Locked On Lakers - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Lakers - Luka Donċić's 16th Technical Foul Rescinded by the NBA. He'll Play Vs. Detroit
Episode Date: March 23, 2026It seemed like a possibility, and Sunday it came through -- the NBA has rescinded the technical foul it called on Luka Dončić in Saturday's game in Orlando. It would have been Luka's 16th, and force...d his suspension for Monday's game in Detroit. Now he can play, and it gives the Lakers a solid advantage against a Pistons team that won't have Cade Cunningham, or one of his backups in Marcus Sasser. The Lakers will be potentially shorthanded as well, with both Rui Hachimura and Marcus Smart added to the injury list as questionable, joining Maxi Kleber, who has been upgraded to questionable. Still with all three of their stars and a nine game win streak, the Lakers have a much better shot at this game than it would have seemed 10 days ago. And with a couple more victories, the Lakers will have a shot to truly craft their lead up to the postseason. Meanwhile, LeBron doesn't know ABBA, and the Lakers benefitted from a favorable last two minute report. These things do even out over a season. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Luka can play! SEGMENT 2: A nice two minute report for LA. SEGMENT 3: An opportunity knocks. Luca Donchage's 16th technical is rescinded.
He's available to play Monday in Detroit,
while the Lakers have a huge opportunity to keep putting pressure on the rest of the West.
That is next.
You are Locked on Lakers.
Your daily Los Angeles Lakers podcast, part of the Locked on Podcasts network,
your team every day.
Thanks, everybody for joining Lockdown Lakers.
I'm Brian Komeneski with Andy Kemenacki.
Lots to cover today as the Lodon.
Lakers start a fresh week with a nine-game winning streak.
They've got the rest of the road trip to look forward to.
Starting Monday night in Detroit, we'll catch up on everything that is going to happen in this one
in terms of who's available, who's not.
We'll also let you know more signs that the Lakers chemistry is really coming together
in a significant way.
I want to tell you first, though, that Fandul is a sponsor of today's show.
During the tournament, Fandual is offering 300.
$100 back in bonus bets every day for 10 days.
Head to fandole.com to get started.
So the news of the day, Andy, is logistics in terms of technicals, and it is injuries.
We'll start with the big news.
No 16th technical.
The NBA rescinds the double T's on both Goga Batazza and Luca Donchich from Saturday's game,
meaning Luca is once again available to play, hanging on 15 technicals, a status that
has served him and the Lakers quite well.
Yeah. I mean, you and I both said in our postgame reactions show to the win over the magic,
like at the risk of sounding like complete homers, this is not a situation between him and
Goga Batazi. I mean, they are refuting each other's version of what was said, who crossed the
line, who crossed the line first, how much of a line was crossed, whatever. Like, which
Language it was crossed in.
Exactly.
Like, you know, what was said about each family member and how and all of that stuff.
And both may be telling some version of the truth.
One may be lying.
One may not be lying.
They may both have heard what they think they heard from the other one.
And therefore they both think they're telling the truth.
To some degree, I don't care about any of that.
Because to be totally honest, I don't think this rose to the level of text to begin with.
They were talking to each other.
I realized that from the pool report, they were apparently given warnings,
but the warnings were not big enough that anybody else seemed to notice.
And bottom line is it's players jawing at each other.
It's Luca not directing any ire towards the referees or fans
or getting demonstrative in ways that show up anybody.
And this, beyond the context,
of it being the 16th, which obviously does matter.
And I do think the referees have to be conscious of that
when they make these sort of technicals.
It just didn't feel like it was warranted in the first place.
So I'm glad both of the texts are rescinded.
Everybody moves on.
Yeah, I mean, I would not have been surprised
if they kept him just because, you know,
letter of the law, you know, this is the sort of thing
that you will see get teed up.
And, you know, I, in theory, I don't believe you should, you know,
let the 16th technical thing impact it or whatever.
But in practice, I think you probably should.
And so, you know, I look at this as fair.
Like there was no physical confrontation.
There was no, there's nothing here that the NBA is doing that's sort of, in any way,
sort of obviously cooking the books or something like that for the Lakers.
