Today we're going to be running through our typical Friday preview show.
We're going to dive into the last injury report of the week,
how there could be some guys coming back for the Colts,
which could be pretty exciting.
We're going to talk about the offense versus Jackso- Jaguar's defense.
We're going to talk about the Jaguars' offense versus the Colts defense.
and then we're going to close it out with some final thoughts in this absolute must-win divisional
game for the Colts on Sunday as they head to Jacksonville to face the co-leaders of the division
the Jacksonville Jaguars. But first, let's talk about this latest injury report here.
There have been some updates throughout the week. One expected guy that is out this week is
Saus Gardner. He is still dealing with that calf injury. The Colts did not place him on an injury
reserve. So he could be back before that four weeks. That's why you don't place them on that
reserve, obviously. But he's not going to play this week. We'll see if he gets in a practice or two
next week and go from there. But outside of that, no other player was ruled out for the Colts.
The only two players that are questionable are Tyquan Lewis at Defensive End and Jalen Carlis at
linebacker. Now, with Carlis, he did log full practices all week. And this is the final week the
Colts have to where they have to activate him or he can't play in a game this season.
So in my opinion, and this is just my outside opinion, I'm not in the room.
I'm not Shane Steichen or anything like that.
I believe he's going to be activated in the next 24 hours and he'll be on the roster.
The Colts actually still have an open roster spot at this exact moment because of the Michael
Badgley release.
And I'm assuming that that roster spot is reserved for Carlis to be activated tomorrow.
Shane Steichen didn't say much on him.
They just said that he had a good week of practice.
They've been ramping them up the last couple weeks.
So I think all signs are pointing to Carlize being back.
And I'm really curious to see what his overall role looks like on the defense this week.
You know, he's a guy who, you know, in the off season, he was losing some snaps in playing
time to Austin Ajake and a few other players in-house.
But with the cold struggles and past defense in terms of just getting teams off the field,
and there being that role open as like a third down type of linebacker,
we'll see if he's able to get out there and make an impact
or if it's mostly just a special team's role for him on Sunday.
But I fully anticipate the Colts activating him sometime tomorrow.
He'll be back on the roster.
That questionable tag will be lifted and he'll be good to go on Sunday,
regardless of what that capacity looks like.
Tyquan Lewis will have to see he has been dealing with quite a few injuries
in the past month from missing a lot of time with that groin injury,
to now barely getting any work in this week with the ankle injury.
I don't really have a projection either way when it comes to him.
The Colts rotational guy will see if he's able to go.
To answer one of the questions here in the comments section,
DeForest Buckner is not able to be activated yet.
He wasn't scheduled to return this week, so he can't play in this game.
I believe next week is the earliest he could practice potentially get back out there.
But no DeForest Buckner, no sauce gardener.
but outside of that the colts are fairly healthy josh downs good to go kenny more the second good
to go daniel jones even with that fracture in this fibula all good to go log full practices all week
uh for the first time since this injury was announced so you know the colts outside of gardner
and buckner which obviously are two very massive losses for this team uh they are pretty
healthy aside from those two guys though uh everyone else looks pretty good to go uh for jacksonville though
they are kind of on the mend a little bit here.
Two starters in Andrew Wingard and Walker Little are both out this week.
Both of them were dealing with concussion.
They weren't able to clear protocol or even get into practice this week.
So neither of those players will play this weekend.
And then some notable players are questionable for Jacksonville.
Trayvon Walker, former first overall pick who's gotten better and better each and every season.
He's questionable.
He only logged a limited practice on Friday.
So I believe that's like a true questionable design.
there. Parker Washington, very good punt returner, and he's really developed into a nice
receiver this past year as well. He also only logged that limited practice here on Friday.
