Starting point is 00:00:01 The Indianapolis Colts laid an absolute stinker in week one of the 2026 season. Let's get to it. You are Locked on Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast. Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. Welcome to Locked On Colts. I'm Zach Hicks. That's Jake Arthur, and today's episode is brought to you by Kalshi. Starting point is 00:00:36 Kalshi, trade what's next? On today's episode, we are doing our post-mortem on this Colts loss to the Baltimore Ravens. We will never talk about this game ever again after this episode because it truly was one of those burn the tape films. Like there are very, very few positives to bring out of this game, almost all negatives. And I'm hoping that we don't ever have to have a game like this again the rest of the year. But we'll see. This could be the start of what's to come this season, or it could be.
Starting point is 00:01:06 be just a one-off and you can chalk it up to the crazy week one uncertainty. But we're going to talk about it for a final time today. We're going to go through each phase of the Colts team, offense, defense, and special teams and talk about their immense failures on Sunday. But, Jake, let's start with the offense where I feel like I was the most optimistic with the offense out of these three units. And that's not saying much because the offense was putrid in this game. Daniel Jones turned back into a pumpkin in this one compared to where he was to start last season, went 19 of 31 for 61% completion percentage for 166 yards, one touchdown, one and two sacks, had 5.4 yards per attempt, was one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL this week in EPA,
Starting point is 00:01:52 in EPA per play. And also against the Blitz, he was one of six for six yards and took two sacks in this one. So everything that we said going into this. game, hey, the Ravens are going to play a lot of man. Hey, they're not going to do what they did last year with Minter's defense. Hey, they're going to blitz a lot, which the mentor and them had a 40% blitz rate in this game. They did everything that was expected in the Colts passing game was completely shut down. So what was kind of your takeaway from Daniel Jones in this colds passing attack in this one? Yeah, just incredibly disappointing. I felt like Jones, this being his first game back from the Achilles.
Starting point is 00:02:30 I felt like just that naturally being a setting in which he's going to have some rust, and he did look rusty or did look rusty, probably not as sure and comfortable as we saw him at times last year, just like quickly getting rid of the ball and spreading things around and knowing where to go with it. But I think what's really most concerning is before he got hurt last year, we already saw things start to become a problem when it came to them not being able to handle the blitz well. And we're already seeing that. It's one thing if you see it's coming and you get the proper protections in place and you've got the correct peripheral blockers getting things done.
Starting point is 00:03:14 Like you're running back is picking things up. The tight ends are picking things up. It's a, it's a failure to do any of that, really. It seems like there's free guys coming regularly. you saw Seth McGowan on on a couple different occasions just getting bullied into Daniel Jones giving up sacks. And you're almost lucky to only give up a sack in that scenario because we saw like in the preseason, a blown pass pro rep can lead to an interception like with Riley Leonard. So there's bad things that can happen with that stuff. That's just something they've got to get cleared up right away. As Shane's siking about it today.
Starting point is 00:03:51 And he said, you know, that's something we know we got to get cleaned up. I have all the faith in the world in Tony Sparano, Jr. to get our protections and everything going in the right direction. But it's like, you know, the first time we really saw that rear its head was against Pittsburgh last year, midway point. So it's been a problem for a while and they have got to get it fixed because teams know how to attack this passing game now. It's the biggest red flag from this game, I think. You know, you can chalk up some of the other stuff to rust and guys coming off injuries and, you know, and all this week one chaoticness that just.
Starting point is 00:04:24 happens, but the ability to protect against the Blitz, not just from the offensive line standpoint. Actually, I would say the offensive line is like the least of my concerns when it comes to protecting against the Blitz. I have bigger concerns about the running backs, which have been a concern for years with this Colts team since like what Jordan Wilkins essentially with this team. The running backs picking up in past protection, the quarterback being able to stand in there and deliver, and also Shane Steichen's ability to design passing plays that give quick answers against the Blitz, because this has been an issue with him going all the way back to his Chargers days.
Starting point is 00:04:57 So of all the things that I'm concerned about most with this Colts offense, it is that. And that was my biggest concern coming into the year. And there's nothing about this game that quelled those concerns whatsoever. But certainly a disappointing game from Jones and the Colts passing attack. I thought Alec Pierce looked fine when you watch back on the film, but not what you want him to be, but you give him a little bit of grace because he was hurt for most of the off season. but I mean in limited snaps he was easily their best receiver in this game. I have no clue what happened with Josh Downs usage and just trying to design plays for him.
