Hello, everybody. Welcome back into Locked On Colts, pretty Locked On Podcast Network.
Today, as always, I'm your host, Evan Setter. I'm joined by our weekly guest on the show, Zach Hickestan.
How are you doing, Zach?
Pretty good, man. Obviously, there's not much optimism around the team now after that huge loss against the Texans.
But, you know, I'm doing as good as anyone could expect right now.
Yeah, holiday weekend, so there's at least stuff outside of the Colts you can look ahead to.
But let's talk about that game first, Zach.
20-17 was the final score.
You haven't had a chance to have a podcast since then.
What was your thoughts?
Because this defense, I think, did a really good job against Deshaun Watson.
Of course, they had a couple busted plays down the field with Hopkins and Fuller.
But against that kind of team, it's going to happen sometimes.
But that offense especially, we're going to handle that later on in the show, Zach.
But the defense did well, and the, really just let them out the dry.
Yeah, you know, overall thoughts of the game is the Colts, you know, they have a top defense,
you know, I'm not going to say it's top five, or maybe even top 10 defense, but they have
a very good defense to understand, you know, how to go off the field on third down how
to stop teams in the red zone.
The secondary is playing really well outside of a couple, you know,
breakdowns they had this week.
The secondary is playing pretty well, and that's with a lot of injuries
on the year and a lot of rookies having to play a lot of playing time.
So very encouraged by the secondary, and the linebacker group
has been very good, especially with Bobby Okereke playing a lot recently.
And even the defensive line, you know, to a degree has been very good.
I think we would like to see a little bit more pressure up front,
but I think they've been playing well. So overall, I think the defense, especially after this game, you know, to a degree has been very good. I think we would like to see a little bit more pressure up front, but I think they've been playing well.
So overall, I think the defense, especially after this game, you know,
they only gave up 20 points to a very good Texans team.
That's five weeks in a row.
You know, if you want to kind of stretch it a little bit,
five weeks in a row where they've given up under, you know, 20 or less points.
So I think that's just phenomenal defense.
And I think overall they're playing really well as a unit.
So overall takeaway from this game before we get to offense the defense really stepped up and i think uh you know they played a pretty good game outside of the few
coverage busts they had yeah i feel like as well just looking ahead for a second here zach this
defense next year if they add maybe a defense tackle in the draft or another corner in the draft
i feel like this defense with iberflues getting more adjusted and those guys really developing under him,
this could be, like you mentioned, a really good defense next year.
Yeah, certainly.
You know, I would like to see another defensive tackle,
maybe another edge pressure, another edge rusher,
either through the draft or free agency,
just to add more depth and solidify that a bit.
But, you know, if they bring back all the guys that are free agents
on the defensive side, which isn't many at all,
and these young guys take steps forward, you know, Kamoko Ture comes back
and gets to the form he was playing at earlier in the year.
Ben Bonnegut takes that second-year lead
that Ture took going into this year.
I think we could see a really good defense
next year, especially with Ibra Flues
kind of figuring out his way a little bit, knowing when to be aggressive,
when to back off, and
really coaching these guys up in form tackling
too, which has been great.
Yeah, I really like this defense, and I think going forward
they're going to be one of the strengths of this team.
If this Colts team can learn how to figure out their passing attack on offense,
I think this team's very good.
But right now, obviously, that's just a major flaw
in why the team has faltered in recent weeks.
Yeah, let's go over that offense now, Zach.
The rushing game, of course, is there.
They have the run the down ball slogan they've been doing all year.
And they're definitely doing it on games like this on Thursday
against Houston.
Jonathan Williams, your guy, had a really big, big game.
And a lot of touches, too.
30 touches for Jonathan Williams, which is very impressive to me.
But outside of the running attack, this passing offense is just anemic right now,
Zach.
Just no deep shots at all.
They've only had one touchdown this year going over 20 yards.
And that was on a fourth down conversion.
Hail Mary to Eric Ebron. It's the Raiders. So, really, if you take that out, zero, 20 only had one touchdown this year going over 20 yards, and that was on a fourth-down conversion. Hail Mary to Eric Ebron against the Raiders. So really, if you take that
out, zero, 20-plus-yard touchdown this year for the passing offense. That's just inexcusable,
in my opinion. What's going on with this passing offense? Do you need a team to start to figure
out Jacoby Brissett a little bit? Yeah, you know, there's a couple factors to it, and I don't want
to just place all the blame on Jacoby Brissett, but a good bit of it does go to him. You know,
he's going to his checkdowns a little too quick.
