Starting point is 00:00:00 Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones appears to be ahead of schedule as the Colts kickoff voluntary OTAs this off season. Let's get to it. You are Locked on Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast. Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. How's it going, everybody? My name is Zach Hicks, and welcome to Locked on Colts. We are going to be discussing some new Colts football on today's show, at least, little bit of new Colts football. The Colts kicked off voluntary OTAs this off season on Wednesday.
Starting point is 00:00:41 And we have some news and notes and some reports coming out of those practices. Our boots on the ground, Jake Arthur is going to be out for the rest of this week. Well, he will rejoin us again next week to talk about the upcoming practices and we'll rehash a little bit of what he saw on Wednesday's practice as well. But he did share with me all of his news, notes, quotes, everything that he got out of that first practice on Wednesday. So we're going to discuss some of that here in the opening segment for today's show. Then we're going to dive into the running back room behind Jonathan Taylor. Do they have enough behind Jonathan Taylor or should they go the veteran route? We're going to talk about each of the options competing four snaps behind the Belcal running back.
Starting point is 00:01:19 And then we're going to go over to the linebacker room to close out today's show and talk about the bottom of the roster at linebacker. We know the top three guys are pretty secure in their positions. But could the Colts keep four? Could they keep five at that position? what could the bottom of that roster really look like? We're going to go through all of the candidates in that room as well. But again, we have some new football to talk about. Colts OTAs kicked off on Wednesday or at least kicked off in terms of like the media
Starting point is 00:01:45 could watch the practice. So we were able to get a little bit of insight into the team. According to Shane Stuyken, veterans that were out of this, again, voluntary OTA. Mooney Ward, Jonathan Taylor, Sawes Gardner, and Cam Taylor Britt were not in attendance. Stuyken did kind of infer that there was some personal matters with some of the guys. And again, since it's not mandatory at this point, a lot of these are very excused. So we'll see the status of these players when mandatory rolls around here soon. But in terms of injuries, DeForest Buckner is still dealing with that neck injury from last off season.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Jalen Travis, according to Shane Steichen, has, and I quote, a little back. So I don't think that he's ever been described as someone was having a little back, but apparently he's got a little back right now. They don't seem too nervous about that back injury, though, for Jalen Travis. It's just more precautionary at this point. And then Alec Pierce, the star wide receiver, did have cleanup surgery on his ankle earlier in the spring. He's expected to be out until training camp, so we'll keep an eye on his status going forward. But the big news of the day was quarterback Daniel Jones participating in individual drills,
Starting point is 00:02:52 running sprints after practice and being very involved and active, looking good out there, honestly from every clip that was shown, every video has shown, doesn't look like he has much of a limp, walking pretty normally out there, throwing the ball with some pace on it. Daniel Jones looked like Daniel Jones out there. And remember, this is what, six-ish months removed from that Achilles tear and obviously the surgery that he had. So he appears to be way ahead of schedule. He's moving well. He's very active right now for the Colts.
Starting point is 00:03:22 Shane Sneken didn't even rule out Daniel Jones participating in some seven-on-sevins next week or in the coming weeks. So I think Jones could be back at practice sooner rather than later. And Daniel Jones is actually asked after the practice if like the expectation has always been to play week one. And he kind of confirmed like, yeah, the thought process has always been ready for week one. And it's something that we've talked about quite a bit on this show as well, where by everything that we've heard from the Colts, everything we've seen from the Colts, the expectation has always been that Daniel Jones will be the week one starter against the Baltimore Ravens this season. and nothing about what we saw on Wednesday's practice really changes that.
Starting point is 00:03:59 He appears to be way ahead of schedule. He should be cleared by middle to late August at the latest, and I fully expect him to be that week one starter. So Daniel Jones, all good signs from him, obviously, at this point, and we're excited to see what he can do going forward. In other quarterback news, Anthony Richardson and Riley Leonard will split a lot of the backup snaps or I guess the starting team snaps the rest of the offseason. And Scyken did talk about both players in depth in his post practice media availability.
