Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, where are you going, Jim? The elevator's over here. Taking the stairs. But our meeting's up on 8. Yeah, I know. But that's 8 floors up. That's like 8 times... I don't... a lot of stairs. That's the point. I've already lost a few pounds and earned almost $100 in wellness incentives. Whoa, you're getting rewarded for working out? Yeah, I know. I'm just as surprised as you are, Bob.

Starting point is 00:01:19 On Podcast Network, your team every day. Welcome back to Locked On Colts. I'm your host, Matt Dainley, and we are not sitting here at two and two after Colts' trip to London. We are now sitting at one and three after an extremely disappointing loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. We've got a lot to talk about. We've got a lot to complain about, We've got a lot to complain about,
Starting point is 00:01:45 but I've also got a couple things that probably I think some people need to set straight on just a little bit. Nothing major, but you know, this is so disappointing. The Colts have every chance in the world right here to come out of really a good portion of four games playing like crap and at least having a respectable record. There's every chance in the world that the Colts come out of these first four games, three and one are at a minimum, two and two, and they just didn't do it. They didn't finish. And more importantly, they didn't start, which is the real problem. I mean, the Colts just aren't coming out of the locker room with any kind of gusto whatsoever. And we are seeing the same things over and over and over again in the first half with the coaching staff, with the players, with just about everything. I mean, it seems like about every aspect of the game, there's always some sort of an issue that is not getting corrected between weeks.
Starting point is 00:02:48 So with that, thank you to the listeners for all of your attention and getting, you know, corresponding more on Facebook, having the conversation with me on Twitter and so on. You guys do me a favor and get to iTunes and rate and review the show. I'd really appreciate it. The listenership has been fantastic. It's doing nothing but going up. And I really appreciate all of you taking part in this as much as you are. So let's get into it here. We got a few major things to talk about. First and foremost, I'm going to, I mean, just kind of run us through some of the major parts of the game, and then we'll get into some more general conversations about players and stuff
Starting point is 00:03:39 in general after that. You know, the Colts in their first possession get a drop from Ferguson out of the backfield on a third down. Colts end up forcing the Jaguars into a punt on their first drive. The second Colts drive, luck to Allen. Allen drops it on a first down play. You know, then on the following play, the pass is tipped at the line and intercepted. That gives the Jaguars short field position, and then the Jaguars end up scoring on a touchdown pass from Bortles to Robinson with just over eight minutes to go in the first quarter. Colts get a nice return out of Bray. Several plays into the drive, Luck throws an incompletion to Gore, another drop. Luck gets sacked, goes right up Muhor's alley.
Starting point is 00:04:29 Gore misses the same guy in protection. Then there's another drop by Rodgers. The ball was a little behind him. Wasn't a perfect pass or anything like that, but it was still catchable, so I'm still going to call it a drop. But it was also not a great throw. The Colts end up getting a field goal out of that. On their next possession, they end up getting abused on the line by Ngakwe. He sacks luck again.
Starting point is 00:04:54 Then Dorsett drops a ball later in the possession. The Colts again settle for a field goal. Then the Jaguars, on their following possession, actually get their first real touchdown drive, kind of march down the field. There's a bad pass interference call on Patrick Robinson in the end zone. Then Bortles ends up running it in for a yard and Jaguars are up 14-6. Then the next Jags possession after the Colts kind of have to punt after just a few plays, we end up getting stupid in a heartbeat. Green pushes Sterling out of bounds late, gets the flag. There's extra yards.
