Locked On Lakers - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Lakers - Reaves (Career-High 38 Points), LeBron Push Lakers Past Nets, 102-101
Episode Date: January 18, 2025The only thing worse than barely winning one of the ugliest basketball games the Lakers have played in years is barely losing one of the ugliest basketball games the Lakers have played in years. The ...Lakers used 38 points from Austin Reaves (13-23 from the floor) and 29 from LeBron James (plus eight rebounds, seven dimes) to squeak past the Brooklyn Nets at the Crypt, 102-101. On a night where Anthony Davis was unavailable thanks to a flare up of his plantar fasciitis and Dorian Finney-Smith was still away from the team celebrating the birth of his son, it felt like the Lakers might struggle to keep the offense humming. And man, did they ever struggle. The Lakers managed to get enough defense (against a VERY shorthanded Nets team) though it's hard to know how much of that was good defense vs. a bad Brooklyn roster, and even then the Nets still managed to get hot and hit a bunch of timely 3's. So in the end, it's a win that will absolutely not inspire even the slightest amount of confidence, but it's a win. It gets the Lakers to 22-17, and back up to a 6-seed with a game against the Clippers coming up Sunday. Hey, everyone, welcome to a special bonus episode of Locked on Lakers for a Saturday, Brian Komeneski, Andy Komeneski.
The game of basketball is set back decades, but the Lakers do manage a one-point win over Brooklyn on Friday.
That's next.
You are Locked on Lakers.
Your daily Los Angeles Lakers podcast, part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Thanks to everybody for making Lockdown Lakers first listen to every day Monday through Friday and sometimes on Saturdays, no matter how or where you can.
get your podcast. This one's always free, never, ever behind paywall, locked on Lakers on YouTube
is where over 27,000 subscribers are wishing they could get those three hours back. But,
as I like to say, Andy, the only thing worse than narrowly than winning one of the worst
games the Lakers have played in, I don't know, 40 years is losing one of the worst games they've played
in 40s. That was a tremendously.
awful basketball game. But
behind 39
points from, I'm sorry, 38
from Austin Reeves
and 29 from LeBron James,
it was just enough for a 102
101 win over the visiting
Brooklyn Nets.
I really wish
Darwin Ham was still coaching
the Lakers. It's a hell of a team over there.
Just to hear him say,
it's a hell of a ball club they got over there.
A whole ball club.
27 Nets team with no Cam Johnson, no Cam Thomas, and no boy on Bogdanovitch.
Like, these are the moments where you miss, Darwin.
Like, I mean, my Lord, this was an absolutely horrendous basketball game to watch.
I mean, just absolutely the worst thing you would see on your television this or any Friday
night, just miserable.
I mean, it's
it's like his career
high, like I really hope he scores
39 at some point in his career
because I don't want his career high
to be associated with this
bolt leap. I mean,
in all honesty,
like, it's tarnished
in a lot of ways.
It's really
like,
I wanted to put a fork in my eye.
It was just like, I'm obligated to watch these things.
But like, my God, if I-
Like, I almost called David Locke and quit just so I didn't have to watch the fourth quarter of this game.
I played in an extremely deep and competitive fantasy league.
And, you know, dudes there trotting out in this game.
I mean, credit Brooklyn for playing hard.
They just lost by, I think it was it 58 to the Clippers the other night.
I mean, and they played hard.
You know, you've got a lot of guys who are trying to show they can be NBA players.
And all of that, and DeLo comes back and he has a nice game,
although he missed the potential game winner, which would have just been,
I can't even begin to describe the mood of Lakers fans if DeAngelo Russell had hit that game-winning shot.
But he played a nice game, other than that.
I'm not going to lie.
I'm not going to lie.
He deserved to hit the game.
winner more than the Lakers deserve for him to miss it.
I think that's fair.
Yeah.
But he had 19 and 8 with five three-pointers, needed six.
But the, also, too, he wanted that game winner so bad.
Oh, so bad.
Because you may have noticed a score that's 102, 101.
It was not necessary for him to put up a three at all.
One way or another, Dilo was either going to win or lose that game.
Yeah.
And let's see, let's be honest.
Ultimately, Brooklyn is just fine with the results.
Oh, totally.
I mean, employee of the month.
Everybody.
Gets his picture on the wall.
If you want to talk about a guy that's fitting into the culture right away.
Anyway, look, there's not,
Anthony Davis didn't play in this game.
He had a flare up of the planter fascia issue that's been bugging him.
soar before the game. Lakers out of an abundance of caution, as J.J. Reddick called it,
kept him out of the game.
Dorian Finney Smith, still away from the team celebrating the birth of his son.
Both of them are expected to play on Sunday against the clippers, according to Reddick.
The Lakers are going to have to play significantly better than they did in this one.
So look, I mean, you know, Jackson Hayes got hurt.
during the game.
He hurt his shoulder.
He finished the game.
He did.
So he's in and out and his sword
uncomfortable the Lakers are short.
Big men.
Trey Jemison made his debut
in this game.
And I think we got an idea of why
the scouting report is what it is.
Plays hard.
Not super duper skilled.
Very big and strong fellow.
You know, I
if there's anything you take away from this game
and other than sadness
gratitude that it's over
you know just
having your faith in humanity
shaken I
am still very concerned
about the Lakers offense
like they
you know LeBron this is a night where the big two
in this particular case really stepped up.
Lakers got what they needed
from their star players in terms of
point production in terms of
efficiency.
AR was 13 of 23.
