Episode Date: September 20, 2019There is no Iowa football this week so we do a full breakdown of the big games in the Big Ten, and we even spend a bit of time arguing about how good (re: bad) of a team Rutgers is. Our big questions ...are will either Michigan or Wisconsin stand out, can Michigan State vs Northwestern actually entertain us with scoring (most likely not), and can Nebraska win on the road in the Big Ten? I thank God I was born on the good arms of the Midwest, and not on the battlefields of
the U.S.
It's a time of panic, and it's intercepted!
It's picked off right away!
Intercepted by Marty Hooker!
Pick six!
Eight seconds into the game!
Buffen sets up deep in the pocket, goes down the field for Smith!
Oh!
He's got it!
Smith!
Touchdown.
85 yards.
High on.
Touchdown, 10.
Taking a shot in the end zone.
It is caught.
No offense.
Touchdown.
That's either one or you have it.
Go ahead and three.
Yes.
Two-point lead for the Hawkeyes podcast,
your daily podcast covering your Iowa Hawkeyes on the Lockdown Sports Network.
I'm one of your hosts, Andrew Wade, and I'm joined here by my co-host, Zach Cohen.
There is no Iowa football this weekend, but that doesn't mean we can't cover the Big Ten,
and we're going to be doing that all day today on today's episode.
Zach, you ready to talk about some Big Ten football, man?
Oh, yeah.
Hell yeah, dude.
Well, like I said, there's some good games.
The Michigan-Wisconsin game is one that we covered a little bit
on yesterday's episode.
We're going to be covering it more today, and like I said,
we're going to be basically going through the entire Big Ten slate,
giving you our picks and predictions on that.
I know we've been wanting to track some of this stuff down to see who's in the lead.
I know I haven't been doing very well, but last week, Zach, I think I crushed it.
I called the Maryland game.
I'm pretty happy about that.
You did.
You did.
I thought that was a pretty good one for me.
There's also some other games, though, that we're going to talk about today, and hopefully
we can get a chance to go back and see what our rankings are so far against each other and see
the real winner is of these big 10 picks and predictions um for today's show though if you

And just like we wanted to say,
thank you again for everyone with all the support we've had.
It's been great lately and excited to give some stuff away.
Hey man,
we have,
that should be up for the whole weekend.
So make sure to do it this weekend.
Again,
if you aren't following us on
twitter you don't have a twitter account get a twitter account follow us on twitter we got some
great stuff going on on that twitter account also we are trying to get that facebook and instagram
page up as well and running so the more you can follow that stuff the more content we're going to
put out there as well but let's jump into the big 10 this week some great games coming up we're going
to get a chance to really understand what the Big Ten looks like because we do have some conference games. We also have some teams that
are just out of the picture this week. Obviously, Iowa is on their bye week. Minnesota is on their
bye week. I'm trying to check and see. There are a few other teams that are on their bye week this
week. We'll cover that. We have some great conference games, though. Let's just kick it off
with the main one, man. it is Michigan versus Wisconsin all right
I'm going to pull up the spread here and I want to get your thoughts on this game right now Wisconsin
is actually giving three and a half points the over under on this game is 43 both of these teams
are undefeated Michigan is ranked number 11 and Wisconsin is number 13 in the nation. What are you doing here, man? What are you taking?
Um,
so I think that both,
I don't want to say they're even,
I watched Wisconsin.
They dominated.
I've seen Michigan state play middle Tennessee,
like who are playing in next week.
And they actually really struggled against them.
And I don't know,
Michigan doesn't look great.
I don't know what it is about them.
Shea Patterson looks uneasy.
They literally almost lost to should have lost to Army last week so there's that or a week or two ago but so that's one issue there I think that these are kind of
evenly matched I like Wisconsin but the fact that they haven't played a power five team yet is kind
of concerning but the way they've literally been winning at the highest level,
scoring over a hundred points and giving up zero points in the first two
weeks. I mean, I don't really know much more.
You can ask where Alabama is not even doing that and they've played some
terrible teams. So there's a point there.
So I'm going to take Wisconsin here. I would tease it to get three points.
I think three and a half points is weird.
