Starting point is 00:00:00 Hello everybody, welcome back into your latest episode of Locked on Colts, probably Locked on Podcast Network. Today's guest is Evan Satter. I'm doing a solo episode today, no guest. We're going to go all in on your latest Twitter mailbag. I appreciate everyone following with the support at Locked on Colts on Twitter if you're not already following us over there. We'd greatly appreciate it.
Starting point is 00:00:19 We really want to do these off-season mailbags pretty often here on the show and maybe once every two or three weeks. And here's the latest one here from our listeners here of Locked on Colts. We're going to dive straight into it here. The latest intel that I can try to give you guys, the latest opinions that I really think that the Colts should do as far as the questions you guys are going to throw my way. So appreciate it. Again, we have a lot in the mailbag today. So stay tuned for the next 30 minutes and awesome questions and answer time.
Starting point is 00:00:44 So first one up here is from Diego Rodriguez at pat o underscore drs he has two for us the first one is what's the best course of action anti-costanza retires well that that's the big question right now and for anyone listening out there I think it's concerning me more and more as we get closer and closer to the combine free agency the anti castanza has not made a decision yet i think it has to come here in the next two or so weeks i would imagine before the combine i think that would give the colt a nice heads up as far as you can go into the combine looking at top left tackles if you want to because left tackle if anti castanza leaves that's where the left tackle really comes into play here and possibly moving
Starting point is 00:01:22 up for a left tackle because at this point the left tackles in this class are really being skyrocketing up the draft boards because from what I've seen so far four or five are going in the top 12 there's a lot of the elite talent of tackle is going in round one so round two could make sense too if Costanto does retire but I think getting a blue chip left tackle for the Archie Cody Brissett a free agent or a draft pick I think having another elite left tackle Chris Bauer loves the Brissett, a free agent or a draft pick. I think having another elite left tackle, Chris Bauer loves the trenches. I think going in the direction of someone like Makai Becton, 6'7", 360 pound left tackle, a mauler from Louisville, that makes a lot of sense. He's been really rising up boards. Daniel Jeremiah had him going forward to the Giants.
Starting point is 00:01:59 Tristan Wirfs of Iowa, I think makes an awful lot of sense here too. I think both those guys really fit their identity more so than the rest. Jedrick Wills from Alabama I don't think is going to be on the board. But I think really Wirfs of Iowa and Becton of Louisville are two guys I'd watch for if Anthony Costanza retires because they definitely fit the Colts' gritty, nasty way they're going with the offensive line. Just having aggressive guys up there with Quentin Nelson, Braden Smith, Mark Lewinsky, Ryan Kelly.
Starting point is 00:02:23 Throwing Becton orurfs into the mix there. I think that really gives you a solid, sturdy offensive line for the next decade if Costanza does retire. And I guarantee if Costanza does retire, that that will be climbing up to number one on the list of the offseason needs for the Colts, even above quarterback, because left tackle I think is two or three on that list as far as the most important positions in the NFL go.
Starting point is 00:02:43 Next question here from Pat as well, from Diego, excuse me. Should the Colts consider trading for Matt Stafford? It's an interesting question. I really do believe that if Stafford becomes available, they should kick the tires, of course, but I would not go any higher than a second round pick. I would go to 30-34. If the Lions would do 34, I would do that. I just don't trust Matthew Stafford as a long-term answer here.
