 and that does not seem that long ago. It's so weird how that's actually been that long. But anyways, luck against these Chiefs has been 72 of 117, 61.5% completion rate, thrown for 889 yards, six touchdowns, and three picks. The only three picks were in that playoff game. So he's kind of lit them up a little bit. Like I said, the Colts are 3-0 against them. As a team, the averages, if you want to go by what they've scored against each other in the past. Now that first season, that 2012 season, the Chiefs were quarterbacked by Brady Quinn.
Starting point is 00:04:08 However, they did get 13 points on the board, which as far as the regular season game goes, was more than Alex Smith could put up. He only put up seven. But their averages are 29.3 points a game for the Colts and 21.3 points for the Chiefs. So if you want to go off a strict averages, which kind of means absolutely nothing, it's been a few years, a couple years, the Colts should maybe win 29-21. That's not going to be my prediction, but that's what they've got so far. The turnovers for each team in their three meetings, the Colts have only had four, which was, like I said, three of those were those three interceptions in the playoff game. But the Chiefs have had eight in their three games against each other.
Starting point is 00:04:49 The Chiefs have run for 657 yards in their three games. That's a ton. So that's their definite strong point, and that's going to be their strong point. With Spencer Ware, their running game, and they have a lot of options out of it. Spencer Ware is a heck of a receiver, too, so he's going to be catching a lot of balls out of the backfield, and they've got some downfield threats now there in Kansas City, so it's not strictly tight ends as the narrative may have been pointing to in the past couple seasons. But on the other side of that, the Colts have thrown, as I said, for 889 yards, so the Colts passing game has obviously been the strong point for the
Starting point is 00:05:25 Colts. And I mean, that's not a surprise to anybody. Alex Smith has run for 104 yards as a quarterback. He's got four touchdowns and an interception in his two games against the Colts, which is pretty good. I mean, they, you know, that was one of the things that kind of killed the Colts. You know, they'd get in the third down situations against them, and I believe the majority of this was in the playoff game. And they'd have him stopped, and he'd move out of the pocket, and he'd get himself a first down for the team and keep drives moving. And that's what he's good at.
Starting point is 00:06:01 He's very, you know, him and Luck are nothing alike as far as quarterback in general, but he's very much like, they're both very much, very similar in that regard that they're able to do that for their teams, especially for their offenses. T.Y. Hilton's kind of feasted on him a little bit. He had, you know, keep that in mind that one of his first game was against them
Starting point is 00:06:20 in his rookie season, and his big game was the playoff game, but he's got 310 total receiving yards with two touchdowns against them in their three games. So if he gets 103 yards and a touchdown against him, that means that he's probably having a pretty good day, and so is Andrew Luck. So that was just a real quick throw together of some things that we can kind of see.
Starting point is 00:06:50 Neither team is very different from when they were in 2013, to be quite honest. Like I said, a lot of the Chiefs, things that they do are very similar to what they've done. It's a systematic process for them as well. And the Colts have always had to rely on the arm of Andrew Luck. So with that, that's just kind of the way it is. The Colts are going to rely on the arm of Andrew Luck. Alex Smith is going to be a game manager. He'll be effective. He probably won't turn the ball over very much. So the Colts are going to have to, you know, Spencer Ware's been kind of turnover prone a little bit. So the Colts will have to try to get him and maybe a receiver to cough the ball up or something. But Alex Smith's pretty careful with the ball. He does a good job pushing his team
Starting point is 00:07:33 downfield, or getting his team moving downfield, I guess I should say. And Kansas City's defense is known to bring the pressure. So the Colts' offensive line is going to be absolutely key this week. Hopefully they can put together line is going to be absolutely key this week. Hopefully they can put together another game similar to what they did this past week against the Titans. And the running game has to be effective. Gore doesn't have to run for 100 some plus yards. He has to be able to get those third down and short opportunities and convert them. And he's got to be able to catch out of the backfield. And he's got to be able to get those third down and short opportunities and convert them. And he's got to be able to catch out of the backfield and he's got to be able to get five, six yards on first down or whatever, you know, just those things keep the defense guessing and keep them honest against Andrew Luck
