Starting point is 00:00:01 The Indianapolis Colts must resign Alec Pierce and Daniel Jones for their 2026 plans. Let's get to it. You are Locked on Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. Welcome to Locked on Colts, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. Now the number one sports podcast network around. Hello everyone. My name is Zach Hicks, your resident film nerd of horseshoe huddle.com.
Starting point is 00:00:36 And of course, I'm joined, as always, by a number one. Jake Arthur, the boots on the ground for round table sports covering your Colts team. Today, we are diving into a couple of in-house free agent priorities for the Colts this off season. Really, there's two main priorities. And then after that is when it gets kind of interesting for this team. Then we are going to dive into any extension candidates. I know we're in the middle of wanting to burn everything down this off season as Colts
Starting point is 00:01:02 fans, but there are a couple of players that are up for an extension that could help the Colts open up some caps. face instead of just burning it down and cutting all the contracts. And then we're going to look at the building blocks on this roster. Are there building blocks on rookie contracts or on feasible contracts that are going to be with this Colts team for the next five to 10 years? We're going to dive into that to close out today's show. But Jake, when we talk about in-house free agents, there's a tier of this where there's
Starting point is 00:01:29 just two guys by themselves at the very top. And then you can talk about the rest of the free agents. But Daniel Jones and Alec Pierce, you kind of have to say them in the same. breath. They are the most priority for this Colts team, especially Jones, because that's the quarterback that the Colts have all but committed to and all of their pressers since the end of the season. But I think for me, you've had to put Jones and Pierce up there. Your thousand-yard receiver who did what he did on as few catches, you know, 47 catches for a thousand and three yards. You have to bring that back. And then Jones, obviously, the quarterback who looked
Starting point is 00:02:03 the most promising since Philip Rivers back in 2020, those are the Colts' biggest priorities going into this must-win heightened sense of urgency season in 2026. Yeah, without a doubt, when you look at the list, there's two guys you see and you say they really can't go into 2026 without them. And then the rest is just, it's kind of peppered with guys where it's like, yeah, it'd be nice if they would be back, but it's not like hypercritical. But with Jones and Pierce, it almost does seem like a package deal. And Pierce himself said during locker cleanout day, he's like, yeah, I mean, Dan, Daniel being here would be kind of a big draw for me, a big factor in me returning to
Starting point is 00:02:43 Indianapolis, which he does want to do, but would be wise to probably see what other teams might be offering if the Colts drag their feet at all, because he's going to be a highly coveted player this offseason. But Jones, that's a foregone conclusion. They've, like you said, they've pretty much said we're confident we'll have something done in free agency to bring him back. They're already speaking as if their 2026 plans are with him at quarterback. So they may even have some sort of verbal agreement of like, yeah, let's not straight
Starting point is 00:03:16 too far from each other this off season. We'll get something done. But Pierce has become their number one receiver. He was just like the big play guy and, you know, all of his targets were 15 plus, you know, yards down field. But now we're seeing him do a lot of the like smaller things. you know, he's he's winning closer to the line of scrimmage. There's things like in the red zone where he used to be like, well, this is a big Michael
Starting point is 00:03:44 Pittman opportunity. Pierce is kind of absorbing some of the responsibilities of other receivers now, it seems. And even with the arrival of a guy like Tyler Warren, who could have wound up dominating the target share and everything, Pierce has found a way, especially in the red zone, to still be just a huge critical piece. So first thousand yard season, two years in a row leading the league in yards per catch. He's more than just a big player receiver now. Yeah, no, for sure.
Starting point is 00:04:15 And I expect both of those guys to be back. Like maybe there's something weird that goes on with peers. But I think both of them are going to be back for the Colts this next season. And then it's about finding the money for other players to resign or players on the open market. But these next two players, Jake, I put them in a similar tier because I think in a perfect world the cult will want both of them back, but the price tag might get a little bit tricky with them. And that's Braden Smith and Nick Cross, where Braden Smith, even with the injuries, even with some inconsistencies the last couple years, offensive tackles are hard to find in this league.