Starting point is 00:03:07 He's 30. He has injury. I know he hasn't missed games due to injury until this year, but he has an injury history. He missed all of this year pretty much for the Lions. I just don't think after what happened to Andrew Luck and in the end what Peyton Manning with his neck, I just don't think the Colts should trust an injury quarterback
Starting point is 00:03:23 and see where it goes. I know Matt Stafford has a cannon arm. He'd be the kind of win-out quarterback that the Colts really would want because it would really vault them right into playoff contention again, maybe right in the division with Houston, with Deshaun Watson as a double-digit win team. But looking long-term here, the next decade, 15 years, I think I'd rather draft a quarterback. I'm really firmly in team draft, a Jordan Love, draft a Justin Herbert. Whoever Chris Bauer likes the most in this year's draft, I think you have to go in that direction because I just trust that sustainable success with the Colts you started with Payton
Starting point is 00:03:57 and with Andrew Luck, year after year, the Colts were winning games, not just fluky results. And that's what I want to see happen with the Colts. And I think going the draft right over, trading for a Matthew Stafford, or even signing a veteran free agency, I think is the way to go. I think drafting a quarterback and then sitting for a year, and then 2021, you have two drafts to go around that quarterback with an already win-now roster. I think that makes too much sense to me. Next question here is from Neil Riddell, and he says,
Starting point is 00:04:24 I do offseason side defensive tackle, either Chris Jones, Javon Hargrave, or DJ Reader. If one of the top two wide receivers fall in number 13, pick one of them. If you can't sign a defensive tackle, draft Javon Kinlaw. Try back in the first round to get Jordan Love. Thoughts? I like it a lot, Neil, I have to say. I think it makes definitely a lot of sense as far as the defensive tackle route, trading back up for Jordan Love. I just don't want to play the risky game.
Starting point is 00:04:48 If the Colts do really love Jordan Love, they have to take him at 13 because I don't think he's going to last to 34. There's no way at this point with how much his stock has risen. And I think if the Colts were to play that game of maybe packaging 34 and 75 to get up to the mid-20s to get ahead of New England and New Orleans. So I think it would take Jordan Love in that situation at 23 or 24. Maybe Oakland at 19, too, could be an option for him. But I think those are the only three options for him in the first round at that point.
Starting point is 00:05:15 It would be 19, 23, and 24. I just think even though it might be considered a reach, you don't do quote-unquote reaches with the quarterback because that's a franchise position. That's the guy who's making all the money for your organization. The one who's putting on your back to the playoffs from really all aspects. And I think the quarterback, there's no such thing as a reach for a quarterback because it turns out to be a good decision.
Starting point is 00:05:36 Then no one's gonna be complaining in the end. So I think it makes sense to go the route of trading back up for the first round for Jordan Love if they have the chance. So I think that part of it makes sense. But like I I said I would take him at 13 either way but if he does let's say they take Javon Kinlaw at 13 and then trade back up for Jordan Love that is indeed the dream scenario Colts fans I think Kinlaw plus Jordan Love my goodness that's two I think future Pro Bowl players at premium positions in on the Col, and that would definitely go a long way for them. And I think first priority, of course,
Starting point is 00:06:07 would be getting Chris Jones from the Chiefs. It's going to cost Aaron Donald money. For those who are wondering, Chris Jones will cost close to $20 million per year, according to many reports out there. And I would do that for Chris Jones. I'd sign along the lines of five years, $100 million. Do it right away.
Starting point is 00:06:23 He's right in the prime of his career. $100 million, I know it's a lot of money for a defensive tackle. Aaron Donald's making that kind of money. But Chris Jones, we saw in the Super Bowl what kind of an elite player he is, and throw him in the mix of the Colts. I think it does heavy damage to the opposing teams that the Colts would face if you toss him in with Darius Leonard, Justin Houston, etc. Next question here from Chris. What are your thoughts on the Colts acquiring Derek Carr I would love to see him or Teddy Bridgewater brought in and fill other needs through the draft see I'm not really much of a Derek Carr fan I don't know about you guys but
Starting point is 00:06:56 Carr is just like Jacober said to me he's a conservative quarterback never really takes any deep shots I know the one here he had a good offensive line in his second or third year in the NFL, an MVP candidate. I forget who it was in the Colts that broke his leg, but in that game against the Colts, he broke his leg, and the MVP chance went down the drain. He was, at that point of his career, I believe age 24. Now he's like age 29 or age 30 now.
Starting point is 00:07:21 So I think Carr, he's better than Bursette, but I think it's just not much of an upgrade. I know Jacoby was really bad in the second half of the season, and I'm on that train, of course, of Jacoby. Bursette should not be your starter much at all next year, but I just don't, I'm not really into getting up assets for a guy like Derek Carr. I just don't think it moves the needle much. I don't think Carr is a guy who can really do much in the system.
