So we'll talk a little bit about Luke Donchich and what sounds like a very fun trip to be invited on Cam Car is really missing out. So we'll get into a little bit of that. That is a form of rookie hazing in and of itself, the fact that he can't go on this trip.

Starting point is 00:01:20 Like, it really sucks for him. He has to go to rookie training camp, mandatory NBA rookie training camp. And he's missing the team bonding trip to Slovenia. Ironically, a lot of what they are teaching Camcar at the rookie symposium is there are things that he has likely already learned because he was raised by an NBA dad and probably knows a lot of this stuff better than some of the more experienced players around the league. So again, there should be a dispensation for children of former NBA players. Or they should offer you the opportunity to test out. You know, like if you go to college and like you've taken enough math, they give you the opportunity to test out. He should be able to test out of the rookie symposium.

Starting point is 00:02:06 100 level rookie rookie 101. Yeah, it's a good idea. I'm sure he is, I mean, and I'm sure his teammates will send them all kinds of photos of how much fun they're having and all that. So other than Camcar, everybody is in good, good shape heading over to Sylvania, so we'll talk about that. And then any remaining time we get into, we'll talk about new developments in the bus family drama and how much that necessarily may or may not, according to some reporting on Wednesday, influenced the speed of the Mark Walter sale to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger, which everybody knows we are rooting in this space for it to happen quickly because that is all that really matters here. So first, though, some actual NBA news and some actual NBA news that Andy affects the Lakers because one of the last remaining dominoes in the league in terms of player movement that everybody's been waiting for, Peyton Watson has finally been jettisoned by the Denver Nuggets.

Starting point is 00:03:13 He's headed into Cleveland as part of what becomes a five-player deal, five, excuse me, five-team deal. but essentially the nuggets are dumping Watson to the Cavs because they don't want to pay them. And they are receiving a first round pick in 2031, a second round pick from the Kings in I think 2032. And the only other player of note that moves in this part of the deal actually doesn't go to Denver. He goes to the Clippers. Max Struz fills a trade exception they picked up earlier in the summer. actually a nice pickup for the clippers if strew stays healthy but this is a big deal in the NBA

Starting point is 00:03:56 and one that significantly weakens i think right now the nuggets yeah Denver by the way this being a five-team deal it actually became an expanded deal off remember last week dennis shrewder getting traded by cleveland to the hornets uh that got expanded and looked in so it's a five-team deal obviously similar to what the Lakers are currently dealing with after trading D'Andre Aiton for Jaden Hardy and two second round picks. The second round picks widely considered the primary motivation for doing this deal. We'll see what Jaden Hardy can do in training camp. But the opening for playing time for Hardy is not obvious at all. This is widely seen about those two picks.

Starting point is 00:04:41 Thus far, the Lakers have not done anything with them. and they are dealing with a potential hole at backup center. We'll see what comes of it. They don't have to fix it today. But along those lines, if they decided to, I would feel better about it. Sure.

Starting point is 00:04:58 I mean, it would be awesome if they did. I'm just saying it's not mandatory that they do. But in the meantime, but it's got some fans wondering if the Lakers messed this up because if they don't do anything, soon enough with those two picks, unless they happen to turn into incredible second round value, they will have created a hole at backup center or weakened that spot for not much an immediate return. The Nuggets are doing this except it is with a player that is, I think,

Starting point is 00:05:33 far more important for both their present and theoretically their future in Peyton Watson. they are a team that has been lacking in athleticism, in youth, in depth, and they just traded a very young, very athletic, rising young player for no human beings in return. Like at least Jaden Hardy arrived to the Lakers,

Starting point is 00:06:00 whether he does something or not. If you needed to play him, he'd be available. He is a professional basketball player, certainly more professional than the not, no, the non-entity that the Nuggets received. Right. And this is to be, I think one of the reasons that Nuggets fans,

Starting point is 00:06:17 we'll get to the how this obviously impacts. Ooh, I listen to the Locked on Nuggets, live cast reaction. Let me tell you something. Matt Moore, Swiper, and Ryan Blackburn, they are pissed. Yeah, as well, they should be. Because, you know, we'll get to the Kaminga aspects of it. I know everybody's just itching, dying on the chat, to talk about Jonathan Kaminga.

Starting point is 00:06:37 And so we'll get to that, you know, probably in the next segment. But like this is a situation where he was traded because the Nuggets don't want to pay the tax. Or they don't, honestly, they don't want to have the threat of paying the tax. You don't pay the tax until the end of the year. And so it's a, they didn't even want to have the risk of needing to do that at a time when I'm not saying Nikoa Yokic is, you know, threatening to leave out the door, all this other stuff. But they, like the Lakers, are with Luca, are at a sensitive point where you want to show a player who has expressed interest, as Yokic has, in staying in Denver for the rest of his career, that you are serious about not wasting his prime. And so they just flat, I mean, Denver, I mean, Cleveland only signed, I'd say only, but like they only signed Watson to a four-year, $88 million deal. And so it's about $22 million.

