Locked On Lakers - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Lakers - Lakers Use Second Half Defense, Balanced Scoring to Beat Heat 117-108
Episode Date: January 16, 2025The Lakers collapsed over the final 15 minutes of Monday's game against San Antonio. On Wednesday, the Lakers looked stagnant and sloppy for the first 24 minutes, giving up 66 points and falling behi...nd by 12 at the break. For a 20-17 team, playing a Heat squad without Jimmy Butler, they simply had to find a way to win. And it wasn't easy, but over the course of the second half, the Lakers increased the pressure defensively, holding Miami to 19 points in the third quarter, and only 23 in the fourth to win (relatively) comfortably, 117-108. It was a strange game, with Miami spending as much of it as they could in a zone, and the Lakers struggling to figure out how to penetrate it. The Lakers couldn't get any kind of production from the bench. But while it wasn't pretty and it's hard to feel like the Lakers discovered (re-discovered?) some sort of winning formula, they found a way in a game they had to have. There's a lot of work left to build the Lakers back up once again into a team that feels capable of consistently good play. It remains to be seen if they can even get there. But in the meantime, they have to figure out how to win enough games so that if the team does find—and then sustain—the next level, they're using that improvement to solidify a seed up in the top six in the West, not scrambling just to get into the play-in rounds. At the least, the first step was rediscovering the defensive intensity that helped the Lakers win six straight a couple weeks back. These Lakers aren't always going to play well, but they can always play hard. Forcing 20 Miami turnovers should have led to more than 23 points the other way, but those points plus the shots Miami wasn't able to take were what swung the game. The homestand was interrupted by tragedy, changing the complexion of this stretch of season that was supposed to go LA's way, getting them prepped for the long roadie at the end of the month. That's not how it's going to play out anymore. But if Wednesday was a "show me" game, where the Lakers had to prove they still were willing to work hard for a win after (bleeping) the bed on Monday, they cleared that bar... in the second half, at least. HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers manage to grind out a win. SEGMENT 2: Balanced scoring, and Rui's best game in a long time. SEGMENT 3: Lots of work left to do, but they've got to win in the meantime. Your favorite podcast now has a newsletter! Hey, everyone. Welcome to Locked-on Lakers for Thursday.
Brian Komenetsky, Andy Kaminaske,
the Lakers crank up the defense in the second half against Miami
and get a badly needed win.
We'll break it down next.
You are Locked-on Lakers.

a podcast. It's always free. It's never behind a paywall and locked on Lakers on YouTube is where over
27,000 subscribers to the channel are pleased that the Lakers broke that three-game losing streak.
They do beat the Miami Heat 117 to 108 in a game that was much more of a struggle than the
final score might indicate. And for a half, if nothing else. The first.
half was a serious struggle.
The second half was, I think, pretty well controlled by the Lakers,
but the first half did not leave you to believe that the second half would ever happen.
And, you know, it was, we'll break a lot of this down because I feel like this was a game
that was both extraordinarily important, first of all, from a got-a-have-it kind of perspective.
We basically called this as much of a must win as you can have in January as a game can be.
But also, like, it represents to me at least, and I'll explain this later,
kind of how this is going to get put back together if the Lakers are going to go somewhere.
So we'll get in all that in a second.
Do it to let people know that today's episode.
It's brought to you by Fandual from the first whistle of the final drive.
FanDuel makes the NFL playoffs even more exciting.
now new customers can bet $5 and get $300
bucks in bonus bets if you win that first bet so visit fandule.com to get started so
if you're subscribing to the newsletter the locked on lakers newsletter you can get it locked
on daily.com right over there and bottom of the screen there um if you saw that like it was
i wrote the the newsletter for for for wednesday and called this a show me game you know
after that huge collapse in the last 15
16 minutes of the game on Monday against San Antonio.
It's like, okay, show me what you want to be this year.
Like, do you want to be a team that matters?
Does any of that, do you care about any of that?
Go play hard.
And for the first half, Andy, what they showed me was,
eh, might not be so interested.
I mean, the defense was awful in the first half.
to say that they let Tyler Hero run wild in that first half.
Like I tweeted out at Cam Brothers.
If Tyler Hero only played the Lakers, he would have MJ buried in the goat conversations.
