Hello, everybody. Welcome back into Locked on Colts, probably Locked on Podcast Network.
Today's audience is Evan Sutter and you're joined by our weekly guest on the show,
the Colts beat writer for the Herald Bulletin in Anderson, Indiana, George Berman.
How are you doing today, George?
Good. How are you doing today?
Doing great. Thanks again, as always, coming on here each Tuesday throughout the season.
I know a lot of our listeners really appreciate your content you bring to us, George,
and on the Herald Bulletin as well, if you haven't already, go ahead and read George's work over there
and follow him on Twitter at GMBremmer.
But let's talk a little bit, George, about this Tampa Bay game because what an interesting game that was it was probably
the most entertaining game of the year so far from a points perspective but a very confusing game all
around yeah it was kind of a crazy game I think at one point on Twitter I talked about it feeling
like a car going down a mountain with with no brakes while ablaze and it really kind of felt
that way the whole time it's just out of control, crazy game, big swings both sides.
And then the one common denominator that we've seen the last three weeks
with this football team, the inability to make some critical plays
in the fourth quarter, and you watch a lead turn into a loss,
and that's how they got to this point where they're 6-7 right now.
Yeah, it's incredible.
Who would have thought at this point, George, 5-2 about five weeks ago,
now 6-7, the Colts are really on the doorstep of missing out on the playoffs this year.
It pretty much is over if they lose another game this season.
They're going to have to win out and really get a lot of help at this point.
But let me talk to you a little bit about Jacoby Brissett here for a minute
because I think an interesting game for Jacoby because I'm just surprised
and maybe confused like some Colts fans are.
They took a lot of deep shots on Sunday.
Obviously, it was a weak 10-base secondary,
but I just wonder where this was throughout the season, George,
because we just haven't seen it often,
especially with just such a weak wide receiver core right now.
We didn't see it with T.Y. Hilton when he was out there.
Paris Killman was healthy earlier this season.
A sudden change in the offensive philosophy for Jacoby Brissett.
Yeah, you know, I think it was a couple weeks ago,
maybe a week or two ago when Frank Reich mentioned that he wanted to see
the yards per attempt go up.
And I think that was kind of his tacit admission that he didn't like the
amount of checkdowns that had gone on earlier.
If you look at last year and Andrew Luck, you know,
as the offense got going, as the season wore on,
as they all got a little more comfortable together.
You saw them take more and more deep shots.
I think that it was a combination of things.
I thought he was a little more aggressive against Tennessee as well.
With Tampa Bay in general, I think when you look at their run defense and those rankings,
and then you look at their passing defense and those rankings,
it was a chance to make something happen in the game.
And I thought at times Jacoby did a really good job with that.
I think that's been the frustrating thing with him throughout the year.
You could go back to that third quarter touchdown drive,
the last touchdown the Colts got, and watch the big plays he made,
especially during that drive.
If you could get that Jacoby Bursette all the time,
I think people would feel really good about him
and about the future of this franchise.
Then you go back into the fourth quarter,
and especially at the end of the game there,
that third down, I think it was third and two right before the end of the game,
and he just missed Jack Doyle, threw it behind him.
If he puts that ball in front of Doyle, it's first down.
That drive keeps going.
We have no idea how this game ends.
That Jacoby Brissett gives you a lot of questions
and i think you've seen a little bit of both uh i i personally think the more aggressive version
of jacoby that we've seen the last two weeks is what they're moving towards i think that's what
they want to see they know they weren't getting enough big plays in the passing game it wasn't
supporting the run game the way that it should. It'll just be interesting to see if that more aggressive version of Jacoby
can also be a more consistent version of Jacoby.
Yeah, it's definitely going to be interesting because I think at this point
we all know Jacoby's going to be the week one starter in 2020,
but how this obviously goes, I think, is a very important step for Jacoby
per se if he wants to be the long-term answer for this team.
But at this point, George, it's fair to say ever since he came back
from his concussion, Darius Leonard has looked like a superstar linebacker, one of the best linebackers in the NFL.
And he's really proven that point over the last six weeks, especially on Sunday.
He had two interceptions, a touchdown on one of them.
He really baited Jameis Winston to both those interceptions.
And he was a monster on a lot, just running all over the field like we usually see from Darius Leonard.