Starting point is 00:08:16 and doesn't just allow them just to absolutely come up field as much as they could. So with that, it's going to be an interesting game. I think that it's going to be probably one of the better games of the year for the Colts. I mean, it'll be one of the most interesting at least. And I think the Colts have a lot to, I mean, the Colts do this, it seems like every year and they're especially doing it this year. And it's not so much that I'm in belief that Pagano's resurging this team, because I absolutely don't believe that. But this team does have a way, and I think it's the players, that they do have a way of bringing themselves back from the dead, so to speak. Now, if the Colts can get to 500 with this win, that's huge, regardless of what they do in Lambeau in the following week previous to the bye if they
Starting point is 00:09:06 can get themselves to 500 and then either be a game up or a game below 500 going into the bye week that's honestly I mean that's better than what I assumed that they'd be just a couple short weeks ago even last week maybe so it's going to be interesting to see how they play, especially at home. Only one of those games, which was the playoff game, was at home. The Colts beat the Chiefs twice at their place. So the Colts, you know, do they start fast? Do they end good? We don't know. Hopefully they can put four quarters, at least three and a half solid quarters of dominant football together, which is a stretch, but it's the hope. So if they can do that, we'll just hope that they can be up by two scores at
Starting point is 00:09:51 that time and the prevent defense and the lackadaisical effort that we've seen typical for this team at times doesn't come back and doesn't have an opportunity to actually win the game for the Chiefs. So let me tell you a little bit more about my man, Mike Earnest. Are you in the market to sell your home? If so, call Mike Earnest at Century 21 Sheets. All right, let's get into these pro football focus grades. Andrew Luck is up to spot number two, as we expect. Of course, Tom Brady's ahead of him. This is kind of nice, getting right back to where we have Andrew Luck, right where we expect him to be, playing at an MVP caliber this season. He's been phenomenal. He's at an 89.4 grade overall. He's above guys like Andy Dalton, Matthew Stafford, Carson Wentz has dropped to fifth, Drew Brees, Sam Bradford. So,
Starting point is 00:12:23 according to Pro Football Focus, you could say that Andrew Luck is having a top-notch season and like I said of course Tom Brady's there this is kind of reminiscent of the old Peyton Manning Tom Brady days where those guys are up near the top and we've got our guy every bit as good as their guy and it it's just interesting to see. And it's just, it's just great to see Andrew playing at such a high level, despite some of the misfortunes of the rest of the roster. So, and that running back Gore has jumped up to the number 24 overall spot with a 67.9 grade. And this is really nice to see as well. It goes to show you, I mean, 24th isn't like top five, so don't get me wrong, but his grade, again, I'm going to continue to compare it this way. If you get him three extra
Starting point is 00:13:11 points, he's in the top 15. I'm sorry. If you give him five extra points, he's in the top 15, 16. Okay. He's been fantastic. He's getting those short yardage runs. He's getting good first down yardage and he's a heck of a pass blocker. He is Frank Gore. We know everything we need to know about him. He's phenomenal, and he doesn't need 100 yards every game for him to prove that to us, regardless of what the national talking heads will talk about. They'll all say that the Colts don't have a running game, and they don't have a dominant running game, but they have a running game that can compliment Andrew Luck enough as long as the offensive line holds up because the offensive line is a pretty decent run blocking unit, in my opinion. T.Y. Hilton at wide receiver. He is 10th
Starting point is 00:13:56 overall with an 83.4 grade at this moment. I think that that's a good spot for him. I think he's a definite top 10 receiver in this league. And I don't think it's even of question, to be quite honest with you. He's been phenomenal this year. He's proven that he can get open against anybody. He's running crisper routes that I've seen. He's typically a round-off route runner, if that makes any sense to you guys. Whereas when he gets to the top of his route, a lot of times he rounds off his, his, uh, his brakes as opposed to a clean,
Starting point is 00:14:30 like a real hard clean cut. But a lot of his routes are designed as such. Um, they need him to be at top speed the entire time. And that allows him to do that. And his routes have been more precise. So that's definitely, uh, uh, something that's resulted from that. Dorsett is all the way down at 90. And then Chester Rogers is at 94. Those guys are 52.5 and 51.7, respectively. Chester Rogers is much better than I think a lot of us assumed that he would be. We knew that he would be the guy in the back of the roster, so to speak, that would come in in certain situations and packages and do what he was expected to do.
Starting point is 00:15:17 But I don't think that any of us really expected him to be as dependent on. I think luck depends on him quite a bit, actually. So now here's the kickerer here i'm not going to get into duane allen as much but he and jack doyle are only three spots apart at 31 for doyle and 34 for allen i think this is a major issue i talked to you guys about this yesterday on the podcast about how he's doyle has caught 29 of 29 of his 33 targets, which is phenomenal. And if you guys follow Kevin Bowen, Colts writer for Colts.com, he actually tweeted out today that that is best among tight ends with 11 targets or more with the catch percentage. And I kind of figured that it was.