So he's questionable. And I believe Eric Armstead practiced early in the week, then got downgraded
through the week and gotten a limited practice here on Friday. So those are three pretty big names
that, you know, it's not like they all got full practices on Friday and then they're still
questionable. It does seem like all three of those guys are true questionable designations that
we'll see if they're able to go sometime tomorrow or maybe they take it all the way up to game
time on Sunday. So it seems like the Colts outside of, again, Buckner and Sauce are a little bit
healthier than Jacksonville in this game. But, you know, when it comes down to it, both
quarterbacks are healthy. Most of both offensive lines are healthy. So, you know, it's not like
the biggest injuries in the world. But Walker Little being out, Andrew Wingard, those are notable
names for Jacksonville. And we'll have to just keep tabs on Trayvon Walker, Parker, Parker,
Washington, Eric Armstead, because those are very valuable rotational guys or starters for this
Jacksonville team. So injuries, part of the game at this time of the year, neither team can
fully escape it, but luckily it does seem like both these teams are coming in relatively
healthy for where we're at in the regular season. But getting into this matchup, talking about
the Colts offense versus the Jacksonville Jaguars defense. You know, Jacksonville's defense is a really
interesting one. They do kind of work well in terms of the modern NFL game, in terms of
They play hard.
They play fast.
They have a lot of deception and disguise on their side of the ball.
They actually have one of my favorite defensive coaches in all of football.
Anthony Campanile is the defensive coordinator for their team.
I've been following him since his time at Boston College.
I talked to there was this one year as a draft year where Boston College had a ton of draft
prospects like Justin Simmons, Isaac Yadam.
There were a couple other guys.
Will Harris came out of there.
And I talked to a couple of those guys at the Senior Bowl.
and they were like, oh, yeah, Coach Camp is one of the best.
So to see him go from being a DB coach at Boston College
to now being a defensive coordinator in the NFL
and doing great things with Jacksonville,
it's just really cool to see.
But yeah, he's got that unit playing really well for the Jaguars.
They defend the run well with just hard physical play.
They get a lot of turnovers.
I mean, early in the season, when they were winning a lot of games
and stacking those wins, they were getting a ton of turnovers.
That's what they were winning on the heels of,
was taking the ball away from opponents.
And as the turnover has kind of started to die down, the last two weeks, they've just been a suffocating defense that has taken away a lot of options for opposing offenses.
They're not a perfect defense.
You can throw in them a little bit.
And we have seen, you know, some max protection type looks or whatever work well.
Like Seattle threw the ball fairly well on them.
Arizona threw the ball fairly well on them.
So I think you can throw on them.
But they are a good, fast, physical, and deceptive defense that I think, you know, it's maybe not as tough as last.
week's challenge against the Houston Texans, but when you're going on the road against
the defense like this, it does pose a very unique challenge for your offense. So for the Colts,
I think the biggest thing obviously is just eliminating those just mental mistakes they've had
because I think they've moved the ball fairly well in the last two weeks. You even look at the Colts
passing game against the Houston Texans. And I think it was one of the better passing performances
we've seen from an offense against Houston all year. I know that's not saying that like, oh, the
Colts were amazing. You know, the quarterback was around 50% completion of percentage, but over 200 yards
passing, a couple touchdowns, only the one sack taken. I thought the Colts offense was able to
throw the ball fairly well against Houston compared to the rest of the league. The issue just
came down to those mental mistakes that was the difference maker. The key drops on third downs,
the penalties, the failed fourth down conversions. That's what really hurt the Colts against Houston.
And if you're losing games like that at home, those issues become even bigger on the road when the margin for error is just so much smaller.
So going to Jacksonville, those mental mistakes just can't continue for the Colts.
We can't have drop snaps.
I mean, there was the drop snap by Tyler Warren.
There was the fumbled snap from Daniel Jones where he barely got the ball into Jonathan Taylor's hands.
Those things can't happen if you want to win in Jacksonville.
Can't have the multiple drops from your sure-handed receiver in Josh Downs.
that just can't happen in Jacksonville.
So, you know, I'm not dissuaded by this Colts offense saying like, okay,
all of a sudden now they're this terrible offense when they were starting the year
so strong, but they need to get locked in mentally.
We just can't have the same mental mistakes.
If they can just get back to what they're doing, not have these lulls where, you know,
in the last two weeks, we've had two quarters where the entire offense went three and out
every time they touched the ball.
The first quarter against Houston in the fourth quarter against Kansas City,
only three and outs in those quarters.
That's just not sustainable football.
You can't win football games that way.
And then just the mental mistakes with the drops and the penalties.
Again, that's losing football when the games are so tight against playoff caliber teams.
So for the Colts, you know, I think you can throw the ball on this team, do what they've been doing, play action early, open up that run game by hitting them with play action early, be a deceptive offense like they have been.
