Starting point is 00:00:00 That's for my crazy day. My packed commute. All those unread emails in my inbox. But I'm getting stronger, faster, and pushing myself further every day. I don't care if I'm not like everyone else. This punching bag is the best way to end my day. Fearless is knowing yoga isn't your style. Starting point is 00:00:25 Learn more about our healthy benefits at fepblue.org slash getmore. No, I'm not for sale. You are lockeded On Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast. Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. Welcome back to Locked On Colts, ladies and gentlemen. I'm your host, Matt Dainley. Thank you for joining me back on this Tuesday on Locked On Colts, ladies and gentlemen. I'm your host, Matt Dainley. Thank you for joining me back on this Tuesday on Locked On Colts. I appreciate you guys coming in each and every day.
Starting point is 00:01:15 The only place where you guys can get expert advice on the Indianapolis Colts every single day, right here on Locked On Colts. And today's going to be a little bit softer. I know that yesterday and most Mondays after a loss and after looking that bad in so many different areas, we concentrate on the negative and rightly so. But I touched on a couple things yesterday, and I'll touch on them again today. There were some good things with the Colts team yesterday. However, we're obviously not blind, so it's kind of like I'm force-feeding myself not to consider how bad they were in so many different areas, but there were a couple areas
Starting point is 00:01:50 that were of improvement, and it was nice to see, notably the run defense. The Colts on the end gave up 88 yards of rushing yesterday between Spencer Ware, Sharkandrick West, you know, Alex Smith for the time that he was in there. And he kind of, you know, is known to scramble quite a bit and get outside the pocket a little bit. So 88 yards on that is overall is pretty good. And I think that a lot of that is due to not necessarily as a direct result of the guys that came in and subbed in.
Starting point is 00:02:25 But I think that they certainly proved that they're every bit as capable of stopping the run and actually did a good job because some of the guys in there that, for example, Akeem Ayers, Edwin Jackson, some of those role player guys that we talk about that are just going to get those new, getting those snaps now, uh, should be that they can play both in both in coverage and against the run. And I think that's difficult for teams to, you know, that's the whole point in the defense. You need guys on the field who can do both, cover guys and stop the run. That way you are defending the entire offense as opposed to just half of it.
Starting point is 00:03:14 Otherwise, as teams do, they just continue to focus on everything else. Whereas a lot of the success through the air from Foles wasn't necessarily in a short to intermediate game. You know, his pass to Tyreek Hill I believe it was him that threw that uh for the touchdown that was just terrible coverage by Adams or a combination of him in the corner I'm not exactly sure although both corners were running the under uh coverage so you have to assume that they expected to have help on both sides from those safeties. So the other touchdown, you know, one of the play where Jeremy Macklin was open in the back of the end zone and tried to catch it with one hand, he was open through our safeties.
Starting point is 00:03:55 He didn't miss it, but the very next play he went to Farley and they had Farley matched up with him on the outside, which just is a pathetic mismatch, and basically just let him run to the corner of the end zone, and he hit him in stride with no problems too. A lot of their success was deep and then early in the game with Travis Kelsey, so that was obvious that a lot of those things were going to happen regardless. But, and the Colts have terrible secondary coverage this year, or at least they're giving
Starting point is 00:04:31 up a crap ton of passing yards this year. So the pass defense is one of the bigger issues. And like I said, though, beginning of the game, though, at least on the outside, from 10 to 15 yards, you know, not so much across the middle of the field. But the coverage was pretty good. There were some batted balls, both by Vontae and Patrick Robinson. There was a couple tip balls with the underneath coverages that were in good coverage. It almost was picked off by Adams. I think there was at least two of them that bounced up and nearly were tipped into his hands.
