Starting point is 00:00:00 We go back to the defensive trenches for today's prospect spotlight. Let's get to it. You are Locked on Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. Welcome to Locked on Colts, part of the Locked On Podcast Network. Now the number one sports podcast network around. Hello, everyone. My name is Zach Hitcher Resident Film Nerd of Horseshoe Huddle.com.
Starting point is 00:00:34 And today we are diving into another prospect spotlight for the series that we have running here on the YouTube channel and also on audio as well. You can check it out on audio. And today I am diving into a defensive end, Deney Dennis Sutton from Penn State. I'm going to give you the lowdown on this player and why I think he would be a good fit for the Indianapolis Colts and Lou Anuromo as well. Also, I want to put it out here, put it out there that you guys are probably listening to this while I am currently on my way. out to Indianapolis. I pre-recorded this so you guys had something with my voice here on the channel for Tuesday. But I'm on my way out to Indy as I speak. You'll probably hear me later tonight on the squad show with Jake Allen and Derek as well. But let's get into Denise Sutton real quick from Penn State. Six foot five, 268 pounds. One of the top percentiles in arm length and
Starting point is 00:01:28 hands as well. I think it's arm length is near 34 inches. Hands are almost 11 inches. and a half tackles for a loss in 23 and a half sacks in four seasons at Penn State. He was actually a producer early on at Penn State had three and a half sacks in his first year with the program. They jumped up to three the next season and then finished with eight and a half and eight and a half in this last two years to close out his career. Also had some decent production in the passing game and past defense as well for a defensive end. Two interceptions and eight pass breakups. One of those interceptions came actually against Riley Lennon. last season, not this past season, but the season before when he was covering the flat,
Starting point is 00:02:09 he drifted perfectly into the zone and had a really nice interception out in space. He's also a former five-star recruit as well by Rivals.com. So you can kind of see some of the pedigree as well when you look at his film. And yeah, when I'm watching his film, you know, I see this player with with long arms, pretty good hands, uses his size pretty well against 6'5, 268 pounds, knows how to use those attributes in his game to his advantage, is really good at just avoiding and getting around tight ends, trying to seal them up on the backside and on, like,
Starting point is 00:02:43 when and trap blocks does a really good job of getting around those tight ends. One-on-one with offensive tackles in the running game, I think he does a good job of getting his long arms in there, holding them at bay, and then stacking and shedding when he needs to to make a play in the run game, holds his ground very well, and has shown the ability to make sense. stops in the running game on top of that. But when it comes to pass rushing and rushing the passer, I thought
Starting point is 00:03:07 24 was probably a better season for him than 2025, but I didn't see anything terribly concerning on his film as well. Like he had some really good moments in 2025. I think he's got quick and powerful hands. Does a really nice job of using his under move and quick swipes to get offensive tackles hands off him so he can get to that corner quickly. And he also knows his limitations fairly well. You know, he's not playing like a 230-pound speed rusher.
Starting point is 00:03:35 He knows that he can't bend the corner like some other guys in this draft or like the Vaughn Miller's of the NFL and stuff like that. So he does a really good job of softening the edge and making sure that he can create passing lanes for himself or create rushing lanes for himself by softening those edges with inside jabs and feigning inside moves to set up the corner for himself on the outside. So I think there is a lot to work with here. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw an NFL team reach for him a bit in like round three in this draft because there are traits for days when it comes this player. And I think we're going to see at the combine that he's going to test fairly well. I don't think he's overly explosive on film, but I think you're going to see some decent testing in terms of the overall long speed. I think even in the bench press for a guy with long arms, I think he could do pretty well there. And I think he's going to test well above average to go along with, again, that five-star pedigree.
Starting point is 00:04:29 We usually see those guys test pretty well at the combine years later. So I think he's going to test well. I could see a team reaching for him in like round three or so. I do see a bit of rawness in his game, though, when it comes to his overall pass rushing plan. And like I kind of mentioned, him being a bigger guy, who I don't think is like overly powerful, it is kind of hard to project him winning consistently at the NFL.