I think it could be a field goal game, a low scoring game, but I think Wisconsin wins. It's going to be at
home. That field is Camp Randall is electric. Jump around. It's going to be packed. It's going
to be a nationally televised game. I mean, I think it's kind of the home team that wins this game,
so I don't know what you think. Yeah, man. I can't tell if it's my bias or not.
I just don't really believe in this Wisconsin team.
I think Jonathan Taylor is an absolute beast.
They lost a lot of offensive linemen last year.
Also, they're replacing their starting quarterback, Alex Hornibrook.
I never thought he was very good, but Jack Cohn is like Alex Hornibrook light.
Yeah, I mean, they're both bad.
I'm actually really worried once Graham Mertz gets kind of up to speed
and they actually have him playing likely next year or the year after.
But I don't like this Wisconsin offense.
They haven't done anything.
They haven't beaten any teams yet.
Yes, they beat them pretty badly, but they have not played a Power 5 school yet.
But on the flip side, Michigan hasn't really looked that great either.
Like you said, they barely beat Army 24-21 in overtime.
They beat Middle Tennessee 41-20. So not a bad win, but not exactly what you would expect. said they barely beat army 24 to 21 in overtime they beat middle tennessee 41 to 20 you know so
not a bad win but not exactly what you would expect it was the first game of the season though
and as we've seen before i believe penn state almost lost appalachian state was it last year
two years ago we've seen michigan lose to appalachian state i mean the first game of the
season is kind of tough yeah yeah god that was those two men. Thank God.
We blocked two field goals. Can you imagine?
North Dakota state and Carson once.
Can you imagine how different that season would have been at Iowa lost in
Northern Iowa? I mean,
that was a magical season that could have been ruined by an FCS school an
hour away.
Yeah, I completely agree. That sucked. That'd have been tough.
I was going to say,
do you
not believe
in Wisconsin more
than you believe in Shea Patterson?
Does that make sense?
Which one do I believe in more?
Yeah, so do you...
I believe in Shea Patterson more.
You do? I do.
I think he hasn't really played that well this year,
but he also hasn't had really that many opportunities right now.
He's thrown for 410 yards in two games,
three touchdowns,
no interceptions.
He does,
he can run,
but he hasn't really done much with his legs this year either.
I do think the offense is kind of getting off to a slow start.
Donovan people Jones is injured.
So that's also kind of a concern as well.
They got the new OC, and Peoples-Jones is a big injury.
He's really good.
They got the new OC, though, and they kind of are spreading it out more.
They're not really running it as much, and they still have Tariq Black
and all these good receivers.
I mean, to be honest, I mean, one of us is going to be proved right on that game.
You think I'm taking Michigan?
Ooh, are you taking Michigan?
Oh, yeah, I'm just screwing with you.
I'm definitely taking Michigan.
Oh, I think you're going to see who is real.
Is Jack Cohn, can he win a big game?
Or can Shea Patterson win a big game?
If Shea Patterson, you know,
loses by over two touchdowns
to a predominantly running team,
that's going to look terrible.
Michigan's going to drop
and they're going to be out of actually the national title football,
no, college football playoffs.
So I think that that game is going to tell a lot.
Also, like I said, it's interesting for the Big Ten West, obviously.
So, I mean, keep an eye out on that.
If Wisconsin loses, that kind of helps us out,
gives us a little more room.
I think another interesting game on this uh slate um I
wouldn't say it's interesting but Nebraska's playing U of I at U of I um I thought U of I
was decent um they are actually holy crap U of I is at home and they've been favored in the last
couple games but they're actually giving uh 10 no, they're getting 13 points at home against Nebraska.
So Nebraska is a 13 point favorite at U of I. Man, I, U of I, I thought they're going to win
last week against Eastern Michigan. They look terrible. Their kicker looks good. He nailed
like a 57 yarder. It was actually insane. I've never seen a college kicker do that, but man,
Peters didn't look good. I really liked them. I thought U of I had a chance to make a bowl game this year.
I thought they were going to be sneaky good.
And losing to Eastern Michigan is just not it,
especially with a Big Ten division that they already struggle with enough.
Losing out of conference game is terrible.
Nebraska, I'm going to say they came back.
They whipped butt against Northern Illinois.
So, I think they're rolling.
I mean, it would be kind of interesting.
