Locked On Lakers - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Lakers - Is Gabe Vincent a Mismatch Magnet? Could Marcus Smart Help the Lakers "Set the Rules?"
Episode Date: October 24, 2025The Lakers have a host of things to figure out ahead of tonight's game at the Crypt against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Not just because Minnesota is back in town after summarily dispatching the purpl...e and gold in last year's playoffs -- though that's part of it -- they also badly need a bounceback performance following Tuesday's disappointment against the Warriors. So how to get there? One topic of conversation is still the starting lineup, and how Gabe Vincent was a magnet for mismatch hunting against Golden State. Jimmy Butler found him repeatedly, and ate Vincent for lunch. So what to do about that? Would he be better off the bench? Very likely, but if he starts again the other issue was the three points he scored. For a guy out there to help grease the wheels and provide some spacing, he was a non-factor. Another path? Marcus Smart suggests the Lakers get more physical, and be the toughest team every night, because it's the toughest team that gets to set the rules. And the Lakers without LeBron might just need to find ways to set the rules... assuming those rules involve very physical play that slows a game down and dares the refs to make calls. Luka Dončić is incredible, but the Lakers will need to find an identity and style of play that goes beyond just that for them to thrive while LeBron is out, and even when he's back. Let's see if it starts tonight. HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Gambling in the NBA! SEGMENT 2: Is Vincent too small? SEGMENT 3: How to set the rules? Hey, everyone, welcome to Locked on Lakers for Friday.
Brian Kaminetsky, Andy Kaminetsky, as a gambling scandal rocks the NBA.
Lakers got bigger problems, namely the Minnesota Timberwolves.
What can they do to get their first win of the season?
We'll tell you next.
You are Locked on Lakers.

No matter how, how are you, get your podcast?
This one's always going to be free for you.
It's never being behind paywall.
And of course, Andy, locked on Lakers on YouTube.
So we're over 36,000 subscribers who channel are all hanging out.
They're talking to us.
They're talking to each other.
They are certainly absorbed into what is happening around the NBA
with the big gambling scandal that broke on Thursday.
They are equally, perhaps, if not more, I would probably say,
more, invested in what is going to happen on Friday night when the Lakers play their second game of
the season, welcoming the formidable Minnesota Timberwolves to the Crypto.com arena. Of course,
we all remember what happened the last time the Lakers saw the wolves. It was not pretty.
So plenty to prove for the Lakers in this game, plenty for us to prove, Andy, over the next
half hour or so. Before we get to it, we need to let everyone know that today's episode.
So it's brought to you by Fanduel right now.
New customers can bet just $5.
And if you bet wins, you get $300 in bonus bets to use across the app.
Head to fandual.com to get started.
We will get you updated on everything that's expected for Friday night, including who is going to be playing and who might not.
But first, Andy, this gambling thing was kind of crazy.
And at least tangentially involves the Lakers and LeBron.
Yeah, just so it's clear right from the jump, the Lakers and LeBron, it should be emphasized, again, your word, tangentially.
There is no evidence thus far, no reporting thus far.
And were I to guess nothing in the future that implicates, I mean, forget the Lakers, LeBron specifically in this.
where LeBron is connected is because for those unaware, there was a big,
a big series of arrest today involving Terry Rozier, Chauncey Billups, the NBA
Hall of Famer and soon to be ex-Portland Trailblazers head coach.
Currently on leave.
Right.
Yes.
Unspecified leave.
HR called him in.
Johnson, we're going to have to put you on leave until this got sort of.
worded out. But also Damon Jones, former teammate of LeBron's former unofficial Lakers assistant coach,
and he has been implicated specifically accused of tipping off gamblers about information involving
the Lakers with games. One of them, a game that it is known, a game that is very heavily implied,
LeBron was not going to play in. Therefore, hey, good info.
for you to have, the Lakers may end up losing this game because there's no LeBron.
You should bet heavy on it.
And then there's another game.
That was in 2003.
And then there's a game in 2024 that there's not a lot of details involved that have been
given so far other than just it involved a star player.
I did a little bit of researching the game in question, which was on January 15, 2024.
LeBron against the Thunder, LeBron returned from a four-game absence.
I am guessing this is purely speculative, but it feels common sense,
that Damon gave these same shady people.
Heads up, hey, LeBron's playing.
You might want to put down some action on it.
People don't know yet, but he's going to end up playing.
Damon Jones also allegedly added in a text before the 2023 game,
bet enough so D. Jones can eat now.
Reminder, don't put this bleep in writing, man.
