Starting point is 00:00:00 The Indianapolis Colts have quite a few gaps on the roster for a team that is supposedly in win now for 2026. Let's get to it. You are Locked on Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast. Part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day. Welcome to Locked on Colts. My name is Zach Hicks, your favorite co-host here at the Lockdown Colts podcast. And on today's show, we are diving into our first 53-man roster prediction of the season. Yes, you guys heard that right. I'm going to go through position by position and talk about
Starting point is 00:00:40 the Indianapolis Colts roster and where I think they could find their 53 bodies for week one of the 2026 season. I know it is May. Okay, guys, I know it is May currently. But if you guys are anything like me, I'm sure that you are looking at this roster trying to rack your head around what 53 guys could make this team as of right now. So let's do this early exercise just to see where the roster stands today and where some strengths and weaknesses lie with the team after free agency and after the draft and after undrafted free agencies. So the only stipulation I put on myself here for making this 53 man roster is I couldn't just say like, oh, add this free agent or add this potential unknown player to the bottom of
Starting point is 00:01:20 the roster. I had to pick the 53 guys from the guys available currently on the roster. And that was the only stipulation I put on myself. So without further ado, let's dive into the quarterback position where I can. have Daniel Jones, Riley Leonard, and Anthony Richardson as a three quarterbacks. In this scenario, Daniel Jones would likely be the starter, almost certainly going to be the starter, Riley Leonard as the backup and Anthony Richardson as the third string scratch quarterback, unless the Colts obviously go out and get another quarterback or they move Anthony
Starting point is 00:01:50 Richardson at some point this offseason. But as of right now, if all things stayed the same throughout all of training camp, I think that's how the quarterback situation would play out. and Richardson would just be that security at the bottom of the roster in case anything happened to Jones and or Leonard this season as well. So pretty cut and dry when it comes to the quarterback position. Running back is where we get into our first couple of roster debates and roster conundrums, I guess. But I just went safe with this one.
Starting point is 00:02:19 I kept three running backs and I kept the three guys who are probably the highest, like, value guys on the roster. Jonathan Taylor obviously leading at the top of the chart. and then DJ Giddins and Seth McGowan rounding it out. The real conversation piece with this one is who is winning that RB2 spot. Will it be Giddens the fifth round pick from last year's draft or will it be McGowan a seventh round pick from this current draft that just happened? I still kind of lean Seth McGowan in this battle, but ultimately we'll see how camp plays out.
Starting point is 00:02:48 I'm not going to rule out any of these undrafted free agent running backs, especially a player like Julieus Bentley, who had a really good time in last year's camp. and I think it does bring a little bit something different to the table than like a DJ Giddens does. So we'll see if he can factor in here. But as of right now, I think the three running backs would be Taylor, Giddens, and McGowan. And we'll see if they play well enough in camp to make the Colts not go out and get another veteran like they did last year with Amir Abdullah. Going over to wide receiver, I had the Colts keeping six wide receivers, but it's a little bit different with the guys I had them keeping. Obviously, at the top of the depth chart, you have Alec Pierce.
Starting point is 00:03:26 and Josh Downs. Those will be your two starting receivers in 12 and 13 personnel. And then when you go to more 11 personnel, I think Ashton Dooland would be the third receiver in that situation. And then the key depth players behind them, I have Nick Westbrook Aquine, Lequan Treadwell, and Dionne. Now, one notable name that is missing from that group is Anthony Gould, the former fifth round pick from a couple seasons ago, who was drafted more to be like a high-level return specialist, and he just simply hasn't been that with the Colts. in his time with the Colts, that is. He's been replaced over the years by Amir Abdullah, by Ashton Doolin as a kick returner. As a punt returner, Josh Downs got some reps over him.