I don't see this game being close, but if it is close, I mean,
Nebraska can't afford to lose this game at all.
So it would be interesting to see does Illinois bounce back after this game?
Does Nebraska overlook Illinois?
I mean, I think we both know Nebraska wins, but, I mean,
it would be pretty interesting.
Yeah, man.
I do have some thoughts on that, but real quick,
I want to make sure our listeners know about a fantastic platform

With those savings, you might be able to make the Iowa versus Penn State game
after all.
All right, man.
So kind of on my thoughts about the Illinois game.
We were covering that before we took a quick break to give a few messages
from our sponsors.
Illinois versus Nebraska.
I'm taking Nebraska to – you know, I'm taking Illinois to cover, but I think Nebraska is going to win.
I don't think Illinois is a good team. They, again, they haven't really beaten anyone, right?
They beat UConn 31 to 23. UConn is not a football program. They beat Akron. No one gives a crap.
And they lost to Eastern Michigan. Not a very good team. I think Illinois is the same Illinois
that we've seen for a while,
Brandon Peters and all not.
I mean, he's a former four-star recruit.
I think he does add a different element to this offense,
and he really didn't play all that – I mean, he played worse
than he normally did against Eastern Michigan,
but still threw for almost 300 yards and two touchdowns.
I think he does add a different element to this Illinois team
that we haven't seen in the past.
Reggie Corbin looks back to know, back to his, you know, full, you know,
basically his self.
I do think Nebraska is the team that we thought they were,
that we Iowa football fans thought they were.
They're a solid offensive team. Their defense,
it's looked decent this season,
but I think their defense is really a joke.
Their offense does have some talented playmakers.
Their offensive line is really young though,
and not really gelling that much, not givingrian martinez that much time like i said i think
nebraska wins this game i don't think they cover the spread and what'd you say it was 14 is that
what you said 13 13 yeah i think illinois keeps it close um looks kind of bad nebraska i do think
nebraska wins though yeah i'm gonna to take Nebraska to win. I think they
win by 14, but man, I would love to see them lose. I'll tell you that. Yeah, it's just one of those
teams. I just love to hate them and I would love to see Illinois beat them. That would be a lot of
fun. Another game in the Big Ten Northwestern versus Michigan State. This could be a really
ugly game. Michigan State's offense looked just absolutely garbage
against Arizona State.
Northwestern playing with their backup quarterback,
obviously coming off a win last week after losing to Stanford.
I'll be interested to see how they look against Michigan State.
I'm going to try to pull up the line.
Do you have any thoughts on this game right now?
Yeah, so actually northwestern is uh
getting nine and a half points at home which is nine and a half holy crap i don't think michigan
skate state scored nine and a half why are they're getting more points than michigan state scored
last game against an arizona state team that's not great either they don't have a solid defense
there's nothing whatever dude i mean nine points is a solid defense. There's nothing, whatever. Dude,
I mean... 99 points is a lot
for a team, like you said, can't even score 99.
Maybe Northwestern to cover. Michigan State
looks terrible. Their defense looks good, but
man, nine and a half. I mean, I think if Michigan
State wins by a touchdown, that's a lot.
I just... Lewerke
looks terrible, and as we said before,
Ryan Field is kind of like it has a
soldier field element where it's terrible. The grass is kind of of long it's not great to run on in the home team the bears
the wildcats they also have this like home field advantage because they practice on it so i think
that it makes you run a lot slower so i think that michigan state is i think it's already pretty much
a slow team so adding them on the grass, their offense is going to look awful.
If you are hungover Saturday, if you're tired, you're trying to take a nap
and there's no golf on, put this game on.
You'll go to bed right away.
It'll be wake up.
It'll be nice.
You'll feel rested, and it'll probably be 7-3, and you won't miss anything.
This is definitely a game that you really have to like football to watch it.
Give me Northwestern plus 9.5 at home.
Michigan State sucks.
Yeah, man, I'm taking Northwestern as well, nine and a half.
I think Northwestern could win this game as well.
I just don't think what we saw last week from Michigan State's offense
was just not good.
I mean, they ran the ball well.
They just couldn't really punch it in in the red zone.
From a Northwestern perspective, man, Hunter Johnson does not look
like a five-star recruit.
