Locked On Lakers - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Lakers - Luka Is Ready to Lead, LeBron Is Excited and Ayton Sees the Opportunity
Episode Date: September 30, 2025Monday was the official start of the 2025-26 Lakers season, as Media Day hit El Segundo. It was a low key, mellow affair, with no drama to speak of, and little news to be made. This is a good thing, ...of course. Luka Dončić came to camp with a new contract in hand, and had very little to say that hadn't been said already. LeBron James put to bed any sense of dissatisfaction, showing serious enthusiasm and excitement for the upcoming season, even while avoiding (no surprise) any firm commitments about what his future holds. Rui Hachimura? No grumbling about starting vs. coming off the bench. Same with Marcus Smart. Deandre Ayton made it clear he fully understands and appreciates the stakes of this season. Will he follow through? We'll see, but early returns are positive. Austin Reaves? Ready to go. Bronny? Happy with his growth, and looking forward to more. Jaxson Hayes put on 20 pounds of muscle, which probably can't hurt. And so on and so forth. If you watched it on TV, you probably learned that JJ Redick has a performance coach. All in all, it was the sort of first day at school the team would have wanted. Something less interesting for us media types is ideal for the organization itself. Hey, everyone, welcome to Lockdown Lakers for Tuesday.
Brian Komeneski, Andy Kemeneske, Luka, Donchich, is ready to lead.
LeBron James is feeling good, and DeAndre Aiton knows the stakes.
That and more from Lakers Media Day next.
You are Locked on Lakers.
Your daily Los Angeles Lakers podcast, part of the Locked on Podcasts Network,
your team every day.
Thanks to everyone for making Lockdown Lakers, your first listen.
of every day Monday through Friday,
no matter how or where you get your podcast.
This is always free.
Never find paywall locked on Lakers on YouTube.
It's where you can go hang out with over 36,000 subscribers to the channel,
Andy, all of whom are celebrating what we are calling,
the first official podcast of the season.
Like, you know, this is the one that started that,
that was recorded after the season officially began,
which happened Monday in El Segundo with Media Day.
And plenty to unpack, but I'll tell you what struck me,
because we're going to talk about Luca Dantzich,
and really the big thing that came out of that was the question of leadership,
talk about LeBron's.
I mean, he was in a great mood, I thought, on Monday.
We're going to talk about DeAndre Aiton and Alex, Jake LaRavia and Austin Reeves.
There's a lot to do over the course of the week.
Did you almost call Jake LaRavia Alex Caruso?
No, I was, I had an Alex.
Because there's not been an Alex on the Lakers for like three years.
I don't know how I got from Alex, but I was getting to Reeves.
You conflated white guys.
I mean,
you conflated white guys.
That is what you did.
Probably, but I.
That is what you did.
I had an Alex who's going with,
I was getting to Austin Reeves and somehow I got to Alex, but.
Yeah, it was Caruso.
It may be the only Alex who's played in the league.
That is a great question.
It is,
that is a for like a relatively common name.
There aren't a lot of Alexes that I can think of.
Well, actually, that's not true.
Alex Len was on the Lakers, but last year.
I'm not sure how much we count.
Was he really on the Lakers last year?
Honestly, I'm looking right now,
I don't want to go too far down this rabbit hole,
but I'm looking at the list from basketball reference.
What comes up immediately is obviously Alex Caruso, Alex English.
I was going to be Alexander and Akeel Walker, but he's an Alexander.
Right.
There's Alex Len.
Someone named Alex Hunnam from or Hanam from the 50s.
Someone named Alex Groza also from the 50s.
Alexis Aninka, who I remember from the 2010s.
That's pretty much it.
That is shocking to me, actually.
The long history of the NBA, there are like four Alexes.
Anyway.
So we get to all that stuff in a second, but I'll tell you what really struck me is just how mellow and low-key this Lakers media day was.
Like it wasn't terribly crowded. First of all, I think the Clippers probably for the first time ever siphoned off a little bit of the media interest because finally their aspirations were met.
Yes, we have stolen the attention away from the Lakers, and it's to see if our owner is going to be suspended.
All it took was a tens of millions of dollars scandal.