He's really struggling whenever other teams are blitzing,
which has been a rarely apparent since the Kansas City game.
You know, early in the year, this passing game wasn't great,
but it was serviceable.
You know, now it's got to the point where ever since that Kansas City game,
it has not been serviceable because the Chiefs kind of showed the rest of the league,
hey, all you got to do is blitz the Colts whenever you need to stop,
and Brissette cannot pick up that blitzer and find his hot read quick enough.
So that's a big issue.
And also, he's just not trusting his receivers down the field,
and he's not throwing it unless it's wide-open throws.
I mean, we've seen, I mean, you got to say two games for sure
where he looked like, you know, potentially a franchise guy,
potentially a starting quarterback.
Third game would probably be that Chargers game to start the year.
But outside of that, he's been very ineffective this season.
And I've kind of hinted at on here a little bit the last couple weeks,
you know, where he's been okay enough to win games.
But I just don't think it's sustainable, you know, winning a game,
winning all these games without a passing attack.
In the NFL, you can't have the 28th, 29th ranked passing attack to be successful.
I think the only teams below them right now are the Dolphins, Bengals, and Bears,
you know, teams that are not very good.
So the Colts definitely need to get better there.
And obviously, there's some other factors.
You know, the wide receiver group's been very dinged up this year.
The backups really haven't been great overall.
The tight end group's been a little bit of a letdown,
even though they're still pretty good.
On the offensive line, overall, they've had a good year,
but they've been up a little bit more pressure, for sure. But, you know, at the end of the day, it comes down to the quarterback and we could see it on Thursday.
You know, Frank Reich was calling a very passive game plan because he was, you know,
Brissette was knocking the ball down the field when he called open shot. So you saw Frank Reich
late in the game, even when they need to go down for a score, still over-relying on that running
game because he just didn't trust Brissette to get the ball down the field so I think all that's very
telling and uh yeah I think Thursday was kind of indicative of what we have seen from Jacoby all
season it just got magnified because the team actually lost when he had one of those bad games
so we'll see what they do going forward but this cannot continue you can't have the you know the
28th 29th ranked passing attack in the league
and expect to find success in the NFL nowadays.
Yeah, the first four starts with Jacoby Brissett, Eric,
228 yards passing per game.
The last five starts, though, it's gone all the way down to 191,
which is a steep dive from what we saw in the first four weeks of the season.
But let me ask you about Brissett, Zach, because if you follow Zach on Twitter,
I had Zach Hicks, too, if you haven't already, listeners.
He had a take on Twitter. I think I agree with you now too after I've been watching draft guys,
but I think if you followed Zach on Twitter this weekend, I think you kind of let it be known
that you don't think Jacoby's the answer. So why don't you explain why you don't think Jacoby's the answer after
not only the sample size, but especially after Thursday?
Yeah, and you know, it's tough because I kind of said it to a couple guys
off of Twitter after the Oakland game, because the Oakland game's where I kind of said it to a couple guys off of Twitter after the Oakland game
because the Oakland games where I kind of finally saw it where it was like he's not going to be the
guy for us I just didn't want to kind of you know put it out there yet because the Colts are winning
games and and it seems you know not really the time for people to hear it but you know now that
we've lost that big game on the road to a divisional opponent and the team's really not looking great,
it's really time to talk about this issue because it's been an issue all season.
I think Brissette has all the intangibles to be a very good quarterback in this league.
I mean, he's got the arm.
He's excellent in the pocket.
I mean, he moves so well and sheds defenders effortlessly.
But at the end of the day, when you watch these games,
he's not pushing the ball down
the field. He's not throwing it down the field unless the guy is wide open or he's desperate
late in the game. He's just having so many issues with those key areas of football. You know,
you can survive with a quarterback who's overly aggressive. You can survive with a quarterback
who is even overly passive as long as they take those occasional shots.
You can't survive in the NFL if you don't use touch, anticipation, aggressiveness at all.
I mean, these are very core aspects of being a quarterback.
And honestly, they're not really easy to, like, you know, teach a quarterback to do this stuff.
