Locked On Lakers - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Lakers - Luka Dončić Scores 51, Austin Reaves 30 as Lakers Cruise Past Bulls, 142-130

Episode Date: March 13, 2026

The Lakers have now won 7 of 8, and occupy the third seed in the Western Conference after beating Chicago at Crypto.com Arena, final score 142-130.  This was a night where the Lakers locked down peri...odically on defense -- those were the moments where they put some space between themselves and Chicago -- but were rock stars on the other end, led by Luka Dončić. LA's MVP candidate was cooking all night, finishing with a smooth 51 points on 17-31 shooting, including 9-14 from downtown. Austin Reaves added 30 points of his own. Deandre Ayton? How about 23/10. Rui Hachimura, starting for the injured Marcus Smart had 15. LeBron James, questionable heading into the game, played and finished with 18 points, with seven boards and seven dimes.  And it's a good thing the starters were so hot, because the bench gave the Lakers five points. Five.  No matter. The Lakers keep things rolling and get the win they needed. On to Denver Saturday.    HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky  SEGMENT 1: Holy Luka!  SEGMENT 2: Ayton helps set a tone.  SEGMENT 3: Denver on Saturday.    Everydayer ClubIf you never miss an episode, it’s time to make it official. You're part of making the Lockdown Podcast Network, the number one sports podcast network in this or any other universe. Brian Komenetsky, Andy Kaminetsky. We've covered the Lakers for nearly 20 years with ESPN, the LA Times, and the athletic. Lots to talk about following the Lakers win over Chicago cruise to a relatively easy. easy. 142-130, the final score there. LeBron James back in the lineup, we'll talk about his play, Andy, and how he kind of slotted in with his return to the big three of something.
Starting point is 00:01:17 JJ Redick spent a little time on. We'll get into DeAndre Aiton. We'll get into a lot of things. But I think we need to start, Andy, with 51 points and a near triple double, one assist away, for Luca Donchich. Yeah, and by the way, because I've already seen one comment about this in our show, in the short that I did summarizing the game, I don't know what happened. I just had a brain cramp. I said that Luca was one rebound, one assist shy.
Starting point is 00:01:43 He was, in fact, just one assist shy, not trying to take anything away from Luca. I even acknowledged the three steals on a block and they only had one turnover. Honest mistake, but just off the bat because I know our Slovenian friends, Zadravo, to all of you, y'all keep track. It was an honest mistake.
Starting point is 00:02:00 Apology. Luca had a really, really good game. want to make sure everyone knows I acknowledge it all. It was statistically impressive in every way. It was hyper-efficient, 17 of 31 from the floor, 9 of 14 from the three-point range, made it to the line nine times, made eight of those. He had 10 rebounds. He had nine assists.
Starting point is 00:02:26 He only had one turnover. Yes. Lakers overall. Yes, I said that in the short. That was the part I got right. Lakers took very good care of the ball. only nine turnovers as a team. Luca had three steals.
Starting point is 00:02:38 He was a plus 15 on the night, Andy. This was as complete and offensive game as he has played since putting on the Lakers uniform about halfway through last year. And when he is doing this kind of stuff, there's really not much opposing defenses can do about it. Speaking of the scoring that he's been doing since he put on the Lakers' uniform, form. Excuse me. A couple stats from the Lakers with one of these zillion threes he hit tonight.
Starting point is 00:03:12 He passed Austin Reeves for the most amount of threes in a single season, putting him second on the list with 201 now. I don't know if that's the complete is when the Lakers put it out. He is behind DeAngelo Russell, the 23, 24 season. Dilo has 226 threes in that season the most in any single season. for Lakers franchise history. At this point, it feels like Luca is going to pass that running
Starting point is 00:03:40 away. Also, per the Lakers, with his 40th 40-point night of his career, this was the 13th as a Laker. He is already ninth in franchise history. He's been
Starting point is 00:03:56 with this franchise for basically a year and change. Some of that year, by the way, I call it the off-season. He's not even playing games during that year, and he is already ninth in franchise history for 40-point games. Yauza.
Starting point is 00:04:15 You look at Luca over seven now March games, six of which are Lakers victories, 49% from the floor, 37% from three. He's averaging nine rebounds, over seven assists. He's averaging nearly a block a game. He's averaging two steals a game. Luca is averaging 32 points a game.
Starting point is 00:04:36 You put all that together, Andy, and you get a guy, and it's funny. He is, I think, kind of dropped out of the MVP conversation. You just don't hear people talking about him much. I don't think that's necessarily fair, given the numbers he's putting up. I think it was indicative. To be honest, Lucas spent most of this season pretty high in it. Sure. The period where he was dropping out, I think, had more to do.