Right.
And the Clippers got all to shine.
17-part podcast that's still ongoing, that is slowly revealing.
Nicely done, boys.
Yes.
Well done.
Anyway, so it was just, it was so quite.
Quiet. We've been now to, I don't know, 15, 16 of these things? Like, at least more.
I forget. I was asked today when we started covering, like officially covering the Lakers as opposed to just doing NBA stuff.
And I always forget the year, but it was like 2006, right?
We're 2005-2006 season. The first season of Phil Jackson returned the first of the Kwame Smush years.
Okay. So we're at 20 basically. We've done like 20 of these things.
Yep. And this was the most quiet, mellow of any of them, certainly for a team that didn't flat out suck.
Like there were been a couple seasons where there wasn't that much interest, but the team was so bad that maybe that had something to do.
This is a good team. And it was super chill in that building, which is, if you're the Lakers, fantastic news.
Well, it was chill, but it was also optimistic and excited.
Like there was a lot.
I just, I want to make that clear because the delineation matters.
Sometimes it can be chill because nobody's expecting anything.
So why bother getting your heart pumping for a team that isn't going to do anything?
It's very clear going up and down this roster, and that includes LeBron, and we will get to LeBron,
that everybody believes that at minimum,
this is a team that can be very good.
Nobody talked about it in terms of championships came up,
in particular, Luca mentioned the concept of wanting to win a championship.
That's being the goal.
Rui said that he essentially wanted to win another one for LeBron,
essentially while we know LeBron is still going to be playing in the league.
And that LeBron, in his mind, came back.
You know, wants to win titles.
That's why he's still here.
and still play. But relatively speaking, particularly for an organization like the Lakers, things were
framed through the championship prism relatively little, which you and I have talked about many
times over the years. I often think that's for the best, for, you know, not even about underpromise
over-deliver, but just you can get too myopic when everything becomes about just championship
or nothing else matters. I think it can hurt your process. But it's very good.
clear, everybody up and down this roster is confident that they can be a very good,
very competitive team. And I think that's critical because like this is a process thing.
Like one of the, and we'll get more to LeBron probably in the next segment, but like one of the
things that LeBron talked about was like he finds the process. He's really talking more about
himself, I think in terms of, you know, getting ready for season, meeting the challenges of staying
at the level that he has managed to stay at for over two decades at this point, which,
is staggering. But process, like he loves the process. And some of that that were like he pointed out,
like the Western Conference is bananas. It is a gauntlet, as he described it. And, you know,
the Lakers have work to do before they can put themselves in that group of teams that are like,
you know, like, this is something that if we play to our kids,
capabilities that is hours to control.
We have control over this.
I mean, that's what the Thunder believe.
You know, there are teams like that around the league that believe that and have more
of a stake to believe that than the Lakers do.
And so I think, you know, where they are is that we have something potentially really
good here.
And the goal is to get from where we are to that place.
And that's a process.
And that's a, you know, the first.
40 games of the season, building, or whatever.
But I just, even when they're good, the Lakers often are accompanied with drama.
They're accompanied with controversy.
There is some sort of thing.
So like, I'm glad you pointed out, like, there is optimism, there is excitement.
Like, they were ready to go.
And guys were in a, it seemed like in a great frame of mind.
But when I talk about chill, I mean from that concept of like the standard.
Lakers drama that is just almost baked into the cake.
It was as low-key a thing.
And it was basically all diffused by even like the slight chance.
We talked about it for Monday's show.
Like would LeBron have any sense of apprehension or tension with the organization?
Like the minute he sat down and was just in a great mood, the last teeny tiny, tiny
bit of thing that could have created dramatic headlines gone. I agree with you that LeBron was a big
piece of that. We'll get into more detail about that, including me directly asking LeBron to some
degree about his situation right now and his opinion of the roster. I agree with you that LeBron
was a big piece of this. But also, there are other potential tentacles of drama that could
have been there, whether you're talking about, you know, there was a lot of drama with Luca
leading up to this season and the offseason extinguished only any, any remnants of what could
there be could be there for Luca. But with Austin contract year, with Rui, contract year and the
potential of maybe not starting with DeAndre Aiton, there's the what headspace is he going to
be in? What type of player does he want to be? Does he recognize?
the importance of him, if not meeting the potential everybody thought he had when he's drafted
number one overall, being much closer to that version of it than the version that seemed
to a lot of people, fair or not content to just get paid.
