NFL free agency is a week old now, so we're touching base with you guys to let you know where the Colts internal free agents are.
Who's back, who has gone out the door, and who's still floating out there and might need to be resigned by this team or elsewhere.
Let's get to it.
You are Locked on Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast.
Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
All right.
Welcome to Locked on Colts, part of the Locked On podcast network.
now the number one sports podcast network.
And today's show is brought to you by Fandul.
Fandul is giving you a way to turn your energy
into even bigger potential wins
with a college basketball parlay profit boost.
Head to fendwell.com to get started.
What is up, everybody?
This is Jake Arthur,
your Indianapolis Colts beat writer for roundtable sports.
And today we continue our overview of free agency.
We stayed in touch with you guys over the weekend,
really discussing, you know,
the new players for the Colts who is left and then who might still be out there for the Colts to sign
externally. But what we're going to focus on today is just kind of looking back at the Colts
internal for agents. We're going to talk about who still is out there in limbo unsigned and who
might need to be re-signed by the Colts still. We're going to talk about who has exited stage
left, either been traded away or signed away to other rosters and who the
the Colts have actually retained, which of their internal guys have they re-signed.
So let's dive into that first section here.
And the headliners, obviously, are Daniel Jones and Alec Pierce.
So that was obviously the highest of priorities for the Colts going into this off-season.
If they did nothing else, they at least needed to make sure they ran it back with those two.
Or at least that was their philosophy.
So with Daniel Jones, two years, 88 million, Alec Pierce, four years, 116 million.
both of those contracts can go even higher based on incentives.
So the Colts are really banking on getting this passing tandem to where they were in the first half of the 2025 season.
Daniel Jones was a legitimate NFL MVP candidate.
And then Alec Pierce was clearly on his way to what would be a monster season.
The first player since Deshaun Jackson back with the Eagles to get a thousand plus yards on fewer than,
50 receptions.
So he has led the league in yards per catch for two years in a row now.
And again, first 1,000 yard year.
The big thing with Pierce, though, he was fourth on the team in targets, but it was a single
season career high.
So they're looking to get him way more involved, which obviously one of the biggest
things they did there is they traded Michael Pittman, Jr., which we'll get to shortly.
But they had to create an opportunity for Pierce to get a bigger role in this.
offense with more past targets.
His chemistry on and off the field
with Daniel Jones is a big part of that.
So with Chris Ballard's philosophy,
you always have to pay to play, obviously, in free agency.
But one of the biggest reasons for the Colts
why they justify paying big contracts
is not just to reward guys for what they've done,
but to give them financial wiggle room
to grow into a bigger role for what they're going to do.
So they want this tandem, Jones and Pierce,
to ascend to another level and become
one of the premier pass-catching, you know, passing game duos in the entire NFL.
Obviously for Jones, it's going to take him a little bit.
He's got the Achilles that he's working back from.
It's good that these two already have a strong rapport, though, so you hope they don't have
too much to overcome and they can, you know, pick up where they left off at least a little bit.
But with Pierce, it's doing more of the boring stuff and not just all the fireworks that
he shows week in and week out.
I mean, he runs the deep post,
the deep end breaking routes, the nine
routes and everything.
But even like Pierce said the other day
in his press conference, he wants to
catch a slant for six yards on third and three.
You know, that would do it
just as well for him as well. So
as much as you're going to see those
deep routes and everything, you're going to see
some more of the Monday and, you know, the five to
seven yard comeback route,
four yard
out route. Like, that's the kind of stuff.
don't see a ton of from Pierce, but probably going to see a good bit more of that.
Some of the other guys, the Colts have brought back.
Speaking of receivers, you're looking at Laquan Treadwell also.
Now, Zach and I have been asked the question several times on whether Treadwell could contribute
to kind of filling the gap that Michael Pittman Jr. left.
In theory, yes, but I mean, this is going into year 11 with Treadwell, and he's just,
since his first couple years in the league has never been a huge part of a passing offense.
