Hello, everybody. Welcome back into your latest episode of Locked on Colts,
probably a Locked on Podcast Network.
Today's audience is our host, Evan Sutter, and joined by a great special guest today's show,
Zach Hickstampia-Blue, as we talk through our all-time Colts starting lineup.
Zach, how you doing today?
Pretty good, man. Excited to talk about this topic here, especially because, you know,
it's interesting for me because I didn't really grow up as a Colts fan,
so I had to do a little bit of research into some of these guys.
But, yeah, I'm excited to talk about, all-time Colts starting a lot up here.
It should be fun.
Yeah, let's dive right into it, Zach.
We're going to start off with the offense and go into the defense here.
And there should be no debate for anyone out there, Zach.
The quarterback is Peyton Manning.
Just looking back on it, when you compare Peyton Manning to even players like Andrew Luck and Harbaugh
as the other quarterbacks in the Colts era of Indianapolis.
It feels like Peyton Manning just far and away is easily the best quarterback
of all time to play in Don the Colt horseshoe.
Yeah, no, for sure.
I mean, Peyton Manning's arguably the greatest quarterback to ever play the game
in general when it comes to the NFL.
I mean, he was, you know, statistically the best quarterback to ever play
when it came to regular season play.
Then even in the postseason, you know, I know he got a little bit of a bad rep throughout most of his career,
but he was a dang good player, won a Super Bowl for the Colts, got them to another one,
broke a lot of records.
He's going to be a first-bound Hall of Famer.
Yeah, there's not really much more you can really say about Peyton.
I mean, he was just a great player, and the Colts were – you know, Colts team
and the Colts fans were really lucky to be able to watch a guy like that
for as long as they were.
And even for him to keep going on and having the success of the Broncos,
I think that was still enjoyable as a Colts fan
because you got to see a guy that is just so good
kind of continue and bounce back from that injury.
So, yeah, Peyton Manning, one of the best quarterbacks
to ever play in this game.
And, you know, Andrew Luck's great and stuff,
but, you know, he can't compare career-wise to a guy like Peyton Manning.
Yeah, Peyton has a statue outside of the Casolo Stadium.
He built Lucas Oil himself pretty much with what he did for the Colts organization.
So a very easy choice for quarterback here.
Let's go with his offensive line to be protecting Peyton Manning
over this all-time lineup, Zach.
And for me, it's pretty much the Super Bowl 06 to 09 era for the offensive line.
But the exclusion here is Quentin Nelson,
who is the left guard.
But going from left to right here, I have Tari Glenn, Quentin Nelson, Jeff Saturday,
Jake Scott at right guard, and Ryan Deem at right tackle.
There was a debate for me, at least, for Anthony Costanzo versus Tari Glenn, but what about
you?
Yeah, no, for me, I actually put Anthony Costanzo over Tari Glenn.
Honestly, you know, I could go either way with
this. You know, Glenn obviously made a couple of all pros and pro bowls, definitely had more
accolades, won the Super Bowl as well with the Colts. But for me, I think it's just, again,
that kind of longevity, kind of having a guy who, you know, maybe he doesn't have that great peak
play that Glenn had for his career. He had a couple of years where he was one of the better
tackles in football. But, you know, with Costanzo, we've seen throughout his entire career, he's been a top 15,
top 12 left tackle. And probably his last two years, he's probably been a top six, seven,
or eight left tackle in the game. And I think when you kind of value the longevity that you've
gotten out of Costanzo, I mean, the Colts offense line has been so bad for so long.
And he was the one thing that was consistent, one thing that was always pretty good.
And these last couple years when the Colts offense line has been really good, he's been really good.
So for me, I took Costanzo in that spot. But honestly, you can go either way with that. And
then I also took Braden Smith over over Ryan Deem. And again, I think that's another one where it
could go either way. Just for me, I see a guy in Braden Smith where you know, he's already an elite
run blocker, getting better as a pass blocker, and he's still very young.
Where, you know, Ryan Dean was kind of the same type of player,
very solid player, wouldn't really make many all-time lists in many other teams,
but just a very solid player.
I just think Braden Smith is going to end up better than him,
and I think, you know, in some aspects he already is kind of better.
But besides that, I had the same offensive line as you.
