The Indianapolis Colts are officially younger and faster on defense. Let's get to it.

Hello, everyone.
Good evening right now.
It is almost midnight while Jake and I are going live to talk about day two of the
26 NFL draft.
We're going to round out the conversation today talking about the best available and where
the Colts go after day two.
But the bulk of the conversation on today's reaction podcast will be reacting to those
two picks by the Indianapolis Colts.
C.J. Allen, the linebacker of Georgia in round two.
and then Jake's boy, AJ Halsey, the safety from LSU in round three.
So we're going to save Jake's conversation, obviously, for round three there for the second
segment.
But to kick it all off, Jake, the Colts did what we all expected in round two.
They traded back.
They moved back with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
You know, you and I, when we're doing all of our final mock drafts, I told you
multiple times, I was like, I keep circling the Steelers because they have like 20 picks
in this draft.
So they were a logical destination for the Colts to move back, move back those six.
Spock picked up an extra fourth rounder for tomorrow, as well as moving up a little bit in round
seven.
And then they get a linebacker that I had as a top 30 player, top 35 player in this draft.
Absolutely love the film, very young player, green dot guy who ran that Georgia defense.
I'm excited about this pick, man.
We didn't talk about him enough on this show throughout the pre-draft process because I thought
it was a foregone conclusion that he was going to go in like round one or early, early
round two. I tried to get some mentions late in the process on here, but yeah, I'm pumped about this
pick. This is a guy. I mean, I would have taken him. We talked all all season about Rodriguez and Anthony
Hill. I had him over both of those guys. So to get him at 53 after a tradeback, oh, man, I'm over
the moon with this selection. Yeah, I did a little episode earlier in the week before the draft started
on guys who could slip to the Colts, and he was the cover boy for that episode. So we did, I guess,
get the hype machine for him going a little bit.
Now, I'll be honest.
Like, if you guys have heard me talk about C.J. Allen, like, I'm not the biggest fan.
I do like that they got a starting level linebacker out of this.
Like, I think he's still a decent player.
I just wanted more out of that pick.
When I compare him to, like, Anthony Hill Jr., for example, I think there's more there.
But, you know, Jacob Rodriguez was already gone.
I think Josiah Trotter was already gone as well.
So this wasn't a bad pick by any means.
I'm a little skeptical.
Alan is played in 41 games, but has very little like ball production.
And the tape I did see now, I don't remember which game I watched,
but it could have been post-injury for him.
So number one, I'm very eager to get back and watch way more of him
to see over the years what kind of player he really became.
because I want to give him a fair shake, obviously,
but I do have a little skepticism about his aggressiveness
and playmaking ability,
aggressiveness and attacking.
Because my understanding is, you know,
he's a pretty violent player.
You know,
Chris Ballard said he was a smart player,
violent player.
I already knew he was a leader.
He's exactly what you would hope to get out of like a Georgia Mike linebacker
who's going to lead your defense,
call the defense.
fast athletic guy.
So I think that part of it's really good.
And he just doesn't make a lot of mistakes.
You know what I mean?
If you're just kind of replacing Zyre Franklin with Zyre Franklin,
I think you're getting a cleaner version of it.
Yeah.
With someone who is hopefully a little more adept in coverage.
So I don't, I don't hate the pick.
It just wasn't necessarily my favorite.
But now I am eager to get back and watch more of it.
Yeah, I will say he is an attacker on film.
That's what I always saw.
It's what really popped out to me.
he just flies all over the football field.
I mean, 4-4-7 speed, and he did that with a bit of a busted meniscus still.
So he was still recovering from the injured meniscus.
And I think you see it on film.
He flows to the ball exceptionally well.
I think he is a good physical thumper against the run.
Like, it's not to Josiah Trotter's level where Trotter is just rag-dalling, opposing offensive linemen.