It's like that quote from the wire, you taking notes on a mother bleeping criminal conspiracy?
Like, just don't do it.
Right, that's, write this stuff down.
So, yeah, we'll see where this goes.
There is, it's not the first time the league has dealt with a gambling scandal.
More information is going to come out about this over time.
It comes at a sensitive time with the league, with league partners,
as sports gambling is obviously a much.
more mainstream part of the NBA and sports more broadly. So it is going to be a fascinating story,
no doubt, and one that will unfold.
It would be absolutely stunning if it turned out that LeBron was actually
implicate. I'm just so it's made perfectly clear to our audience,
neither one of us thinks there is a shot in hell that LeBron will eventually be
implicated, quite frankly, if Damon Jones needed money that bad and let LeBron know,
it would be much simple for LeBron just to say, how much do you need?
It'd be way simpler.
So, yeah, we'll see what happens.
It is a really interesting story to follow for the league.
But bigger problems for the Lakers, they need to figure out a way to win on Friday night
against Minnesota Timberwolves.
It does not get any easier.
For them, the wolves come into town as one of those sort of,
next-tier Western Conference contenders who absolutely have had the same conversations, Andy,
that we have been having coming into the season about how, like, you know, Oklahoma City's
one twisted ankle away from opening the door to a lot of people, a lot of teams in Minnesota
believes that they are one of them off of their playoff success over the last couple of seasons.
So this game, it's a little bit different for the Lakers in terms of a challenge,
because the wolves are a more traditional lineup than Golden State.
They will play, you know, Rudy Gobert at center and, you know,
Nas Reid behind him and stuff like that.
So it's a different group, but it doesn't get any easier with the wolves in town,
that's for sure.
No, and Anthony Edwards had a very similar season opening to Luca in that he absolutely
crushed it.
His team happened to get the win, but Anthony Edwards played out of his mind.
I took a lot of bleep from many people in our audience when in our entries for the locked-on top 100,
I had Anthony Edwards slightly ahead of Luca just because I was, you know, you're splitting hairs.
Anybody that wants to say they think Luca's better than Anthony Edwards, you're not going to get a particularly big argument for me.
I think it's perfectly defensible.
I was quite literally factoring in defense,
and that's what ultimately put it over the top for me.
But Luca is still pretty flipping awesome,
and either way, you've got two supernovas
that are going to be going up against each other,
and both of them, I think, are on that sort of,
Luca is more inside the MVP race than I think Anthony Edwards is,
but I do not think it'll take much for Anthony Edwards to,
really insert himself forcefully into that conversation because he's really good.
He's really charismatic and somebody that garners a lot of attention.
And like you said, his team's really good.
So you combine him with, you know, guys like Jaden McDaniels and, you know,
Terrence Shannon off the bench and stuff like that.
You know, the wolves are a different challenge because they are larger,
significantly larger than, than Golden State.
But they also will present some of the same challenges athletically that the Warriors do.
I mean, notably, I'm sorry, stronger challenges athletically than the Warriors do, notably starting with Anthony Edwards, but then you start moving around the rest of that roster.
So the Lakers are going to have to counter some of the stuff that came up in Tuesday's game.
They are going to have to figure out how to be more stout defensively,
how to dot the eyes and cross the T's, you know, guarding the lasers.
You know, they didn't do a very good job with Buddy Heald and Steph Curry in transition.
Are you able to do that?
You know, JJ pointed out Dante D. Vincenzo specifically as guys that need to be picked up in transition.
Are you able to handle a very physical Minnesota defense?
That's something that's going to be relevant to some comments that Marcus Smart made
at practice on Thursday.
And are you going to be able to Andy to defend potential mismatches as they come up?
And in that we're talking about Gabe Vincent from Tuesday.
So we'll get to all of these things and more next.

Would it be beneficial for the Lakers to welcome a bottom feet or somewhere,
maybe find a way to get a little cohesion before you start playing the contenders in the West again?
Sure, that's not the way the world works.
They are going to have to figure out handling these mismatches like we talked about on Tuesday.
They're going to have to figure out how to be kind of the bully that maybe mitigates
some of the athletic deficits that they might face.
this size question, Andy,
was a big one coming
out of Tuesday's game, something you talked to
Gabe Vincent about earlier in the week.
There were several possessions yesterday where you ended up on
say like Jimmy Blubler and a matchup like that,
you're going to be giving up a lot of size that can happen.
No problem.
How do you approach it? I just guard them.
If they want to give Jimmy the ball a hundred times,
they're probably going to lose with me guarding him in a block.
