Locked On Lakers - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Lakers - How Buss Family Drama Could Impact Lakers Basketball, and Jeanie's Legacy

Episode Date: August 19, 2026

The Buss siblings clapped back at Jeanie Buss in their argument over whether the sibs have the ability to force a liquidation of the family shares, and as we wait for a resolution that might be a whil...e in coming, it's worth asking what comes next. For the sale of the Lakers, for Jeanie's role, for the current front office, the roster and more.  One thing that becomes clear: The longer this -- meaning the sale of the team from Mark Walter to Josh Kushner/Bob Iger -- goes without a resolution, the worse it is for the Lakers (it makes it harder to hire people, make transactions, etc.). But it's also not good for Jeanie, because ultimately, it's very hard to see how she comes out ahead, even if she wins in court.  One way or another, it feels like then end of an era, but the question now is how much damage that end brings.   HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky    SEGMENT 1: The Buss siblings clap back.    SEGMENT 2: How this impacts the basketball end of things for the Lakers.    SEGMENT 3: What does Jeanie think she's going to "win" even if she wins?   Photo Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports   Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!   Indeed Listeners of this show get a $75 Sponsored Job Credit to help give your job the premium placement it deserves at http://Indeed.com/podcast.   Cozy EarthHead to https://cozyearth.com and use my code LOCKEDON for an exclusive 20%. Starting point is 00:00:00 As the bus family drama heats up, we wonder what all of this, how it will impact the actual on-court product going forward for the Lakers. That's next. You are Locked-on Lakers. Your daily Los Angeles Lakers podcast, part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Thanks, everybody, for stopping by Lockedon Lakers, Brian Komeneski, Andy Komenetsky, whether you're getting the show live on YouTube, as we are broadcasting right now, or you are a subscriber to the audio feed, whether that's Spotify,
Starting point is 00:00:42 whether you get at Apple iTunes, however you get your podcast. We certainly appreciate and encourage you to subscribe in as many forms as you can, so you never miss anything. Andy, the day two, I guess we're in now, of the latest round of bus family drama, and in the end, this might be,
Starting point is 00:00:59 it will probably be the last round of bus family drama as it relates to the Lakers. But it's a doozy and we don't exactly know the impact yet how it will resolve. Obviously, what we do know is Jeannie Bus took a shot through her attorney at her siblings. And the siblings took a shot back on Tuesday. Yeah. And this obviously related to the five bus siblings not named Jeannie wanting to cash out their shares and officially separate from the organization.
Starting point is 00:01:36 Jeannie Buss not wanting to and saying that the others actually can't do it unless she agrees to it. Lawyers are now involved on both sides. There was a recent statement to Shamsha Rania on Tuesday from the other five bus siblings. The Los Angeles Lakers have never been just a basketball team. They have been one of the greatest privileges of our lives.
Starting point is 00:02:00 Our focus has always been what we, we believe is best for the Lakers, the fans, who have supported this franchise for generations and the greater Los Angeles community, Johnny, Jimmy, Janie, Joey, and Jesse have made the decision to sell the family's remaining stake, and we remain united in that decision. We intend to move forward thoughtfully, respectfully, and through the appropriate process. So, this time is not that time for a variety of reasons it is worth noting that the general consensus is that when like for for example Jim and Johnny tried this sort of palace coup kind of thing back in 2017 2016 2017 it was
Starting point is 00:02:47 it was very much seen as an example of they got bad they had very little sort of grounds to stand on from a legal standpoint Jeannie's case was significant significantly stronger than what the brothers put up. There's a lot of commentary out there about how generally speaking, at least the older siblings have always been much more interested in what they would like to trust to say rather than what it actually says. But what I think is interesting, and Andy and we talked about this for Tuesday's show,
Starting point is 00:03:25 it's not just what's in the legal document that matters here. It's not just who wins this particular battle over whether, you know, the, I think it's, is it Joey, Jeannie and Jeannie? The three voting people in this particular thing, like where they're obligated to essentially vote for Jeannie to remain the controlling stakeholder for life. It kind of seems like. Gene's argument seems to be that unless I agree to essentially liquidate the bus monetary interest in this organization, the other five are trapped. Based on this idea from this 2017 court order, and we'll see how all of that gets interpreted. And she may be legally correct again. But what I think is just fascinating about this whole thing and particularly relevant for the Lakers,
Starting point is 00:04:28 and how they go forward, twofold. First, this is about much more than the law. There's going to be, you know, the difference in where LA, where that takes sides and whose side they're on when, now versus, you know, almost a decade ago, it's going to be significantly different. The impact on the team going forward is going to be very different. And, you know, like,
Starting point is 00:04:58 Most fans at this point are just looking at like, okay, what is this going to do to my basketball team? Because none of y'all are going to be running the team anyway. And we're much more interested in the people that will be. I mean, I've seen a few comments in the chat that, you know, this is overblown. None of this affects the actual basketball. It doesn't really matter. You guys are looking for something to talk about in August. Trust me when I say trust.