And you asked LeBron.
I asked Aiton directly about that.
Right, right.
You're totally.
So I think there were, and this is a team that has at least half of its players who matter
on contract years.
So there is potential for drama on this team that is more than just about la drama,
which is what everybody, and including you and I, have often focused on.
But we'll get more into LeBron, but I just think it's important to point out, like,
there are a lot of things that could at least in theory on paper trip up this team.
And everybody to a man said the right things that you needed to.
hear from them.
100%.
So we'll get to Luca and his comments.
We get to LeBron.
And over the course of the week, we'll have the ability to unpack a few more of the things
that came out of Media Day.
Of course, the Lakers are playing preseason basketball within a week.
So lots to talk about.
And we will keep breaking down Media Day next.

And it's funny too, and we'll get to Luca here.
Like you talk about Rui, for example, it's like the starting lineup question, this and that.
Marcus Smart wants to start too.
It's like they both obviously want to start.
Ruey, like when asked about it, he didn't say, I want to start, but it was pretty clear in his answer, his preference is to start.
If you ask just about any NBA player, would you prefer to start or come off the bench?
They will say, I want to start unless they are like Uber sixth men or like 37, 38, 39, you know.
Or named Robert Orie.
Right.
Right.
Exactly.
And so Rui, for example, he, it's not.
that he didn't, you know, intimate that he'd rather be a starter. But he said it with the right
understanding of like, I'm here to do what I'm asked to do. And if that start, it's start.
If it's come off the bench, it's come off the bench. There was no headline making anything,
even down further into the rotation. But it was it, you know, it was one of the things that I, that came
up and it you know it was it was noted on Thursday when when rob polinka and j j reddick met the media
certainly came up again today or monday i should say is this notion of lucca as a leader um it's a different
construct than what the lakers got last year where he would just sort of was you know
airmailed into the into the uh into the season in ways that were so totally shocking um like
this is his team and it's his team to lead and he used that language in ways that he hadn't before.
And I think that's really important.
Yeah, he mentioned a few times just feeling way more comfortable with his situation right now.
And, you know, it helped too that on top of the growing comfort with the Lakers, which obviously was shown in different ways, signing an extension like the first morning it was possible, recruiting D'Andre Aiton, recruiting Marcus Smart.
being a part of, you know, I know he wanted to see the back street boys,
but he was a part of a big celebration involving the team and the backstreet boys.
And then also that continued to his time with the Slovenian national team where
there were a lot of reports of teammates saying Luca and his coach,
Luca is being more vocal than he has been in the past.
It's been more vocal in particular on the defense event than he has been in the past.
And I also couldn't help thinking about how the conditioning and for,
what it's worth. It's my first time seeing Luca in person since the evolution of Skinny Luca.
I will confirm with my own tune eyes, dude looks great. Like he looks really, really good. But the
leadership that you would want to see on the court, that can be connected to the conditioning in the
sense that one of the things that is difficult to do over the course of 48 minutes is talk.
like talk regularly on the court, communicate regularly on the court when you're getting winded.
Like that is, it may sound stupid.
No, it's not that I think it sounds stupid.
You're 100% right.
Fatigue is ruins communication.
There's no question.
And Luca actually said one of the big things that he noticed in Slovenia or with Slovenia playing in Eurobasket was he did not feel as fatigued towards the end of games as.
certainly last season, which had its own context of coming off injury,
but I think just in general, you know,
we're seeing Luca see the benefits,
which I think will play a big role in maintaining.
Yeah, I mean, I think that that's probably a factor.
I'm kind of thinking about it.
I mean, I think it's more like he,
he did that in Dallas.
He was a floor leader and, you know,
there are plenty of clips of him, you know,
in huddles and all that kind of stuff, you know,
and all of that.
I mean, I think it's comfort.
I think it's fitness.
I think it's all of that stuff.