Yeah, I talk so highly of a dude i don't
know what happened yeah he like it is just not really impressive um even this last weekend's
unlv 12 to 25 165 yards one touchdown one interception against for the week before
6 to 17 for 55 yards and two interceptions um not impressive no wonder he freaking lost his
job to trevor lawrence
he would have lost his job to tyler wiegers at this point he was rated above trevor lawrence
and two i'm pretty sure in that in that thing was a trevor lawrence the number one recruit in the
nation so it was he was rated oh he's rated above jake from and tua i guess yeah because he would
have been a five star the same year because you see that though isn't that insane like i thought
he's in a good northwestern that northwestern is gonna be been a five-star the same year. Because you see that, though? Isn't that insane? Like, I thought he was going to go to Northwestern.
I thought Northwestern was going to be running a track meet on the field.
And they just – I don't know what's happening.
I don't know if he's just getting – granted, let's not –
it was only a second game.
He only played half the game against Stanford.
So, I don't want to jump to conclusions.
We obviously are giving Shea Patterson and Jack Cohen a little bit of a grace period.
So, we should give Hunter Johnson a little bit but I'll tell you what preemptively going into this Big Ten
schedule I'm not really nervous to play Northwestern I hope I don't eat my words I
I just don't think they look that great but you know against the Michigan State team
I mean everyone's like oh Michigan State's mad though they just lost they may come they may try
and blow them out but I don't think Michigan State's mad, though. They just lost. They may come. They may try and blow them out.
But I don't think Michigan State's blowing out a high school team.
They just don't have the offensive work.
He literally is terrible.
I'd rather have a wildcat back there than running back taking direct snaps.
So, yeah.
Yeah, man.
I will never underestimate Northwestern.
I freaking hate them, but they somehow find a way to win.
He does.
Yeah.
The over-under is 39 for this game.
I would absolutely take the under on this.
Yeah, I mean, 17-10.
Yeah, it's just – God, it's going to be an uglier game.
That's high scoring.
It's high.
Uglier than Iowa versus Iowa State, and that's really saying something
because Iowa-Iowa State is usually a pretty ugly game.
Oh, my gosh.
If it even rains or sprinkles on that field too,
they're not going to move anywhere.
I hope it's a nice day in Chicago.
I'm serious, man.
Any rain that feels poor up.
Absolutely, man.
But, hey, we're going to take a quick break
and then jump into the last remaining games of the Big Ten schedule.
Before we do that, though, make a memory that lasts a lifetime
and let the Vivid Seats app help you get to your favorite live event.
Enter promo code KICKOFF at checkout to receive a discount up to $100.
You have to take advantage of that savings it's fantastic 100 he lets you get to an extra iowa football game this
year all right man we are back we have three more games to cover again a couple teams are out this
week we do have yukon versus indiana to cover we have boston college versus rutgers and miami of
ohio versus ohio state kind of saving the worst games for last let's start with the ohio ohio UConn versus Indiana to cover. We have Boston College versus Rutgers. And Miami of Ohio versus Ohio State.
Kind of saving the worst games for last.
Let's start with Ohio State versus Miami of Ohio.
This is obviously going to be a win.
We saw what Miami of Ohio can bring to the game, and not a lot.
I was actually impressed by Blaine Gabbert's brother, Brett Gabbert,
actually had a pretty good game against Iowa.
I thought he played pretty well.
They do have some good receivers, some tall receivers.
But Ohio State, they're playing like they're freaking pissed off about something. actually had a pretty good game against Iowa. I thought he played pretty well. They do have some good receivers and tall receivers,
but Ohio State, they're playing like they're freaking pissed off about something.
I don't know if it was the fact they were kind of underestimated coming into the season, but they just look real mad,
and they look like they want to beat up on every single team
they possibly can get to.
But guess what the line is – or you probably already have it up,
but the line is 39-and-a-half.
Tell our listeners.
That is absurd.
I don't care who the hell you are.
39 and a half?
I don't know, man.
That's a tough one to take for me.
Andrew, give me the line.
Iowa State minus 39.
Justin Fields has a chip on his shoulder.
The NCAA, the AP poll, they did this to him.
They created a monster.
They really screwed Iowa in the Big Ten.
No one expected Justin Fields to do a lot.
