Locked On Lakers - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Lakers - Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura and Deandre Ayton Lead Lakers to First Preseason Win

Episode Date: October 12, 2025

The Lakers got some good news on the floor Sunday, winning their first game of the exhibition season, 126-116 over Golden State at the Crypt. Strong games from Austin Reaves (who was banged up in the ...second half, but after the game was described as "fine" by JJ Redick), Rui Hachimura and Deandre Ayton -- three guys who will need to bring it without LeBron James in the lineup for the first 10 games at least. There were good performances from Dalton Knecht, Gabe Vincent, Jarred Vanderbilt and more. Overall, a strong effort for LA, who were playing without Luka Doncic, LeBron and Marcus Smart. So about Luka -- the Lakers did provide a little clarity on a very mysterious week. Luka is fine. He participated in full when the Lakers practiced Saturday, went through warmups on Sunday and will play in two of the final three games the Lakers play before the regular season starts on the 21st. Last week's mini-shut down was planned load management stuff... the type of thing maybe the Lakers should have explained?  HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Lakers win! Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, everyone, welcome to Lockdown Lakers for Monday. Brian Kamenetsky, Andy Kaminetsky. The Lakers get their first preseason win, but Luka Dantr is still yet to play. We'll explain the plan for him next. You are Locked on Lakers. Your daily Los Angeles Lakers podcast, part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. Thanks to everybody for making Locked on Lakers.
Starting point is 00:00:33 First listen to every day Monday through Friday, to matter how where you get your podcast. This one's always free, never behind paywall. And Locked on Lakers on YouTube is where over 36,000 subscribers to the channel are all hanging out with each other, leaving us questions, leaving each other, comments for each other, and all celebrating, Andy, the first preseason win of the 25-26 season, a 126 win over the Golden State Warriors at the crypt. Plenty of good stuff in this one, starting with Austin Reeves. and then moving on to Rui Hachimura and DeAndre Aiton and Jake Borevia,
Starting point is 00:01:11 and I thought Dalton Connect did some nice things. So overall, a very strong game for the Lakers. But want to start with who wasn't on the floor, namely Luca Donch, which will break down all of that momentarily after we let you know that today's episode is brought to you by Fandul. Right now, new customers can bet just $5. And if your bet wins, you'll get $300 of bonus bets to use across the app. fandual.com to get started. So we learned a lot actually over the weekend, Andy, about sort of
Starting point is 00:01:41 what's going on with Luca. We know LeBron is going to miss the first couple weeks of the season at the very least, and they've been waiting to get some clarity on Luca. Luca practiced in full on Saturday, did not play on Sunday, but will play two of the final three preseason games that the Lakers still have before next week's over. This is being described as, as an over, an overabundance of caution might be me editorializing. It is being described as an abundance of caution. A regular, a regular abundance of caution. Right.
Starting point is 00:02:16 Just, well, in the Lakers' mind and in Luca Donchich's mind, it would be appropriate garden variety abundance of caution. The idea being that Luca played pretty intense basketball with Eurobasket over the summer, making sure that he does not over-exert himself in the preseason. I think especially with the added context of LeBron is almost certainly going to miss the first nine to 15 games at a minimum, maybe even more. So you want to make sure that you don't end up potentially ending up with Luke on the shelf because of a pre-season injury brought on by anything that could feel like over-exertion. I understand the logic, as I've made clear throughout this preseason, I have concerns that the Lakers are not getting as much out of this as they can or should in the preseason because of the, I guess,
Starting point is 00:03:19 since I made my opinion clear, overabundance of precautionary methodology, but it is what it is. I understand it. I may not love it all, but I get it. It's one of the, look, I mean, Marcus Smart didn't play that is, you know, again, you want guys on the floor, but you have a guy recovering from tendonitis and his skillies tendon. And he's been practicing and you want to make sure that you're treating this carefully because you, you know, especially with a guy like Smart who's been banged up for a couple of years now. You know, you need him to be as whole as possible. So we'll talk about. And that's a drug really quick.