I would say Ryan Kelly is closer to Saturday than what maybe a lot of people would say.
But Saturday has just so many memorable plays.
The pancake on Vince Wilfork in the Patriots game back in, I think, 06,
when they went on to win the Super Bowl after that.
And just so many great plays, especially coming from an undrafted free agent.
Jeff Saturday kind of still has to be the person there.
But, you know, it wouldn't shock me if Ryan Kelly finishes
with a better career than Saturday.
You know, Ryan Kelly is a great player,
and he could definitely catch Saturday one day.
Yeah, this offensive line definitely is really a blend.
It could easily be the new era offensive line versus the old one.
And really quickly, just on Quentin Nelson for a second, Zach,
he's a two-time All-Pro already.
He made the Pro Bowl last year as well.
It seems like at this point he's well on his way to make another All-Pro
next year.
I don't think he's going to regress any time soon.
He's going to get better and better.
Is Quentin Nelson already like a top three, top two,
all-time offensive line for the Colts, Zach?
I feel like it's fair to say that.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, for sure.
I mean, at this point, you know, he's only two years into his career,
so it's hard to really crown him with really anything. But, you know, at this point,
he's a two time first team all pro two time pro bowler, you know, the stats and, and all that,
like everything that you kind of look at was overall game kind of matches up with that.
And, you know, if he keeps up his play for the next 10 years, if he keeps up,
just this high level play and continues to to dominate I mean we're looking at
a at a hall of famer like no doubt you know a guy like you know kind of like what Zach Martin's doing
with with the Cowboys these last few years you know he very quietly he's been an all pro like
his entire career he's going to end up in Canton one day if Quentin Nelson could stay healthy like
that and keep rolling through it yeah he's going to be the best you know probably the best overall
offensive lineman in this this team's history and honestly maybe one of the best guards to ever play
if he keeps it going but you know obviously all that comes down to health and and just continuing
his his high level of play but you know as of right now if he keeps this up yeah he'll he'll
be the best lineman probably in Colts history. Moving on the running back here Zach I feel this
is an easy choice but might have been some debate between Marshall, Falk, and others,
but the new Hall of Famer, Edron James,
Indianapolis Colts running back, the running mate with Peyton Manning
for a couple years before his injury, took away his peak work.
I feel like he really was the old guard of a Christian McCaffrey,
Alvin Kamara's numbers back in the fourth ACL injury.
We're pretty insane in the box score there,
but Edron James is my all-time running back.
How about you?
Yeah, I completely agree you know i think you know it's tough when you get lists like this because a guy like falk may have had the better career but you know he did spend a lot of time with the rams
he didn't really play his whole career with the colts so i think when it came down to players
like that i kind of had to go with you know who was more impactful for the colts and a guy like
edgar james i mean he had his best years with the Colts.
He was probably on pace to being, who knows,
maybe a top 10 running back to ever play the game
if he was able to stay healthy.
But yeah, he was just outstanding for this team.
And he was the perfect blend to go with a guy like Peyton Manning
and all the other firepower they had on that offense.
So yeah, Edrin James, I think, was the easy choice for me.
I mean, again, I know Falk is a Hall of Famer and a great player,
but James, I think, was just more impactful for the Colts, you know,
in those couple years that he played.
Next up is tight end Zach, and I have Dallas Clark as my all-time tight end.
Just the numbers he put with Peyton Manning and winning the Super Bowl
obviously helps there, but was there a debate on your end
between Jack Doyle versus Dallas Clark at all?
Not so much.
You know, Doyle is a guy who, you know, I'll always love forever.
I mean, he's an amazing blocker.
He's a great all-around tight end.
But I think Dallas Clark was just on another level.
You know, Doyle, maybe he gets close with a couple more pro bowlers,
like a couple more pro bowls under his belt.
But I think, you know, for now and probably what it's going to end up
is Dallas Clark going to be the better tight end all time for this Colts team.
Our final position here on the offense side before he transitions to defense
is going to be the wide receivers here.
And I can't imagine if you replaced – I know Brant Stoke was a great slotter
here for the Colts alongside Mervyn Harrison and Reggie Wayne.
But imagine if Zach could be replaced Brant Stoke with T.Y. Hilton
and then that offense Peyton Manning.
I feel like that would have been amazing to watch there.