It wasn't an egregious type thing where he got up, you know, like you said,
there have been plenty of T's that Luca.
And you and I.
And many instances where he probably deserved teas that he didn't get.
So had you and I had the NBA not rescinded it, I would not have considered it a miscarriage of justice,
but I do think this is the better outcome, not just for Lakers fans, but in terms of kind of like,
all right, what are we doing here?
Well, and just so it's clear, you and I have spent this season saying Luca needs to knock it off.
Luca needs to stop complaining as much.
It affects not just his tech count and potential suspensions.
It actually affects his play.
And we've both said that this string where the string of games where he's had to be on his best behavior and most muted when it comes to the referees,
we don't think it's a coincidence that it is the best string of basketball games he's played
as a Laker.
Like these are related events.
It helps the whole team avoid tech.
So I raise this just so listeners and viewers understand this is not Brian and I going to bat for Luca all season,
saying that this reputation is unearned and people are exaggerating the amount that he complains or the amount he goes at the rest.
It's like, no, they're not.
And he does get a fair amount of leeway, but not all either techs are created equally or
trash.
Not all situations are created equally.
This is a situation where the tech was not warranted, even though you are correct.
There are other times when Luke has gotten so much leeway, he's avoided already being suspended,
say, twice by now.
So it evens out.
And I do think the refs at this point,
going to and the league is going to let the lakers and luca know like this is your one get out of
jail free card there will not i don't know maybe they will maybe they won't i i i think it's in the
16th tech man yeah i mean i mean they might make that clear and he might pick up his 16th tech
monday you know and that's my point you know and so i mean all of this stuff i mean i don't i don't
know if the league i don't think the league the league doesn't by the way for people who are looking they don't
explain these sorts of things.
They just sort of say it's been rescinded.
Like that's that's that's the extent of the of the conversation.
And so, you know, is that kind of implied like, all right, this one might have been a bit like,
you know, hey, don't don't, you know, the next one probably won't be, you won't be treated
this way.
Maybe it is.
Maybe it isn't.
And I just, I think the, you know, if he is going to do it, you know,
the Lakers do have three games in a row or it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.
You know, it's funny.
Like the Detroit game is the marquee one, even without Cade,
just because of where Detroit is and the standings and where the Lakers,
what the Lakers are doing.
The three most important games, we'll talk about it over the course of the week,
three most important games the Lakers have coming up,
but the ones, you know, Indiana, Brooklyn, Washington.
you know, for reasons that we'll get into in terms of the standings.
Other things to talk through in this,
the Lakers are potentially going to be without Rui Hachamura
and Marcus Smart, both of them are listed as questionable.
That would create an interesting scenario in the starting lineup
of both of those guys are out because Rui has typically started
for Marcus Smart when he's been out.
And, you know, presumably it would, you know,
you'd probably drop Jake Laravia or somebody back in
who has been a starter with these teams
wouldn't totally shock me if it was a canard
or something like that.
But for a team that's been short on bench,
punch, losing both of those guys
would make a difference.
The Pistons, in addition to being without Cade Cunningham,
will also be without Marcus Sasser,
who has lit up the Lakers before.
And it's a pretty good guard.
It doesn't get a ton of playing time with this team
because I've got a lot of players,
but he's a good player.
And then Isaiah Stewart is unlikely to play correct as well, Andy.
Yeah, he is out.
The last update I saw was on the 17th of March that said he was going to be re-evaluated in a week.
I want to say for either a calf or a hamstring strain,
I don't remember off the top of my head.
But I do know that the game is played on the 23rd and one week is the 24th.
So Isaiah Stewart doesn't seem to be available, which could lessen the odds of Lucas.
his 16th tech just because Isaiah
Stewart's always in the middle of something. At the very
least, it decreases the odds
of LeBron getting a tech. I was about saying
those guys in history.
In this case, I'm less concerned
about Luca. That would be LeBron.
