Man, I would have loved to have seen Logan Gilbert get the chance to go the distance in this one.
But, hey, nevertheless, great start for Walter as the Mariners mop up the A's.
My thoughts following the game coming up here on the Locked-on Mariners Post-Game show.
Let's get into it.
You are Locked-on Mariners, your daily Seattle Mariners podcast, part of the Locked-on Podcast Network,

I am your host, Tadang Zalas, Thursday, May 25th, 2023.
And your Seattle Mariners, for the first time this season,
are two games above 500 and a record of 26 and 24,
following a four-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics,
3-2 victory over Oakland tonight at T-Mobile Park to finish things out.
Logan Gilbert, he was brilliant.
We're going to be talking about him.
We're going to be talking about Thai France.
That risk doesn't seem to be much of an issue,
at least as far as tonight goes.
And hey, how about that game?
game time tonight. Two hours flat, 6.40 p.m. Pacific time start and the Mariners take care of business
before the sun even has a chance to fully set in downtown Seattle. Before we get into everything tonight,

Logan Gilbert was magnificent tonight, folks.
Let me tell you.
He did make that mistake in the top of the first, left the curb ball up in the middle,
outside third of the plate to Seth Brown.
Brown did damage with it to run, shot.
over the right field ball makes the two nothing a's early on but from that point forward
gilbert allowed one hit one hit over his last seven innings pitch he finishes his night eight
innings pitch three hits allowed just two earn runs both coming off of that one swing from brown
six strikeouts no walks six hard hit balls allowed on 77 pitches and every
Everything was pretty much ticked up for him from a velocity and spin rate standpoint.
He was 1.4 miles per hour up on his yearly average on his fastball.
0.9 miles per hour up on a slider.
1.3 miles per hour up on his splitter.
Spin rates all up on all of his pitches.
He was feeling really good tonight.
And it showed.
That splitter especially was disgusting tonight.
He threw it 17 times
and induced 11 swings.
Five of those swings
whiffs. Let's see a
45% whiff rate on those 11 swings
for those counting at home.
Overall, 34% call strike plus
whiff rate.
36% on the fastball,
35% on the slider,
29% on the splitter.
We only saw seven curves,
but that generated a 29%
call strike plus whiff rate as well.
Fantastic start for Gilbert.
and it really is a shame that he wasn't able to go the distance in this one,
that he wasn't at least given the chance to.
Like I said at the top of the show,
I would have loved to see that.
I wanted to see that.
We all wanted to see that, right?
We all wanted to see Logan Gilbert go the full nine.
He deserved it.
This was Logan Gilbert's game to finish.
And Scott Service robbed us of that and most importantly robbed Gilbert of that.
And I don't get it.
I frankly, I don't get it.
Look, I know it's a three, two game.
It's a one run game.
It's going to be the fourth time
through the lineup for Gilbert.
But he's at 77 pitches.
And it's the Oakland freaking A's for God's sake.
I mean, if you're not going to do it in that situation,
when are you ever going to do it?
Let him finish the game.
He earned it.
He deserves it.
So I'm bummed out for Gilbert.
but that's really my only gripe with this game overall,
even though that this Mariners' offense only scored three runs
against a bad A's team,
though they did run into the one problem that they've had
in that A's rotation, which is J.P. Sears.
Sears, when he gave up that home run to Ty France in the bottom of the first,
it was only the second earn run he's allowed to the Mariners,
and at that time, 22 and a third inning's pitched in his career against them.
but tonight even though that he only gave up one earn run
I thought the Mariners handled him pretty well
I thought their approach was pretty good
I'll explain in just a moment
but first a reminder of this episode of the lockdown Mariners

Seriously, they taste so amazing.
You won't think they're good for you.

What makes built bars so good?
Well, for starters, they are all covered in 100% real dark chocolate.
That's right.
Real dark chocolate.
And they come in unbelievable flavors like churro, peanut butter, brownie, and cookies and cream.
I'm not sure how Bill does it, but these bars taste like a candy bar while maintaining
amazing macros.
And what's even better is that they are healthy, only 130 calories and 4 grams of sugar
with a whopping 17 grams of protein.