Starting point is 00:04:53 But when you look at this colds defensive line, and especially at their edge group going forward, they just need a lot of help. They need to add bodies to this and add bodies to the solution going forward. And I think a player like Deney, Dennis Sutton just has some attributes I'm looking for, has the size I'm looking for, and can be a guy who, you know, when you're going down in the rotation, third, fourth, fifth guy coming off the bench, I think that he can be a guy that can bring some energy, some pop, and do some things in this scheme that Lou Anurmo wants
Starting point is 00:05:24 out of his defensive ends. So, you know, if he's there in like round four or so, round four. round five. I really like him and his fit for this Colts team. A good project with some upside, has the pedigree, had the production in college, has shown some coverage chops as well, with the Colts dropping their defensive ends roughly 10% of the time. You want to show that you have a little bit of that in your bag as well. So I think he's shown kind of everything that the Colts are looking for. So I kind of like him and I kind of like his fit for the Colts as long as it's more so on day three rather than like a late day two.
Starting point is 00:05:58 pick. I think that might be a little bit rich for me. But when it comes to it like a day three shot on this draft, I really do like Denise Sutton for the Colts. And coming up, I'm going to talk about how he fits with Luann Rumo. And again, a little bit more of that draft projection in a class that appears to be pretty deep when it comes to edge rusher and defensive line in general. But first, as the new year gets going, a lot of people are trying to simplify the routines. And today we are talking about Denise Sutton in the first segment. I highlighted some attributes of his game that I like from his size to his length to some of his ball production, not only in getting sacks and pressures, but also his ability to drop in
Starting point is 00:08:44 coverage and get his hands on passes. So let's talk about why I think he would actually fit this Colts team. You know, if we look at Lou Anerumo's history with defensive ends that get playing time in his system, with how his GMs have drafted for him. He likes big, long defensive ends, especially guys who way above like 260, 265. We look back at some guys that he was part of drafting with the Bengals and Cam Sample. Trey Hendrickson was a free agent addition, Joseph Osai, Sam Hubbard, I believe was a draft pick as well, or at least a guy that he very, very much liked there in Cincinnati.
Starting point is 00:09:21 And even with the Colt, you know, JT2 and Malo last year as a draft pick, he very much liked Laotu. too. So he likes a little bit of bulk on his defensive ends. Even with his propensity to drop these guys into coverage, he wants a little bit of bulk. He wants some length so guys can get their hands up into passing lanes as well. So I think that, you know, one, I think Denise Sutton just fits into that that archetype that he has liked in the past, that 260 plus guy with a big frame, big body that can defend the run and not come off the field. I think that's a big part of it. why I think he fits, but also I think those long arms to disrupt passing lanes are big.
Starting point is 00:09:59 If we look at how the colds defense of linemen played last year, when they weren't able to get to the quarterback, it was all about getting your hands up in those passing lanes and knocking balls down. I look back at a couple of past breakups that Grover Stewart had last year, probably his most disruptive season as a pass rusher, just because he was getting his hands in those passing lanes, knocking the balls down, and creating two interceptions as well. but also just the ability to drop into coverage also at defensive end, like we saw with Layatu Latu, getting those multiple interceptions,
Starting point is 00:10:29 like we saw with other defensive ends, getting into space and disrupting those passing lanes on some blitzes or some mixed rushes. And I think Denise Robertson just fits every single box from that regard. So I think he's going to be a good fit for what Lou Annamrua wants. I think he's a project player that Aniromo be very intrigued by. And I really like where he could fit in with his defense, It's not as a starter.
Starting point is 00:10:51 Like I wouldn't start him. Even over like a JT to him. A low-ow. I wouldn't start him over a lot too or anything like that. But, you know, if you're aggressive and free agency, you add a pass rusher on, you know, one of the top 50 picks plus a free agent pass rusher. This guy can be someone that you can throw in there at the bottom of the rotation and just
Starting point is 00:11:10 mix him in every now and then. Get some energy off the bench. Get some youth off the bench. Some of the pedigree and the production he had. Get that off the bench. And I think he could just fit in really well with what. the Colts want to do. So yeah, like I keep saying over and over again, if you can get him round four, round five, this is the type of player that I would certainly bet on and I would be
Starting point is 00:11:30 really interested in for the Colts. I think if this is like your big addition on the offseason, then you certainly failed in a lot of regards. But I think he's a player that you can build upon and you can really find a spot for in this system. Can rush inside and out as well. I think would be a really interesting aspect of him. So yeah, Denise Rob, or Deny Dennis Suss I think is a great fit for what Lou Anuromo wants to do. And I think that this is an edge rusher that we want to watch here at the NFL Combine. And also this next season or this coming draft season to see if the Colts are interested. You know, top 30 visits are going to start trickling in here after the Combine.
Starting point is 00:12:08 And I wouldn't be shocked to see a player like this get one of those top 30s for the Colts. But that is all I have for today.