With Rue really quick,
really quick with Rui
and this, he is questionable
because of a right
calf soreness. And
I think that's interesting, A,
just because Rui missed a couple
weeks in late December, early
January because of a right calf strain. So obviously in and of itself, something to keep an
eye on there and concerns about recurrence and Ruiz had some calf injuries during his time
with the Lakers, calf strains, games missed because of that. So obviously something they want to
monitor. But also, it could theoretically explain Ruiz, the last four minutes, I mean,
excuse me, the last four games, his minutes have steadily decreased.
The first game against Houston played 23 minutes, then 21, the second game against Houston,
18 versus Miami, 15 versus Orlando.
Some of that, I'm sure, is lack of production, although he hasn't gotten a lot of shots.
He's shooting 50% or above from the floor during the times where he's gotten the ball.
He just hasn't gotten it a lot.
But I do wonder if some of his minutes have been.
reduced because they've been aware of him attempting to play through this or something
been lingering and they eventually just decide to give him a game off.
If nothing else, it might explain some of, some of what are not seeing from Rui of late.
Just he's been dealing with that.
And smart Saturday against Orlando hit the deck roughly 200 times during that game.
So it's not surprising.
He abuses himself when he plays.
other things from the interesting talking about sort of things evening out over the course of the season.
The last two-minute report was released by the NBA on Sunday.
It was a mess of a two-minute report that generally speaking, if we're all being honest here,
heavily favored the Lakers.
So we'll talk about that.
We'll talk about the schedule, what I was referencing before.
Plenty more to come up and get to it next.

Welcome to the Five Hour Energy flavor draft with 18 different flavors to choose from,
including new options like confetti, craze, fruity rainbow, or cotton candy.
There's always something for everyone.
The board is set.
The flavors are ready.
I've got my number one pick for the first.
five-hour energy, flavor draft, and it is tropical burst, Andy.
Tasty caffeine, but with island vibes, a delicious combination of pineapple and apricot.
Apricot, one of your more underrated fruits, in my opinion.
Juicy, it's fruit forward.
It's got a little tropical profile with like a little tang to it, and it's bright,
it's sunny, and I like it.
But don't sleep on cotton candy.
Don't sleep on sour apple.
Don't sleep on strawberry watermelon.
Don't sleep on regular watermelon.
They've got all the watermelons covered.
So five hour energy, it gives you the shot.
Five hour energy shots give you the boost you need with zero sugar.
They've got more flavor innovations planned.
So if some reason 18 isn't enough for you, just hang out for a minute.
They're going to be more.
Find your new favorite flavor of five hour energy shots available online at five hour energy.
com or at Amazon.
So a couple other things before we jump back into, you know,
the two minute report and the standings and all these other things.
I learned that on Sunday that LeBron James has never heard dancing queen by Abba.
There's a clip going around of him sort of having to do kind of a name that tune sort of thing.
And it is Dancing Queen.
He had never heard it.
But he kind of thought it was a jam and we'll be adding it to his rotation.
It's weird.
I always assumed he discovered Abba.
In the 70s, I always assumed that LeBron just happened.
happened to be backpacking around Sweden or whatever.
And he saw this local band playing in a Swedish village.
He's like, you know what?
These two gals, these two gents, I like their sound.
Somebody should give them a shot.
And there happened to be a producer right next to LeBron with an earshot.
They're like, hey, this American backpacker, he seems to be on to something.
It is funny, though.
Like, it is a reminder that, like, certain things that you just assume that everybody
has heard or that people have heard of this guy or seen that guy or know who this is.
I would have been to recognize the song.
I think he just didn't know that it was called Dancing Queen or that the band was
Abba.
I could know.
To me, I got the impression he hadn't heard it at all.
But either way.
He's definitely not seen Mamma Mia.
No, he is not.
But they just, it is sometimes, you know, there are people running around L.A.,
like, you know, who don't know who LeBron James is.
Oh, I mean, I've got a few.
We ran into people who didn't know who Kobe was.
You know, didn't know who Shaq was.
Like, not everybody's into this.
I've had a couple friends of mine who are actors.
One of them actually did a commercial with LeBron years, years ago.