Like you would think Tyler Hero was the greatest player to ever pick up a basketball,
the greatest scorer to ever pick up a basketball.
He was going crazy from behind the arc.
The Lakers were often just really scrambled, trying to keep up with him,
trying to keep up with wherever the ball would go when he would give it up or Miami would move it around.
And they were also clearly getting very frustrated with Miami breaking out his own defense in the second quarter
that completely discombobulated their own offense and probably did.
didn't help them maintain the right mentality defensively, and they went into halftime down 12.
And like I said before, not giving you confidence that the turnaround and as extreme a turnaround as it was,
was in the works. But they figured out a lot in that second half.
You know, J.J. Redick was asked what changed between the first half and the second.
And, you know, after the, and this is truly my favorite part about every, you know, postgame is the length of the pregnant pause from Reddick before he answers a question.
J.J. loves himself some J.J. Reddick words. He loves the buildup to the words. He loves the presentation.
Like there's always, remember the episode of Friends where Joey was explaining the art of soap opera acting?
And he said, you do, you do the one face, the smell the fart.
You know, like, just furious.
JJ does that before every first response.
Like, you would, you would think that the entire world is like waiting on pins and needles.
for this thing that JJ Redick is about to say.
It's hilarious.
That combination of, I think, like you say,
some theatricality with particular,
on some nights,
almost like, you know,
the version of your grandmother's expression.
If you don't have anything nice,
don't say anything at all,
but like, you know you've got to say something.
How am I going to say the thing tonight?
He was asked the question,
what changed between the first and second?
have since he said we didn't do anything different schematically.
The word he used was implored.
I implored the team to play harder.
I mean, and that's it.
Like, you know, and we talked about it in the San Antonio game, Andy.
Like, they're going to.
And after the Dallas game, by the way, too.
Sure.
Like there.
And after many other games.
Actually, a lot of games.
It's been a theme.
They are not a wildly talented group.
They are not a bad team, but like, you know,
they don't have talent to spare all around the roster.
They can just like kind of pace themselves or whatever.
Their focus and their energy has,
and their effort has to be high all the time.
That's not easy to do.
I'm not saying it's easy to be focused and dialed in and all that stuff all the time.
Like nobody does that at their jobs.
But this is the reality we live in.
And you could see the difference in the first half and the second half, even as that third quarter kind of made a run,
Miami makes a run back back.
You know, the Lakers get it to within five.
Miami pushes it back to 10.
The Lakers get it within like one.
And Miami pushed it back to like six or seven.
Like there was, it wasn't instant like take over the game, but you could see something went up 20% whatever it is between the second quarter and the third quarter.
And they decided what they decided to show me, show us, show everyone was, okay, we're not ready to quite just kind of give in on this season.
JJ talked about also how the amount of talking that they did on the court increased in the second half.
He pointed out Jackson Hayes, who had, I mean, it's not a high bar to clear,
but Jackson had easily his best game since coming back from injury,
particularly in the second half.
I actually thought Jackson played a really nice game,
but JJ talked about Hayes being a very vocal backline.
He also spotlighted LeBron, AD, and Reeves just for their,
talking. He said those three led tonight. And I imagine, you know, when when those three guys are
engaged at that level. And I say that because we have talked about the level of engagement from
these guys that is going to be necessary. Like you mentioned before, it's not easy to do that
for 48 minutes a game, 82 games a year. And you're not wrong. The problem is these guys don't have a choice.
Yeah, absolutely.
You're either, you know, quote Ocean's 11, you're either in or you're out.
Like these guys are not going to be able to dial it up at will or paper over certain weaknesses.
Like shortcuts, like they're not capable of it.
They don't have enough talent for it.
It doesn't mean they don't have enough talent to win games.
It just means they're going to have to try to at minimum.
scrape at their ceiling at all times because they're not that good of a team when they don't.
So a lot of individual performances that we want to make sure we acknowledge.
And, you know, Rui Hachamura, easily his best game, possibly his best game as a Laker,
but easily his best game in a while.
LeBron great fourth quarter.
Anthony Davis was very active.
There's a lot of, there was a lot of stuff in here.
Really good point guarding from Austin Reeves.