Starting point is 00:04:02 That's also, though, addressing something specific and tangible. Sure, no question. But to get to the Lucas stuff, it's very clear. I'll say this, the clarity of, because we talked about going to the weekend, if Luke, there was no clarity in what was happening with him. We weren't sure, like, is he kind of injured? Nobody's talking about it?
Starting point is 00:04:28 Is, are they doing what essentially amounts to a planned load management throughout preseason, which again, you can debate the merits of it, but is not as worrisome. Like you don't worry about Luca's health. You worry about the strategy, maybe, but you don't worry about his health. We at least got clarity on Saturday when it was, you know, Luca practiced in full. And he did his pregame warmups on Sunday. And then they decided, you know, he's going to play in two of the final four, not these
Starting point is 00:04:58 two. The Lakers play again on Tuesday. Then I think they go back. I think it's Tuesday, Wednesday, and then like Saturday or something like that. And I suspect he will not play in the both ends of the back-to-back. It's Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday. Right. Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday.
Starting point is 00:05:12 I knew it was something like that. So it's, this is one of those deals where I 100% am willing to, you know, put money on. Team Luca had kind of had their preference on how they wanted to do it. coming off Eurobasket. The Lakers, JJ Redick, you could tell last week, wanted everybody, wanted everybody on the floor. Like, he's the coach. He wants everybody on the floor.
Starting point is 00:05:44 If this is what Luca wants to do and feels that is best for him, then you kind of do it, right? Like, you don't argue with the guy over it. I mean, I would love if everybody was on for every practice and whatever. But I don't know what the alternative is. I'm not making, look, I'm not making the case that JJ and Rob and the rest of the coaching staff,
Starting point is 00:06:13 the training staff, and Jeannie Bus should have all gotten together and shoved Luca onto the court to play this game. I'm just saying when you think about trying to maximize preseason, which was one of the massive talking points heading into this season that quite frankly, the Lakers were proactive about. Oh, for sure. Not necessarily us. And if this is some, I will say this.
Starting point is 00:06:39 If this was something that they had suspected might be the case heading into preseason, knowing that Luca clearly worked hard this offseason, just getting himself into shape, then doing the Eurobasket. If nothing else, I think they would have been better off messaging, hey, we are probably going to do some easing of Luca into this right off the bat, as opposed to messaging this idea that we are going to maximize preseason and we are going to value the hell out of it. Damn it, because this is what we didn't get last year building the plane in midair,
Starting point is 00:07:20 which by the way, I didn't even think was an excuse by Raup Polinka. It was, you know, the flowery, colorful analogies that we've come to love from Rob, but I think there was genuine legitimacy and merit to it. What they tried to do midseason after that trade, and then especially after the Mark Williams deal was rescinded, doing all that in real time with certain guys, Luca, LeBron, I think Rui maybe, like, in and out of the lineup, like, that's not easy to do. So I don't even, I don't even consider it excuse making, but they set up a very big expectation and I think theme heading into this year.
Starting point is 00:08:01 And if they weren't going to act on it, or at least they thought there could be a possibility of not acting on it, they should have just said, we're going to ease Luca into this because we're thinking about the big picture. And then at least you don't set up something that you don't deliver on.
Starting point is 00:08:18 I don't think this is the first time they've fallen into this trap. Because what was, what was or or they could have if not explained it on media day or the Thursday before when or Friday Thursday or Friday when Rob and and JJ spoke to the media ahead of media day. Maybe it's you don't explain it. But like that second week where Luca went from practicing in full, skipping the first two games, I understood.
Starting point is 00:08:49 Like it's like they've got six. Right. Which, you know, and it's it's more than everybody else plays. go look at box scores around. I know everybody is like the Lakers need this edge. Look at preseason box scores. No team plays their stars or even most of their starters in every preseason they do not.
Starting point is 00:09:11 The Warriors didn't tonight. They didn't play Steph. They didn't play Jimmy Butler. It's not unusual. Right. And we all kind of want the Lakers to have the proverbial eye of the tiger in all things. but like sit the first two kids.