Starting point is 00:07:39 It's $22 million a year. That's what, I mean, that's not a crazy amount of money for Watson. That is what they let him go over. And Nuggets fans are rightly livid because if you look at this roster now, okay, the starting lineup, Jamal Murray, Nikola Yokic, that's pretty strong. But Aaron Gordon has heard all the time now. Cam Johnson has heard all the time now. Christian Brown is coming off a terrible season.

Starting point is 00:08:07 season. You know, their bench is awful. I, like, this team is severely weakened. I mean, there's talk they're going to go get to Marta Rose and who will help them, so you can still play. But the nuggets are not as good as they were last year at this point. And it is, it's significant, the Western Conference at a sensitive time. We are absolutely right now in Nikola Yokic, in Photoshopped Laker,

Starting point is 00:08:37 Jersey's season. And the entire league now is going to be watching this situation with Yokic. And, you know, he has said that he did not sign an extension this offseason purely out of economic reasons. It's better for him monetarily to wait through this summer. He wants to be a nugget for life, yada, yada, yada, and he has shown no signs of this being just lip service or saying the right thing. Like all indications are he likes Denver. He wants to stay. He doesn't doesn't strike me as somebody that, you know, enjoys the process of moving or whatever. Like, equally, Yolkich, I think all things being equal would like to stay in Denver, but I think he also wants to be part of a competitive team as opposed to one that is increasingly

Starting point is 00:09:21 being built with the idea of Yokic having to carry him. I look at this and the economics of the new CBA are just their drive-along a lot of teams, you know, crazy. But like the second day, there's a big contrast between like the second apron stuff where, you know, or even, you know, when you start getting past first apron, you know, whatever. But like, this is a tax question. This isn't a competitive balance question. This isn't if we go past the second apron, we can't make trades. We can't do this. We can't aggregate players. Like there are real restrictions. This is simply the family of Walmart, you know, own Manchester United in like nine other franchises.

Starting point is 00:10:09 They own the Rams. Yes. Well, I mean, technically speaking, but in the family, yes. Yeah. You know, it's a different owner by title, but the same family money. Like, this is them just saying, we don't want to risk having to pay tax because we don't know if we can trade Cam Johnson halfway through the season. And look, it's $175 million, far be it for me to say Josh Cronky is obligated to spend it.

Starting point is 00:10:42 But even beyond that, like, okay, fine, you got to move someone. You can't move the guys that, you know, Johnson, Brown, Zeke Noggy, like some other players that are taking up space on this roster. And that's the best return you can get on a very reasonable contract offer for Peyton Watson. you can't sign him to that deal and think about flipping Watson later? Like the most creative thing you can do is get a first round pick four years from now. Yeah, I mean, and again, Denver still has time to do something else. Same comp as the Lakers with the Aiton deal. But in the meantime, though, Denver is a team that has been expected to be in that kind of second Western Conference playoff tier.

Starting point is 00:11:31 the Lakers, with Timberwolves, with the rockets, like a tier behind the thunder and the spurs, you know, pick whatever order you want. This is something that could potentially put them at minimum behind the Lakers because they were more or less at the same level last year. And thus far, the nuggets have gotten worse this offseason or they certainly have not gotten any better. The Lakers, it remains to be seen what they're going to look like, but you cannot accuse them of sitting on their hands.

Starting point is 00:12:00 All right, so we'll talk about a little bit more about what's going on in the West and how all of this impacts. Jonathan Kamingo Watch. That's next. I, you know, this is turning out to be a year where the Lakers are fortunate, I think in the timing at the very least for right now, that while I think they did good work over the summer,

Starting point is 00:13:42 you can make an argument. You know, a lot of this is just based around, you know, how much you value LeBron and, you know, versus, say, Kessler and some of the other things that they've done. Guys like Rui and other, you know, Marcus Smart is a big loss compared to last season. So, you know, you could argue that there might be a little bit weaker as a team this year, even though they are structured better to move forward, which I think ultimately was a goal.

Starting point is 00:14:06 but if you're going to slide a little bit, the conference is kind of sliding a little bit with them. And the teams that I think that have the most chance of improving significantly, San Antonio internally was already better than the Lakers. We don't really know what Minnesota is yet and won't know for 30 games into the season. The big movers, I think, are teams like Dallas or Portland or potentially Utah, teams like that that were I think will win in terms of wins versus last season have a chance to make the biggest jump, but we're far enough behind the Lakers that you can't put them in the group of teams that are ready to jump over the Lakers.