I'm fine with him. Even not Jimmy specifically,
but like in general when you have those type of matchups,
that could happen over the course.
season. How do you approach those when you're giving up that size?
I just guard them. I don't really see it as a size give up. It's more like if this is how you guys
want to play, that's in our favor. So go for it. Try to beat Gay Vincent one-on-one in the post.
You're probably not going to score 100 points. So I think we'll be all right.
Gabe Vincent going third person when some pesky pencil neck reporters asking questions.
Love it. Podcaster. Exactly.
I think this to me
it's less about Gabe Vincent than it is just about
I agree with you sort of how you structure the starting lineup
because one it's a misconception
when Lakers start Gabe they are not playing small
they are not running out there with a small lineup
they're still starting you know Vincent is
is relatively small by NBA standards
but the rest of the lineup isn't it's not like
you know Reeves is 6-5
Lucas 6.6.
Ruiz 6.8 and Aiton is 7 feet tall.
It is a pretty conventional lineup that they're putting out.
There are other teams around the league that have players who are 6 foot 3 that play for their team.
The question becomes either what arrangement do you put out?
Are you capable enough around that player defensively?
to make it so that mismatch that the team is looking for,
whatever it may be can be countered in some way.
And then the other thing that I think is part of this is,
look, Gabe might get picked on.
Jimmy Butler is a really good player and has been doing this in the NBA for a long time.
Gabe, they can get away with Gabe as a starter,
occasionally getting picked on.
And I agree with them.
There will be times when teams try to focus too much on getting that mismatch and you know,
you tilt your offense in ways that it shouldn't be.
We see that all the time across the NBA.
The other thing that's got to happen, though, is Gabe can't score four points.
Like, you know, three points to four shot.
Like he was a non-entity offensively.
And he's out there to be able to spread the floor a little bit, be a shooter, and provide some
balance and stuff like that. You can't give it up on both ends of the floor. And so they have to
find if you're going to start somebody who isn't as strong defensively because you believe it will
give you a little bit more offense, then you've got to get the offense. If you're going to
start somebody, Jared Vanderbilt, who you believe will give you better defense, then you better
get the defense and figure out how to compensate offensively. The Lakers have to figure out what exactly,
what kind of balance it is that they're looking for.
I think you can get the best sort of of both worlds if he's capable of it with smart,
but if they disagree, they need to figure out how they're going to play.
Yeah, I mean, I understand what you're saying about how Gabe just by himself does not turn
the overall lineup small.
You're correct about that, but I think it also kind of misses the point because when you're
talking about specifically where Gabe's size hurts defensively, the fact that the rest of the
guys aren't small for their position would matter that would matter more if they weren't all
some degree of defensive minuses themselves and like that's actually where the size issue becomes an
issue if they were all bigger guys for their position and all solid to good defenders then I think
it becomes much easier.
Correct.
Absolutely.
So in that sense, I think you're correct.
I just think you're kind of framing it the wrong way.
Also, as far as the way Gabe's talking about this with, you know, if Jimmy Butler or pick,
you know, if Gabe starts Friday, and you don't think they're going to, you know,
they're going to try to figure out ways to get Anthony Edwards match.
Of course they were.
Of course they will.
They'll look for ways to do it with Jade McDaniels, Julius Randall, whatever.
And Gabe is correct that if, say, you've fixated your entire night on trying to target Gabe Vincent,
you will likely end up completely throwing your offense out of whack, or at least potentially,
but teams are not going to spend their entire night doing it.
However, they can pick their spots and make it really effective like Golden State did
in the opening night against, in particular, Gabe.
I mean, Jimmy torched him whenever they end up matched up against each other,
but you only need to pick so many possessions.
and if if they score it like a 75% clip or a 60% clip
in those individual one-on-ones against Gabe,
then again,
I understand what he means.
To be fair to Vincent,
that's not going to happen every time.
They're not going to score.
A lot of these matchups,
actually, I think it's too small.
The math is,
but some of those are Jimmy Butler scoring from outside.
That is not related necessarily to,
or other guys scoring from the perimeter,
which is not related necessarily automatically to Gabe Vincent's height.
You know, there will be times when, you know, the good defense will be beaten by better
offense.
Bad defense won't be penalized.
My point is, he's not a good enough to be honest, he's not a good enough defender
to offset both the lack of size and that he is an inconsistent offensive player to begin with.
And like we talked about before.
The problem with what happened on Tuesday is that they didn't, you know, they didn't get the defense, which is going to happen sometimes. Credit to Minnesota. I'm sorry, Golden State. Whatever. But it's also because he scored three points. And so you got the worst of both of it. And so the Lakers have, the Lakers have to figure it out because if you're worried about smarts durability and the way he plays, and I want to get into some stuff that's,
Smart said the next segment.