Starting point is 00:07:42 As far as like the cold ceiling, I don't think a race to a Super Bowl winner with Derek Carr. I just don't think that's the right move to make. And if Oakland doesn't think Derek Carr is the answer, I don't think the Colts would either. Because Derek Carr, I think, is just a middle-tier quarterback. And the Colts need a top-ten quarterback, top-five quarterback to get where they want to go. And that's a Super Bowl and winning multiple at that. Next question here is from Non-warrior to Warriors fan. Do the Colts trust
Starting point is 00:08:08 enough in Jacoby Bursette to trip and go for Jerry Judy in the first round? We struggled heavily last year leading the league in drops, and Michael Thomas having more catches than the entire team combined. Need T.Y. healthy and a solid second option like Judy would do the trick. I agree with you on Jerry Judy, but I don't think you need a trip for Jerry Judy,
Starting point is 00:08:24 especially a wide receiver in this year's draft. Daniel Jeremiah from Network said that there is 21 guys that he has first, second, or third round grades on this year. That's the most ever. 21 in the first 100 picks this year's draft is insane. That just shows you the value that the Colts could get on round two or round three for wide receiver. And I think that goes a long way towards probably what the Colts will do is getting the best value possible. And I expect a wide receiver on day two of this draft. But Jerry Judy, if he's available long way towards probably what the Colts will do is getting the best value possible and I expect a wide receiver on day two of this draft but Jerry Judy if he's available at 13 will give the Colts heavy consideration I think he is an elite wide receiver I think he steps in day one and really almost mirrors TY I think he put up a thousand
Starting point is 00:08:56 yards right away he's one of the best route runners that I've seen in a long time kind of the draft he's Odo Beckham ask as far as route running goes and explosiveness I still think I'd give CeeDee Lamb the edge as far as the top wide receiver in this draft, but Jerry Judy definitely fits the Colts system, and he would help out Jacoby a little bit, but I would hate to see Jerry Judy be wasted with a guy like Jacoby Brissett for a year or two or somehow longer because that would just be an awful way to go about it. But Jerry Judy, if he's on the board there, I think is definitely one of the top options for the Colts at 13. I would not be mad at all if they took Jerry Judy at 13. Starting point is 00:10:13 slash advertising. We look forward to hearing from you guys soon. Next question from Mike Green. Everyone talks about adding a partner besides T.Y. Hilton in the final year's deal. Is it really worth spending a high draft capital on a wide receiver with so much depth in the position to draft? How many pairs can one year two? Seems like QBO, line and defense are higher priority.
Starting point is 00:10:31 See, I just hit this on my point in the last question here. And Mike, you had the nail on the head as well. This year with the draft, there's so many good wide receivers in round two, round three. You can just do that on day two and take a quarterback like Jordan Love at 13 or take a defensive lineman like Javon Kinlaw at 13. I think that's the route they're going to go at this point. I really believe the Colts are down at two positions. They're considering a 13
Starting point is 00:10:53 and I would be surprised if anything else, maybe YRC we can toss in here too, but I think it's quarterback or defense tackle, whether it's Derrick Brown from Auburn if he somehow slips down to 13, Javon Kinlaw from South Carolina, or you go Justin Herbert or Jordan Love, a quarterback. I don't think Tua Tagovailoa is going to make the 13.
Starting point is 00:11:10 I will not be surprised if the Colts try to trade for Tua. I think he's perfect in the system. But Jordan Love and Justin Herbert are more than viable options at 13. I think they make an awful lot of sense in this system as well. So I agree with you, Mike. I would definitely be in the camp of waiting the draft receiver until day two and go get a quarterback in round one. That's an interesting question because this offseason is the most important Colts franchise history, or at least up there in my opinion. In the last 20 years, the Colts have had a quarterback in place for so long, and now they don't.
Starting point is 00:11:47 And Jacoby Brissett, of course, is not that answer. They need to find a new answer. And Chris Bauer has never had a draft quarterback before as the GM. He had a hand in Patrick Mahomes. He got hired a couple months before the draft for the Colts with Kansas City. He loved Mahomes. Maybe he thinks Jordan Love is that guy. That can make some sense.