Starting point is 00:05:33 Then a couple plays later, Camardi gets called for a pass interference. There's another big yardage gain. Then a few plays after that, Camardi gets called again, this time for defensive holding. Now it's first and goal. Colts giving up a lot of stupid penalties, Camardi gets called again, this time for defensive holding. Now it's first in goal. Colts giving up a lot of stupid penalties, being stupid after the whistle. This isn't good. Right before halftime, Colts are in an 11-point deficit going in. At the end of the first half,
Starting point is 00:05:57 neither Luck or Bortles were really all that impressive, although Bortles had 36 yards on the ground from scrambling. That tells you that the Colts were doing fairly decent in coverage for the most part, that he had to pull it down seven times. But he ended up getting a touchdown on that one-yard run. Luck ended up dealing with four drops in the first half, and Hilton had the most catches out of anybody with three. Luck was only 8 of 16. Now the second half, the Colts were better on third down,
Starting point is 00:06:24 and the Colts' defense was better at keeping the Jags from converting third downs. The Jags were two of eight. The Colts were four of six. It just doesn't sound right though because the second half was just another fecal feature all the way through again. I mean, it's just pathetic thinking about it all over again. The Jags go down, kick a field goal on their first possession in the second half. Colts end up having to punt on another sack where it was the one where Luck's knee actually went down. It wasn't looking like it did initially through that ball to Doyle. Doyle had a huge gain, but that came back. Colts had to punt it away.
Starting point is 00:07:02 Then on that next possession, the Colts get stupid again. Majic gets called for unnecessary roughness on a late hit. And there was like three Colts, to punt it away. Then on that next possession, the Colts get stupid again. Majic gets called for unnecessary roughness on a late hit. And there was like three Colts, to be fair, that hit him after he was already on the ground. But all of them get up with their hands up, acting like they don't know what they did. That's just stupidity. And you know what the thing that really ticks me off the most about it is that Pagano sits there and just, oh, it's okay, guys. That's a bad call. It wasn't a bad call. It was stupid. You're jumping on the quarterback after he's already on the ground. There was no loose ball until all three of them hit him while he was on the ground.
Starting point is 00:07:31 More stupid plays, more free yards. Colts, again, showing that they have no discipline in certain areas of the game. This has to stop. This has to turn around. Something's got to happen. Whether it's them getting their head out of their butt or the coach actually putting his foot in their butt, something. Something's got to happen.
Starting point is 00:07:52 Then Colts end up stopping later on the Jaguars on third down, but on fourth down they convert. Bortles throws to Yeldon. He gets through two tacklers. Big surprise for like I think it was a fourth down and like three maybe, but he ended up getting four or five yards out of it. They only get a field goal out of that, so that's good. But then, hey, guess what? 251 to go in the third quarter. The Colts all of a sudden go to hurry up offense. Only took them 43 minutes in the game to go to their strong point on offense.
Starting point is 00:08:20 Good timing. So now with the Colts down 17 points, they go to their strong point. Now it's time to play football, right? Good job. A couple of nice plays in this one, especially that diving catch from Rodgers on this one. Ferguson, again, big surprise, dropped for a loss. Colts end up getting a gift pass interference on Ciprian, and Gore ends up running it in from two yards out to make it a 10-point game. Now, in the next possession, the Colts looked pretty good throughout the majority of it,
Starting point is 00:08:52 although Vontae Davis got away with a pass interference. Look, there's no reason he should have gotten away with that pass interference, let's be honest. He had his back to the ball, the receiver was coming back to the ball, Had to go through Davis to get to it. Davis hit him. The receiver couldn't get back to the ball. That's pass interference, and it was exactly the same thing. The pass to Bray was underthrown. House had his back to the ball. Bray started to come back to the ball, ran into House. Bray couldn't get back to the ball. Pass interference. Exact same call.
Starting point is 00:09:36 Colts got away with one on the previous possession there. And then Luck ended up hitting T.Y. later on for that touchdown. And that cut it to three. It looked like things were getting ready to turn around. Following possession, Bortles hits Hearns on the little about five-yard out, and Rashawn Melvin comes up totally just zipping through there. No way he's going to be able to make any sort of a decent tackle, flying across the field flat with no angle, misses the tackle.