Starting point is 00:14:50 So it's a decent year. I don't think it's going to hurt them that much in the standings if the Lakers stay healthy to have maybe taken a tiny step back in absolute talent this offseason. and if you believe that's what they did. We've talked about this before. I think the ceiling for this team might be a little bit lower, but I think the floor is going to be higher, and I think the floor matters a lot. And I think a higher floor may be the difference between,

Starting point is 00:15:22 at the very least, fewer losses where you lose by 20 to 25 points because you're just throwing out these weird lineups that don't really work, and you have too many unbalanced looks. I feel like this group having a higher floor is going to be really important. I think it's going to be really helpful. I have pegged them as a 50-win team. We will see. Obviously, 50 is not as many as 53,

Starting point is 00:15:47 but I also think with fewer teams, both in the conference and around the league, having incentives to not win. And I don't even mean just because of the new rules with, you know, relegation and whatever. I just mean you have more teams that are clearly built looking to win. I think wins could be harder to come by across the league. It wouldn't surprise me if just about every good team finished with a lower win total than last year unless they just stay incredibly healthy. But I do feel, though, like the Lakers, I like this roster. I don't think it's perfect.

Starting point is 00:16:28 I think there's still work to do. but I like it. I think they're going to be good. I think they're going to be like a top six playoff team at minimum. And I, again, compared to a team like Denver, it feels like they've taken more steps forward, or at the very least, more proactive steps in whatever direction, as opposed to Denver just sitting in idle and before moving potentially backwards.

Starting point is 00:16:53 The other thing about the Lakers is I think they are pretty well suited compared to this tier of teams. when you start looking at say Minnesota and Denver most specifically. And then who knows what the clippers are going to be, but certainly Golden State, a team like that. Like the Lakers have a little bit more depth and a little bit more youth than they've had of late. And so I'm not saying they can really, you know, take a long-term injury to Luca and just shake it off or stuff like that

Starting point is 00:17:26 or a long-term injury to Reeves or, you know, all of those things are going to hurt. But if you look at the depth chart, it does look to me a little bit better than what you see in Denver. I just, you know, if you go to ESPN.com and you look at Denver's second string, it's Tyos Jones, Julian Strother, Spencer Jones, who might end up starting. And Marvin Bagley. Like, okay. Like, that's not great. No, even if you add to Martin Rosen, it's not great. And then as far as the Lakers and what this means potentially with hashtag Jonathan,

Starting point is 00:17:59 Within Camingo watch, Peyton Watson getting moved to the Cavaliers takes an option off the board for Cominga. There have been multiple reports that the cab and it makes sense that the Cavaliers have been interested in working out something with Jonathan Cominga. I would not be surprised at all if Peyton Watson was a higher priority. He should be because he's a better player. But with the cavaliers off the board as an option, the already few options, I think, for Cominga, because he's looked very stuck and he looks like he and his agent may have yet. Well, the few options that he has if he wants to be paid $20 million a year. I mean, he seems to want to be paid.

Starting point is 00:18:47 Right. Look, forget the 20 mil. If you start looking at between 10 and 15, it looks like. If Camingo was willing to be paid $45 million or $42 million or $40 million for the next three years, he'd probably be on the Lakers now. Sure, he certainly could be. But I'm just saying forget the pay option. He is starting to run out of options, like just options, period. There's been talk that the bucks could be interested in.

Starting point is 00:19:13 I actually was wondering, you know, maybe could Denver actually be interested in? But it turns out for the time being it's not even an option because they got to get under the second. apron. Like they can't do a sign and trade right now for comminga, even if they wanted to, and I have no idea if they did. I was just spitballing any ideas for comminga at all. This puts the Lakers, if they are interested in comminga, and by all appearances and reports, they are, but they also want to try to control the terms better with commingga because understandably, they seem to have some hesitation about committing too much and too many years and too many terms in his favor, Cleveland being off the board is good for the Lakers right now for this pursuit with

Starting point is 00:20:00 Cominga. It doesn't guarantee that they're going to end up getting Cominga. I still have some reservations about doing it at all. But the more the potential terms and options work in the Lakers' favor, the better it is. Yeah, and it's it becomes the thing with commingas is a two is a two pronged challenge. The first one is can you sign him to it? Can you agree on terms? Can you agree to terms that you're comfortable signing commingat too either because they're not, you know, too high if you're the Lakers?