And all the player rankings this year, they had him so low.
They had all these players ahead of him.
We don't know what he's going to do.
He's a transfer.
Is he going to be in the offense?
Is Ryan Day going to be a good coach?
Are they going to scheme for him properly?
Dude, they're blowing people out.
I don't even beat teams this much in Madden.
And I'm pretty good at Madden.
So I just don't understand why you put a
chip on the shoulder of this like five-star quarterback recruit from Georgia. Why are you
going to give this kid more motivation to play? It's so stupid. They're going to blow him out.
They're going to win by 40. Miami of Ohio lost by 22 to a Cincinnati team that got embarrassed
by Ohio State. So can you imagine what Ohio State's going to do to Miami, Ohio,
at home in the horseshoe?
Oh, my gosh.
I think they better have a slaughter rule.
This could be like a literally game when you win like 20-0
and they make all the kids go home and grab the snacks.
I mean, I will say it is a little bit ridiculous.
I don't understand where the hate was coming for Justin Fields.
Just because he didn't play for you.
Dude, the the guy out his
senior year of high school a top rated dual threat quarterback he wasn't playing because he's playing
behind one of the top five quarterbacks in the nation yeah so I don't know um I'm gonna I'm
gonna take Miami to cover only for this reason I think going into Big Ten play after this, Ohio State is going to rest their starters a lot earlier.
It's a look-ahead game you're saying.
Yeah, absolutely.
I think they play this game, they rest their starters,
they get ready for Nebraska the following week.
They've got to head to Lincoln.
So I think they're going to get up by 30 in the third quarter and say,
screw it, we can beat these guys with our second string.
And I think they probably might even still put up a few touchdowns.
But I'm taking Miami to cover Ohio State to kill them yeah speaking of uh bad teams
what about this uh UConn Indiana game wow Indiana usually puts up a fight at home too with the brand
new locker room everyone's swagged out everyone's got the juice they're pumped up I think they got
their swagger back no they didn't They got smushed like a fly
It was disgusting
Same old Hoosiers team
Absolutely embarrassed
Oh they have Peyton Ramsey
They have that other transfer quarterback
They could be decent
They could make a bowl game
They're still 2-1
Can't eat too much
They still can make a bowl game
They'll probably make like the
The freaking
The FedEx bowl or something The gum on the bottom of my shoe bowl,
some disgusting bowl probably.
UConn almost beat U of I.
That's actually interesting.
Indiana is minus 27 against UConn, who put up a fight against U of I.
That game was really closer than you think.
Kind of got out of hand at the end.
How the hell is that spread 27?
Indiana just lost by
40 at home.
And they're minus 27?
Who do they think is the quarterback?
Like, I just, I give me... Right now, yeah, they don't
know who's playing quarterback. I mean, it looks like Phoenix
Jr. is
questionable. So it's either Ramsey or
Phoenix. Ramsey, bro, yeah. Give me
UConn to cover. I don't even care if they're on the road. I don't, I don't care.
They could have Kemba Walker quarterback and I'd still pick UConn.
What do you think?
Yeah, I'm definitely taking you kind of cover. I think Indiana wins,
but I'm just not impressed by Indiana so far. I, you know,
I think last week you even said, I think Indiana is going to make this close.
I said, I think Ohio state's going to blow them out.
I think we know who the real believer is in Ohio state and who the real
daughter is in Indiana. But yeah, I'm on the train. I think UConn is going to blow them out. I think we know who the real believer is in Ohio State and who the real dadder is in Indiana.
But, yeah, I'm on the train.
I think UConn's going to at least cover that game.
And then the final game of the weekend that no one gives a single hoot about
is Rutgers versus Boston College.
The line is not even showing up.
Is there a line?
Yeah, Rutgers is getting plus 7.5 at home.
And you know what I'm going to say?
Boston College is going to come in there.
They're going to go on the field.
They're going to embarrass Rutgers.
Rutgers can't really score.
They have a terrible offense.
The thing about Boston College in this game is people are going to go out there
and they're going to say, you know, Rutgers put up a lot of points.