Is it fair to say, George, we're seeing maybe a leap right now?
Even if it's crazy to say because he was an All-Pros rookie year and he somehow didn't make the Pro Bowl.
But if you look at the way Darius Leonard is playing now over the last month or so,
I think maybe the best structure is correct.
I know, and it is crazy to say.
You're 100% correct, and I think it's true.
I think this is a guy who can affect the game in so many ways.
I remember, and I've got to give Stephen Holder credit from the Athletic,
last year, week two in Washington, that big breakout game that Leonard had. I think he had 19 tackles. It was
one of the first times that everybody kind of raised their eyebrows a little bit like, hey,
you know, maybe we need to pay attention to this kid. And Holder had covered the Bucs back in the
90s, in the early part of the 2000s. And he said that day, you know, second game of Darius Leonard's career,
this kid reminds me of Derrick Brooks in some ways.
And I think that continues to be a really good comparison.
Derrick Brooks, for my money, one of the best to ever play the game,
especially at that Will Linebacker spot in this scheme.
And that's the guy you see Darius Leonard growing into.
The one thing, and I think it doesn't get talked about enough,
because Leonard is so freakishly athletic,
and he does so many things with his speed, with his strength,
some of the first interception in particular,
getting out and reaching up to make that play.
He does so many things like that that draw the attention, and rightfully so.
I think this is also one of the smartest guys on this team.
He has such a very high football IQ.
He sees the game so well.
I think that's part of what makes him so special.
Yeah, I think everyone's excited to see what year three could be like for Darius Langer.
If he takes another leap forward in year three,
I think you might have a defensive player of the year on our hands in Indianapolis
for the first time in a very long time since Bob Sanders.
But let's talk a little about the struggles in Tampa Bay for the secondary on Sunday, because that
was a really ugly game for them.
No Kenny Moore, of course.
Rocky Seen got hurt in that game as well.
Pierre Desir really struggled against Mike Evans before he went out with a hamstring
injury himself.
It just was curious to me, George, why Mattie Verkloos didn't run a lot more man coverage
once Mike Evans went out.
Because Jameis Winston, I know he has his moments and inconsistencies, but outside those
interceptions, he just torched that defense almost 500 yards.
He had 456 yards passing, and that's just inexcusable.
Yeah, it was as bad a passing defense day as I can remember
since that Ben Roethlisberger game, I think 500 yards, six touchdowns
a couple years ago in Pittsburgh.
That's what it was reminding me of as it was unfolding.
I honestly think the answer to the man question is Kenny Moore.
I think you saw a big reason he's so important to this team,
a big reason why he's still underpaid on this team.
I don't think that they could match up.
Even after Mike Evans went out, I don't think they could match up
very well in man coverage.
And so given two bad decisions to make, I think Matt Eberflus went with the idea
that he was going to play zone, at least make the Bucs take the long way
down the field rather than that 60-some yard touchdown pass to Evans
and hope that Winston would make a mistake.
A few times he did.
I think the offense didn't take advantage enough of those times.
And then defense didn't do a good enough job of getting to him
and rattling him forcing him
into a few more of those uh turnovers as well what would you think about malik hooker on sunday
because i know he had an interception thanks to a chris godwin tip but i feel like that was one of
the more surprising games from malik hooker as far as his struggles go because i think he wasn't 100
just based off what we saw on sunday just because he was on the injury report earlier in the week with a footer injury, I believe. But it was surprising to me just how
slow he looked. They look like a level or two slower for Malik Hooker. And I was kind of surprised
with how easily he was getting beat a lot in those zone coverages.
A hundred percent. You know, I think that I agree with you. I don't think he was really a hundred
percent, but that's football this time of year, right? I mean, a lot of guys are dinged up, whether they're on the injury report or not.
I think he was probably dealing with a little more than some with foot injury,
but there's no doubt about it.
This was a game going in.
I felt like they needed Malik Hooker to have a good game.
This was the kind of offense that he should do well against.
You know, just his presence would kind of keep some of those deep shots from happening.
He wasn't playing well, both mentally and physically.
There were a couple miscommunications in there that led to really big plays.
And, again, you know, I can't help but wonder if Kenny Moore is out there.
Does he fix some of that?