Those are my three wide outs for this Colts team.
Yeah, for sure. I mean, Harrison and Wayne on the outside with Hilton in the slot, I think, you know, that could rival pretty much any team's all-time wide receiver core.
I mean, you're looking at, you know, Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne were great throughout their career,
and they played pretty much their whole careers together, and were just outstanding with Peyton Manning.
But if you add in a guy who has, you know, legit 4'3 speed, a great downfield guy,
and then almost all of his best production comes when he's in the slot and he has less attention
his way. I mean, what we don't want kind of a factor with T.Y. Hilton is, you know, most of his
career, he's been double teamed. He's had that safety over the top. He's had, you know, help
flowing his way because the Colts never really had many more weapons around him. If you put him
out there with guys like, you know like Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison,
I mean, I can only imagine what he would do in the slot with those guys.
But, yeah, T.Y. Hilton, I think, needs to be up there with these two.
I mean, he's not on the level that they were, obviously, with their career.
But T.Y. Hilton's had an outstanding career with the Colts
and has been one of the best receivers in the league for a couple years.
And hopefully he bounces back to that next year with Phillip Rivers.
That'll be fun to see T.Y. Hilton get back to his top-tier level.
Yeah, I definitely agree with you there.
I think T.Y. is primed for a bounce back with a huge improvement at quarterback,
going from Jacoby Brissett to Phillip Rivers to replace the retired Andrew Luck,
who obviously the 12-13 connection there was very special before.
Look at the call to career early there.

We appreciate the support.
We have to get us just a second to talk about our all-time starting defense.
But let's go on to defense here, Zach, for the next part of our list.
And this might be controversial because he has not played a snap yet for this
Colts team.
He's on my front four.
Dwight, for you, Rob,
master the easy choice as your bookends on the outside defensive ends,
your elite pass rush inside that dome. But I have Tony Saragusa'm my front four. Dwight, when you're right master, the easy choice as your bookends on the outside defensive ends,
your elite pass version inside that dome.
But I have Tony Sarah goose as my one tech,
but then I have the forest Buckner is get to play a snap of this Colts team as my three tech.
If you want to take Buckner out,
if you want to play it more fairly,
I have looking for on in there.
We helped the Colts make a cerebral and was a key piece to that run there.
But I think it's fair to say is that the divorce Buckner already is if he
plays and he stays healthy, probably the best three to the Colts ever had already.
Yeah, no, probably. Yeah, I put Robert Mathis and Dwight Freed on the end.
I did Ellis Johnson as the other defensive tackle, but I also put DeForest Buckner
in there. And, you know, talking about Ellis Johnson, from what I saw, you know, I never
saw him play, but statistically, he looked great. I mean, he played, what, six years for the Colts
and had almost 40 sacks. Just a really good player there in the late 90s for the Colts. But yeah,
going to DeForest Buckner, I mean, we're talking about a two-time All-Pro. I don't think there's
many guys who, you know, on the interior for the Colts all time that can really match up to that
level. And, you know, he's still a really young player. He's still getting into, you know, his
prime here, and he's going to be coming here to the Colts.
So, yeah, I don't think it's too much of a stretch to put him on this list
as of right now.
You know, obviously, if we're only including guys who had their biggest
impact with the Colts, he wouldn't be on here.
So, I also put Booker McFarland on here, too, just as an extra one.
But, yeah, you know, I think when it's all said and done, you know,
DeForest Buckner is going to go down as probably the best defensive tackle
here in, you know in Colts history.
I did want to ask you, though, how much did you consider Justin Houston,
maybe obviously not starting over Dwight Freeney or Robert Mathis,
but did you consider Justin Houston at all for your list here?
I did a little bit.
If you're getting a little exotic and you want to kick him inside next to a
player like Buckner, I like that idea.
But just going traditionally, I thought about it for a second,
but obviously Houston doesn't come close to Mathis or Freeney there but I think it's a legit debate
if Houston has another good year there he could be one of those guys another village of sack year
that he could be a player outside of Freeney Mass you think too who's the third best pass rusher in
Colts history Justin Houston might be up there behind them yeah for sure I mean Justin Houston
I mean obviously again Freeney and Mathis I think are both top 10 or top 15 all time in sacks but I think Houston's like the top 20 uh and he'll
probably be a hall of famer one day I mean I know there's a threshold that a lot of a lot of guys
hit I think it's like 120 sacks in their career uh to make the hall of fame I think is the threshold
and I think Houston's closing in on that let me let me see real quick. I'm pretty sure he's closing in.