Starting point is 00:04:05 And then he really hasn't broken through as a wide receiver at all either. So now with Dionne Burks in the fold, a player who can be a backup slide, who can be a kick and punt return guy as well, we'll see if he's able to make the roster alongside a player like Burks, as long as Burks has a pretty good offseason as well. I know Berks is dealing with some injuries currently too. so we'll see if Berks is able to supplant him on the roster. But I have Berks beating out Anthony Gould.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Now, the other question mark here would be Laquan Treadwell making the roster, a player who's been on the Colts practice squad the last few seasons. And I think with the Colts roster having a lot of turnover and having a lot of question marks on here, I think just the continuity of a player like Laquan Treadwell is going to help him win out a bottom of the roster spot. And then also a factor in this too is Ashton Doolin, And if he gets more snaps on offense, a guy who, you know, could get 20, 30, 40 snaps a game on offense now with Michael Pitman Jr. being in Pittsburgh, Treadwell is a core special teams guy, a guy who came in here halfway through last season and looked outstanding on special teams.
Starting point is 00:05:10 So you're going to need someone to replace Doolin's impact on that area of the game. And I think that's where Treadwell really slots in. So, you know, if you view like Westbrook-Akeekina and Dionne Burks as the key backups at wide receiver and you're just looking for like a pure. special team are at the bottom of the roster, I think a player like LeQuan Treadwell makes the most sense because he has done it the last couple of years. He has that continuity with the team, with the organization, and with the roster. He's beloved by the coaching staff. So I think Treadwell has a really good chance of making this team. And even if a player like Gould has a great camp as well, I wouldn't rule out Laquan Treadwell beating out of Nick Westbrook Aquina in camp
Starting point is 00:05:48 as well just because of that special team's prowess and that familiarity with the organization. So I wouldn't sleep on Treadwell this offseason. I'm not saying he's going to be this superstar player or anything for the Colts, but I wouldn't sleep on him making this team because he's been putting in all the dirty work the last couple years for the Indianapolis Colts. Going to the tight end position, this was probably one of my hardest cuts, one of my last cuts actually, and I had to do this in an episode where Jake is not here because this is Jake's boy. But I only have the Colts keeping three tight ends on my current 53 man roster projection, Tyler Warren, Moe Alley Cox, and Drew O'Will.
Starting point is 00:06:23 Tree. Will Mallory is a player that Colts have liked and valued the last couple years. And I do think that they're going to try to find some way to keep them on the roster so I could probably be wrong with this one here. But, you know, Will Mallory, he's just not the type of skill set at tight end that they're looking for, especially when the Colts have been running so much 12 and 13 personnel, the last couple seasons, especially last season, where Warren is a pretty good run blocker, Mo and Drew Ogletree, that's kind of their calling card during the run game. Will Mallory just has never brought that to the table. And that's why he's been surpassed by players like Ali Cox and Ogletree the last couple of seasons and why he's struggled to really break through with anything more than a game
Starting point is 00:07:02 day and active type of spot on the team. So maybe he has the camp of his life and he comes in blocking like he had never shown before. But I do have him ultimately missing the roster, probably being a guy who would get claimed on waivers and go on to be a bottom of the roster guy elsewhere. But with the Colts putting so much value on run blocking, and so much value on blocking in general in their tight end room. I do have them just keeping the three tight ends in Warren, Ali Cox, and Oval Tree. But we'll see if Mallory is able to break through this summer.
Starting point is 00:07:34 But that is why I have for like the skill positions on offense. You guys can let me know in the comment section below. If you agree or disagree with any of those, I know Laquan Treadwell is going to be a little bit out there. But again, familiarity is so key. We saw it with Zach Pascall a lot back in the day. We've seen it with, you know, other guys in the pet, Ryan Grant, a couple years ago as well, I guess like almost a decade ago at this point.
Starting point is 00:07:55 So familiarity is a big part of this. So I do think Treadwell is going to have a big factor into final roster cutdowns. Well, let me know what you think in the comment section below. And coming up, we're going to talk about the rest of the offense in the offensive line and go a little bit over to the defensive line as well, where we have some of our biggest questions when it comes to this Colts, early, early, early 53-man roster prediction. But first, support for today's episode comes from Square. the system that helps fix one of the biggest headaches in running a business.
Starting point is 00:08:29 Starting a business is exciting, but actually running it, that's where you can get complicated fast payments, inventory, staff, scheduling, online orders. It's all just so much to manage. That's why Square brings everything together into one connected system. Square helps you take payments, track sales, manage inventory, and keep your business running smoothly without juggling a bunch of disconnected tools. One thing I've noticed about some of my favorite local spots is how seamless everything feels, when they use Square. Check out is quick.