LeBron was 12 of 17.
So like that part of it,
they got absolutely got what they needed.
But they only had one
other player in double figures.
I'm sorry, Gabe got there by the end.
So two other players in double figures.
Ruey got to 10.
and Vincent got to 10.
Dalton Connect, 18 minutes, had two points.
He missed all three of his three pointers.
He is, I believe, at about 15% since the hot streak, as we call it.
But the Lakers had 102 points in this game.
67 were from LeBron and Reeves.
They got 35 points from seven other guys combined.
there's there's really just not you know like I I I'm telling you I'm not going back and
chat you know sometimes I mentioned the other day like sometimes you go back and
rewatch a game which I'm not doing that this time I'm not doing that I watched it once
not watching it again but like you know this was a game where you one way or another you need
more than 10 points or you want more than 10 points from ruy who only had 10 shots in the game
You know, the Lakers didn't get a lot of shots put up.
And, you know, Max was 2 of 13.
That didn't help.
2 of 13 from Max Christie.
And then, you know, Vincent gave you the 10 points that ultimately you kind of want from
them or hope you get it.
But like literally that was it from the bench.
Dalton had two points.
They looked from the beginning of this game completely out of sort.
They, I know Brooklyn only scored 101 points, but the Lakers offense, I mean, the Lakers defense in this game.
It's not good.
I mean, the offense was not good either, but like, to some degree, I guess, I mean, I guess you could say to some degree, you write off the bad showing on both ends without Anthony Davis.
He's their best player.
But, I mean, from the minute this game began, the Lakers just looked very out of sorts.
And, you know, Reeves, the career high 38, I believe 15 were in the fourth quarter.
Like, it even took LeBron and Reeves to a while to really get going in a way that felt like,
I don't even want to say the game was controlled because it was too close throughout most of this game to ever truly feel like the Lakers had it under control.
Like, I'm not going to lie.
There was a part of me concerned that they were going to lose this game.
Oh, yeah.
Like, there are times when the Lakers play poorly against a bad team,
but you don't necessarily feel fear as much as you fear or feel aggravation.
This was a game where it was feeling set up for the Lakers to have their perhaps worst loss of the season.
Like, it really felt that way for a lot of it.
I wasn't totally convinced that they won the game.
I waited and counted to 30 before after DeLo missed that shot,
before I was willing to say the game was over and that they won.
I mean, both a competent team, I know Brooklyn was, you know, in 23, 22, 23,
so it looks like the defense is good.
And at times it was.
But, like, I texted you early in the game.
like I think it might have been Jalen Wilson
through one of the
I said well that's the worst Alleyup pass I've ever seen
like they blew up a three on one
by throwing a 98 mile an hour fastball
that was intended to be an alleyup pass
like four minutes later they threw this
actually someone threw an alleyup that was even worse
than that one like a competent team
would have beaten the Lakers tonight
And Brooklyn plays hard, but like they got a bunch of guys with both cams out.
And, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, they, they don't have an NBA caliber roster.
They had 17 turnovers in this game.
I think maybe three were forced by the Lakers.
I mean, it was largely them just doing stuff where you're like, what the F, man.
Like, what are you guys doing?
Yeah.
And just in the, I know Redick talked after the game
just about switching and how it screwed up their team.
And I think, okay, fine.
But I, this is a, this is devolved into a really bad offensive team.
And, you know, that is true when they're at full strength.
You know, you get more of a cushion because you've got Anthony Davis there.
and it's true when they're not.
And if there's a place where I am disappointed in the way the team has sort of evolved under JJ Redick,
it's this because the quality of the offense that they seem to be able to execute,
call it for whatever reason that you want, is low, very low.
And it's gotten worse over time.
where you expect things to get better.
And so, you know, this was an example of, like,
they just, they ran so many possessions where I couldn't,
I don't, I don't know if they were supposed to run action.
What action, if there was, you know, kind of planned freelance,
where I just, I have no idea what they're doing.
And then you get to the personnel question of how much offensive talent do they even have
on this team, especially when AD doesn't play,
which is a second issue.
And again, looking at the trade deadline,
It's not good.
Yeah.
I will give them a bit of grace in the sense that without AD,
you lose so much of, if nothing else, a theoretical anchoring force offensively.
Like, you can't, everything you're looking to run inside out or inside period goes away.
So in that sense, like, however deep they are right now in terms of,
running JJ Reddick's playbook as well as JJ wants,
at least half or more is eliminated without AD being there.
Like in terms of just the options,
what you're going to be looking to do.
Like,
because you can't run anything through Jackson Hayes.
And if you think you can't run anything through Jackson Hayes,
let me introduce you to Trey Jemison.
I mean, like, and I'm not trying to pick on this morning.
Right. And Rui's not somebody that you use as a, no, focal point. And not in that way. You can get the ball down to him and let him do, but he's not somebody you run stuff through because he's not a good passer. He didn't have four in this game, though. You did. And he had that one in the game the other night.
Dude, that was an incredible pass. The lefty passed to LeBron for the three. That was an amazing pass.
But really what I mean by that is it really does reinforce some of the holes.
that they have
sure like the lack of there's not a lot of there's not a lot of secondary scoring here
there's zero secondary playmaking um and and and ball handling you know at the beginning of the
game they were giving austin fits just put a lot of extra ball pressure they just they don't have
a lot of means to personnel wise to to get at some of this stuff um anyway um let us never
speak of this again this horrible horrible basketball game they won they are 22 and 7