But it's an important thing because, you know,
LeBron's voice is obviously still going to matter.
And, you know, Austin Reeves is going to have a voice that matters.
And Gabe Vincent is going to have a voice that matters.
And there are certain guys you can look at and say, you know,
they're going to have some cachet and credibility on this team.
but your best player needs to be a leader.
They don't have to be a screamer or a yeller.
They don't have to be the guy who gives the best quotes in front of the media.
But like this is a problem just to use the example with Kevin Durant.
Like over the last few years, he's sort of been the best player on a team,
but has also seemed to have zero interest in leadership.
And so.
Or in leadership through.
the difficult pieces. Like, yeah, it's very easy or easier, I should say, to lead when things are
going really well. That's how I try to do it. Right. But when things get difficult, I don't look
to Brian for leadership. I head the other way. That's when I get out my blaming finger, Andy,
and I start pointing at people. Yeah, I look for literally anybody else to do it. And you have to
have people that are willing to be uncomfortable. Like, that is something LeBron is willing to go
to uncomfortable places.
Kobe, we covered the last 10 years of Kobe's career.
He damn sure was willing to do it.
You know, Chris Paul, one of the things that has made him a good leader as much as he will,
and the reason he elevates teams, as much as he will often piss off his teammates over
time is he's willing to get uncomfortable.
Luca has specifically mentioned the importance of getting uncomfortable.
And that is also, I think, something that can only happen ironically when you are more
comfortable with your own team.
Yeah.
You can't leave, you can't do what he did in Dallas.
You certainly can't do what he's done on the international level with,
with a team like Slovenia, where you are, I mean, that much better than all of your other teammates.
And find success without leadership.
Like, you can't just be awesome.
You have to be awesome and bring these guys with you and maximize, you know, the talent that you have to have around you.
out how to do that as a leader.
So that was really compelling to hear from Luca, the rest of it.
Like, look, I mean, maybe some of the starch was taken out of Monday's media availability with Luca because he did, in fact, speak to the media not that long ago when he signed the extension in July.
And he went on a media tour.
Right.
And, you know, as somebody noted in the chat, like, there's been no shortage of exposure to Luca over the summer.
So, okay, that's great.
And then you get to, you know, he walks off and he was in a perfectly good mood.
Luca doesn't like doing big media.
He just doesn't.
And so then you sit down and LeBron comes up and like who, you know, I think there are times when he could take it or leave it.
But generally speaking, I think at this point, kind of enjoys the back and forth.
And he just sits down.
He's like, hey, guys.
Like, let's talk.
We're all excited to be here.
And like, you could just see it.
He was in a great, great mood, diffused any potential tension that, you know, maybe some people were looking for.
I wasn't in particular, but, you know, feeling good, excited about the team.
You know, no definitive idea of his future.
But this year, let's go.
When we come back, I want to get into specifically the thing about LeBron, the way he talked about this team, the way he presented it that I really liked.
You and I both said we did not expect any type of drama like capital D drama created by LeBron during Media Day just because A, he would be undercutting his own season.
And B, I don't think at this point right now his relationship with the Lakers, he has the leverage to really do something.
upon creating a mess.
So he would just be kind of hurting himself in the process.
And this is all premised on the idea that he really would want to,
but just, you know, is holding his tongue for some ways.
Right.
And again, neither one of us, we both said,
for as much as we both thought that there has been and maybe even still is,
some tension between him and the franchise.
Once the season began,
LeBron was going to be a pro because LeBron is a pro.
Yeah.
But coming up, I want to get into why.
I think the way that he talked about this stuff actually does matter.
So we'll get into that coming up next.
Lockdown-Lakers is brought to you by Monarch Money.
Most people cannot name all of their financial accounts or even what they're worth,
which is crazy to me, whether it's 401K's properties or investments.
And when you don't have the full picture, you can end up leaving money on the table.
And that's why Monarch Money is there for you.
And all-in-one personal finance tool that brings your entire financial life together in one clean,

And it's overwhelming, but Monarch money can help me streamline my spending,
create more efficiency,
create a plan for the next step. Don't let financial opportunity slip through the cracks.
Use the code locked on NBA at monarchmoney.com in your browser for half off your first year.