Starting point is 00:20:34 There's a limit as to what they, they want to pay them, which makes sense. And if you're comminger that you're not just going to sulk the whole time because you're under contract, remember the Lakers have to, they have to. sign him to a three-year deal, not a three-year deal with two player options or anything. It's got to be a three-year deal where the team controls essentially those three years. There can be non-guaranteed deals, whatever, but the team controls those, not the player. And so, Comingo, they don't want a sulky guy who is, you know, upset about the amount is being paid. So, but, and then, so if you can overcome all of those things, you still got to figure out how to do it,

Starting point is 00:21:14 because the Lakers can't just offer them a veterans minimum or sign them into a, and some sort of space or whatever it might be. They don't have any. The only way they can do this is through that sign and trade avenue. At this point, there's just so much that Cominga's agents have allowed to pile up in front of the find a landing spot for Jonathan Camingo. I'm really interested to see, like, as we get closer to the regular season, there are going to be some teams that have to make some roster moves that include cutting players

Starting point is 00:21:49 that are going to have some appeal around the league. And I actually think this, because the Hawks, the Lakers, everybody's got like, there are a lot of teams around the league. Lakers, actually, I don't want of them. A lot of teams around the league, a lot of teams around the league that have too many players. And people are going to be waiting around to see who gets released or who's about to. and then you can make a trade. So, like, Coming is not going to be the number one priority

Starting point is 00:22:16 for every rot team around. Like, there's not some giant war going on to secure his services, particularly at the price that he appears to want. So great work from Jonathan Camingas agents. Just really outstanding stuff. Yeah. In the meantime, though, the regular season will get started

Starting point is 00:22:38 in a month or so. We'll get actual basketball. and the beginning of that process is the team in Slovenia for the mini camp Luca is hosting. Starting point is 00:24:09 Were you invited to Slovenia, Andy? I was not invited to Slovenia. and based on the little bits that we're already hearing about this trip, that sucks, man. Sucks to be not a part of this contingency. It sounds like it's going to be, I mean, before we even get into the benefits of this, and I think also what it says about Luca, just sounds like this trip's going to be pretty badass. Well, it starts with a chartered plane because, you know, if you're going to do this, you're not going to make people, you know, I don't know how many.

Starting point is 00:24:45 direct flights there are from Los Angeles to Slovenia, but there probably aren't that many. So you got a charter people. These are all tall individuals. So, you know, you start with what appears to be a very nice aeroplane. Yes.

Starting point is 00:25:04 And then per Ramona Shelburne on ESPain-L.A. 710. So I thought you're going to use that as an opportunity to show people getting on the plane. Oh, okay. Starting point is 00:25:39 There's Colin Sexton, presumably telling a loved one I will be back from Slovenia in a week. He's on the phone right now. And you got Walker Kessler, a very long-legged Walker Kessler. He really does look seven feet. He's carrying some type of bag. And then again, you got the whole thing getting on the plane. I'm glad I asked you to pull up the photos. Good segment.

Starting point is 00:26:05 Via Ramona Shelburne on ESPena, LA 710. She's got some details. She's heard about what's going to happen, quote. So it starts with Luca chartering a plane for 14 people. On the plane, there's gift bags. and I think when they get to the hotel, there's going to be more gift bags. They're going to Lucas' favorite restaurant.

Starting point is 00:26:22 They're going fishing on Lake Bled. She predicted some golf would be involved. And then she also said there's going to be bonding. It's like five days. That's a long trip to go on with your team. Momo also mentioned, too, I didn't realize this, that Sandra Mamu Kallishvili is going to be joining the team. He is in the country of Georgia, where he's from,

Starting point is 00:26:42 not like Macon or something. He's in the country, and he's going to be. joining, he's going to be joining them having already been in Europe. Again, this sounds like an amazing trip, but I think it's also really important in terms of building degrees of chemistry for a group that has so many new faces and moving parts and a lot to figure out. We talked about the importance of them capitalizing on what is a reasonably soft opening to the schedule. So you really want to try to take advantage of that period with the schedule, but also getting past the idea that you're still learning each other. So the more you can learn each other,

Starting point is 00:27:27 if nothing else, as people, the better. But I think also this is a great sign of, as we are now fully in the Luca Donchich era for the Lakers, Luca taking steps as a leader and a culture setter of this team. There's a very personal nature to this trip that Luke is organizing. He could have done the more traditional Vegas or San Diego or maybe even like Hawaii for this sort of thing. And that would have been awesome in and of itself. But doing this in Slovenia, this is Luca letting in his teammates as to who he is. He's showing them his upbringing. He's showing them a lot that explains who Luca Donchich is and why. And I think these are great steps will make it sound,