And just don't make the mental mistakes.
If they don't make the mental mistakes, they'll be fine.
that's just been the issue the last couple of weeks.
They've been getting off the field on third downs because they're making these just dumb mental mistakes from running back missing bullets pickups to penalties to drops to, you know, whatever it is, not converting on fourth down.
You know, if they can just avoid those issues and steadily move the ball forward like they were early in the season, they can score on anybody.
So it's a really big get back game for this Colts offense.
Jacksonville's defense is no pushover.
They are competitive.
They're physical.
They're tough.
But as long as the Colts don't shoot.
themselves in the foot, they should be fine. But that'll be the big question for this Colts team
in the curse game in Jacksonville. But coming up, we're going to talk about the bigger side
of this equation, which is the Colts defense, a bit shorthanded, going against Trevor Lawrence
and that Jacksonville Jaguars offense. But first, NFL Sundays move fast, one big play, and suddenly
everything feels different. That's what makes live betting with Fandul so exciting. You're not just watching
the game. You're reacting to it in real time. With FanDuel, you can place bets as the action
unfolds, every drive, every momentum swing, every highlight moment. Live betting is best when
the game starts to shift. A receiver gets hot, a defense tightens up, or the momentum flips after
a turnover. FanDuel lets you jump in on that exact moment. You get live spreads and money lines that
adjust instantly, player props that update as guys heat up and cool off, and you can even bet on
the next touchdown scores, drive results, totals, and much.
more. It keeps you locked into every snap, every drive, and every single possibility. This weekend,
the Colts are actually one and a half point favorites on the road in Jacksonville with an over
under a 47.5. So if you're a full believer in the Jacksonville curse, throw all your money on
Jacksonville. If you're a believer in this Colts team, put some money on the Colts here. So if you
want to be right in the middle of that action this season, visit FanDuel.com and place your NFL
live bets all season long FanDuel. The game moves fast, and so can you.
All right, Locked on Colts Everydayers, we are back here going into our second segment talking about the Jacksonville Jaguars offense versus the Colts defense.
Before we jump into that, I want to thank you guys for making Locked on Colts your first listen of the day.
And thank you for making Locked on the number one sports podcast network.
If you guys can tell here, I am solo today, no Jake today.
Jake's last episode for a little bit will be the Sunday post game after this Jack.
game. Jake is expecting his second child. We don't know the gender of his child yet, so I can't
say like happy, you know, anything like that. They're waiting until the birth actually happens.
But it should be sometime next week. We want to wish Jake and his family like as much love as possible
and everything goes great next week. But yeah, Jake will be out for a time being. I will have a lot
of guests coming on in the future. We'll still have a full on show going your way. But I just wanted
to let you know if you don't hear my partner in crime as much going forward because he is expecting
his second child taking some paternity leave, you know, we offer that. I offer that to him for sure.
We're not going to make him rush back to work. You got to help out as much as possible with
everything going on. But diving into this game, guys, Jacksonville Jaguar's offense versus
the Colts defense. Colts defense has been really weird in recent weeks. We've talked about this
quite a bit in a lot of the recent episodes where there are some things that you want to
praise them for and say good job too. Those things are, they're still taking the football away.
I believe they still have a turnover forced in every single game this season.
So they have taken the football away.
They've given good field position back to the offense on those takeaways.
Overall, they stood tall in the red zone extremely well,
just exceptionally well, standing tall in the red zone and forcing field goals.
But the problem is they're not getting off the field early.
It's been a lot of bending and not breaking.
And that can keep you alive in games.
But when your offense is going through these mental mistakes that they've gone through,
it won't help you survive and thrive in these games.
So for the defense, again, they've kept the team alive in a lot of these
showings, but they haven't been a contributor to success,
if that makes the most sense.
And when we get into this game against the Jacksonville Jaguars,
they are a pretty volatile offense.
You know, one week they can drop 30 or 40 on you like it's effortless
because they have a really good running scheme,
because they have a good system that I think Liam Cohen runs exceptionally well.