That's 50% off your first year at monarchmoney.com with the code locked on NBA.
So we'll save, may probably save a couple things over the course of the week.
DeAndre Aiton, I think, is of all like the things that you leave the
the media day with in terms of like impactful stuff.
I mean, I think D'Andre Aiton is, you know, as much,
is as much a person who influences the ceiling the Lakers have as anyone.
And his media session, I thought was was pretty fascinating.
So we'll get to that if we can today,
but otherwise we'll spend a lot more time on it tomorrow,
make sure it gets the time that it needs.
But Andy, you add one other thing you wanted to get into about
Well, with LeBron specifically, like I said, neither one of us were expecting drama from him,
like true drama.
But just because he wouldn't do that doesn't mean that he had to automatically exude this much
excitement and joyousness and fun and whatever in the way that he presented his thoughts
on this coming season.
He could have said many of the same things, but with much more.
more of just a tone of professionalism and I'm here to do my job. I, this is what I do. I am going to go
out there, give it my best, play the way I'm expected to, and made it much more businesslike.
And in all honesty, that could have been totally appropriate. Like he doesn't need to be doing
verbal cartwheels in order to fulfill his job today. But I think even while saying many of the same
quote unquote right things, it would have come off completely different, even if he wasn't
disturbed, you know, sort of upsetting the apple cart. But the way LeBron went out of his way to talk
about the joy of playing for, you know, this upcoming season, being grateful that he can still
do it, the excitement of it. He was asked a question about newcomers in DeAndre Aiton and Marcus
Smart. And after praising them, he made sure to go out of his way to mention Jake La Ravia and that he
was excited for it, La Ravia could bring to the table and all the different levels of excitement
that he brought up and like a playfulness and a fun to it that really signaled, I'm happy to be here.
And even with all of that, I still had not heard him directly say, I'm happy with the roster.
So I just directly asked him, you know, given the statement with Rich Paul upon your opting in about how you want to play
for championships, evaluating the roster, evaluating your options, you want a certain competitive
level, yada, yada, yada. I was like, it sounds like you feel good about this roster, but is that
the case? You're happy with the way it shaped up. And he said, quote, yeah, I'm excited about getting
to work. I'm excited to see what we can do. And just hearing him directly confirm, I like this
roster. Again, not overselling it, not saying, you know, championship front runners or anything,
but confirming, I like what happened this off season.
I think it's significant.
Also, too, it's like the whole thing is premised a lot of,
a lot of what people are talking about is premised under the idea that they're,
you know, even if LeBron is, he's going to say one thing,
but really mean another.
And there are times today, but like this idea that there would be tension.
And look, it's Lucas team.
And like LeBron, you know, so I saw a couple of people in the comments.
It's like, you know, LeBron still, you know, sucks up a lot of oxygen.
It does.
But like there's also very little that there's, there are no questions right now about
Luca.
There is nothing to settle about Luca.
Like he's not, he's here.
He's signed.
He's happy.
Like that, like there's nothing.
When the game start, we'll start talking about how awesome he is again.
And like, what did he do last night?
What's he going to do tomorrow and all that kind of stuff?
But like in this context, there is no right sort of Luca conversation.
conversation about this, this kinds of stuff.
And so, you know, like with LeBron, though, there's a lot of this, this storyline is premised
with the idea that there is an underlying thing that he's sort of covering up.
You know, I think he has been at this for so long that the idea that there might be sort
of tension with what he wants right away with tension with what.
the Lakers are going to do in the year, two years, three years to come, they're just not quite
on the exact same timeline. And so you're going to have a little bit of tension there.
Neither, by the way, just really quick because it was funny.
LeBron confirmed not only is his timeline with Luca not exactly the same because
Bron is going to turn 41, Lucas 26. His timeline with Bryce James is not the same.
either because he was asked a question in so many words, how much will you plan your future
based around the idea of potentially playing with Bryce James as well.
Bryce is just starting his first year at University of Arizona.
LeBron laughed and was like, no, that is not something that can be planned out.
I don't, my time, maybe it'll work out, but my timeline and Bryce's don't seem easy to line up.
