The Indianapolis Colts and Kenny Moore the Second have mutually agreed to seek out a trade.
Let's get to it.
You are Locked on Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast, part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day.
Welcome to Locked on Colts.
I'm Zach Hicks.
That's Jake Arthur.
And today we have an emergency recording of this podcast because Kenny Moore the Second and the
Indianapolis Colts have mutually agreed to seek out a trade.
this off season. We don't know if it'll come before the draft or after the draft,
but we're going to look at the ramifications of that today. We're going to look at
potential replacements for Kenny here in Indy. We're going to talk about compensation and the
fallout of this potential move. And we're also going to talk about the man of the hour himself.
Kenny Moore the second. Former Pro Bowler as a slot corner, he's played with the
Colts for all nine years of his girl for most of the nine years of his career. I guess he spent
a little bit of time with the New England Patriots.
As rookie training camp.
Yeah, and rookie training camp.
But he'll be 31 years old when the season starts.
But Jake, I mean, before we get into just how we got to this situation with Kenny Moore, I guess.
I mean, just a longtime Colt, very, very good player, one of the biggest success stories of this regime.
And it kind of all encapsulated it in that Pro Bowl a couple years ago.
But if this is the end of what we've seen with Kenny Moore with the Colts,
fantastic player in his time with the team, even if it might be time just to move on for both
sides.
Yeah, I'm super appreciative of Kenny Moore's time here in Indianapolis, both on and off the field.
On it, I would say he was one of the most cerebral players that I can remember covering.
Like the Colts have had a few, maybe a couple special defensive players in my time that I've
actually been on the beat covering the team, and he was certainly one of them, along with
Shakea Leonard. When put in, you know, the most advantageous of positions, you know,
playing a lot of zone coverage, letting him play freely. There was arguably no nickel corner in the
league doing it better. I've always said this guy was playing chess while everyone was playing
checkers. You know, he was ahead of everybody else that he was facing. We've seen him make some
incredible plays. He even, you know, he still kind of got his fastball. You saw him bait Cam Ward into that
pick six in Tennessee last.
year. But off of it, just an even better person, an incredible person. He's got the
Love One Foundation. In his off time, he teaches at Cardinal Ritter High School here in Indianapolis
as well. He is very giving with his time and resources down in Valdosta, Georgia, where he's
from. Very philanthropic spirit. I think he's been the Colts, Walter Payton, man the year
three times. So this is a guy who, this was always going to
to be a bittersweet day, but you knew coming up on this age going to be 31.
The Colts had Justin Wall.
You could kind of see the writing on the wall last year, but this was always just going
to be bittersweet.
You hate to see a guy like this go, but I do hope he can go on somewhere and get on a
winning team and get to the playoffs in the final couple years of his career, because I still
think he's got some decent play left in him if he goes somewhere in the right system.
but, you know, obviously he's coming off what I would consider one of the down years of his career.
I think the fewest amount of snaps he's played in several years.
His PFF grade was the lowest since like 2022 when they went through that defensive transition
that he didn't quite fit into and he had to re-buy into it the next offseason.
So it's probably time.
I mean, financially it's nice because it's if you do get rid of that contract, it's $7 million.
dollars. There's no guaranteed money left. So it's good for the old salary cap, whatever they still do with
that after the draft. But yeah, I definitely appreciate Kenny on and off the field and in the locker
room. He's always, he's always been very forthcoming and open with me and giving me great stuff whenever
I've asked him has always been very open with his time. So I very much appreciate a guy like this.
Definitely one of my favorite Colts and my time on the beat.
Yeah. And I will say this about just the overall direction of Kenny,
more in this team. You know, the Colts did extend him.
I was it last offseason? They brought him back in the fold.
And they were envisioning him probably having more success in that first year with Lou
and Arummo. But I think the writing on the wall was always this is going to be his last
contract with the Colts, right? He would have been at the end of this contract 32 years old.
You usually don't bring back corners that are around that age, especially at a position that
is so demanding of athleticism in the slot. So, whether,
it was this year or it was this past season,
it was always going to be one of his last couple years with the Colts.
They were going to always make that move.
It just seems that they're going to be getting ahead of it now by trying to work a trade out.