Starting point is 00:05:03 with the overall Lakers malaise. Right. And that's where I was going with it. The malaise, for all the malaise, the Lakers will wake up Friday morning and, you know, head into, I don't even look at the schedule, but, you know, probably head into Saturday's game at home against Denver as the three seed in the West. Like, for all the malaise, like he is right, you know, he has the Lakers right there to be a top four seed.
Starting point is 00:05:33 So not all malaises are created equal, Andy. Do we want to let people know that today's episode is brought to you by Five Hour Energy. Have your cake and drink it, too. Starting point is 00:05:51 Luca had some company in terms of prodigious productivity. Basically, if you were a Laker starter in this game, you had a, you did something and productive. Right behind Luca, though, was Austin Reeves, who continues the little heater that he's on right now. He finishes with a very efficient 30 points on 13 of
Starting point is 00:06:15 20 from the floor, 7 assists, and like Luca, taking pretty good care of the ball. Yeah. Across the board, the starters, I mean, they scored 137 of the 142 points, I believe it's the highest total for a starting
Starting point is 00:06:33 five in about 20 years. On one hand, awesome for them. On the other hand, you would prefer, broadly speaking, a little more balanced than a combined five points, five points on two of 12 shooting from Jake LaRavia, Luke Kinnard, Drew Timmy, and Jared Vanderbilt. But it was against the Bulls and the starting five were all very prolific. I'm sure we'll talk about on the course of the show, DeAndre Aiton was fantastic. It really was. Particularly in the first half, his activity was off the chart. He finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds, six on the offensive glass.
Starting point is 00:07:15 In the first half, he created so many second chance opportunities. There were a few offensive rebounds that he was like flying into the action. It's now a few games in a row where we've seen this level of activity, and just whirling dervish from DeAndre Aiton that everybody wants to see, JJ spoke afterwards about... Do you use the expression whirling dervish? Yes, I did. I did use the expression whirling dervish.
Starting point is 00:07:45 Jumping in the wayback machine tonight. Absolutely, man. Whirling DeAndre, man. I don't care. Are there any dervishes that didn't whirl? It seems like... I don't know. I'm not taking us down this rally.
Starting point is 00:07:57 I'm just saying the dervishes are always whirling. I'm curious about that. that. DeAndre Aiden, JJ said his motor afterwards was excellent. I'm not doing this. Can't sucker me into it. Yeah, we'll definitely get into it. It's just like, you know, it would to, because those two guys really were the other, the
Starting point is 00:08:19 catalysts there. And obviously, Lakers trying to get Aiton involved, I think, early. But, you know, and it's, those two things feed on each other. When Aiton is more active, you know, I think the ball. tends to find him. But the flip side is, you know, the ball has to find him. And so, you know, sometimes the ball was finding him because it was clanging off the rim. Right.
Starting point is 00:08:40 But, you know, but he's, he's been putting himself in really good position to finish on screen and rolls. He's been, you know, he was moving and reading well. It looks a lot like it did earlier in the season. You know, when Aiton was at his best, his timing on that kind of stuff was really good. And, you know, tonight, Thursday night, you know, against the Bulls, he played 37 minutes because no Jackson Hayes, no Maxi Claibah, both of those guys on the sideline. No, Mark is smart as well. Right.
Starting point is 00:09:12 We'll talk about Marcus also, too, in this game because I feel like his absence was, and also in a lot of ways, his value to this team was really demonstrated in this game. I am concerned officially about Jackson Hayes' back because he was listed. as probable on Wednesday and then went from probable to out and they're getting imaging on his back, that's not good. Nope. Even for the youngsters, lower back problems are not, nothing to trifle with. So it's really important that Aiton gave them good minutes because he was really, for all intensive purposes, the only center available, no disrespect to Drew Timmy.
Starting point is 00:09:56 And so, you know, this was like the Minnesota game where they needed good minutes from him to counter the size of Rudy Gobert, like the Knicks game where they needed that energy against Carl Anthony Towns. The Lakers asked of D'Andre Aiton to go out there and do both the little things. In this case, some of the bigger things, too. I'm sure he appreciates the opportunity to score, but, you know, really brought the energy. I want to talk about Reeves after the break, and in talking about Reeves, that gets you into the conversation about how LeBron played returning to the floor. He went the other way from Jackson Hayes went from questionable to available. So that was nice to see. We'll tell you what that dynamic looked like next.