Starting point is 00:05:31 It's like he was completely drawn out of the offense when, like, at least the Ravens were going out of their way to take away Tyler Warren. Josh Downs wasn't getting any special treatment on film. They just weren't drawing up plays for him. So very, very disappointing there. But yeah, overall, the passing game was just a disaster for the Colts in this game. And there's really no other way to put it. Yeah. You know, one of the common questions in the locker room yesterday was, you know,
Starting point is 00:05:58 what was going so right early in the game for you guys that just faltered down the stretch? Because if you saw that first drive, it went so well. They were attacking the middle of the field. It was wide open, you know, the two plays to downs. There was one to Keenan Allen, Alec Pierce. Like they were eating it over the middle and it was going really well. And it's like it just stopped. And there were still opportunities like in the back seven to have.
Starting point is 00:06:21 have advantages like Kyle Hamilton was coming on blitzes a lot. You saw Starks coming on blitzes occasionally. They were taking a guy out of coverage pretty regularly, sending a lot of blitzes. I felt like there were times where they could have got something going in the passing game there, just by proxy of having the numbers, and they really didn't. So, yeah, not being able to pick up those blitzes continues to rear its ugly head. You know, obviously Pierce on the pitch count, I think he had like the third most snaps among receivers for the Colts. So that'll continue to get better. He did bang up his wrist a little bit, but he's fine.
Starting point is 00:06:58 Again, we mentioned Josh Downs being involved early and then not, but he had his yak on full display. I think that's a good sign of things to come throughout the game. Keenan Allen, I think he did exactly what you brought him in to do. Just, you know, kept sure hands, moving the chains a little bit, has a little bit of wiggle right after the catch. still, but I don't really have many gripes with the past catchers. They obviously did their best to try and clamp down on Tyler Warren.
Starting point is 00:07:27 That may be a sign of things to come throughout the season. They'll have to figure out new ways to kind of get him freed up a little bit rather than just those quick screens to the outside, because that's something that's probably going to get sniffed out pretty quick. But I think one unfortunate factor in this whole game is, as I rewatched, I was like, man, Jonathan was really having some quality runs. Like some of those ones were he just has that really nifty agility. And the way he contorts his body to just like sidestep tackle attempts and pick up extra yards,
Starting point is 00:08:04 he was starting to have a really good day. But the fact that they were just down by multiple scores pretty much throughout the game, I felt like really spoiled a solid performance. And he himself spoiled his own performance with that, that fumble he had in the second quarter. that was just it it was early enough in the game but it really was a big problem when you go and look at it they were they were down 21 to 6 with good field position after that play at the time if you know they go and kick a field goal it's it's 21 to 9 or a touchdown it's within one score but then they get that fumble they go they score again and then suddenly it's
Starting point is 00:08:42 28 to 6 and then it basically gets out of control from that yeah yeah it just can't happen from a guy being paid as much as he is. Like, it's just an inexcusable mistake that he made. And I feel like we've been saying that about him the last couple years is we get occasionally these really inexcusable mistakes that just can't happen. And yeah, I thought Taylor overall running the ball looked really well, but that's kind of always been the theme of Taylor's career, right? Where it's like rushing the football, great player.
Starting point is 00:09:08 But then there's just these little things, right, where the fumbles, the pass protection, past catching up until recently has been an issue as well. and it's like, man, like, come on. We just can't let this just can't happen. And I would honestly say he was lucky to only fumble once in this game. There were like three or four other times where that ball got punched and he caught it falling out of his hands. They were really going after the ball and he was carrying it loose.
Starting point is 00:09:32 I think his first run of the game, it got punched out and he caught it with his left hand as it was falling down. So, yeah, not the best game from Taylor. I know the stats looked great, but it could have been a disastrous game from him. I want to throw this out there real quick before we get to the defense because we're going to talk about the defense in a second. I thought the offensive line played really well. I think, you know, the big standouts were Gonzalez and Quentin Nelson.
Starting point is 00:09:56 They were both outstanding in this game. Tanner Bordellini had some great flashes. Jalen Travis looked good in his first start of the year. Ryman had a back-and-forth battle with Trey Hendrickson. It was very like 50-50, which I think is the best you can hope for in that matchup. So O-Line, I thought, played really well. The run blocking was outstanding from them in this game. So I guess if anyone gets any good credit, we give the game ball to the offensive line because we can't give it to anybody else in this game.