Starting point is 00:09:26 But what was confusing to people was that he went from practicing in full to barely, really not playing in the second week with no explanation. Well, and especially too, it's confusing because quite frankly, the Lakers are not transparent about health situations. They are not. So that's what allows a lot of speculation and imaginations to run wild because, you know, I'm old enough to remember when Kendrick Nunn was week to week for a year. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:59 Season doesn't start until Trevor Reza gets back. Yeah. I'm not just saying. Right. These are the things that lead you to be concerned. Right. People could have and would have made the same criticisms that they're making now. But the Lakers do have a tendency to over promise and under deliver in certain things.
Starting point is 00:10:19 When it comes to we're going to be super active. summer. We're going to be super active at the trade deadline. We're doing all these things like, you know, excitement and change are right around the corner. Like, you know, and they talk big games in that way. And this was one of those times when a little bit of clarity might have helped. But, Andy, the flip side is, apparently the good news is there's nothing wrong with Luca. And he's, I'm sure, I would be very surprised if he doesn't play Tuesday. And if he doesn't play Tuesday, and if he doesn't play Tuesday, certainly will play Wednesday because he's playing in two of the final three games of the preseason. We will see that.
Starting point is 00:10:59 We'll see assuming that Austin Reeves came through Sunday's game without too big of an injury, which we'll explain here in the moment. Everybody seemed to think it was fine, but we'll cover that in a moment and we'll learn more, I'm sure, Monday and Tuesday, you know, as he gets a night's sleep and all that. But assuming everybody's sort of good to go, they'll get a couple dress rehearsals in with the team going forward. Let's break down next, though, Andy, what we saw in Sunday's game because there was a lot to like.
Starting point is 00:11:31 We'll do it next. Starting point is 00:12:26 today at OnePeloton.com. Okay, so 126, 116, Andy was the final score at the CryptCrypto.com arena. The Lakers get the win, the first preseason win in three tries. And there was a great deal to like in this game, particularly on an individual performance basis. First of all, Austin Reeves,
Starting point is 00:12:54 in his second game of the preseason, played great. 23 minutes had 21 points, three rebounds, three assists. A steel and a block was 7 of 10 from the floor, two of four from three point range. Very early aggressive play from Rui Hachamura, six of 10 from the floor, three of four from three point range, 16 points.
Starting point is 00:13:17 Obviously, his production at his more natural power forward with LeBron out is going to be critical for the Lakers if they're going to get through this stretch without LeBron and still keep up a pretty robust record, which is the hope. DeAndre Aiton, this was his best game, 26 minutes, six of eight from the floor, Andy, really displaying that capacity to hit in the mid range from the elbow, little floaters in the paint. Also had five assists, as the Lakers used him a lot as kind of a pivot guy, two steals and a block. I don't think I have to explain to people how important Aidan becomes as an offensive. weapon without
Starting point is 00:14:00 LeBron available. So those three guys played really well. There are other guys to talk about. Jake LaRavia had some nice moments. Dalton Connect had some nice moments. Gabe Vincent had some nice moments. But those three guys, to me, were the ones who really stuck out. Stuck out. Yeah, Aiton, it's funny watching him with the five assists.
Starting point is 00:14:23 His lead-up and actual playmaking is often not the prettiest thing you'll see in the world. Like, there, his, his passes, he'll catchy in. Well, his passes almost feel like they're being set up in slow motion, almost in a way that feels like you're about to watch a car accident take place. Like, there's just a lot of stuff happening. But I will say in this particular game, his instincts as a playmaker, I thought were really, really good.
Starting point is 00:14:59 And his defensive, not just instincts and effectiveness, but just the intensity and the awareness on that side of the ball. A lot of really very handsy. It was very active. Yeah, it was very evident. A lot of balls. Yeah, it was very evident. And something that he's talked about a lot in the postgame interview with Mike Trudell
Starting point is 00:15:21 from Spectrum Sportsnet. He said he's trying to send a message to. both his teammates and the rest of the league that he is the backbone and backline of this defense. And it's something that, you know, again, we've talked about many times with DeAndre Aiton given his track record. He's had very few opportunities to walk the walk for the time being he mostly can just talk it. But he is consistently saying the right things about that stuff. And I think thus far in the preseason has actually been pretty on top of it. I, I'd like that.