Starting point is 00:13:39 to get your first month for free. So before we get to the whole dynamic with LeBron and Austin Reeves in this game with all three of the big three back in the lineup, you'd start to talk about Marcus Smart and his impact, he did not play in this game. And I think from a defensive consistency standpoint, the difference was certainly
Starting point is 00:14:06 it was noticeable. Well, JJ, after listing all the things that he liked in this game, and he pointed out several elements, several players, he concluded by saying that he wished there was something he could say positive about the defense, but he wasn't going to be able to. And you noticed in this game, and I'm sure to some degree, this is recognizing you're playing the Bulls, and that just organically lowers the intensity.
Starting point is 00:14:39 But as we talked about heading into this game, we were hoping that wouldn't be the case just because the Lakers have a tough string of games coming up beginning Saturday against Denver. They have just started to really develop some really good habits, and you want to see them maintained with as much consistency and purpose as possible. and to use a team like the Bulls as a lab for just more work, more reps that really did not happen
Starting point is 00:15:08 the night. I think that is a byproduct of Marcus Smart not being there, in part just because of what he brings to the defense just as a player. But also, tonight was really a reminder of just how much Marcus Smart raises this team's urgency over the course of 48 minutes. Like I think more than anybody else, there's a baseline when Marcus is out there and just, you know, he plays a fair amount of minutes and just his general presence, I think, raises the collective urgency in ways that is not always counted on when he isn't there. Well, there's playing hard and then there's playing Marcus Smart hard. And those are not the same. Attention to details, things like that. Sure.
Starting point is 00:15:55 But I mean, I'm just, you know, in terms of what you were just talking about there, you know, the difference in energy and activity and intensity on that side of the floor, you know, like you say, beyond the technically good defense that he plays, there are all those other things he adds. Like, I think the Lakers played, I don't know, seven minutes of decent defense in this game, eight minutes. they played it at the beginning of the game when they built out
Starting point is 00:16:27 I think it was a quick 11-nothing lead whatever it was and then they used it they really leaned into it in the third quarter for the first five six minutes of the third quarter where they extended the lead out you know deep into double digits and that's sort of
Starting point is 00:16:43 they held on to that for the rest of the game there was no point you know after the you know four or five minute mark in the third where you thought there was even a small chance the Lakers were going to lose that game. But the Lakers definitely did not carry the same level of defensive intensity, of attention to detail that they did against Minnesota or New York or even some of the lesser
Starting point is 00:17:11 opponents that they had been beating to that point, you know, New Orleans or something like that. That was not this. This was a getter done kind of, you know, put the defensive intensity in where it's needed. And then once we have a lead, we know we can keep it. You could see that's, and that's that, to be fair to them, is how about 95% of the league, the good teams in league,
Starting point is 00:17:38 handle games like this. But like you say, in a perfect world, you would have seen that kind of continuing execution like we have. I mean, if nothing else, you could maybe just put Chicago away earlier and then more guys get to rest. more guys get wrapped. Absolutely. And I mean, Chicago had 72 points in the paint, 24 fast break points. They had 18 points off turnovers. The Lakers only turned the ball over 10 times, meaning they scored on damn near every possession. They turned the Lakers over. Like, again, I don't
Starting point is 00:18:11 want to make too big a thing out of it. They won the game by double digits. If they return back to form against Denver and then the two games against Houston and yada yada, then fine, whatever. It's worth pointing out because if for no other reason then we raise this as something to watch for heading into this game yeah and so um the the other big thing i think that uh people will focus on and i think this is going to be the the conversation tomorrow into the weekend going to saturday and so it was there was a definite shift in the dynamic with the big three where you felt a tangible effort to make sure that the ball spent most of the time with Luca and with Austin. And LeBron, some of this might be a function of the injury, but JJ Redick talked about,
Starting point is 00:19:07 whether we get to it before the break or after, we'll certainly read a couple of his quotes. J.J. talked about, like, the kind of what we saw and talking about it with LeBron of doing what's required to win and understanding how much it matters for Luca and Austin to be at their best, they need to have the ball. And so I don't know if it was that kind of conversation. I don't know if it was coming back from injury or the fact they were playing the bulls. He didn't have to put out max effort.
Starting point is 00:19:42 You use that against the other teams. Whatever it was, it seemed to me pretty clear that LeBron took a step back in terms of ball handling, initiation, aggressiveness as a score, and let Austin and Luca have more space. Well, certainly in the first half, if nothing else. And some of that was, honestly, LeBron looked rusty and kind of out of rhythm in that first half.