You know, touch kind of comes natural. Anticipation comes natural.
Aggressiveness is a mindset that's hard to fix.
So overall, just long term, when you look at what Brissette's done this year,
you look at all the film, and even when you look back at 2017, you can see kind of same things.
I just don't think he's a long term guy for this team. And, and I don't see this team,
you know, especially these recent weeks, with how the team has kind of faltered a bit.
You know, they're not going to be in a position where they're really going to compete for a title
this year, because of that passing attack, because of, you know, Jacoby
Brissett's passive play. So I think, you know, the best move would be to, you know, at least try to
find some successor, even if, you know, Brissett's a starter again next year, finding someone who is
the long-term option and not just settling for this average quarterback. I like Jacoby Brissett.
I think he's a great leader in the locker room.
He does some things really well.
He'll never put you in a position to lose a game,
but he just won't win you games.
In today's NFL, you need a passing attack that can win you games,
and he's just not going to be that guy.
So, you know, I hope for the best for him.
I think he's a great quarterback, but like a great person, and I think he can be a good quarterback,
but I don't think it's going to happen here in Indy,
and I think they should look for their long-term option.
Guys, let's have a chat real quick.
Remember the days when you're always ready to go?
Now you can cruise to performance and get that extra confidence in bed.
Listen up.
BlueChew.com.
That's blue like the color blue.
BlueChew brings you the first chewable to the same FDA-approved active ingredients
as Vagrant Cialis, so you know they work.
You can take them anytime, day or night, even on a full stomach.
And since they're chewable, they're twice as fast as a pill,
and you can be ready whenever an opportunity arises. Again again that is bluechew.com for all the latest
information yeah it kind of reminds me a little bit of alex smith zach where he's kind of in that
15 to 20 range for kansas city a couple years ago as far as quarterbacks in nfl that wasn't good
enough they were a playoff team and never got over the hump and they've got patch my homes in the
draft but before we go on to the draft because there's a really interesting report this weekend
from chris boward about him going to scout a certain quarterback.
Before we get into that, though, I wanted to ask you,
because I know some fans out there kind of think that Jacoby's still –
his development is still on par as far as trajectory.
But I think people don't realize that he's going to be 27 years old
in two weeks.
Do you think – we've seen kind of the peak of Jacoby right now
as far as this is kind of the guy we're going to see throughout his career.
Maybe that's kind of unfair to say, but I feel like two years of sample size
and him kind of regressing again in the second half of the season like he
did in 2017 kind of shows me a lot at least. Yeah, and you know, the thing is, again, he's 27.
He's not, you know, people always throw the Peyton Manning through X amount of picks his rookie year.
People always throw that out there and such. You know, there's a big difference between a 22-year-old
who you spent, you know, first overall pick on or on or you know even a top 10 or even a first
round pick you know at all uh 22 overall a 22 year old who was a first rounder compared to a 27 year
old who was a third or fourth I think he was a late third rounder there's just a huge difference
there and I know a lot of people don't want to talk about draft status but there's a reason why
these guys go as high as they do they have the talent and they have the intangibles to to be you know a top tier quarterback or potentially be a top tier quarterback so when
you have a guy who's going on 27 he's on a second team now I I there's not much breathing room for
him you know there's not much more development you can do there's not this this grand future
for him if he's not picking up by the time he's 27 so I don't know how much more he can develop you know currently I think he's around like the 18 to 20 range for quarterbacks in the
league maybe he can get up to the 13 14 15 range but again like is that really going to be good
enough to win you a Super Bowl I mean the AFC since 2002 or whatever it is has had has been
only represented by four different quarterbacks or three different quarterbacks in the Super Bowl.
It's been Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Ben Rosberger,
and then the one outlier, which was Joe Flacco.
Do you want to pray to be that one outlier with an average quarterback,
or do you want to strive to get one of those better quarterbacks?
I'm not saying Ben Rosberger or Tom Brady grow on trees, but if you are not shooting for that,
then you're never going to find that consistency.
So I'm not saying, you know, oh, just go find your franchise quarterback.
I'm saying shoot for one because settling for average,
you're just praying to be an outlier that can make it to the championship,
and that's just not sustainable.
So, again, I like Jacoby.
I think he can be a decent quarterback in this league,
but I just don't think what he is is sustainable for success,
and if it's not sustainable, you've got to look to move on.