Starting point is 00:10:11 Hearns then makes his way through the trash and gets like probably 35 out of the 42 yards after the catch and gets in for a touchdown. That was kind of a backbreaker right there, I felt like. It was like, we get so close, and then this happens, and Colts,ts again in a 10-point deficit. But on the following possession, Luck hit Dorsett for a huge touchdown. Ramsey was looking in the backfield. To be honest here, they made a big to-do about this pass that, you know, oh, he gave up on it. Look, that was going to be completed anyways. Dorsett had two steps on him. I don't know that it would have gone for a touchdown, but it was a big play regardless. So neither here nor there, but, you know,
Starting point is 00:10:53 a lot of luck, again, was sacked on that drive right before that pass. That was more of a coverage sack. In fact, there were several that were like that. You know, the O-line isn't doing real well, guys, but for three rookies on the whole right side of the line starting, I didn't think they did terrible. A lot of them, to be honest with you, Costanzo and Muhort today got abused. I mean, there wasn't a lot of great stuff coming from the rookies.
Starting point is 00:11:17 But the two guys who are supposed to be anchoring that offensive line just got destroyed today by the Jacksonville defensive line and their linebackers. It was ugly. So game's wearing down. Colts end up forcing a three and out on the Jaguars. Still 30-27. Colts have another chance here to take the lead fourth quarter comeback style, you know, like Luck's rookie year and second year. A couple tiny little throws to Ferguson that mean absolutely nothing. Luck gets nine on a pass to Hilton. Then on fourth and one, Luck and Pagano, and let me preface this real quick before we get to it.
Starting point is 00:12:01 Pagano even stated that Luck has the option here to run this a pass or have this a run play. Now, he chose to take it out of the shotgun. It was a bad package, though, to take it out of. Gore's not on the field. Luck could have probably pulled the ball down and run. Both valid comments, but here's the thing quit complaining about it being a run play that it should have been a run play if they would have run the ball and didn't get it every single person would have been pissing and moaning saying that it should have been a pass play that everybody knows it's going to be a run on fourth and one that's right they do that's why he ran the pass play it It was a good play.
Starting point is 00:12:45 It was a crappy route from Allen. He didn't catch the ball. It was probably a bad decision on Luck's part to throw the ball. He probably should have just tucked it and fought out for the yard. But Allen on that play starts out about three yards past the distance to go and keeps fading backwards. He's got to come back to that ball. That's a fourth down attempt. He's got to come back to the ball, secure it. He was six yards past the first down
Starting point is 00:13:12 marker when he made contact with the ball. There's no reason that he should be that deep on a ball. When the ball is coming to him, he should come back to the ball, make the catch, secure it, forget the extra one yard or whatever, two yards he's going to get out of it. That was just, in general, a bad set of events. Now that we've gone through a bit of a recap of that disgusting game, let's get to some of the more pressing issues. But first, be sure to be checking out all the Locked On Network podcasts. The NFL Draft, the NFL Fantasy, and Locked On NFL are all great shows. The entire Locked On lineup is fantastic.
Starting point is 00:13:57 A lot of great stuff this past week especially, and there's going to be more coming up with the games that there are this week. So make sure you're getting a hold of those. Subscribe to your favorite shows and get everything you need for your drive to work or drive home from work, your lunch hour, or whenever you listen to your shows. These are great shows to pass a few minutes. Now, the Colts have zero pass rush. I don't expect this to be a surprise to any of you, but Eric Walden, the one guy that the Colts have brought in, whether it was via draft or free agency signing, Eric Walden is the one guy who was not supposed to be brought in for pass rush help. And guess what? He is the only Colts
Starting point is 00:14:40 pass rush that we've got right now. and that's pathetic. We got Henry Anderson, who can get a little bit of pressure through the interior offensive line. David Perry gets some good push sometimes. They've had T.Y. McGill inactive the past two weeks. I mean, I understand there's only so many guys you can have activated, but he doesn't have the stats, but that guy is a disruptor in the interior, and he needs to be active as far as I can tell. But Robert Mathis is non-existent. He has maybe two quarterback hits, I think, throughout the first four games. He's now got four tackles in four games total, zero sacks, and he is, in fact, in the Denver game. He didn't even make it on the stat
Starting point is 00:15:26 sheet at all. He is absolutely of no use at the moment on the Colts defense. It's really bad. He's getting dominated on the line. I mean, he looks like a rookie. He's getting dominated. I get it. He's old. But here's the problem. This is another thing. This has been an issue. Not just that he is as old as he is and he's not playing well. That's just one small piece of it. The Colts have had how many years now to draft a premier pass rusher or to least attempt to?