Starting point is 00:05:09 So there were some opportunities there that were missed, and it started because the run defense was pretty good. However, as the game wore on, naturally they became a little more successful, and being how poorly, how much lack of success there was from the Colts offense that that trickled down as well and turnovers certainly didn't hurt or certainly didn't help I thought another area of success at points in the game and kind of throughout you kind of noticed that they would look to be sending some odd guys on blitzes. They sent Patrick Robinson a couple times. Edwin Jackson was called upon late on the outside to blitz through. The Colts had some success getting to their quarterbacks. Obviously, Alex Smith got dinged up a couple times, but
Starting point is 00:05:59 right when Nick Foles came in, he got leveled once by Mathis and I think another time by TJ Green. I'm not exactly sure if that was him or not, but they were definitely getting to him, which was nice to see. They had three sacks. I think they had about seven quarterback hits or eight. And, you know, they did their job for sure in that regard, which was nice to see. So being that they were so successful in the pass, you have the good against the run, fairly decent pass rush for this game, yet you still have the 400-plus yards and however many yards specifically through the air, which was kind of a strange combination, I thought. But the pass rush was there. It was nice. Mathis ended up getting through on the edge a couple
Starting point is 00:06:50 different times. Like I said, he had a sack and he got a really hard QB hit on a release from Foles. And there were some issues for the Chiefs to, you know, got a couple of lucky bounces as well. Like I mentioned that pass down the middle where Green was in coverage and he took his eyes off the ball. If he just kept his eyes on the ball, he was in perfect position to make that interception, but naturally he did not. So that's an issue. And this will kind of round it out just because there really wasn't that much good for this game. But penalties, the Colts, however, despite the penalties that they did have being extremely costly, the Colts only had five penalties this game.
Starting point is 00:07:34 That's a huge turnaround from where they've been at. They've been very lax in their preparation almost. You just see it just blows your mind kind of how they can constantly have five-yard penalties here, five-yard penalties there, just one after another, sometimes multiple in the same series, and it's just mind-bending how they cannot be focused enough to do that. They were pretty focused in this regard, but a lot of those, their five penalties really were crucial. And them losing this game, I thought, not necessarily dependent upon it. But, man, they came at the worst possible times.
Starting point is 00:08:11 So they did clean that up a little bit, but they were bad. You know, the penalties that they did have were bad. So there really isn't much more good in this game. It's really kind of, you know, there was several, several gifts that I put up on Twitter that you can see the one where I kind of, I kind of blame Kelly for the miss, miss block, but you see Denzel good. Not only is Denzel good, not doing what he's supposed to do in that short little snippet, he actually think it looks as though he thinks it's a run block and it's, it's clearly a pass protection.
Starting point is 00:08:45 So that, among other things, was pretty damning and pretty strange and straightforward. It would be nice to get Muhort back there and try to get them to concentrate on that. A couple of things of note, Monte Davis and Joe Reitz both were in concussion protocol. That's not good. You don't want to see that there was a lot of concussions uh in this game you know spencer weir went out i know there was a lineman for the chiefs went out with one as well and then obviously alex smith now i saw something today that said that they didn't think the chiefs didn't think that alex smith was concussed in the game let
Starting point is 00:09:22 me tell you what anytime you get up from getting just drilled like Edwin Jackson, put the stick to him and you get up and you can't stand up, I have no idea what you could possibly assume the issue was. You know, he got up, he was woozy, obviously couldn't get up. And then here's the other part of that. As he leaves the game, he comes back. They bring him back in the game after apparently going through the concussion protocol and then on another you know later in the game on another opportunity where he's trying to run just pick up a couple yards he tries to get down again he kind of gets down late but it's a totally innocuous tackle as it comes in he kind of just puts his hand down to make sure he gets a hand on Smith
Starting point is 00:10:05 as he's down on the ground you know you can see Smith's head just does kind of hit the ground again but it's more of I mean there's no real impact I guess I should say you see him kind of go down and kind of slide his head just kind of happens to hit the ground he stays down on that I mean that's look that's the dangerous part, and I think that's why nobody believes in the concussion protocol to begin with. I just think it's a joke, and the fact that they brought him back and that he could get almost completely knocked out cold on that kind of a play proves to you that he had a concussion on the first one and they didn't do they just should have kept him out of the game plain and simple first of all Foles was doing fine
Starting point is 00:10:50 and you know second of all there's no reason for them to bring back a guy like that and really risk his health I just I don't understand they know too much about it now you know and for them to bring him back on that I thought thought that was ridiculous. I thought that was extremely poor judgment. And I think, you know, I actually sent out a tweet about this with a quick video on it. And I thought somebody needs to have a talk with that doctor. If this play sets him out and knocks him out cold, we have to have a talk about what kind of steps were taken during his protocol for you to clear him
Starting point is 00:11:25 and allow him to come back in the game. So I'd be having a talk with my team doctor, and he'd probably get the boot, to be quite honest with you. So enough about that. This is about the Colts. But I still think that's an issue. I still think that's a major issue. And actually, I remember being surprised that I saw him walking back in the game. It just struck me as very odd. I was very confused at that time because he looked
Starting point is 00:11:51 so out of it when he did go down the first time. And speaking of the tickets that I had the other day, guys, you got to check out SeatGeek. And my son and I went, like I spoke to you about, I have SeatGeek on my phone. I actually used our promo code for this, and you get this $20 rebate from them. It's a win-win as far as I'm concerned. I mean, SeatGeek is the smartest, easiest way to find tickets for football games you want to see up close in person this season. There's nothing like being in the stadium for the biggest plays of the year. There wasn't many of those on Sunday. However, with SeatGeek, it's never been easier to get the guaranteed seats you want for a great value. Now, the one
Starting point is 00:12:29 thing I did like about it the most is that you can see both your ticket price and the total taxes and all that other stuff that's added into it right there. There was no mystery stuff on my bill or anything like that. It was really nice. I mean, that really does matter. It's kind of annoying to have to deal with that crap when you don't know that it's coming. Like I said, I've got the SeatGeek app on my phone. It is extremely easy. I found a super simple way to shop for tickets. I can be anywhere with just a few taps. I can instantly find seats for my game or my concert or wherever I'm going. I'm not much of a concert goer lately, but I'm going to the game. With SeatGeek, you always get the best deal on every ticket because SeatGeek price compares for you by searching multiple ticket sites.