Starting point is 00:10:22 And speaking of other people, we can't give the game ball too. We're going to talk about every single defender being the worst possible version of themselves here in just a moment. Starting point is 00:13:14 every day or club for ad three episodes and access to a group chat with other listeners of the show me and jake tap the link in the show notes or go to lockdown colts.supercast.com. All right, Jake, so where do we even start with this defense? You know what, let's start with Luanna Rumo because I thought this was just from personnel decisions to how they approach this game to what their plan of attack was for Lamar Jackson, Derek Henry. I just thought this was an absolute disaster. First off, Hunter, Woller, and C.J. Allen not playing a defensive snap when, look, we know Jalen Carlis and A.J. Halser are downgrades and run defense to those guys. Like, anyone, you ask anybody, like, they're not nearly as good a run defenders as those two. Against Derek Henry and an offensive line that's going to come out, or an offense is going to come out in 12 and 13 personnel, what are we doing here? The amount of these like zero blitzes with no QB spy on Lamar Jackson, how often we were leaving Justin Wally on a lot of,
Starting point is 00:14:11 an island with two-way goes against Zay Flowers with no safety or linebacker help whatsoever. It was just absurd, this game plan. It really was. Also, the amount of times I had to see Justin Wally and A.J. Halsey being like the sixth man in the box fitting against the run in like 11 and 12 personnel, no chance. They had no chance of stopping those plays. And then don't get me started on Jerry Taylor's snap count in this game. It was just a, it was disgusting game play.
Starting point is 00:14:40 Yeah. I told you. I was telling you guys all week, I was terrified of running man and blitzing against Lamar Jackson because you miss one tackle and it becomes an explosive play. What did we see early in this game? Third and 16, all out jailhouse blitz. We're going to bring all the pressure. You miss one tackle and third and 16 becomes a new first down and the cold's wasted a timeout
Starting point is 00:15:01 on a challenge on that play as well. So you just like, this is not the quarterback to do that against. Get into your drop-bait coverage like you did against two of last year. force him to hold the ball forever in the backfield and then close on him if he gets outside the pocket. They did that a little bit in the second half. It's why they only allowed 10 points in the second half. Part of that was because Dave Flowers didn't play the second half as well. But, you know, like, I was, it was just unfathomable what this game plan was, what the personnel decisions were. And I mean, I don't know. What else you had to say about? Like, I truly was
Starting point is 00:15:35 dumbfounded by the game plan. And it bare fruit on the, like, it was just a beat down, almost 10 yards per play from the Ravens offense, over 200 yards rushing, like five and a half yards per carry, three rushing touchdowns. Zay Flowers is on pace for 400 yards receiving at halftime, essentially. Zayflowers took himself out, so the game would be more fair. I appreciate him doing that. It was just insane. Like, I could go for hours about how bad this defense was, but honestly, for my own sanity,
Starting point is 00:16:06 I just don't think it's worth it. So I'll let you get a word in here now, Jake. So let's talk facts here. Over 500 yards allowed by the Colts defense. That's the most since they allowed 511 to the Saints back in 2023. I also think it's one of the most explosive offensive performances by the Ravens all time. And I think the only thing that kept them back from that are the penalties. 41 points are the most points given up by the Colts in a season opener at home.
Starting point is 00:16:40 since 1954. And then let's see, what's the other good one here? It escapes me. But that's okay. It probably wasn't going to be very nice towards them. Anyways, but yeah, this was kind of a historically poor performance. Oh, here's what it is. For the first time since the Colts moved to Indianapolis in 1984,
Starting point is 00:17:01 an opponent had 10 plus penalties on them. And for the first time, the Colts lost that scenario by three plus scores. So yeah, I appreciate the, the Ravens trying to be nice to us by, yeah, we're getting how to line up on. Jacoby Lane broke his wrist to stop the, to stop the beat down. Zayflowers reagravated his hamstring. Again, to be a real mensch, the Colts didn't care. They still went and shot themselves in the foot at every turn.
Starting point is 00:17:32 No, so let's let's look at really like, you mentioned, I think, the most important thing, which is personnel decisions. and because like if you're the coach, you have to put your players in the best opportunities to succeed, obviously. Like it's the whole Taven Brian thing. Like you can't be mad at Taven Brian for sucking as a nose tackle when nothing about him says nose tackle. You know, Jerry Tilleri to continue beating this drum,
Starting point is 00:18:01 I know in theory, like I know what they're going for. They want Jerry Tilleri coming out of Notre Dame who is like, had those flashes as a good pass rusher and was like solid against the run. Tilleri is spending more time on his cheeks or on his back than he is stuffing runs, which is what they have him for. Yeah. There's no benefit. Like even Tommy, who we have always been scared to death of having him in a featured run
Starting point is 00:18:33 defending role, I thought he flashed as a run defender even more. I saw Tommy go toe to toe with Derek Henry a couple times. and stuff. Only 18 snaps, and I thought he played pretty well. Tim Smith barely played, and that's Tim Smith's whole thing is run defense. Yeah. Like, so putting players in the right position to succeed, I thought Akeem Davis Gather looked slow physically and mentally processing where the ball was.