Totally agree with you there, Zach, on all your points,
because I know some Coltans are reacting in a negative way
as far as the criticism for Seth the last few days.
But we've seen it throughout the season, not just one game against Houston,
where it's been these inconsistent issues where a franchise quarterback
shouldn't be making these mistakes consistently, but Jacoby is.
So definitely something to watch moving forward.
But let me ask you, Zach, about this this because I usually on Saturdays on Twitter I I search on Twitter the the term
Colt Scout because usually there's some teams that are some things that put out who's out there as
far as scouting goes and I did it late on Saturday night and I noticed that Chris Ballard on one of
the tweets I found was at Utah State and I immediately jumped out of my chair because
this seems very important Zach because this is the first time
we've seen Chris Ballard go out of his way to Logan, Utah,
to go watch a quarterback upcoming the 2020 draft.
And that kind of shows us in our last discussion about Jacoby
that maybe Chris Ballard himself is looking toward the future here.
Yeah, certainly.
And, you know, it's funny because I think it was your tweet earlier today
or maybe yesterday where you said Ballard has only personally visited
five games this year. And if you look at those five games two of them are Notre Dame games two of
them are Ohio State games so those are you know teams that are pretty close by you know Ohio State
is not too far away from from the Colts and so is Notre Dame Notre Dame's right there but this game
the fifth one was Utah State and Boise that's nowhere near you know Indianapolis that's that's
way out there.
That's out of his way.
So that makes me think he was going out of their personal form
to look at Jordan Love out there from Utah State,
which I think is outstanding.
I think that would be a great fit for this team and a great long-term fit.
But, yeah, that's very exciting seeing that maybe he sees what we see
and Brissette's not the franchise guy.
Yeah, I've been watching Jordan Love tape the last few days since that report
came out on Saturday, Zach, and I'm blown away just by the arm talent so far.
I know some people criticize Love for his stats this year,
but if you just watch the tape and not just the box score,
some of the throws he makes are ridiculous.
I saw a couple of games earlier today.
It was really reminding me of Patrick Mahomes,
but maybe only three or four quarterbacks in the NFL can make these types of
throws that he made against Stony Brook and against Wyoming, for example.
What's your overall thoughts on Jordan Love?
Because at this point, I'm getting pretty close to going all-in on this guy
the more I watch him.
Yeah, so overall, I think he's a very intriguing quarterback prospect.
You know, I'm not going to say right now that he's ready to come into the NFL
and dominate.
You know, he's not going to be your superstar quarterback from day one.
But I think if you kind of go the Patrick Mahomes route
where you sit him for a year, you have him learn from, you know,
Frank Reich on how to read defenses and all that kind of stuff in the NFL,
and then you have him learn from Tom House that there's a throwing motion.
You have him learning from Dakota Brisson on leadership and stuff like that.
I think you could have a very, very special quarterback here
because he's got the arm strength.
He's got the anticipation. He's got the deep accuracy.
I mean, he's got just about everything you look for in a quarterback.
He's got the aggressiveness. You know, he's got all those high end traits.
He just needs to be kind of molded into an NFL quarterback.
So right now he's not ready to start, which is perfectly fine as long as you have that long term plan for him.
But I think he's he's got unlimited potential going forward.
I think a lot of the flaws that people are kind of coming away with
was a lot of what people missed on with Patrick Mahomes a couple years ago.
I saw a lot of people saying Patrick Mahomes is a third or fourth-round guy,
myself included.
I thought Patrick Mahomes was like a second-round guy
back when I was doing that draft
because I was so fixated on what he wasn't doing then.
But a big part of scouting is not looking about what he can't do. It's about what he can do.
And when you look at Jordan Love, he can do it all. So I'm not saying right now, you know,
he can come in and be perfect. But I think if you, if that's Ballard's guy, if he really is fixated
on him, I think that long-term this could be, you know, a franchise-changing guy.
I think he's got that talent.
Yeah, I think Jordan Love is, like I mentioned,
kind of the quarterback I'm going all-in on right now
just because Justin Herbert, if you watched Plickets of Arizona State Saturday,
he just was horrendous.
I think Jordan Love's better than him as far as upside goes.
I think Love arguably has some of the best upside in the quarterback class
with Tua and also maybe a couple others.
