Harrison Brunick got a taste of the NHL this year and he wasn't ready,
but is he going to be ready for next season?

A bit later on the show, we're going to continue our draft prospect profiles with
Tommy Blyle, a really fun defenseman.
You're not going to want to miss this.
And we're going to get into some news to end the show with Taylor Gaudier,
signing a one-year extension to remain in the Penguins organization,
and why it's time for him to get out of the ECHL,
and he probably is going to get out of the ECHL for next season.
But Pat, starting off today's show, we're continuing our season in review series.
We're just about done, but we're continuing it with Harrison Brinick.
He played nine games in the NHL.
Had some good moments.
His first NHL goal beating Elias Sorokin was really nice.
I like seeing his debut in Madison's Wear Garden with Ben Kendall.
That was a really surreal moment for him.
But as the games went on, Pat, you could tell he was struggling along the boards,
struggling in front of the net.
He just wasn't as good defensively.
and Penguins, they were sitting him a lot.
They were trying to figure out what to do because they had gotten to the nine games.
They didn't want to play him in that 10th game because that would start his ELC.
And they were kind of waiting for him to get back conditioning assignment and then have him go to the World Juniors and then finish off his season and Camloops.
I will say once he got to Camloops for the rest of the season, his play improved tenfold, which I expected him to play better just because he's going up against lesser competition.
it's not the NHL, but I thought his skating was better.
I thought his decision-making was better.
Offensively, you know what you're going to get.
It was very good there.
He then finishes his junior season, goes to Wilkesbury,
and he's the best player on the team in the playoffs, in my opinion.
Look like a completely different player than what we saw
from the beginning of the regular season with the Penguins.
Again, his skating got even better,
which got saying something because I've always really liked his skating,
decision-making.
He got more ratty, especially in front of the net.
His net front defense was improved.
the offense was there as I expected it to be, but still, all aspects of his game improved
after Cam Loops, after Wilkesbury, and it was really nice to see after he got a bit of a welcome
to the NHL moment in some of those games. And I do think the way that he ended the season,
he's going to ride that momentum into the offseason. And I want to see what he can do
with another full camp and preseason because I want him to be on this team full time next season.
The key word when it comes to Harrison Brunich is patience because it's the thing that I'll continue to come back to while we sit in this era of Penguins hockey where they're in this transitional period out of the 20 years of greatness that they were in into whatever comes next is we're going to need to be patient because we want our cookies and we want them now.
and that applies to a lot of the prospects.
But for Harrison Brunich,
as impatient as we are getting and wanting to see him play at the NHL level,
with each passing moment in milestone, quote unquote, milestone
that we've had over the past few years,
he has hit the benchmarks he needs to hit.
He had two training camps ago, he was a big surprise.
Nobody expected him to come in and be that good.
and we wondered on this very show if he would make the team out of camp.
But the organization said, you know what?
Let's be a little patient.
Not yet.
Let's send him back.
We'll see what happens next year.
Encore performance in training camp this past year.
One of the best players in the camp.
They give him the nine game tryout.
It has some good moments, has some negative moments.
But to the developmental point, you see what he needs to work on.
You find out what the weakness.
are in his game.
You tell him what he needs to work on.
He goes back to Cam Loops.
He's the best player there.
He works on all the things he needs to work on.
Does okay in the playoffs with Cam Loops,
but wasn't the best team in the league at that time.
And he's not Superman.
Then he goes to Wilkes-Barre and he is,
at least in the playoffs,
their best player.
He might not have been the best,
but he was damn close.
So he's hitting all of these benchmarks that you want him
to hit developmentally.
So you have to hope that that trend continues into this training camp.
He needs to have a third straight, really strong camp,
build off of what he did with the baby penguins in that Calder Cup playoff one.
And now the next step, if I can be a little more demanding of him,
he has to make the team.
Yeah.
And maybe that doesn't mean he sticks for all 82 games.
maybe there'll be some Wilkes Bear assignments here and there when he trails off because again,
once we get to, he'll be when camp opens, he will be 20.
So still very young.
So if he makes the team has a little bit of a run with the big club, you see some slips and stumbles,
let him go and work on his game in the A.