Starting point is 00:15:56 I think so. And I'll say this too. Like, you know, the, there was a moment in the third quarter where he looked a little gassed. But the, aside from that, like, I think the, if you're looking for silver linings in LeBron's absence, and I think we all are, the fact that Aiton is going to have a much more defined
Starting point is 00:16:19 and higher profile role offensively for the first fifth, of the season, we'll say. I think we'll actually help him defensively. It is easier for a lot of players. And we can all sit here and say, it shouldn't be this way or whatever. But for a lot of players, you are more engaged defensively
Starting point is 00:16:40 when you are more involved offensively. That's just how it goes for a lot of guys. One of the all-time Laker Greats at Center once said that if you want the big dog to guard the porch, you've got to feed him. And while I think many felt that Shaq should have been just interested in guarding the porch because he valued the house. It was very clear.
Starting point is 00:17:00 He's being paid a lot to guard the porch. Yeah, he's getting paid a lot to be a watchdog, but nonetheless, he wanted to be not just fed, but like the really good dog food. Right. And so, you know, for a guy like Aden, I think there you, it's not even like a question of effort or, you know, in Shaq's case, sort of prima don'tiness or whatever. Like, you're just more in the rhythm of things. Like you're in the flow and it, you know, it's, you're, so that will be beneficial to him.
Starting point is 00:17:30 It will, I think, tire him out a little bit more because there was, like I said, you could see there was a moment about seven minutes left in the third quarter when it was like, oh, D'Andre's just went down a gear. So that's something the Lakers will have to look for. But overall, and I, you know, I keep looking at it, 26 minutes, eight rebounds. and you're going a couple follows and stuff like that. He was present on the offensive glass. And I think the number that matters most to me for Aiton, offensively at least, or sort of in terms of box score numbers, I should say, is that rebounding number because they need 10 a night out of him.
Starting point is 00:18:16 He's been a 10 rebound, a night guy for his career. That's what the Lakers need from him this season. season. And that is that is absolutely what he's been producing on a permanent basis, exceeding that really in the preseason. Well, they are, I mean, the rebounds from eight from eight in this season were going to be important regardless. But during this period without LeBron, it becomes extremely important because somebody has to make up for, you know, that skill from LeBron. and LeBron is one of the all-time great rebounders for his position, and he's one of the best rebounders on this team, and it's something he has been rock-solid, consistent, and productive his entire career.
Starting point is 00:19:01 Other guys need to make up for it. Obviously, there's an onus on Rui, for an example, who scored really well in this game, but rebounding has never been a strength form. They're going to need more from him. They're going to need, if nothing else, guys like Jake Laravia or even games. Dave Vincent to be active in putting a body boxing out so somebody else can get the rebounds, like in ways that it may not show up on the box score, but if you're watching the game, you know that they're doing.
Starting point is 00:19:29 And for what it's worth, I saw Rui and La Ravia and a lot of other guys actually doing that. I think they're, I think so. But Smokey and the YouTube comments left the comment. I watched Zach Randolph, who couldn't jump over a subway sandwich, average 10 rebounds a game. and Ruey, an athlete can't get me five or six on the regular. And I, yeah, I agree. Like, he's big enough, strong enough, fast enough, athletic enough, all of that stuff. But rebounding is anticipation.
Starting point is 00:19:59 It's reading a play. It is effort. There is a certain effort to it is very much an attention to detail thing, an awareness thing, a consistency thing. So if you're like Zach Randolph and constantly putting your body where it needs to be to make sure the other, you don't have to jump. You know, the best rebarkers, in a lot of ways, don't. The ball just falls to them because they've done all the other work. And that's really where Rui doesn't necessarily excel.
Starting point is 00:20:27 We didn't really get into Austin who looks, you know, we'll see, you know, again, no LeBron. Reeves becomes a significantly more important piece, especially offensively. he is having a great preseason thus far. He's played in two of the three games has looked outstanding in both making shots, moving the ball around. He looks like a guy who might have heard a few people say shouldn't be getting paid this offseason coming up.