Starting point is 00:04:29 Seemed to be really raving about Riley Leonard while also still being a bit cautious about Anthony Richardson. But it did seem a little bit more optimistic about Richardson than he had in the past, which is good to see. Again, we've been down on Richardson on this podcast here in the last calendar year or so. But there's still a lot of talent there. He still is a good dude. Like you really want to see him succeed in the NFL, whether it's with the Colts or someone else. So it's good to hear Shane Steichen. I think one person put it on social media,
Starting point is 00:04:56 not sound like he was in a hostage situation, basically talking about Richardson. So some positive news about both quarterbacks. But, yeah, Riley Leonard, he certainly pumped up quite a bit about his work ethic and a lot of the stuff he's doing behind the scenes as well. So we'll just monitor that quarterback situation the rest of the off season. It was a pretty even split on Wednesday, according to Jake, from the notes that he sent me.
Starting point is 00:05:19 Speaking of notes and speaking about some of the play on the field, Colts rookie C.J. Allen did come away with an interception in teams, it looks like. Jake said he didn't get a great view of the play, but the way that everybody reacted and celebrated afterwards was very similar to the way they would react to an interception. So he chalked it up as an interception, but maybe we'll get the video from Colts social in the next couple days as well. So C.J. Allen already making his mark in practice. And then this one was for me, and I had so many Colts fans reaching out to me when they
Starting point is 00:05:48 read about this. Colts cornerback, Jonathan Edwards, with a couple of of past breakups from each quarterback from Richardson, throw on the ball against him and also Riley Leonard. And yeah, I had multiple DMs, multiple private messages and even like call outs on socials being like, look, Zach, Jonathan Edwards is finding the football. So that joke that we have on this show about Jonathan Edwards being a really good corner that just can't find the football, maybe that can end this year. I would love for Jonathan Edwards to be able to like take that next step this year. I still fully believe in all of the talent
Starting point is 00:06:21 that he possesses. I still fully believe in the upside, the height, weight speed, the coachability that he has. I really like Jonathan Edwards. So hopefully this carries into the rest of the offseason, carries into the season, and the Colts have a gem in Jonathan Edwards. I'm still really impressed by a young player. And if he can just find the football, if he can just find that football consistently, we could have a good player. But shout out to every single person who made sure I saw that Jake wrote about that. I think that was the most important thing from Wednesday's practice. Then some other news and notes here.
Starting point is 00:06:53 Some joint practices have been announced. We don't have exact days on them yet, but the Colts will have two joint practices with the Atlanta Falcons and one with the New England Patriots as well. So getting those joint practice in, Shane Stakin appears to be a huge fan of joint practices. I remember years ago, he was like so pumped to have a joint with Luana Rumo against the Bengals. And I think that he just likes having that ability to. to go up against a different team and really test things out
Starting point is 00:07:22 and test the waters of his team in those practices. I was actually at the Baltimore Ravens joint practice last year, and I thought that was great for the Colts. Even though they lost Justin Wallie for the entire season in that practice, I thought it was a really great showing for the Colts against a Ravens team we expected to be better than what they were. So some good news and notes from Wednesday's practice. We'll talk more about the quarterback situation on tonight's squad show with Derek Schultz and Alan Pinkett.
Starting point is 00:07:47 so I don't want to feel like I'm just glossing over a lot of the Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson and Riley Leonard stuff. But that will be a longer conference tonight on the squad show. So make sure you are tuning into that. But some good signs from early practice. Hopefully some of these guys who are banged up can get healthy before the start of the season. But it looks like CJ Allen and then my boy, Jonathan Edwards, had a really good showing. Oh, Jake also mentioned that Seth McGowan and DJ Gidens also had some pretty big runs in practice as well, which is a great segue into our next.