You can thank me later.
And you're listening to the Lockdown Mariners Postgame show.
Thank you for making us your first listen after the Mariners' three to two victory over the Oakland athletics tonight.
Four game sweep for the Mariners.
They're going to be facing the pirates starting tomorrow.
And over the course of the weekend, you can catch all the action on the Marriss hometown broadcast with Sirius XM via the SXM app.
So like I said, I really liked this approach from the Mariners tonight.
They had 10 hard hit balls against Sears.
it really felt like they were going to break through at some point.
They just, they never did.
They were a little bit unlucky.
In 10 hard hit balls, also Sears entered this game averaging a little over a strikeout per nine innings pitch.
Or sorry, a little over a strikeout per inning pitched rather.
He was around like, I think he was around 9, 4, 3 case per 9 entering this game.
He only struck out one Mariners batter, Jared Kelnick, and his second at bat of this game.
So on that front, I thought the, the Mariners,
handled him pretty well.
He only goes five innings pitch on 59 pitches.
Maybe there's more information out there than what I was able to find when I went on
Twitter because all I found were A's fans confused by that as I was.
So I don't know what happened there.
I don't know why Marc Cote, A's manager, made that decision.
But I guess I'm kind of glad they did.
I don't know.
Because again, Sears wasn't particularly good tonight.
the Mariners seem to have figured him out at least a little bit.
They just,
the results ultimately just weren't there,
but the process overall was pretty sound.
But,
you know,
when Trevor May stepped in the game,
that's when things really turned for the Mariners.
Ty France,
who was basically the Mariners' lone source of offense tonight,
hit his second home run of the game off of May,
who was, of course,
the pitcher that hit him on the wrist two-
two nights ago with a 94 and a half mile per hour fastball.
But that wrist, like I said earlier,
didn't appear to be much of an issue tonight.
Ty France was filling,
just like Logan Gilbert tonight,
was feeling pretty good.
He hit two almost identical home runs.
The only difference between the two,
really the exa Velo and the expected batting average.
But listen to the rest of these numbers on Francis,
two home runs.
The first one,
officers in the bottom of the fifth,
or sorry,
in the bottom of the first rather,
105 miles per hour off the bat,
37 degree launch angle,
378 feet into Eggers canteena.
Then his third at bat of the game against Trevor May,
the second home run of the game for him,
99.3 miles per hour off of the bat,
36 degree launch angle,
380 feet to basically the same part of Eggers.
Again, the only difference really,
the exavilo's and then the expected batting
average to 10 expected batting average on the second home run compared to 560 on the first
home run so good night for france uh and then you know like i said he was really the the lone
source of offense for the mariners they ended up getting their game winning run off of a basis loaded
walk kind of a weird bottom of the eighth there uh france popped up infield pop to a shortstop nick allen
who purposely let the ball fall to the ground
to essentially trade out runners at first base
trading out Jose Cabiero for Thai France
and that almost really panned out for the A's
because the next batter up,
Julio Rodriguez doubled into the right center field gap
and if that was Cabierro on first,
it's probably three, two mariners right then and there.
But instead, France, despite how much he'll tell you otherwise,
it's one of the slowest players in the game
and he was held up at third base.
but in the end it didn't matter.
The A's intentionally walked Jared Kellnick, the next batter,
and then decided to go after A. E.
E. Hennio Swarez. I get the process behind that.
Swares obviously has had some strikeout issues,
but their pitcher just couldn't find the strike zone,
and the Mariners get their third and final run of the game
that way in order to win this game.
And, you know, my feelings on how the bottom of the ninth went.
But, yeah,
again, you know, only scored three runs tonight, but, you know, and only had five hits tonight,
but I felt pretty good about what the Mariner's offense did as a whole. Again, just four strikeouts
and 14 hard hit balls. The process there, pretty good. They also walked three times compared to
those four strikeouts. So pretty good night at the plate overall for the M's just didn't see the
results that you would expect from the numbers that I laid out there. I want to finish up on this.
You know, again, the Mariners are going to get a new opponent tomorrow with the pirates, which is
sad because it's been a lot of fun watching the Mariners beat up on this really bad A's team. You can