Starting point is 00:08:57 Receipts are easy, and the whole experience just feels much more organized. There's a local coffee shop actually out where Jake lives that Jake and I stop by. They use Square, and it makes everything super simple from fast payments to loyalty rewards and a bunch of other features as well. If you're starting a business or running one that deserves better tools, Square helps you sell, manage, and grow without slowing down. Right now, you can get up to $200 of Square hardware at square.com slash go slash locked on NFL. That's Square. SQA-R-E dot com slash go slash locked on NFL.
Starting point is 00:09:32 Run your business smarter with Square. Get started today. And guys, we can stream anything. Order food and minutes. Do everything from our phones. And somehow buying tickets to live events is still way harder than it should be. Long lines, confusing checkout prices, jumping up at the last second. It shouldn't be that complicated just to order some tickets. That's why there is game time. It gives fans the advantage and makes getting tickets fast and simple. Jake and his wife had actually gone to a show recently that he actually found on game time.
Starting point is 00:10:04 Trust me, he was texting me all through the night about this emo show that he was going to. But yeah, he was also telling me the great prices he found on game time while I'm jealously looking at it here in Virginia, looking for shows near me in Baltimore and D.C. It took him minutes to find those great options, though, and he could even see that full price up front. so no surprise fees at checkout as well. Take the guesswork out of buying tickets to every type of event, though, with GameTime. Download the GameTime app, create an account, and use code locked on for $20 off of your first purchase. We are back with our super early 53-man prediction, roster prediction, that is, for the Indianapolis Colts. And before we get back to the trenches with offensive line and defensive line, don't forget to check out the everyday or club for ad-free episodes and access to a group chat with other listeners of this show. Me and Jake, tap the link in the show notes and go to Lockdowncultz.com to join. All right, guys, let's dive into this offensive line room when it comes to this 53-man roster prediction.
Starting point is 00:11:18 And offensive tackle, I have the Colts just keeping three guys because I kind of view Mack and Solves as that like other offensive tackle that factors in. So the team has traditionally kept like four offensive tackles in the past, but because Gonzalves can kick out in a pinch and be like that swing tackle for them, I think that that technically counts as the four guys. At least in my mind, we'll see how the Colts view it come, actual roster cutdowns. But the three like official offensive tackles I have them keeping are Berenhart, Ryman, and Jalen Travis, the two starters,
Starting point is 00:11:49 and then Luke Tanuda at the bottom of the roster. You know, I did struggle between Tanuda and Nolan Rucci, but ultimately, I think a player like Tanuda just has the experience. He was here last year, played in that one game against Seattle as well. So I think Tunita just makes more sense for a team that, again, is trying to win now. Rucci, you can probably get to the practice squad and continue to develop him from there. At the guard position, no surprises here, Quentin Nelson, McInsolvis, and Jalen Farmer. Yeah, I think that those are probably your three locks or whatever at guard as well.
Starting point is 00:12:23 we'll see who ultimately wins the starting right guard spot. I still have money on Mac and saw this, but Jalen Farmer will play a good amount of snaps this year as well. At center, I technically have three on the roster, but it's kind of a little bit of a mix back here. Let me explain. Tanner Bordellin is a starting center. Dalton Tucker is the backup center, but also a backup guard as well. And then Jimmy Morrissey at the very bottom of the roster, probably being a game day and act. If Tucker does struggle as that backup center, then Moore sees the backup center and Tucker can be your fourth guard. I think Tucker is just more of your utility backup lineman. He can be the backup center. He can also be a backup guard. And then you just
Starting point is 00:13:03 keep a player like Morrissey for extra insurance on the interior. And again, if Tucker struggles, then Morrissey can be a guy who could step in and has done it at least since the college level. So I always try to get to nine offensive linemen with Indianapolis Colts. And you could have easily cut Jimmy Morrissey for Nolan Rucci and just kept the four like legit tackles there. But I think because Tucker and Gonzales have some of that roster mobility, that roster utility there, that you can keep an extra center in Jimmy Morrissey or maybe just keep whoever the ninth best offensive lineman is in camp regardless of position because you have that flexibility up there. So I ultimately kept Morrissey, but you can just kind of insert any other ninth offensive lineman.