Starting point is 00:20:07 He had, I think, believe three assists and three turnovers. He, I think, was like 0 of 5 or 0,4, something like that to start out. And just looked kind of out of rhythm. And to be honest, I was thinking to myself, like, please, LeBron, pick it up in the second half just because I don't want the narratives to just start writing themselves in overdrive. And he played a much better, like a much more effective, particularly in the third quarter, second half. So like all, like the second half, LeBron was much more of a contributor, like particularly right off the jump in the third quarter.
Starting point is 00:20:44 He had a tomahawk dunk, then like a steel, deflection steel that he saved that turned into a. basket like he had a couple really big throwdowns like he he looked oh yeah i'm not trying to say and we'll talk about after the break i'm not i'm not trying to say it didn't contribute it's the how it's sure i'm just trying to add context to it sure it's with that and i think the context is really what matters here it's the how it's the finishing plays it's you know cuts into the lane that he finishes it's it's plays in transition yeah um so we'll talk after the break let's we'll we'll stay on this um because if this is the beginning of a trend, what does that mean for how the Lakers operate down the stretch?
Starting point is 00:21:26 Talk about it next. Lakers is brought to you by five-hour energy drink. Welcome to the five-hour energy flavor draft. We're looking at every aspect of the draft to let you know which tasty flavors are the best, which ones might be sleepers, the board set, the flavor's ready. Only one can take the top spot. Five-hour energy has a wide variety of flavors, something for everyone, plus the zero sugar boost.
Starting point is 00:21:54 Flavor I'm taking? Peach mango. It's got a ripe peach flavor right on the first sip. The mango adds a tropical depth, some sweetness. It's a really balanced blend. You could add a little lime to it.
Starting point is 00:22:05 A little Frank Ocean vibe. Mango peaches and lime. Sweet life. I'm also watching, though, because sleepers matter. They're important in a draft. Watermelon and blue raspberry. But peach mango, that is my first round draftee.

Starting point is 00:23:49 We made note, Andy, at different times about how the, you know, it is always funny to talk about like stars playing off ball. Like, what does that mean? You know, it often generally just means like this one possession, I didn't have the ball. No, I used to, I used to say all the time we were covering Kobe, Kobe defined this any moment that I did not have the ball. I'm playing off ball. Like even at the times where like Kobe was posting, gave up the ball to very clearly get a repost, that was Kobe playing off ball.
Starting point is 00:24:32 I remember where, when they acquired Ramon Sessions. And it was like, okay, this is going to be when Kobe plays off ball. And we all talked about it. And even I think Kobe kind of mentioned like that. Oh, Kobe talked us up.
Starting point is 00:24:42 Yeah. Nope. Nope. I'm taking it back, Ramon. Sorry. Go stand in the corner where you're like a 25% three point shooter. You're a good player.
Starting point is 00:24:51 Not from the corners. he was not. No, he was not. No. Bander built the end in in that sense, but a good player. And so, you know, LeBron, though, legitimately playing off ball. Like you said, there were moments in this game where he was cutting and, you know, and it finishes on dunks and gets a pass moving down the lane and all that kind of stuff. Like LeBron legitimately, as an off ball player, is a massive threat because he reads the floor as Luca and Austin and Reddick have all said, like a supercomputer. He sees everything. He understands what's going to happen two or three moves before it does. And so he, over the course of his career, has been very difficult
Starting point is 00:25:34 to guard with most defenses training all their eyes onto him when they're not because they're looking at Luca. They're looking at Austin. And you have the ability to move LeBron around the floor and let him try to score on the move against defenses that can't just key on him, whatever it is. It makes him a more effective player and passer and all that. Meanwhile, it does, you know, it has the effect of boosting the usage for Luca and Austin. I'm sure you saw the Rick Carlisle comment. I think it was Rick.
Starting point is 00:26:12 Was it Rick Carlisle? No, I'm sorry, it was Chris Finch. after the Minnesota game, just talking about, as you said, the sort of the simplicity and the usage of Luca and Austin when they're together and how difficult that is to defend,
Starting point is 00:26:28 this doesn't get in the way of it if this is kind of the style that they can replicate going forward. Yeah, I think JJ in talking about this afterwards, A, he was praising LeBron a lot for the media had. And also, I think the praise was sincere. I also think there was a certain amount of diplomacy going on in the way he was talking about this, in part because I think it is still an evolving dynamic. And JJ said, like, LeBron is not
Starting point is 00:26:57 going to be fourth in field goal attempts as a regular thing. Like, you can set your watching the rest of the season. Like, you know, he might be more often, say, third than second or first, but like fourth or maybe even fifth isn't necessarily what JJ is envisioning. But what he also said was, again, this is where I think some of the diplomacy comes in. LeBron, I'm paraphrasing a bit, but LeBron understands the importance of making sure that Luca and Austin can be at their best, the importance of them getting a baseline amount of on-ball reps, which is part of them being at their best. And frankly, just where the two of them are in terms of age, mileage, broadly speaking direction of the franchise, I think possession by possession effectiveness, like all of that stuff, none of which means LeBron can't contribute.