Starting point is 00:19:00 And he was the best linebacker they had play on the game. He was absolutely the best. Jalen Carlis played 42 snaps and was going up against a run-heavy season. game and somehow registered no statistics. Bryce Petycher was flying. Sorry, I keep interrupting here, but it's not somehow when you watch the film. It's very obvious why he got no statistics because he did not know where his run fits were supposed to be.
Starting point is 00:19:22 Yeah. Every single play. I'm saying it's somehow because you almost fall into at least an assisted tackle or something. You know what I mean? And then Bryce Petyer's flying everywhere. And so I think it's very damning that C.J. Allen did not play. but at the same time, sure, he missed some time in training camp and you don't think he's ready yet, blah, blah, blah.
Starting point is 00:19:47 Can the guy not learn on the job? Can we not have him catch up on the fly? Because number one, you guys anointed him on draft night. You said he was going to be your Mike in charge green dot guy from day one. He already is not doing the green dot. Now he's not even playing. He's active and he's not even playing. that's crazy and if you're chris ballard you got to be like okay wow uh my last two second round picks have played zero snaps on week one of their rookie year to him low owen cj allen and the second run pick before that was a d mitchell we all saw how that went get them out there and figure it out yeah like this is going down a bad path i understand it's one week but this is we've seen this movie before yeah and uh just to kind of put a closing statement on defense because
Starting point is 00:20:36 there's really not much more to say about it. Just going through some individual players here. Mooney Ward just looked scared to tackle, tentative to tackle. There were a couple players where it's like not getting his head in there at all. Got cooked by Chris Moore on a deep route as well. It just can't happen as a practice squad-wide receiver. Him speaking today did not ease any feelings either. He sounds very apprehensive about what he's doing out there.
Starting point is 00:21:01 Yeah, and it looked like it in the game as well. So not a great sign. Honestly, I'd consider putting Wally. at outside corner and Taylor Britt in the slot for next game because it was that bad of him out there. Who else? Grover Stewart had the worst game of his NFL career, in my opinion, was just dominated physically all game long. I know I get on Tillerie a lot, but Grover was just as bad in this game. DeForest Buckner's pass rushing was great.
Starting point is 00:21:25 His run defense, horrendous, like getting knocked off, like could not, like, remotely get his head in there in the run game. And maybe a Colby Wooden would have helped in that situation. I don't know. Maybe he could have got him out there for rundowns. Who knows? Linebackers, we already talked about. A lot of bad game, but he's like the only guy I'm going to kind of give a pass to because, like, the situations were tough and it was his first game ever starting. And kind of with Halsey, too, like you give him a little bit of a pass because it's his first game starting, but he was, he was, again, Hunter Woller should have been out there.
Starting point is 00:21:56 I just don't understand that personnel decision. So, yeah, just a cluster out there of defensive play. R& Key couldn't set the edge or contain whatsoever. So yeah, it was just a mess. So hopefully we never have to talk about defense performance like this again. But who knows, maybe they'll play Drew Locke or something at some point this year. It could be- It's Patrick Mahomes next week.
Starting point is 00:22:17 Oh, yeah, just that guy. Yeah, yeah, just that guy. Coming up, we're going to talk about special teams. Not a ton to say about special teams, but I think there was enough noteworthy about it to where we probably have to devote this final segment here to special teams. What's going on, everybody? My name is Ross Jackson, host of the Lock, on at Saints podcast.
Starting point is 00:22:35 And today's lockdown episode is brought to by our friends at Basque and Lather. And typically we don't devote a segment to special teams. But I think one of the biggest momentum shifts that we saw in this game, Jake.
Starting point is 00:24:51 And I'm not trying to put it all on special teams, but the Colts go down. They score early. They have all the momentum. You know, maybe people are seeing flashbacks of last year versus the Chargers. It's like, okay, here we go. But then there were two special teams plays. right after that, that shifted the momentum right back to the Ravens. And it's just inexcusable.
Starting point is 00:25:09 Again, I know I keep using inexcusable, but it really is. Like, there's no excuses to be made for this. A missed extra point from your kicker, the kicker that won your kicker battle, right? Because he's not going to home all these 60-yard kicks in the free season, misses his first kick of the year with the extra point. And then the kickoff return right after that got him all the way out to like the 50-yard line, right? So horrible kick coverage, horrible process in trying to make the extra point. And right there, the Ravens are two plays in, and they're in the end zone and they're in the lead again because of your special teams unit failing in their two departments there.