But at the end of the day, he is hitting the benchmarks he needs to hit as a defensive
prospect.
I agree. And yeah, I wouldn't be too surprised if you saw a little, you know, bumps along the way.
We already saw it obviously this season with his nine game sample in the NHL, but say he's there for longer next season and he still, you know, hit some bumps and bruises along the way.
Okay, you can send him down there for a few games in the A with Kirk McDonald, who very much loves working with him.
Again, like his eyes literally light up when you ask about Harrison Burnick. He loves coaching him, loves working with him.
So I'm sure he'd love it again for next season. Obviously, we want Harris.
and we're going to stick around for the entire season.
But as we always say on here,
development isn't linear.
Like, that's just how it is when it comes to prospects like this.
I think my goal for him next season, Pat,
I'd like for him to potentially be a mainstay on the third pair.
That's if Kyle Dubas doesn't go out there and sign a third pair D for cheap
or trade for someone cheap, something like that.
Again, that's just me.
As of right now, when we're sitting here June 17th,
I'd like for him to be the third pair again.
I don't think they're going to move Chris LaTang fully down there to the third pair.
I understand a lot of people want that.
But I think long term for Brunick, I'd like for him to be the second pair guy.
So I'm kind of looking this in baby steps for next season.
I want him to be that consistent third pair guy if they don't go out there and get another
defenseman.
But longer term, especially because Latang is getting another year older.
So is Eric Carlson.
I want him to be the mainstay on that second pair.
can maybe run power play too,
etc, etc.
That's what I'm looking at for him.
Overall, those are my main thoughts on Harrison Brick.
I'm still really excited about him.
He's had two insane camps in a row.
I'll pet, the first camp that he had,
we were talking about that point,
hey, do you maybe even give him a small little run here
considering how well he was playing the Penguins opted against it?
Comes back the next year.
Does make the original team,
but Fizz is out, wasn't fully ready for the full grind of the 82 game season.
Now, I want that for him.
I want him to be ready for that full grind and hopefully earn that third pair spot.
With that in mind, the one thing I will say, and it's become a trend in the last couple of years with some of the prospects we've had our eyes on who are in the organization,
because we have also been doing draft profiles.
I'm talking about players who already are in the penguin system is there has been a lot of adaptability and willingness to learn.
And Brunick is no exception to that.
because listen to what we talked about when he came near the end of his nine game trial this past year.
Had to get a little bit more physical, had to be better in front of the net,
had to play with a little bit more of an edge.
And what does he go to both Cam Loops and Wokes Bear and work on and eventually get better at?
Net front defense was really solid in the Calder Cup playoffs.
And that obviously isn't the NHL, but it's also a step up from the WHOHL.
So that is an encouraging sign.
And we talked about how he needs to be a little bit better along the walls and with his physicality,
did a lot of that in both junior and Wilkes-Bare.
So along with him continuing to hit these developmental benchmarks,
you see at age 20, he's the kind of player and the kind of person who is not going to balk at criticism.
He's not going to fold under the pressure of,
hey, you didn't make the NHL club.
Here's what you need to work on.
And he takes it as a shot.
He takes it as motivation.
He takes it as if I want to get to this next level,
this is what I have to do.
So I have the same outlook and expectation as you do.
He has to make the team out of camp.
I want to see him get a few weeks with the club at the NHL level to start the season.
ideal world, I would love to see him stick for all 82.
Yes.
Become a solid third pair, maybe even second pair and a pinch contributor.
But if he can get a run of, let's say, 15 to 20 games to start the year,
and you have to send them back, not that big of a deal.
But we also know that a coach like Dan Mews is going to give him runway.
He's not going to bury him at the first sight of trouble.
because Dan Mews in the last year has shown us he knows how to walk the tightrope between
letting a guy work through his problems, but also not letting it become an issue to where
you want a guy out of the lineup.
Now, there were some issues with some players who had been here for a long time and
your only option is realistically to just let them play.
But when it comes to the younger players, he showed he has the ability to let them work
through it and understand when they are working through it and understand when it is time to give
them a break. So I think Brunick is going to get that runway should he make the team. But at the
end of the day, he's got to keep hitting these developmental benchmarks. And if he makes the team out
of camp, I want to see him get a good run and become a solid contributor. Yeah, I sure hope so. And
even outside of the younger players for Dammeuse, it feels like he was doing it with all the
veterans as well. Say, okay, this person made a mistake. I'm going to say,
sending you right back out there for your next ship, whether you're a younger player or a veteran.