I don't know if a trade gets done just because the NFL, you trade for contract.
You don't trade for players.
He's owed $10 million this year and it's a rental.
So I just don't know for a 31-year-old.
I don't know the appeal across the league.
So I'm not sure if he's going to really get anything.
on the open market might end up just being a release or maybe he does play out this final season with the Colts and then he's he's gone.
But yeah, this was always going to happen whether again before this year or after this year.
His time with the Colts was coming to an end.
And it does appear the Colts are going to get ahead of it.
I mean, they drafted Justin Wally with the intention of him being the replacement in the nickel or being that nickel corner replacement.
It's just all their corners got hurt in training camp last year.
So Wally had a more on the outside.
but the intention was to have him be the guy who takes over in that slot corner role.
But yeah, Kenny Moore, I think they wanted that fit to be better last season.
He got hurt early in the year with that Achilles injury.
And then when you're playing so much man coverage with a 30-year-old corner who hurt his Achilles early in the season,
I mean, it's just a tough situation, you know, to be able to play at that level.
So the Colts want to get younger.
They want to get faster.
and Kenny is certainly a very good player
that's probably going to move on.
But I think the tough part of all this,
and maybe we'll talk more about this in segment two, Jake,
is it's one thing if you felt good about your roster
and you had draft capital and means to add more to the cornerback room, right?
All of our conversations this off season about the Colts have been
how they get a starting edge, how they get a starting receiver,
how they get a starting linebacker.
Now you're throwing another need in corner in here
And you're not going to get, like, you're not going to get anything big for Kenny Moore in the trade market, right?
If you get anything, you're going to get a late round pit, right?
You have plenty of cap space.
You don't need the cap space by moving him.
Like, I think in a nutshell, it's fine moving on from Kenny Moore, right?
Because he wasn't part of the long term future.
And if you can get anything for him, then you're probably winning out, right?
Because he wasn't going to be on this team in 2027.
But you're just, like, lessening the talent on your team for.
for nothing, right?
You're in a win now season, right?
Like even if Kenny Moore is not like a big upgrade on your team right now and you know
that there's no future, you're making your roster worse for no reason, right?
I just don't, I don't fully understand it.
And I just don't think that there's going to be much of an appeal for him on the open market.
So yeah, we'll see.
We'll see ultimately where this goes.
I just, again, if you had the means to replace him, I think it makes sense.
And I think they do internally with like Justin Wally,
but like what you need to do is now at outside corner,
what you need to do with all the other.
And you have only two top 100 picks.
And you're not going to get another top 100 pick.
So it's a strange decision at this time in the off season, you know?
Yeah.
I understand wanting to get something for guys before it's done.
Right.
And Chris and the Colts have always honored veterans wanting to move on.
Like this could be just as much Kenny more driven as it is Colts driven.
But at the same time, if you're, if you're just getting back like pennies for these guys,
you aren't getting better.
And like you said, this is a season where it's like, I understand trying to get more assets.
But if you were getting good assets, that would be, that would make sense.
But you're getting for, you're letting go of important guys and getting very little in return.
you're probably not getting of like you're probably not replacing kinney more or justin wallie's
slot with a six round pick michael pitman junior six round pick like these aren't equal value of
player like contract sure but like you're creating these holes that i don't i don't know it's it's
it's just like if you lend someone five hundred dollars and they just give you five bucks at a time
you know what i mean they repay you slowly over the next 20 years it's just you
just not, you need to win now and you're just not getting equal compensation for that.
Like, like you mentioned, you are lessening the talent pool on your team.
And again, they haven't traded him yet, but what are you going to get for Kenny?
I would say a fifth maximum.
And that's being, that's being kind.
Generous.
Yeah.
It's, I mean, his contract is doable for like a team that needs to win now that needs
help in the, in the nickel.
I haven't, you know, seen what teams there are, maybe like a Baltimore or Buffalo or Los
Angeles. I don't know what teams are competitors out there that need slot help.