Starting point is 00:08:17 segment, we're going to decipher this running back room. What could the running backs look like behind Jonathan Taylor, who has an early lead? And where is the intrigue with the five guys that are competing for maybe one to two spots behind the Colts Bell Cow running back? Starting point is 00:09:49 sponsored jobs. Already, Locked on Colts, Everydayers, we are back talking about this Colts running back room behind Jonathan Taylor. And before we dive into all of the candidates fighting for maybe one to two spots on this roster, don't forget to check out the Everydayer Club for ad-free episodes and access to a group chat with other listeners of the show, me and Jake as well. Tap the link in the show notes or go to Lockdowncultz. So when we're looking at this depth behind Jonathan Taylor, there are two guys that are
Starting point is 00:10:22 clearly the favorites because they have the draft capital that backs up their status on the roster. Seth McGowan, the rookie seventh round pick out of Kentucky, and DJ Giddens, the second year, fifth round pick, you know, who was more of a scratched player all of last season, right? Did not have a ton of run last year for the Colts, but the team does still appear pretty bullish on him. Giddens was a very productive college player who is more of like a guy that you want to feed the football to with his patience and his explosiveness. where Seth McGowan is more of a one cut and go type of guy where, you know, again, if you're going to run some power run stuff, you're going to get him involved around the goal line.
Starting point is 00:11:00 He can just plant that foot in the ground, dive forward, power through some defenders and get those positive yards. So I do think this is where the Colts want to go with their running back room, right? McGowan is ideally, you're like Jordan Wilkins type player. You're a second or third back who can get you some positive yards, put that foot in the ground, fall forward and be like a high success rate type of player. where DJ Giddens can be like, if anything were to happen to Jonathan Taylor,
Starting point is 00:11:26 you have your guy who can spell him, right? You can come in and get 15 to 20 carries and be adequate for your team. Maybe a guy who can be a little bit of lightning to Taylor's. I mean, Taylor's kind of thunder and lightning by himself, but Giddens can be a little bit of that other element of lightning in a bottle where he's got a little bit more speed and a little bit more juice. And ideally, they can get him more involved in the passing game
Starting point is 00:11:48 and let him work on those downs. But there is an avenue where these guys are not, not the answer behind Jonathan Taylor. J. J. Giddens, again, if the pass blocking is not there, if the special team's ability is not there, he could easily fall out of favor in favor of some of these other guys that Bob in the roster. And same with Seth McGowan, where I think that there is a lot to like with his, like, athletic traits.
Starting point is 00:12:08 He is also a player who struggled with pass blocking at the college level, who was inconsistent as a pass catcher and still has a little bit more development to go. So could we look at players like Ulysses Bentley, Perry, Lincoln Perry, I got to get that right. Lincoln Perry and Anderson Castle to round out the room. Those are the other guys in the running back room right now. Bentley was an undrafted free agent out of Ole Miss last off season. In the preseason, I thought he performed exceptionally well. Had 22 carries for 94 yards and two touchdowns in those preseason games stuck around on the practice squad for the duration of the year. Actually got a little bit of run in a Colts game last year. I think he got one carry for zero yards
Starting point is 00:12:47 as his wife one time on the active roster. So not a ton, but the Colts have kept. him around for year two. And I really loved his hard running style and just kind of that grit that he showcased. Also had, I think, a good dozen or so special team snaps in the preseason last year as well. So they certainly were getting him ready for a potential special team's role, if anything were to happen to a Tyler Goodson or other guys on that side of the football. Then we go over to Lincoln Perry, a player who does not really have many guarantees to his name, isn't really like a highly sought after undrafted free agent.
Starting point is 00:13:21 but the film was really good at Texas State last year. He ran for 1,128 yards at Texas State. Had a breakout season, 5.4 yards per carry, caught 37 of 41 targets in the passing game, above average pass blocker as well. Looks a lot like Kenneth Gainwell on film. I know I keep saying this about him, but just the way he moves at 5,9, 200 pounds, very sturdy, but like elusive running back. And could he be a guy who could really make a lot of sense playing on,
Starting point is 00:13:51 on special teams and playing as like that third down back, playing as like a Tyler Goodson type of player for your team. So I think Lincoln Perry is really interesting in this running back room. And then we rounded out with Anderson Castle, who had 488 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns at Duke last year. This is a massive, massive running back like six foot, 220 pounds. Huge guy just looks like a bowling ball on film, barely good short yardage back.