I'm not just going to put you on the bench, for example, for the rest of the period, the rest of the
game. I'm not just going to play a forward or a defenseman short. He did do a really good job of
not doing that in his first year, and I expect that to continue heading into his second year as
Penguins head coach. But I'm excited for Harrison Brunick. I hope he makes this team, and I hope that
he is playing a good chunk of minutes next season. Again, at least
on a third pair rule. I don't want to get too far ahead of myself when it comes to
Brunick. But that's going to do it for this first segment. Coming up in the second segment,
it's time to continue our draft prospect profiles with Tommy Blyle, a very fun defense in from the
QMJHL. That's coming up right after this. But before we get to that, we have to tell you all about
a couple of sponsors, one of which is Odo. Running a business should not feel like you're trying to
connect a bunch of systems that were never designed to work together. One app for accounting, another
for inventory, another for sales, and somehow none of them talk to each other. And that's where
Odu comes in. Odo is an all-in-one business management software that brings every part of your
business together in one powerful platform from sales and accounting to inventory and marketing.
Everything works in one place, helping your team move faster, stay organized, and focus on growing
the business instead of managing software. The best organizations know that success is not just about
talent. It's about having everyone work together towards the same goal. And that's true in sports,
just like it is in businesses. Pat and I talked a lot about the Igor Chenekov trade this
week, how everyone in the organization has worked together to really make it so successful.
And we are really excited about that going into the 26-27 season, especially once he
signs that contract extension with the team. Great organizations win because operations matter.
And that's why you should go get Odo. Try for free today at Odu.com slash locked on.
that's O-D-O-O-O-com slash locked-on.
And we're not done.
We still got to tell you all about one more sponsor, which is Indeed.
Workplace chaos can show up fast.
The problem is that finding the right candidate can take a lot more time than most
businesses can afford.
And that's where Indeed's sponsor jobs come in.
Indeed, sponsor jobs help you reach their candidates who actually fit what you're looking
for based on skills, experience, and location.
Finding the right person can make all the difference, whether it's building a business
or building a winning team.
Spend less time searching and more time actually interviewing candidates
who check all of your boxes, less stress, less time, more results.
When you need the right person to cut through the chaos,
this is a job for Indeed's sponsored jobs.

All right, we're back here on the Wednesday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
I'm one of your host, Hunter Hodeys, joined by my co-s, Patrick Camp.
And Pat, let's get into Tommy Blyle.
One of the more fun prospects that I got to watch his tape.
And, man, if you love someone who loves offense but is also good in his own zone,
I think Tommy Blyle is the defenseman for you.
He played for the Moncton Wildcats in the QMJHL this year.
13 goals, 81 points in 63 games.
He was unbelievable.
Also great in the playoffs.
Six goals, 28 points in 21 games.
His season was so good that he won the defenseman of the year award in the QMJHL.
That is how good he is.
And the first thing that jumps out about his game, at least to me, he has a shoot first mentality.
He loves a shoot from the point.
He looks for deflections from his teammates.
however though, when he has time, he can rifle the puck.
I mean, one of my favorite examples of that, he took a pass at the center of the blue line,
skated in a bit.
This was a game against Cape Breton, and he just sniped the puck to give his team a two-one lead.
If you give him time in space, he is going to rifle the puck.
He's also a really good skater.
There was one instance where he corralled a puck in his own zone,
started skating down the left side.
He then gained the offensive zone with such ease, went to his backhand,
and went right around a player and then just roof set for a beautiful goal.
He went right to his forehand at the last second.
Again, he has a lot of speed, a lot of skill, good playmaking ability.
He quarterbacks the power play also really well.
Defensively has an active stick in his own zone.
I like his gap control.
He's going to go to Michigan State in a couple of years,
and I think that's going to be a really good spot for him as he continues to develop his game.
I think there's a good chance he'll be there at 22,
and I think he is a prospect that the penguins would definitely like overall,
just when you look at, again,
skating, his stick handling, his shooting, his compete level, his defensive work.