Starting point is 00:16:02 Okay. So they draft Bjorn Werner. Everybody knows he's a classic bust, swing and a miss. Then they draft Newsom in the fourth, what, fourth or fifth round. He way outplayed his draft stock. Okay. First and foremost, nobody who watched his tape pre-draft expected him to do anything like he did. Seven and a half sacks, not a monster, a season or nothing, nothing that's like rookie of the year to do anything like he did seven and a half sacks not a monstrous season or nothing nothing that's like rookie of the year worthy or anything like that but nobody expected him to be that involved and be that sort of a playmaker obviously he got all of his NFL sacks
Starting point is 00:16:37 out of the way in that one year and now he's gone because he's a knucklehead, and he wasn't any good after that. Then the Colts draft Trevor Bates this year. He's on the practice squad. Those are the three pass rushers that the Colts have drafted since 2012. That's it because they're all waiting for Robert Mathis to have 20 sacks every single year, and it just doesn't happen. They bring in Trent Cole this past year, too, or last year, and expect him to be a heavy contributor. I've got to admit, when they brought him in, I thought, eh, he's old, but the guy knows how to rush the passer.
Starting point is 00:17:19 He's got a ton of sacks throughout his career. He's going to at least be able to do something. No go. He's not been very good either. I mean, you can say he's the top pass rusher on the Colts PFF grades, that means absolutely nothing. Okay. In the long run, that means zilch. The Colts pass rush sucks and they need to do something to rectify it, whether that's bringing Trevor Bates up and kicking somebody down or whatever they've got to do. Something needs to get done.
Starting point is 00:17:51 They've got to figure out a better scheme. They've got to make some better calls. They've got to have better blitzes. They've got to have better stunts. They've got to have better, you know, whether they're going to two-gap or they can run in the one-gap. They've got to do something to where they can switch things up because right now they look like crap. There is no pass rush, no quarterback
Starting point is 00:18:08 fears Indianapolis's defense. Outside of Eric Walden, the only other guy to get consistent hits when he is rushing is Mike Adams of safety. That's twice because he's rushed twice, maybe four times throughout the season. And he's getting in the backfield every time. That's our pass rush. I mean, it makes my head hurt. I know it makes yours hurt too. Kind of a spinoff of this is you can tell I'm not cracked up about the Colts, about the Colts loss and just kind of get some frustrations out. I got a mouth. I got a microphone. You've got the ears. Thank you for joining me. But this is what today's going to be. You know, Ferguson, can somebody get him off the roster? Great. He's fast. I appreciate that. That's fantastic scouting. He's fast. He can't run in between the tackles and he you know I saw something today
Starting point is 00:19:05 on Twitter early in the game and I thought somebody was like well he is the Colts second leading receiver all of his catches are in junk time they're nothing they're a little out of the backfield stuff when the Colts are usually down trying to get up and just kind of move stretch or squeak the ball a little bit closer each time. And that's all he's getting. He's not breaking anything. He's had plenty of opportunities to break something, and he's not breaking anything. And he's dropping the ball a lot.
Starting point is 00:19:34 Get him off the roster. There's nothing that Jordan Todman can't do. Okay? We got Turbin, Gore, Todman. All three of those can handle that. I'm sure of it. Get him off the roster. We need stuff elsewhere. He's fast. He's going five yards fast. Awesome. Get him off the roster.
Starting point is 00:20:00 I'm sick of it. Already discussed the pass rush, the drops. Antonio Cromartie looks like he's 40 now. I was impressed with him the first few games. I think that's about all he had in his tank, to be quite honest with you. I think Cromartie's done. Getting was impressed with him the first few games. I think that's about all he had in his tank, to be quite honest with you. I think Cromartie's done. Getting just scooped on the line. He's holding. He's a lot of penalties. He doesn't have it. He's done.