Maybe they'd be willing to pay something like that. But we've also seen that Chris will let guys
go to advantageous situations, even if it's cheaper, you know. So I don't anticipate them
getting anything ground moving on this. Yeah. So I don't know. Again, I think it's the right,
it's the same thing with Ballard. Right. Like the process is fine. Overall, moving from a guy
you're moving on from a guy a year early and getting something and replacing with younger,
but your process only works if you're hitting on your draft picks,
you're making right decisions,
and you're getting the results at the end of the day.
And that's where Chris Ballard has usually struggled, right?
So you can have the right process,
but there needs to be some results with it and it just hasn't been there with Chris Ballard.
But coming up,
we're going to talk about this cornerback room in just in totality,
because I've seen some back and forth in the comments here about some people saying
we're fine at corner, some people saying we're not fine at corner.
I'm closer to the not fine.
fine corner to a degree, at least behind the starters, but we're going to talk about it here in
just a second. It's still tax time, but for a lot of us, the old way of doing taxes is a lot.

So just to, you know, reintroduce you if you're just now joining, the Colts and Kinney Moore
have reportedly mutually agreed to seek a trade for the veteran slot corner that
verified by Adam Schefter and Stephen Holder.
As we expected, the plan is to move forward with Justin Wurter.
Wally in the slot last year's off-season sensation, who tore his ACL in training camp in the
joint practice against the Baltimore Ravens. Rookie season never really got started, but the team
is sky high on him. So he's obviously your slot corner right now, Zach, base slot corner.
This team doesn't run out of a normal base defense. And then you got Soss Gardner and Mooney
Ward on the outside. And then behind them, it gets a little dicey. So, you know,
You went and signed Cam Taylor Britt to a vet minimum deal who he essentially got run out of Cincinnati.
Fell out of favor there last year with their new defensive coordinator.
It got Mackay Blackman, who's fine.
You traded a six-round pick in this draft for him.
Jonathan Edwards, Jalen Jones, and Cameron Mitchell, all filling out the rest of the outside,
who were all there last year.
And then your backup slots now to Justin Wally are Wyatt Echler and Rob Carter Jr.,
who a lot of you guys probably did not know they existed.
So right now,
your corner room looks a lot similar to last year,
but with bigger questions, I think.
Yeah, and bigger names, though.
I mean, I don't think it's a lot similar to last year in a sense where like...
Not at this point of the year.
Yeah, like at this point last year, it was different.
But there are a lot of questions, I think, at corner right now.
And just open up questions that didn't need to be opened up, right?
Like, if you keep Kenny Moore, your top three corner,
on the outside are Wally, Sauce, and Mooney.
And while they do have questions still with that,
you still feel pretty good about Wally.
You took him in the top 100 last year.
You know, you have to still feel good about a player that you took that early,
even if, you know, regardless of what we've seen or haven't seen from him.
But yeah, now you open up that hole that you have to move Wally into her place.
And to me, Wally was probably your only, like, outside corner depth player that I felt
decent about.
Because when we look at the other players, I mean, this isn't even talking about Mooney Ward,
who we have no clue if he even makes it to the season, right?
Because he's on record saying if he gets one more concussion,
that's probably it for him.
So it's kind of like what Billy Bob's concussion counter in that
Not Another Teen Movie or whatever?
Well, it's in not another teen movies.
Well, it's one of it with the counter on the scoreboard.
That's essentially what you're at.
You're just kind of waiting for that final one to kind of hit.
And then who knows where he goes from there, right?
After he had three last season.
But not even just talking about him,
Cam Taylor Brick comes in here.
or on a vet minimum contract.
I know he's a big name and you're still banking on him,
potentially getting back to what he was,
but I got to tell you guys,
I watched all his film last year.
It was absolutely dreadful.
Like,
he would have been one of the worst corners on the Colts last year.
And the Colts did not,
I mean,
he would have been around the same with the Davian Howard last year.
Oh,
so it was rough.
It was rough.
And he's had a lot of injuries in the last year as well.
Like,
so you're banking on a pretty big turnaround from him.
And I don't think it's,
It's a guarantee that he makes the team.
I know we're hoping that because he's reuniting with Luana Rumo,
that he can be that solution.
But again, I wouldn't 100% bank on it, right?
Mackay Blackman, perfectly fine, fourth or fifth corner.