Starting point is 00:14:17 Kind of looks like another Seth McGowan type of player. But if McGowan isn't up to snub, I mean, speaking of McGowan, he had, what, six fumbles in his college career, only really like two, like full seasons playing at college, and he had like six fumbles. So if he struggles with ball security, you have a player like Castle who kind of, you know, fits the similar mold and the kind of rugged run style with the short yardage game and maybe doesn't bring as many fumbles to the table. So I think the Colts have a lot of intrigue with these young running backs.
Starting point is 00:14:46 I'm really, like, especially going to keep my eye on Ulysses Bentley and Lincoln and Perry because I like the way that Bentley runs is so hard and so physical and I just enjoy his game and then Perry just fits more of that third down mold than I think anybody else does in this room. But I mean, if it were up to me and this was like a fair competition, I honestly, it's hard to really like differentiate between these players. They all have stuff that they excel at, but it's not like at this like consistent level where you think they can be RB2 or RB3 for this team. So for me, I really hope the Colts go about this, like, as may the best man win.
Starting point is 00:15:25 Just whoever has the best training camp, whoever really showcases the best chemistry with the offense and the best vision and patience in the backfield when they get their carries, whoever can pass block at the highest level, that's going to be the biggest part of this as well. But whoever can just do these little things that you're looking for, I think that's who the Colt should go with. I don't care about, you know, seventh round or fifth round draft status. I don't care about only getting $10,000 in guarantees or in Anderson Castle's case.
Starting point is 00:15:53 We haven't really had the official numbers, but I can't imagine it's anything more than like $5,000 in guaranteed because he was a rookie camp tryout guy. So, like, who cares about the status of those things? Just get the best player in here. I think these guys are all in a similar tier for me where, again, if Bentley is just playing out of his mind in training camp and his hard running style is just beating out a player like get-ins, don't hold on. to get in just because he was a fifth round pick. Go with the player who fits a little bit better. So I'm really excited to see how these guys really compete in training camp, but I'm not going to rule out a situation like last off season where we were saying
Starting point is 00:16:27 similar things, right? They had a lot of young players coming in here at running back. DJ get-ins, obviously one of them. It wasn't really working out. And they had to go out and get in Amir Abdullah to come in here and just kind of raise the floor of that room. And Abdullah became the de facto RB2 and special teams player for a, majority of the season. So I could see a veteran signing making a lot of sense for this Colts team
Starting point is 00:16:50 because they just need to have a little bit more consistency behind a player like Taylor. I mean, in the last, what, three to four years, Taylor has only been healthy for one season. And it was last year, which was awesome. But injuries are going to happen with an older running back at some point yet again. So you have to expect that there is going to be some times where like these guys have to carry the load. Are any of these guys capable of doing that? That's going to be the big question. But yeah, I think when it comes to this running back battle, may the best man win, may the best pass blocker win. May the guy who just has the best chemistry with Daniel Jones and the offense win. So I'm excited to see how it all plays out. I'm personally pulling for Lisa
Starting point is 00:17:27 Bentley and Lincoln Perry because I get them like I'm excited about those two guys, but I see the appeal in all five players like McGowan with his hard running style, get-ins with his explosiveness, castle with just his bowling ball mentality. I think there is a lot of in this room. It's just can you have one or two of these guys really emerge from the rubble and be like rosterable players this season? That's going to be the big question for this Indianapolis Colts running back room going into this upcoming season. But coming up, we have more bottom of the roster questions on this Colts team, most notably at linebacker, where we have the top three guys settled in Akeem Davis Gather, C.J. Allen and Bryce Betcher.