He kind of carved out his niche with the Colts last year as a standout special teamer,
which if he makes the roster, I expect that to be his most prominent role is a special teamer
because he proved to be pretty good at it.
He was one of the more productive special teams tacklers last year,
but he probably could in spots contribute to fill in what Michael
Pittman Jr. did, along with like Ashton Doolin, you could see Josh Downs play a little bit more
on the outside as well. Certainly Tyler Warren is going to see a huge increase in action as well.
But I think the Colts are also going to look to add somebody likely through the draft within the
first, you know, certainly no later than round four, but I think round two or three they're going to
look for someone to maybe even be an upgrade over what Pittman gave them eventually.
receivers are hard to kind of hit the ground running and be explosive right away.
But they need to replace Michael Pittman Jr. and A.D. Mitchell, who they traded away last year as well.
So those two guys that traded away, but they don't have anyone new to replace them quite yet.
So again, Treadwell, my guess, I lean more towards special teams with a very limited role as a receiver potentially.
Tight end, just really out. I think this all was on Friday and Saturday.
the Colts brought back both Moe Alley Cox and Drew Ogletree.
So like one of my one or two most recent episodes, I said, okay, Drew Ogletree is back.
You don't need to do both of them again.
That's a little redundant.
But here we are again, the Colts brought back both Moe Alley Cox and Drew Ogletree.
I know they really do value both of those players highly for their blocking, which is true.
Like they both are very high-quality players when it comes to being.
a multifaceted tight-in and being really strong as a blocker. It just strikes me as redundant.
And it's like, what's a guy like Will Mallory doing on your roster if he has zero chance to play?
Because you just are investing in these blocking tight ends. Tyler Warren clearly is going to be the focal point.
But it just gives no possibility for a Will Mallory to contribute whatsoever.
And part of that's on Will, obviously. He's never become a solid blocker. He's not a big special team's contributor.
but with Moe-Ele-Cox and Drew Ogletree, you kind of just have two of the same guy.
I was fine with either of them coming back.
I mean, Ogletree would be even cheaper than Mo, but I just don't know that you need all three.
But here we are.
They've got all three now.
I also thought it was possible to upgrade in the draft as well.
Like there's some pretty intriguing guys out there that could have been a good compliment to Tyler Warren,
but also really good blockers, even in-line blockers at.
the tied-in position.
But that's kind of a moot point at this point.
The last guy that the Colts have resigned so far, kicker Blake Groupie.
So Blake Groupie, Spencer Schrader.
Another question we've been asked about a lot since the Colts resigned Groupie is what's
up with Schrader?
Like, yes, he's still on the roster, but why would they re-sign Groupie?
So mainly I think it's to compete.
I think they would have signed Groupie regardless, even
if Schrader had like was now healthy. He's not. I think he told more,
tore multiple ligaments in that knee. But first and foremost,
groupie is going to compete to be the starting kicker or the only kicker really
because you're not going to carry two on the active roster. If Schrader is healthy enough
by training camp, I think these two will go head to head. But otherwise,
groupie is going to be the kicker until Schrader returns. Either way, I think the leader in the
clubhouse now is groupy because he's healthy.
he was excellent for the Colts in the final five games of the season, didn't miss a single kick,
and was 404 from 50 yards.
So Groupie, I think, certainly the leader in the clubhouse,
but I don't think Schrader's just going to outright lose his job because of this.
I think they want to see what he looks like upon his return,
but certainly when you tear multiple ligaments in that knee,
it's going to take you a little while to get back.
So I thought it was very important for them to bring Groupie back,
if not just for insurance,
to continue having a strong kicking game, which you saw last year,
because kickers do make a difference in wins and losses.
All right, guys, so that is who the Colts have re-signed.
So far, as we know, this news can come in bunches.
That's why I'm going to go ahead and release this in the morning.
Up next, we're going to talk about which players are out the door
and will not be returning to the Colts.
