Locked On Lakers - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Lakers - Luka Doncic (14 points, 5 Rebounds, 4 Assists) Makes His LA Debut, Lakers Beat Utah 132-113

Episode Date: February 11, 2025

Ultimately, the game wasn't close enough for fans to get a full view of newly acquired superstar Luka Doncic. Not exactly what they wanted, as they poured into Crypto.com Arena on Monday, but a nice ..."problem" for the Lakers. Final score, 132-113. Doncic, who had a 30 minute cap on his minutes in his first game since Christmas, was only needed for about 23:30. It's obviously too early to make sweeping statements about what the Luka/LeBron James Lakers will look like over time, and after such a big layoff Luka's jumper was (understandably) off... but a few things feel safe to say. First, the Lakers are going to feature some absolutely absurd passing. Both Luka and LeBron are special scorers, but they are otherworldly distributors. For the Lakers to have two guys at that size, capable of creating passing angles virtually nobody in the league can (then often sharing the floor with Austin Reaves, himself a great passer)? It's going to mean a ton of good looks. And the ball movement is contagious, so it should encourage good habits in that respect no matter what floor combos are out there. Moreover, where the Lakers before too often found themselves forcing up horrible shots late in the clock, adding Luka could give them a far better chance to create quality shots throughout all 24 seconds. That certainly was the case on Monday. Players will pass up good shots for great ones. Teams will figure out how they want to defend the Lakers over time—and maybe some of those ideas will work—but the percentage of quality shots the Lakers are able to generate should rise precipitously. And importantly, that should have a positive impact on the defense. Doncic certainly wasn't great in this one, by his lofty standards. There will be far more remarkable games against much better teams between now and the end of this season. (Or even the end of this month.) But it's already clear that this version of the Lakers will produce things from night to night—even on the nights where they kinda suck—that will be tremendous fun for basketball fans, and the energy of these guys together, with the prospect for a highlight reel pass at any moment (and incentive for supporting players to put themselves at the receiving end) will be good for the Lakers. It'll take weeks for Luka, LeBron and the rest of the team, along with the coaching staff, to get deep into the bag of tricks now available to them. It already looks like a roster that could fuel tremendous positive energy if everyone rows in the same direction. Meanwhile, the Lakers, at 32-19, are tied for fourth in the West, with one more game against the Jazz before the All-Star break. They've bought some space to figure things out, as needed. HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Luka makes his debut as the Lakers crush Utah. SEGMENT 2: Wow, that was fun! SEGMENT 3: Things are really, really trending up for LA.  Your favorite podcast now has a newsletter! Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey everyone, welcome to Locked on Lakers for Tuesday. Brian Kaminetsky, Andy Kaminetsky, Luca Donchich makes his Lakers debut, and the Lakers get another win big over Utah. That's next. You are Locked on Lakers. Your daily Los Angeles Lakers podcast, part of the Lockedon Podcast Network, your team every day. Thanks to everybody for making Lockdown Lakers.
Starting point is 00:00:30 First listen to every day Monday through Friday, no matter how or where you get your podcast, this one's always going to be free and never, ever, ever behind pay. wall, especially now. Locked on Lakers on YouTube is where you can go hang out with over 30. We got into 32. Somewhere between 31 and 32,000 subscribers on YouTube. A great community of Lakers fans, very active. They're always leaving comments that we try to use in the show itself. We try to make this thing interactive. So very much appreciate all y'all being there. And to the newcomers, Zadravo, this is a.
Starting point is 00:01:06 It really, really fun time for the Lakers with Luca Donchich now officially on the court. He makes his debut for the Lakers on Monday at the Crypt against the Jazz. Andy, we've been waiting, Andy, for what is it, about a week since the Lakers announced this incredibly stunning trade for, you know, for the actual time when Donchich would make his debut, put on the uniform, get on the floor, get past. that calf injury. So caught up by the Mark Williams trade getting rescinded. You almost forget, oh yeah, Luca Donchich is on this team. Yeah, and we're going to talk about that.