Like, fine.
But again, with the questions at Mooney Ward,
you might need him to step in and start at times.
So I don't know how I feel about that.
Edwards, if he could just find the football,
could be pretty good.
But, you know, I'm not going to bank on that.
and then Cam Mitchell had a couple good games at the end of the season,
but I still kind of think they need another outside corner now.
I know Jalen Jones is still kind of technically in the mix, but, you know, he's not.
We were talking about him being a foregone conclusion of being traded or cut.
Right.
Before this happened, and now they kind of need more depth.
Yeah, so is it a better cornerback room than where they were in May of last year?
Yeah, on paper, for sure.
But there's a lot of questions at corner.
and I would say this is like a typical spot where if you didn't have these massive needs at wide receiver edge and linebacker,
corner would make a lot of sense to be a top 100 pick again this year because you just want to get that next guy ready,
especially with Mooney Ward's age and injury history.
But I don't know if they can afford that luxury with the needs they have at wide receiver, edge, and linebacker.
So it's still kind of early, it's not even early in the off season.
And like, there's still time to do more moves right now, but I just question the overall process and where they're at.
Like, they're sitting on a lot of cap space without a lot of moves out there to be made.
And they don't have much draft capital to fill a lot of these open spots.
And they're just creating another open spot that they have to fill by the end of the off season with not many avenues to fill it.
I feel like this one calls for a player swap trade, honestly.
If you can move Kenny for just like a veteran.
in receiver who is just like a notch above Nick Westbrook at Kina, you probably are okay.
You honor the trade for Kenny Moore, but you get something to somewhat plug a hole elsewhere
on the roster. If you're just getting like a six or seventh back for Kenny, I would so much
rather get a playable player instead, you know, trying to think of any, again, this is very
fresh, you know, we're kind of responding to this very quickly. So we need to look at some options
around the league, but I think that would probably be the best way to go.
Otherwise, you're just getting a sixth round pick, like, great.
Yeah, but even a player that you would get back for Kenny would be, like,
maybe on like the caliber of a Kobe Wooden type player,
and that would probably be an optimistic point.
Just like a guy who's played plenty of snaps and is like, we'll just be fine.
You're not going to get anyone who's a stud.
Just someone who's fine and can slide into that rotation at, like, receiver, for example,
just to fill that void going into the draft.
So the draft doesn't have to be yet again so important with the players that you're picking without a first round pick.
Yeah, I just struggle to see what the compensation would be.
Do we have much recent history on like a 30 plus year old corner?
More corners, probably not.
Making $10 million over one year.
I mean, Darius Lay was traded in season last year.
And in season we know teams.
He just kept going back and forth to familiar places though.
Right.
The Eagles kept welcoming him back with open arms, you know.
And I think that was a pick swap is when I was.
want to say that was as well. And then he ultimately didn't play. I would say Jalen Ramsey gets moved all
the time, but that's a different caliber of player. Yeah, very different caliber of player. So I don't know.
I just don't think there's going to be much of a market when it comes to moving him. We'll see if there,
you know, there's somebody out there. I know people have mentioned the Packers, but they're very good
in the slot corner. It's one of their best spots in the secondary. I think Bullard plays there for
them, and he's a very good young player. So they, I don't think that they would make sense. So,
they're going to have to make some moves here.
And again, like, we're all hoping they can get the trade done before the draft
so they can use that capital in this draft.
But it probably makes more sense to trade them as a post-June 1st because then it's a little bit
cheaper for the acquiring team so you can maybe get a little bit more, which would be great
in theory, right?
If you are viewing this from the long-term approach, get a little bit more in that trade package.
But you probably want to get more help for this season.
So it's a weird situation.
I'm not trying to be the most dumer thing ever right now.
but like I again I think this is the right process overall it's just at this point in the offseason when you have so many needs I would have ideally liked this to be done within the first week or two of free agency if this is the direction you wanted to go it's almost like they didn't anticipate this then all of a sudden I don't want to say they got blindsided by like Kenny requesting this but if they started getting some talks from other teams and then like they told Kenny and Kenny was cool with it I don't know I can't speculate too much on what
it is, but it just feels like this wasn't their intention until all of a sudden right now,
and now they're kind of playing catch up. Yeah, and I think that one thing that sucks is rather
than being able to focus on the draft, you now have, you have, I don't want to call them distractions
because I don't think Anthony or Kenny would be distracting about this. Like, they'd be more likely
to just be away from the team, perhaps. But now you have to worry about trading a former top five
pick quarterback and an aging corner and hopefully getting something in return, something,
anything.