They lost to Iowa, but Iowa has a good defense. And they're going to say Boston Collegegers put up a lot of points they lost to iowa but i was a good
defense and they're gonna say boston college just got lost by 24 to kansas kansas stinks they haven't
i don't think they like that was their first road game or power five road game they won in or
whatever in like 48 games or something it was absurd um it's just boston college got embarrassed
first of all and it it was on Friday night.
It was one of the few games.
They're going to go into Piscataway.
Rutgers is going to get ran.
They're not going to score any points.
I think – can you beat Boston College minus 7.5?
I think they won by at least 14.
Boston College is a really good team.
They have a really good running back in A.J. Dillon,
which Iowa saw two years ago in the pinstripe bowl.
They're a very capable team.
They slipped up.
They lost to a bad team.
That's not good.
It's a terrible look, but guess what?
You don't want to play a team who is mad.
They just lost to a terrible Kansas team.
I think they're going to go into Piscataway.
I think they're going to dominate Rutgers.
I know our defense is good, but even what I saw against Iowa,
it looked like a junior league team, looked like a JV team.
I just think they look awful, dude. I think seven and a half is not enough for them.
All right, man. Hot take. I'm taking Rutgers, bud. Oh boy. I think I just, I just had that feeling, man. I don't think Rutgers look good against Iowa, but I think Iowa played a pretty
good game. I think A.J. Pinesa was really working them pretty hard. And once he started hitting
their quarterbacks, you know, McClain Carter started getting a little skittish in the pocket um arthur sikowski you know saw the
wrath of epinezzo as well who names your kid arthur arthur arthur yeah i mean i thought i
was hearing the name wrong the whole time he kept saying arthur i'm like andrew it's arthur and i
looked and i'm like arthur oh that's why he has negative two yards and he's one for 20 because
his name's freaking arthur and he's thrown like 19 interceptions in his career, like four touchdowns.
Carter Sikowski, the worst quarterback name of all time.
Yeah.
Yeah, I mean, that is definitely – McClane Carter sounds way better.
It sounds like a Texas gunslinger, and he is from Texas.
But I'm taking Rutgers in this one.
I think Rutgers is going to win the game.
I don't think Boston College is good.
They are projected to finish at the bottom of the ACC,
and the ACC is one of the worst conferences in the nation.
Obviously, Rutgers is projected to finish at the bottom of the Big Ten,
but I think Rutgers is a much different team this year.
Even though Iowa smoked them, they did have two weeks to prepare for this game.
I'm taking Rutgers to win this game outright, man.
Yeah, well, this is going to be another Maryland Temple game.
So, I agree to disagree sir andrew
i love man well we'll have to have someone uh like so we've been talking about this for a while
we'll have someone go through and see what our scores are i think after last week i'm actually
pretty close to you and after this week i'll be beating you um so that'll be fun hot take there
um we do have some fantastic stuff coming up next week obviously with the middle tennessee state
game middle tennessee state not exactly a team to worry about,
but a game that we do need to be careful with.
And we're going to be covering all that on next week's episodes
of the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
We'll also be giving you a full rundown of this week's games
and kind of our thoughts, and especially the AP poll.
I do expect a few top-ranked teams to lose.
I think Iowa might even rise up a spot just because of some of the teams
maybe dropping out of that top 17, 18-ish area.
We do appreciate everyone tuning in to the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
Just a quick reminder, Zach,
do you want to give a plug again on that Jordan Kanzari memorabilia giveaway?
Yeah, so guys, if not already out, it's a long day.
Take the train.
It's going to be a long morning if I get the energy to do it.
If not, I'm going to grab my coffee. I'll make the post before noon. Check it out. It's a long day. Take the train. It's going to be a long morning if I get the energy to do it. If not, I'm going to grab my coffee. I'll make the post before noon. Check it out. It'll

Have a fantastic weekend.
Not having to worry about Iowa football
and watching some of the great games,
Michigan, Wisconsin, Texas A&M.
You got Indiana.
Geez, no.
And Notre Dame and Georgia.
And if you feel like you really need football,
I guess watch the Rutgers game.
But have a great day and a great weekend, Hawkeye Nation.
We appreciate all the support of the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
And go Hawks.
Go Hawks.
Side note, if Boston College wins and beats Rutgers,
add Andrew Wade on Twitter.
Everyone talk crap to him, okay?
Thank you. Have a good weekend. you