Starting point is 00:15:59 I think that I alluded to that, but I wasn't exactly sure. I hadn't researched it myself, so I didn't want to say one way or the other. But today we found out from Kevin that it was. My problem isn't so much where Dwayne Allen is at at 34. My problem is where Jack Doyle is at and then where he is in relation to Dwayne Allen, because Dwayne Allen has not been very good this year. He's not been terrible, don't get me wrong, but he's definitely dropping more balls Jack Doyle belongs ahead of Mercedes Lewis Vernon Davis Nick O'Leary I mean come on this is pathetic you know it's just it's not accurate in that uh as far as I'm concerned in that context I just don't I just
Starting point is 00:16:39 really don't like that that's where where he's at I think that's a garbage ranking so you got they can I guess you know this is one of those things where pro football focus you can tell when something they're doing doesn't fit what you see with your eyes so if they want to knock him for run blocking or pass blocking or something garbage like that Jack Doyle is one of the top tight ends in the league and there's not much that anybody's going to tell me otherwise to convince me. So now when we get to the tackles, Anthony Costanzo is at 14th. He's kind of quietly there. I'm not – you know, he hasn't been great.
Starting point is 00:17:17 He was pretty – he's been pretty good this year. I'm not – you know, we as Colts fans knock on him a little bit because he's supposed to be the guy on the line, you know, we as Colts fans knock on him a little bit because he's supposed to be the guy on the line, you know, and he really I guess I don't think that we feel that he has necessarily been the guy. But he is 14th. He is in the top 15 in the league. And that's pretty nice considering there's two or two tackles per team, you know, starting at least. So that that's a good thing. And then Joe Reitz is making an appearance here at 68th
Starting point is 00:17:47 and I think he played a pretty good game this past weekend too and I hope that he can build off of that for this coming weekend because we don't necessarily know what's going on with Muhort yet I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that Muhort may not play this weekend but that's total conjecture and I don't know know for sure, but that's just my guess, and Muhor, on the other hand, he also is at 14th for guards, and he's had a phenomenal year. We missed him this weekend, but Joe Hegg filled in very nicely for him, and Joe Hegg's going to be a hell of a piece, guys. Now, here's the thing. Like I said, I'm pretty sure that I've said this before on here, that I understand that the Colts' offensive line at this moment
Starting point is 00:18:29 is allowing too many pressures. They're getting too much this and that. And they are, and you're right. And no one's, you know, I'm not going to debate that necessarily. But I am very hopeful for this offensive line, very hopeful, because I think that they have the potential with the pieces that they've currently got to be one of the better lines in the league here in the next year or two.
Starting point is 00:18:51 And that is going to be, if you want to say, the real year. Now, we absolutely have to have a couple good quality drafts in the meantime and keep people healthy and so on and so forth. But this offensive line, guys, is going to be a strength of this team in the next two years. Mark my words, if I'm wrong, I don't care. But I definitely don't think I'm wrong. And Joe Haig is sitting at 63rd at 52.5. Denzel Good at 65th at 50.3.
Starting point is 00:19:22 So not great grades from them, but know uh what we're getting from them and there there's certainly a lot of depth along this line and that's a good thing because the colts didn't have this option you know they're putting guys in like jonathan harrison and they may still at certain points but jonathan harrison is definitely not being that he's sick of course so that he's had his issues with his surgery, but he's definitely not going to beat out Haig, in my opinion, or Denzel Good for any starting snaps, that's for sure. Ryan Kelly is at 17th currently with a 78.8 grade.
Starting point is 00:19:58 He's been pretty good. I do have – now, I'm not trying to knock on Ryan Kelly because I think he's been great, especially for a rookie. But I do have a problem with some of pro football focuses saying that he didn't allow pressure or he hasn't allowed a sack or this or that. Look, if you guys watch the games and you see the center, what they're any of these offensive linemen, if they have to double down on somebody, they also have to be cognizant of guys on a delayed blitz. And he's been caught a couple times on delayed blitz. If they're not going to count that against him, I don't understand these grades because it all needs to be holistically involved.