But also they are prone to their mistake.
as well. Trevor Lawrence has those mental mistakes and has those turnovers. They are a team that has
a ton of drops this season, especially if Parker Washington doesn't play. Now, that's been solidified a bit
with Jacoby Myers. He's a nice, consistent receiver they brought in. And Brian Thomas Jr. does appear to
be figuring out some things here. But, yeah, Jacksonville is a team that has these mental mistakes as
well. So for the Colts, you know, there are going to be opportunities to get them into second and 10 plus,
third and 10 plus.
The key for the Colts is getting off the football field on those situations.
We can't let them continually make these six, seven, eight minute drives and take away chances
from the Colts offense, but that is kind of, again, having their own issues on that side
of the ball.
So for the Colts defense, like, look, Ben don't break style.
It's fine.
We take the football away and hold them to three.
You can survive in games that way.
But be more, like, indicative of success this week.
Look, get after it.
Force more negative plays and just.
get off the field on third down.
I want to see a game where the Colts can hold a team like under 40% third down rate,
like under 35%, like just a real suffocating game on that side of the ball.
I know it's going to be tough.
No de Forrest Buckner, no sauce gardener.
Mooney Ward has been pretty up and down since his return.
But this is the type of game where it's going to be a rainy game.
It's going to be a sloppy game.
The Jaguars already drop a lot of passes besides that, like when it's a clean environment.
So we can assume that they're going to drop some passes.
you got to capitalize on that.
That's going to be the biggest part for the Colts.
Absolutely capitalize on that.
Bring some pressure on Trevor Lawrence.
He's not as good a man-beater as C.J. Stroud was.
He's not as creative as Pat Mahomes was a couple weeks ago.
So really bring the heat, get after him, force him into quick decisions,
and see if you can make him make those mistakes
and force these receivers to make tough catches in traffic as well.
I think that'll be key.
But the other big one is just the running game for Jacksonville.
You know, they don't have this, like,
super star offensive line, but they are a big physical group that likes to get after it in the
run game.
ETN is a really solid running back back there.
He's been getting better and better.
Tutin is a good running back as well.
And they've found a nice little formula when it comes to running the football, especially in
recent weeks.
I think they've come out and run the ball very, very well.
And I really like what they're doing in terms of that regard.
So Jacksonville's type of team where like if they don't have to throw it, they won't throw it.
you know, they will lean on that run game.
So the Colts need to get those negative plays early.
You know, I think they did a good job in that Houston game last week where a lot of the runs
they were getting stops on.
They were forcing negative plays or forcing low yardage, especially early in that game,
which force the Texans into passing situations.
They just didn't get off the field in those passing situations.
You know, when it comes to playing against Jacksonville, though, I think that's a really good
recipe.
Like, again, stuff the box early, really get in there and play physical and make sure
that you are getting a hat on hat and it's just getting, it fits in those run games.
And then when it comes to the passing game, that's when you are going to just want to
blitz, man up across the board, make the catches in traffic as tough as possible, and force
Trevor Lawrence to beat you with his arm.
He's a good quarterback, but again, you want to force those situations instead of them
being in second and three with the option to run or pass with this really good, diverse running
system that they have in Jacksonville.
So, yeah, I think that we kind of just want to do what teams have been doing against the Colts,
as Jokes says here in the comment section, where you want to stuff the box a little bit,
bring Nick Cross down into the box.
If they're going to be under center, bring that strong safety blitz off the back side,
like they were doing a lot early in the season against teams like Miami,
I think against Vegas as well, where Cross was getting some QB hits coming off the back side
of play action and just make them pay for wanting to run the football by stuff in the box.
You know, dare Trevor Lawrence to be the one to beat you.
I think Trevor Lawrence can, you know, it's not that he's a horrible quarterback, but I'd be more comfortable with letting Trevor Lawrence beat you with his arm than this Jaguar's run game just slowly, methodically pushing the ball down the field and not giving the ball back to the Colts offense.
You know, if they're going to beat you, let them beat you over the top with low percentage plays rather than constant runs up the middle for five, six, seven, eight yards.
So for the Colts, you know, again, I don't think the process has been terrible lately for them.