Starting point is 00:01:44 Maybe not today, but certainly this week. The news around Mark Williams, the Hornets exploring, apparently exploring options, according to Sham's at ESPN to dispute the physical. So that saga is not done yet. But the news, obviously, for tonight. Dalton connects just sitting on the bench in a hoodie. No idea where he's going to be any day from now.
Starting point is 00:02:11 This is bizarre. So the news, though, obviously the big event of the evening in the 132-113 win over the jazz at the Crypt on Monday is the debut of Luca Donchage. It was a major event, not just across basketball, certainly across L.A. Every seat in the arena has a 77 jersey put on it. LeBron put one on before the game. You know, full house basically there watching him come out for warm-ups beforehand. A palpable energy inside the arena. And, you know, when he was introduced last, it should be noted.
Starting point is 00:02:54 You got the final introduction. You know, the Lakers fans are clearly excited to see what's coming with this pairing. And just the event of Luca Donchich was everything that the Lakers hoped it would be on the first night. Well, first of all, you can tell that they are very serious about impressing Luca. They want to make sure that he feels welcome and that this is the franchise he wants to play for the rest of his life because they spelled Donchich correctly on the back of the shirts that they gave out to the crowd. because as of late, that is not a given for some of the things the Lakers have done, whether you're talking about Kobe's statue, typos.
Starting point is 00:03:39 It was a little off on those coupe jerseys. Yeah, I mean, like they really dotted the eyes and crossed the T's for Luca. I mean, this has been building up, like you said, for like a week. And, you know, the Lakers are an international global brand. Luca is an international global superstar. He took questions in three different languages after the game tonight, English, Spanish, and Slovenian. And the excitement, you got to go back, honestly, since LeBron arrived. I mean, as big of the trade for AD was, A, you absolutely knew this was coming because LeBron and Clutch and Anthony Davis had spent the entire.
Starting point is 00:04:31 season before that, very publicly agitating for AD to become a Laker. So it was so fait accompli, but also, too, like, with all sincere respect to Anthony Davis, who is an incredible player, he's not at the level of Luca. Like, so this is just, it's, Ropalink, I believe described it as seismic when he was talking about, during the introductory press conference for Luca. Oh, yeah. That's not an understanding. statement man this is you know this is a generational trade you know this sort of thing in different sports this level of trade this quite you know the the the magnitude of a trade like this happens once every you know 15 20 25 years whatever it might be so you know and obviously there is
Starting point is 00:05:25 i mean the the level of speculation and curiosity of what it would look like to put LeBron James and Luca Donchich on the floor together, two of the best passers in the league at any size. And then when you start to factor in how big these guys are and the vision that they have and the capabilities that these guys have as passers, what would it look like to put two of them on the floor at the same time? And then throw in a guy like Austin Reeves, who himself is an excellent pastor.
Starting point is 00:06:01 the Lakers have the potential for a level of ball movement that has not been seen. You know, the guys in the pregame show, you know, worthy and, and, um, Byron Scott. Byron Scott, I think was in studio on, on Monday, talked about it like, and I think they're right. It's like having two Magic Johnson's on the floor. Like, that is essentially what the Lakers have. And you saw it quickly, um, in this game. they just the level of ball movement and the quality of the shot creation. I understand they were playing the Utah Jazz. But, you know, these are guys who have not really even practiced together.
Starting point is 00:06:40 And the Lakers were generating so many good looks, passing up good shots for great shots, sometimes even overpassing to the point. And then there was the thing that I really noticed, Andy, was the ability for, between Luca and LeBron to extend all 24 seconds and still generate a good shot where the Lakers before would get to about 16 and you could start feeling the panic about where is the shot gonna come from?
Starting point is 00:07:13 That's just not gonna be the case. They're going to be able to find a shot through 24 seconds with these guys on the floor. Right. It doesn't feel like 24 seconds are on the verge of elapsing because you haven't been able to figure out what the hell to do during the possession.