Starting point is 00:12:03 But the biggest story, I think, going into this, obviously no one's talking about, is about this defense. I think it's the pass rush, Justin Houston. What's happening after Justin Houston? I know he's going to the final year of his contract. I know he expects the Colts to re-sign him. What's the future after them? Is it really Ben Banigou and is it Kamoko Ture? Can both those guys play three downs on opposite sides of each other? I think there's going to be something going on at the Ed's position. I don't think Jabal Sheard is going to return. He's 30 years old this year, probably looking for one last payday. I think Edge is going to be one of the more intriguing positions to follow this offseason
Starting point is 00:12:34 because they could make a splash in free agency like Yannick Ngakwe or Jadeveon Clowney. I think if you're going to spend some money, I think going all in on Edge to pair with Justin Houston, Kamoko Ture, and Ben Banigou, I think that's the way to go about it because you need to spend some money. This offense and the Colts have close to $100 million in cap space. Go all out if you're Chris Bauer. Get an impact defensive lineman, and that would help out a ton for this Colts team.
Starting point is 00:12:56 Next up here is from Mook. My question is if we spend money in free agency and stay the same as in record, overall players, nobody doing anything special. When will everyone be held accountable and changes are made? I know Kevin Bowen over at Kevin's Corner. We have Kevin on all the time on the podcast. He's had this on his show. There are a lot of questions his way about when we should have Chris Bowden
Starting point is 00:13:17 and Frank Reich in the hot seat. That's tough because the quarterback position is in flux right now. You can't really blame them. Jacoby Bristet started the first three years at Chris Bouds been a GM. So he's been in a really tough spot. And I would say three to five years. I know it's a really long leash there, but I think this,
Starting point is 00:13:33 this coach and this GM is elite as a combo. And I would give them as much time as possible. I would say minimum three more years to give them at least some clearance as far as what the future could be and where this team is. I think three years is well off, but five years, I think makes a lot of sense with how young this roster is. So I'd say three to five years. And I think Colts fans who are concerned about Frank Reich and Chris Bowers job security should not be because they're going to be around for a very, very long time in the 2020s, I feel like. So I would not even say either of them are on the
Starting point is 00:14:02 hot seat right now. And our next batch of questions here. First one up is from Chad B. Ash Fatter Chatter. How screwy are the Colts if Costanza retires? If he does, should they use the 13th pick to try to replace him? Like I mentioned at the top of the show in our first question, I think Mekhi Becton and Tristan Wurst make a ton of sense at 13 if that's the route they go if Costanza retires.
Starting point is 00:14:23 Round two, there is left tackles available like Austin Jackson of USC, Lucas Nying of TCU, Prince Tego Winogo of Auburn. There's definitely options available for this Colts team and Trey Adams too of Washington on day three makes some sense. He used to actually Chris Josh used to coach him at Washington so that's a connection. Ezra Cleveland of Boise State is another option there on day three. So they have options on day one, day two, and day three of this draft for contingency plans of Anthony Costanza. But I think either way, the Colts have to draft a left tackle in the future. Because if Costanza does come back, you can't guarantee he's here for five more years. You can maybe guarantee he's here for one, two more years tops.
Starting point is 00:15:00 And you see after that. So for left tackle, I would probably wait until round two if possible, but if it's a huge need and if they feel like Becton or Wirfs or either one of those guys at the top of the draft makes sense in a trade-up possibly, then I'm all for it. Next question here is from John Custis. What is the ideal free-and-see trade quarterback scenario if you had to take one?