Starting point is 00:05:28 It's true. We were actually given something, Andy. Right. Trust Brian and I when we say, seriously, this is a big deal. Like, the transfer of this franchise from Mark Walter as majority owner to Kushner and Iger as majority owners would be complicated under the best of circumstances simply because these are complicated, huge, money issues and transfers and investments. And this is something that would be complicated anyway. This new wrinkle attached to it where essentially the almost 20% of ownership stake in the franchise is in flux. And in part because the main person keeping it in flux,
Starting point is 00:06:28 seemingly wants to maintain a governorship role that it's pretty clear the new guys coming in are indifferent at best towards her keeping. You better believe this makes this more complicated. It also, depending on how this drags out, it could interfere with the organization being able to make moves between now and whenever this is settled or make them as easily. It creates more cloudiness, less clarity at a time when you want to be able to maneuver all things being equal with as many people moving in the same direction working together as possible. This makes it way harder. I think I want to definitely get into some of what, you know, where the Lakers might be hamstrung.
Starting point is 00:07:26 going forward until the sale is completed. I agree with, I would agree with people in the comment section, for example, if their, if their perspective was it may not turn out to be a big deal. We don't know for sure that this is going to be a problem. That I agree with. That, like, the sale of the Lakers from Walter to Kushner Eiger was going to take a few months anyway. Like this was not going to happen, you know, by September 1st or something like that. There's a lot of work that needs to be done. Jared Kushner, I'm sorry, Josh Kushner needs to raise the rest of, you know, they're going to need to find additional investors, particularly if they end up buying out
Starting point is 00:08:19 Jeannie and the rest of the siblings if they buy out the bus family. but Kushner also needs to liquidate his shares of the Miami Heat before you can do. Like that's going to take a minute to do. I don't think you'll have trouble finding people who are willing to invest in the heat. And so he can do that, but it takes a minute. I think the vetting process for Kushner, Eiger, etc., is going to be a lot. little bit more rigorous just because of what we're seeing unfold right now. I highly recommend that Silver and the other owners ask, are you under federal investigation
Starting point is 00:09:06 right now? Blink once if no, blink twice if yes. We talked about this. And like I was actually just asked about this by Al Bronson in the chat. Like the vetting process with this investigation, the time. line of it was Mark Walter officially found out he was under investigation in September of 2025. The sale was approved by the other owners around the league in October of 2025. The news of this did not break until July of 26.
Starting point is 00:09:43 I actually, I think it is, if nothing else, a live possibility that the other owners did not know. I've seen criticisms of Jeannie like, oh, how did she like, you know, basically saying that, you know, she sold to, you know, somebody, you know, without like due diligence. Like there's no, I don't, to the, I agree with you. I do not think most people were aware of it. Or if they were, the amount of investigations or this or SEC things that happen fairly commonly with, with, you know, owners who do what these guys. do for living with this amount of wealth and this large of a business empire it is not unusual to be necessarily investigated for something civil whatever might be the the depths of this though we'll talk about this next the depths of what it seems like every time you turn over another rock with
Starting point is 00:10:39 mart walter whether it's criminal fraud sloppiness misleading did it rob all of the above all whatever Any combination of it, it seems to get a little bit worse every time you look somewhere else. And so because of that, I think there's going to be a little bit of a deeper and slower, careful vetting of this next ownership group. And we'll talk about the impact of all of this next. Locked on Lakers is brought to you by Fanduel, baseball fans. If you think you know who's hitting Homer today, Fandul is giving you a free chance to call your shot with Daily Dinger. it's easy to play. Just make your free pick for who you think will hit a home run in their game.