Starting point is 00:07:28 it often felt like they were looking for the best possible shot, you know, just whipping the ball around and make sure somebody would either be open or you're creating an open lane from people rotating. Talk about the passing with both Luca and LeBron and the magic-s quality that both of them possesses passers, but also physically. Like, you know, in a lot of ways, they are the two closest players to magic since magic. There was a play. I don't remember if it was in the same.
Starting point is 00:07:58 second quarter, the third quarter, but Luca off a defensive rebound, throws a hit ahead to LeBron, streaking down the court, hits him perfectly easy layup. Those are the type of passes that we typically count on from LeBron.
Starting point is 00:08:14 I'm not saying he's never been on the receiving end of one of those as a Laker, but he is certainly not been the recipient as often as he has been the passer. And knowing that that is A, a regular possibility and be something that can take advantage of the way LeBron is still a terror in transition.
Starting point is 00:08:40 And there were other great passes too. There was an incredible whip pass that Luca had cross court to Dorian Finney Smith in the corner, which ended up setting up a basket for Rui. But just that type of pass that, A, you're like, holy, believe. This is where the size. It scrambles a defense. This is, and this is where the size aspect of it is so important is like because those guys are so big and they have a naturally good vision, they're able to go over. We talk about like the vertical threat for, you know, and certainly Jackson Hayes who opened the game with two dunks.
Starting point is 00:09:18 Like he's going to shoot. He opened the third quarter too with with a dunk. Like, dude, Jackson Hays. He's going to shoot about 90% for the rest of the year. Jackson Hayes is loving life. If he takes more than five shots for the rest of the season that are more than a foot and a half away from the rim, I'll be surprised. But the vertical, is this a term vertical passing? Like the ability to see over a defense and throw the ball over and around and across a defense because of their size combined with their vision.
Starting point is 00:09:51 there really isn't an angle that they're not able to make passes with. And that to me is one of the most stunning aspects of putting both of this. If Denver had a second guy like Nicola Yokic, it would be the same kind of thing where there's just so much, it's different to see a guy who's in LeBron's K-6-8, Lucas 6-6,6, make some of these create angles than it is a guy who's 6-2 or 6-3. That's just physics.
Starting point is 00:10:20 Real quick before we go to the break. because you were talking about angles. I wanted just to make sure also, while I remember to point out, a pass Luca made off a drive into the lane, bounce pass kickout to Rui in the corner. That led to a three. Like that was another one of those.
Starting point is 00:10:38 Wait, what did he just do? And we see that all the time from LeBron to have two guys who can make you rewind a play while you're watching, not just because it was, spectacular, but so you could understand what the bleep just went on. Yeah, that's potentially very fun moving.
Starting point is 00:10:59 All right. So more observations about what we saw on Monday and what it might mean for what's to come. Next, Locked on Lakers is brought to you by open phone. Running a small business means you're wearing a lot of hats. And your personal phone becomes your business phone. And before you know, you're juggling customer calls all day and night. Starting point is 00:12:21 Openphone.com slash Lockdown MBA. And if you have existing numbers with another service, open phone will port them over at no extra charge. So Andy, the Lakers moved to 32 and 19 tied for fourth in the Western conference right now between with Houston, who are getting a bit of a slump, their first big slump of the year as we get into the All-Star break. The Lakers play one more game before the break. It is again against the Jazz. So an excellent opportunity to go 33 and 19-19. And so to, you know, and we joke here, but the, the ability to have that cushion to be three or four games out of the playing group really does.
Starting point is 00:13:11 I mean, obviously they stopped Utah on Monday, but not every game is going to be against the jazz. Well, hopefully the next game is because it's against the jazz. Our mom is in town. And she loves the Lakers and it's fun to watch with her. But living in St. Louis, she doesn't get to watch them on a regular basis and certainly doesn't get to watch everything in the NBA. She's also in her 70s and doesn't play in a fantasy. She's seven years old. Watching the game at one point, she said, I've never heard of anybody on this team when talking about Utah.