Starting point is 00:21:00 Well, his agent sure did. I mean, we heard from Aaron Riley, his agent over the summer, you know, mocking the idea that Austin should get traded for some backup center, which I don't recall anybody ever suggesting. But the point being, team Reeves, they're hearing this stuff. And whether Austin wants to prove it because he wants to be,
Starting point is 00:21:25 as he's actually said, a Laker for life, or he wants to prove this because he wants to get paid by somebody else, or you needn't even have to choose. You just play really well and let the chips fall where they may. He is off to a really good start, and it mirrors a lot of what has been said about Austin, in the summer heading into training camp. So we'll talk a little bit more about Austin,
Starting point is 00:21:48 highlight a few other really good performances around the roster, and we'll do all of that next. Locked on Lakers is brought to you by Fandul, the NFL season. And that's because I've got monarch money. Whether it's 401Ks, properties, investments, when you don't have a full picture, you end up leaving money on the table. It is incredibly important to have visibility into your finances. You cannot track, you cannot fix, you cannot alter what you cannot see. And so the best thing about monarch money in my estimation is this dashboard. It puts everything
Starting point is 00:23:29 in front of you. It tracks your spending. You get a paycheck. It pops up in your Monarch money account. You see all this stuff happening in front of you. And then you can get control of your finances. Again, if you can't see it, you can't fix it. Monarch money allows you to get a handle on it. Visibility, I cannot emphasize this enough, is a major, major part of wealth building. Monarch Money does the heavy lifting for you when you link all of your accounts together. And you just get all these great visuals, great categorization. It's super simple.
Starting point is 00:24:01 So don't let financial opportunity slip through the cracks. Use code locked on NBA at Monarchmoney.com in your browser for half off your first year. That's 50% off your first year at monarchmoney.com with the code locked on NBA. This was, the box score, people are going to look at and be like, no, because three of nine from the field, 0,4 from three point range, six points in 25 minutes for Vando, four rebounds to assess. And they're going to look at it and be like, I'm looking at that. I see inefficiency and four missed three-pointers.
Starting point is 00:24:44 what they miss a nice play at the basket where he followed his own miss got inside a couple decent passes one of which Jake Laravia showed phenomenal hands basically picking up a ball that Vanderbilt bulleted basically at his foot then Laravia picked it up but Vando had a couple plays where he finished inside which is I know everybody is interested in his three point shooting Andy but you have been preaching this for a couple years, it is infinitely more important that Vando be able to finish and transition at the rim, finish on cuts, all that kind of stuff,
Starting point is 00:25:26 than it is for him to become a knockdown three-point shooter. Once the season starts, that is not going to be part of really his game or the Lakers offense, but the interior finishing will. And he's been much better at that in the preseason. He's been much better. He looks really active. I mean, you expect the activity from Vando because that's a very large part of what keeps him in the league.
Starting point is 00:25:49 But he looks just more comfortable out there. He looks healthier. Like he looks less labored than he has the last couple seasons when he's tried to maintain this level of activity. Like the way he's looked in this preseason really makes it feel like the last couple of seasons where Vando was only effective in sporadic pockets throughout. the season and sometimes just like maybe five, six minutes of a game and it didn't always feel sustainable. It really makes you feel like this was a health thing and the ability to enter a season healthy having spent all summer working on his game as opposed to rehabbing surprise double foot surgery. Like this is making a big difference for Vando this season. His
Starting point is 00:26:41 disruption was out there in this game. There were a few sequences where he got things started from the Lakers just through pure pestering of a Golden State ball handler. It's funny when you mentioned the three-point shot. I would like to see Vando start attacking more from those open for a reason corner threes. I like that he's willing to take them. and has the confidence to take them. Fine.
Starting point is 00:27:12 Great. And he should take them every now and then. I'd much rather see him just put the ball on the floor. Yeah. In the preseason, I'm kind of of of the mind of take as many of those as you have open ones. Just, you know, see if you can start getting a rhythm. If a few of them go in, if nothing else for a week or two in the regular season, you'll have people maybe even thinking of guarding them out there.