Yeah.
second half, Gabe Vincent kind of came alive in ways that they needed.
But to kind of finish this conversation off, there's an aspect of what you're talking about
that I think is really clear between the second and third quarters that kind of explains or
reflects what you're getting at about having to scrape at it and just work through it no matter
what. And I'll tell you what it is next.

Lakers is also brought to you by skims. I'm somebody who's actually really picky about underwear.
I only like boxer briefs. That's it. They have to have a certain feel, certain tightness,
but also certain looseness. It's like Goldie locks. They got to be just right for me.
So when I heard that we could try out some skims,
underwear over it locked on. My first thought was skims makes men's underwear. And yeah, they do.
A lot of different styles. And then my second thought was, I'm going to like him. And the answer is,
oh, hell yeah, I'm going to like him. I tried the three inch and five inch boxer briefs just to see what
the difference is. And the answer is one's three inches, the other's five inches long. Two inches,
baby. That's the difference. Yeah, otherwise exactly the same, which is awesome. They're comfortable,
they're soft. They don't bunch up. They look really good. Partner is going to recommend them.
highly, highly into them.
Some days it's a three-inch day.
Some days it's a five-inch day.
But either way, partners happy.

way so I mentioned the newsletter you see it in the bottom corner if you're watching on
YouTube I also want to mention the postcast Dave Palais another way to get more
content from the channel so make sure you're looking for that after the end of every
game but I think one of the things that really gets at this idea of having some
perseverance and just having a little bit of fight to get through something
the Lakers struggled immensely with Miami's zone like they just
could not figure out how to get inside of it.
And you know, you can have a discussion over what skill set they were missing,
whether it's shooting, whether it's playmaking to kind of move those pieces around
and get into the middle of it.
Stu Lance on the Lakers broadcast was about ready to crawl onto the court himself
and just beg the Lakers to get in the middle of that zone.
But in the first half, you made the point that their inability to score,
and their frustration with that zone hurt them on the defensive side of the ball.
In the second half, it did not.
Like, they separated those two things.
And they actually started using their defense to create better offensive opportunities.
They forced 20 turnovers from Miami,
and I think only turned that into 24 points,
with not necessarily a great ratio.
But those points combined,
with the opportunities to score that Miami did not get.
That was the difference in the game.
And so, you know, this was a game that they won on the strength of their defense.
And you could start to see, at least I felt like you could start to see a turn, Andy,
when in the third quarter the defense held even when the offense was still struggling.
Yeah, they really started becoming very disruptive as a team.
I thought Max Christie in particular did a very good job being disruptive in that second half.
I mean, Tyler Hero still ended up having a good game, but he was less effective in the second half.
They were doing a better job running him off the three point line at the very least.
But, you know, Christie forced him into an air ball.
There was another time where down low, he did a really good job defending Jaime Hakez Jr.
during a post-up, forced a miss.
Like I thought there were other guys like Jackson, I thought, was very disruptive in the second half.
Gabe Vincent, I thought, had moments of being very disruptive.
Rui, I believe, had a pretty big steal in the second half as well.
But, and again, as a team, they did it nicely.
But I thought Christie was the guy that stood out the most there.
They also, I think in part because they were able to create these turnovers and just get up court quicker,
it was a preventing Miami from being able to set that zone as frequently in the first place,
but also it was allowing them to get inside it when they were trying to do it faster.
They did they did a better job of just getting into what they were going to do faster,
which included trying to get somebody inside that zone.
And, you know, the two things that you want to try to do to break a zone is through shooting.
and also through entering that middle where it's unoccupied,
Rui in particular was just killing it through backcuts
and finding that unoccupied space.
And they just did a better job putting them in position
to actually fight that zone.
Yeah, and you talk about Hero having a really good night.
He's having a really good season.
And one of the big differences is at least in the second half, you didn't get, you know, the other guys.
Like the randos on the other side on the other side were not dominant.
You know, you didn't have other guys going off.
And so like if Hero gets his in the second half, and I'm looking at it, he had 22 at the half and finished with 38, 34.