But it's certainly better than like Anthony Hill or Jacob Rodriguez, right,
where those guys have to run.
run around offensive linemen or they're not making a play on the ball in the running game where
with alan he's he can run through a guy's chest you know he has that power he has that explosion
and that willingness to do it which is what made him such a higher linebacker prospect for me than
like those guys because i think that's such a valuable thing to have it a mike linebacker when
you have a mic or linebacker that has to run around blocks you get a lot of zire franklin the last
couple years right where a lot of what he was doing is running around that's
why I hated. I saw some people saying, oh, we just got a younger Zire Franklin. I'm like,
no, no, no, no, this guy runs through players. Franklin, good player. Like, I don't, I still think
Franklin's better than what the thought process was with him. But Franklin has to run around
offensive lineman, and then he's an inconsistent tackler where with Allen, he's going to run
through a guy's chest. And he had a very low mistackle rate in college. I mean, last year, I think
was one of the higher years from it. It was like over 7%. And that was,
most good. Yeah, and that was mostly because when the knee tear happened or the meniscus tear
happened, he started missing a couple more tackles and started being a little bit slower to the
ball because he tried to play through a meniscus tear for his team late last season because
he was that kind of leader for them. So I, yeah, I'm a huge fan of this. I think he's going to be a
really good player. I think he is the type of player you want in the middle of your defense.
And honestly, like, when you watch his, like when you watch his coverage, I don't think it's
bad like all linebackers and coverage are bad right unless it's Kyle Lewis who is a safety
playing linebacker right like he's not a he's not a linebacker he's a safety playing linebacker
that guy can cover but outside of that most linebackers can't cover so what I'm looking for is
an athletic player that can roll over in in play action and find crossers behind him who can get
some depth on his hook zones and locate guys behind him I think that stuff is is all I'm really looking
for and I think he projects really well for that. I would compare him to like a Jordan Brooks type of
player. I mean, Jordan Brooks was kind of a similar type of mole coming out of college. He got even
better in coverage in the NFL. I think he can be that level of player in the NFL. So,
man, getting him at 53. I like when the Colts traded back, I was like, okay, you can get like a
goal day who I think is fine. You can get any of these other linebackers, like even Hill, right, who I wasn't
as high on, but I liked Hill a lot. I was like, cool. You can get one of those guys to
53 because there's no way that Allen's going to fall to you there.
When Allen was still there at 53, man, and they took them, that's, I mean, again,
I guess teams were just a bit scared of that meniscus.
I'd be shocked if it holds him out of OTAs at this point.
Did Chris Ballard say anything about that at all in the presser?
I mean, I know that Allen didn't do a lot of like pre-draft workout stuff, but he recently ran
a 40s, so I imagine he's going to be ready to roll.
He didn't say that he's not going to.
So if he's out there running 40s and stuff for teams, then he's probably going to
be fine. Yeah, I still think there's a little bit of recovery left, but he should be good to go.
So, yeah, I don't know what held teams back, man. He's young, too. Like, he's not one of these older
players. I'm excited for him, man. I think this is exactly what they needed in the middle of,
in the middle of their defense. So getting him, not having to worry about linebacker now,
Mike linebacker, awesome stuff. I think it was great work by the Colts. And to get a fourth
rounder on top of it, really excellent work by Chris Ballard. Yeah, I mean,
that that is kind of an unspoken part of it is that they were able to get a guy who is often projected late in the first round and get an extra pick out of it with the fourth round pick, especially with some of the talent that's on the board, which we'll talk about shortly.
But I do appreciate that the Colts have conviction about this.
Chris Ballard does not normally crown guys right away, but he, without officially saying it, said that C.J. Allen is going to be their starting Mike linebacker, like right away.
He said he's going to be the green dot for them right off the bat or however he phrased it.
But meaning the Colts, you know, are going into this, I assume, with the King Davis Gather and C.J. Allen as their starting linebackers.
I just, I really want to see what he's like as a blitzer, you know, through the A gap like we saw with Zaire Franklin quite a bit.
And then just what his feel and coverage is with allowing crossers behind him, like you had mentioned.
because that was just such a problem last year.
But with Franklin and Pratt, it's not like it was just Franklin.
Like they both were bad in coverage.
So to have a young explosive linebacker who has some sort of feel and coverage
and is able to, I think, quickly get into the backfield when he's sent on a blitz,
which Lou loves to do, I think that could be a pretty good look for the Colts.
Yeah, my two things I'll say to that real quick is if you want to see,
see some blitzing watch his Auburn tape.
That was really fun tape. And there's a really good blitz rep in there where he's so
faster the A gap that he gets a sack within like like 0.8 seconds in that game.
And then my second one that kind of segues into our second segment,
if you're worried about crossers and over the middle field,
over the middle of the field plays, Jake, don't worry.