Starting point is 00:20:41 You know what I'm saying? He does. When he's man up on a guy, he's extremely solid and he he's very good and he hasn't allowed a sack in that regard but when he gets his back turned away from his gap too often and allows for delayed blitzes to come up the gut too often and you know some of that's on the guard as well but that's also on Ryan Kelly so like I said not knocking him by any means. I just don't feel like these grades really reflect that area or that aspect of it as much as neither do they on the rest of the guys' grades for the other teams. So that doesn't
Starting point is 00:21:17 necessarily knock him down a notch, but maybe it all levels out in the end. I don't know. Darius Butler at this moment is the highest rated Colts corner. I think that we can all agree that that's probably not accurate. Granted, he had a really good game this Sunday. He was in very good coverage a significant amount of times, to be quite honest with you. And actually, the Colts corners in general had a really good game this weekend. But to think that Vontae Davis is all the way down here at 56th at a 72.7 should certainly leave us scratching our heads. Rashawn Melvin's still at 74th at 66.8, and Patrick Robinson just hasn't been consistent enough to be any higher than what he currently is either. So now when we get to our safeties, our safeties have been our strong area.
Starting point is 00:22:08 We talk about this and people, I still to this day see people on Twitter during the games talking about Mike Adams, isn't any good guys. Mike Adams has been one of the better safeties in the league all year. Take your blinders off and pay attention. Watch more football. Watch what he's doing. He's good in coverage. He comes up and he's a 35-year-old man being physical in the gaps, you know, acting as another linebacker sometimes at moments. He's 16th right now at an 81.4, and I think that he
Starting point is 00:22:41 deserves every bit of that. He's been as high as 10th, and he's down to 16th at the moment. But that's also a result of really good safety play from a lot of guys, from a lot of safeties around the league. And then Clayton Gethers is 45th. Man, Clayton, he's played great. I don't care what his great is. He's played really good for the Colts this year so far. I'm really impressed with his ability to grow from last season to this season.
Starting point is 00:23:11 And he's definitely, as long as he can stay healthy, going to be a mainstay in this Colts defense. I'm real excited to see what he can bring to the team over the next several years. Now, linebackers, of course, this is, you know, as we notice this every week, this is the Colts' definite low point, and Josh McNary, who's terrible, somehow leading the pack at 75th at 39.9. DeQuell Jackson's at 82nd, and he's at a 36.8. And, you know, hopefully we're going to see a little more rotation, uh, from those guys. Uh, cause it just, you know, we need more, uh, key mayors. Like I said, he played in, in the middle a couple of times. Uh, Edwin Jackson
Starting point is 00:24:00 played really well. Um, I'd like to see him get some more snaps as well. And I think that he will. Like I said, Antonio Morrison just flat out cannot play in coverage. McNary's been pretty bad. I don't think he notched his tackle at all this past week. At least I didn't see it on the report. So I don't care if people, you know, the guys that I like, I like, and I don't care if people liked Sylvester or not, or thought much of him as much as I did, but he was a good option. The Colts whizzed him away.
Starting point is 00:24:33 He and Edwin Jackson were actually, um, I want to say similar, but both, man, these, both these guys, both those guys could be playing heavy rotational roles in this defense right now, and it'd be better than what it is without them. But Jackson, a good ball player. He's come to play. He plays hard all the time, and I would love to see more of him as well. And I know that a lot of people in Indianapolis would. T.Y. McGill's up to 56.
Starting point is 00:25:01 That's the best interior defensive lineman for the Colts right now at a 54.3. My man with the strip sack on Mariota last week, he was inactive for a handful of games. And I think that was just because Henry Anderson came back. I didn't like it. I still don't like that he was inactive back in those games. But there is very little wiggle room when you get to that point in the roster for game day actives but I think this proves that there are other guys on this team who don't deserve to be on the field or to be active so they need to consider that when they're talking about the best interior pressure that they're getting. They just need to use these guys that are doing their job and making plays. So another guy been making some plays, Hassan Ridgway. He's down there nearing
Starting point is 00:25:53 the hundreds at 43.3. It's not great that he's down there amongst the rest of the league. However, that's number two on the squad. And then the next guy up is Zach Kerr. These guys, for whatever reason, are the guys that are playing the best. Kendall Lankford and David Perry are below that. But if you look at pass rush alone on this, T.Y. McGill's in the top 20 at a 73.4. That's impressive. Henry Anderson actually is above him at a 75.6 in the top 15. Like I said, he hasn't gotten enough snaps, but those two guys right there are definitely making waves, and we need Henry Anderson to be healthy.