Starting point is 00:15:21 In this scenario, I'm going to also assume, John, that we're taking a quarterback at 13. So I would say to take Jordan Love at 13 and you sign Phillip Rivers for a one or two-year contract as the bridge for $20 million a year. So two years, $40 million, not much guaranteed money in year two for Phillip Rivers if he does retire. I think this makes a ton of sense, to be honest, because pairing Rivers with Jordan Love having a 38-year-old quarterback show love the ropes who is an all-time great I don't know if Hall of Famer is a question for Rivers I know it's gonna be heavily debated here when he retires but
Starting point is 00:15:54 I think the way that Rivers is able to be aggressive down the field I know he makes mistakes but I think Frank Wright could really help out both not only Rivers and Love and Rivers as a mentor for Love is light years better than Jacoby Brissett. I just don't want Jacoby Brissett as a mentor for any quarterback at this point, just with how subpar he is as a bottom five quarterback in PFF grades each of the last two full years he's started. So we know what he is at this point. He's one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL, statistically and on an events metric standpoint.
Starting point is 00:16:21 So if they can trade Jacoby Bursette and sign Phillip Rivers, I would be all for that on a one- or two-year deal. Draft Jordan Love at 13, I think you're set for sustained success with the Colts, and that's what this franchise desperately needs to get back to. If I had to pick one there, I'd go Phillip Rivers and draft Jordan Love. Next up here from Aaron at AaronCD18, if you're the Colts GM, would you trade up to draft Tua? Absolutely. If Tua Tagovailoa is on the you're the Colts GM, would you trade up to draft Tua? Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:16:45 If Tua Tagovailola is on the table for the Colts, I would give up anything to get Tua Tagovailola because I think he's the best quarterback in this draft. That's a hot take, I know, if you're listening to this. But I think fully healthy Tua is better than fully healthy Joe Burrow. I'll state that right now. I think if you threw Tua in Joe Brady's offense, he would have done more than Joe Burrow.
Starting point is 00:17:04 And I think Tua as a lefty is a unique combo. You won't have to really worry much about Anthony Costanza at that point. Braden Smith would be his blind side, which I think he graded out as one of the best right tackles per PFF this year. So I think it makes an awful lot of sense to go up and get Tua Tagovailola because he fits perfectly in Frank Reich's RPO system. He has the offensive line in place. He has the weapons. He can draft some more. You have T.Y. Hilton.
Starting point is 00:17:29 You have a young ascending defense. You can add more pieces to him for A&C. He can go out on that side of the ball too. Tua would immediately make this team a double-digit win team and make them a division title contender. And dare I say, if they had Tua Tagovailola starting in the year 2021, if Jacoby Brissett started all next year just to let Tua get fully healthy from his hip injury. I think this team is a suitable contender for a year Tua starting.
Starting point is 00:17:50 So I'll just come out and say that. So I am in love with Tua Tagovailola as a prospect. I think the Dolphins are over. Let's get them. I think they're going to be a perennial contender with Tua quarterback. So if the Colts have any chance of getting Tua, I'm all for it. Just a reminder, if you have not already subscribed to Locked on Colts, the only

Starting point is 00:18:26 Rate, review, and subscribe to Locked on Colts, the only daily Colts podcast. Next question here from Edward J. Ormsby. What is your evaluation of Jacob Eason? Can we get him in the second round? Eason's a tough one. He definitely has a strong arm. He reminds me an awful lot of a guy like Jameis just as far as he is a radical decision making at points inconsistent with his ball placement sometimes but the power
Starting point is 00:18:54 and velocity of his arm is certainly there I think that that kind of relationship maybe Eason goes to the Buccaneers in round one or maybe he goes them in round two or somewhere else but I think you need to really mold him, and I think Frank Reich with Eason, that's probably his best shot at becoming an elite quarterback, is with a guy like Frank Reich, because Reich would be able to scam up an offense. He did what Jacoby Bursette this year, at least make an average offense. He didn't want Jacoby
Starting point is 00:19:16 to be a quarterback. And if you had Eason's arm strength, I think that would definitely change this offense completely from being a check-down offense to a deep-threat offense, and I think you'd add a lot more playmakers on the outside for like Eason. So I think he'll definitely, I think he'll be there at 34. If the Colts do go, let's say Javon Kinlaw or someone else on the defensive line, best player available at 13.