But I think Jordan Love definitely has the
outside being a superstar correct in the NFL but let me ask you Zach as well just what do you think
if at this point because you actually tweet us out in July at training camp that you heard about
Chris Bauer being fixated with Jordan Love he'd been being interested back in July and now it's
November and he's watching maybe his final home game of his college career do you think I know
that this is of course leaning in a little bit because we don't know for sure, but do you think after – for six months now
you've heard about Jordan Love and Chris Bauer being connected to the Colts.
Do you think this is Bauer's guy?
I think it could be.
And let me clarify a little bit on that statement.
I did exaggerate a little bit in the tweet, which is misleading.
I think I deleted it now because it was a little bit misleading.
What I really heard when I was at training camp was when Ballard was asked
about this upcoming draft, the two guys that he highlighted,
he said he really likes Justin Herbert and Jordan Love.
He didn't really talk about anybody else.
Those are the two guys that he just kind of threw out as guys that he likes.
But obviously, you know, he's shown some interest.
He went to the Utah State game to basically just watch him.
I think Boise State has a pass rusher on the other side
that he maybe was looking at as well.
But, I mean, he was there for Jordan Love,
and Jordan Love put on a pretty good show.
So I think, you know, it could be his guy.
I think Ballard's a very smart draft evaluator.
We've seen these first couple years.
I mean, he's landed a lot of good players from Quentin Nelson,
Ryan Smith, Marlon Mack, you know, Kamoko Ture.
I mean, he's landed a lot of good players.
He knows what he's doing when it comes to evaluating.
So if that's his guy, and obviously he's my guy as well,
then I'm fully on board with that.
I think Jordan Love would just be perfect for this team.

Yeah, definitely something we talk about throughout the office and here on the podcast
because draft season is getting closer and closer.
I know it's only November now, but I'm a very big draft nick myself,
and I love talking about it.
So we'll be talking about it a lot moving forward here, Zach.
But let's talk about the Titans game.
Before we do that, I wanted to update everyone about Eric Ebron.
He's out for the season now on injury reserve due to some ankle injuries.
What's your thoughts on Ebron?
I think Ebron's play his last game as a Colt.
Yeah, you know, I think he has, especially if, you know,
Ross Travis even shows that in the last couple games.
I do think Ebron's played the last game.
You know, it just wasn't a fit with what Jacobra said.
Obviously, not many receivers are this year, but I think it just wasn't a great fit this year.
There were some frustrating things.
You know, I obviously had that meeting with the coaches about getting more touches and getting more involved.
He had his fair share of drops as well, though, that contributed to all that stuff.
So, overall, I think this team just values Jack Doyle more,
and I don't see them paying that much money for two tight ends.
So we'll see what they do going forward,
but I think if they're going to pick Doyle over Ebron,
Ebron will find a new home here this offseason.
But again, just to kind of clarify a little bit,
Eric Ebron shouldn't be ridiculed or anything for his time.
I mean, he had the best
year of his career last year uh you know he was huge last season to their playoff run he was one
of the best players on the team uh so i know it's been down year this year but eric ebron was big
to this team the last two years so uh you know props eric ebron for coming in and kind of turning
his career around a little bit uh but i think going forward he'll find another team other than
the colts yeah it wouldn't surprise me zach i know you used to follow the redskins i think maybe ebron if we're
talking about big contracts and teams like like giving out money i could see him maybe being in
washington i don't know but maybe something like that makes sense yeah bron but let's talk about
a little bit of this game because this titans team is super high right now zach they're going in they
just put up 40 plus points in the jaguars and the colts almost put 40 themselves but this titans
team and ryanannehill is surprising.
I think he's kind of earning himself a new deal with the Titans.
Yeah, you know, Ryan Tannehill has been very good for them.
And kind of like what we said earlier, you know,
where I was talking about first-round picks versus third-round picks,
there's a reason why guys go in the first round.
It's because they have that talent,
and they've obviously sold somebody on their talent and upside.
And Tannehill has done that here in Tennessee.
He's kind of reached his potential his last four games.
Obviously, he's been a very hot and cold player throughout his whole career,
so we don't know if this is going to be something that's going to prolong
and maybe get them to the playoffs.
But as of right now, you can't really pick out too many flaws in this game.