College basketball is nonstop.
Big games, tight spreads, momentum swings every single night,
from early tip-offs to late-night West Coast.
There's always action on the board.
And of course, we are on the heels of selection Sunday.
I'm sure a lot of you who are listening and watching this right now,
I've already filled out five plus brackets by now.
But Fandall is giving you guys a way to turn your energy into even bigger potential wins
with a college basketball parlay profit boost.
You can build any college hoops parlay that you want, rivalry games, rank matchups,
whatever fits your vibe.
You can make spreads, totals, player props to match how you see the slate playing out.
and then you can apply the profit boost and instantly bump up the potential payout.
So go safe, go bold, ride with the team that you've been following all season.
It's your parlay, your style, now with more upside behind it.
Head to fendule.com to get started.
That's fanduel.com.
Fanduil, play your game.
All right, welcome back Everydayers.
Make sure to join the EveryDayer Club now with the code March and get your first month of the Everydayer Club free.
If you sign up before the NCAA tournament tips off this Thursday, you can compete against both Zachomy and our men's and women's bracket pools on Discord.
I've already sent out the invites to the current members to just this morning.
So the winner in each will get $100 in locked on merch.
The rest of us can just commiserate in the members only chats as our brackets just get destroyed day after day.
And as a member of the club, you get an ad-free version of the show through audio.
Again, it's all free for a month with code March at locked on colts.supercast.com.
All right, so let's talk about who will not be returning to the Colts.
Some of this is player-driven.
You know, you go out and test the market and you find an intriguing offer somewhere else.
Some of this is just the Colts being proactive and sending guys out the door, which they did with veterans, Michael Pittman Jr. and Zaire Franklin.
So Franklin had a modest salary was going to represent about.
five to six million in cap savings by them getting rid of the contract.
But also just his fit within Lou Anuromo's defense did not seem to be,
didn't seem to be a lot of cohesion there.
So the Colts traded Zaire Franklin over to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for
defensive tackle Colby Wooden.
Now Wooden started 16 games for the Packers last year,
but he was kind of miscast a little bit as a nose tackle.
He's going to be, we believe, DeForest Buckner's direct backup at 3 Tech and probably will play a good bit along with Atatama, Atabwe, Aray, because Buckner is 31. He's going to be 31 this season.
And he's coming off that next surgery that ended his previous season.
So that's a guy who you're just going to have to save him for more concentrated snaps.
So each of his limited snaps matters a bit more.
You don't want to really run a guy like Buckner Ragged.
So with Zyre Franklin out the door, the Colts have no replacement yet.
They haven't done anything at linebacker.
They did some futures contracts earlier in the winter,
but we're not really going to count those quite yet.
So right now you're looking at like Jalen Carlize and Austin and GK as you're starting linebackers.
So we know clearly that is not going to be their plan.
I wouldn't be surprised to see them sign of veteran starter, like a low-level veteran starter,
and then draft one or two guys to compete for a prominent role.
That's kind of the way I would go at this point with the most important free agents being signed elsewhere to this point externally.
So Zeyer Franklin, his spot at the mic is wide open.
It's an important spot, obviously, is the green dot the player that's going to call the defense.
So the Colts are going to really need to focus hard on that and try.
and pick the right guy, not only athletically, but that they have it all between the
ears as well. Michael Pittman Jr., we discussed a little bit earlier. Him and A.D. Mitchell,
they're void right now. I mean, you could kind of piece it together with some guys that are
already there, Tyler Warren, Josh Downs, Ashton, Doolin, Anthony Gould, if they want to give him a chance,
but those guys are not comparable players whatsoever. The free agent market's kind of dwindling there.
There's no one that really does it for me personally.
Like you can get some cheaper guys.
You could go out and get Joanne Jennings if you want to be real serious about it
and get someone who's a definite starter, the former 49ers receiver.