It was the one, I don't remember what the product was or whatever,
but it was the one where LeBron is playing a courtroom lawyer,
and he's trying to prove that this guy who is claiming an injury,
he's in a neck brace is faking the injury.
It's actually, by the way, totally cribbing the plot of a Brady Bunch episode.
But I digress.
This is how Mike Brady proved that somebody that he was in a fender bender with was exaggerating his injuries.
But LeBron, to prove that the guy is faking, tosses a basketball over his shoulder and the guy in the neck brace.
My friend, Scott, Kronski, shout out to Scott, gets so excited that he jumps up to catch the ball.
And LeBron says, you know, the defense rest, Your Honor.
he's faking it. And A, my friend actually called me just to get a little more basics about
LeBron other than he knew he played in the NBA. That was it. Also, he said they had to do a
couple takes because the first time LeBron threw that pass, it's scared to live and bleak out of it.
Because like, no, it's, he throws them all hard.
LeBron thinks he's tossing this thing soft to a normal civilian. That thing is flying 100 miles an hour
at his head.
You know, an actor.
I actually told LeBron that years ago, and he thought that was really funny.
And then another friend of both Brian and mine, he years ago did a chunky soup commercial
with an NFL player he had never heard of before.
It was Terrell Davis at the height of Terrell Davis, like arguably best player in the NFL
winning Super Bowls.
He had no clue who he was.
Yep.
So just keep that in mind.
we feel like we have a niche.
It's a big niche, but it's still kind of a niche.
Other things, this last two-minute report, I thought, was fascinating,
only because there was a lot in it.
And almost all of it was favorable to the Lakers.
And the one thing, though, that I was surprised by was the NBA said that the Palo Bancaro
play was not a foul at the end of the game, the one that, you know, all of us thought
LeBron got hacked. Certainly LeBron thought LeBron got hacked. But that one was not among the plays
that was believed to have been missed, presumably I think, because this is the official explanation.
Bancaro makes initial hand-on ball contact legally blocking the shot and initiating the
this logic before any subsequent incidental contact occurs with James during the layup attempt,
meaning the not so incidental contact across LeBron's arm.
Basically, the NBA is saying the ball was blocked before the foul occurred.
And what I thought was kind of interesting about that was just how different sometimes
we see the game as fans, as media, as players, you know, when they say,
versus like the letter of the law with these things.
You know, the law says that's not a foul.
When you're watching it, everybody's just like, that's a foul.
So a lot of the disagreements that people have with the officials, Andy,
I think come down to people are not familiar with the technical interpretations
of the rules of basketball.
And then after that, basically everything that could have helped,
out the Lakers kind of did. That's just...
I mean, a couple of the missed calls were three,
there were two, three second, defensive three second violations on DeAndre Aten
that were not called. Respectfully, those get missed for 48 minutes.
If you called, like, really went letter of the law three seconds,
like, you'd be calling that thing all games. So, like, that one, I'm like,
miss me with it. Like, that just...
That happens constantly.
You need more editing in your last two-minute report.
You don't have to put everything in there.
But now this one was interesting.
They said that the foul on DeAndre Aiton by Tristan DeSilva,
which sent Aiton to the line.
That's when he hit the first one,
tried to miss the second one on purpose.
The Lakers gave the offensive rebound,
didn't end up happening.
But then the magic tried to inbound.
LeBron deflected it. We all know what happened next. It all led to Luke Conard's game-winning
three. They said that that should not have been a foul called against the Silva, and that one
actually could have been pretty big. Yeah. Poor DeAndre Aiton, by the way, can't keep himself
out of these reports. Like, remember, it was it two games ago that they had both of the
the reviewed plays, like the Lakers reviewed a play, and they turned a foul a play that was like
an out of bounds play and it turned into a foul on Aiton and then went to the other end and
it became like another foul on Aden. Poor guy is finding himself in a lot of these reports.
So, yeah, we'll, it's another example of the last two-minute report being kind of an interesting,
unique thing to the NBA. They're the only people who do this.
Honestly, I feel like rather than just last two minutes, they should just do a full 48.
just go through everything that's missed, everything that could have.