Yeah, well, he's at 89 and a half right now.
So if he plays a couple more years at the level he's been playing,
I mean, he's going to get there.
So, yeah, I mean, Justin Houston's probably going to be a Hall of Famer one day,
and he's not a guy I'd overlook for something.
I mean, obviously, again, Freeney and Mathis are going to be ahead of him.
But, you know, I definitely considered him a little bit because of his career.
And, you know, I mean, he almost broke bit because of his career. And, you know,
he, I mean, he almost broke the record for sacks in a season. He's pretty good a player himself.
Yeah. I mean, you mentioned eight and nine and a half career sacks for Justin Houston. I think
it's fair to say he might reach 100 total career sacks next year. He only needs 10 and a half more.
You have alongside DeForest Buckner, Kamoka Torre, I think Houston's prime for another big year as
well. But before we go into the linebacker, Zach, I want to ask another Buckner question for you because as we get closer and
closer to the season, it's crazy to say,
we're only four weeks away from training camp starting officially for the
NFL. How excited are you to watch the forest Buckner in this defense?
Cause I know you're tweeting out clips a couple of days ago about Buckner,
but I really believe the closer we get, the more,
I'm just giddy about seeing an elite presence like this in the front four.
Yeah. So the biggest thing with Buckner,
which I don't think people understand is, you know, I saw a lot of people talking with Buckner, which I don't think people understand,
is, you know, I saw a lot of people talking about Buckner,
you know, once he got traded.
You know, it's obviously mostly fans saying this.
It's not really people who know the game.
But a lot of people are saying, you know, he's a product of that system,
a product of the other talent with Nick Bosa
and Dee Ford and Eric Arnstead.
And I don't want to just crush that right now.
He is not a product of the system.
He's maybe the main reason that system worked.
I mean, obviously, again, Bosa's great. Armstead had a breakout year. Dee Ford's really good.
But DeForest Buckner is an all-pro player, and he has earned that all-pro recognition. I mean,
he's a really, really good player. He probably has one of the best win moves in the league for
interior defensive linemen. He's really hard to block one-on-one. And if these other guys do
kind of step up like we think they are,
you know, if Danico Autry can return to what he is
and Justin Houston can play like he did last year,
Kamoku Turek can stay healthy, you know,
a guy like Buckner could face more one-on-one blocks.
And if he faces that, I mean, he's going to just, you know,
be as productive, if not more productive, than he was last year.
I mean, he was a really good player last year.
And even before they got a guy like Nick Bosa and Dee Ford in there in 2018, he was an all pro player and a really good player too. So
yeah, I think Buckner is, you know, in my opinion, a top three defensive tackle in football.
And I think, you know, I don't even know if he's got to a ceiling yet. I think he can even get
better. Because from everything we've heard, he's got a great work ethic and that flow is not going
away anytime soon. So yeah, I think the potential is sky high for him.
And obviously for the rest of the defense,
I think it just helps having a guy like that on the interior because pretty
much every pass attempt, he's going to be in the backfield,
every rushing attempt, he's going to be getting his hands on the ball carrier.
I mean, he's, he's going to be all over the field.
And just having a guy like that's going to help this team, you know,
have way more success on defense this year.
Moving on to the linebackers. Now, Zach,
like I mentioned at the top of the show,
we're doing a 4-2-5 here, including the Nickelbacks here.
So we're only going two linebackers here.
And for me, it was pretty easy.
I know maybe Anthony Walker is on the same with the second guy I'm going to mention here.
But Darius Leonard is my linebacker number one.
But Gary Brackett is my linebacker number two.
The way Brackett was able to help out this team through the Manning eras
and later on into his career,
very admirable what he did and very cerebral, smart player.
Anthony Walker definitely has put numbers over his the last couple years,
but I think he's nowhere close yet to Gary Brackett.
But what do you think about the Leonard Brackett deal?
Yeah, I completely agree.
Those are the two guys I had in there as well.