Starting point is 00:13:44 That's where I try to go with my offensive lineman picks. Going over to defensive end, no real issues here, no real concerns outside. side of, you know, the starter going into the season. But we have Layout 2, Lottu, Arden Key, Jalen 2, Moloel, Michael Clemens, George Gums, Jr., and Caden Curry. So those are all the big names currently in the Edge Rush Room for the Indianapolis Colts. Those are the guys where if the season were to start tomorrow, they would all almost certainly
Starting point is 00:14:11 make the team. The big question, obviously, is will they go out and sign another guy to start at that other defensive end position? because Arden Key was basically a starter for the Tennessee Titans last year at defensive end or he played a lot of snaps at defense vent for the Titans and it just wasn't starting material. He's more of a rotational player at this stage of his career. And then you have Jalen to him a low-ow, who's the other guy who factors into that conversation and he just had a rookie season to forget.
Starting point is 00:14:40 Now he's got the size, he's got the traits, he's got the ability to be a starting defensive end in this league alongside Layout Tu Latu. too. But is he ready for that in year two? That's going to be the big question that the Colts are wrestling with this rest of this offseason. And they can't say that that was their plan all along because they did swing really hard for Trey Hendrickson. So it feels like going back to plan B or maybe plan C, whatever this one is with Jalen Toa and a low while being your starter. But we shall see ultimately where that comes in. Clemens, I think, is your fourth defensive and fills that Taekwon Lewis type role and just gives you some inside out versatility.
Starting point is 00:15:17 and then George Gumbs Jr., Kay and Curry, your special teamers and developmental players, but the Colts took them on day three of the draft. Curry probably backs up more of the strong side defensive end, where George Gumbs is more of your weak side defensive end, kind of your project player. I think he'd be like a game day inactive for most of the season. And then going to defensive tackle, one of the hardest ones from we predict on here, because with the Colts keeping six defensive ends,
Starting point is 00:15:42 you typically want to have the D-Line room at like 10 when it comes to the Colts. they typically don't go above that. But I do have them keeping five defensive tackles with the Forrest Buckner, Grover Stewart, Kobe Wooden, Atotomiwa, Adaboray, and then Derek Nottie at the bottom of the roster as the last one. Derek Nottie, just to add that one tech behind Grover Stewart, you know, just having another big body in there that can at least, you know, fall in the gap when he's in there for Grover Stewart and maybe clog up the middle a little
Starting point is 00:16:13 bit. I feel really good about the top four defensive tackles on this team. I mean, Buckner and Stewart, two very, very good defensive tackles that I know they are getting up there in age. Buckner has the injury concerns, but I think they are very good still at this stage of their career. Wooden, I think the film last year was really, really solid. I'm excited to see him get back out at three tech and play a little bit more as Buckner's backup. And then even if Atatomiwa' Adabor is just more past rush specialist this year, he had a really good season a year ago, had his career highs across the board, especially in snaps and sacks as well. So I think Tomy's going to be a big time player for them. And him and Wooden are both entering
Starting point is 00:16:54 contract seasons as well. We know what happens generally when young players hit contract seasons. Just look at Alec Pierce last year. So I'm not saying that both guys go off for 10 sacks or anything, but it wouldn't shock me to see both those guys have career best seasons and earn pretty nice paydays after the year as well. So, yeah, I would love to change out the One Tech for like a Cam Ball or, you know, Tim Smith on the roster as well instead of Derek Nottie. But I think the Colts are going to value the experience, value the, you know, the pedigree that Nottie has.
Starting point is 00:17:26 You know, I think he's won Super Bowls with the Chiefs. I think they're going to value that over young undrafted free agent in Cam Ball or even a player like Tim Smith, who I still think might not fully be there for the Indianapolis Colts. So, yeah, I don't love it. It's not exactly what I would do, but projecting what the Colts would do, it's kind of like the Lequan Treadwell thing on the offense side of the ball, where it's like you're keeping the veteran player that you feel better about over some intriguing younger players.