He learned the lesson, too, with Brani.
And if he says, yes, I would love to do that.
Or that's a goal of mine is I want to play with both of my sons in the NBA.
That puts Bryce in a rough spot.
So it's like I think he learned a little bit with the Brani situation.
But I just, I think that people look at this as if the existence of any kind of tension
means that the relationship is imperiled.
And that is, you know, he's been at this for over two decades.
Every year he plays, there is some level of, you know, push and pull.
between the organization he plays for and him.
That has happened basically every year of his career
and it happens with every star player,
with every organization, in every year of their careers.
I was just about to say,
we covered the last 10 years of Kobe's career with the Lakers.
Let me tell you something.
That organization walked on eggshells around Kobe
and for Kobe a lot.
So it's just like, and I, and I just, that part of it was, is one of these things where I've looked at it all summer.
I was like, you don't need zero.
Like right now it feels like there's basically zero tension between the Lakers and Luka.
But make no mistake, Luca, is still exerting pressure and is going to exert pressure on the organization to be good all the time.
because that's what these guys do.
And there's just no mechanism for him to exert pressure now,
nothing that he could deserve for.
And the Lakers have done a pretty good job improving the team
over the course of this offseason.
And so I just, the relationship is good for what it needs now.
And I think if by chance, and I still think if LeBron plays next year,
there's a better chance than not.
that he plays for the Lakers,
that doesn't have to be a horrible,
you know, tension-filled breakup.
Like, it's not because we hate each other.
It just could be because it's time.
I've got one more year.
I want to play in Cleveland, like, whatever it might be.
So I just, I look at this year to kind of take it back to where we started.
Well, again, we'll get to Aiton tomorrow.
I thought Austin said some interesting stuff.
I actually asked him about,
this idea of playing together strengths and weaknesses with Luca and all that stuff.
You know, La Ravia, I thought had a couple interesting comments.
But just to bring it back to where we started, it just, it is a team that feels like it's
in a good space that are starting the year in a good spot.
J.J. Reddick did a great interview with Spectrum Sportsnet on their media.
day coverage and we'll talk about maybe that over the course that we be like he his examinations
of his own work last year it feels like something that he's not angry about or you know resentful of
you know it was very like you know here's where i you know i'm really interested in the process
of getting better myself learning how to do better diagnosing where i was not as strong as i needed to
be for the team and why like
Everybody just felt like they were in a good place.
And no guarantees about where that goes.
But as far as media days go, this one, no complaints, I think.
If you're a member of the Lakers org, I think just about every single right tone was struck.
And again, there's not necessarily.
LeBron was really the one.
I talked about the other.
sort of secondary stories that could be a force of tension.
Who knows, depending on how the season goes,
maybe some of these guys on expiring deals does become more.
If they win, they'll be okay if they don't.
Things will happen.
But, you know, I, Luca was Luca in very good ways.
LeBron was the best version of what you would want from him today.
And then everyone else just top to bottom, again, the confidence that was.
was exuded about what they have in front of them.
And like, how many of them just seem to really recognize,
this could be just a really fun season to be a part of
and just seemed anxious to get to work, man.
And that to me is the thing that I'm looking forward to the most.
Like, again, I don't know, I wouldn't make them title favorites,
but I just, I feel like a team, like the best version of this team,
where you take a quality basketball mind and JJ Reddick
and you give them, you know, two supercomputers,
in in Luca and LeBron, a pretty intelligent third guy in Austin Reeves.
Now you've added a real pick and roll threat.
You've added a real defensive upgrade in the back court.
You've, you know, still got some dudes like Rui and, you know, La Ravia, who I'm very high on.
And there's, it just, it should be a fun.
I have not sold my Vando stock.
Nope.
It is, it should just be a fun team to watch once they kind of,
get their footing.
You know, it could take 10 or 15 games,
but I feel like there's a spot,
but, you know,
quarter of the way through the season,
give or take, where
the next 45 games
should be really cool.
Like, and like this team, when it clicks,
it's going to be fun to watch.
Anyway, plenty more to come about Media Day
and, you know, all the, they're kicking
off practices and all that kind of stuff
starting on Tuesday. So,