They have a safety that now can make plays in coverage, a strong safety that can make
some plays in coverage.
So coming up, I'm just going to give the floor to Jake.
And we're going to talk all about AJ Halsey yet again.
Our second time devoting a whole segment to AJ Halsey on this show this off season.
We're going to talk about him in just a second.

All righty, Locked on Colts Everydayers, we are back talking all about the Colts day two picks.
We talked all about C.J. Allen, the linebacker from Georgia to kick off this show.
But now we're going to talk all about A.J. Halsey, the pick of the off season,
the guy that Jake has been all about.
Before we get into that, though, don't forget to check out the Everydayer Club for ad-free episodes and access to a group chat with me, Jake and other listeners of the show.
We were talking throughout the entire draft, me, and the everydayers in there.
So tap the link in the show notes or go to LockdownColts.com.
Now, Jake, AJ Halsey, I think, like, it's funny, both of these guys that the Colts took.
I don't know if you asked us a week ago if we thought either of them would even be there at 47, right?
And even if Halsey was there at 47, it's like, a bit of a luxury pick taking him that high.
For the Colts to give him at 78, a player that you had a safety for in this class, you had such a high grade on him.
In the indie draft guide, he was a 17th overall player in the indie draft guide.
Maybe that's because the rest of us hated all of our players and you actually liked AJ Halsey.
That might be what it was.
But to get him where they got him, I mean, I love this fit next to Cameron Bindam.
let you gush real quick, but then I'll talk about why I like it.
I was watching film right before he jumped on, and I'm excited about this pick, man.
Yeah, no, I actually had him above Emmanuel McNeill Warren, so he was my third safety.
Oh, safety three.
Okay, safety three.
I held him in really high regard.
So just right off the bat, you know, when he gets off the bus, he looks apart.
Six foot, 215, he's stocky and muscle.
He's just a thickly built dude.
Still a youngish player at 22 years old.
he's a self-made guy, which I always really like, started out at New Mexico,
transferred up to Houston, transferred up to LSU, started in all three places,
was, you know, either like an all-conference or all-American level player,
everywhere he went.
So he's accrued a lot of experience over that time, too,
which is one of the ways the Colts are able to get these like day two picks that contribute so quickly
is because they played a ton of football, which he has.
And so right off the bat, if you're looking for a role for Halsey,
he has been a core special team's contributor for four years.
That already is a foot in the door,
and that's going to endear the Colts to him pretty quickly.
He has played all over the place.
I think he's got the athleticism to play up high and down low.
He brings the aggressiveness and physicality to play in the box.
Chris Ballard did not want to kind of pigeonhole him into just directly being Nick Cross's replacement at strong safety.
He said he could play up high and in the box.
I think the thing is that they don't want to have such defined free safety, strong safety roles.
They want guys who can go out there and they don't have to sub them off the field.
I think that's what he meant by that.
I do still expect Halsey to get like the first leg up at strong.
starting next to find him.
But they do love Hunter Roller.
They're still probably going to have a role for him.
Juan Ye Thomas.
They'll try and figure something out with that as well.
But Halsey is the versatile kind of player that they really are shooting for here.
Over 1,300 career snaps up high, over 1,000 in the box, and then 369 in the slot as well.
I think the guy really understands what he's seeing in front of him.
He's got good feel and zone coverage as well.
Clicks and closes very, very quickly.
And again, he is usually going for a big hit.
When he's coming downhill, he is absolutely going to make you feel it.
Now, those kind of physical downhill tacklers coming all the way from safety,
they often do kind of come with their hiccups when it comes to tackle assurance.
His mistackle rate from the last two years, a little bit too high at 15,
point one percent that is something that can kind of get cleaned up and you can get more under
control and everything i especially think being able to key in on special teams helps that a little
bit as well um but just overall a versatile guy who has the range to play up high the frame and
physicality to play in the box and then just the smarts to never have to leave the field and that
next to cam bine him like you mentioned zach incredibly invaluable
You got now two safeties who understand what the offense is doing.
So it's pretty rare that these guys are going to get fooled out of what you're doing.
And they both have really good ball skills as well.
That's the thing.
Halsey can take the ball away from you.
He's always been very productive.
Ten career interceptions and 19 career pass breakups.