It's not that he's Superman and he's going to cause everything to get better,
but it could have been, you know, a lot better than 452 yards and 38 points.
And it did need to be much better than that for the Colts to come away with a victory.

Yeah, it was a very close loss for the Colts.
And I just wonder as well, just with how they're losing these games recently,
George, I saw this earlier, pointed out earlier this week,
but 17 straight points for Tampa Bay, 14 straight for Tennessee,
I believe also 14 straight for the Texans.
That's three straight weeks in a row this team isn't finishing games.
What reason or sign is that for you?
Yeah, you know, it is a problem.
And I think the thing of it is it's not just one thing.
And to me, that's going to be the off-season project for this team.
I know we're going to get into that a little bit more later.
But to me, that's the biggest question. You've got to go back to these fourth quarters and look at everything
and find out where are the breakdowns.
And everybody has to ask themselves, what can I do better?
And they will.
I mean, I think that's one of the things about Frank Reich and Chris Ballard
is that they're going to turn over every stone.
Even last year when they went 10-6, they won 9-10 to finish out.
They won the playoff game.
They were still going to go back and did go back and look at every single game
and every single decision they made.
They're going to do that again this offseason,
and I really believe the fourth quarter is going to be the focal point.
And to me, it's a number of things.
You know, some of it's play calling.
There's no question about that.
It's not all play calling the way some people feel,
but there's no doubt that some of it's play calling.
And Frank Reich's going to have to look at that,
decide what he needs to do differently in that regard.
Some of it's execution.
And players have to look at that and figure out what they can do better.
And some of it's personnel.
And Chris Ballard's going to look at that and figure out what he can do better.
But the defense has been complicit in this as well.
I'm not letting them off the hook.
They need to have better fourth quarters as well. It just feels like the offense in particular, they've stopped
scoring in the fourth quarter. And when you're turning the ball back over to the other team as
quickly as they have been at times, and even possessions that last a little longer but come
up empty, those are big swings in these games that you're losing by three points, by a blocked field goal, by one thing that's making it go the other way.
And that's why it's the toughest thing in sports, I think, is football
because you have to have every piece of your engine running on the same page
and with the same intensity.
And the Colts are going to have to go back and look at the whole operation
as it pertains to the fourth quarter. The last point I want to hand with you same intensity, and the Colts are going to have to go back and look at the whole operation as it pertains to the fourth quarter.
The last point I want to hand with you, George,
as far as this Tampa Bay Buccaneers game goes,
before we do a quick preview of the Saints game as well,
what was your thoughts of Chase McLaughlin in his first game as a Colts kicker?
I know Adam Vettieri is now an injured reserve,
and it might be the end of his Colts career.
McLaughlin was 5 of 6.
He had a crucial miss in the second half that went off the uprights,
but I think it was a very consistent day for the Colts kicking wise I think it might be the best one honestly one of
the best kicking days for the Colts all year at this point it was good you know it was good until
it wasn't and then that's the thing I think it's funny because I've gotten a lot of heat on Twitter
uh because I said it strikes me as funny that nobody's mad at Chase McLaughlin right now
and I know I'm not as dense as I as I seem sometimes I'm very well aware that that this
had been a year-long struggle with Adam Benetary but at the end of the day a miss is a miss and
it's just as important no matter who made it no matter how it looked no matter how you felt about
it before or after and the bottom line is that missed field goal was every bit as big a deal
as anything that happened the rest of the year. If that field goal's good, the touchdown that Tampa Bay scores later just ties the game.
Everything about that final drive is a little bit different because you only need a field
goal to win.
It's a tough spot to put in.
Now, that doesn't mean that I think that Chase McLaughlin is a problem spot.
I'm not trying to say that.
But once again, a kicking mistake factors into
a really close loss. I think there's a lot to like about that kid. I think he's going to be
interesting to watch him over the last three weeks of the season. I think it'll be fun to
see if he's given a chance to earn the job as full-time next year. But look, when they have
the injuries that they have this year,
and we've talked about that a lot, the margin of error goes way down.
And whether it's kicking mistakes, whether it's inaccuracy by the quarterback,
whether it's drops by the receivers, bad play by the line, whatever it may be,
miscommunications in the secondary,
there's just been too much of it for this team to overcome.