Starting point is 00:11:31 And if you're right, you will receive a profit boost to use on your next bet for a chance of extra winnings. Daily Dingers is a fun way to stay engaged with every day's games, whether you're following your favorite team, keeping an eye on matchups across the league. Every game has someone capable of going deep. And now you get the chance to make your prediction before the first pitch. There's certain players that where every app bat feels like the possibility of a home run. For example, if you're a Dodger fan, think of a guy whose name rhymes with O'Ha Shotani. And that's what makes Daily Dingers fun.
Starting point is 00:12:00 Every day brings fresh matchups, new storylines, and Daily Dingers gives you another reason to pay attention before the first pitch. So if you're ready to play your game today, join all the action at fandwell.com. That's fandle.com to play daily dingers and make your free pick on who's hitting a homer, play ball, swing for the fences on Fandul, an official partner of MLB. So, I mean, like I said, I am willing to accept that both, you know, Jeannie Bus, who I think you could say sold for under market value to try to sell to Mark Walter and all these other things. And that created some tension reportedly with the family. And all of that stuff. Set all that aside for a minute. I think it is revisionism as two people who are critical of the bus family, in my opinion. It is revisionism to just sort of assume that Jeannie was asleep at the switch here when she sold to Mark Walter.
Starting point is 00:13:01 I suspect she didn't know, if nothing else, the extent of this. I suspect, I'll tell you this, the reason that I suspect that the overwhelming majority, if not all of the owners, were unaware of this, is for no other reason than I doubt an investigation that began in September. would have gone this long without whispers of it coming out had 30 owners been aware of it. I mean, I honestly think and honestly, I don't think they would want to approve someone that is under that type of federal. I also the when were the when was the cell phone and laptop? September taken that was taken in September. I believe so. I wasn't sure the timeline for that.
Starting point is 00:13:51 But like there's there's just if these things take time. And even again, if I suspect that half of these guys in one time or another have had investigators or the SEC or a tax person or something, knock on their door and say, hey guys, can you explain X, Y, and Z? And so they even though if they did know it, if they didn't know the like if they tried to buy the team now, everybody like, yeah, we're going to have to wait a minute on that. But so I think I will give both the genie and the rest of the league owners some degree of latitude until I hear there's, you know, that they were really genuinely were asleep at the switch.
Starting point is 00:14:35 But like that all of this stuff is, you know, the sale of the team, an unexpected sale of the team at a time when the Lakers were, you know, we've talked from the beginning of the summer, but we're lucky that it happened at the end of the summer, not the beginning. Who knows what it would have done to their free agent spending. We've talked all the time about how important this offseason is and how important this season is going to be. And when you are selling a team, I'm not saying all business is going to stop,
Starting point is 00:15:12 but some business is going to slow down and certain things like filling out the front office. If you're a really good candidate for a front office job somewhere else, the Lakers are interviewing you and you have choices, are you going to go to the team where you're hired by Rob Polinka who could be let go by the next set of ownership? Because that happens all the time, even for GMs who are doing a good job. People just want their own people. Are you going to go work for that guy? Are you going to go work for a different GM with a more stable and understood ownership group. The longer,
Starting point is 00:15:55 Jeannie bust drama has nothing to do with that, except it can slow that process down and lengthen by weeks or potentially months, depending on how this plays out and what impact it has on the sale, it could slow all this down.
Starting point is 00:16:11 That's why it matters. And that's why we're not making a bigger deal out of this than it is. It's already not a great thing for the Lakers to be being sold right now. It's even worse if it can, gets delayed by figuring out who gets 18% of the team and a ceremonial governorship role. Right.
Starting point is 00:16:29 And this is something that I think could end up a real test for Bob Eiger and Josh Kushner, like insofar as resolving this conflict and having a tough but direct conversation with Jeannie. Because, I mean, I imagine they would prefer that at this point, all buses be out of the building. I think at this point it's safe to say whatever that they were perhaps willing to, for lack of a better way of putting it, humor with Jeannie's role. To make this a graceful process to not embarrass her on the way out the door. I guarantee, though, a big piece of this was how easy do you make it for us to honor this agreement you have with Mark Walter that, to be totally honest, a role we don't really need you to do.