As a true freshman at New Mexico, he had a 24 tackle game.
Again, as a true freshman, that is just alarmingly good.
So I love a guy like that.
Like Dylan Theanman was pretty similar to me.
Like a guy, you dropped him off there at Purdue as a true freshman,
and he's just ultra-uber-productive right away.
It's kind of the same vibe you're getting with A.J. Halsey here.
Yeah, no, for sure.
Watching A.J. Halsey film tonight, and I think if anyone wants to get really excited about this,
watch his Oklahoma film.
The Oklahoma film is just incredible.
from start to finish.
I don't know why PFF had him with zero pass breakups.
I counted like three in that game.
I don't know where they got their pass breakups.
He's aggressive of it going after the ball, yeah.
Yeah, he had three pass breakups and an interception in that game.
A couple other really cool coverage reps.
I just love his eyes in zone coverage.
He's a safety where he doesn't cover grass, right?
He'll get to his spot and then he'll understand the route concept that's coming his way,
and he'll relate to that threat that is coming into his zone and break on the
ball now there is some hit and miss with that like there were a couple plays where
he's so tuned in on what the offense what he thinks the offense is trying to do that he can
get fooled by you know late releases from tight ends or some issues some things like that that uh
yeah yeah where he gets caught looking at the next play when the previous one is already
moving around still so there's some there's some hot and cold with him as a player but he takes
the football away he makes plays on the ball and that's something the colts haven't had at
strong safety in a while right like nick cross you would get the
one or two flashy plays a season, but the down-to-down consistency and coverage wasn't there.
And I think the area that I'm extremely excited about with him is the Colts run so much cover
one robber, right? It's one of their favorite third down calls. And so cover one robber,
if you guys don't know what it is, it's man coverage across the board, free safety over the top,
strong safety is playing that hooked zone over the middle of the field and robbing in breaking
routes. And with Cross doing that, it was kind of like a guy in the middle of the field, right?
So what they had to do is they put Bynum as the robber and had Rodney Thomas over the top, right, as the free safety, which is fine, right?
Because Bynum has that good feel in the middle.
But now you can keep your true free safety over the top and you can have Halsey being that robber where I think he's probably even better than Bynum in that Robert role, right?
Because he's got such a good feel for routes that are coming his way.
I'm not as high on Halsey as you are because some of the run defense scares me.
I like they need to get him into a tackling camp to stop throwing his head first into a lot of these tackles.
Like I'm terrified he's going to get paralyzed with some of the ways that he tackles with his head first.
But big body guy flies downhill.
I think he takes good angles in the run game.
It's just sometimes throwing too much of his body first.
Not right.
Yeah.
Not wrapping up and throwing your body around.
Right.
A little bit reckless.
But the eyes and coverage are great.
I think he's going to be an A1 zone defender, a ball, a ball hawk, right?
We talked about this where, like, if you're moving on from Kenny Moore and you don't have Zey or Franklin anymore, outside of Bynum, who's taking the football away for your defense?
Right.
They needed another guy who could take the football away.
And that's exactly what we get here with a player like Halsey.
So they got two safeties now that I think take the football away at a very high level.
There will, again, there will be some hot and cold with that, some big play mistakes that happened.
But you're also going to get some big plays made by him as well, taking that football away.
So I love this fit, man.
I think you lose a little bit in run defense compared to Nick Cross,
but I think overall you upgrade your defense with this change at strong safety
because it makes your coverage so much better,
because it makes your ability to take the football away so much better.
So I think pivoting from cross to Halsey was a pretty darn good move, man.
Yeah, I think like if your linebackers are better in run defense,
then you don't have to have Nick Cross play such an important role like you did, you know?
But now with this switchout, you're probably going to get far, you know, far less mental mistakes and coverage.
Because as much as we like Nick Cross, because I don't want this to be a word dogging on Nick Cross thing because I do still really like him.
But when there was a miscue in coverage that led to like a touchdown in the passing game for the opponent, I feel like Cross was usually involved in that.