And Leonard's kind of on the same level with Nelson with this, where it's hard to put a guy on an all-time list
when he's only had two seasons with the team. But, you know, two-time All-Pro, absurd stats. I mean,
I know his stats throughout his first two years, you know, are better than pretty much everybody
in the history of this game. So, I mean, he's, again, just like Nelson, where if he just keeps
it up throughout the course of a career, we're talking about maybe one of the best linebackers
to ever play, definitely the best in team history.
So, yeah, I mean, as of right now,
he's probably, what, first or second all-time in team history
in terms of linebacker play.
So, yeah, I think he's easy to make this list.
And, you know, Gary Brackett obviously deserves to be on here, too.
He was just so big in that Super Bowl run.
The only other player I'd mention would be Kato June,
just because, you know, he had that one outstanding season.
And, you know, besides that, he was also a pretty good player for the team.
But yeah, I think Brackett and Leonard are the two guys that I would have starting as well.
With the ever-increasing numbers of makes and models,
it is now impossible to stock all the parts in a traditional chain store front.
So why is it often pointed to as intimidating questioning
and wait while a cameraman orders the parts on his computer?
Choose the only brand that his warehouse happens to carry.
You have computers with access to rockout.com at home and in your pocket.
Yeah, Colts fans, you might as well go and get involved with Rockout.com.
It's going to save you a lot of money in your pocket.
For example, a fuel pump assembly at the competitor is $354, but at Rockout it's $217.
But it saves a lot of money and puts it right back in your pocket right away.
Chain stores said they're in price tiers for professional mechanics and do-it-yourselfers as well.
Rockout.com's prices are the same for everybody and are reliably low.
Rockout.com always offers the lowest price possible.
They are changing prices based on what the market will bear, like airlines do,
but Rockout.com is for everybody and does not require a membership or account login.
Rockout.com is also a family business serving auto parts customers only for 20 plus years.
Go to Rockout.com right now to shop for your parts.
And if you go to Rockout.com right now and steal the parts available available for your car or truck, write Locked On in their How'd You Hear
About Us box and they'll be sending you. Again, that is write Locked On, L-O-C-K-E-D-O-N, in their
How'd You Hear About Us box and they'll be sending you. Rockout.com has a main selection,
reliably low prices, and all the parts your car will ever need. So now Colts fans, go over to
rockout.com right away. Moving on now to defensive backs. We're going to go three corners here.
I'm going to go Eugene Daniel,
who I put up some big numbers early on
in the Colts career
when they first moved to Indianapolis.
He had a lot of good interception seasons,
so he's on this list.
Vontae Davis is on this list as well
as my cornerback number two.
He had some great years for the Colts.
I was one of Ryan Griggs' only rare few good moves
he made as the general manager.
But like you mentioned here,
the slot corner,
I think it's fair to say, Zach,
that Kenny Moore deserves to be on this list. What about you? for sure Kenny Moore is going to make my I mean anyone who knows me knows I was going to throw Kenny Moore on this
um yeah Kenny Moore I had in the slot and then uh Vontae Davis and Marlon Jackson on the outside I
didn't know much about the other guy there I didn't do much research on him uh but yeah Vontae
Davis Marlon Jackson and Kenny Moore and. And yeah, that's a pretty good
secondary. Obviously, you're probably not going to get a Hall of Famer out of that unless Kenny
Moore just explodes the rest of his career. But just really good, solid group. I mean, Vontae
Davis, people don't remember. For a couple of years there, he was a lockdown corner, one of the
best in the league. And I know he's going to always be remembered because he stormed off on the bills
and quit at halftime. But man, he was so good there for a couple of seasons. One of the best
corners in football. Marlon Jackson obviously made a lot of big plays. And Kenny Moore,
I actually wrote an article today that came out on him. So about, he's just the star player that
this team needed. That's exactly what it is. I mean, in 2018, the Colts had no star players in
this defense. And they were able to get a guy in Darius Leonard coming in through the draft
and then Kenny Moore just really stepping up and being just, you know, again, a star
defensive back on a team that really needed it.
Yeah, I don't think it's too much of a stretch to put Kenny Moore in there.
I think he's just such a great playmaker and such a great overall player that he definitely
at least deserves consideration for a list like this.