Starting point is 00:17:23 Well, if it ain't easy for us, then really what's the point now? But then also, like, I think this could be a test for Adam Silver, like his willingness to twist arms and make things, you know, uncomfortable for everyone, including himself, because Adam Silver, confrontation is not his wheelhouse. Like having these type of, I think, uncomfortable confrontational conversations with owners or people that he likes. And by all accounts, he and Jeannie have had a terrific relationship going back a while. Jeannie is a very likable person.
Starting point is 00:18:01 It's easy to understand. Genie Bus and the Lakers have been a phenomenal partner for the league. But if Adam Silver has to choose between siding with the incoming majority owners of the Tiffany franchise of the league, one of which Bob Iger is a personal friend of his who he's done He's friends with two. Right. He's got to choose between the impending majority owners who, by the way, are buying the team because the current majority owner is under federal investigation, apparently has to liquidate
Starting point is 00:18:37 everything he owns in order to get out of this. Or the one member of a minority owner contingency. where the other five want to get out, I can, again, promise you I know which side he would prefer. And this is one of those things where if David, you know, David Stern had his faults as a commissioner, but one of them did not include a willingness to be confrontational. And I can promise that if he were in charge of this, he would say something to the effect of, look, we will always value what you and your father and your family have been. meant to this organization. The Lakers have been as instrumental as any entity in league history
Starting point is 00:19:23 in terms of turning the NBA into what it is now. It has been critical and crucial, and we appreciate everything. And you will always be a family that this league will honor and appreciate. And we'd love to help you find an off-ramp that allows you a sense of dignity and pride. How would you like to be our number one fan? Something along those lines. But if you're not- Shelly Sterling. Shelly Sterling, right. But if you're not willing to do the right thing, and if you're willing to jeopardize the value of this league's crowning jewel
Starting point is 00:19:56 and the well-being of the league in the process, we will make this unpleasant. Like, I guarantee David Stern would say something effective. I will turn this whole league against you. Like, we will make you an outcast. And your legacy, your family's legacy, is going to be tarnished. And there's no reason it has to be there. this way, but if you force us into it, we will.
Starting point is 00:20:21 It's why I think it's funny. We'll talk more about this after the break, but like, I think that, you know, Jeannie, like I said, from a business standpoint, fantastic with the team. They didn't, they haven't exploited things in the way that maybe the Dodgers have that sort of ruthless efficiency and all that kind of. of stuff that you've seen the Dodgers monetize everything in the Lakers starting to do that and operate in that way. But broadly speaking, she's been really good for the business. She is an excellent partner for the league. The reason the Lakers have that, you know,
Starting point is 00:21:03 mid-season tournament banner hanging up is because the Lakers understood the assignment here. And like in terms of, they've always done that. They do not complain about revenue sharing. They don't do that. The Lakers are a great. partner for the league and that's genie that's you know jeanie carrying on like so like all of that stuff she's very good at where she struggles is with ultimate shot collar you know particularly on the basketball side she's not she is not confrontational she is um you know very comfortable unless it comes to firing a sibling right that's basically yeah like she yeah but you know she all of this stuff we've talked about at length um i think overall like you know you look
Starting point is 00:21:46 somebody and you say like she's been good for the franchise but at some point like and so i mean i feel like the the motivating factor here i don't i think first and foremost whether i don't know if she'd frame it this way she probably wouldn't isn't i want to keep my governorship you know it's this this this that it's whatever i think it's i don't want to lose to these like these guys I don't want to I want to stay involved with the team my identity as a as a person and as a business woman is is tied to this team this is you know I I didn't I you know she got married late you know later in life and she's the only bus member of the the trust who isn't governed by this you know you know the basically the clause that as member you know people pass away their shares are distributed to the rest of the family as opposed to being able to be passed down. It's a last man standing, I think, is how they refer to. It's kind of dark when you put it that way.