Starting point is 00:04:47 I could see him making anywhere between 10 and 15 million per year on the open market. Nick Cross, I mean, we saw what Trayvon Moore got on the open market last year, which is like in that 15 to 17 range. Yeah. I think per year, Nick Cross still a very young safety. is he worth 15 to 17 when you're talking about needing to revamp your entire edge room? I think that's a big question for the Colts this off season, but I think those two are in that similar tier where it's like we'd like to have them both back,
Starting point is 00:05:15 but when we have to do so many changes on defense and we need the money to do that, it might make the most sense to let both those guys walk. Yeah, I really struggle with Cross. Cross, I think is a very good player, and it's beneficial to have him. he does have some issues in coverage and like when there's a blown assignment especially down near the goal line it does seem like he's usually involved yeah like how effective he is with everything in front of him and like in the box and everything he's been arguably their most consistent defender the last couple years
Starting point is 00:05:52 but the problem i do see with that is the price like you mentioned he's got consecutive hundred plus tackle seasons he's been up there amongst the highest number of tackles for defensive backs each of the last two years. And he can take the ball away, too. He's not, like, he's not a stonehands guy. Like, he can get those interceptions. A lot of times they're downfield as well. So he's got the range.
Starting point is 00:06:15 Like, remember one of the biggest calling cards for him coming out of Maryland was, I feel like he was kind of one of those rad superstars, if I'm not mistaken. So there should be plenty of draw for him. If they stay around 10 or, a little less because we know the safety market always sucks every year for the most part. That's a very devalued position. Sometimes it's weird like you mentioned with Mareg. But if they could stay around 10 or a little less, I'm cool with that.
Starting point is 00:06:46 Yeah. It really comes down if he's going to get the Morgic contract, essentially, is what it goes. If he gets that, I think you got to let him walk. That's just too much for a guy who struggles so much in coverage. Like just the depth issues and just the eyes. I mean, you can go after that Houston game. at the end of the season. They're blitzing late to try to prevent that field goal.
Starting point is 00:07:05 And he's just in no man's landing coverage. Just covering nobody. Wherever else is doing man, he's just standing there. So it's like stuff like that. I think the Colts, if it gets up to like 15 to 17, you got to let him walk. Real quick, though, Jake, this next tier guys will go rapid fire with kind of my own tiers here. I think these are guys that you want back. They're probably not going to cost much.
Starting point is 00:07:26 But I guess you could, like it doesn't hurt you if you let them walk. But I put these guys together. Mo Ali Cox, Neville Gallimore. I guess Jermaine Pratt, maybe you put in this group too? Like I think those three are the guys I put together where it's like, sure, if they're like all under like two million, three million dollars per year each, bring them back. Good depth, good players to have. But like, if somebody else wants to break the bank for, I'm not going crazy saying we need to have these guys back. But I think those are guys that like in a nutshell you want to have those three guys back.
Starting point is 00:07:56 Yeah, Gallimore is a priority for me personally. And with Moe Alley Cox, you could probably make him interchangeable with Drew Ovaltree. Again, for the second offseason in a row, I don't think it's necessary to have both. I think we even saw that this year. Like, they did some cool things with everyone involved, but it's just probably not necessary when you have Tyler Warren playing as much as he can. Jermaine Pratt, that isn't an intriguing one, but they want to get younger and faster the position. And although he was their best linebacker this year, I think it's probably just that.
Starting point is 00:08:29 that they will move on most likely. But yeah, Gallimore is a guy for me, especially. Buckner is so much in the air right now, even if he does return, how confident are you going to be with the neck? And that's far from the only injury he's had in the last few years. So Gallimore, I would absolutely bring back as long as it doesn't get overpriced. Yeah, no, I mean, if it's under like $3 million per year, like sure, just bring him back. And this last group of guys, Jake, are guys, you probably let walk.