Starting point is 00:13:48 And another point, I believe when the Lakers were up 30-something, she said, just call it a day. You're not going to win. She's the best. There are no lies. No lies in any of that. But it is important to have the, you know, to potentially be 14 games over 500. By the way, both LeBron and Luca expected to play in that game on Wednesday. That is really a big deal for this team because while we saw some really cool stuff and like the potential and you can see why everybody was so excited to put these two guys together on the same floor.
Starting point is 00:14:28 Yeah, it's going to be a little, you know, the schedule gets really tough after the break. You know, it could be a little clunky, you know, LeBron and D. Wade, I think, whether they start like 9 and 8. 9 and 8 that first year and, you know, went on a big run after that. The ability to feel this thing out without worrying about, you know, are we going to be a 9 or a 10 or seat or whatever is a really nice luxury for the Lakers at this point, especially since I guess they might still be integrating new players. But we'll figure that.
Starting point is 00:15:04 I just love this win streak that they're on, the confidence that they're playing with, independent of having Luca on the team. This is one of the things that jumped out of me in a really good way, watching the dynamic with these new guys. And you have to figure out how to create that synergy between, you know, in particular, LeBron, Luca, and Austin, the three primary guys handling the ball, you could see that there are things to figure out, but it never looked awkward out there.
Starting point is 00:15:36 And like it never felt overly self-conscious of either your turn, my turn. Oh, no, no, no, I want to defer to you too much. You know, no, no, no, no, it's your turn. Like everybody is going so far out of their way not to step on each other's toes. was that you kind of step on each other's toes through inaction and through passiveness. And it just, it felt like everybody was just out there playing and, you know, focused. But at the same time, accepting like there's going to be some mistakes. There's going to be rust from Luca.
Starting point is 00:16:13 You know, he's five of 14 from the field. Like you can, you can tell that Christmas. Right. You could tell that he had missed 22 straight games. Like in terms of just supernova Luca, this was. not it. No, his shot was rusty. You could tell you know, he was he was over at the bench getting a little bit of water like three minutes into the game. Well, you know, that's why Dallas had to get rid of him, man, you know. Dudes out of shit. It takes a bit. Toby needs water, man. It, it, but like, I agree with you. I mean, Austin and particularly early was was was very aggressive. I, I think what, you know, as long as they're winning and and, you know, what makes this work, I think,
Starting point is 00:16:54 sort of philosophically, you do have three guys who kind of see the game in the same way in terms of what is the right way to do it, what is the wrong. You know, Reeves does not expect to be treated like a star. He doesn't expect to have 22 shots a game. He'll take it on the nights, you know, like it was over the weekend where the Lakers need it from him. He score 45 points. He's got that in him. But, you know, he is a team guy. I don't think there's any question. about that. LeBron, who is, in my opinion, the greatest player who ever played is still, he's 40 years old and I think is stoked at the opportunity to have a guy who can legitimately carry some weight for him and make it so he can be LeBron James in the springtime. I got the
Starting point is 00:17:47 impression, Andy, that LeBron was a little bit resigned to the idea that he might not play significant basketball again, what he considers to be significant basketball. I don't know if that, I feel like he's revitalized in that way now. I don't know if he was resigned to the idea of it not happening just because the Lakers had been playing very well of late. What I do agree with, though, is he definitely didn't think it was a given and that he thought if it's going to, if it's going to happen, we are going to have to work our asses off and play in a way like he's talked about that allows very little margin for error, very little margin for injury, very little margin for
Starting point is 00:18:31 I'm effing 40 years old in season 22 and I can't always be superhuman. That's the part. It becomes exponentially easier now for him. I think that's it's not that, you know, Anthony Davis was, it is, a just spectacular, all NBA quality player first ballot hall of famer. But he doesn't take some of the burden away from LeBron in the same way that Luke is going to. Like, Luca can replicate what LeBron does in ways that Anthony Davis simply couldn't.