Starting point is 00:22:53 But that's sort of the terminology behind that kind of setup. Well, she's the only person that doesn't apply to. She doesn't have children. And I'm not questioning her choices in life. I just think that it's very possible that this is fundamentally part of her identity. And these people, these, people are not going to win. They are not going to be the ones that push me out of this thing.
Starting point is 00:23:20 If I have to step aside, it's because Bob Eiger tells me or Adam Silver tells me eventually, whatever, but not them. And I think there is right now an element of competitiveness, because like you say, these are the only people with whom she's very comfortable with confrontation. and I don't know if she's thought through, what do I do if, what happens if I win? What do I win if I win?
Starting point is 00:23:48 I want to get into that next because there have some thoughts on that as well. So talk about that. The problem of finding clothes that you can live it all day, be comfortable and do whatever you need to do, whether it's just chilling, going to meetings, playing golf,
Starting point is 00:24:08 being on the move. That problem has been solved by cozy earth. The everyday polo is the answer. It's lightweight, built to move with you, just easy to wherever. And if you see a post-purch survey, please mention you heard about it right here,
Starting point is 00:25:04 cozyEarth.com. So let me just finish this program now. And I know you wanted to make a point. Like, I, again, I'm not trying to question any of Genie's, you know, life choices or say she's like some bitter person. Like, no, I think she's a rich and full life, all this stuff. I think she's been, you know, dedicated to this franchise and her father's memory for decades now. And that's a hard thing to walk away from. People are extraordinarily complicated.
Starting point is 00:25:39 They can behave in one way in one situation and a different way in a different situation based on the who's around. the motivating factors and all kinds of stuff people are just people and this family dynamic is to say the least complex and that's I just maybe she knows something that I don't maybe she and Bob Iger have had a constructive conversation about what her role's going to be but I just don't I I I from the outside very outside looking in I just don't understand where she thinks this goes, particularly if there's a like a really long and ugly legal fight over these shares. This feels in a lot of ways to me like a heads, Jeannie loses, tails, Jeannie loses situation,
Starting point is 00:26:33 because she's either going to lose in court or give up and end up with her other five siblings having sold their shares, or she'll somehow keep this governorship, like things stay the same and she essentially has her siblings trapped so she can remain in this role with the organization, but she's not going to have any juice. Like I can promise that Kushner and Iger, given the way all owners in sports operate, and Bob Arger, you've talked about this a lot, Brian, has wanted to run, he's wanted to own a sports franchise for a long time. He's in his 70s. He doesn't have that long to do it. I doubt he is going to want to spend the opening handful of years letting Jeannie even pretend to be running things. Like he's going to want to put his stamp on this, frankly, while he can,
Starting point is 00:27:31 as will Josh Kushner. This is his last thing to show his competence and brilliance as a businessman. Right. So with that in mind, and I doubt. they would look to be hostile or dehumanizing towards Jeannie, but they'll likely look to create a setting where she's going to ultimately decide leaving is what's best or it's her only move. Like where what's the point? Like one way or another, she will either be forced out by her siblings or forced out by Eiger and Kushner
Starting point is 00:28:04 having drawn out this thing. And ultimately, I think either way, it just becomes a what's the point? point what's the end game? Something else though that I was thinking about though beyond the end game is just the idea of what she's even clinging to at this point. And do you remember that movie, it was an HBO movie in the mid-90s called The Late Shift about the battle between Letterman and Leno to take over the Tonight Show. And they were both trying to become the successor to Johnny Carson. Letterman had been hosting the late night show after Carson, Carson and on NBC. He had been told he was being groomed to eventually take it over, but then Jay Leno entered
Starting point is 00:28:46 the chat. NBC preferred him, but they hated his manager. So they're stringing Letterman along who had been offered a better deal from CBS, but he really wants the Tonight Show. He wants that show. It's been his dream since he was a kid, even though NBC has offered him a terrible deal and they are openly disrespecting him. And everybody around him is telling Letterman, just take the CBS deal. It's different. better. And Letterman has insisted he wants the Tonight Show. And one of his advisors tells him, don't you get it, David, they're not offering you the Johnny Carson show. That is gone forever. They're offering you damaged goods. They're offering you the Jay Leno show. And they're not even offering it now. They're making you wait for it. I'm the guy that moved heaven and earth
Starting point is 00:29:30 to get you this offer. And I'm telling you, it's not right. It's leftovers. It's shoddy. And that's like Jeannie and the Lakers now. These are not even the Lakers that she knows anymore. Dr. Bus has not been with us for more than decade. It's not her family involved in any significant way other than the shares. You're forcing them to keep in very large part because you fired them all. It's about to be two ownership groups removed from the one where you were at the top. You no longer serve the same purpose or occupy the same station. It's like what Letterman said about the Johnny Carson show.