Starting point is 00:17:51 But you guys can argue with me in the comment section on that one there. But ultimately, yeah, I went with Derek Nottie at defensive tackle. Coming up, though, we're going to round out this 53-man roster prediction, talking about linebackers, defensive backs, and a couple specialists as well. I guess there are some debates at specialists. We're going to talk about all that. To round out today's super early 53 man roster prediction episode. But first, if you've ever opened your bank account and thought, where did all my money go?
Starting point is 00:18:23 You're not alone. Keeping track of subscriptions, spending, and bills can get overwhelming fast. That's where rocket money comes in, helping you take control of your finances all in one place. So how does rocket money really help you keep track of all those finances? Well, it tracks all your subscriptions in one spot. And it can help you cancel the ones that you don't really need with just a few taps. It automatically categorizes your spending so you can actually see where your money is going and you can set budgets, get alerts, and stay on top of upcoming bills. It just makes everything
Starting point is 00:18:53 feel more organized and gives you a clearer picture of the finances day to day. My wife and I have some housework that we need a handyman to come in and do some work on some very serious housework. And I'm trying to penny pinch as much as possible so I can actually afford that. That's where something like rocket money comes in and helps me save a few extra bucks that are going to go right into the handyman's pocket here soon. So Rocket Money is a personal finance app that helps you find and cancel unwanted subscriptions, monitors, your spending, and helps lower your bills so you can grow your savings or, again, the handyman's bill in pocket as well. Let Rocket Money help you reach your financial goals faster. Join at RocketMoney.com slash locked on. That's rocketmoney.com
Starting point is 00:19:33 slash locked on. Already locked on Colts everydayers, we're back with our super early 53-man roster prediction. We've gone through the trenches. We've gone through the skill position players on offense. Now it's rounded out with some of the skill position players on defense, the back seven of the Colts defense. At linebacker, a lot of young faces here at linebacker. I have the Colts keeping five. No, I have them keeping four.
Starting point is 00:20:01 Sorry about that. Four, too many hyphenated names. That's why I have them keeping five initially. C.J. Allen, and Keem Davis Gaither, Bryce Becher, and West Week. So three rookies of the four players are who I have the Colts keeping. Now, obviously in this scenario, you'd be keeping some veteran linebackers on the practice squad that you can call up and play some special teams in a pinch if need be. But ultimately, the way that I see this is C.J. Allen, Akeem Davis-Gaither, Bryce Betcher.
Starting point is 00:20:27 Those are going to be the guys that played defensive snaps. I don't think we're really going to factor in many guys after those top three playing defensive snaps. So then I just went with a player that I think is going to have that special teams upside. And to me, that's West Weeks. I think West Weeks just projects really well as a special team where I think he can come in and fill that shegoo a luby type role, that void that's going to be there on special teams. And then if any injury were to happen to one of those top three guys, then I think they would just call up a guy from the practice squad like in Austin, a GK, for instance, to play
Starting point is 00:20:58 more of a significant role in the defense other than, again, that West Weeks role. But I think weeks can be a guy that can play special teams for them. One notable exemption here is Jalen Carlize. I don't have him making the 53-man roster. And I just think the injuries have been too much. through two seasons with the Colts. I just don't know if the new staff really loves him because they haven't seen much of him. So I think that they would just keep the younger players over him, especially if it's coming down to a special team's role. I think they value a player like West Weeks,
Starting point is 00:21:27 who I think can just do it at a higher level than a Jalen Carlis. So I do think Carlis is on his last legs here with the Colts. We'll see if you can stay healthy and productive in camp and earn a spot. But we'll see what the future holds for him. Going to the cornerback room, I also have another notable cut here in the cornerback room. But at the very top of the depth chart, sauce gardener, Mooney Ward and Justin Wally are your three starters.
Starting point is 00:21:52 And then your three backups behind them, Cam Taylor Britt, Mackay Blackman, and Jonathan Edwards rounding out the group. Now, Jalen Jones, the former seventh rounder who started his first two years with the Colts and kind of had a step back last year. I do have him missing the roster. I just think this Colts coaching staff values height, height, weight, speed, way too much at corner for a player like Jaylon Jones. to even beat out a player like Jonathan Edwards who was far from perfect last year,
Starting point is 00:22:17 but he's a young guy with that height, weight speed, who I think did show some better things in camp. And we got to remember, I think Edwards would have beat out Jalen Jones in camp if Jones stayed healthy throughout all of camp because Edwards was climbing quickly up the depth chart while Jones was moving down before that injury he suffered around halfway point through in camp. So I think this staff really likes Jonathan Edwards.