Starting point is 00:25:42 So I'm not putting an all on special teams because they did kind of bounce back a little bit later in the game. But I think that moment right there was really just the ultimate like, oh my gosh, like you can't be failing in the third phase of the game. And for at least the first half, they were getting their butts handed to them in the third phase of the game. Yeah, totally agree. I mean, when it comes to kickoff returns, the average starting field position for Baltimore was the 33 yard line. All five kickoffs were returned for an average of 30.2 yards. So it's just odd because specialty, like if nothing's going right on offense or defense, the coverage units are usually pretty good. Punt returning, I thought, was generally fine.
Starting point is 00:26:29 Rigo had five punts. his 52.6 average was fifth in the NFL and his 46.6 net was fifth. Three return for 30 yards. There are some decent ones in there. Coverage, it was very much a mixed bag. They have some things to improve upon for sure, which this I'm not so surprised about because honestly, the biggest turnover on the entire team is on special teams. You're having to replace Alubi, Doolin, probably, isn't doing as much as he was before. Tyler Goodson is gone. Rodney Thomas, like you are replacing a lot of really important guys on special
Starting point is 00:27:10 team. So it's not a big shock. But Schrader, that certainly was disappointing because extra points were at 33 yards. And then later he goes and nails a 58-yarder, which is a career long. So that, I mean, that's good to kind of rebound from that. The 18-point loss is one thing. It's at least not a one-point loss where that made a huge difference. But yeah, I thought, you know, you got some new returners in there, at least in the kickoff department.
Starting point is 00:27:36 Love Ashton Doolin as a kick returner. I would keep banging that drum, you know, as long as you can. I think he is really good there. But Seth McGowan actually had a really solid debut there. Had a really good return taken back by Laquan Treadwell Hold, but also at a 66 yarder still. And now he is third in the NFL in return yardage average at 30. 2.8. Yeah, and I think also on the kick return aspect of it, I think they had like three holds or three penalties on. Yeah, they had multiple holds. Yeah. And again, it's just like, I'm not trying to
Starting point is 00:28:13 say, not trying to drown them here because I do agree with you that like, hey, they did have a lot turnover there, but these are mistakes that we just can't have happening, right? These are, these are structural mistakes that are just like these are day one things, right? Don't hold. don't block in the back. Don't, you know, don't miss extra points. Like, these are things that, like, you know, this is what gets you killed in the film room with your team and your coaching.
Starting point is 00:28:37 And it's, there's a lot of young guys out there that didn't really seem to be the problem either. Like, Caden Curry, Tage Chambers, Bryce Patrick, those guys played a ton of special teams on Sunday. And I didn't really feel like they were much of the problem. Yeah. So it's just, they lost all three phases badly in this game. But certainly in the first half, I think part of just that confounding variable, I guess,
Starting point is 00:29:02 to why it was so ugly in the first half was not only because the defense was just historically bad in this game, but it was also because they were losing the field position battle, and they were losing just overall on special teams the entire game. It was, again, just from start to finish, offense, defense special teams, this was a butt kicking. Like, this was a thorough, thorough butt kicking. And again, the Colts were, lucky that the Ravens didn't know how to line up on offense.
Starting point is 00:29:30 Because if the Ravens actually were like in maybe a different week, like week two or week three and they were had their processes down a little bit better and they're not shooting themselves in the foot over and over, this could have easily been what the Bears did to the Panthers with the Colts not scoring as much on the other side. You know, this could have been a 60 to 70 point game against the Colts. So I don't know how you bounce back. Like obviously you have to, right? You have 16 games left and your pride has to step in a little bit here.
Starting point is 00:29:57 as bad a start as you can have to a regular season, I think. Like, I bet right now we're feeling like how the dolphins felt last year after what the Colts did to them, right? This is kind of where we're at right now. Hopefully the season doesn't tumble the way it did for the Dolphins, but that's kind of what I'm feeling like right now. Maybe some guys should play in the preseason from now on. But, hey, Colts, you see what you did. You made Zach so mad he was fine with devoting an entire segment to special teams. I know, I know.
Starting point is 00:30:25 All right, we're going to do the Colts. We're going to do a team meeting now. Slap that flex tape on. Players only meeting. Players only meeting. We'll fix everything. But we'll see what the Colts have in store for us next week. We're going to talk about tomorrow.