Final position group now, Zach, we're going to talk about special teams for a second. I mean,
we can talk about back to this one for a little bit,
because it's pretty easy that the decision's there for that one,
but for the safety duo here, I'm not going to break up the cerebral duo,
the Colts had of Bob Sanders, a strong safety, Antoine Bethea,
free safety. That duo together was so fun to watch.
And of course Bob Sanders' career was cut short due to injury,
but defense player of the year,
you should have won multiple defense players of the year if he was
healthy Antoine Bethea was so consistent throughout his career in the NAPA before he's let go I love
that do I'd say today yeah you know I don't think it's too much of a stretch honestly to say and you
know what again like I said at the top of the show you know I grew up a Redskins fan I did not grow
up a Colts fan so I don't think I'm too biased in saying this. I think it's safe to say if injuries weren't an issue, you know, Bob Sanders,
we'd be talking about one of the top five safeties to ever play,
maybe even better than that.
Bob Sanders, when he played, was one of the most impactful players in the league,
one of the hardest-hitting guys and one of the most athletic guys,
just made so many plays, and he was a huge reason why they won that Super Bowl.
So, yeah, he's 100% on this list, and he should be in the ring of honor,
honestly, in my opinion.
And then Antoine Bethea, yeah, he was excellent for so long.
Even when he left the Colts, he was great.
So I don't think there's too much of a debate there on those two guys starting.
Maybe Mike Adams because he also had a pretty solid run with the Colts,
but I wouldn't break up that duo there.
They were just great together.
Special teams, Zach, we can just talk about this for just a second
because it's very easy to choice this year.
Long snapper Justin Snow, he won a ring, so it's very easy to choices here. Long snapper, Justin snow,
he won a ring. So he definitely gets honorable mention here as the long
snapper, but the, the boom squad, so to say a Pat McAfee and Vinatieri there,
I think that's easy to do there for that punter and kicker combination.
Yeah, for sure. I mean,
Pat McAfee was one of the best punters in the NFL when he played and,
and obviously his,
his retirement that came kind of out of nowhere was definitely hurt a little
bit, but yeah, Pat McAfeeee 100% deserves to be on here.
And then Vinatieri, even though last year wasn't great
and it was kind of tough to watch,
still is the greatest kicker to ever play in this sport.
So yeah, he 100% is going to be on this team too.
Final question I have for you, Zach,
is looking over our list one more time,
just even though the Colts have only been around here
for about 35 years in their organization,
a lot of Hall of Fame talents already on this team and looking at the new era, so to say, one more time, just even though the Colts have only been around here for about 35 years in their organization,
a lot of Hall of Fame talents already on this team.
And looking at the new era, so to say, it's very impressive.
Quentin Nelson, Darius Leonard, and Kenny Moore already broke through here.
And those three guys, I think, are the cornerstones of this franchise going forward.
Yeah, well, and DeForest Buckner, too.
DeForest Buckner is 100%.
Yeah, so he's 100% a cornerstone going forward.
T.Y. Hilton as well.
Yeah, I mean, I think it's remarkable.
You know, obviously Hilton and Costanza were kind of grixing guys.
But, you know, in just three years, we're talking about, you know,
Braden Smith I had on my list.
He's a guy who was at least competing for this.
DeForest Buckner, Kenny Moore, Darius Leonard, Quentin Nelson.
I mean, all those guys are on this list,
and that's who Ballard has kind of acquired in the last couple years here.
I think that just goes, again, to show you that Chris Ballard's done a great job
kind of turning this team around.
I mean, we had that stretch there in between Peyton Manning
and where we are now where none of those players
were really even in consideration for this list.
So kind of getting where we are now, we're having that young
infusion of talent on this team. And we're getting a lot of players who, you know, obviously aren't
Hall of Famers right now, but you know, two, three years into their career, I don't think it's crazy
to say they could be Hall of Famers one day. I think that's outstanding. I mean, one day,
we could see, you know, Quentin Nelson, DeForest Buckner and Darius Leonard in the Hall of Fame,
and that wouldn't shock me. And it shouldn't shock anyone if they're able to keep up what they're doing so far in their career.
So I think that's just hats off to Ballard for what he's built so far,
and it's really nice seeing the new young core that they have right now
making lists like this or even being in consideration for lists like that
because that means your GM and your team is just doing things right.