I think it's all there, in my opinion.
So if he is there at 22, I'd be more than comfortable with the penguins taking him.
We just have to see if he gets there.
And if the penguins value him more than some of the other players that are probably on their board
when they're also at 22.
So those are my main thoughts on Tommy Blyle.
I'm a big fan of him.
man. Maybe I'm buying too much into the, you know, less than 10 days out from the draft hype that
comes with like every player that has a first round grade, but I struggled to find any sort of
negative in Tommy Blyle's game. If I had to nitpick his game, it's that he is a pretty strong
player. He's not the tallest, but he is built. He's just a shade under 200 pounds. So if there was a
little bit of a nitpick that I could have in his game, I would like to see him as a defenseman
be a little bit more physical. I don't need him to be a bruiser. I don't need him to turn into
1990s, Alf Samuelson. But other than that, I mean, you watch the way this kid plays the game and it's
all there. You know, you talked about his.
his willingness to shoot, his willingness to be an offensive defenseman,
the kid can dish the puck too.
He has got some unbelievable vision.
If you go to our pal Jesse Marshall, who hint, hint, nudge,
he might be returning to the show here soon.
But if you go to his long awaited return, Pat.
His long awaited return.
If you go to his substack faceoff factor and watch the mixtape that he put up of Tommy
Blyle, there are moments.
in the defensive zone where it looks like he is in trouble.
That he's not going to be able to get the puck out or he's going to get trapped behind his own net.
And he's either able to make an unbelievable first pass to an option or he's able to use his skating to escape.
So this is a player that I would be a little bit shocked if he remains available at 22.
because all of the tools are there and he's going to like a couple other prospects we have talked
about he is going to a place that is known for churning out solid NHL talent in Michigan State.
So you put in the fact that he is the QMJHL's defenseman of the year.
He's going to Michigan State and he's already playing this well in Moncton.
This is a player that if I'm a front office, a scout,
staff, a general manager.
I want him in my system.
If for no other reason, this is a low risk, high reward kind of pick.
Because if he can mature a little bit and bring a little bit of what he has to the
NHL, he'll be a serviceable defenseman.
Might not be a star.
Might not be the guy you build the franchise around.
but if he can continue to develop and grow,
this is one of those sneaky draft picks
where people will look back if he develops the way he can
and you go, man, they drafted him outside the top 10.
So there is a high ceiling for this kid.
And if he's available at 22,
I absolutely want the penguins to take him.
Yeah, it feels very much a West Clark type pick, in my opinion.
The more that you watch him,
I think the more that you see it,
I think West Clark is going to be all over him.
just when you look at the type of players that the Penguins drafted last year,
you look at the type of players that he helped draft when he was in Toronto.
That's just the way I see it.
Like I think West Clark is probably a big fan on this player.
If there's one nitpick I have, it's that he struggles a bit in front of his own net.
So I feel like if he improves his net front defense there, I think he will be totally fine.
He's also only listed at 170 pounds, but that's going to change as he develops and gets a bit older.
It's a scary thing also, Pat.
he still has one more year in the queue.
He already won the defenseman player of the year as a rookie in the Q 81 points.
Can't wait to see what he does next year before going to Michigan State for the 27-28 season.
I'm, we're really excited for that.
I will say if you want someone that's going to hit the NHL right away,
I don't think Blile is going to be that guy, Pat.
He's probably going to take, you know, two-ish three years before he gets here,
probably around three, just because, again, he is committed to Michigan State for the 27-28 season.
Obviously, things can change.
sign an ELC before then you turn pro but I think at least two but probably around three
ish years is probably when he is going to be here but again really big fan of him he has all the
traits that I look for in a defenseman if he is the pick at 22 I'd be pretty satisfied but
do you have anything else to add I mean the the last thing I wanted to add about his game and
obviously I want to make it clear here we're talking about the QMJHL which as I
have said frequently of all the junior leagues in Canada, that's the one where defense is the most
optional. That is the league that you go to as a top scorer. But the thing that I will say that I really
am impressed by in his game is that he is useful in pretty much all situations. This isn't a pigeonhole
type of player where you go, all right, you can have them at five on five and you can have them
on the power play. But late in the game when you're defending a lead or late in the game when you're
you're killing a penalty, you might not want to put Blyle out there.