Starting point is 00:20:18 Move Patrick Robinson out there and find another slot guy because Cromartie's not going to be able to handle, uh, the outside corner position. It's just not, uh, not going to happen, uh, get him healthy, uh, maybe, or, you know, have him have the two flip flop every so often or something, but he's not cutting it out there on every snap. It's just not going to happen. Uh, play calling. I kind of wanted to touch on that a little bit. The play calling has been pretty good, okay, in the first four games. There's been some really piss-poor execution in certain spots. Like I said, a lot of drops. There's been, you know, when there are, even today,
Starting point is 00:20:57 Luck was throwing to Hilton, and he had, I can't remember if it was Rogers or Bray, had him deep, wide open touchdown. Luck didn't even see him. Luck instead threw two T.Y. into double coverage. I understand to a point because at the moment, at that moment, T.Y. was the only one who could catch the dang ball. So I get it, but it's just another thing that kind of gets into it, you know, and that was on a third down play. So these are all things that are kind of just getting pushed into the entire pile of crappy play, especially from today, but not exclusively. And the Colts have, you know, they are really walking the tightrope of being out of it altogether, to be honest with you.
Starting point is 00:21:46 They're in the AFC South, and I hate this when I hear people say the AFC South sucks and you're never out of the division and it's this or it's that. But the Colts still have a chance because they're in the AFC South. It is true that the Titans and the Jaguars aren't running away with anything. The Colts, A, shouldn't have gotten beaten by the Jaguars. The Texans are very beatable as well. But you know what?
Starting point is 00:22:15 The Colts are a couple losses here from their season being completely going down the drain. They're not far off. There's a lot that needs changed, a lot that needs changed now. Pagano, I don't know what's up with this dude, and I'm not a fire Pagano guy, fire Grigson guy. I'm just not, but this guy has the same stinking excuses every single game. Oh, we played well. Credit Jacksonville. Credit them. Credit they did good. No, they didn't. You guys sucked, and you need to do something about it. Be the dad instead of the buddy. Don't be the father figure. Be the angry stepdad right now
Starting point is 00:23:00 because things need to change, and you're the guy that needs to put your foot down and make it happen or you're useless to this team. There's no reason for it. Things are going to happen. You're going to have crappy games during a season where it looks like none of you came and even wanted to play, but it shouldn't be happening 50% of the time. It just shouldn't. Now the offensive line, like we said, three rookies on one side, two of the veterans on the other. You know, it looked bad, but to be quite fair, that front seven of Jacksonville does have a lot of talent, a ton of it. I didn't expect it to be easy. I wasn't worried about the O-line today going in. I'm probably still not because I think Blythe just hasn't gotten a lot of snaps.
Starting point is 00:23:47 So you can look at it a couple different ways. I don't think Blythe and Haig played particularly well today, but I don't think they played bad. But you had Costanzo getting just eaten alive on one end, and then Muhor was going back and forth. I think Kelly got nicked up a little bit during the game. So, you know, I don't really even know what to think about the O-line. I like the O-line. I just don't like the way they play today at all. They get through a lot. There was a lot of plays
Starting point is 00:24:16 where the coverage was either good or luck didn't make the quick decision to get the ball out right away and the pressure got to him because of the coverage or just something. There was a lot of factors, but in the end, I think the O-line's pretty good. They're definitely going to be good in the future. I think this is a very good group, so to speak, that's going to be putting it together in the near future. But, you know, they're going to have some growing pains right now. That honestly, the offensive line is one of the least of my worries. Didn't really notice a whole lot of it from the linebackers today. I think that's probably a good thing. I'll go back and watch, you know, the tape here in the next day or so and kind of maybe
Starting point is 00:25:01 pass that along to see if there's anything, you know, come across a second viewing and see like what I thought of it. But I mean, it was just ugly from the jump. I mean, drops on the first few possessions, especially on key plays. I just, you know, I just can't get it out of my head that the Colts had to settle for field goals, field goals, field goals. You know, I mean, just it's too often that it's happening. And the Colts aren't going to win anything if they keep playing like this. This is something that has to change. The Colts do have Chicago coming to town next week. And I'll say this.