And Halsey just has so much better of an understanding of what's going on by the opponent's passing game that I think you're going to get.
fewer of those. So it's sacrificed a little bit in the run game, but you're going to be better for
it in the past. Yeah. And look, even though they're running the ball a little bit more in the NFL,
it's still a passing league and taking the football away is so vital. So I'm excited for what he's
going to bring. I'm excited for what CJ Allen's going to bring the Colts next season to players that
we were both very high on. I mean, CJ Allen was my third rated linebacker and Halsey was your
third rated safety. So we're pretty high on these two guys. Getting them both outside the top 50. It's
pretty much. Yeah, very excited about what they can bring. But there's still one more day of the draft left.
The Colts have six more draft picks as of right now. And they do have at least some more
conversations to be had about Kenny Moore and Anthony Richardson in terms of the trade market.
So they could get more. So coming up, we're going to talk about some of those players still
available. And then also talk about potential moves for Richardson or for Kenny that could happen
tomorrow. The NFL draft, we are in the midst of it. It is happening right now this weekend.
and every pick is a tradable moment on Colchie.
David Bailey versus Arvel Reese, rat number two.
That was such a big, you know, a moment that everyone seemed to have some sort of opinion on.
They were deadlocked 50-50 going into it.
I know linebacker, how many were going to go in the first round?
Was it two plus, three-plus?
You know, Arvel Reese and Sunny Stiles would Jacob Rodriguez sneak in there?
Those were some bets that really had people moving the market over there on call.
over the last couple days.
And on Colchie, you're trading against peers in a live market, meaning there's no house.
And as the probability changes, you can buy in and out of your position.
Trade the draft pick on the game, you know, all of that and more on Colchie.
For a limited time, download the Call She app and use code locked on to get $10 when you trade 10.
K-A-L-S-H-I.
Call-She, trade on anything.
All right.
welcome back every dayers.
Thank you for the hundreds of you that are with us after midnight right now.
You guys are sickos.
You love the draft.
We relate to you guys so much.
So we appreciate you being here with us.
So there is still, you know, a little bit of a to-do list for the Colts tomorrow.
Aside from just like the positions they need to address,
I'm going to be a little disappointed if we get out of the draft and you still have Anthony
Richardson and Kenny Moore hanging around.
On the trade block.
Now, it seems like no matter what, Kenny Moore is not going to be a cult next year.
I think the Colts are very willing to grant him a release if nothing comes about in the trade market.
Richardson, I think it's a little more flexible.
So I don't want to say it's pointless, but it's kind of pointless to keep him around.
So even if you have to suck it up and take the Michael Putman Jr. trade package, just go and get something.
And, you know, so that's two big trades that you got out there that, again, you're getting day three value, obviously, because we're coming up on day three.
So you're not going to get, you know, maybe this high value that you really wanted.
But just go ahead and pull the trigger and get something done, right?
Yeah, I'm not sure if they're going to get anything for Kenny just because it's a $10 million contract still.
It just makes it difficult.
Yeah, so I think you could just cut them after the draft.
I think it's probably what's going to happen there, which is, which is,
fine. I don't think that he's the bigger distraction right now, but I do think they got to move Anthony
Richardson at some point tomorrow, even if they had to bite the bullet and take a lesser package,
just move off of him and move on with your life, you know, and get whatever you can from him.
So I do expect Richardson to be moved tomorrow. We'll see ultimately where and what it is,
but I'd probably expect that to happen. So we'll see how many picks the Colts end up with.
But looking at the board right now, Jake, I think wide receiver has to be at the top of
the list going into tomorrow with round four where they have two picks pick 113 and i think it's what
one 21 i believe is the other pick they got in or 125 i think is what now you're putting me on
the spot i got to get my chart up there but yeah it's what it's like 135 and yeah yeah yeah so
113 and 135 is what they have there i think at that 113 spot looking at wide receiver makes
the most sense uh for the colts skyler bell still on the board and bryce lance uh too
extremely explosive fast players that fit the mold.
And then if you just want a guy who, you know, a little of a bucket getter,
not the fastest player in the world, missed almost every athletic trait that the Colts
usually look for.
But Indiana wide receiver Elijah Serrat as well is still on the board.
So I think these guys can play snaps for you next season.
I don't think they're going to be like legit like long term starters or anything,
but I think they can play snaps for you.
I mean, Skylar Bell, I'm very high on, obviously.
but Sarat and Lance, I think they can play some snaps for you as well.
So I think targeting one of those guys, especially if they're there, make a lot of sense.
But there's also some players we really like still available too.