Yeah, that's a good point to bring up there.
And definitely the McLaughlin miss played a big part in that momentum kind of
shifting back towards Tampa Bay late in that game.
But let's dive in now, George, to the Saints game for a few minutes here,
because honestly, I have a bad feeling about Monday night in New Orleans for
the Colts because the way the Saints lost in heartbreaking fashion against the
San Francisco 49ers, an absolute shootout, 48-46.
I think the Saints seem to be very motivated.
I think Drew Brees probably licking his chops watching that Jameis Winston
film himself.
Oh, absolutely.
You know, I think the last time the Colts played in that building was 62-7.
So, you know, the goal is not to be that bad,
and they probably won't be that bad.
But there's no doubt it's bad timing to go and play them on a Monday night
right now when they're fired up and they've got a lot to play for
in terms of that NFC playoff picture.
Colts, I believe with a loss, they're officially eliminated.
So there's something for the Colts to play for as well.
But when you look at this team right now,
and it doesn't look like a team that's going to be able to go in
and win a shootout, especially against a team defensively as solid as New Orleans has been
at times this year.
It's going to be a major, major test for this Indianapolis football team.
I feel like, honestly, though, George, on the same point,
I feel like with the way this Colts team comes out,
I feel like plays to their competition sometimes.
I honestly wouldn't be stunned if somehow they won this game.
Just because we saw it earlier in Kansas city.
I know it's a lot different now.
They were writing positive momentum at that point with this Colts team and
the way they can sometimes play at the competition.
I'm not ruling them out just yet,
but I feel like it could be one of those games that surprised us.
It's one of those things.
It's kind of funny in the sense that the season has been so crazy and so
unpredictable and absolutely nothing has happened the way you would expect it
to.
So in that vein, it would make sense if they went and won on Monday night in New Orleans,
simply because there's absolutely nothing to suggest that it would happen.
But you're right.
This year they have played much better against the better competition
and much worse against the worst competition.
I know that that secondary in particular is going to be upset about the way they played against Tampa Bay.
I'm sure that they're going to come out and want to put a better game on film.
But, again, this is a major challenge.
It doesn't mean it will be a blowout,
but I think winning this game is going to be very, very difficult.
If the Colts do want to win this game, George,
before we dive into some off-chain talk before we end today's show,
what would you say are your three keys to the Colts pulling off
another huge jaw-dropping stunner on Monday night?
Yeah, I mean, first of all, what they did in Kansas City,
they've got to find a way to run the ball,
and that's going to be very difficult against the Saints.
Not quite as good as the Bucs against the run,
but a very good stout defensive front.
Not going to make that easy.
I think that would be the best thing, that Kansas City formula,
run the ball, milk the clock, finish drives, something they haven't done the last few weeks.
It's not just gaining yards on the ground.
It's going in and putting that ball in the end zone.
Not been able to do that often enough in recent weeks.
And then they've got to find a way to force some turnovers.
And I know that's silly after you forced four of them on Sunday and still lose the game.
But they've got to find a way to rattle Drew Brees,
which is no easy thing to do, and to get a few turnovers.
And to me, that's going to be the key to the game.
Get a couple turnovers, control the clock with the running game,
and finish your drives.
This can't be a game where drives come up empty
or where touchdown drives in with three points.
As far as prediction goes for next Monday, George,
we're not going to talk again until after then,
before we dive into some offseason talk here for the final few minutes.
What would you say is your prediction on Sunday?
I'm going to go with something along the lines of probably 34 to 24.
Maybe the Colts get a couple of garbage-time touchdowns,
but I just have a bad feeling that with the way Jameis Winston torched up
that secondary, it's still very banged up, too.
It might be even worse now after some more injuries to Rocky Hacine on Sunday.
I think Drew Brees might have a wonderful game.
Yeah, I think that everything's set up for New Orleans to have a big game.
Again, it sort of looked that way going into Kansas City,
and they really kind of flipped everything on their head.
So it'll be interesting to see how it plays out.
But I think the great likelihood is that New Orleans gets a lot done
that they want to get done,
and the Colts are playing from behind for most of that game.
I'll go with 31-20 in a similar situation
where maybe the Colts make it look a little closer than it was at the end.