Starting point is 00:08:56 I think if you're the Colts, but, Yeah, of unrestricted free agents, I think these are guys you let walk. That's Quitty Pay, Drew Ogletree. Maybe in the world you can bring Ogletree back, but honestly, just get a different tight end three. One or the other. Than Ogletree. Yeah, it's whatever. Samson, Ebukom, Tyquan, Lewis, Rodney Thomas, Eric Johnson, like all of those undrafts,
Starting point is 00:09:17 or all those unrestricted free agents, like, I'd probably just let them go. Maybe they can come back on like a one year of that minimum contract just to fill out space. But for the most part, I don't really. care for bringing back any of those guys. Like if you want to get younger and faster on defense, don't bring back Taekwon Lewis. Don't bring back Samson, Ebukom. Ronnie Thomas, he's fine, like, whatever, but like, just move on from these guys and get some new, new faces in here. Yeah, there's nothing other than, like,
Starting point is 00:09:45 if you just absolutely love them as people, there's nothing about them as players that should really draw you to say that they can't be replaced by, again, just fresh energy in the building, because those are all guys that play. So, yeah, as far as all those guys go, I'd be fine, let them walk. Yeah, and that's our quick free agent preview. Don't worry, guys, we have plenty more free agent previews coming the rest of the off season. But coming up, we're going to talk about some extension candidates with this Colts team. Are there players on this roster worth extending, or are you guys so angry with this team that you just want to get everybody out of here?

We are back guys talking about extension candidates for this Colts team. And I think the one that we have to talk about first because it's one that will almost certainly happen this offseason, Jake is Quentin Nelson, the future Hall of Famer, future ring of honor, future anything that you want to call him,
Starting point is 00:13:42 the best pick of the Chris Ballard era, the best player on this team in the last 10 years, whatever it's been. Quentin Nelson will be getting his extension this year. It'll lower his cap for this upcoming season. it'll lock him up to be a cult until he retires, most likely. And yeah, Quentin Nelson deserves every bit of money. I think we can all agree on that.
Starting point is 00:14:02 I know some people are saying trade Quentin Nelson because you can get draft picks back. But here's the thing. You're not going to draft a player that gives you more value than Quentin Nelson on that rookie contract. So have Quentin Nelson, regardless of tear it down, regardless of build it up, because it's always nice to have an all-time great offensive linemen in front of your quarterback, regardless of which quarterback you're starting. So Quentin Nelson will be getting his extension at some point this off season. I expected to be very big because he's worth it.
Starting point is 00:14:30 Very good player. Outside of that, though, Jake, we have some interesting names of guys where it's like, they're on that fringe of like, do you cut them to open up the cab space? Do you trade them to open up the cap space? Or do you extend them to open up the cap space? Michael Pittman Jr., I think, is one of those guys, right? Like, we've been operating with the cut or trade mindset there. but the Colts and Chris Ballard in particular might be operating from the extension standpoint.
Starting point is 00:14:58 Grover Stewart, I think, is another guy who falls in that same category where the Colts can save over $12 million by cutting or trading him this offseason, but an extension could also open up some of that cap space. So I think those are two players where, again, we've been talking about them as cut candidates or trade candidates. But from the Colts perspective with Chris Ballard, he might be thinking extension candidates because that's typically how he's operating. Yeah, that's the way he's going to get around the having to make a really grueling tough decision. He'll get that cab space cleared up, but it's not going to be at the expense of sending that player packing. But now, Quentin, like you mentioned in the top, that's an obvious one. We saw, to a smaller degree, Kenny Moore restructured his deal during the season, which created a cap space they needed to sign Jermain Pratt.
Starting point is 00:15:48 So with Quentin Nelson, I imagine they'll do something quite similar, but just again, in a bigger scale, opening up more cap space, because that's a guy who annually costs you over $20 million in caps a meal. You'll use the signing bonus to offset some of that. You'll push some of it to future years to where when you extend him again, you won't have to fight it too much. So yeah, Quentin Nelson, they'll work around that. But he'll get his extension because he deserves it.
Starting point is 00:16:16 Yeah, he's also someone who wants to win. and he knows, like, he can see all the BS that's going on. And if he wants to stay a part of this team, he's likely going to want to open up space to bring in better players here. Yeah. So he's that type of guy. But yeah, like you mentioned, so many of these other guys are ones who we've talked about them just cutting. Otherwise, but yeah, it's very much in the Ballard vein to find a way to keep them around and move money around with Mike Bloom to create more cap space. but other ones who would make some sense, Josh Downs,
Starting point is 00:16:52 but coming off the season he just had, I would expect them to maybe let that one get down to the wire. Ashton Doolin, I could see them doing like a two-year deal with him, two-year, three, or probably not three, but two-year deal, just because there's hardly any players in that locker room more revered than Ashton Doolin. Rigoberto Sanchez, I feel like he just gets the one-year deal every year. I don't know what they're doing with that.