So, you know, a better job in the second half, but it's not like he was shut down.
down completely. But, you know, if he gets his, but like everybody else is is kind of clamped down,
the Lakers only gave up 19 in the third and 23 in the fourth. Like that's fine. Like Tyler Hero can
have a good, really good second half, a really good game overall if nobody else is really doing much.
And, you know, again, they kept Miami from shooting. You know, even if you think the Lakers could
have done a better job converting those turnovers into points.
it's you still get a benefit there from Miami not having the opportunity to score and I just
I was saying you're getting them out of rhythm too like and desperately needed to do that with
hero in particular like that guy was I mean Miami shot really well from behind the arc period in the
first half but you especially had to disrupt him and they just did a much better job it's the first time
I think, you know, they didn't play a bad first half against San Antonio on Monday.
You know, for the first like seven minutes of the third quarter, they were fine.
But, you know, they, this, this, what we saw in the second half on the defensive side of the ball
looked like the six game win streak.
And I think it's the first time, you know, in those three games that they lost, there were moments where they, you know,
oh, look, they got some hop to them and whatever.
But this was the first time it looked like that.
You get know, Anthony Davis in the fourth quarter going to the floor,
something else that Redick pointed out as really important moments in the game and things like that.
When you see guys like that diving on the floor and creating turnovers and going after loose balls,
that's another level of effort that just needs to be there all the time.
That sequence that you're pointing out, it was in the second half,
AD helped force a turnover, dove on the floor, push the loose ball out.
The Lakers ran, I believe it was Austin that began the break.
And then the ball gets past to Rui, who upfakes at the three-point line, drives inside,
whips a lefty kickout.
Like, this, I realize there's like seven to choose from, but this may be the best pass of Rue
Hachemore's career.
Like pinpoint left-handed pass to LeBron for.
a corner three. Like that sequence, you know, when you turn disruptive defense into really well
orchestrated offense, like that shows you what the team can be. But it also reflects the need
to play at that type of urgency level again for like 48 minutes. They don't have a choice.
Like, you know, we've seen at least possibly the Celtics might be, you know, kind of waiting for the important games to kick off.
I know they've been dealing with a bit of injuries and stuff like that, but there's also, I think, a bit of a sense of they haven't quite entered the mode yet.
Whether you think that's a good idea or not, Boston has earned the benefit of the doubt.
And their roster is certainly talented.
Let's say they've got so much talent on that roster.
They can win games.
Like, you know.
Peyton Pritchard outsores the Lakers bench regularly by himself.
Boston, like, strategically, like you look at it and say, like, okay, yeah, you ought to be preparing for a 100-game season, like, you know, at least, you know, 105, 100-60s.
Like, that's how many Boston expects to be playing this year.
The Lakers hope to be playing 90, 95, whatever, but they can't play.
for it like they can't be like well we got we got to hold something back um it's there was
you know by the way ruy that was his one assist so that way you don't have to differentiate between
that one that you're mentioning and any others so but we we've been picking on ruy for his rebound
he had eight in this game which is three more than he had in the three games that they lost combined
so um one of many nice bright spots in the box score um and let's break down some of the
that next. Locked on Lakers brought to you by Robin Hood with Robin Hood Gold. You can enjoy the

It should be noted real quick before we get to some of these individual performances.
Lakers did this defensively at the second half without Dorian and Finney Smith,
who was away from the team celebrating the birth of, I believe, a daughter.
But either way, whether it's a son or a daughter, congratulations.
to him. And I know when we get to Rui, you believe there's a connection here, perhaps, between DFS not being in the building and Rui playing well.
But I want to start here, though.
First of all, it's a son, just to be clear, it was baby boy.
Baby boy. Congratulations.
So I, we've made a point out of like the big three need to produce a certain amount.
Like they have to hit a level or the Lakers could theoretically be in trouble.
And I've always kind of put that level at 60 points.
And on Wednesday, the Lakers got 58.
And so you say to yourselves, okay, if they don't get more than that from LeBron, A.D. and Reeves,
something else has to happen.
So, you know, it's got to be picked up in other places.
And in this game, you got 23 from Rui Hachamori.
You got 16 from Max Christie.
You got 14 from Gabe Vincent.
It's like, oh, okay.
Well, that'll get you to 117.
And so they got the requisite contributions from other guys to make it so you didn't need 30 from AD,
28 from LeBron and 21 from Austin Reeves.