Starting point is 00:22:39 I think they want to continue his development, and I don't think they're as high on Jalen Jones as well. So no other surprises there outside of Edwards over Jones. Cutting a few of these other guys in that cornerback room, like Cameron Mitchell was a little bit tough, but I think they would like to get him back on the practice squad as well and maybe work with him. But yeah, those are the six guys I have right now.
Starting point is 00:22:59 But I do think anywhere from Taylor Britt, Mackay Blackman, Jonathan Edwards, Jalen Jones, Cam Mitchell. Like, I think any of those guys could make it. These are just the three that I ultimately went with. as of right now, more so for their experience in this system last year and for Cam Taylor Britt years before as well. And then at safety, I had them keeping five at the safety position. Cam Bynum and A.J. Hallstay is your two starters. Hunter Waller as your third safety slash dime linebacker and core special teamer.
Starting point is 00:23:28 And then the two guys at the bottom of the list, Wanye Thomas and Jonathan Owens. Wanya Thomas, I think, just gives you more of that free safety build that you're looking for behind Cameron Bynum. So I think that's why he would get the nod there. And then Jonathan Owens has just done special teams so much in his career. I give him the nod over players like Trey Washington and Ruben Lowry and some of those other guys who haven't played as much special teams as Jonathan Owens. So that's where I kind of went with the safety room, but there's so many intriguing safeties right now.
Starting point is 00:23:59 You can even throw an Austin Brown in there, the undrafted free agent that got pretty big guarantees. I think you could realistically slide any of those guys in at the bottom. two safety spots. But ultimately, Wanya Thomas' ability is a free safety. Jonathan Owens' experience as a special teamer. I think that's what's going to win the day for those two guys at the bottom of the roster. And then to round it out real quick,
Starting point is 00:24:22 at kicker, punter, and long snapper. We have Blake Groupie, Rigoberto Sanchez, and Luke Rhodes. I went with Blake Groupie over Spencer Schrader purely because of the big leg. I think Groupie's got a bigger leg than Spencer Schrader. And then Schrader's coming off of an injury as well. So who knows exactly what his. his confidence and his power looks like in his kicking leg where groupie finished the year so strong last year, very confident player. If he comes into camp and makes his first couple kicks,
Starting point is 00:24:48 you could see that carrying through all the way through the rest of camp as well because he's just that confident of a player. So I ultimately had them keeping Blake Groupie. Nothing would shock me when it comes to a kicker camp battle though. If Groupie goes on a tear, it becomes the best kicker in football or both of these guys are the worst kickers ever. Like nothing shocks me when it comes to the kicker position. So we'll keep an eye on that throughout all the training camp. But as of right now, I would lean Blake Groupie with that. So just looking through my 53-man roster prediction as of right now,
Starting point is 00:25:19 nothing too surprising. I do have, what, the one undrafted free agent making it in West Weeks, with Nolan Rucci and Campbell being some of like the last cut players I had. Richardson still on the roster as well as of right now. And then a few notable cuts like Will Mallory, Jalen Carlis was a notable cut. and Jalen Jones as well. But nothing too crazy.
Starting point is 00:25:40 You guys can let me know in the comment section below if you agree or disagree with some of my picks here. It's still early. We could still see the Colts sign some players. We will see some injuries in camp that changed this equation quite a bit. But just looking at the roster right now, I'm liking the safety position. I think corners got some depth. Linebacker looks better than what it did.
Starting point is 00:26:01 O-line, I feel better about. And defensive tackle at 3-Tech I feel good about. But there's still questions. defensive end, I think at wide receiver as well. You can even say running back has some questions too. So we'll see how this roster looks come in September, but I still think there's some work to do for this Colt team. Hopefully some guys can turn heads in training camp,
Starting point is 00:26:22 and we can see this roster really come together. But that is all I have for today.