Starting point is 00:30:07 Like that's gone. And it would even be like a damaged goods. governor role. Like Bob Iger, on the day that this news broke, Bob Iger didn't even try that hard to make it seem like you'd be, like Jeannie would be an asset. Like he expressed respect for Jeannie and for the Buss family legacy as he damn well should have, but he didn't even really describe Jeannie as somebody that he was looking forward to working with. So like it really gets to just that idea of, you're clinging to that camera. a lot. But at this point, it's like you're crashing in the castle and you're overstaying the
Starting point is 00:30:46 welcome. Like you're not, it's not the thing anymore. It's a little, and this is just, I'm kind of thinking out loud here. It's a little like the athletes that she's been kind of a steward of over the course. I mean, and nobody has been more dedicated to the sort of well-being, particularly of their stars than then genie and the Lakers and they're so good at that and you know she's often tried very hard to you know figure out ways to you know give people you know Kobe the the glory that he deserves and all these other things and make that ending and we give treat them as the way they should and all and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't but like most of the time in the time in sports, you just don't get the out you're looking for. And, you know, with this kind of thing,
Starting point is 00:31:46 it looked like, you know what, with Mark Walter taking over, he doesn't want to be out in front. Yeah, I mean, he's going to be making the ultimately making the decisions and this and that, but I'm still going to kind of get to do the thing. And like, it was, that's why she was so eager to sell to Walter potentially at below market value. In that situation, she got everything she wanted. She got everything she wanted. She got paid out. It was the best soft landing she could possibly hope for to where like this, the situation was untenable in the long run.
Starting point is 00:32:24 They were going to have to sell at some point. This was the perfect setup for her. And that's why she reportedly pushed the siblings to that sale. And I'm not crying for them either. they all walked away with half a million dollars after taxes when it was all said and done and kept another 200 million's worth one this is all said and done but i and i and what i really hope again because the longer this goes on the you know is it going to limit the types of transactions the lakers can go are they can be willing to make a big trade while ownership is in flux
Starting point is 00:33:09 I've already talked about, talked about the first segment, how hiring is going to be harder in the front office on the basketball side until this is settled. Because people will not want to take the job under Rob Polinka because of the uncertainty that's to follow. Rob Polinka, and we'll talk about this maybe over the course of the week, is like his behavior is going to change this year with the idea of like, I have to impress the new owners. If this season doesn't work out, I'm going to, you know, I'm probably out of here. I don't want that to happen. So does that impact the way he behaves? Does he do reckless things? Does he take Russell Westbrookian shots or something like that?
Starting point is 00:33:50 But really where I settled was it would be really sad, like genuinely, really sad to me. If this thing, which if it settles in two weeks, we all forget about, the team gets sold, and that's what we want to have happen. If this drags on or Jeannie insists on, you know, inserting herself in ways that seem to limit the franchise, not only is she going to tarnish, she's going to tarnish her reputation, you know, that's been decades in the making among Lakers fans
Starting point is 00:34:23 that ultimately I think will be where she'll be thought of well. But if she really does this, like if she inhibits the sale of the Lakers, she's now starting to get into messing up Mark Walters exit and like what could happen then? Like he needs a few billion dollars. Does that mean, you know, other stuff happens? Does he have to sell the Dodgers?