Starting point is 00:18:09 but what does it look like at linebacker four or maybe linebacker five? We'll see if the Colts even keep five. But could there be an intense battle at the bottom of that roster at linebacker? We're going to talk about that here in just a second. All righty, Locked on Colts Everydayers. We are back to close out today's show. We're going to talk about the bottom of the linebacker depth chart. I know this is stuff that you guys are just riveted, like riveted by.
Starting point is 00:18:37 This is the greatest stuff in the world. But trust me, this matters because when we talk about the bottom of the lineback room, I mean, one, when we talk about last season, these guys that we would have put as like bottom of the roster guys were getting legit playing time last year, right? Joe Bachi was a late, late offseason signing for like a vet minimum, and he started the first couple of games for the Colts. You look at guys like Austin Ajika last year getting over 100 defensive snaps on the season. We look at Shagoo Alubi being an important piece the last few years as well. So these bottom of the roster guys at linebacker can get some real run on defense and get some real time on defense. but also they matter for special teams.
Starting point is 00:19:14 They matter for that other phase of the game that is vital for success. I mean, we saw with the cold special teams unit last year. They were mostly a pretty good unit. And it was supercharged by players like a GK and a Luby, who were very good special teamers for this team. So again, when we look at linebacker, CJ Allen, Keen Davis, Gather, Bryce Betcher. Those guys will be on the team next year.
Starting point is 00:19:35 Betcher will likely be a big time special teams contributor. So they have three guys they really like. But what does it look like at four or five? You know, with Louana Rumo, only two linebackers at a time really play on defense. So you probably lean more towards only four linebackers, but a fifth one could make sense if it's just an awesome special teamer that you want to keep around. And that's where, you know, you have your special teams coach come in and say like, hey, I need to keep this guy no matter what. So let's look at these bottom guys that are fighting for the roster spot. Let's give a little bit of background on their profiles, starting with Austin Ajikai, right?
Starting point is 00:20:08 Ajik is probably the guy who has the inside track in making this team because last year, he almost had 300 special team snap, 296 special team snaps, had 12 tackles on special teams, which was top three on the team. And then also on top of that, he had 157 defensive snaps. So there's clearly some intrigue there with the special teams coaches, with the defensive coaches in Austin and GK being a player on this roster. So I do think Ajik being a little bit more of the veteran at the bottom of the depth chart does make some sense as a return.
Starting point is 00:20:38 turnie type player and having that inside track at linebacker four. And then you get Jalen Carlis, though. Jalen Carlis, a former fifth round pick out of Missouri was a safety in college. He was transitioned to linebacker, has barely stayed healthy through two seasons in the NFL, though. I mean, just last year, he had a grand total of 27 total snaps, only 25 snaps on special teams and two snaps on defense because of injuries that limited him to just a couple games down the stretch. So Jalen Carlis, a guy who is seen to be like the answer at linebacker
Starting point is 00:21:11 at one point, potentially starting alongside Zaire Franklin going into last year, just has not stayed healthy whatsoever in this league. And it's hard to really tell where the intrigue is with the coaching staff and with just the overall like team when it comes to a Carlize because they haven't seen him, right? The best ability in the NFL is availability. And he has not been available for Luana Rumo and his coaching staff. So, you know, I think Jalen Carlis is kind of on the outside looking in right now, but we know he has the talent. We know he has the upside. And you could see a Chris Ballard like pounding the table for him if he's able to stay healthy and look good in training camp.
Starting point is 00:21:47 So Jalen Carlis, I think factors into this quite a bit, but more so on the outside looking in, because this next guy has been getting a lot of praise from the Colts assistant general manager and from others in the organization. And that is LSU linebacker West Weeks and undrafted free agent. the sixth most guarantees among all undrafted free agents in the NFL this off season. At LSU last year, he had 564 defensive snaps while also having 45 special team snaps. And then Ed Dodds was talking about weeks after the draft saying that he is a big body guy who's already moving better now than he did over at LSU.