He's picking his opportunities.
He's being aggressive when he has to.
He's making plays on the ground with his feet.
I think he's put together some really good performances here,
and he's going to be a tough matchup for the Colts.
You know, it's not same old Marcus Mariota where he's going to dump the ball down,
you know, third and 10, dump it down for a two-yard gain.
You know, Tannehill's going to attack, and he's going to get the ball down the field,
and he's going to use his legs a lot better than Mariota even did.
So I think the Colts should be really ready for this team
because the Colts are kind of limping into this game against, you know,
Tennessee, and Tennessee's on fire right now.
So it's going to be a tough one for sure.
Yeah, what really worries me, Zach,
is coming off to his low point of the season so far,
Jacoby Brissett, and then going against the Titans again,
who I think had one of his worst games of the season
in early September against this team, multiple turnovers,
just looked very riled against this Titans defense.
After seeing the film on that game plus the Texas game,
I'm kind of worried that this Titans defense,
which has really improved this year, could kind of have their way a little bit
if the offensive line doesn't show up.
Yeah, you know, they are a very good defense like they were earlier in the year.
Obviously, they didn't get as much props early in the season
because their offense was so stagnant.
But they do a very good defense
still to go along with their real hot offense. So yeah, on all fronts, it's going to be a tough
game. The Colts can obviously win because they have the offensive line, they have the running
attack, they have the defense that is playing really well the last five weeks as well.
But I think it's going to come down to these quarterbacks. If Persec can turn around and have
a good game this week and the Colts' defense can kind of limit Tannehill, I think it's going to come down to these quarterbacks. You know, if Brissette can turn it around and have a good game this week and the Colts even from Kyle Linn at Tandon Hill,
I think that'll be the key in this game.
But we'll see.
Again, the Titans are kind of rolling into this game.
Yeah, how big of a game is this, Zach, for this?
Not only the Colts' season, but their playoff hopes
because they're on the outside looking right now.
The Raiders are ahead of them.
So are the Steelers due to tiebreakers right now.
I feel like if the Colts lose this game on Sunday,
it might be the end of the season for them.
Yeah.
You know, you don't want to say it is at 6-6,
but basically it is, you know, losing back-to-back games
against division rivals, losing – I think that would be five
of the last six or four of the last five at that point
if they lose this one.
It would just be kind of a tough pill to swallow
and really hard to move on especially when you have a tough game against the saints coming up
uh you have another tough you know the buccaneers are no easy out with how uh explosive their
offense is uh so there's still some tough games after that that they have to somehow you know
overcome but you have to win your division games the nfl to make the playoff so they lose this week
uh i wouldn't say the season's over.
But I would say, you know, there's probably like a less than 10% chance
that they have a chance to make the playoffs and prolong their season.
Before I let you go here, Zach, what is your prediction here for Sunday?
I'm going to go with 23-16 Colts.
I think it's going to be a really ugly game like we saw in September.
I think the Colts rushing attacks will be the difference here.
They're going to stop Tannehill, I think, a little bit.
I'm going to go with a slight Colts win,
but now I'm not really feeling that confident about it.
Yeah, you know, if it is a low-scoring game,
then they're definitely playing to the Colts' strengths
because the Colts want to keep this low.
They want to keep it on the ground.
They want to keep the game as slow as possible.
So, yeah, if it's a low-scoring game like that,
then I definitely see a Colts win.
I'm going to go – for right now, I'll go 24-20 to
Colts. That's only because
everything's pointing towards
the Titans winning this game, but the Titans are kind of
prone to those letdown games.
They've done it every single year. They'll beat the
Patriots and come back and lose.
It's like the Bills or whatever, and then they'll beat
X team and they'll get beat up by the Colts
next week. They always kind of do this
where right when their fan base is about to buy
into the team, they have that letdown game.
So I'm not fully bought in on them yet just because of that.
So I'll say 24-20 Colts.
The Colts have the clear advantage in coaching.
I think they have a clear advantage on the ground, even though Derrick Henry is playing
well.
I think the Colts defense does well against Derrick Henry.
So I'll say Colts, slight victory for now.
Thanks again for joining us, Zach.
Appreciate the time, as always.

A big game for the Colts on Sunday after a disappointing loss Thursday in Houston.
Zach, appreciate the time, as always.
Thanks.