Starting point is 00:27:37 But broadly speaking, I agree with you. Because that plays to more of his actual, the offensive strengths that Vando has, you know, he's got a solid handle. He's got some good playmaking instincts. Like it actually plays to more of his strengths if he actually attacks an open lane as opposed to just taking that shot because he's being left open. I agree. And I think once the season starts, it'll be.
Starting point is 00:28:03 I do not believe Jared Vanderbilt is ever going to become a reliable three-point shooter. where like this is part of it. He's going to have two or three opportunities a game where he's left wide open on the perimeter and he should probably take those shots because it kind of screws up an offense when you don't. But generally speaking, you're left open like that for a reason.
Starting point is 00:28:23 And I just don't, I don't, 35% from Vando would be like spectacular. I just don't think we're getting, you know, I don't think we're going to get there. And so like I said, preseason, go for it. It's fine. Whatever. But I think once the regular season starts,
Starting point is 00:28:39 put the ball on the floor, attack the rim, make the simple pass to a guy. Vando, I think, does sometimes get into a little trouble because he was one of these guys, if I'm correct about this. It was like a guard when he was younger and then outgrew it, I think. Because he had when he went to, when he started to Kentucky, they kind of saw him as, again, I'm going on memory here as a guy who could distribute the ball. Everybody would like to bring the ball up the floor and all that kind of stuff.
Starting point is 00:29:02 He gets into trouble when he gets a little two point Gotti. But he can make the basic pass like you're saying. And if you cut to the basket when Vando cuts to the basket, he can hit you with that pass. You can run basic screen and rolls off and stuff with him. Or I'd like to see it. Yeah. I mean, I'd like to see him give up the ball. And, you know, in the first half season that they had Vando.
Starting point is 00:29:25 And, you know, this is an area where I think Darwin Ham actually has done better than JJ insofar as figuring out there will be no Darwin praise here. People don't like that. Well, you know, I mean, it's it's going to happen. every now and then. I thought Darwin and the team did a very good job using Vando as a cutter and really taking the fact that defenses were totally ignoring him and using it against him. And obviously that doesn't necessarily apply, you know, when he has the ball. Right. And it won't worry. It doesn't work in the playoffs. And like whatever. But we got a long, you got 82 games together. It's fine. But it is something I would like to see them do more with Vando.
Starting point is 00:30:09 take that initiative himself, but that he is looking really good in the preseason and him being a playable 20 minute a guy in the regular season. And I think if he does it all season in the regular season, it'll continue into the postseason. It's a big deal. And, you know, obviously, his minutes are set to be pretty, you know, get a boost with LeBron. Not available. We did mention Rui briefly, just running down the numbers, very strong performance offensively. aggressive with his shot, put the ball on the floor a couple times to get to the rim. Like they need him to be a real offensive presence. Dalton Connect, I thought, did some things in a, you know, he played 34 minutes,
Starting point is 00:30:54 so you would expect, you know, the 16 points that he put up. And, you know, a couple of those threes were late. But Dalton was in a position getting kind of a gift start because a couple people were still missing to be able to, like, show he, you know, is, is capable of playing minutes. Like, this was a big start for him in the preseason and to come out and show a little, a few things. And I thought for the most part, he played pretty well. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:28 No, he did. Absolutely. It was, it was good. It was good. I like a lot of what we saw from today. if nothing else, it really felt like the, it really felt like, sorry, I just got a text that came in that I need to address in a second. But it felt like the guys that had been practicing during the week, a lot good came from it. And it was very positive what ended up coming from it.
Starting point is 00:31:59 So, yeah. So the next week will be, the Lakers didn't exactly lay out every. in perfect order is, you know, that's not just how they roll. But we do know that Luke is going to play two of the final three preseason games. And so Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, it'll, I think they will try to line that up with the days that they are most comfortable playing smart to get him on the floor so that it can have this real dress rehearsal with everybody who is available. that obviously meaning basically hopefully everybody but LeBron and Claibah and Adieu Theero. So we'll see how that goes. We'll learn a little bit more on Monday.
Starting point is 00:32:44 Make sure that Austin Reeves is in fact fine. As JJ said, Reeves did not seem bothered by the injuries either after the game, but you never know what happens when you wake up. He'll probably take it easy on Monday.