Starting point is 00:34:47 They're like, he's going to, he's, this has the potential to screw up Mark Walter stuff. And then she's going to have, you know, if that threatens his ownership of the Dodgers or it makes them unstable, she's going to have the whole city coming after. Like, it's just,
Starting point is 00:35:04 it's sad. And I can understand why she's disappointed. But sometimes you just have to let go and let, in her mind, the other guys win. Well, I was going to say she may be disappointed. And I do not doubt that there is an emotional element of this with Deney. Jeannie has, for better and for worse, always operated with sentimentality in terms of how she's run this organization. Again, sometimes for better, in my opinion, often for worse, but regardless, her sentimental attachment to the Lakers franchise and the Lakers
Starting point is 00:35:40 history cannot be questioned. But a big reason she's upset about this is she got out maneuvered. And she felt like she had maneuvered herself into this perfect spot where she had this role and the family was still attached, but she didn't have to deal with them anymore on a professional level. And now she got out maneuvered. And part of the reason she got out maneuvered is the ownership sale that she, by all accounts, wanted with Mark Walter, blew up in her face. Like, and that's part of what it's not her fault. It's not her fault. I'm not saying it's your fault. I agree. Right. I agree. Right. Every everybody in the moment, including these two hosts, thought this was a good thing. So I'm not, this is not saying
Starting point is 00:36:24 Jeannie should have known this was a problem. I'm just saying this was something that by all accounts, she really wanted. And it became very clear after the new. broke and once we started seeing the machinations, that one of the appeals was she would be able to have essentially the castle to herself. And then she got outmaneuvered. And that's part of this. And that's the part that ultimately she's going to have to let go if she always says what she cares first and foremost about is what's best for the franchise. Because a protracted battle, there's no so in a protracted battle so she can maintain minority ownership like along with five very unwilling siblings there's no argument that that's what's in the best interest of the lakers you can't make that
Starting point is 00:37:17 argument so like there's a guy spamming sort of half spam trolling the chat board right now keeps you know sort of like genie's going to be blamed for data centers and genies you know he's making the point of Jeannie's going to mess up the Dodgers. Come on. Jeannie's owning the Lakers might cause more data centers to be built or higher gas prices blame Jeannie. First of all, again, the premise of Mark Walter being made more unstable to the point where the Lakers sale doesn't go through,
Starting point is 00:37:48 he's going to have to find cash somewhere else, puts the Dodgers potentially more in play. I'm not making that up. But the point of this is, Jeannie's not going to own the Lakers. she could have a stake in them she could make money from them but when we talk about sports ownership in the context that we do it's you are a person who guides the team you are a person who makes choices makes decisions she would be fourth fifth sixth in the pecking order over who's doing what and
Starting point is 00:38:20 probably far lower than that on the basketball side she isn't going to own the team right in the in the way that we think about team ownership. That's the point. And so whether she wins this courtroom battle or not that determines whether in the now, this 17 point whatever percent is liquidated, she isn't going to own the team. And she got to sort of play act at owning the team under Mark Walter. And that arrangement is going to go away with the new guys. And it doesn't matter how this is resolved.
Starting point is 00:39:00 Right. This is, because I've seen a few comments in the chat, then we can go saying they're rooting for Jeannie because they don't want Eiger and Kushner to own the team. You need to understand this. This is not a choice between Jeannie versus Eiger and Kushner. If Jeannie could own the team, she'd still own the team. The reason they sold in the first place, the bus family,
Starting point is 00:39:24 was because in the modern NBA, the bus family are poor billionaires as opposed to the wealthy billionaires that you need to keep up with the Joneses. This is not a choice between Kushner slash Eiger and Jeannie. If the bus family could own this team as majority owners, they'd still be doing it. I am not rooting for Jeannie.
Starting point is 00:39:49 I am not rooting for the siblings. I am rooting for speed because the faster this gets resolved, the faster the sale gets resolved, the faster the new guys take over, the faster things can go forward with a team. And the more, you know, because they can't do, you know,
Starting point is 00:40:10 the stuff they need to do for Luca, which we didn't get to today, but we'll get through maybe over the rest of the week. Like, there's, the clock on Luca stuff doesn't stop because all of this is happening. That's what I said in the second second, we got a little sidetrack,
Starting point is 00:40:23 but like, this is an incredibly important season and another season that follows. And the Lakers have monumental business to take care of that will slow the basketball stuff down. Yes. I am rooting for speed, not people. And if this gets ugly or falls, the sale falls through whatever it is,
Starting point is 00:40:46 the future of the basketball product, which is why we're all here is in jeopardy. So I'm rooting for speed.