Starting point is 00:19:05 Or Austin Reeves, you know, as much as LeBron had started to defer him. This is what the Lakers were trying to make happen with Russell Westbrook, except Russ made no sense. I mean, Russ is in a lot of ways. I mean, I want to be respectful to Russ. Like Russell Westbrook, he's obviously past his prime now, although he's been pretty good in Denver. But Russ has been a hell of a player over his career. And in certain ways, he has been kind of a poor man's LeBron,
Starting point is 00:19:36 which I want to make sure I make clear, that is not a slight. Like, poor Le Mans, LeBron is really goddamn good player. but there are certain things that Russ, especially at this stage of his career, did not do well enough and was guaranteed as we tried to warn the organization when the rumors were coming out, there's too much clunkiness to overcome. Luca is like LeBron without the clunkiness. Yeah, I agree. And like, you know, he also feels like, and from talking people, like, he's a high usage. player. He's a ball dominant guy. I'm not trying to pretend Luca is something, but he is also somebody who loves to pass the ball, who distributes, who, you know, all these other things.
Starting point is 00:20:25 In addition to being a tremendous scorer, he comes to L.A. with a huge level of respect for LeBron. LeBron sees Luca arrive and, you know, what is it? You know, he picked him three times in a row in the All-Star game or choosing teams. LeBron wants to, you loves the idea of playing with Luca. It's not going to be perfect, but, you know, the amount of stuff that they're going to be able to start stacking up again, as long as they're winning and the offense looks cool.
Starting point is 00:20:58 Like if you're a Lakers fan at home, I cannot tell you the future of this. Is this going to work? Is it not going to work? Whatever? They're going to win a title? Are they not? Are they going to, you know, are they going to go 500 out?
Starting point is 00:21:08 I don't know. I am 100% certain that when these guys play, there's going to be at least three or four plays a game where you go, damn. And that's as a fan, just as a fan, that is fun to have something you know you're going to tune into every night where it's just going to be really,
Starting point is 00:21:26 really cool. Yeah. And coming up next, we should make sure to talk about the way LeBron went out of his way to ease, not just ease Luca into this debut, but give Luca all of the spotlight and the comfort and the everything. So that we should get into coming up next.
Starting point is 00:21:59 Get to your point here just a second, 80, because it is a really important, but I saw this in the chat from Calvin Gregory. Haven't felt this optimistic since the POW days. And I totally understand why. I mean, the LeBron shows up, Anthony Davis. I'm not debating the part about when, you, Calvin, felt last this optimistic.
Starting point is 00:22:18 But the part that I maybe want to put this up on the screen for people watching on YouTube is there was something similar about Pau's debut with the team where as soon as he was like, Powell's first game with the Lakers, you were like against the nets on the road. You were like, oh my, like this is going to work. Like you could just see how well that pairing between LeBron and I'm sorry, Kobe and too many stars. Kobe and Powell is going to look. You could see Kobe's face that he was like, oh, bleep.
Starting point is 00:22:50 It is on. Like, you know, you could see Kobe was like, I know Powell is really good. I know this is a great idea. I didn't know it would be this quick. Right. And Kobe's a, you know, like LeBron, like Luke of basketball genius. And he, he was excited. You could tell he was excited.
Starting point is 00:23:07 We were there. We covered that team when, you know, talking about the acquisition of power. Kobe was all, you know, he was ready to go. But you could see you, I think you're exactly right, his face when, when they saw it. A quick reminder as well, sign up for the Locked on Lakers newsletter. You see it Lockedond Daily.com there in the bottom of the screen,
Starting point is 00:23:25 again, for people watching on YouTube, have the show and lots of NBA analysis from around the channel delivered to you every day. Again, Lockedond Daily.com. Click on Locked on Lakers and just shows up in your inbox. And make sure to actually click on the email. Like, you have to actually open the email. That would help.
Starting point is 00:23:44 But it's very important. Subscribe first and then get around to opening. You got to walk before you run, but we're really requesting that you run. Like the running is more important than even the walking in terms of the credit that we get. Like we're really, we want to all the way. We get the credit just for the signing up. Yeah. Do both.