But if you're worried about the way that Smart plays,
because you've got to keep this guy healthy,
which I totally understand.
And maybe he's,
you don't think he's ready yet.
Then you're starting right now,
either likely Vincent or Vanderbilt.
Either one of those guys,
you're going to have to figure out
how to compensate
for the stuff that they don't do well.
And the Lakers are in a place
where they are
going to be less protected with their more flawed players. That is something we kind of hoped
that they'd be able to bridge a little bit with the roster that they've put back together.
And I think Aitin's going to be better on Friday than he was. I think Vincent will be better
on Friday than he was. I expect them to look a little bit better or play a little bit better
than they did on Tuesday. But, you know, Gabe isn't going to morph math.
magically into a completely different player.
Jared Vanderbilt is not going to, you know,
he was all equally bad, I think, on Tuesday.
He's not going to morph into a different place.
So the Lakers have.
But I think his weaknesses matter.
I think his weaknesses matter less in the starting lineup
than they do in something that becomes closer to Luca and the banshees.
Like it exacerbates more what he doesn't do when he's going to
more non-stop.
It certainly matters less if Vincent's not going to score either.
That I would agree with you.
But I would talk about some of the stuff that Smart said at practice on Thursday,
because if you're looking for an identity that the Lakers could grab onto that might change this equation a little bit,
he was kind of offering one.
We'll get to it next.

Yeah, so I mean, look, the Lakers have
Questions that they had to figure out with their starting lineup and how they want to play it, what they want to do, and where they want to protect guys the most.
Because, you know, like, I don't disagree.
You can probably protect, in theory, you can protect Vando's offense a little bit more with the starting unit and Gabe's defensive potential matchup issues a little bit more with the second unit.
But neither of those is full-proofed, potentially create other problems.
One thing the Lakers could do, Andy, though, is build out an identity that plays potentially into strengths.
Marcus Smart was being asked about Minnesota's size and how the Lakers could counter that.
And Marcus Smart said, you got to hit first.
He said the toughest team sets the rules.
And that's the motto.
I've been in this league for 12 years.
That's always been the motto.
the team that comes out more physical.
The momentum is kind of going their way,
and that's how it is.
We want to be the toughest team from start to end.
I love that.
I mean, that idea of the toughest team sets the rules is an interesting one.
And as much as we want to see the Lakers,
like, kind of get out there and have this beautiful flowing offense
and do all that stuff,
and they can obviously build more structure into what they're doing.
They may be in a position where much,
knocking things up, being a grindy, physical,
clutch and grab kind of team,
which is exemplified by the way that Marcus Smart plays,
that could be the best way for them to roll until LeBron gets back.
There's a couple more examples that Marcus is talking about
in the way that when you set that tone often dictate the rules
for as much as people often complain about the physical style of Oklahoma
the city's defense between guys like Alex Caruso and Lou Dork,
and Kaysen Wallace and Hartenstein down the line,
they get away with it because they make it very clear every single game,
30 seconds in,
this is how we are going to play.
And after a while,
referees,
whether they realize it or not,
they just start officiating it with the subconscious acceptance,
knowledge,
whatever you want to call it,
this is the window.
Another example,
of it, different, different setting, but same basic concept.
Draymond Green, I think sometimes goes out of his way to get his first technical or his first
flagrant or whatever because he knows I got to basically murder somebody to get tossed because
they don't want to eject me.
And then once I get that first technical or that first flagrant, I can get away with a lot
of bleep.
I can get away with a lot.
and it's ridiculous and it's transparent.
And you would think by now the referees would realize how they are getting grifted,
but they've apparently, whether subconsciously, whatever, decided this is how we deal with Dremont.
There's something else too.
Damn right he knows it.
Oh.
It gives the rest of the team kind of to a permission structure to start.
It's like when Dremon does it,
it moves the window far enough so other players can get it.
And you need to, the Draymond role has to be played by a certain kind of player.
Like we see it sometimes where Vando goes out and tries to play like really edgy and stuff like that.
And it doesn't work nearly as well for a couple reasons.
First one is Vando's not as good.
And he's just not as talented a player as Draymond Green.
He is not as,
Drey Amund is a savant as a defender.
Like he sees defense as well or better than 99.9% of the people who've ever played the game.
He's just, he is that good on that side of the ball.
And so that makes a huge difference.
He's also respected in ways that, you know, Vando just isn't.