Starting point is 00:17:16 that's looks like a mainstay player on your roster he's been here since 2017 it's not going to hurt you to lock up your punter long term like punters aren't as volatile as kickers are like you can probably let rigo get a little comfortable and then a dark horse for me now this won't be an offseason one but maybe like if next season starts out a little hot Tommy adivore yeah what do you think about that one because like he is taking a natural progression and if he's that continues in the next year, then that's a guy who would probably earn decent money on the open market next year. Yeah, well, I was actually going to say when we were looking at, when we're looking at these extension candidates, right? Again, my brain is very much in tier listing because that's what I'm doing on my other YouTube channel. But like you have your guys like Quentin Nelson where it's obviously going to happen. You have guys like Taylor and Pittman where it could happen. But then you have that question mark where it's like Atatomiwa Adi Adiore and Josh Downs, they're not necessarily in that same risk as,
Starting point is 00:18:16 as Alec Pierce was, where last off season, the Colts probably could have extended Pierce. Now, again, it takes two to tango. We don't know how open Pierce was to an extension. But if Pierce was, the Colts maybe could have got him at like 18 per year, 16, 17 per year, you know, and maybe got him in a cheaper contract,
Starting point is 00:18:33 but now it's going to cost them like near 25 per year to keep him long term. So if you want to extend guys like Atatomio, you extend guys like Josh Downs because you feel like that breakout is coming, and you want to get ahead of the, curb and get them locked up before that explosion to where they're going to cost you more money. Those would be the two guys you would look at. I don't think they're going to break out the same way that Alec Pierce did.
Starting point is 00:18:57 Maybe if you project a bigger role for Downs next year, you try to get him locked up, but then he would understand that and he wouldn't sign that contract. So, you know, it's a, it's kind of a push pull when it comes to this stuff here. But those would be the two young guys coming off their rookie contracts that you would look at. But because they had such an awful 2023 draft, those are the old. only two young guys that you're really looking at because like Anthony Richardson, you're not going to extend. You're probably trading him this all season.
Starting point is 00:19:23 Juju Brent's is out of here. So there's not many other guys from that draft class. But those are the two guys where if you wanted to get ahead of it, those would be the two guys you'd look at. Yeah. Yeah. You know, we totally forgot to ask Chris the other day if they were going to pick up Anthony's fifth year option.
Starting point is 00:19:41 I don't know about that. He would have just been like, it's something we're going to work through, but they're going to trade this season. And the other team will pick up the option. You know, so. Yeah, but no, just to run through this list one more time. Anthony, obviously, Jonathan Taylor, Quentin Nelson. Jonathan, that one's interesting.
Starting point is 00:19:57 Just because the area he's in in his career, he's still earning, you know, mid-teens per year. So Quentin, Buck, Pittman, Josh Downs, Grover, Stewart, Kenny Moore, Ashton, Doolin, Rigo, and Attaima, Atta, I think outside of Quinn, I don't think we see an extension this off-season. I'd agree with that. Maybe Taylor for like an extra two years or something, but aside from that, I think Nelson's the only extension we see.
Starting point is 00:20:24 But you guys let us know in the comment section what you think. Coming up, though, we're going to talk about some young building blocks that the Colts actually have locked up. Who do they have that are under 30, under 28, whatever, that are going to be here for the long haul, regardless of rebuild, that you can kind of sell not only to this fan base, but sell to maybe a new general manager or head coach down the line, Who are those guys on this team?

Locked on Colts, Everydayers, we are back as I've been gargling on males, I guess, all episode with some of these flubs, but we are back talking about some of the younger building blocks on this team going forward. Like, what are the selling points of this roster that are on rookie contracts or maybe locked up on long-term extensions.