Starting point is 00:24:06 Yeah. Run very fast. Anyway, you wanted to talk about LeBron and how he sort of seated the night to Yeah. Luca, it was caught on. It was, it was, this went out viral. LeBron in the pregame huddle told Luca not to fit in, but to fit bleeping out. Like, in other words, he said like be yourself and don't worry about stepping on toes. Don't worry about, you know, fitting into the group dynamic or the part that isn't being spoken. spoken out loud, fitting in in a way that I'm happy with, like in a way that you are pleasing
Starting point is 00:24:50 LeBron, UBU, and Luca revealed after the game, you know, caught a lot of people's attention that in Lawrence Tanner's pregame introduction, Luca got the final call out to the court, which is typically LeBron's time. You know, it was Kobe's time. You know, the unquestioned superstar, that's always who gets called last. Powell, by the way, still got announced before Kobe. Yeah. Kobe was excited to have Powell. What that's crazy.
Starting point is 00:25:23 Come on. Let's keep this thing in perspective. But like, Luca said that LeBron called him, I think it was last night, and just said, what do you want? Your call.
Starting point is 00:25:37 And Luca said, like, I'd like to go last for my debut, just as part of this night that Luca was very, very excited about. Like, after tonight, it's going to go back to LeBron being the last guy introduced. But it's all part of what seemed like a very overt way that LeBron was really trying to make Luca feel, like, welcome. And you don't need to. There have been a lot of talk about how this trade happened without LeBron and Rich Paul and Club. and AD, like nobody knowing anything about it, which is, to be honest,
Starting point is 00:26:16 the Lakers prioritizing getting Luca over LeBron's feelings. And people had wondered, how is LeBron going to take that? Our immediate reaction was, the bronze is going to be fine. He's going to get it. Because they're trading for Luca Donchurch. Right. But also, this is what you do. If you need a trade to not get scuttled,
Starting point is 00:26:33 and it was very important that this not get talked about, even sometimes need to keep LeBron out of the loop. But, I mean, Luca really appreciated that he talked a lot afterwards about how much he appreciated this from LeBron. And, you know, you have that. You have Dirk in the crowd again, everybody wearing the jerseys. I just, I was, you know, the Lakers are really usually, I mean, you mentioned the typos and they had the problem with Kobe statute. But like, broadly speaking, you know, people for people who are, you know, maybe new to following the Lakers on a daily basis. And again, welcome to all of you.
Starting point is 00:27:09 just from Slovenia, but from all over the damn place. Drabbo, Ola. We got a guy on the chat board from Uganda, like clicking in. I don't know what time it is over there, but look that one up. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:22 So I got to look up below. I mean, our friend, Teal Square. But, you know, so it just the- Habari.
Starting point is 00:27:33 I'm coming up with Habari. I don't know. I hope that's wrong. It's the thought that counts. Abari or. Or a hojumbo. Okay. I just,
Starting point is 00:27:45 I love, you know, it is, there's something about like this sort of, you know, the watching him answer questions in three languages that felt so perfect for what the Lakers, you know, you see it with, you know, the Dodgers with, you know, show Hey. And they just like, there's something like, you used to see it with Kobe. Yes, answering in multiple languages. But like the ability, it is, it is not a small thing. I don't know how many people in L.A. speak Slovenian, but a lot of people speak Spanish. We're going to be hearing from a hell of long.
Starting point is 00:28:24 However many there are, we're going to meet all of them. They're going to be coming out of the woodwork. I'll tell you how much. The, the fact that the Lakers have another, and this was, you know, Kobe, it was Powell. It was like to have a Spanish fluent Spanish speaker in a city like Los Angeles is not something that can be overlooked. It is hugely important. It's part of the reason that I think so many people are excited about it.
Starting point is 00:28:53 And it's something I'm not even sure necessarily people realize right away that, oh, by the way, Luke is fluent in Spanish. It's just the fit here seems, I'm not saying it was bad in Dallas. And it was, you know, they did some amazing stuff there. Despite, I guess, Nico's, Nico's feelings about all that. Luca did not want to leave. This, I mean, this was Dallas's ownership and Nico Harrison and what, but like, this was not Luca agitating his way out of Dallas.