Like, you know, for I think reasons that everybody understands.
hands. Smart can kind of be that heel for the Lakers in ways that Vando can't because Smart,
he's not Draymond, he's not going to the Hall of Fame, but Mark Smart's pretty well respected
around the league. He has won a DPO-Y. We're talking about a veteran who has the respect of other
veterans. And we saw on Tuesday when they're coming over a screen and Smart and Steph get tangled up.
There's zero question smarts looking for contact in these situations.
And essentially chicken wings, Steph.
And he got called for a flagrant and rightly so.
Like I'm watching that replay going, oh, yeah, that's the right call.
There's no way.
But like, I don't want to say you obviously don't root for players to hurt other players,
certainly not Steph Curry.
But the Lakers could use a heel.
And, you know, smart, I think to be that guy.
And I do think Vando does some of that for them.
He does.
But like, then you, like, Vando's like the secondary guy, like, who can come in and do this
things.
I just don't think he can be your lead character.
No, I'm not saying he can be the lead heel.
I'm just saying he willingly plays it.
But to your point, they need either two heels or a heel that you can, like a
one-a heel that you can keep on the court longer.
Yeah.
And so, like, if they can set this identity,
And the part of this that Smart followed up with to that quote was, you know, he was asked directly, can't I think by Mike Trudell, I think it was asked him, you know, can this physicality that sort of taking it to the other team, setting the rules, so to speak, can this be the sort of thing that can mitigate disadvantages you might have because you're a little less athletic or you're a little less big?
both of which the Lakers become when LeBron doesn't play.
It's not just you lose LeBron's skill,
you lose LeBron's playmaking, his vision and all that kind of stuff.
He is still, especially on offense,
getting up and down the floor,
a freight train that nobody wants to get in the way of.
You see a lot of people making business decisions
to get out of LeBron's way in transition.
He's also huge.
LeBron is an enormous wall of a human.
And so when you take him,
way you sacrifice size and strength. It's it like there's a lot that goes out the window for the 15
games LeBron can't play. And so they need like that's what again. I think smart is on to something with
this idea of what can we do as an identity to pull teams a little closer to us. And I think
this is one of the ways to do it. Well, I was thinking about um, Rui La, in talking about the
Minnesota series. I don't remember if he said this during the actual series or like his exit
interview or if it was on media day, but he talked about it would be nice to have somebody else
in there to try to get rebounds away from Rudy Gobert, who is A, one of the best rebounders in
the league, and B, like five or six inches taller than me. Like there's only so, I think he said
something in the group, like I'm wrestling with a bear. Like, there's only so much I can do.
enter D'Andre Aiton, and that is going to become really between D'Andre Aiton and a hopefully more functional Jared Vanderbilt, that's going to be a big deal on the glass.
And the glass last year was a huge problem for the Lakers in that series.
Minnesota grabbed over five games, 219 rebounds.
The Lakers, 195.
They averaged almost 44 rebounds a game, the Timberwolves.
The Lakers 39.
And you're going to be trying to offset this without LeBron, who not surprisingly,
led the Lakers in rebounds per game in that series.
So they're going to have to, that's going to be a really big part of what they look to do
to offset that physicality, offset that size.
It's another reason why, I mean, everything I said about Gabe Vincent broadly,
I think specifically, he's just a, the wolves are a bad.
match matchup for him starting.
Like it may be yeah,
I will see what JJ does.
I mean I if I'd guess he's going to roll out the same lineup but we'll see.
But I think you know for all of the there are big team they are and I mentioned.
They are and I mentioned you know Vincent's you know for the focus on the defense and
the matchups totally valid.
I'm not saying we got to ignore it.
Don't forget the three points.
DeAndre Aiden people were focusing on you know kind of looking out of sort of
sports offensively and he was he had 10 points.
He was the only other Laker besides the big two in double figures,
but it was hardly a powerful offensive game from Aiton.
I'm over here waving my arms going six rebounds.
Like that, that's not enough.
You know, like I can live with, there'll be plenty of nights where I can live with 10 points.
There will be very few nights the Lakers can live with six rebounds.
It's like they need to do like the players who are here need to be able to do.
the things that are kind of supposed to be in their wheelhouse that don't involve carrying the team.
Gabe Vincent, if he's going to play, it's in part because he's a floor stretcher who can make three
pointers and give space to the Lakers offense.
If he takes two or three shots, four shots and finishes with three points, that is a failure.
If DeAndre Aden finishes the game with six rebounds when he plays 30 minutes or whatever he did,
that is a failure.
And those things have to change.
We'll see if they do tonight against the wolves.