Starting point is 00:25:42 Now, I don't know. You know, I can't necessarily. I haven't researched this or anything before. I'm opening my mouth, but this is just the feeling I've gotten from the past years under Pagano. The Colts haven't played well when they don't play at 1 o'clock, whether it's the 425 game, primetime, on Sunday night. Thursday, I think they have a pretty good record,
Starting point is 00:26:03 but it's almost always an AFC South matchup, so that's probably why. But in general, the Colts, and then coming today, playing at 9 o'clock their time with such a weird schedule over in London, maybe that's got a little bit to do with it, but by and large,
Starting point is 00:26:18 I think it's all a lack of execution. It's a lack of something with the coaching. I wish I could pinpoint it. I just, I just, I can't. I just, it's really aggravating. I know it is to you guys too. So we'll see what happens, but I think that the Colts have one of the most favorable games next week against the Bears. Probably going to be facing Brian Hoyer, although he's torched us in the past too, so what do you know? You never know what's going to happen. Oh, and I did also want to apologize. Had a little trouble with some hard drive issues over the weekend, so I wasn't able to put the Gary Myers interviews up. I'm going to put those up as bonus footage this week. Uh, my apologies
Starting point is 00:27:05 for that. Not something I could help. So, uh, I will get those up. I've got them edited and whatnot, but I'll, I'll put them up throughout the week and, uh, give those to you guys as extra, uh, posts. I'll have the regular five posts this week. Uh, and, uh, I'll add those to it as well, just for kind of bonus content. So, um, you're getting on to Locked On Colts on Twitter, at Locked On Colts, the Locked On Colts Facebook page. And if you are wanting to advertise on the show or you're wanting to sponsor the show, hit me up at LockedOnColtsPod at gmail.com. We will be having some information on that probably next week.
Starting point is 00:27:47 I believe we're going to have a new sponsor next week, so that's good news. Other than that, I don't know what to tell you, Colts fans. I tell you to chop wood and find some iron to sharpen your iron and all that other stuff, but I'm pretty sure we're going to hear that in the next few days anyways from Pagano, but try to stay positive, uh, and, uh, try not to throw in the towel so quickly, but, uh, you know, things need to change, whether it's from the top down or within, you know, the team, I had a question about, um, whether any trades that I saw coming, you know, it's such a weird, uh, kind of year for, for that. Some, some of the saw coming? You know, it's such a weird kind of year for that. Some of the guys that, you know, typical trades, not typical,
Starting point is 00:28:30 but a lot of trades come up with when guys are in the final year of their contract or something like that. Those that aren't actually in the conference this year, guys like that, have either been already traded this year or are, or just not, they're, they're just in the conference already, you know, just, it's just weird. And then there's just not a lot of impact guys that would be worth a trade, uh, whether it was for draft picks or otherwise. I mean, so this, I don't see that necessarily happening. And the sad part about it is I don't really see any playmakers coming in off the street. I think that one of the answers
Starting point is 00:29:12 is you've got to see what Trevor Bates can do in an NFL game and you get him in there. We've seen what Josh Ferguson can do. It ain't much. Get him out. Okay. Get the guys in there that are showing you that they are worthy of being in the game and play them. Mathis needs to get his head out. Needs to start taking it seriously. Isn't, you know, isn't capable anymore. I don't know what it is, but the Colts can't wait for him to get his stuff together. He's got to get together now because without him, it's Eric Walden for our pass rush. So if you're comfortable with that, congratulations. I'm not.
Starting point is 00:29:52 Somebody needs to do something or this team's going to end up being less than 500 on the year. And they might even be a six win team regardless. Just depends. So with that, that's our Angry Monday show. Thank you guys, like I said, for sharing the show, for conversing with me, whether it was on Facebook or Twitter or email or otherwise. You guys are great.
Starting point is 00:30:16 Please keep it up. Please go give us a rating if you haven't already. And we'll talk to you tomorrow on the Tuesday edition. You are Locked on Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast, part of the locked on podcast network, your team every day.