Starting point is 00:23:10 And Jake, I mean, the first two guys I think we have to talk about are, one, the guy they extended prior to last offseason, and then two, two, the guy they just traded two first-round picks for, because those are probably your biggest building blocks. Berenhardt Ryman at left tackle for my money is a top 10 left tackle in football, would be a pro-bowler in most years if the Colts were a playoff team. But because the Colts aren't a playoff team, they're not getting even the playoff in the pro bowl because that's just how this works. And then Sauce Gardner, I mean, you're trading two first.
Starting point is 00:23:38 first round picks for a guy who's 25 years old, who's been a first team all pro at corner. I still think for my money is a top 10 corner in football, just needs to get back out there and stay healthy. We saw some good moments when he played. But I mean, those are two premier players at premier positions, left tackle and cornerback that the Colts are locked into for quite a long time. So they're not all rookie contracts, but those are two guys that the Colts are relying on for a long, long time, regardless of status of the roster or the team. No, a lot went wrong this year, but if those guys weren't going to be building blocks moving forward, then it was disaster time.
Starting point is 00:24:14 Because Bernard is a $100 million tackle, and obviously with Soss, that's, he was the most handsomely paid corner in the NFL by the Jets and then gets traded here for two first round pay. So yeah, they better be part of the future plans. You don't want to have to replace a left tackle, obviously, and I would agree with you. I think Ryman, there's sometimes he has some warts that makes me scratch my head a little bit, but at the same time, he is a well above average tackle, and you don't want to find yourself looking for those.
Starting point is 00:24:46 So he's definitely included in that. Sauce, you know, the name of the game nowadays, I mean, running is kind of coming back up, but you have to have someone that can defend in man coverage specifically, and in this defense specifically with Lou Aniromo. So Sauce included looking forward to seeing him healthy next year and not like coming off of the heels of two Europe trips and like having to play a game in three days. Like I want to see Sauce with the Colts with a full offseason of just normalcy,
Starting point is 00:25:19 whatever that means for the Colts. A couple of other guys that would throw in here. Tyler Warren, again, for what you just used for him, last year's first round pick, he better be part of this Lyatulatu, same thing, two years ago, first round pick. So Warren, you can find production from Tidin
Starting point is 00:25:36 in a lot of places, but he was one of the best in the league as a rookie. Now, it just so happened, there's a couple of other guys who were super productive this year as well, but you can't quite do everything with just your regular Titan that you can do with Warren.
Starting point is 00:25:54 So for that reason and the fact that I assume he's going to keep getting better. He's included there. Latu. Again, he's not elite yet. He's productive, but he's not elite. And you've got to hope that he's just going to keep getting better. So those are a couple more guys that would throw into the conversation.
Starting point is 00:26:12 Yeah, Latu and Warren, too. I mean, Warren, it's not as pressing because he's going into his second year. But Lawtu is going into such a big year three. And this is something for more of a future episode when I got to wrap my brain more around Latu because all the animals. analytics say that he's heading towards this year three breakout that we typically see from edge rushers that that third year is really when they break out so i i think i got to go back and forth between the analytics and the film part of my brain when it comes a lot too um but i i think he can be
Starting point is 00:26:43 a building block i think he's been a good player through the first two years but he needs to be uh that building block player you know that star player uh and all things are pointing to potentially that happening next year but we'll see tyler warren uh just show that that rookie wallie hit for a little bit there in the second half of the year isn't a consistent thing. And I think we'll be fine there. But yeah, those are obviously guys. Tanner Bordolini you have on the list as well. I do think that this is a player that got a little bit too much hate from the fans.
Starting point is 00:27:08 I think offensive linemen in general get a little too much hate from fans when things go wrong. Bordellini wasn't perfect by this, like by any means this past year, but he's still only, what, 22, about to turn 23. Pretty young. Yeah. Yeah, heading into his third year with the team. And he just started a whole season at center. most of the season at center and played some pretty good football.
Starting point is 00:27:28 So as long as you expect him to take another step forward this next year, and there were times last year where he was playing at like a fringe pro bowl level, then I think he's going to be a building block going forward. I think a lot of the linemen in general, as long as Tony Sparano Jr. is here. You know, Matt Consolves, I think, can be like, you know, a good lineman is part of the building block of a team. You know, it's hard to find good linemen in this league. Consolves put up some good film this year.