Because like, what is anybody really, I mean, I appreciate the transparency,
but I think what upsets fans, certainly coaches, specifically JJ Reddick,
because he has let us know that he calls the league all the time and apparently just gets voicemails.
By the way, it feels so on brand.
Yes.
I mean, just like JJ's calling again.
Jade is calling it.
It's like he is 100% that guy.
Yeah,
he's,
he's Ferris Bueller calling Cameron.
Right.
And Cameron's like,
he'll keep calling and calling me.
And calling,
calling.
But like,
and certainly it brings no solace to fans.
Like what everybody involved,
I think really once from the last two minutes report,
beyond,
again,
transparency and thank you.
It's do better.
Do better with.
the job, it's a very hard job. Like, it's a really, really hard job. I think they should add
a fourth ref. I think there are things they should do to acknowledge the difficulty of this
job, but simply admitting the things that you did wrong in the last two minutes without seemingly
the overall reffing getting better does not bring solace to anybody involved. Yeah, I don't
say this is an unusually messy final two minute.
report. I wonder if they'd be better off just choosing a random two minutes in between like, you
know, the 24th through 26th report, you know. Just the two cleanest minutes they can find.
Well, just the two cleanest minutes. And then they always look great. Yeah. Every report just comes out,
and says, nailed it. So let's talk about what's upcoming for the Lakers, both if the opportunity
that's in front of them now with this Detroit game and an opportunity to really finish this road trip
strong. So we'll get to that next.

So when you look at what's going on here with the Lakers like this Detroit game, you know,
a week and a half ago, even as the Lakers were starting to kind of turn things around,
it was it was profiling as a you know, tough game, top team in the conference near the end of
road trip, all this kind of stuff.
So that obviously changes with Cade out.
The Lakers now have a really good opportunity, fatigued as they might be, to pick up
this 10th win in a row.
And with Indiana followed by, which Godawful team is after Indiana.
Brooklyn.
I think it's, yeah, it's Indiana, Brooklyn, Washington.
Yep.
in Washington, by the way, announced that this, you know,
Trey Young is not going to be playing for a minute.
Like, you know, we don't know.
He's out indefinitely.
Same with AD?
Yeah.
They let those guys.
Well, not, the AD hasn't played, but they let Trey Young get like.
Right.
But they did make an announcement recently that AD, his return remains indefinite.
Right.
Somehow I have a feeling it's going to stay that way.
But you look at these four games and the math.
complications.
They keep high-fiving him.
It's bad at hand.
So the Lakers have a two-and-a-half game lead after Sunday's games on Denver and Houston.
That is functionally a three-and-a-half game lead.
They have a three-game lead, functionally a four-game lead on Minnesota.
If you take three of four in these games or even better to win-off,
for. The math for the Lakers to lose that third seed becomes real tricky. They basically have
to collapse and other teams would have to win out in order to pass them. So assuming the Lakers can
just sort of play 500 ball down the stretch, if they win three out of the next four or four out of
the next five, they're going to have an opportunity to get a little extra rest and really craft the way
that they want to enter the postseason
because they'll have that third seed pretty well locked in.
They will have the play-in week, you know, that four or five days
that those games are having to rest, to practice,
probably practice given what happened last year,
and really give everybody the time off their feet while also,
you know, staying sharp, which is I know something that JJ thinks
that they mishandled last year going in the Minnesota series.
So these games, particularly the games coming up against the three lousy teams,
are as critical as anything that they've done.
You can't you, you undo the work of sweeping Houston if you lose to Indiana.
Like, you know.
Well, if nothing else, the potential for undoing the work.
You mitigate, you mitigate some of the good effects of it.
Right.
By giving a game back.
It'll be interesting.
I mean, down the stretch as far as, because I do think there are guys who definitely could use some rest.
We've talked about how we think Austin beyond the wrist, beyond the hip is dealing with just straight up fatigue.
And he has been playing a lot of minutes during this winning streak.
There's obviously.
And even after being questionable for the game on Saturday, played another 40 minutes.
Right.
And played really well.