It's a great, like, night tonight, if they can get that.
kind of balance, it would be fantastic.
But it's an example of, okay, if you're not getting massive production from the big three,
other guys have to step up.
I mean, ideally it would happen more often this way.
But on Wednesday at least, it was a great formula.
And Rui, I think, was right in the middle of it.
Yeah, I mean, the only person more excited about DFS's new baby than DFS was Rui.
I mean, like, Rui's going to be telling DFS, man, look, these, these,
these first few days, you know, you never get that time back.
Really weeks.
The first few weeks.
You, between now and February 7th, you should spend all your time with that baby.
I would not leave that baby's side.
They grow up so fast.
They grow up so, so, so quickly.
But, yeah, I mean, Rui was fantastic in this game, really from the beginning.
Like, he, I think he had eight points in the first five or six minutes.
of this game, scoring from inside, scoring from outside.
Like I mentioned, there were a few plays where he drove, he drove from, you know,
beginning at the three point line.
He was getting fed over and over just on continual backcuts and baseline movement.
He also, too, took 15 shots in this game.
And this gets to something I talked about in Wednesday's show,
where I mentioned during the 10 and 4 start.
for this team where they looked offensively like they could be a real juggernaut.
Rui was averaging 11 shots per game.
To this point in January, before this game, he had been averaging seven.
That's, A, you're not going to get the type of balance that you were talking about and the
type of contributions, but also, if you're only going to have Rui shoot seven times a game,
then seriously trade him because there's no point to him being on the course.
You're not getting the thing that he does best.
Like this reflects, again, why you and I have said, we thought that it would make a lot of sense to flip him in DFS once Dorian's back in the starting lineup and the bench unit.
Because putting aside how DFS, we think actually fits well with the first unit and the responsibilities you have on both sides of the ball, Rui would get more shot.
Like one way or another, you need to be getting him more shot.
Otherwise, again, there's no point to him being on this roster.
Yeah.
And then you move past that.
You know, LeBron relatively quiet but very dominant until the fourth quarter.
And more even, I think, than the 22 points.
I think it's seven in the fourth.
Seven straight, I think, at one point in the fourth.
But the other big number for LeBron is nine assists against two turnovers.
And the Lakers, I do not think this is an accurate statistic because it felt to me like they turned the ball over 11 times in the first half.
But I think it was just raggedy offense and balls being tipped and nothing looking very clean.
But the end count is only six.
It was funny.
It feels like home cooking to me, but still, six.
You texted me during the first half of the game with like maybe three or four minutes left and you're like,
know they haven't solved that turnover problem.
I'm like,
well, they only have four,
but it feels like 10.
It did.
Like I was like,
and I looked at it and I realized what had happened is I looked too quickly at the box,
like the one of the boxes I was looking at the live score.
And I was actually looking at Miami's turnover rate,
but the Lakers were so raggedy.
I thought it was theirs.
But they,
you know,
they overall played a pretty,
I mean,
six is not a lot.
And even if it felt like more than that at certain times in the second half,
it was much cleaner at the very least.
in terms of taking care of the ball.
And you can see the difference.
The Lakers forced a ton of turnovers.
They didn't give up a lot of possessions on their own.
And so, you know, 13 and 34 from three point range doesn't hurt as much when, you know,
when you're not giving the ball away.
And then overall, they were 47 of 90 from the floor.
So over 50% shooting.
And again, not giving possessions away.
and then you, you know, you compare that to only 73 field goal attempts for the heat.
And that's where you get the margins.
The Lakers have to take care of the basketball.
And, you know, most nights, a lot of nights over the course of year, they've used a free-throw disparity.
That didn't happen on Wednesday.
The thing that they, you know, you can just almost always draw a straight line to, Andy,
is the turnovers and on Wednesday only two from LeBron.
You know, Reeves had one against 14 assists.
Like, that's getting it done.
And so, you know, kudos.
I wanted to make sure that we pointed out Austin as a facilitator,
and he was terrific, particularly in the second half.
The first half, Austin had five assists,
but I thought he was a little.
bit wild at times. There was one play where he was running the break and flipped the ball to
LeBron as a trailer when I think honestly he had a better opportunity to layup.