Let's dive in now, George, to some off-season talk here,
because I think this is the most important off-season comment for GM Chris
Fowler, because you have almost $100 million in cash space you still can use.
Obviously, Jack Dwell's contract extension maybe brings it down a little bit,
maybe toward $90 million.
Anthony Costanza still needs to be re-signed.
How important is this off-season period for Chris Dallard?
Because I feel like philosophically, I know he loves the draft.
I know he doesn't really love dipping his toes much in free agency.
But with this window, we talked about earlier, I think a couple weeks ago,
George, just with Andrew Luck not being on his team anymore,
they can't rely on an elite quarterback to really carry them.
I think they need to really splurge a little bit,
not like Ryan Grixen has free agency moves,
but I think make smart, savvy moves,
maybe some top free agents they need to get
because I think this team just philosophically
without Andrew Luck anymore,
there might need to be some changes
as far as the for office goes in their tactics.
It's got to be a course correction of an off season.
There's no doubt about that
just because it changed everything that they want to do.
One thing that I firmly believe about this season
and it's easy to say because it can't
be proven or disproven, but I firmly believe that if Andrew Luck was healthy, this team was going to
be a Super Bowl contender. From what I saw on the field, defense played well enough. What are they
missing? Someone to finish games in the fourth quarter. Who would that have been? To me, this team was built around him
in a way that was going to maximize his abilities and maximizing this team's potential.
So now it's going to be interesting to see how Ballard kind of shifts course on that and says,
all right, now that that's not the way things are, what's the best way to move forward? That's
what this offseason is all about.
I don't expect him to be a big player in free agency again.
I just don't think that that's going to be really the path that he takes.
They'll go and they'll pick their spots like Justin Houston last year,
like Devin Funchess last year.
But I don't think they're going to go out and be the Browns
or have that kind of a headlight grabbing offseason.
I could be wrong.
I've definitely been wrong before.
But I think you're more likely going to see that money get sunk into
re-signing Anthony Costanzo, getting those guys already on the roster,
extended, like we've seen happen already with Kenny Moore,
Rigoberta Sanchez, Luke Rhodes, now Jack Doyle.
I think you're going to see that.
Ryan Kelly's probably going to be one of those guys in line
for that kind of a deal.
To me, that's where it's at.
Now, if there is a guy out there, you know, I know last year
there were a couple guys that they were after.
I don't have names, but I know there were a couple guys
that they were after that they were ready to go to a pretty big price on that the market got crazy on and they ended up not going into those situations.
So if the guy, the right guy's there, you know, I think if a right tackle is somebody that they
really like, if there's a wide receiver that's a playmaker that they can count on, you know,
some of those positions, a big beefy defensive tackle. I don't think he's not going to spend the money per se,
but it's got to be the right fit on and off the field.
Yeah, you bring up a good point there.
I think Bauer's going to probably stick to his guns as far as maybe not
over the hill free agents, but maybe guys more so in their primes.
Justin Houston's probably a good example of that as far as when now veterans,
that makes sense.
But I think George, the draft, I know it's very far away now.
It's about five and a half months away.
But the closer we get, the more I'm intrigued by the possibility.
Let's say the Colts finish 6-10 and have a top 10 pick
or even 7-9 and have a top 15 pick.
Add in that Redskins top 35 pick right at the top of the second round,
I think they're in the top three right now.
This Colts team, I think, just with how aggressive they might be this offseason,
maybe more so in the past, I really think I'm intrigued
by the possibility of them doing something really different on draft
than what we've seen in the past because they have all these assets,
and I feel like this might be the final year they can really make
an aggressive move if they want to.
They definitely have a lot of assets.
It's going to be the same way, though.
I think when you look at the draft, it's going to be very similar
to the way he approaches free agency.
If there's a guy out there that he loves that he absolutely is sure on this is the guy
this is the future and they can go get him i'm sure he'll go do that i'm just not sure that
that's going to happen you know that that's always the big question is will he fall in love with them
enough to give up that that kind of assets even if they stay where they are you know that there's
a chance to make a big difference with those three picks.
If you're looking at something in top 15, then you're looking –
with Redskins pick, you're looking at three of the top 47,
definitely three of the top 50 picks in that range.