Starting point is 00:29:25 And, you know, so the fact that the fit there was, you know, he was, he seemed to love it in Dallas and Dallas clearly loved him. It doesn't change the fact that what we've got here in Ellis. LA for as a landing spot for Luca Donchich has the potential to be spectacular. And, you know, you think about it as not homegrown, but somebody who could be here for a very long time. And look, too, this is the first night. They had a big win over a really bad Utah team.
Starting point is 00:29:55 Like, things are really bad tougher. There will be times where you see Luca look annoyed with LeBron or vice versa on the court. Like it's, it's not always going to feel this magnanimous like LeBron was towards Luca tonight. LeBron was also no doubt hyper aware of everybody analyzing the bleep out of every interaction with Luca. It doesn't mean that what he did wasn't sincere. Both things can be true. Sure. At the same time. But it's not always going to be this seemingly perfect and fun. But I think there's going to be a lot of, there's going to be some stuff that's perfect and a lot of fun.
Starting point is 00:30:37 I do think so again. There's going to be two or three things every night at least where you just go, oh my God, like that was, because we already have that with LeBron. Like even when the Lakers don't play well, LeBron still gives you a pass, a play, a something pretty much every night where you, where you take that away from the game and go, I'm glad I watched because I saw that thing happen. I also think, you know, it's actually really nice.
Starting point is 00:30:59 The Lakers have two games against the Jazz to kind of get their feet. wet with this new arrangement. One of the things that I think kind of kicked off this streak that the Lakers are on was the game they played against Washington. The Wizards are worse than the Jazz. The Jazz are like the Showtime Lakers compared to the Wizards. And the Lakers go into that game off of the terrible loss in Philadelphia, and they play one of their best games of the season, really tightened up everything that
Starting point is 00:31:29 they were doing. and, you know, they were up by like 50 in that game. And it was the Wizards. And so on the one hand, a lot of people were like, whatever, you and I spent the entire show talking about how important it was that they had a game like that, that they could put everything together because you need to do it. And then you can carry it through. And then they beat New York and they beat the Clippers.
Starting point is 00:31:49 And they, you know, it kind of, and they've been rolling ever since. I think it's good that they can have a couple, no disrespect, practice games, potentially. against you. Nothing disrespectful about that at all, Brian. I'm sure they're going to take it in the respectful manner that you intended. In the history of sentences that begin with no disrespect, the streak of they're always disrespectful, it remains intact. But like, you know, you got to take Wednesday's game seriously. But it's another game the Lakers should win. And I expect Utah will put up a better fight on Wednesday. But it's still a very, winnable game against the lesser opponent where you can maybe not be punished for some imperfections in the way that you would if the game was against Oklahoma City. So in the end, it was a really, really fun. Now, I want to make sure we didn't have time and frankly, the story is Luca, but we're going to get into the Hornets calling the league about the Mark Williams trade and the
Starting point is 00:32:54 Lakers failing the physical and Dalton Connect now being caught in the phantom zone or whatever is going on right now. Also want to make sure we talk about Jordan Goodwin, who played really, really well. And a few people pointing out in the chat, Jackson Hayes, as much as we've talked about, the Lakers need more help at center, more depth at center. And there are legitimate reasons to question whether or not Jackson Hayes can truly be the starting center of a contending team. He's been playing really well later.
Starting point is 00:33:29 I was actually, there was a guy, and I forget who it is in the in the comment section for the show for Monday, who was filleting me and my Jackson Hayes takes. I actually want to respond to those because I do think at this point it is worth reframing the question around Hayes because it's not about his play. It's something else. And so we'll get to that over the course of this week. week and, you know, obviously through the end of the All-Star break, we'll have a little more time to break all this stuff down. Lockdown Lakers on YouTube is where we can go hang out with over 32,000, nearly 32,000 subscribers to the channel. Appreciate everybody jumping on for this show live.