LeBron got fouled, but he almost like killed LeBron in the process. But the second half,
Austin had nine assists against zero turnovers, six assists in the fourth quarter again,
zero turnovers. And as somebody who is,
mentioned many times that I have concerns that there's too much on Austin's plate, like for
the level of player, which he is, which is good. He is very good player, full stop, but not elite.
And I feel like they've been asking a lot of elite from him, like as an offensive player.
It didn't go unnoticed for me that on a night where Austin had 14 assists against one turnover,
he only had nine shots. Like, it felt like there was.
more of a balance struck for Austin's duties in this game.
And, you know, some of that was passed along to Rui getting more shots or Max getting more
shots.
Even like Gabe Vincent, Gabe had nine shots in this game, which for him is like, wilt.
It's like Kobe-esque in terms of getting a known offense.
Yeah, this was mama mentality for Gabe Vinci.
At the buffet first tonight, Gabe Vincent.
But like I think that matters.
Like I think that will bring out a better version of Austin.
And, you know, in the second half, I thought Austin defensively was better.
Like, yeah.
And I shouldn't, I shouldn't mention like I'm not, I'm not like encouraging like a situation where the Lakers can't get balance in their offense.
I just don't know if most nights they're going to be able to achieve it.
Again, if Rui is maybe less involved, they're like, you just don't have a lot of natural scoring.
coming off the bench.
And, you know, Max Christie is not a reliable 15-a-night guy.
But he's getting closer.
Actually, in January, he's averaging like 15 points a game.
Right, but I'm just saying, I got to, you know,
you need to become a guy who you can expect to score 12 to 15 points a night.
You've got to score 12 or 15 points in night for like a season before, you know,
he's trending.
He's getting there.
No, I agree.
But if the Laker, you know, the balance is better.
Like, and this is why it's so important.
important that they find ways to get this offense back,
you know, set aside the questions about the defense.
Like, they've got to get more efficiency and structure and movement and stuff out of their
offense because, like you say, if AR doesn't have to do the facilitating and score 25 a night,
he's going to be better at all the other stuff.
It's like they got, if they, I, I don't want to, the defense has to get better than what it was over those,
the games in the losing streak and even at some points in the winning streak.
But man, alive.
The offense has sort of quietly been allowed to erode in ways that are really, really bad,
and it needs to get fixed.
Well, another thing when we were talking about balance and also structure,
and this reflects something we talked about for Wednesday's show,
Anthony Davis led the team in field goal attempts with 21.
And the next closest was LeBron.
and Rui tied with 15.
Like Anthony Davis was in this game, very clearly, the focal point.
And not even necessarily for all the shot attempts, but he was the, if not focal point, focus
point.
Like that's the best version of this offense.
And if you make Anthony Davis the focal point, the focus point, however you want to put it,
and I think it naturally lends itself to more people.
being involved.
And we saw that tonight.
And for all,
Miami is not a great team,
but they have been good defensively this year.
Like I know they didn't have Jimmy Butler,
but they've been good this year as a defense.
And they regularly figure out ways
to play defense no matter who they're missing.
It's just what they do.
Yeah.
So we'll see what happens.
Like there's another game coming up on Friday
against that is the,
the nets.
The Nets.
Oh, God.
Delo.
God.
Curb stomped tonight.
Oh, my God.
Missing a lot of people.
But I mean,
126 to 67.
Right.
Delo didn't play in that game.
Cam Johnson didn't play.
Cam Thomas is hurt.
I think one other guy was missing.
But still.
I mean, I'm looking at the box score right now.
Do you know how many points they got from the starting
five combined? Not many.
I mean, definitionally, they scored 67.
24. They got 24 points from their starting five.
Not getting it done. Locked on Nets is talking about how they need more from those starting
five. I will, but like, you know, the game was tied at 21. Clippers won the second quarter
37 to 14 and went on a 19 to one run to start third. The game was pretty much over.
But anyway, it's Brooklyn.
Then you see Boston next week, but you also get Washington.
So there are a couple opportunities.
And the Clippers on Sunday.
That's going to be a tougher game.
But you have at least a couple opportunities to win a game or two
before they go out on this road trip next week.