You know what I mean?
So you've got these two guys at minimum on the trade block now heading into the draft.
It's just more stuff to have to worry about than what you probably would want to with big
needs heading into the draft as well.
So it's a lot to put on your plate going into a very critical offseason.
Vibes are immaculate right now, obviously.
But coming up, Jake and I are going to.
are going to talk about potential replacements.
Obviously, Justin Wally probably slides in at slot.
We'll talk about the projection there.
And also, again, if the Colts do need some replacements in that cornerback room,
do they go draft a nickel corner for backup?
Do they draft an outside corner for more depth there?
We'll talk about some options here in just a second.
Workplace chaos.

All right, welcome back, everybody.
We are breaking down this Kenny Moore Colts mutual agreement on a trade.
We're breaking down the whole situation, corner to corner.
So immediately just for the Colts cornerback room, who steps in,
Justin Wally is expected to be the Colts next slot.
I think that was the plan pretty much all along when they drafted him,
was to be the heir apparent.
But then just circumstance worked out last summer where
they had a lot of injuries at Boundary Corner and needed someone to step up.
And while he certainly did, until he suffered his own injury.
So now just let me go over again what the depth chart kind of looks like.
So on the boundaries, you've got Soss Gardner and Mooney Ward,
and then you've got Cam Taylor Britt and Mackay Blackman behind them,
and then the rest of the mix, Jonathan Edwards, Jalen Jones, and Cameron Mitchell.
So Mooney Ward, unfortunately, I think,
he's just going to be a huge question mark until the final snap of the season.
You know what I mean?
You don't know what his future holds at starting with this team at corner because of the
concussion history.
Cam Taylor Britt,
you hope he regains a little of the magic that he had before with Loua Naurumo,
but based off how he played last year in Cincinnati,
it's pretty iffy.
So you've got two of your top four outside corners are pretty big question marks.
Justin Wally, it's not a foregone conclusion that he's going to be a hit either.
Like, I saw him play really well in the summer.
Zach, you did as well.
The team loves him, but he is coming off of an ACL injury.
So, like, we should probably chill on expectations a little bit, but he's going into the slot.
And then outside of him, it's slot, or outside of him, it's like, you have Wyatt Echler and Rob Carter, Jr.
That, like, that's it.
So you need now depth in the nickel.
and you need guys who you probably feel better about on the outside because Wally now goes from the outside to the inside.
So for me, when I look at this and I look at things heading into the draft, I mean, it opens the door now for you to spend one of those first couple picks at corner.
You could use it outside.
You could mesh the needs at safety as well and get one of these big nickel types like a Camari Ramsey.
You know what I mean?
And so the possibilities are wide open now.
Yeah, VJ Payne and the nickel next year.
And Justin Wall on the outside, I don't know how well that would go in year one.
But I think long term it could be pretty fun.
But yeah, I think to me, I'm personally looking more at just drafting another outside corner,
especially because I think in a pinch Blackman could play in the nickel.
I think in the pinch Mitchell could probably play in the middle.
I think they project fairly well to playing in there.
Maybe not perfect, but I think they could.
If you need them, I'm sure Mike Hilton will come back for another, for a 10th time with,
with Louan Remo if need be.
So I think that in the nickel, I think they'll be okay.
We'll just see if Wally can get through training camp.
But I'm really looking at just drafting another outside corner, I think.
You know, I mentioned Will Lee out of Texas A&M the other day, just a man coverage corner
with a lot of experience in man and gets his hand on the football a lot, up and down player,
but just, again, getting a guy who fits more of the archetype of what they're looking
for Takario Davis from Washington makes a lot of sense in that regard as well.