Starting point is 00:19:36 I think going the route of Eason makes sense at 34. If Chris Ballard and Frank Reck have the conviction that Jacob Eason is their franchise quarterback for the next 10, 15 years, because if not he's not going to be on the Colts if so. Next question here from John. How should the Colts fans feel about Chris Ballard? He has a couple of great picks but also a lot of misses. I'm a fan of Chris Ballard. He's done an amazing job flipping this roster from where Ryan Grixen had it beforehand.
Starting point is 00:20:00 One of the bottom five worst rosters in the NFL, and I believe they're now top five as far as rosters in the NFL go. His quarterback makes a lot of difference in the world. Andrew Luck, the Coltsman, won the Super Bowl this year if he's playing. Jacoby Brissett, one of the worst corrects in the NFL. Coltsman and I am in the playoffs, so that just goes to show how important that position is. Chris Bowers has done an awesome job with this roster. He's overhauled it completely with draft picks,
Starting point is 00:20:21 making savvy free-and-tie signings like Justin Houston. I know Devin Funk just did not work out this year, but he got hurt in the first game of the year. He hasn't missed much on free-and signings like Justin Houston. I know Devin Fung just did not work out this year, but he got hurt in the first game of the year. He hasn't missed much on free-ante signings. He hasn't missed much on the draft. And then Quincy Wilson, Taequann Lewis look really bad in hindsight. But if you get one bad draft pick per year, but you also get three or four or five good ones in the process,
Starting point is 00:20:40 I would do that each time. And that's kind of what Chris Bauer is batting right now. And 2020 is one of the most important drafts for the Colts because you have a lot of ammunition if you want to trade for a quarterback, but also three picks in the top 50, four in the top 75, and almost five in the top 100. So Colts can do a lot of damage in this year's draft, and it can really overhaul this team.
Starting point is 00:20:58 And I trust Chris Bauer, and I think a lot of Colts fans should too. Thoughts on Anthony Gordon here from atstopfadehatingslimthug4040. I'm not much of Colts fans should too. Thoughts on Anthony Gordon here from atstopthatingslimthug4040. I'm not much of a fan of Anthony Gordon. I would be really disappointed if the Colts took him in day two or day three of the draft. I know Gardner Minshew did well at Washington State, but I think that's one special case that Gardner Minshew's doing well.
Starting point is 00:21:20 I'm not much of a fan of Anthony Gordon being anything more than a high-end backup in this league, like a Jacoby Brissett-type ceiling. He's not a franchise quarterback to me. I know some on Colts Twitter are really into Anthony Gordon. Maybe I'll watch more if someone can convince me out there why I should watch more tape of Anthony Gordon. But I just don't see much as far as elite talent. I want an elite quarterback with special traits.
Starting point is 00:21:42 And I want to see if I beat Patrick Mahomes in these matches for the next 10-15 years. Who is the quarterback that can beat Patrick Mahomes for the next decade? That's what the Colts need, and that's not Anthony Gordon. Free-ante sleeper. This is what Ethan Oso24 asked. Is a free-ante sleeper like a Danico Autry pulled off a couple years ago? That's a good question. I think Shelby Harris. If we want to stay with the defensive line for a second,
Starting point is 00:22:07 I think Shelby Harris, the Broncos defensive tackle, is one that makes sense. He is a guy that bats a lot of passes down. He's disruptive as a three-tech for Denver. He's bounced around the league a little bit with Denver. I think he was in Cleveland for a year or two, if I'm not mistaken. But he's definitely found his form in Denver the last couple years. He became a pro-baller, a defense tackle, and he is one of the guys who I think makes, from Chris Ballard's standpoint,
Starting point is 00:22:32 a guy who probably doesn't break the bank, but he's an impact player. I would say Shelby Harris, also Javon Hargrave of the Steelers, playing the same position in defense tackle. I think those are two guys to watch for the Colts there if they don't go Chris Jones or a high-end defense tackle, or if they don't have their eyes on Javon Kinlar or someone else in the draft at that position. I think a guy like Hargrave from the Steelers or Shelby Harris from the Broncos are two guys you should watch out for Colts fans. I think either way, the Colts are going to put a heavy investment into the three technique this offseason