But the point is 40 minutes.
And that's a lot.
lot. There's obviously the inherent concerns for LeBron at this stage of his career.
You just mentioned what Rui has been dealing with. Marcus Smart's always banged up.
Luca has had some soft tissue injuries this entire season. So if they can pretty much get that
3C more or less intractable, I don't think they're, like you said, I don't think they're
going to want to take their foot off the gas entirely just to make sure they don't lose any
rhythm, any tempo, chemistry, all that stuff.
There's also a few games coming up down the stretch towards the end of the season
that I think they're going to want to be all hands on deck because they're potentially
information games.
Like they've got two games against the Thunder.
And despite the fact that the Thunder are going to have, I would assume, the one
seed locked up by then, they're just getting Jalen Williams back.
Like they may play some of those games down the story.
stretch more seriously than they otherwise would have, like if everyone had stayed, or Jalen Williams,
if nothing, had stayed healthier all season, because he needs the time with those guys.
And if Jalen Williams plays minutes with Shea sitting and Chet sitting and down, it doesn't
really, I mean, it gets his conditioning back and maybe some of his timing individually, but not as a
collective. So those games might actually be the two Thunder games at the very least in early
April. Those might be ones where the Lakers treat like a playoff game, playoff atmosphere,
because they want, you know, look, this is their opportunity to get some information against
the thunder and vice versa. Yeah, those are the choices that, you know, the teams have to
make. Because sometimes you hide players, sometimes you don't. You might say.
you know, you don't want to, you know, show your hand.
You might say, like, you know what?
We don't want to give the Lakers any information.
So we'll use that game to rest.
Like there's just every team is sort of working through the chess game for what they feel
like will serve them best in the postseason.
Like the one thing that I am very confident in saying is that the Lakers are not
to treat that week off, you know, where you're out of the play in the same way that they did last
year. JJ was very, very critical of himself for how he thought they just didn't keep the team
sharp enough. It made sense intellectually to be like, you know what, we need to get these guys
off of their feet, get everybody healthy, but they may be over indexed. But so, you know, maybe what,
maybe what you do is you give guys a couple days off before the end of the season by having
them miss the Utah game because nobody needs to play or whatever it might be.
And then you build back up in practice.
That kind of stuff will be fun to watch.
And I'm sure JJ will not tip his hand at all.
One more interesting note about JJ before we quit here.
I thought it was instructive that very quickly when Reddick,
down at the podium on Saturday. He made it clear that the, you know, his assistance, in this case
Greg St. Jean, was responsible for drawing up that play at the end of the game. And you and I have
talked about this a lot, you know, what, you know, culture building and all these other things and what good
coaches do. When they do well, they find ways to credit other people. And when things are bad, they find ways to
blame themselves.
And I feel like this was a good example of JJ really recognizing that and being like,
I got to quickly make sure that, you know, we spread some love and shine a light on,
on the assistants because they did good work there.
Yeah, we've talked about before JJ Redick has spent time around Sean McVey, you know,
learning from a coach that's had a lot of success.
And that is one of the hallmarks of Sean McVeigh.
he always gives everybody else credit.
And anytime the Rams don't perform well,
he first and foremost puts it on himself and says,
I got to be better.
Like you can tell when he's really mad at the team,
because once out of every 15 games,
he will basically in so many words say they got to be better.
Like for the most part, like 95% of the time,
it's they did great.
they deserve the credit.
If the team loses, I got to be better.
And I think, at least we may, for the bonus show on Monday,
talk about the growing chemistry and composure of this team.
And I think what JJ did there with St. Jean,
I think can be part of the conversation about the chemistry of this team.
Because the vibes have been extremely good.
during this winning streak, obviously, because the vibes are always good when teams are winning other than when it's Kobe and Shaq together.
They're pretty much always great vibes.
But I think the culture of this team has been something that has grown a lot over the last few weeks.
And I think comments like that from JJ just reflect a team-wide mindset towards playing for each other, being happy for each other's successes.
So that's something to look forward to.
Obviously, we'll be back as well after the game on Monday to break it all down.