Or you could just spend like a second or third round pick on a receiver who maybe isn't
going to be a 60-70 target guy right now, but could rotate with the other guys I just
mentioned and eventually become a starter for you.
because receivers, again, it's not a position where they just immediately come in and start
dominating and playing at a really high level, especially concerned Colts don't have a first
round pick.
So you're looking at like a top 50, top 75 player.
They're going to take a little bit.
So you've got to kind of be realistic about how this thing's going to go.
Next up, Braden Smith, the Colts former right tackle since 2018.
He has signed with the Houston Texans.
Michael Pittman, Jr., by the way, traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, of course.
Pittman and a seventh round pick to the Steelers for a sixth round pick.
I had forgotten to mention that.
So Braden Smith, he is now with the Houston Texans, signed a couple-year deal.
The Colts do already have his replacement in place with Jalen Travis.
Travis got quite a bit of action down the stretch last year as Smith went on IR with a concussion and neck injury.
So for Smith, there's talk about him playing guard with Houston.
Houston, whatever they can do, just get your five best players on there because they're,
they've already kind of turned C.J. Stroud into a little bit of a punchline, which is crazy
to me because C.J. Stroud looked like an absolute star as a rookie. But the fact that they
have not protected him adequately has led to him looking a lot worse than he did initially.
So Brayden Smith, very solid player. If he's healthy, then I expect him to be a big time
contributor for Houston.
But overall, just, you know, happy for that guy to land somewhere and get a nice little
financial bump.
That was good news for him.
A couple of defensive ends exiting for the Colts.
Quitty Pay, who has started for the team for five years, he is signed with the Raiders,
Samson Ebukom, he is off to the Falcons.
So the Colts have yet to replace pay.
Again, you need to replace him with another starting level player, which they have not.
not done yet. Pay cashed big time with the Raiders, $16 million for year.
That's crazy money considering what you get out of him statistically, which is just,
it's not enough. He's a very good run defending defensive end, but his pass rushing juice is just,
it's modest at best. He's going to get you 7-8 sacks max, and the Colts just need more than that.
Now, him playing opposite of Max Crosby in Las Vegas, that could be huge for him,
but the Colts don't have a Max Crosby. As for Sam,
and Ebbecom led the team in Sacks a couple years ago and then towards Achilles the year after
and then was a 30-year-old player coming off in Achilles last year,
who then had a knee injury that nagged him most of the year.
So he did not look very productive at all, Ebukom.
The Falcons are going to be banking on the fact they're getting a guy who's another year
removed from the Achilles and hopefully healthy from the knee injury.
Despite being, you know, I'm sure he's, what, 31 going into this season,
They're going to hope for some productivity out of him.
They lost Arnold A.B. Kiti, they, you know, James Pierce, Jr. is probably going to be suspended.
So Ebycom, they're hoping to get some big contributions out of him.
The Colts did replace Ebycom with Arden Key.
And I think Key is going to be a much better fit in Lou Anuromo's defense that Ebycom was.
He is going to be able to move out in space a lot better.
And we saw that Aniromo is going to have defensive ends and edge guys drop into coverage a bit
and be out in space.
And that's much more Keyes game than it is.
Ebukoms.
As far as pass rushing juice,
Key is probably a bit more explosive and agile,
whereas Ebukom is going to be more powerful.
So it's potentially a wash as far as past rushing goes,
but overall contributions to the team,
I think Key is a slight upgrade there.
Defensive tackle Neville Gallimore signed with the,
Bears parlayed a career year with the Colts into a nice little deal, two years, 12 million
with the Bears.
The Colts, of course, they're replacing Gallimore with Colby Wooden, who they got in the
Zaire Franklin trade.
Wooden is very intriguing, perhaps the most intriguing newcomer that the Colts have so far.
I want to see what it looks like with him getting an extended look at 3 Tech and then probably
kicking out on the edge and some heavy sets as well.
I think having guys like Wood and Aditomo out of Bwari,
I think that's going to be really interesting for what Lou Aniromo could do.