You know, what we've seen in the past from him with Darius Leonard,
with Brayden Smith, this is a spot where he can go and do a lot of damage,
and it's going to be critical that they do that.
One thing I know for sure, he's going to go out there, him and Frank Reich,
they're going to look under every rock.
They're going to explore every single avenue.
I think sometimes people think just because something didn't get done,
it wasn't explored.
And I don't think that's the case.
I think Ballard's just very particular about when he's going to pull the trigger
on these bigger moves.
It will happen.
It's just got to be, for lack of a better term, an Andrew Luck type of prospect.
You know, it's got to be somebody he sees as can't miss to go and do that.
Yeah, I really think it's going to be a really intriguing offseason
for the Colts here.
And what would you say, George, I know we talked before, I think a couple weeks ago, but a couple games now in the
rearview mirror, even more the Tampa Bay Buccaneers game also. What would you say are the maybe the
top three needs for this team heading into the offseason? Yeah, you know, I think it's going to
be an offense first kind of a draft. I could be wrong. I've thought that in the past and it hasn't
happened. But outside of that big, beefy defensive tackle,
maybe another long playmaking corner,
I'm not really sure what you're looking for on defense.
Certainly another pass rusher if the opportunity arises.
Everybody's going to say that every year,
but I think getting Kamoku Iture back, getting him healthy,
will probably be the addition that you need there.
So looking at the offense, definitely I think quarterback is a need now i agree with what you
said at the start of the show i think about an 80 chance maybe even better than that that jacoby
brissett's the starting quarterback week one next year that doesn't mean there won't be competition
on the roster and i think that if they find that guy one of those top 50 picks could be used on a
developmental quarterback somebody who can come in, learn behind Brissette,
you know, learn from Frank Wright and Nick Sirianni and Marcus Brady. I think there's a lot
here to support a young quarterback, and it'd be interesting to see if they decide to pull the
trigger there and bring in a developmental guy as competition for Brissette. Also, wide receivers
got to be way up the list, right? I mean, that's when you look
at the draft, the one thing that seems to be a consensus across the board, no matter who you're
talking to, every one of these draft guys seems to say, this is a special draft for wide receivers.
The further the Colts move up in that first round, the better the chance that they've got one of the
premier guys in that deep group. I look at a guy like CeeDee Lamb from Oklahoma,
I think there's a guy that can make a big difference no matter who the quarterback is.
You know, Jerry Judy from Alabama.
It's a very deep, very strong wide receiver draft,
and I think that's going to be a big focus point.
And then I think right tackle.
I think if you can go get a right tackle who maybe has some upside to replace Costanzo even in the future,
but for now can go play on that side and you can bump Braden Smith down to guard,
whereas more what they were looking at when they drafted him, I think that would be a really good
thing to help this offense as well. Yeah, those are, I think I'm running the money with you on
that because I think those positions are arguably the biggest needs for this team right now and moving forward long term. But
the last question I had for you, George, before we end today's show, appreciate the time as always.
I wanted to ask you, because I know you've probably seen this on Twitter too, Colts Twitter is really
divided right now as far as if you're a team tank or you actually want to see them win some games
down the stretch here. Because the draft position, like we were talking about earlier in the show,
could be a top 10 pick if they were 6-10. If they finish 8-8, though, it could be maybe number 20 overall at this point,
maybe about like 18-19, maybe around that range.
But where do you land on that fence, George?
Should fans be rooting for loss to help their draft position here a little bit,
or do you think that this team is really designed to win games here
and maybe have a strong finish this season?
I think it's important, no matter what team you are,
to finish the season strong.
And I think especially with this team being as young as they are, learning how to win is part
of the problem. It's part of why the fourth quarter hasn't gone their way as often as it hasn't.
So I think it's important to go out and try to win the games. That being said, I think fans to
me are in a good position right now. You go out there and you hope this team looks good and does
its best and finishes strong.
And if they don't, you take solace in the fact
that every loss moves them up a little bit further
and improves the draft.
Yeah, it's really going to be intriguing
how these final three weeks go here, George,
because they have New Orleans, obviously, next Monday.
They're going to have Carolina and Jacksonville,
two teams that are really stumbling right now.
That might be even a worse position than the Colts
over the last month or so.
So it's going to be a really intriguing finish
to the season for them.