Starting point is 00:28:19 I'm sure to some people like he hadn't been doing anything before, and that's not what I mean. I'm just talking about it is truly now the Luca Donchich era with him as the unquestioned first face, first voice of this team. And I think stuff like this is awesome. And just as a side note, like if you've never been, and I've certainly never been to Slovenia, and it's not necessarily, I think,

Starting point is 00:28:44 a place that a lot of people think about going. Like, look up the pictures. Like, it looks spectacular. Like, you know, the pictures of the cabins. It's just a little bit east of Venice, like Venice, Italy. So, you know, to kind of give you an idea of where it is and like what the countryside sort of looks like. But like, it's a lovely looking little country.

Starting point is 00:29:10 And so, but like you said, like there's a certain amount of pride that goes along with being from a place that isn't a place that people have been to. You know, it's different than being from, I think even being from France or being from Spain or some places that guys might have gone to. Even some of these players that, you know, have traveled internationally and nobody, I doubt a lot of them have been to Slovenia before. And so, you know, you really are, like you say, showing off a piece of yourself. And it's good to see the leadership question here from Luca this year. We've made something out of this. And I think it really is a real thing. Like, he needs to take a step up in that department.

Starting point is 00:29:55 That doesn't mean necessarily that he's got to be, you know, dragging people in the media, that he's got to be a really loud voice, that he's got to be, you know, every postgame thing or whatever. lighting people up. Any of that. But like there are different ways to lead, but he has to be a leader. And I think this is a great first step for that process. It's going to be him. It's going to be Reebbs, obviously.

Starting point is 00:30:25 I think this is why they brought Kavanaughn Luni in much more than anything he's going to contribute over 82 games of the regular season. I think it's that voice and consistency as a practice player and experience and all that stuff. But ultimately, it's going to be Luca that shapes the culture of this team. Yeah, you know, there's a comment from WM. Kuchia.

Starting point is 00:30:50 Luca is a generous leader. And that has actually been a very common thing that we've seen from Luca in the relatively short amount of time he's been with the Lakers just a season and a half. He's been very generous with just towards giving. whether you're talking about giving towards teammates, whether you're talking about giving to fans in L.A., whether you're talking about giving to the city,

Starting point is 00:31:14 like in the time of need after the wildfires. I mean, he has shown a very generous nature, and that is a form of leadership to the point you made before. It can't be the only way. Like, you know, there's a big responsibility to being the franchise face for any team, much less the Lakers. But this is a form of leadership.

Starting point is 00:31:40 And it does seem to be a very natural part of Luca's wiring and just sort of how he tends to view interactions and view interpersonal things. Among the things they might want to visit while they're there are the Dragon Bridge. Love on the Butchers Bridge. I'm curious with that is the Slovenian food market. Love on the Butchards Bridge? I got to look, I got to click on that and find out exactly what this lady's talking about. Sounds like it's not safe for work.

Starting point is 00:32:12 Ah, if you've ever been to Runyon Canyon, people do this there too. There's a spot where people put little padlocks that are meant to signify love. This actually, again, happens at Runyon Canyon and Pfegron hiking there in Los Angeles. There's a big fence that people put these padlocks on that means the same thing. but it's on something called Dragon's Bridge or I'm sorry Butcher's Bridge and that is one of the things people do there

Starting point is 00:32:42 there's cathedrals and a great many other things to do and this again the pictures just make me even more jealous that I am not on the Lakers because it sounds, it looks like fun DV to you points out in the chat too Luca paid to restore Kobe's

Starting point is 00:33:01 mural after it was vandalized And like, yes, that you want to talk about it. You want to talk about a great way to ingratiate yourself with the fan base and this city. Restoring a Kobe mural is a very good way to go about doing it. Yeah, for sure. And I think it's sincere as well. It's not kissing up. I think it's no.

Starting point is 00:33:19 I mean, he's, Luca is, you know, obviously he and it's not like he has a history with Kobe or like they were teammates or something like that. But like clearly has a tremendous amount of respect for, for what Kobe did and how he played. And Kobe was a big Luca fan. So all of that, he comes by honestly. And so, you know, this is, we haven't gotten around to it. But like Andy and I want to do a show.

Starting point is 00:33:44 Like there is something to the way that LeBron and the fans of L.A., the relationship that they had or frankly didn't have over the course of his tenure here. And looking at that and looking at Kobe, and looking at magic and looking at the history of stars on this team and kind of using that to speculate what the future of Luca looks like. So that's a show we're going to do at some point. But in the meantime, Andy, we made it through an entire show without talking about ownership drama, which is a nice change.