So that should be definitely worth watching.
Now, the Colts signed a couple of safeties late last week to replace Nick Cross and Rodney Thomas.
Nick Cross signed with his hometown team, the Washington commanders.
And the Colts third safety, Rodney Thomas, signed with the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.
So then the Colts brought in
Juanier Thomas from the Cowboys and Jonathan Owens
Most recently of the Bears
Juania Thomas is really interesting
The brother of Azaria Thomas
The corner from Florida State
that a lot of us liked last year
So he has played a little bit of everywhere
Free safety, strong safety, nickel
You can line up that guy just about anywhere
But his season last year was derailed by migraines
I know a lot of people in Cowboys
boy's country thought it would work out a bit better with Thomas and are kind of bummed to see
him go. So that makes me feel a little better about what the Colts are doing there. I mean,
it was a low risk maneuver, but he might be starting for them this year. It certainly appears
of the two that they got, Thomas is probably the better fit to start at strong safety. Whereas
Jonathan Owens has been a key special teams player throughout his career. I think he's more of a
free safety than Thomas is, or at least he is less of a strong safety than Thomas is,
if you want to put it that way.
Pretty good in the back end, good ball skills.
He's known mostly for being Simone Biles' husband, but he also finds a way to make big plays
on special teams, get the ball in his hand, has come away with a couple of takeaways on
defense as well.
So Rodney Thomas for the Colts as the third safety, you know, can bind him in
Nick Cross would come closer to the line of scrimmage and then Ronnie Thomas would be the deep guy.
He played about 150 snaps on defense last year.
It looks like that should be Jonathan Owens' role to have this year now.
So at least the Colts got like some veterans with some intrigue to compete in certain spots here.
So I'm cool with that.
That makes a lot of sense to me.
I could see what they're going for in those instances.
But let's go ahead and look at which Colts internal free agents
are still out there on the market, and who makes sense to be brought back with the Colts.
It's tax time, but for a lot of us, the old way of doing taxes is a lot.
Trying to book an appointment, that's not the most convenient, sitting in a waiting room
with a stack of papers that just seems like it's overflowing, emailing back and forth
and wondering if they even really get your situation.
But this year, you are getting a major upgrade.

all right everybody so we're talking colts internal free agents today who is back who has signed
elsewhere and who is still out there floating in the ether waiting to be re-signed by the colts
or finding a new home uh so i've gotten this broken up into a bunch of different positions here
so i'm going to fly through who everybody is and we'll talk about the ones that i think i would
bring back so at running back you got amir abdula tyler goodson and salvin ahmed out there
wide receiver DJ Montgomery.
Offensive line, you got Luke Tunita and Danny Pinter.
Defensive line, Tyquan Lewis, Eric Johnson, and Chris Wormley.
At linebacker, Jermaine Pratt, Shea Guiloulli, Buddy Johnson, and Jacob Phillips.
Cornerback, Chris Lamontz, and Cameron Mitchell.
And then at safety, George Odom.
So you still got a handful of guys out there, you know, a dozen plus guys still waiting to be signed.
Here are the ones I would bring back.
Tyler Goodson at running back.
That's a key special teamer for you, a core guy,
one of the gunners on your punt team,
and he does it very well.
So when you team up Tyler Goodson and Ashton Doolin
with Rigoberto Sanchez as your punter,
those three have a lot of chemistry,
and they work very, very well together.
If there's been anything that's been consistent
and great for the Colts,
it's been their special team.
So I would not mess with that at all.
Now, I know Amir Abdullah was productive.
He's a great kick returner for them.
but, I mean, he's another year older.
If you don't find someone else who's a good kicker turner,
sure, go ahead and do it.
It's no biggie.
He's going to be cheap.
But certainly you would like to find a younger explosive option there.
On offensive line, go ahead and bring back both Luke Tenuda and Danny Pinter.
We've seen Pinter play very strong for the Colts before as a backup center.
He is smart and he can handle it.