Starting point is 00:22:24 And he's had the experience and special teams in the past to paraphrase Dodds here. I mean, Dodds was saying that like he's a ready made special teamer from day one. So the Colts appear, like, ready for him to be, like, a special team's producer. I'm sure Brian Mason was a big part of calling him and getting him here to Indy. And then throwing, again, the $286,000 guaranteed on his contract, certainly helps getting him in your building and getting him on your team. So I've been a big proponent of West Weeks making this team as, like, that fourth or fifth linebacker for, like, being a special team's ace,
Starting point is 00:22:58 kind of being your like Shagu-a-Lubi type of replacement on the team. And I think that's how the Colts view him as well. well. So I think a player like West Weeks, if he stays healthy and looks good in training camp, could make a lot of sense to making this roster. Tosh Chambers, though, was also an undrafted free agent. He was at Ole Miss last year, and before that, he was at Missouri State for about four seasons, had 380 defensive snaps at Ole Miss last year and 112 special team snaps as well. So Chambers has a lot of experience on teams and has certainly done it in the past. He's another guy who factors in here. And then Jake's favorite player of all time, Devin
Starting point is 00:23:33 Barrasuke, 66 tackles and interception, a force fumble, three special teams stops and a blocked punt last year in the CFL. And he was nominated for the CFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award, a very productive player last year in the CFL, very good athlete, good tester when he was coming out of college. So I could see him also surprising in being a special teams player. You know, I think there's a lot of special teams experience with him. And I think that's how he's going to like make his spot in the NFL. So we're looking. look at this battle at the bottom of the roster at linebacker. You look at five guys and four of them have extensive special teams experience from
Starting point is 00:24:11 Verisuk, Weeks, Chambers, and Ajika. The one man out who doesn't really have that special teams experience is Jalen Carlyse. So again, where does Jalen Carlis really factor into this conversation at linebacker, especially if you think that like Alan, Davis Gather, and Betcher are going to be your top three guys. I really think Carlyse is kind of on the outside looking in and I wouldn't be shocked whatsoever to see him be a roster cut down casualty late in August when the team is like finalizing the roster. It's just when we're talking linebacker four or five, you want to value guys who have
Starting point is 00:24:45 special teams upside like Barrasuke weeks or chambers or guys who just have seen play recently in Austin, Ajikai, right? Like a GK was on the field for quite a few snaps. What is this? Almost over 400 snaps last year, like 450 snaps for the team between special teams and defense last year. So there's clearly some level of trust in a GK, whereas Carlize, it's just he hasn't been healthy. So I really think at the bottom of this linebacker depth chart, special teams is going to be the biggest factor.
Starting point is 00:25:13 Health obviously is going to be a massive factor. But just whoever can appeal themselves to Louana Rumo and James Betcher, not related to Bryce Becher, James Betcher's different spelling in the last name, James Betcher at the linebacker coach position. But yeah, I'm looking at guys like a GK in weeks are probably my favorites to make the team at the bottom of the roster. I think Verusuk is a wild card who could make some waves this offseason. Chambers feels more like a practice squad guy. And I just don't know what to do with Jalen Carly's. So you guys can let me know in the comment section below if you think it's worth
Starting point is 00:25:45 the Colch just kind of making a spot for Carlyse or if after two years and two years full of injuries, if we're kind of towards the end of the Jalen Carlize experiment. I think that's kind of where I'm at with this. But let me know what you guys think in the comment section below. but linebacker running back. I know that's more of an intriguing thing for people like me, Jake, and a lot of our everyday or dorks that listen to it. I say that lovingly, obviously, right?
Starting point is 00:26:09 Because you love the bottom of the roster players for the Colts. But yeah, I'm excited to see how these like spots round out. Like we're talking about like spots 50 through 53 on the roster. Can guys make the team? And I think guys like Verisuk and weeks and on the running back side, like Lincoln Perry, I think those guys, could make some waves in training camp with some good performances. But I want to thank you all for tuning in to Locked on Colts today.