catch all the action between the Mariners and the pirates on the Sirius XM app. That's the
Mariners hometown broadcast on the SXM app. But for as much,
fun as we're having at the A's expense, objectively speaking, I feel terrible for the A's fan base.
This comes from friend of the show, Joe Doyle. The A's after getting swept by the Mariners tonight
are on pace to finish the season 31 and 131. Now, if that sounds like that would be the worst
record in Major League history, that's because it is. That's because it would be, rather.
the record for most losses in a 162 game season belongs to I believe the 2003 Detroit Tigers
that's what Joe tweeted at Joe Doyle MILB on Twitter
so the A's right now are on pace to clear that by 12 games
this is look I consider myself to be a fan of the game as a whole beyond what's going on
with the Mariner's and so as a base
ball fan. While this is fun to see my favorite team, you know, just have a lot of fun beaten up on
this really bad team over the last four days and over these first seven games against them in
2023, I'm disgusted by what I'm seeing out of the Oakland Athletics. And I'm disgusted with
anyone who has power within that A's organization. They should all be ashamed of themselves.
John Fisher, owner of the A's, you should be ashamed of yourself.
This is embarrassing.
You are spitting in the face of a fan base that is,
look, probably going to lose their baseball team forever to Vegas in a couple of years' time.
You are tarnishing the memories of your franchise.
The lasting memories that you're leaving this fan base with is abhorrent.
you are betraying a community and again spitting in the face of this fan base of the sport of baseball,
frankly,
because of your unwillingness to not even put together a contending team,
but just a competitive team.
This team sucks.
It's garbage.
It's terrible.
You know,
oftentimes when we see a really bad team,
you know, we too easily and lazily throw around terms like glorified minor league team.
This is basically a minor league team.
When that really technically isn't the case most of the time, this is true in this instance.
This is a really bad baseball team.
And for what is likely going to be one of the final A's teams in Oakland history and its history in the city of Oakland, it's a shame.
this is shameful stuff truly and I just my heart breaks for the fans in Oakland especially as someone
that has firsthand experience my team one of my teams being just ripped away from me and there
was nothing I or anyone else who loved them could do about it it sucks and they deserve better
and again, anyone who holds power within that A's organization should be ashamed of themselves.
This is disgusting.
So on that note, that's going to do it for me.
You know, I just, I felt it was important to to talk about that because, you know, as much as I appreciate a, you know, a roster build that mostly focuses on, you know, talent evaluation and development.
over just, you know, spending dollars, this isn't cute.
This isn't moneyball.
This isn't funny.
This is serious stuff.
This is gross behavior from an organization that has all the power in the world to not be this.
You know, maybe they're not going to contend for World Series at this point in time,
but they can certainly be better than this.
This is an embarrassment to the same.
city of Oakland to that organization and to Major League Baseball as a whole.
Overall, though, really fun game for the Marrars, really, well, at least for Logan Gilbert,
and a really fun series overall for the Marers.
And hopefully there's a good confidence boost for them as they head into one of the most
important stretches of their season so far on the rest of this homestand.
Sneakly good team and the Pirates coming to town starting tomorrow again.
You can catch all the action on the Marys hometown broadcast with Series 6.
via the SXM app.
And then the Yankees and Aaron Judge
who's just destroying everything in his path
coming to town right after that.
So this is going to be a tough test
for the M's the next six days,
but we're looking forward to it.
We're going to get you sent for the Pirates Series tomorrow.
We're also going to get Colby's thoughts
on tonight's game.
And we're also going to visit with Kevin Martinez,
SVP of marketing and communications for the mayors.
He's going to give us a behind-the-scenes look
at how the City Connect uniforms were crafted.
And those uniforms, of course,
going to be worn by George Kirby
and the Marries tomorrow night
as they face Mitch Keller
and the Pirates looking forward to that one.
That's going to be a great pitching matchup.
So look forward to that show.
We'll be back in the afternoon.
So keep an eye out for that.
That's going to do it for me, though.