I mean, he's a bit undersized, obviously,
but anytime he has started for them at center,
he's not really been an issue.
He gets the job done, and it's fine.
And honestly, sometimes that's the bar.
You know, you're hardly ever going to get backup offensive linemen
who are spectacular.
You just don't want them to screw things up,
and Danny Pinter is not going to screw things up.
Luke Tenuda, at this point, like the Colts need guys
to come in and compete to be the swing tackle.
And Luke Tenuda did have to play.
a good bit last year when Bernard Reimann was banged up down the stretch with his elbow
entry. I thought Tenuda looked perfectly fine when he was out there. I certainly wouldn't,
I wouldn't trust him to be a starter and see him like in long extended action right now.
But considering what else the Colts have at swing tackle, Blake Freeland, Byron Matos,
shoot, who else, Jack Wilson, like they don't really have anything else. So get Luke Tanita in there.
keep adding guys either in free agency or the draft like just have quality competition in there
i at least feel like to new to his quality competition even if he doesn't win the job whatever
but like you need the best candidates possible because swing tackles a super important job
on the colts roster because their tackles missed time um the defensive linemen i think i would
just go ahead and let them all walk at linebacker uh go ahead and bring back jermaine pratt shay goo
Alubi and Buddy Johnson.
Alubi and Johnson are both really strong special teamers.
Very productive at getting to the return man.
So they don't do anything for me defensively necessarily,
but they are good at special teams.
And that's important.
I know every acquisition that your team makes,
fans want them to be like a swing for the fences
or for them to be a great all-around player.
It's just not realistic.
Most players are just role.
players. So Alubi and Buddy Johnson, strong role players on special teams. That's why I would want them
back. Pratt, the Colts have not done anything at linebacker other than lose guys to this point.
And there's no one really on the free agent market that does it for me as much as Pratt would.
So Pratt already very good chemistry with Lou Anirumo knows how to play that defense and honestly
had one of his strongest seasons last year. After being cut by the Raiders and signing on
in season with the Colts, Pratt had a very, very strong year. The best mistackle rate of his entire
career as well, only like 5%. So Pratt was a very strong player. I still would go through the
draft and get a young guy or two as well, but I really don't think it's realistic that
Lou Aniromo is going to throw a linebacker group full of rookies out there. He's going to want
at least one guy starting who he knows and trusts already.
So at this point, I think that best case scenario is Pratt.
George Odomit's safety.
I would just let him go.
I thought he would contribute more than he did late last year with Ashton Doolinhert,
and he didn't.
Like, the Colts hardly used him.
So I don't see what the point of that would be anymore.
So you can go ahead and let George Odom walk.
But for the sake of competition and having guys that have played at Corner,
I would bring both Chris Lamont's and Cameron Mitchell back.
Lamont, his season ended last year, I think, with a foot injury.
But when he was out there, he was, he played very well.
In the preseason, he really stood out.
But then when the bullets were really flying and it mattered,
when Kenny Moore got banged up and Mike Hilton got banged up as well,
Chris Lamonts played a lot and he played really, really well.
So I would bring him back just for the depth.
You just want to have as many quality guys battling for even the bottom.
of your roster spots. It makes your team better. And I think Lamontz is certainly someone who
is going to be better than probably even a couple of the guys ahead of him. Same logic there with
Cameron Mitchell. A guy the Colts got off waivers last year, he's a veteran who's played a good
bit of football can play outside corner. Again, he's probably not going to make the roster,
but you want to have strong competition at the bottom. He would be better than at least a couple
the guys they have on the corner depth chart right now at the bottom of it.
So I'm intrigued by Cameron Mitchell.
Again, I don't care if he makes the roster or not.
I just want experienced guys who know what they're doing competing for those roles.
So that is where we stand as far as Colts internal free agency goes.
Things could always change.
There's news being made across the NFL right now.
Like as I've been talking, Justin Fields was traded from the Jets to the chief.