Starting point is 00:13:15 Prices can vary depending on where you shop, but SeatGeek will always find you the lowest possible price. SeatGeek wants to help you get the most bang for your buck. That's why every ticket on SeatGeek is given a grade based on value. You'll immediately see any underpriced seats and be able to find the best deals that fit your budget. Plus, every ticket you buy on SeatGeek is back to 100% guaranteed. So you can shop for tickets on SeatGeek with confidence and not have to mess with it. It was extremely easy.
Starting point is 00:13:43 In fact, I had my tickets the very next day, which I was surprised about, which was awesome. Uh, best of all you guys, uh, my listeners get a $20 rebate off their first seat geek purchase to get your $20 rebate on tickets. Here's what you do. Download the seat geek app, go to the settings tab and click add a promo code. Do this first before you start shopping for tickets or you won't have the option. So go to Settings tab, click Add the Promo Code, enter promo code LOCOLTS. SeatGeek will send you $20 after you've made your first ticket purchase. Download the SeatGeek app and enter LOCOLTS today. It really is super simple, and I suggest you guys do it for whatever tickets you're looking for. I'll be using it again.
Starting point is 00:14:22 I used it for this past weekend, like I said, for the Colts game. Saved me a little bit of money, you know, on tickets, and they weren't cheap, so nice to get that $20 rebate. I can definitely take that, boom, right back in my pocket. I can dig it. So obviously we know that there were a lot of bad things, and there were some other bad stuff that came today. Pagano seems to be cognizant of how bad the game was. However, his typical self about this team is a team that can do it. I think that he's a little confused about how bad of a coaching job he's been doing, though. I don't really necessarily want to get into that again today. We can do that virtually four out of every single week,
Starting point is 00:15:03 four days out of every single week we can have something like that but you know DeQuell Jackson uh made the comment uh something to the effect that we're three and five you know nobody wants to lose at home but we could be you know at least we're not eight no or we could be eight no or oh and eight I mean and I thought well that's you know an odd sense of uh uh Mr. Cup half full. But then, yeah, you could be 0-8. I think that it was maybe a shot at not necessarily this Browns group of players, but they're the only 0-8 team. And the Colts are pretty damn close to being 0-8 themselves.
Starting point is 00:15:42 Like I've told you guys in the past, they could have been undefeated at one time if they had just had their stuff together, both in the coaching staff and in personnel, and played like they wanted to win and made some plays in critical junctures of games. But that just means that they're just that much closer to 0-8 as well. So, I mean, or, you know, undefeated and winless, you know, they're both, they were equally close to that. Now they're quite a bit further away from undefeated than they are winless. This is a scary setup for the Colts. They're, like I told you guys yesterday, this season is ultimately over. The good thing about it, if you guys saw last night, the Vikings apparently
Starting point is 00:16:30 are not the same team they were in the first five, six games of the season. The Colts do play them the second half of the season. The Raiders' defense is suspect. Ultimately, I think this season's probably still over. I still think that both of those teams are better than the Colts right now. Neither one of those teams have Andrew Luck, though. Man, he could pull out a couple wins. You just never know. But on the other hand, it's hard to tell right now which way a lot of things will go. So I'm not going to speculate today. I just wanted to kind of point out a couple of good things that I thought I saw on the game film and that were noticeable in statistical categories that, you know, could kind of take, you know, a little bit of solace in knowing that there were actually a couple of good spots on the defense this year or this past week. With that, I'm going to wrap it up here for our Tuesday.