Starting point is 00:26:36 Zach Kerr is in the top 30 at 29th in pass rush, so we've definitely got some guys that can do what they're supposed to do. We just have to get supposed to do. We just have to get them to do it more consistently and have, and get the results from it. Now, as we get to the edge, uh, Eric Walden is leading off the Colts at 71st with 48.2 grade. LeVar Edwards at a 45.1 at 80. I'm not sure how that happened. I didn't think that he got many snaps. Robert Mathis is at 96 with a 42.3. And somehow, Keem Ayers, it's simply because he doesn't have enough snaps. But he is at a 73.6 now. If you take the snap issue away and you look at where Keem Ayers is at,
Starting point is 00:27:22 he's up in the top 50. So that should tell you where he's at legitimately. This Colts team has some guys that can really make a difference. They also have some guys that don't deserve to be on the roster. But this is what we talk about and we see every single year. We just have to hope that they can try to do something more consistently and that the Colts defensive coaches can line up what they do best and put the guys on the field who deserve to be there. I would love this weekend to see heavy rotations in the front seven of the Colts' defense
Starting point is 00:27:56 with a lot of these guys who aren't getting enough playing time that deserve it because they're playing better. I'd love to see, you know, I'd kind of like to see the same offensive line start out. And, you know, if Muhor's good to go, he's good to go. You let him play. But, you know, maybe they need, I really don't care. I'm a huge fan of good, but Hague's definitely held his own. Wright's looked good this past week. So, you know, we've talked about this before, especially on Twitter, maybe put Hague at right guard and Good at right tackle. Although Good kind of struggles out there a little bit, at least this year, because he's played so much at guard.
Starting point is 00:28:33 You know, last year he was at tackle only. So he was a little more versed in playing that right tackle spot. So that could have something to do with it. But, uh, I like the way the offensive line is going to come together guys in the next couple of years. I really do. And Andrew Luck has, uh, proven to everybody that a, he's not the problem. And he is most certainly the solution and that he is just an absolute beast out there and that he can, he is so pinpoint accurate this year, guys,
Starting point is 00:29:04 that touchdown to TY was, I mean, you couldn't have walked it to, uh, to Hilton and put it in his hands any better. You know, uh, a lot of these passes that pass that we, you know, considered one way or another to be a drop by Doyle in the end zone, that thing was thrown so hard, but it was pinpoint. He could not have thrown it in a better spot. Any less and that's picked possibly or you know it was just so many of his passes this year are phenomenal and I just I continue to be excited to watch more Andrew Luck every single week and see what he's going to do because I know he can lead this Colts team back to a 10-win season. But man, that's going to be tough sledding right now. So the
Starting point is 00:29:47 Colts are 3-4. They can get to 500 at 4-4 this week at home. As I've mentioned before, and I've already had some of you, like several of you actually, which kind of surprised me, a couple of you on Twitter and a few people on email have reached out to me and said that you guys are going to go to the game too this weekend. We will be there. I believe it's up in the Bud Light Zone there right behind the 100 seats as you walk in under the window. So don't be afraid to reach out or shout and say hey because we will certainly be there. It should be a good game this week, guys.
Starting point is 00:30:22 I'm looking forward to it. I'll have the guys in here from Locked On Chiefs at some point this week, and we'll talk a little bit more about the game. I'll be on their podcast here this week too, so be on the lookout for that. That could be interesting either way. And I'll be plugging all of it, but thank you all. Make sure you guys are following or liking both of those and you guys can get just about anything that we have out. I've also got some articles you know that
Starting point is 00:31:03 go up there from today's pigskin. all the Colts stuff goes through that. And all the Colts stuff also goes for, comes from colts.com just about anything. So anything Colts related is going to be on those feeds, but more importantly, I appreciate you guys listening. Yesterday's numbers were amazing. I truly appreciate it. You guys, this audience is truly growing like super, super fast right now. And that's all because of you guys. And, uh, Paulo did get ahold of me today. He did win the Jersey and I'm going to be sending that to him. We're going to send that out to his home in Connecticut, where he is going to be representing Colts blue in the middle of new England Patriots territory. So even if you didn't
Starting point is 00:31:45 win the jersey, you guys should be happy that we are going to have one more Colts jersey in the east on the eastern seaboard. And that is a good thing. And thank you again for everybody who emailed in for that. We had a ton of people do that was really cool. I hope to be able to get more do more giveaways like that in the future. So your listenership and the way you guys plug this show and how you guys rate and review it on iTunes and all that stuff will definitely allow me to be able to do more of that. So please continue to do that. Thank you again for listening,