This is in all situations, defensemen.
We'll see if that translates over to college when he does eventually get to Michigan
State or if he plays really well in his next year at the queue and he surprises at
training camp with whomever he's with, should it be the penguins.
Maybe we don't find that out.
But at the end of the day, the fact that he is able to be useful in all scenarios at this
age in a league like the queue gives me a lot of hope on what this kid could develop into
as a talent potentially in the NHL. Yeah, I'm with you. It's really him, Ryan Lynn, Xavier,
they're all three of them are so fun in this class. I wouldn't have a problem with the penguins
taking any of those three. I know some people are a bit more down on Xavier because he's all
gas, no breaks, but the offensive upside is ridiculous. But it's also the same with Tommy, his
offensive upside is unreal. He's a bit better in his own zone. And I think he might be just as good
of a skater as Xavier, potentially, if not better. It's really close. I love all three defensemen.
Ryan Lynn, if you want someone more steady, more reliable, that's probably him. But Tommy's right
up there too, man. To me, you can't go wrong with any of those three. That's my opinion. So that's
going to do it for this second segment. Coming up to end the show, Penguins made a roster move on Tuesday
announcing the signing of Taylor Godier to a one-year contract,
and Pat and I are going to discuss what that means coming up right after this.
But before we get to that, we have to tell you all about one more sponsor,
which is Decagon.
As companies grow, customer support gets a lot more complicated.
More customers means more questions, more channels to manage,
and higher expectations for fast personalized service.
That's usually when businesses start looking at AI,
but most solutions either feel too generic or take forever to implement.
And that's where Decagon comes in.
Dectagon helps companies create personalized, concierge-style customer support experiences with AI agents across chat, email voice, and SMS.
Their agents are available 24-7.
They feel natural to talk to and can resolve customer requests on their own, helping businesses scale support without losing that personal touch.
The best customer experiences don't happen by accident, whether it's in business or sports.
People remember organizations that respond quickly, understand context, and make every interaction feel personal.
We've all had situations where something went wrong, but what you remember is how the company handled it, organizations that responded quickly and solved problems efficiently.
Decagon is helping businesses, excuse me, create more of those moments by giving customers fast, personalized support whenever they needed.
Are you ready to transform your customer support?

All right, we're back here on the Wednesday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
I'm one of your host, Hunter Hodes, joined by my co-patrick Tamp.
And Pat the Penguins announced that they had re-signed,
goaltender, Taylor Godiate to a one-year contract on Tuesday.
He was set to be a group six UFA after the season.
For the Penguins, they weren't going to let him go,
especially after how great he was in the ECHL,
another insane year for him.
And I think, Matt, that should probably be the final year for him in the ECHL.
it is time for him to make the jump to the HL,
and I fully expect that for the 26-27 season.
I don't see why it wouldn't.
I mean, you look at how good he was with the Nailers,
especially at that Kelly Cup playoff run,
which speaking of,
nailers end up losing to the team that wins the Kelly Cup.
The Florida Everblades went on to win.
Shocker, the Florida Everblades win another Kelly Cup.
Wow.
And it's looking a lot like the baby pens we're going to have to,
are going to have lost to the team that goes on to win the Calder Cup because Marleys are on the verge of
sweeping in the Calder Cup final.
So at least there's that little cold comfort.
But the point about Gaudier is this.
The offense dried up for the Nailers in the conference final, but the goaltending did not.
There is basically one reason the Nailers struggled in the Kelly Cup Eastern Conference final.
they lost their scoring touch. Taylor Godier did not lose his goaltending touch.
He was really good for them start to finish beginning of the season all the way through to
the conference final. And with the expectation that Sergey Mureshov is going to make the jump
in play in the NHL next year, that leaves Gaudier and Blumquist in the HL.
And the other thing I'll say about this signing, other than the fact that it's cheap, it's a two-way
deal is I will go back to my favorite Jeff Merritt quote.
Goaltending is 70% of the game when you have it.
It's 100% when you don't.