And then if you want like a higher end corner, like if you want to make that surprise
pick again in like round three, Malik Muhammad from Texas, I thought has a really interesting
profile, very athletic, really good numbers in zone and man last year. So they have some
avenues in the draft. I don't think there's really any veteran options in free agency. Like I
know Legerious Need is still a free agent, but like I don't want to add another cooked corner.
to this cornerback.
There's a reason he's not in Tennessee anymore.
There's a reason he's not anywhere right now, right?
Like that's a big reason for that.
So, you know, you probably want to add some corners in the draft.
And I think corner is the most drafted.
It's tied for the most drafted position in Chris Ballard's tenure.
He's taking 10 across his nine drafts.
So over one per season is what he takes on average.
So odds are he's going to take a corner.
But again, we're sitting with seven picks right now.
They're going to need to get that up close to 10,
I think by draft time to make sure they can get some more young players in here,
which I think they'll trade back,
but we'll see if they're able to move any of these players to get more trades,
more draft capital as well.
Yeah, I just wanted to point out some of the guys in the draft,
I think probably the potential now gets opened up a little bit.
If we're looking at slot corners, you know,
obviously D'Angelo Ponds is someone who projects well there.
That would be an early pick.
Avionte Torell is probably going to be a first rounder.
Kianti Scott, someone a lot of people really like Keith
Abney. You talked about him recently.
Dalyne Everett out of Georgia.
Chris always seems to talk up Georgia defensive backs.
Chandler Rivers is another one.
And then if you are looking at an outside guy, some of the guys I like,
Brandon Cese, let's see, Charles Demings, I mentioned him,
Julie and Neil from Arkansas.
So there are possibilities.
But I think I'm really liking the big slot idea now.
I think I already was kind of looking for an excuse for that to happen.
but now you've got guys who can move around whether they're in the slot up high as the third safety
whatever you want to do with them obviously a j halsey is is my pipe dream but zaki wheatley
i think would be perfect uh kamari ramsie jlin kilgore bud clark and v jay panne all project
to be kind of big slot guys as well though so i kind of like that idea best getting one of those
guys that can wear a lot of hats yeah you and i have always been a
huge fan of the, you know, the Jalen Petries put into the slot of Buda Baker is playing a lot of
slot. Quinton Lake over and with the Rams play some slot. I love. Brian Branch. Yeah, brand. I mean,
you could even talk, Emin Worry played a lot of slot as well last year. I mean, he played some
linebacker and slot, but I absolutely love putting safeties at slot corner nowadays. It's a little bit
tricky with the Colts because they run a lot of man coverage and how many safeties are great
in man coverage. But a player like Vijay Payne project super well with the
six three, like 34-inch arms and how he moves as well.
So I like the idea that we'll see.
I think it's going to be Justin Wally's spot to lose.
But I think there are many avenues they could take here.
It's just they got to get more draft capital.
And I don't know how you're really going to get a ton more.
I think a tradeback at 47 is almost a lock at this point.
Yeah, it is.
I already thought it was.
And now you've added another need.
There's going to be 10 or 12 guys that they like.
right there at 47.
They are almost certainly going to trade back.
Unless, of course, there's someone they feel they can't live without that.
They won't be there.
But more likely than not, 47's not where they're going to be picking.
Yeah, definitely.
We'll do some future shows talking more about that tradeback possibility and tradeback option.
For all of you poo-pooing the idea of trading back in round two, let me remind you
at least that back in, was it, 2022.
They traded back from, I believe it was spot 42, back to 53.
got Alec Pierce picked up the
Barrenhardt Ryman pick in that
tradeback. Also, I think landed Drew
Ogletree and I want to say they got like Josh Downs
in that tradeback as well.
They got a lot of picks in that tradeback.
So I think it was just Ryman.
They might have got Downs in like the
Carson Wentz dump after that.
But I know they got Ryman in the tradeback
to also land Alec Pierce.
The Vikings moved up and took Andrew Booth
who is not on a team currently.
So training back can work.
It just makes sense
for the Colts right now to add more draft cap.
We'll get more shots at it.
And we'll see if it can ultimately see that's what happens for the Colts.
But as of right now, that is all we have for today's emergency podcast talking about Kenny Moore
and the Colts potentially departing this all season.