They've been holding teams of three and they've been keeping the Colts alive.
games but I want to see more disruption. I want to see more splash plays, more sacks, more
pressure, more blitzing, getting after them. And look, if they complete a bunch of low percentage
passes to convert on you, it probably wasn't going to be your day anyway. But force them into those
low percentage plays. You know, don't make it easy for them. If they're going to catch it in traffic,
they're going to catch it in traffic. I think that's the key for the Colts. So yeah, just get after
it in this one. I want to see everyone just locked in and playing physical, commit to stopping
the run early and then playing that man with some blitz on the backside, late on downs on
those third downs, especially if you get them into like third and eight, third and nine plus
really make it tough for that Jacksonville offense because they are prone to mistakes,
but the Colts can do their own job to dictate those mistakes early and often in this game.
But coming up, guys, we talked about the offense versus defense on both sides of the ball.
What do we think happens?
Do the Colts finally break the curse in Jacksonville?
We're going to dive into it in just a second.
all right locked on colts everydayers we are back talking all about the colts and jaguars
colts at jacksonville uh jake will join us for the post game show on sunday one of his i think
this is going to be his first at jacksonville post game show that he has joined us on uh since we
started this show he always randomly misses uh that that uh at jacksonville game which is contributed to
the curse. And maybe with Jake being back this Sunday, we will actually get a win in
Jacksonville. But yeah, this is a fascinating matchup to me because I think both these teams are
capable of such beautiful highs and horrible lows, you know, where a team like Indy, I think
early in the season, they take care of business against a lot of bad teams, but we've seen
when they go up against capable teams, they can be sloppy, they can have mental mistakes,
the six turnovers versus Pittsburgh, the drops that happened last week and the fumble
snap from Tyler Warren and all the stuff that happened against the Rams early
the season.
The Colts can just get a little skittish and sloppy in these big games, but I think that
also summarizes well for Jacksonville, where the drops have been pretty heavy for
them all year, and they've had some turnover issues on offense, and they've had just times
where they've stagnated a little bit too much on that side of the ball, and their defense has
been a bit up and down as well when they're not getting takeaways.
So this is the type of game where I think it can go either way, just depending on the
absolute vibe that the game starts off with. And I understand why the betting markets have
this as basically a pick-um game. You know, it is a little bit leaning towards Colts, I guess,
because it's at Jacksonville. So have it be like a pick-ham game kind of favors them thinking
the away team is a little bit better. But in the NFL, if you're even close to each other
and talent-wise, I think that's basically a pick-em game between two divisional teams nonetheless.
So this is going to be a playoff environment for both these teams. And this is a chance to take a firm
grasp on the division lead going into the final month of the season. Colts going into December
had been pretty good in December the last couple years, but there have been some notable losses,
including that 2023 divisional loss to the Texans and that season. We also have the Giants
let down loss last year as well. So we will see what version of the Colts we get. But I think
ultimately, oh, man, I've never picked the Colts to win at Jacksonville.
ever, even back in like 2018 writing pieces for Stampede Blue, because I was so aware of this
curse even back then. I've never really picked the Colts to win at Jacksonville, but I'm going
to ride with the boys this time. I'm not ready to give up on them. I'm going to say the Colts win this
one, let's say 2723. Let's say that. Let's say 2723. I think this is a, I think this is going to be a game
where it's going to be sloppy.
It's a rainy game.
There's going to be some mistakes.
And I'm going to bank on the Colts defense,
getting Trevor Lawrence into some bad decisions,
taking that football away.
And then Jonathan Taylor and this Colts offensive line
getting back on track against a defensive front that is good.
Like, don't get me wrong.
But they don't have that otherworldly difference maker
like Chris Jones or Will Anderson that we saw the last two weeks.
Now, Josh Allen is a very, very good pass rusher.
Do not get me wrong in the slightest.
And I don't need people clipping this and saying that Josh Allen
is bad but he's not i mean will anderson's going to be up there for defensive player the year this
this year he's going to be in that top three conversation and chris jones is going to be a
first ballot hall of famer those guys are next level difference makers that exploded the colts
game plan in a lot of different ways alan can certainly make some plays but i don't think he's
in every single second down like he's in every single second of the game type of difference maker
like those two guys were so i think the colts are going to be a little bit better to get back on
track. They're going to get better just getting like moving the ball early on first and second
down. The key will just be avoiding those turnovers. And they can just get into the red zone,
get into the opponent's side of the field, sustain drives, get points on the board. I think they'll
be fine on Sunday. So yeah, I'm going to take Colts 27, 23 as of right now. I don't, I still don't
love it because again, it's a divisional game at Jacksonville. And they just haven't bode well for the
Colts. But I got to believe that this team is going to be fired up and ready. And
this playoff environment because if they lose this one,
playoffs become kind of a tough one for the Colts the rest of the way.