Like, Grayson Halton is one of my favorite players in the draft, the defensive tackle from Oklahoma.
I don't know how well he fits the Colts, but I'd love him here.
And then Darrell Jackson, Jr., a guy you've been really high on throughout the whole process.
Those guys still on the board, like, I'm pretty excited about those guys for sure.
Yeah, the guys I would be just excited.
static to be Colts tomorrow.
I think Skyler Bell at this point, it's like absolutely by any means, why wouldn't you?
Danie Dennis Sutton is such an obvious one.
Darrell Jackson Jr., like you mentioned, Kyle Lewis is like my favorite player in the draft.
So by any means necessary, get that guy in a horseshoe.
And then there's some of these big slots we've talked about as well.
Guys who maybe their home position is safety, but really they translate.
to with the big nickel spots.
So while you already did get Halsey, he's going to be more of a safety up high down low.
These guys are going to be more movable pieces in the nickel and the dime.
But that's Camari Ramsey, Jalen Kilgore, and Vijay Payne.
We've talked about all three of them quite a bit.
So I'm pretty pumped with the fact that you've got multiple picks coming up in this next round.
And you've got a lot of guys who are really interested.
treating. Yeah, no, I mean, BJ Jane, we're in the range now where you can move
to outside corner. I've been talking about this all draft cycle. It's getting an outside
corner, baby, with those measurables. But, yeah, I think he'd be really fun out there. Demetrius
Crownover is still there at offensive tackle. They want another Jalen Travis type. I think he can make
a lot of sense. Yeah, Keontes Scott and Keith Abney, two guys we both really like as well at
Nickel Corner. So I think there's a lot of talent on the board. And I still think if I'm the Colts,
I don't, maybe they don't think this anymore because they got a player like C.J. Allen.
I still want to see them double dip at linebacker.
I do too for sure.
And I think a guy like Jack Kelly, who I've talked about a lot throughout the process,
makes so much sense for them, Kelly out of, out of BYU.
So they can get him in like the fifth round or wherever they need to take him.
I think he'd be awesome for them.
So a lot of talent on the board.
I do think though early on like wide receiver or trenches, you know,
So if you can O-line, D-Line or wide receiver is here with the fourth round picks.
If one of Bell, Sarat, or Lance are there at 113, I think run the card in.
If not, give me defensive tackle, edge or offensive line, baby.
Like, build me some more trenches because they already got, you know, you already
took the luxury positions, right?
The linebacker and safety, give me some big boys, you know, give me some 320 plus pound guys
if you can't get that.
So I think, yeah, I think there's a lot of.
options here. I will say this, though. I don't hate if they don't take an edge rusher. I talked about
this a couple times, Jake, where it's like, if you don't take an edge rusher in round two,
I'd be fine bypassing the position and just signing a guy after the draft because what are you getting
out of a edge rusher in round four? You know, like, what are you getting in year one out of that guy?
Like, I'm honestly, what are you even getting long term out of that guy? A fourth round edge rusher,
you know, so. It doesn't happen a lot.
Right, right.
Chris was asked about, you know, at this point, do you think you might just go get a free agent after the draft?
And he said there were some guys still out there in these next few rounds that have some juice.
You know, denied Dennis Sutton, obviously George Gums Jr., Nadame Tucker, you know, Nigelic Kelly.
Those are some guys that make sense to me on day three that if what juice is what Chris Ballard's
looking for. I think those guys make a little bit of sense. But right now we're looking at value,
man. There's several guys here who we thought would go in the third round that we wanted to be
taken in the third round who are still here. You know, those DBs I mentioned. But receiver really
seems like a good opportunity. Shoot, there's running backs out there right now. Like Mike Washington
from Arkansas is a guy who outside of the top two probably had the most
you know, the was the most talked about running back coming into this whole thing.
He's out there, Jonah Coleman, if you want a big-bodied guy who might be able to pass pro a little bit.
A lot of people are fans of Emmett Johnson.
So there's a lot of intrigue out there right now, man.
But yeah, I think Skyler Bell is a guy you got to secure because you need that receiver.
Like, you haven't done it yet.
And this is a guy who's an elite separator.
He gets the yak that Shane said he wants.
it makes all the sense in the world.
Yeah, no, for sure.
So we'll see where the Colts ultimately go with this tomorrow.
A lot of options still on the board.