And for the penguins right now,
organizationally,
they've got a lot of really good goaltending depth in the pipeline and on the
roster,
assuming that Sheelov will be back and Murashav is going to make the jump.
But if Sheelov takes a step back,
If Mureshov doesn't pan out the way you hope, you've got Gaudier and Blumquist still waiting.
And also you've got Gabriel Degg, who good chance he's going to end up in Wheeling next year.
So there is a lot of goaltending depth in the organization.
So bringing Gaudier back does feel like a bit of a no-brainer.
100%.
And I will say, Pat, there are still some rumors that Wheeling may not be the affiliate for next season
just because of the new ownership that's going to take over.
They own the Florida Everblades.
I'm kind of curious to see.
Do the Everblades become the new ECHL affiliate of the Penguins?
Time will tell.
Again, there's been rumors about it, but we'll have to see what happens with that.
I think with Godee also, again, you look at his numbers from this year.
Very good, as usual, 21 and 9 and 5 in the regular season with a 2.09 goals against average.
9.29, same percentage, and 3 shutouts in the playoffs, like you said, very good.
96 and 2 record 2.23 GA and a 922 Sabresage.
wasn't close to the problem in that series against the Everblades.
The Everblades were just too good.
And you saw that when they won the Kelly Cup final yet again,
just because they continue to dominate the ECHL overall.
I think with Gaudier, there's just nothing really left for him to learn in the
ECHL, whether it's unwilling next year if they're still the affiliate or if it's
someone like the Everblades, if they become the Penguins affiliate, time will tell.
I just think this is the next natural step in his development is going to the
A HL being that 1A, 1B goalie there, probably with Blumquist.
That's the way it stands right now.
And then having someone else take over the reins in the ECHL, whether it's Gabriel
Degg or someone else.
So that's where I'm at on Godee.
I think he is more than earned his way to Wilkesbury.
There's also the other option as well that I look at with this organization right now overall.
And you look at where they want to go, what they're trying to do.
When you have Ardarsheelov, Sergey Marischoff, Yoel Blumquist, Taylor Gaudier,
Gabriel Degg, you only have two to three spots for goaltenders.
And I just listed off five.
So there's also a chance that Blumquist or Gaudier or even Degg, if you need to get a big trade over the line,
wouldn't be the worst idea to throw one of them in because let's say
Mirosov pans out or let's say Sheelov starts to evolve into a starting goal tender.
You have the ability to use some of these guys as assets to push your plan forward
because they're not all going to be able to play in the NHL.
So the fact that they're keeping these guys in-house as both insurance policies
or potential assets to use in a move.
I like what they're doing with this
because it's the position that everybody needs,
and if you have an abundance of it,
it can help you out if you need to make moves.
I'm with you.
I think of those three,
the most likely that may get traded is potentially Blumquist.
I don't think they're going to move on from Gagg that quickly.
Go to Ye.
I think they have at least plans for the 26, 27 season,
but also at the same time,
you can say that they have plans for Blumquist for next season as well,
because as of right now,
he's going to try to win a spot on the main team alongside Artie Shulves,
who we all know he's going to make the team.
But at least for camp right now,
I think the battle is going to be between Blumquist and Murshov,
and I think both you and I have Maryshov winning that battle.
Probably most of the fan base does as well.
So if there is a goalie to dangle in a trade,
I'd lean towards Blumquist being the more likely one,
but hey, I've been surprised plenty of times throughout the Kyle Dubas tenure.
he does stuff that really not many people see coming just because not a lot leaks out up in Cranberry and then also downtown Pittsburgh.
So there you go.
Taylor Gaudier resigns one-year contract, excited for him for next season.
Hopefully he can get some good games in the HL.
But that's going to do it for the Wednesday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
Pat and I will be back with another episode for you all on Thursday.
And yeah, he hinted at it.
We're looking to have Jesse Marshall come on.
on Friday for a full draft preview episode and probably a whole bunch of other stuff as well.
That's the plan right now.
If anything changes, we'll let you know.
But we're really excited because it's been a while since Jesse has been on.
And we're super excited to have them back in a couple of days.
But again, that'll do it for this one.
Thank you all so much for tuning in.
We appreciate it.
We'll be back on Thursday.