You know, I think PFF has their playoff percentage just dropping to around 37%.
If they lose this game, I think other sites would have them around 50-ish percent if they drop this
one, but they're around 80-something percent if they win this game.
So, yeah, I'm going to, I'm going to say Colts win this one.
Daniel Jones has beaten Jacksonville at Jacksonville before, so there we go.
I know we tried to do this with other quarterbacks as well, but we'll go with the Colts here.
But yeah, outside of that, let's see, what's some random predictions that we like in this one?
Who do we think on offense is the guy who is productive against him?
You know who I'm going to say is productive this week for the Colts?
I'm going to say it's a big Michael Pittman Jr. game because he has been a bit quiet in recent weeks,
especially the last two weeks, very quiet against the,
those games against the Chiefs and the Texans.
And Pittman Jr. is always a guy.
Whenever he starts getting that criticism is when he explodes for like a hundred
something yard game.
So I think Michael Pittman Jr. is going to have a big game.
Those in-breaking routes over the middle, creating after the catch.
We know how tough he is, how physically he is as a player.
And he rarely goes quiet for too long.
Even when he's played with his worst quarterbacks in his career,
we never really see Michael Pittman Jr. just go like a whole month without production.
You know, he usually has a big game sprinkled in there.
So I think Michael Pittman Jr. is going to be the big performer on offense in this one in terms of receiving.
Alec Pierce will certainly have his couple big catches like he always does.
But I think the force in the passing game this weekend is going to be Michael Pittman Jr.
Outside of that, I think a bounceback week for Jonathan Taylor for sure over 100 yards would be great in this one.
Jacksville's run defense is actually very good.
Again, they fit well, they're physical, but I think the Colts can get them with some misdirection and some
you know, some stuff working on the backside of formations and stuff.
I think they can do some good stuff there.
On the defense side of the ball, I think the big thing for me is I just, again,
hold them under like a 40% third down conversion rate would be great.
That would be amazing.
But if I want to go full prediction with the defense,
let's give Nick Cross an interception in this one.
It feels like he hasn't really got one.
I don't think he's gotten many splash plays this year outside of that Chargers game.
So I want to see him get back on the board.
an interception in this one, but I want to see some takeaways from the defense. I want to see a
punchout. We had that really nice one from Zaire Franklin a couple weeks ago against the
Chiefs. I want to see some punchouts on defense. I think your big guy there probably is Zire
Franklin or maybe Jermaine Pratt. Those are the guys who have done it in their career. So I want to see
a force fumble or two, and I want to see that Nick Cross interception for sure. And then for, I mean,
I got to do my special teams one. Do we try to call the kick return touchdown again? Because
it feels like we've always gotten close or not having not having it um i don't know if i can call the
kick return touchdown but let's call like a big punt return by anthony goulden this one i i don't know
something like that will be fun but um yeah i do think though i think my biggest one is i think
pitman has his big game though because again this is the type of game where he shows up uh he is a
type of guy who plays big in in big moments and i think this is the game where they need him to
to be michael pitman junior and again he rarely goes quiet for for for
a long time. And I think this is the one where he steps up. Oh, and the big one, yeah,
the big one here, too, that jokes is talking about in the comment section. Will the kicker
be an issue or will he perform? I will go on a limb and say no misses from the kicker this
weekend just because every time when it comes to a kicker that we expect them to be terrible
and miss every single kick. Somehow he'll have like an eight of eight kicking performance or
something because that's just how kickers operate. That's always how they are. I've said this too many
times this week, so I'm not going to make a too big a deal out of it. But Blake Groupie missed
eight kicks this year for the Saints before he was waived. Now he's on the Colts. Colts have a
kicking issue. They're going into a bad weather game. All this tells me as someone who hates
the kicker position because of how weird it is, is he's not going to miss a thing on Sunday,
but we'll see for sure. You guys let us know in the comments section what your predictions and
guesses are for this upcoming game. And do you think the Colts are able to turn the corner and
get back in the win column on Sunday.