Starting point is 00:27:53 Jalen Travis showed some good things. I'm not putting him in building block as of right now because it's so early. But if he can have a good season next year, he can be part of that going forward. So I think the offensive line is a good selling point with this team going forward, even with Braden Smith walking and Nelson getting a bit older. I still think the offensive line is a good selling point. But outside of that, Jake, I don't know. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:28:18 I mean, you have Cameron Bindam on here. He's a playmaker. He's a playmaker. He's a good fit in this scheme. maybe not the perfect fit across multiple schemes, but good playmaker, good solid player that's locked up for a couple of years. I would agree with you there. They just haven't hit many home runs in the draft recently.
Starting point is 00:28:35 So that's the problem here. You would like to think this list would be bigger. Hopefully you can add Justin Wally and Hunter Woller to it next year. I think that would be nice. And I know we're pumping up Hunter Woller a lot for what fans haven't seen yet. Yeah, I don't know if I can go that far with you here, Jake. I don't know if I can go with Woler here. Well, listen, I'm saying you hope to see him in the list next year.
Starting point is 00:28:59 That would be awesome, which we can see a seventh round pick on this list. Yeah. Well, it seems like we're pumping him up a lot. But the fact of that is we have seen things that not everybody has because a lot of it's happened in practice or training camp. Well, for him, essentially all of it because Willer got hurt in the summer. The dude is a playmaker. And, like, he did it from multiple spots. I'm telling you, if he would have been healthy this year, he would have played a ton.
Starting point is 00:29:27 He probably would have been their dime linebacker and would have early on been a solution to something they were looking for. And if he could make plays out on the field like he did in practice and even Baltimore, he, like, he picked off Lamar Jackson. Like, he had finished two drives with interceptions. Like, he had a great performance against a different team. I have high hopes for him. I don't love the fact that he is literally still in a boot as of me seeing him last week, but I have high hopes for Hunter Waller.
Starting point is 00:29:58 I'm calling my shot there. I feel like I'm going to be the antagonist a little bit with Hunter Waller because even though I kind of like him, I just, to bring him up even for this, I just don't know if... We're forecasting it. So you hope to see them on the list next year. Man, getting a seventh round pick
Starting point is 00:30:15 that didn't even play in his rookie season to be on this kind of list though, Jake, that would be incredible. I'm a dreamer. I'm a dreamer and I shoot for the stars. If you want to call your shot, I'm all for it. I just, I can't go that far with you. Early prediction. But then again, I'm a big Justin Wallet guy, and I hope Justin Wallet can be part of this,
Starting point is 00:30:32 this next season. I'll say one more, though. If Spencer Schrader would have finished the year, I legit would have had Spencer Schrader on it. I know you hate that. It's a kicker. Schrader was like a top three, top five kicker. kicker before he got hurt. Blake Groupie did the same thing at the end of the season.
Starting point is 00:30:51 Blake Groupie was just as good. He was better. Kicked a 60. Hey, the 60 yard that Schrader missed in a dome to win it against Denver. What did Groupie do outside in Seattle? He made his. Blake Groupie defender right here, baby. Well, no, they're going to carry two kickers throughout the year now because of you.
Starting point is 00:31:11 It's Groupie and Schrader throughout the year. They're going to hold two kicker spots all season. Oh, man. what, I'm cool with that. Put whoever's not the starting kicker at Gunner next year, and then we'll be going to put Blake. You're going to put Blake, you're going to put Blake, groupie in arms away like that. Hey, I saw him to try that tackle late in the season. I saw him, he tried. He tried. But this is where we're at, guys. We're trying to talk young offensive building blocks that we're making kicker jokes at each other. So yeah, the Colts, I think they have a left tackle going
Starting point is 00:31:41 forward. They have Soss Gardner going forward. A couple offensive linemen in general. Outside of that, though, I'm not sure. Like, again, you get Pierce under contract and you have a pretty good receiver under contract. You get a couple other players extended. Like, Taylor is still pretty young. Like, if you get him on an extension, you'll have a couple things like that. So it's not as doom and gloom as we're making it seem here at the end. But, you know, in terms of like surplus value on rookie contracts currently, they don't have a ton.
Starting point is 00:32:08 And that's a little bit concerning. So they really need to knock this next draft out of the park without their first round pick.