Starting point is 00:28:00 But it does mean that I think it has to be addressed is what I'm saying. Right. But I think he was, I mean, there was diplomacy there was diplomacy. and all that stuff. But like he's trying to reinforce the thing that I think would they feel is the ideal way to do it. Because like you say, LeBron isn't going to finish fourth in field goal attempts most games.
Starting point is 00:28:26 But that doesn't, but there's, you know, those field goal attempts can come in a lot of different ways. They do not have to come with him starting the possession, you know, with the ball, you know,
Starting point is 00:28:38 and all that stuff. And so I think what JJ is doing, there is really trying to reinforce the style that he thinks works best because, you know, they need to find a sort of, I don't want to say a hierarchy because that's the wrong way of putting it, but a, it is though. I mean, that's not like, people think of hierarchies as like, who's going to get the most shots, who's going to get the most, like, it's, so I guess, you know, but like my point, but like, it's an approach to who is going to have the ball.
Starting point is 00:29:14 So it's not a your turn, my turn type of offense. I understand that. But again, this is sort of what I'm talking about with diplomacy, because to some degree, that's a packing order. Like, you know, we remember when Kobe, I mean, I've never heard. It's an amazing Kobe quote. And just only Kobe would be this blunt and audacious.
Starting point is 00:29:37 But one time he just said, I eat first, POW eat second, everybody else can basically fight for food. And that is a much less diplomatic version of what JJ was essentially saying there. Like in order for this team to function best, those guys need more on-ball reps. I think that's true. I mean, that's what I'm talking about there. And the reason diplomacy is required is you don't want it to sound like you're either throwing shade at LeBron or trying to dismiss what he can still bring or anything that sounds derogatory towards who LeBron is as a player and what he's meant to basketball because, I mean, there's no reason JJ would want to do that.
Starting point is 00:30:23 But there is a certain amount of diplomacy required. Like this, we've talked about it all season. There is a certain awkward dance with all of it. Right. And it doesn't mean anybody's doing anything wrong, including by. the way, LeBron. And this is right. There is an awkwardness to it.
Starting point is 00:30:39 Sure. It has been all year. If this is a style that they can replicate, and again, a lot of minutes with LeBron on the floor with, you know, just the supporting cast, with just, you know, bench players, like those types of things, which explains why they lost a lot of those minutes because, as we mentioned, five points for the bench. You know, they're going to still be able to find minutes. for LeBron to be, you know, the primary ball hander, primary player.
Starting point is 00:31:11 And even if it's just LeBron and one of the other two on the floor, that still works. I just, I think this notion of LeBron moving around and moving off ball and catching on the move and all that kind of stuff is a fun wrinkle that he could take 15 shots a game, 12, 14, 15, get to the foul line, all that kind of something. and be easier for him to draw fouls, moving off ball and away from the ball, moving in transition and all that kind of stuff. It just, it worked really well. Austin, too, is on, you know, a bit of a heater over the last three games. And I think, you know, LeBron is smart enough to see that and, and, you know, kind of get out of the way.
Starting point is 00:31:58 I mean, LeBron actually set himself up really well with some deep seal baskets where he just ended up getting fed around the rim. Like if you, you can get the ball to LeBron right around the rim, like it's over. Like you're the hardest thing. Yeah, the hardest thing he's going to get to do is dribble.
Starting point is 00:32:13 The hardest way for LeBron to create offense for himself is to face up to a defender who's looking at him, you know, with other defenders in help position and ready to go and try to beat guys off the dribble. That is the least efficient, most difficult way for LeBron to try to create offense. And so, it's good for them if they don't.
Starting point is 00:32:36 So plenty more to talk about as the Lakers get ready for Denver on Saturday. That is obviously a really big game in the standings and a really big game for kind of continuing to carry this good feeling. It would be three good teams in a row that they've beaten if the Lakers can pull that one off on Saturday.
